HRC: Obama says Pennsylvanians 'bitter'

Posted: Friday, April 11, 2008 6:49 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Mark Murray
PHILADELPHIA -- Hillary Clinton wanted Keystone State voters to know she doesn't look down on them, suggesting rival Barack Obama did.

"I've spent a lot of time traveling around this beautiful, historic state... I have a great deal of affection for the state and for the people and this campaign has been a privilege and a joy," Clinton told an enthusiastic crowd packing the same hall at Drexel University, where she took part in a fateful debate last fall. "It's being reported that my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who've faced hard times are bitter. Well, that's not my experience. As I travel around Pennsylvania, I meet people who are resilient, who are optimistic, who are positive who are rolling up their sleeves. They're working hard every day for a better future for themselves and their children. Pennsylvanians don't need a president who looks down on them. They need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them."

She was responding to remarks Obama made at a recent, closed-press San Francisco fundraiser about small-town Pennsylvanians. Her campaign sent emails to reporters earlier Friday afternoon pushing the story line.

The emails cited this Huffington Post article, which quotes Obama telling backers: "You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said. "And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

The McCain campaign also (ironically) pounced on the report from the Huffington Post, a liberal blog. "It shows an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking," McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told Politico. "It is hard to imagine someone running for president who is more out of touch with average Americans."

Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor responded with this statement: "Senator Obama has said many times in this campaign that Americans are understandably upset with their leaders in Washington for saying anything to win elections while failing to stand up to the special interests and fight for an economic agenda that will bring jobs and opportunity back to struggling communities.  And if John McCain wants a debate about who's out of touch with the American people, we can start by talking about the tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans that he once said offended his conscience but now wants to make permanent."

*** UPDATE *** The transcript (via Huffington Post) of Obama's remarks is below....

OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people are most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long. They feel so betrayed by government that when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism.

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What is the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is -- so, we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- to close tax loopholes, you know, roll back the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama's gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we're gonna provide health care for every American.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing.

My husband and I are 50 years old, and have lived in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area all of our lives. Barack Obama couldn't have been more accurate with his assessment of our area. The only well paying jobs here are in healthcare and education. And if you're connected, you could get a job with the corrupt local government. Most other jobs are in the low paying service industry.

My husband has commented for years about the overwhelming negative sentiment in our area. We really notice it when we return home from traveling.

"Ain't nutin' but the dead and dyin' back in our little town...."
I just saw a blurb of what she had to say. And I wholeheartedly disagree. Bitter isn't a bad thing, it makes you want to make changes and see changes made. Which is why I'm firmly entrenched in the Obama campaign.

I just returned to work last week after being unemployed for almost 3 mos due to my former employer having financial problems. Was I bitter, yes. At my employer? No. I'm bitter about the state of the economy in this country, I'm bitter because my voice hasn't been heard or when it is hadn't been listened to. I'm bitter because we're sending billions of dollars overseas to support a war that isn't ours while I was drawing $316/week unemployment. I'm bitter because the economy in this country is spiraling downwards like someone just pulled the plug out of a tub of water. I'm bitter because in 2008 people still have to ask "can a black man win the presidency".

So yes Senator Clinton I am bitter. Does that mean that I'm not doing anything about it. NO and her implication that being bitter renders me helpless and worthless is what is truly offensive.

I wish she'd call me. We could have a great talk about bitterness. I've used mine in a positive way - gotten deeply involved in this campaign for change. How has she used her bitterness? Clawing and scratching and lying - yeah call me.
Does it surprise anyone that Hillary is throwing anything she can?  I listened to her in Philly today and she made at least three negative, INACCURATE remarks about Obama.  She knows she is going down in flames and she is grasping at straws.  It's not just PA, people all over this country are bitter and tired of the crap. Obama is more in touch with most folks in this country than any other candidate, and he speaks the truth.

WORM = What Obama Really Meant

WORM is that middle America is downtrodden because of the evil Clintons (who brought 8 years of progress and economic growth). Give me a break.

WORM really meant is what he said. People who are economically downtrodden cling to guns and religion and trying blame those who are not like them. This may be the case sometimes. However, Obama is painting with his broad elitist brush. When my dad lost his manufacturing job (ultimately overseas) he did not start hating piling on minorities or clinging to his religion. His faith was a source of strength, not bigotry. When Obama and his supporters put down their collective latte, they are going to realize that middle America does not need someone to tell us the source of our economic problems. We need someone who offers a plan to help us. I was able to go to college in the Bill Clinton years because of increased access to financial aid. Eventually, I went back to school and earned my Ph.D. My parents were proud, and never once blamed another culture their problems.
Just finished reading Obama's Dreams of my Father book and thinking positively about him.  (But I would NEVER vote for him because he's pro abortion and way too liberal for me.) Then three hours later I hear him slamming small town people.  I left my small town in Michigan almost 50 years ago to go to college, but I have not forgotten my roots and the people who helped form me into a proud American. His condescending comments about small town people will send me to the Indiana polls next month to vote for Hillary.  I'll have to take a barf bag into the voting booth with me to I vote for her.  But I'll do it so that McCain will have an easier opponent than slick Barack in November. -- "None of the Above in 08"
Lee Holmes, "janus faced" - who's elitist?  you haters got it all wrong, you are the ones assume were all hicks. its insulting.
i am from s mall town and sick of pols talking down to us like were sunday school instead of main congregation, we get it, life stinks, telling us to go shopping to save our economy or from terrorists or distract us with division of them and those like its mexicans fault or islamists fault all the while taking dough from columbians or sendinf trillions to desert in iraq instead of my pocket, obama is refreshing
Obama was not exactly talking to one group of his supporters behind the back of potential Pennsylvania voters but the comments may be taken that way. People still have the freedom to think what they like so perhaps Barack has to watch what he says about others even though there may be no tape recorders visible to him. It's his judgement at stake and his race to lose.
After you beat your head against a wall for enough years, one morning you wake up & think "boy that hurts". And what good did it do, the wall just looks a little bloody. There are some of us out here "That have done so much with so little for so long, that we can do absolutely anything with nothing"!!!!!
Barack was close on what he said, it's just worse than that.  BS
Obama is telling the truth.  Here we go with the snipits again.  Play the entire speech!  You won't because it won't have the same sting.  HOW SAD!!!
Obama put both feet in his mouth by talking down small town America. The only thing he is sorry about is it on tape.
He needs to go back to Chicago with REv Wright,Rezko and William Ayers.
This proves he doesn't care who he thows under the bus not just his grandmother.
if it's so on the head, why does he say that to elitist crowds in sf, as far away from the people he is referring to as possible? he says what the crowd he is addressing wants to hear.  that is why he stayed in his church, that is why he is leading in the polls, that is why he made this comment.

oh and the obama campaign response?  change the subject (yet again).  the man (and i use that term loosely) has repeatedly shown that he won't directly address issues.   where have we seen that before?  four more years of bush it is.
Barack & Michelle are condescending and they turn their elitist noses up.  Uppity is another good word to describe them,  I have never, will never trust the man and I sure was not  stupid enough to vote for him.

Hillary has strength, she is tough, she is smart and she is committed to the middle class.

Obama is weak, lacks experience, has an extremely thin resume and is asking the American voters to trust him.  Change is good but not the kind that we would get with Obama,  He ran for the senate not because he wanted to be a senator but because he wanted to use it as a springboard to the Presidency.  God forbid.
Man the media and you guys are a bunch of cry babies! The man spoke the truth about how people feel because thats the way I feel. It is what it is! The truth hurts, Obamas speaks the truth about everything. What do you guys want him to do? "Lie" like Billary & McCain! Come on peoples use your common sense here

Thank You CNN GObama.........
This is really silly season, aren't people suppose to be bitter after losing their jobs? do people not resort to hobbies(guns eg) and other familiarities to ease their pain? guess my brain is injured and I practice medicine!
Once again Obama's comments are taken out of context. Applause to MSNBC to giving readers his full remarks so they can understand relate to exactly what he is saying!
The real story here is NOT that Obama said Pennsylvanians are bitter but that the Clinton and McCain Campaigns are so far out there that they don't realize that MOST Americans are bitter!  Bitter about jobs going overseas, bitter about a war that shouldn't have happened and should be ended, bitter about tax cuts for the wealthy, bitter about soaring costs of living and stagnate wages and lost jobs, bitter about a government that is out of touch with who they are and what their trials and tribulations are!
MSNBC sensor all the comment that critizise Obama. ABC Blogs is more fair than you, even FNC. Shame on you MSNBC to keep democracy and right to speak in USA!
Take a drive through small town Kansas and see half the main street downtown shops boarded up and vacant. Tell me that those folks are not a bit upset about the gutting of their once thriving towns.

Anyone that sees this and wants to paint a rosy picture is blind to the facts. By the way, towns more than 1 hour from a Walmart fair much better then those closer... hmmmm, anyone know a presidential candidate that was on Walmart's board for years?  Anyone?

Being blind to the facts will not make small town America come back... I recently visited my Hometown of Constantine, MI and must say that it was a sad affair. The GM plant is gone and so are the high paying jobs. Beautiful old homes are in disrepair or split into low income poorly maintained apartments. The town has a drug problem and when stopping at the local gas station a member of the girls soccer team was buying cigarettes.

I am bitter about this... I bet more than a few Pennsylvanians are too.

Oh dear, the kitchen sink must be nearly empty to be pulling stuff like this out. I found it ironic that the previous thread in First Read is the one about Bill complaining about "distractions" and "making mountains out of molehills".

Bill, meet Hillary. Hillary, meet Bill.
The reason this is especially decontextualized is because most people who are reading this don't realize that, in speaking to San Franciscans, it is very much a social tension in the outlying areas that are rural, where people do NOT understand each other. I live 40 miles north of San Francisco and there are more people here who wear cowboy hats and work on ranches and tote guns than anywhere I've been in Pennsylvania. So it makes sense that Barack had to address this in San Francisco, because there is a liberal elitism there towards ordinary folks that is really important to start breaking down.

It's much more telling about the relationship of San Francisco to the rest of California than anything.

I'm glad Barack spoke to people in SF who have this view of embittered folk like myself. We ARE bitter, at times, with the disdain and lack of action that our out of touch Government officials have taken. Look at what so-called progressives like boxer, feinstein, and woolsey have done in rallying behind Clinton when two of their districts were won by Barack.

Now, I'm a classic Sonoma County gal -- I AM a progressive but let me tell you, I've got a membership with both the aclu and the nra, AND jobs are HORRIBLE here. The liberal government here has done nothing to cap the 650K average home price or cost of living, yet the average wage is 45K a year. I'm VERY angry with MY local Government. And the Republican Governor? Forget it. He shut down all of our elementary schools AND state parks.

Are we bitter? Yep. Poor? Yep. A lot like the rest of the country? Yep. Angry with San Francisco and its ilk for driving next to us on the highway listening to KPFA and totally ignoring the problems in their midst? Totally. Voting for Barack? In the majority.

Hillary AND McCain made themselves look really out of touch with their ridiculous counterpunches. Who are they even pandering to? I'd say the wealthy San Franciscans, to reassure them they will never try to ask them to exit from their comfortable reality bubbles and see the actuality of all the pain out here in the real world.

Hillary with her 109 million dollars and McCain with his wife, the heiress of a beer fortune, populists? Whatever. Barack lived in Kansas AND in an Indonesian ghetto.
I totally agree with Obama, It seems as if no one wants to face the facts. Moreover, the news is spinning this the wrong way. Every Body in the country is feeling the pain; Obama is saying what needs to be said, about the situation in the country. The politicians and the corporations have screwed us so badly. That there is a feeling of hopelessness in the middle class who are devastated by the present conditions. The reporters who support these people in destroying the country. Should be helping the people to understand what is going on. Instead of twisting, what Obama has said for ratings? I am glad that we have someone who is willing to speak truth to the American people. Enough of what you want us to hear. No more, Lets face the facts and move forward. Furthermore Who cares what lying Hillary has to say. what is worse someone who lies to you all the time, or someone who is will to stand up for what is right and truthful. And give hope back to the people and the world.
First they were not billionare, they were middle class.

Second, he was talking about the government, letting down the people of small towns, but the idiots only heard what they wanted to hear.

He was standing up for small towns, and this campaign is getting ridiculous.

Every comment he makes is going to be cut and comb over, until they find something they don't like.
Obama is right. He is what we need for America
When you run your campaign like a revival and your followers are "true believers" you think that you can say anything. The problem will come when Obama cannot do any miracles. How does he plan to unite the country with a racist minister, the most liberal voting record in the Senate and remarks like these? He may yet win the primary but will lose the general election. He is a typical Chicago politician.

God I live with people like Obama described in upstate NY!  How true it is about the bitterness.

Hillary is slipping in the polls in PA and once again is grasping at straws. Obama tells it like it is. People are bitter about the state of affairs in America. Anyone who doesn't see that is wearing blinders. Hillary give it up already, McCain take some ginko and a nap.
"WANNA" AND "GONNA"

ARE NOT REAL WORDS, BARRUCK

It's not proper grammar from a suposedly intelligent, educated man. And, can anyone explain why he switches from referring to himself in the first person singular to the third person in the same sentence?? That is just wrong... and sometimes indicates an issue easily resolved with some counseling.
Obamabots, poor naive, obamabots. The issue is not centered on his noting that we smalltowners are frustrated. We may well be. The problem is St Obama insists that beacuse we are angry we turn to religion [hmmm opiate of the people?], grab our guns ,and go huntin them thar foreyners and coloreds. What a condescending piece of crap. And this is the great Uniter. Drink of the Sacred Kool Aid Obama nuts. Me thinks your Deity is a false one. If you live in Pa. and dont find this insulting ,elitist, pompous and demeaning then you deseve this moron
I think it's really awful that the Clinton and McCain campaigns are so out of touch with the American People that they don't know that WE ARE BITTER about the failures of our government to protect our interests.
many people in this country ARE bitter.  if we were happy with current administration, the dem primary would have come and gone. instead it is turning out to be one of the most watched primary that i can remember in recent times.
After reading Obama's statements I don't think they are as bad as Hilliary, McCain & some of the press make them out to be.  I think there are a lot of Americans who are disappointed in government and impartially career politicians like Hillary and McCain.

Hilliary's do anything, say anything, to win and  kitchen sink strategy only plays to the worst elements of human nature.  And as for McCain, the Straight Talk Express has done a 180 degree turn on tax breaks for the rich.  Furthermore, McCain's desire to stay in Iraq (even if it is for 8 years) will only worsen our economy.
Excuse me Media - This is not an issue.  People need to really hear what he has said.  One of the main things he has consistently said throughout his campaign is that he will speak the truth.  He will say what needs to be said and not sugar coat.
The nerve of Billary Clinton to say what she said was dumb... and by the way, which personality was she using today when she made her comments?  You people think you know Hillary Clinton, but how can you really say that when 1) she has repeatedly shown her MANY personalities and 2) she had repeatedly shown her ability to lie.  Get a grip.
Bill Clinton is a true racist also.  When he needed the black people and they voted for him, he was always saying good things.  But now that the black people are seeing him for who he is, he is making all these racial comments which only shows how he really feels about black people.
This whole thing is ridiculous. First of all, taken out of context. Second of all, true. I am from Pennsylvania and I am bitter every single miserable day because I can't afford to get my teeth fixed and I can't afford to buy my kid PJs and my health care is horrible and expensive and I can't afford to take my kids to the movies anymore and I had to go without heat for a couple of days this winter because I couldn't afford oil and I can't buy Oreos anymore but have to buy generic cookies, if I can even buy them at all, and my car broke down but i couldn't afford to get it fixed and... AND! I HAVE THREE JOBS!! I am SO SICK of statements of all three candidates being taken out of context and picked apart. What is wrong with the media?? Why don't we as Americans do something about how corrupt the media is? Dang!! Are we really this stupid??
Obama is completely right. I am in Pittsburgh and I completely agree. I am a Republican and I agree with Obama.
They are bitter because Hillary took away their jobs while she made Millions and another $800,000 planning another job sapping Columbian deal.
Shame on you, Hillary!
I see nothing in Obama's comments that deserve to be attacked. I grew up in a small town in central PA, and it is true that people are trying to figure out how to make a living in families where education beyond high school is not considered an option. They do get bitter and feel forgotten, and acknowledging that fact is NOT condescending, its realistic. And by the by, I'm a Hillary supporter - we don't all hate Obama, we just think she's the better choice.
Bitter is a mild way to describe the feeling when you wake up in the morning to go to work for $10./hr ,no insurance ,pay $3.48/gallon of gas ,a son in Iraq ,another son back from Iraq with emotional problems, no help from the V.A. and i haven't mentioned the usual stuff like food ,power ,telephone  ,you know things that Hillary and McCain haven't worried all their life...Bitter ,yes ,i'll have to agree at the risk of being called out of touch and elitist....
It is arrogant. But, what's new about that. He is arrogant all the time. Why did he have to stereotype people? Did he include "typical white person(s)" in the group that are skeptical about those who don't look like them? And, look at who his audience was? They certainly weren't people who could understand the plight of middle America. Where did "cling to guns" fit into his statement.
But, his candidacy is "never" about race. But, look at the two comments from the article:
1)"it’s true that when it’s delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism" and 2) Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.'

He's a hypocrite, fake, fraud/
RIch D in PA: wipe the spittle off our mouth and listen for a second.............what the man said is pretty true!  I live in a fairly small dell and let me tell ya, half the people in this town are still fuming about Obama's middle name for Heaven's sake!  We have preachers here who wax poetic about love your neighbor, but do absolutely nothing to help e poor in their own back yard.  Be proud all you want brother, but it's not that the Obamas insulted America.........they have hit the red raw nerve of TRUTH      OBAMA 08
CNN says Obama "Slams Small Town America" and one pundit says he should apologize.  Where do they get that from? This is not a slam.  It is a statement of his understanding of why they might be hesitant to support him.  They are bitter and quite tired of politicians promising what they never deliver just to get elected (how many jobs in N.Y was that Hillary? 200,000 or -30,000)

Obama should not back away from the characterization that those who are losing their jobs and their homes are bitter.  He should continue to show he truly understands their plight and has ideas for what to do about it (the jobs aren't coming back - retool into new manufacturing opportunities like green energy equipment).

But what do I know.  I'm not from small town American.  They will speak a week from Tuesday and then we'll know.

Obama '08
Kool aid drinkers are in denial. Obama came across as a liberal elitist hanging out with BILLIONAIRES in San Francisco. He insulted small town America. Fine, that is his rights. But there are superdelegates in small town America. OH, and people, too. Obama is a bigot.
Speaking of bitter...   Have you been reading what Obama supporters have to say about Hillary?
Obama is absolutely correct in his evaluation of small town PA.  Although I live in New Jersey, I'm originally from Lawrence County, PA ("Pittsburgh in the west").  I still have many relatives in Clarion County, PA ("Alabama in between"; "Long live the NRA and KKK"), and I would describe them that way, too.  The pundits don't understand because they didn't grow up there, and the politicians will use the remarks for their own purposes rather than dealing with the reality that small town PA needs jobs!
The PEOPLE rule.  I'm impressed.  The people have awakened and MAY realize that this is THEIR country.  Surprised, aren't you, all you news-folk hyping the old-guard.  Bridge to the last century?  More like a non-stop express train - backwards.
Here we go again. What Sen. Obama said was correct and not slaming small town workers. Post the entire comments. The media takes anything he saids out of content. Excuses are made when Bill Clinton, as late as yesterday, made a comment regarding Sen. Obama  saying " well he can say he did not still a car".  I have heard nothing regarding this since early this morning. Sen. Obama hit the nail on the head! He speaks the truth, but other candidates wants him to say what they want and do. Senator Obama is brilliant, confident and is not a push over...If there is a difference in the polls it is because of the media filling the public with partial facts to continue the racism in this country. First, he is not experience enough when there have been presidents with the same experience, if not less. I am beginning to believe these tactics are made because you the media (CNN)and your major audience do not want to see this country led by an intelligent "True American" that happens to be an African American. You want him to stay in place, the place you place him, not now nor ever!!!  Shame on you!
He gets it, he understands.  He's actually been there/here.
My oh my!  When Bill Clinton said "this is the biggest fairy tale ever..." the media and Obamanoids jumped all over this and said he was racist.  They rarely used the full context which would have shown that he was talking about Iraq.  I'm rather enjoying the spin and squirm going on this hour.  And of course, Matthews, Olbermann, Roland on CNN have already started saying "what he really meant to say..."  Time to head back to Pennsylvania, Senator Obama and have more beers and bowl with bitter folk.  Amazing what this guy says behind closed doors to a rich, big donating crowd in CA.  He's Rev Wright Jr.
i sure would like people see the CLINTON TAPES How people were snuffed out when he was govenor
