HRC: Obama says Pennsylvanians 'bitter'

Posted: Friday, April 11, 2008 6:49 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Mark Murray
PHILADELPHIA -- Hillary Clinton wanted Keystone State voters to know she doesn't look down on them, suggesting rival Barack Obama did.

"I've spent a lot of time traveling around this beautiful, historic state... I have a great deal of affection for the state and for the people and this campaign has been a privilege and a joy," Clinton told an enthusiastic crowd packing the same hall at Drexel University, where she took part in a fateful debate last fall. "It's being reported that my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who've faced hard times are bitter. Well, that's not my experience. As I travel around Pennsylvania, I meet people who are resilient, who are optimistic, who are positive who are rolling up their sleeves. They're working hard every day for a better future for themselves and their children. Pennsylvanians don't need a president who looks down on them. They need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them."

She was responding to remarks Obama made at a recent, closed-press San Francisco fundraiser about small-town Pennsylvanians. Her campaign sent emails to reporters earlier Friday afternoon pushing the story line.

The emails cited this Huffington Post article, which quotes Obama telling backers: "You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said. "And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

The McCain campaign also (ironically) pounced on the report from the Huffington Post, a liberal blog. "It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking," McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told Politico. "It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans."

Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor responded with this statement: "Senator Obama has said many times in this campaign that Americans are understandably upset with their leaders in Washington for saying anything to win elections while failing to stand up to the special interests and fight for an economic agenda that will bring jobs and opportunity back to struggling communities.  And if John McCain wants a debate about who's out of touch with the American people, we can start by talking about the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans that he once said offended his conscience but now wants to make permanent."

*** UPDATE *** The transcript (via Huffington Post) of Obama's remarks is below....

OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people are most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long. They feel so betrayed by government that when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism.

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What is the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is -- so, we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- to close tax loopholes, you know, roll back the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama's gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we're gonna provide health care for every American.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing.

This is a total nonstory. And Obama is right.. many people are bitter about the economy. Watch Obama use this nonstory to make a magnificent speech about the economy. He has a knack for turning adversity into greatness.
Nice to see that McCain and Clinton do not believe people should be skeptical about politicans promising things for them when nothing has happended.  I'd be bitter too in bad times.  Perhaps Clinton does not understand that given that she has made over $109 million in the past 7 years.  This is NOT talking down to anyone, it is acknowledging the reality that faces people.  Get a grip McCain and Clinton and start listening to the people.

What Obama really said is now taken out of context by Camp clinton who are so desperate….

By the way First Read you should probably provide the context for the statement by quoting the paragraph before and the one after the one you in your piece.
Has America suffered enough from a void of leadership?

Is it time for leadership instead of secretive and cynical directorship and dictatorship?

Looking backward or looking forward, Barack Obama exhibits more leadership than anyone on the horizon.

Could this be the year that the high road becomes the choice of preference in American politics?
Oh, Hillary, you still don't get the hang of straight talk.  Obama didn't say the people of Pennsylvania are bitter people.  He said they're bitter about the economy and the loss of their jobs.  The people of Pennsylvania are too smart to fall for your double talk.
Heed your husband's advice in the next article -- don't focus on distractions, Hillary!
[The McCain campaign also (ironically) pounced on the report from the Huffington Post, a liberal blog.]
--It is really quite impressive how Sen. Obama is essentially fighting a two-front war, with Sen. Clinton equating herself to Sen. McCain of course and visa versa.
The entire quote from Obama is a very powerful (and empathetic) statement.  Snippets don't do it justice.
Go to the Huffington Post and listen to the Audio Version....NON Story....The Clintons and McCain should have waited until they got all the fact....

Stupid Stupid Stupid
How is what Obama said, Condescending? I don't understand. If anything, it's very sympathetic. Do Senators Clinton and Mcain really want to bring this to light? I don't see anything negative in what he said. O wait, if you point out the truth in "politiks" then you are unpatriotic and "out of touch?" Ahhhhh.... It all makes sense!

Update: Audio of Barack Obama's statements in this story is now posted below, along with the full transcript. See responses from Hillary Clinton and John McCain here.

What is ironic is that clinton pounced given her husbands stance on not focusing on distractions.... oh wait!!  she does not agree with her husband on many things. *rolls eyes*

OBAMA '08 - Yes WE Can!!
I am sitting here in Indaina working for an auto company that doesn't honor my loyalty and workmanship, by trying to buy me out when I have family responsibility to continue working and providing college education and other benefits to my kids. And if they can't get enough of us bought out what will their next move be.
I know I am very bitter about all this.
The Clinton and McCain campaigns  are full of it.   Whoever is advising these 2 old people, need some help.  But given the last month and a half of Clinton's Campaign, this is typical to start with lies.
WEll well Obama speaks from his heart.  WE get a tiny peak at what Obama really thinks about small town America.
Obama screwed up, he told the truth.  I'm a democrat in the reddest of the red part of the "T" in PA, and the m,an has hit the nail on the head.
I am from Pa. snd I am insulted by Obamas condescending remarks. We do not cling to our guns or join religions [sounds marxist huh?]to assauge our frustrations. This guy is a pompous ,unfeeling wind bag .He and his wife have insulted America and whites through their own words and have been supportive of a racist demagogue who spews hate.I might be small town , but I am proud. Screw you Obama and all the moronic lemmings who drink the Kool Aid and blindly follow you over the Cliff
THIS IS SO STUPID---I LIVE IN RURAL INDIANA AND WHILE I LOVE AMERICA--- I AM BITTER AS MY HOUSE IS CLOSE TO FORECLOSURE AS A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER THAT HAS BEEN SHUT OUT.

WHAT THE HECK DID HE SAY WRONG?  HE SAID WHAT MY FAMILY AND I BELIEVE......

THE MEDIA IS HYPING THIS-- AND YOU SEE THAT HILLIARY IS DESPARATE--- SHE WILL JUMP ON THIS BUT NOTE THAT OBAMA DID NOT EVER DIRECTLY COMMENT ON HER LYING  REPEATEDLY!!!!

I WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN OR NO ONE IF OBAMA IS NOT THE NOMINEE.

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON THE WITCH HILLIARY-- DID SHE GET SO RILED UP AND MAD WHEN HER HUSBAND HAD REPEATED AFFAIRS? SHE WILL DO ANYTHING TO WIN!

HOW DARE PITIFUL JOHN MCCAIN EVEN SAY ANYTHING---DOES HE EVEN REMEMBER WHAT DAY IT IS????
I find nothing wrong or looking down on the remarks.  I don't know how Hillary makes that out to be that he's looking down.
I live in the midwest and alot of people in these situations are saying the exact same things themselves.
This is not a story.  Fowler is a Clinton supporter and this is exactly what Hillary wants.

I have a cousin in NC and he feels exactly as Obama describes it.  They have lost factory jobs and they do not have skills to find other jobs.  They are poor and are angry.  They do not have any faith in the government.

Unfortunately for Clinton this won't distract from her husband, Mark Penn and the Columbian trade deal.
Barack Obama offers the best future for America. He will bring to the White House a fresh perspective and he has already demonstrated shrewd business sense in the successful running of his campaign. Irrespective of 'bundlers' or 'bundles' one cannot fault him for inherent in these 'bundles' comprise small contributors making up the total contribution. Therefore to say he takes from billionaires and lobbyist is not quite true. If a group of individuals within an organization decides to contribute to a cause as a group you should not attach their contributions to the company they work for. This would be an unfair assessment of the matter.

I have also read some damning comments pertaining to Obama and his pastor and you all need to stop this. Many pastors and priests have not only said but have DONE immoral and illegal acts and quite rightly we do not attach their stigmas on their congregation so why condemn Obama for pastor Wright? Unfair!!!!

I have also seen unfavorable comments about his wife Michelle questioning her patriotism. I can only attribute this to ignorance, insensitivity and a lack of knowledge about PAST AND CONTINUED discrimination of blacks. It certainly is not only historical; it is quite current, just a bit more subtle. We may not be aware of her pain but it could be her experience and we should respect that. If you have a child that continuously disappoints and then shows positive signs that you approve of you will then be proud of him/her, but this has nothing to do with the love you have always had for your child. Look at Obama’s resume. It tells the story of the sacrifices he has already made for his country.

The Clintons tout experience but Hillary is yet to convince me of hers, in fact what I have seen of her experience to date is a badly run campaign that has financial challenges. How can this be when they are millionaires? Why not pay staff and provide health care for them out of private funds? I fail to see how the media can give them a free ride on these and other issues and then saddle Obama with his pastor.

Hillary and McCain are desperate and power hungry, waiting to latch on to everything Obama says and taking it out of context.

The world is watching to see if America will again drop the ball by passing up a golden opportunity to uphold democracy, demonstrate fair play and equality. America is a country of prominence and leadership. It is time to practice what is preached.

Elitist? OK coming from McBush (the OLD ANGRY WHITE  WAR MONGER) who married the woman he was having an affair with and was worth millions

And Billary (the LIAR-will do anything canidate) who's (joint tax return partner) took $800 thousand from Colombia while Billary says she's against the trade.

Sen OBama is the one who grew up with a single mother, was moved to Indonesia, was still paying off college loans until recently and he's the Elitist?

I guess better an Elitist then a "OLD ANGRY WAR MONGER" or a "LIAR"

Clinton campaign has done nothing but lie lie and lie again

People need solutions, not platitudes.   Go Barack!
I really cant understand how Hillary can look in the mirror every morning.  She laughs when someone asks her questions about the fact that her husband made a ton of money lobbying for the Colombian trade deal and then pounces on an out of context statement by Obama to deflect attention away from her legitimate problems.  The dirty political machine rolls on...
I think this article points out why Obama's numbers go up as voters get to know him. Voting for Obama can be seen as a risk - as Clinton hopes - or as an opportunity for a better country.

Clinton has no record of accomplishment, she spent most of her time in the White House fending off reporters inquiries about her husband's affairs and her investments. As a Senator she was already eyeing a White House run and voted for the war because at the time it was popular, and she was unwilling to be called soft on terror. McCain is Bush 3, my nightmare.

Obama said it best: Clinton and McCain are the bridge to the last century.
Dunno. The idea of Obama in a Frisco billionaires[an oil billionaire as it occurs], mansion in Pacific Heights capping on downeast Pennsylvanians as a pack of guntoting rednecks is surreal. Here is Obama,Janus-faced,saying one thing to the monied elite liberals who think they know how to tame the bread-and-butter Democrat bluecollar wild man[complete with guns'n'Jesus],and the other, who rails against the ''wealthy interests''when he comes down to moon pie-Pabst country. An aura of phonieness is descending upon the Expected One. Scratch Leavittown off yer list Barry.
you've got to be kidding
As someone who lives in a small town in rural America, I'd say Obama hit the nail on the head. The only people who are going to find fault in what he said are people who had no plans to vote for him anyway.
You Obamanoids will defend anything this man says.

Obama and Michelle fon't have a clue to what "small town"  people feel
Why is it that there's an anti-immigration movement in Western Pa. when Pittsburgh has the lowest population of Hispanics of any big city in the US? Simple, people are bitter about the hard times and are casting about for a scapegoat. Obama hit on some truths, and as a longtime resident of the Burgh, the only problem I see is he put it in such a way as to allow dillweeds to jump all over it. Like John McCain understands small town America? Give me a break.
Obama spoke the truth.  Anything resembling the truth would not strike a nerve with those hillbilly Clintons.  They don't care about this country-it's only about increasing their bank account.
I know I am bitter. I am sick of anytime Obama or the Clintons says anything, someone is so sensitive that they have to take an issue with it.  Just nick picking on everything.  McCain says all kinds of crazy stuff and no one says a thing. I am blaming the Democrats for that. Teflon John.

These two Democratic candidates need to prove to me who can beat McCain and stop beating each other down.   They need to stay on the issues and not what the other Democratic candidate said.

Vote Democrat 08
PA is like Ohio. They too will get snookered by the Clinton lies. well, they deserve what they get. no wonder she is going to win in PA because they are clearly not well educated enough to understand the context of what Obama was saying. The clintons will NEVER< EVER let a black man win. This is the last time I think we will have a black candidate. After what they have done to Obama, no one is going to want to run for office. Lets have 2 old people, 2 senior citizens lead us in the old, tired ways. We deserve it!!!!! Will never vote for HRC.
Again give it up Hillary! And McCain shame on you! We are getting so tired of the mudslinging. I like the upbeat message Obama is trying to send. We need a change in our Government! NOW!!!!!!!!!
If you think the American people aren't in some way bitter that the agenda in Washington does not involve them then you must be out of touch with "small Town" America.
They see their jobs being shipped overseas as well as conglomerates like Wal-Mart shut down the very essence of "small-town" life.  And one is to think the great American's who started their own "Mom and Pops" stores to help out their community and now see only jobs available that pay less and can never replace the dignity and pride once held by fulfilling the American Dream and becoming an entrepreneur are not bitter at all?  I believe even Mitt Romney said "Washington is Broken."
The spin the media has put on this is ridiculous.  I do agree that this may a little too honest to handle.  But "sixpack" Joe's moment of fame only lies in a election season.  That is when politicans care.  They want his vote, and unfortunately he gives it to them.  Politicans will say anything and do anything to get elected and many will do nothing for you when they are in office.  But this is the agenda in Washington.  Tell me how a great US President that did so much for the people can make over 110 million after leaving office, and now talk about solutions for the economy.  I think the theme should be "Solutions to hoodwink a bitter America."

Shows what he really thinks of people he's trying to get to vote for him.  He's so arrogant, condescending, close-minded, and holier-than-thou. It mystifies me how anyone can be taken in by this guy.

God's sent.
Welcome my president.
God has given you wisdom, go tell the people of America what they need to know.
I do not feel he meant to be talking down about small town people, the news/media should show the entire context, not just a few lines, I know I have been bitter when I lost my job and then unemployment and I agree that we the people do not believe what the government promises us because they never come through for us, I am still for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton tells tales and John McCain has already changed his tune from day one. . .
This shows that Obama really listens to people.  He cares and wants to help.  Thank you Obama.  Your honesty is refreshing.
It is sad that Obama gets away with putting down the hard working down and dirty workers of America and the ones in the trenches who make this country what it is.I am one of those workers and am offended in what he has said. It is a disgrace to all who give of them selves and the ones who have lost their jobs. Have been there know what it is like.

But of course I am not rich or well educated so what do I know, just a dirty down right worker trying to make a living. Give us some credit it would be  nice.
The people of Pennsylvania are more intelligent to fall for this crap, right?  Dear God I hope so.  All voters should do their research, take a minute, maybe 20 minutes of news or internet fact checking or read a reliable newspaper with your cup of coffee in the morning.  The facts are there, don't accept sound bites or spin.  You only get one vote and its your job, your kids education, your home, your country.  Do you trust the person you are voting for?  Do they appear authentic?  What do they stand for?  Do the facts support that?
They are bitter! I'm in NY and I'm bitter too! You "reporters" are really grasping at strings now. It's really getting sad. As for HRC - maybe if I made $100 mil a year, I could try not to be so bitter.
I am 73yrs old I live in a large town and  frustated
in the direction our country is going.Lost jobs.
home foreclosed, and rising cost of food gasoline.
Obama offers a hope and faith in ourselves and a
chance for change in our goverment to include each
and everyone as an American, and to improve ourself.
As I see the statement there is no attack on small
town people.Have you ever heard the saying if you
were having a dispute with someone and someone tells
you stick to your guns.

Seriously...? THIS is what HRC is pouncing on now??? Have all the straws been grasped to the point where there's nothing left but water?????
Good ole Clinton's using the media again.  Just imagine if Hillary was in the white house, Bill would be giving speaches every other day to defend her and then charge us taxpayers for the speaches. Here comes the kitchen sink again.  Sorry it's not going to work here because I'm voting for Obama whether he wins the nomination or not.  I'm tired of Bush-Clinton-Bush not other Clinton for me.
Obama seems to be saying that people in smaller town across America feeel disenfranchised and abandoned and are therfore just generally negative, apathetic and just generally against anythign that may be new...And who can blame them, they are the victims of Washington and it really isn't their fault....

Clinton seems to be saying that people may fit the first part of the description but in her experiance she thinks that these people are not negative but hungry for a president that provides leadership and a willingness to help them work their way out of what ever hole they may be in.

Sounds to me that one is talking about solving problems with social programs and the other is talking about solving problems with jobs.

I am getting really tired of Hillary Clinton and John McCain. It's clear that they have both lost their minds and are throwing any semblance of what respect they once had down the drain.

I mean, honestly, what a waste of time for either of their campaigns to insinuate that Obama said people in Pennsylvania are bitter. For one, taken out of context. Secondly, they have every right to be labeled as bitter because of the loss of jobs and the economy. I am bitter FOR THEM and I have a job! I am tired of seeing people in this company that are perfectly capable of hard work, providing for themselves and their families, just forgotten about because of overseas outsourcing.

I have never been more ready in my life for something to be resolved as I am for this campaign and this election. I want the stress gone from my life, I want to look forward to Obama trouncing McCain and ushering in a new era of government and prosperity.

Finally, I never had a complete love or hate for McCain. Never had much reason to judge him. But McCain is in no way an answer for our country. He is a bygone era, a relic, a person as out of tune with our country as George W Bush is. While I do at least truly respect that McCain thinks that what he believes is right, he is nothing more than a continuation of a long road to the abyss we have descended to for the past 7 years.

I have not looked forward to many things in my life more than I do saying the words President Obama.
Obama also said that his childhood days in Indonesia and his trip to Pakistan as a college student prepared him better to handle foreign affairs than Hillary's actual involvement for eight years in foreign policy matters.

This guy is the biggest joke. What is worse are those fools who accept this nonsense coming from an empty bag pipe as gospel truth. How pathethic! We will be better off with a 14 year old child being president than this liar, deceiver, divider, destroyer and incompetent evil doer.
