Bill's back on the trail

Posted: Thursday, April 10, 2008 6:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
BOONVILLE, Ind. -- After a series of brief rallies in Puerto Rico early this week and some down time for fundraisers in recent days, Bill Clinton returned to the campaign trail here today and seemingly had a lot to get off his chest.

During a 45-minute speech in a stuffy high school gym, the former president addressed his wife's case to be the nominee even without a delegate lead, his eye-popping tax figures, and, curiously, the flap over his wife's recollection of her Bosnia trip as first lady, a story that seemed to have faded away. He even tweaked Obama more strongly than usual, as he mocked a new campaign ad.

In chronological order, I bring you Bill in his own words:

ON WIFE'S CASE TO BE NOMINEE: "I am so glad to be here. And I'm glad that Indiana is gonna have a say in who the nominee of the Democratic party is and the next president of the united states. You know the next election is in Pennsylvania. It is a hard-fought race, and as has been the case in Texas and Ohio and Rhode Island, where Hillary won great victories, she is being badly outspent, but she's gonna win again.

"And then we're gonna come to Indiana and ask you to give her a chance to go on. If you do that, she'll win big victories in West Virginia and Kentucky, she will win the popular vote, she will go to the convention with the best claim having won the largest number of electoral votes, having won an enormous percentage – two-thirds at least -- of the electoral votes that I was able to get in 1996. She will have the best claim to be the nominee of the party for president. You can do that. Indiana can do that. ...

"I think it's worth just a moment to take a little walk down memory lane to look at the future. This country was founded by people who were running away from abusive, unaccountable government power that forgot about the needs of the people. Our Constitution was set up to make sure that we all lived under the same set of rules. And one of the things that has always made me proud to be a member of my political party is that we believe that's the way everything should operate. Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules."

ON HIS FINANCES: "Now, because we went back to big deficits, every single day of the year we have to borrow money to cover millionaire's tax cuts. [Pauses] And I love saying this, because my family was the poorest family to move into the White House in 100 years. So I left the White House and made a lot of money. And the other day we released our tax returns. And I got criticized. I think the Wall Street Journal, they said, 'That guy must be hiding something. He paid 50 percent more taxes than most people with that kind of money do.'

"So they asked me, I said, I told the accountant, ‘Resolve that in favor of the government. I don't think the millionaires should get tax cuts when we had soldiers in the field and middle-class people needed help, and we had education and health needs.’ "

ON BOSNIA FLAP: "And, you know. I got tickled the other day. A lot of the way this whole campaign has been covered has amused me. But there was a lot of fulminating because Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995. Did y'all see all that? Oh, they blew it up.

"Let me just tell you. The president of Bosnia and General Wesley Clark -- who was there making peace where we'd lost three peacekeepers who had to ride on a dangerous mountain road because it was too dangerous to go the regular, safe way -- both defended her because they pointed out that when her plane landed in Bosnia, she had to go up to the bulletproof part of the plane, in the front. Everybody else had to put their flak jackets underneath the seat in case they got shot at. And everywhere they went they were covered by Apache helicopters. So they just abbreviated the arrival ceremony.

"Now I say that because, what really has mattered is that even then she was interested in our troops. And I think she was the first first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt to go into a combat zone. And you woulda thought, you know, that she'd robbed a bank the way they carried on about this. And some of them when they're 60 they'll forget something when they're tired at 11 at night, too.

"But I say this because you need to know this. Hillary is not only on the armed Services Committee, but when she was in the White House, she asked to be our point person to make sure that Vietnam veterans exposed to the hazards of Agent Orange were taken care of…."

ON OBAMA AD: "And you just can't be carried away by some of these things. I saw -- y'all seen this television ad on, where Hillary's opponent says I don't take money from oil companies? You seen that? Well, that's a good thing, but guess what? No living person who's ever run for office has done that. It's been illegal to take political contributions from oil companies for 100 years. It's almost like saying, you know, 'Vote for me, I brush my teeth every morning.' Or, 'Vote for me, I never robbed a bank.' Or, you know. I say that, because this is not about advertisements. This is about real life. This is a great country with limitless possibilities and profound challenges. And the young people of this country deserve the best president. That's the issue. The best president."

So now Mr Clinton is CONTINUING the Bosnis lie?
"because they pointed out that when her plane landed in Bosnia, she had to go up to the bulletproof part of the plane, in the front. Am I not to believe my "lying" eyes? A little girl with flowers AND a poem? The Leaders of that country? THE POTUS's daughter? The US press WITH cameras?DUhhh????
This "mis-speak" was REPEATED at least 3 times PUBLICLY over a 1 week period!!!!
AND when asked for "clarification" stated "That's the way it happened! We even had to RUN with our heads down to the cars!!!Oh and that GUY (Sinbad, who was there also)... He's lying about what happened ... after all He's JUST a comedian!
Mr. Clinton ... with all due respect ... you ARE lying! Again ...apparenty! I have only one question ... WHY? You CAN tell the truth ... we promise not to impeach you ... again!
Senator Clinton told that inaccurate under-fire Bosnia story on three separate occasions, not just once.  I first heard it in December and thought "Wow!  How did I miss the fact that the First Lady was under fire in Bosnia?"  Well, I didn't miss the coverage, because it never happened.  How can you repeat the same falsehood three times and call it a misstatement?  This is nonsense.

Also, hasn't someone told former President Bill Clinton yet that Eleanor Roosevelt is not the last First Lady to be in a war zone?  The last First Lady to be in a serious war zone (Korea) was Mamie Eisenhower.  Also, the war in Bosnia had been over for TWO months before Senator Clinton arrived.  The Korean war was still raging when Mrs. Eisenhower visited.  Shouldn't we give her credit for actually putting herself into harms way?

Finally, Senator Obama's advertisement should have  said more than he doesn't take money from oil companies; it should have explained that this means  he does not take money from PACS related to the energy industry.  Senator Obama does not take this money.

Senator Obama has taken no campaign contributions from any PAC (except a $25 contribution).  He also takes no money from federally registered lobbyists.

Conversely, at the end of February 2008, Senator Clinton has taken $435,158 from business related PACS, $88,538 from labor related PACS and $250,284 from ideological/single issue PACS for a total of $1,157,939 in PAC contributions.  An additional large amount of these contributions come from federally registered lobbyists.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/summary.asp?id=N00000019&cycle=2008

One can assume these numbers have grown through March and April.

Sometimes you do get what you pay for.  Senator Obama has asked to fund his campaign so that he can be independent from special interests as President.  Senator Clinton believes "lobbyists are people too," which they are, but how is this relevant?  Which do you prefer?  I prefer Senator Obama.
The depths of this man's deceit is getting to the point of no return.  Would he even recognize the truth anymore?
This is what the 1990's were all about.  There was the truth and the "Clinton-truth".
He keeps saying patently false statements, and they are published unchallenged by journalists.
It is how he was able to look America in the eye and state "he didn't have sex with that woman - Miss Lewinsky"  Even after confronted with the physical evidence, he kept on denying the truth until normal Americans were wondering about their own sanity.

If Hillary is the nominee, we will have 7 more months of this disgraced clown saying what ever he wants, no matter if it is true or not.  As long as he thinks it will benefit his wife, he will say anything.  He has no concerns about the viability of any other candidate in the Democratic Party, or even whether the Party will remain intact after his non-sensical speeches.  It is truly scorched-earth at its worst.  I hope the super-delegates are watching this as they see their down-ticket races evaporating away if Clinton is on the top.

It is really sad.  Do the blue-collar, Reagan-Democrats really believe this man?  If so, why?
That’s why I’m hoping to vote for Obama.  Because I deserve the “best president.”  Although I once was, I’m not a real fan of Bill Clinton’s, and don’t like particularly like the way his wife has “moved the goal post” to suit her campaign.  Personally, I don’t really care about the Bosnia misstep, nor the more recent hospital flap.  I care about the fact that millions of Americans don’t have healthcare, and that this country entered into a war—in my opinion—for all the wrong reasons.  So if Clinton does win the nomination, then I—a long-time Republican who is now registered Independent—will vote for her.  Bill’s little “speech” shouldn’t fall on deaf ears and it doesn’t, but I’ve grown tired of hearing his well-worn tune.
Bill Clinton

I cannot believe that you will not leave the Bosnia fabrication alone.
Hillary, not once, but many times, told this obvious lie. And to credit Wesley Clark with making your wife's claim is an apt comparsion to what the meaning of "it" is.
I voted for you twice and never regretted it but the outright lies and stories are really piling up.
If Hillary cannot win on the up and up, then it is time to quit.
Please Bill, for millions of us who vote and donate to the democratic party recognize the country has changed so much and you and your wife are so 1990's.
And, if I were you, I would not crow so much about why you made so much money after the white house, it is how you make your money that is important to the American people, and it does appear most of your money did not come from hard work, but by influence brokering
Wow, this READ has been out for almost an hour and no Clinton bashing yet - MSNBC bloggers must have knocked themselves out flapping gums against the Clintons heh, heh.

But I am glad that Memoli & Domenico mentioned Bill's quote about Elizabeth Roosevelt's  unofficial ambassador status in the 1940s....

As far as husband & wife teams went; Eleanor Roosevelt had tremendous influence over her husband's policies. It has been said that she was behind MANY of FDRs social programs in the New Deal plan. She was also a major and independent ambassador here & abroad during very complicated and dangerous times! She would have made an excellent President and yet nearly 70 years later we still cannot accept the idea of women in power, (Just read the constant vitriol on this site).

Isn't it about time we give up our misogynistic, condescending disdain for women and join the rest of the world - (as Elton John implied).
wait wait wait...Hillary told that Bosnia LIE at least 5 times...and if she was so tired from a speech at 10:30 at night, how in the world can she answer the 3 AM call???
I am just amazed at how my opinion of Bill and Hillary has changed over this campaign.  It is because of their unscrupulous efforts (both he and Hillary) that I have come to really dislike the two of them.  Sure, I have always preferred Barack to all of the other Democrats but I never found that any of the other candidates (or their spouses) engendered the negative response, I have derived from listening to either of the Clintons (and I voted for Bill twice and Hillary in 2000 - I would have voted for Hillary in 2006 [albeit, half-heartedly] but I was in the hospital).

It irritates me when Republicans friends give me the 'I told you so' routine.  Yet, I have to admit that they are correct.  There is just something about those two Clintons, that as David Geffin has said (to paraphrase), makes them lie with tremendous ease.

This whole electoral college argument is just so ludicrous.  If Bill thinks that he can turn the entire convention on its ear with some sophistry, he is still smoking and IS inhaling.  I find it insulting that Bill thinks that he can argue his way into Hillary winning the convention (it reminds me of the movie 'Clueless').

This is nomination is over and unobtainable as far as Hillary is concerned and although the Clintons know they can stay in this as long as their money holds out, I resent the implications that she can win this in any other way other then the total number of delegates (as allocated by convention rules).

If the Clintons are trying to destroy Obama and position themselves for 2012, all I can say is that it will not work (for numerous reasons).  My only advise for them is to run the most positive campaign of which they are capable, so that they do little damage to Barack and leave this campaign with as much dignity as possible.  This unselfish move would reward them with more regard than if they were to manipulate the process in the manner in which they are obviously making an attempt.
Obama '08
Bill is a fraud, Bill takes money from Oil Company Lobbyists, PACs and $800,000.00 from the Columbians to he can add CAFTA to NAFTA.

How can anyone let a guy who will con labour into voting for him, while taking money to screw labour with CAFTA.
Are you as tired of writing about BC as we are all tired of reading his BS?
Keep talking Bill, and grab a shovel while you're at it.  You'll  need it to dig your way out of all the B.S. coming out of your mouth.

ps-how did you convince Hillary to let you loose upon PR by yourself for a few days?
AND....one hasn't run yet.
I'm from Indiana and I'm voting OBAMA!!!

Sorry Bill, but most people in my neck of the woods would vote for anyone over another Clinton.

"Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules."

So, in other words, when the DNC punishes FL and MI by stripping them of their delegates, we should abide by THOSE "rules" too... right? Oh, I forgot... those have been cherry-picked as the "exception."

My bad.
I was a Bill Clinton supporter while he was President and I didn't understand the hatred Republicans had for him. Now I do. Making statements like whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play but we should all be under the same set of rules while they try and change the rules Harold Ickes voted for regarding Florida and Michigan is repulsive. And then to try and blame Obama for it while trying to seem like they (the Clintons) are just fighting for ordinary voters is even more repulsive. This is the race they know how to run- play the victim and smear the opponent with half-truths and manipulations. It's time for the rest of us tired of this to come together.

No more Clinton spin. She is not an underdog fighting for you. She is the establishment candidate backed by Washington lobbyists who have paid hunderdes of millions of dollars to Bill Clinton and will be looking for their payback if we are stupid enough to let them back in the White House. Dont be bamboozled in '08. Vote Obama.

Bill Clinton sort of reminds you of your first bad boyfriend who lied to you consistently but you kept listening because you were in love and wanted to believe him.  Unfortunately, I am no longer in love with Bill.  I don't believe a word that comes out of his mouth!!!
Ah...nevermind
Okay, Bill!  Electoral Votes?  What are you smoking?!?

Obama 2008 -- Yes, WE CAN!!!
Former Presient Clinton is a joke. No, seriously....he's a idiot. Go back to the trailer park.
Bill Clinton:  "And one of the things that has always made me proud to be a member of my political party is that we believe that's the way everything should operate. Whatever the rules are, we'll suit up and play, but we should all be under the same set of rules."
---------------------
Then why does your wife keep changing the rules as she goes along?  She agreed to the "rules" set forth by the DNC for Michigan and Florida, now she wants to back away from those rules.  She stated after she won New Hampshire that "It's all about the delegates," until she fell further behind in delegates, at which point it became about the popular vote and the "big states."  She had no problem with caucuses until Obama started winning all of them, at which point she called them "unfair."  The list goes on and on!

As far as your spin on the Bosnia issue - what a "hoot"!  She did not misspeak - she lied - in long, vivid detail, repeatedly.

Also, just an FYI, Pat Nixon was first lady when she went into a war zone (Vietnam) in 1969.  But I guess you just "misspoke."

NOW BILL IS TELLING TALE TALES ABOUT HILLARY'S BOSNIA TRIP

MSNBC needs to report on this, why are they allowed to LIE to the American Public and get away with it??
Thank u Bill for bringing your finances and the Bosnia flap back into the spotlight...i greatly appreciate your indirect support to my candidate Obama. To continue saying that Hillary mis-spoke or had a memory lapse when she repeated the same story with the same detail and the same conviction again, and again, and again. Hillary did not forget-SHE LIED...Bill has a history of lying (Monica) so i understand why he would support his wife's lies. perhaps they r both suffering from flashbacks of the 60's? Keep up the good work kids...
Based on the ramblings quoted here, McCain should pick Bill to be his VP.

At 3:00 am, they's be trying to figure out what that ringing noise in ther ears is.

Give me a break, how in the world could anyone in ther right mind believe Bill Clinton?

Lets move forward.  Lets finally get into a new kind of politics.  Lets become united again on what really is important to humanity.

Honesty is an must.

Think about it people, listen to the candidates, who stays consitant and on message regardless of what appears to be popular at the moment?

I was really hoping to end this primary season with something better than complete disdain for Bill and your wife.  Unfortunately, they keep piling it on.

Hillary said not once, but five times in separate speeches that she was dodging sniper fire in Bosnia.  Are they trying to spin the lies instead of owning up to them?  Nobody would be carrying on if the lies weren't flowing like the White River in Arkansas.

Also, our constitution was not set up so that we were all living under the same set of rules.  Anyone who has taken a Constitution test can tell you that it was set up to allow the states a certain autonomy thereby allowing for different rules in different places.  It also started out supporting slavery and did not allow women to vote.  Sorry, different rules for different people.  The great thing about our Constitution is not that the rules contained are static, but that they can be changed by ammendment with the changing of political attitudes (not always for the better if you think about prohibition).  What Bill said doesn't make sense.

Finally, Bill's wife's, opponent meant he did not and will not take PAC and lobbying money from Big Oil.  While the American public may not readily know that a politician cannot take money directly from an oil corporation, it is an easy mistake by someone in politics to assume that the people do know and will assume correctly.  True, Obama made a mistake but it was the mistake of a politician, not an outright lie.

On the other hand, telling the public that he does not take money from oil company lobbyists and PACs might confuse unknowing people into thinking that he could be taking the money directly from the companies themselves because they do not know that it is illegal to do so.  After all, certain aspects of our government have long been thought of skirting law to their own ends (bribes have brought down many elected and appointed officials in our history hence the laws against taking the money directly).

Let Hillary have her day in the sun and let her run as long as she wants.  Just keep the garbage out of it, ok?

How could anyone want 4 more years of Bill Clinton's spin? We got used to Bill and we voted in Bush...and we consider 4 more of this circus?
Bill Clinton is a great president. we all know that Hillary is treated by media unfairly. as Bill said Bosnia was exagerated by media and Hillary admitted that she did a mistake.
Jermiah Wright;s comment and Obama's relationship with him 20 years are less imoportant to media.
I wish some one will ask one day Chris Mathews is sexist person of the world. why he hates women ? hwe has wife
Yikes!  Bill is full of it.  I hope people don't believe what he is saying.  For example, Hillary was caught exaggerating re Tuzla not once but three or four times.  The other remarks are similarly false or exaggerated.  I used to like Bill Clinton but now I dislike him almost as much as Hillary.  And then there is his $800,000 from Columbia directly or indirectly.
Bill's respeak is:"I saw -- y'all seen this television ad on,where Hillary's opponent says I don't take money from oil companies? You seen that? Well, that's a good thing, but guess what? No living person who's ever run for office has done that. It's been illegal to take political contributions from oil companies for 100 years."

Ah, but what the radio ad actually says is:

And he's the only candidate who doesn't take a dime from oil company PACs or lobbyists. The only one.

Which is, in fact, entirely correct.

Bill returning from Puerto Rico -- had lots of women stroking him while he was there!  So he's back in the States and feels he can point that crooked finger at the voters -- I don't think so!

Both Bill and Hillary are liars, thieves, and cannot be trusted!  Yes, there were illegal payments made to them and he knows it -- he is just daring us to prove it!!!!
what electoral votes are assigned in primaries again?

and a tired hillary answering the phone at 3AM

this reminds me of "every which way you can"
