Bill's back on the trail

Posted: Thursday, April 10, 2008 6:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
BOONVILLE, Ind. -- After a series of brief rallies in Puerto Rico early this week and some down time for fundraisers in recent days, Bill Clinton returned to the campaign trail here today and seemingly had a lot to get off his chest.

During a 45-minute speech in a stuffy high school gym, the former president addressed his wife's case to be the nominee even without a delegate lead, his eye-popping tax figures, and, curiously, the flap over his wife's recollection of her Bosnia trip as first lady, a story that seemed to have faded away. He even tweaked Obama more strongly than usual, as he mocked a new campaign ad.

In chronological order, I bring you Bill in his own words:

ON WIFE'S CASE TO BE NOMINEE: "I am so glad to be here. And I'm glad that Indiana is gonna have a say in who the nominee of the Democratic party is and the next president of the united states. You know the next election is in Pennsylvania. It is a hard-fought race, and as has been the case in Texas and Ohio and Rhode Island, where Hillary won great victories, she is being badly outspent, but she's gonna win again.

"And then we're gonna come to Indiana and ask you to give her a chance to go on. If you do that, she'll win big victories in West Virginia and Kentucky, she will win the popular vote, she will go to the convention with the best claim having won the largest number of electoral votes, having won an enormous percentage – two-thirds at least -- of the electoral votes that I was able to get in 1996. She will have the best claim to be the nominee of the party for president. You can do that. Indiana can do that. ...

"I think it's worth just a moment to take a little walk down memory lane to look at the future. This country was founded by people who were running away from abusive, unaccountable government power that forgot about the needs of the people. Our Constitution was set up to make sure that we all lived under the same set of rules. And one of the things that has always made me proud to be a member of my political party is that we believe that's the way everything should operate. Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules."

ON HIS FINANCES: "Now, because we went back to big deficits, every single day of the year we have to borrow money to cover millionaire's tax cuts. [Pauses] And I love saying this, because my family was the poorest family to move into the White House in 100 years. So I left the White House and made a lot of money. And the other day we released our tax returns. And I got criticized. I think the Wall Street Journal, they said, 'That guy must be hiding something. He paid 50 percent more taxes than most people with that kind of money do.'

"So they asked me, I said, I told the accountant, ‘Resolve that in favor of the government. I don't think the millionaires should get tax cuts when we had soldiers in the field and middle-class people needed help, and we had education and health needs.’ "

ON BOSNIA FLAP: "And, you know. I got tickled the other day. A lot of the way this whole campaign has been covered has amused me. But there was a lot of fulminating because Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995. Did y'all see all that? Oh, they blew it up.

"Let me just tell you. The president of Bosnia and General Wesley Clark -- who was there making peace where we'd lost three peacekeepers who had to ride on a dangerous mountain road because it was too dangerous to go the regular, safe way -- both defended her because they pointed out that when her plane landed in Bosnia, she had to go up to the bulletproof part of the plane, in the front. Everybody else had to put their flak jackets underneath the seat in case they got shot at. And everywhere they went they were covered by Apache helicopters. So they just abbreviated the arrival ceremony.

"Now I say that because, what really has mattered is that even then she was interested in our troops. And I think she was the first first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt to go into a combat zone. And you woulda thought, you know, that she'd robbed a bank the way they carried on about this. And some of them when they're 60 they'll forget something when they're tired at 11 at night, too.

"But I say this because you need to know this. Hillary is not only on the armed Services Committee, but when she was in the White House, she asked to be our point person to make sure that Vietnam veterans exposed to the hazards of Agent Orange were taken care of…."

ON OBAMA AD: "And you just can't be carried away by some of these things. I saw -- y'all seen this television ad on, where Hillary's opponent says I don't take money from oil companies? You seen that? Well, that's a good thing, but guess what? No living person who's ever run for office has done that. It's been illegal to take political contributions from oil companies for 100 years. It's almost like saying, you know, 'Vote for me, I brush my teeth every morning.' Or, 'Vote for me, I never robbed a bank.' Or, you know. I say that, because this is not about advertisements. This is about real life. This is a great country with limitless possibilities and profound challenges. And the young people of this country deserve the best president. That's the issue. The best president."

my gawd.  electoral votes??  he's so slimy.  i feel like i need a shower after reading this post...
HATE TO SAY IT, BUT HILLARY IS THE BETTER BETWEEN THEM  SO I WILL GO GOP, BEST OF THE THREE.
GO HILLARY !!!!
Help Her to Win!  Bill - you forgot to count in FL & MI - she will win the popular vote!
Bill, I use to have respect for you.  Too bad your antics, and the truth has shown you for who you really are.
Seriously?

After Bill goes on and on about how Hillary has the 'best claim' at being the nominee...He says:

" And one of the things that has always made me proud to be a member of my political party is that we believe that's the way everything should operate. Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules."

--------------------------------------------------

Wow, paid lobbyists (Bill) are sure good at doubletalk!

---------------------------------------------------
Not to bring up the Rev. Wright issue again, but is this a double standard? How can they hold Obama accountable for something his EX-Pastor said, which he disagreed with, but not hold Hillary Clinton accountable for something her HUSBAND (a real family member) is doing, although she disagree with it. What Rev. Wright said, although it was wrong, only affects a select few. Bill Clinton agreeing to diminish jobs that we so desperately need, affects the majority of us, directly for people without jobs, or indirectly through the economy. They should cover this issue with the same publicity as they did with Rev. Wright.
blah blah blah....give me money and I will tell you more stories!!

"Vote for me because i have not robbed a bank"....what is he implying there. Obama has robbed a bank.

Bill need to go chill out with Monica Lewinsky. Here is the fact; Hillary Clinton cannot be the nominee. There is no way popular vote will count in the convention. Pledge delegate is the barometer for nomination.

As far as i am concern the Clintons doesn't have any credibility left.
"If you do that, she'll win big victories in West Virginia and Kentucky, she will win the popular vote, she will go to the convention with the best claim having won the largest number of electoral votes, having won an enormous percentage – two-thirds at least -- of the electoral votes that I was able to get in 1996. She will have the best claim to be the nominee of the party for president."

...but it's not about "electoral vote"...it's about delegates.

"Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules."

...and those rules can not and should not be rewritten.

"It is a hard-fought race, and as has been the case in Texas and Ohio and Rhode Island, where Hillary won great victories, she is being badly outspent, but she's gonna win again."

...but Senator Clinton didn't win Texas...Senator Obama got more delegates in Texas.

"I got tickled the other day."

...I'm just going to leave that one alone!
President Clinton is right! We do need the best President.

Senator Obama is that candidate.
More Billsh*t:

" Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995. Did y'all see all that?"

One time????

It was at least four or five times (on film) over several months!

And now both he and Hillary want to make light, when they've actually deeply insulted those that did live under sniper fire and constant fear for their lives.

I'd be happy to never talk about Bosnia again...but Bill and Hill won't shut up about it!
Did Bill actually say that Hillary is so old that when she gets tired she forgets things? Yeah, that's what I want in my president.  I'm almost that age and I've been exhausted, never once did I imagine snipers firing at me.  And, Bill, it wasn't once--it was three or four times.  The Clintons still don't get it---telling the truth matters!!!!!!!!!
great response, president!!!
Helluva job, Bubba!

Like Ali, you are still the Greatest.
Tell it like it is, Bill.
Bill was the best president.... I want to see him work his magic again
I have to say that if I was listening to Bill and his familiar voice that I may take him at his word and be nodding along as he talks.  I used to love this guy.

But when you really read what he is saying in a transcript like this you realize he is trying to play us all like fiddles, just like he has been doing all along.  And all this campaigning is really un-statesman like.  I know it's his wife, but geeze, do you think John Adams or George Bush (1) would act like this when their sons were running?  He knows he will be co-president and can't wait to get back in the game....a little too eager if you ask me considering his recent relationships with hedge funds and soveriegn wealth funds.

I am truly done with this guy.  I wish him well, thanks for all the hard work, see ya.

Obama is our man.
hey  bill....let it go bro!!! you had ur turn! made a ton of money and not to mention the"perks" in the oval office(wink, wink) so why dont you be a man for once and do the right thing by your wife, gracefully pull out and get behind the obama, strengthening our party and working with the cabinet to get some of her good ideas that the people like on the ball....we will respect you more......btw would obama be a black man if his father were white and his mother black??????
This is the third time, on three separate accusations, that I've heard the Clintons using 'tiredness' and 'sleepless' as an excuse form something said.

She CANNOT take a 3:00 AM call. That’s when she’ll misspeak and misjudge!
Of course she is being badly outspent.  She is incapable of managing her campaign finances.  Still, we are expected to believe that she will do a fine job of managing the American economy.  Right.

Hang in there, Bubba!  Maybe Hillary will win!  Mmmmmm!!  Fresh new interns!  Beautiful White House furniture that will look lovely in your New York home!  Plenty of convicted criminals who will be glad to buy presidential pardons in exchange for campaign donations.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
I was debating with a friend of mine about the choices we have in this coming election which by the way includes some senate and house seats. He conceived that politicians are all the same, therefore you go with the lesser of the evil. Great, that is profoundly the truth. I’m sure most of you would agree. Politicians lies goes all the way back to the Greek empire, you know during the B.C period. So the news flash for all of you adamantly defending your candidate is that you are actually defending the institution of politics and lies. Obama says he wants to change it and I believe he does, however I doubt he will made as much dent as we’d hope for. Clinton remains mum on declaring she wants to change things which really means that she want it to go ahead as usual. I read a very concise post from a Clinton supporter here and she was so clear that she trust Clinton because to her, Clinton has been a fighter for women’s right. Obama supporters point to his community organizer period as evidence of his past work, but the matter of the fact is that this could all be an illusion and we buy it. McCain lets us think he is an American hero and we reward him to senate, but then again, I ask myself, what if it is all about power. Our welfare is probably the last thing in the politician’s mind when seeking office but here we are defending them as if we have lunch everyday with them. I read posts here that I would have sworn these people hang out with Hillary every single day. The good thing about this is that we, the people are supposed to be part of it, so I propose we step back and take a deep breath and carefully weigh each candidate. Not with a scale fool! Who knows we may be able to get it right this time. I know my approach is tilting toward Obama, but remember the lesser of the evil. It would have been an oxymoron to say politics is selfish but I guess it would be the other way around. These people make decisions that affect our lives directly and yet we refuse to hold them accountable for their selfishness. If this is where we are as a nation – unable to see clearly, then we deserve to fail at everything.
I do not understand why the Clinton's are pushing Puerto Rico so strongly.  Does Clinton have any chance of winning it, because Obama has won the territories so far ...?  I honestly just don't know.  How about some numbers on that Chuck Todd!
I think these people (the Clintons) are heading for a meltdown.  They are so up to their eyeballs in favors owed that if she doesn't get this nomination they'll owe their debtors big time.

Watch out Obama.  The Clintons are BANKING on getting this nomination to pay back the favors to foreign governments!
No wonder the billionaire criminals of the world, have hired this salesman to lobby for them, and pay him millions of dollars for every speech. He could sell the dead, life insurance.

Thank The Good Lord, we who support Senator Obama, have insured our futures with the best policy underwritten by Barack Liberty of Mutual Obama!

Pulling for Obama '08
Bill must be nuts who does he think is kidding. More lies on top of lies. I am so disappointed that I actually voted twice for this liar. Why can't he just give it a rest? Serial liars will always lie to cover up a lie. One time Hilary misspoke, he says! She lied about Bosnia and sniper fire on more than three occasions. Whew! Mr. President you are a serial liar.
Glad to hear it---I hope the united states does as well in the future as it did when Bill was in office. Was he accused of race baiting today? He usually is by the obamanoids.
Wow, where to start?

ON WIFE'S CASE TO BE NOMINEE: I see Bill resurrecting the "most electoral votes" metric to show she's "winning". I think Chuck Todd described that by saying "they had to find some metric that showed them in the lead". I love the presumption that a state narrowly carried by Hillary in the primary now "belongs" to her and can't possibly be won by anyone else in November.

"And one of the things that has always made me proud to be a member of my political party is that we believe that's the way everything should operate. Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules." WHAT? Does that mean they are going to stop trying to include Michigan and Florida since they weren't going to be included according to the rules negotiated and agreed to last fall?

ON HIS FINANCES: I applaud the Clinton's for not trying to evade or limit their taxes. Oh by the way where is Yucaipa based again? Oh yeah, the Cayman islands. I think the issue here is who paid Bill and what they might be expecting in return. The Columbian trade org. is probably just the tip of the iceberg. Ditto for the Library donations.

ON BOSNIA FLAP: It wasn't once Bill - I've seen footage of her telling it on at least three occasions. She wasn't exhausted - she was chortling happily as she recounted it on St. Patty's day (yes day not at night - as an Irishman I still wince at the memory of that scarf). She didn't "correct it" immediately - first her campaign trounced Sinbad as a mere "comedian" when he challenged her account and there wasn't a whit of an apology about her falsely claiming an experience real American soldiers are facing every day now. If anything she seemed truculent that people were bringing it up.

ON OBAMA AD: I would concede that the Obama ad is too pat but as the Clinton's are taking more of this money than either McCain or Obama I think it takes quite a bit of chutzpah for them to be harping on this. Are they saying: "No one takes Oil company money directly and we're way better than him at raising money from oil company lobbyists and PACS"
Barack's biggest asset is Bill.
Gee Whiz--the way Bill Clinton spins you would think he was the one running for president.

Very gallant, but too late, Bill, the party's over.

Should have got here sooner!
My, did he not read how many times she tole that story or does he just think the American people are that braindead. They both have the ability to remember things the way they want to.
"one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it"

Uh, Bill you are either lied or are confused about the facts.  Sen. Clinton told the sniper fire story 3 times (not once):  Once in Tx in Feb., once again in Pa, and then again in Pa during a news conference.  And no she did not immediately apologize about it.  When Sinbad the comedian came out to challenge her story about sniper fire (he went with her to Bosnia), Sen. Clinton campaign produced three or four witnesses to rebut Sinbad's version of events.  She did not "apologize" about it until nearly three days AFTER video came out showing that her story was a big old fib.
Why is it so hard for someone name Clinton to tell the truth.  Sen. Obama won Texas as he picked up more deligates then Hillary did.  Bill Clinton has become a total political hack.
Where to start.....
1)  Hillary always follows the rules (unless it suits her to change them like with the MI & FL when she discovered she was earning less delegates than Obama.
2) Electoral Votes?  That's not how we choose a candidate!
3)She was tired one night and made a mistake about Bosnia and immediately corrected it?  Come on Bill!  She made the same statement at least 3 times that I know of so a mistatement it is not.
4) Bill's finances, you have to wonder what kind of speach he would give that would be worth $200,000 and not be expected to do something else for that $200,000 (Columbia)
Let me be one among many who say:

She only said it once, Bill?  Are you sure?
Sounds like their pushing Bill a little too hard.  He's not making much sense anymore.  Give him a rest.
Too bad Hillary's "great victory" in Texas was actually a loss, delegate wise.

Oh well.  Depends on what the definition of "victory" is, right Bill?

These Clinton schmucks can't leave the scene fast enough.  Selfish and classless.
And here I was hoping he would stay in Puerto Rico.
Poor Bill Clinton. He's almost as pathetic and dishonest as Hillary ... what happened to him?

This whole victim act of Hillary's is just ridiculous. Hillary lies and actually gets called out on it! What misogyny!
Give me a break Bill you can make up all kind of stories about how and why Hillary does whatever she does. The truth is there is no way she is going to win on all the lies that have been told. Give us all a break. Obama 08
OHHHH ROBBBB....  Sorry, Bill

She 'misstated once?, when she was tired?  She told that tale at least three times that have been recorded for the public to watch...  And, what kind of President were you, to send your wife and only child into a war zone?  PLEASSSEEE....

I respected you so much when you were in office - I defended you to my peers, and constantly reinforced your policies and felt you were a victim of the 'far right', as you wanted us to believe...

But, you and Hillary have totally lost my respect.

I originally signed up as one of your volunteers, but then I started receiving emails with 'talking points' for me to use when I was promoting Hillary.  The problem was, it didn't say a word about what Hillary would do - it was filled with hateful insinuations about her opponents...

I had 'buyers remorse', opened my eyes, and read Barack's book...  Everyone should...
Doesn't it seem like he has an excuse for everything!! Thats why he's called Slick Willie.
"...Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995."

One time hun? Wow, Bill needs a fact check.
He's great I wish he would attack the press and its one-sided coverage especially MSNBC. It's kind of fun now to watch Chris M.and Tim R. fight over who is going to get the chance to make his bed every morning. I hope they at least change the sheets everyday, could get a little messy.
FIRST READ--

why do you have the comments section 'open' for these evening articles?  ...you certainly don't post them.
I believe it was proven that Hillary has taken more money from pacs and lobbyists than any other candidate Democrat or Republican. How can you be so against something but allow yourself to benefit (as much) as she has? It seems  so two-faced of her to do. That makes me worry about what will happen if she gets in the W.H.
Doesn't it seem like he has an excuse for everything!! Thats why he's called Slick Willie.
Is this the same person speaking who  was once a president?
What a load of crap!!!!! piled high and DEEP!!!
The pure guile of these Clintons. Misspoke late at night? She told that same lie on ST. Patricks day in the middle of the day!!!!  DAMN
Put a fork in him and Hillary. They are done!
So now the excuse about the Bosnia "misspeaking" is that Hillary "mistated: because she is "60" and "tired at 11 at night."

What I want to know is...

Won't she be worse at 3 A.M.?????
