Obama pushes back against criticism

Posted: Saturday, April 12, 2008 12:45 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
TERRE HAUTE, IN -- Last night, Obama tried to douse water on a potential political firestorm, after comments he made about voters in Pennsylvania being "bitter" drew strong criticisms from both Clinton and McCain.

At a closed fundraiser this past Sunday, Obama told the crowd that Pennsylvania voters were "bitter" because little had been done by both the Clinton and Bush Administrations to stem the loss of manufacturing jobs and improve the economy in small and economically depressed communities throughout the state. Those comments drew quick responses from his rivals who said that the comments reeked of condescension
"
Last night here, Obama responded with an impassioned justification, trying to rhetorically turn the word controversy into to his own advantage. "I was in San Francisco talking to a group at a fundraiser," he said. "And somebody asked me, 'Well, how are you gonna get votes in Pennsylvania? What's going on there? We hear that it's hard for some working-class people to get behind your campaign. Why is that?' I said, 'Well, look, they're frustrated. And for good reason, because for the last 25 years, they've seen jobs shipped overseas, they've seen their economies collapse. They have lost their jobs, they've lost their pensions. They've lost their health care. And for 25, 30 years, Democrats and Republicans have come before them and said we're going to make your community better. We're gonna make it right. And nothing ever happens.'"

"And of course they're bitter. Of course they're frustrated. You would be too -- in fact, many of you are. Because the same thing has happened here in Indiana, same thing happened across the border in Decatur, the same thing has happened across the country. Nobody's looking out for you. Nobody is thinking about you," he said to applause.

He repeated his comments that people turn to wedge issues to vote, but couched it in terms of his argument that it was Washington's fault. "So people end up, they don't vote on economic because they don't expect anybody's going to help them. Some people end up, you know, voting on issues like guns, are they gonna have the right to bear arms. They vote on issues like gay marriage. They take refuge in their faith and their families and the things they can count on. But they don't believe they can count on Washington."

Clinton campaign spokesman Phil Singer responded by saying that instead of taking an opportunity to apologize for his comments, Obama chose to embrace them. It’s unfortunate that Sen. Obama didn’t say he was sorry for what he said.  Americans are tired of a President who looks down on them -- they want a President who will stand up for them for a change. The Americans who live in small towns are optimistic, hardworking and resilient. They deserve a president who will respect them.”

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds also pounced on Obama's remarks. "Only an elitist who attributes religious faith and gun ownership to bitterness would think that tax cuts for the rich include families who make $75,000 per year. Only an elitist would say that people vote their values only out of frustration. Barack Obama thinks he knows your hopes and fears better than you do. You can't be more out of touch than that."

Obama was anything but contrite in his response, and he used it as an opportunity to label both McCain and Clinton as out of touch. "Here's what's rich," Obama said of Clinton's and McCain's attacks. "Sen. Clinton says, 'Well I don't think people are bitter in Pennsylvania. I think Barack's being condescending.' John McCain says, 'Oh, how could he say that? How could he say people are bitter. He's obviously out of touch with people.' Out of touch? Out of touch? I mean, John McCain, it took him three tries to finally figure out that the home foreclosure crisis was a problem, and  to come up with a plan for it, and he's saying I'm out of touch?"

Obama returned to an old line of attack for Clinton, hitting her on her vote for the bankruptcy bill, which he claimed "made it harder for people to get out of debt after taking money from the financial services companies.

"And she says I'm out of touch?" he asked the crowd.

Keep smacking them down Obama
Clinton has 100 million in the bank, uses tax dollars to travel and McCain is married to a Beer Hieress..

So whos elitist????
Those 2 especially Clinton are losers
Great response by Obama.  Americans are bitter after 20 years of Bush and Clintons!
All politics, no substance.
What he said makes perfect sense to me? Many people are bitter--and they do turn to wedge issues! McCain's and the Hill's agruement are out to touch!
The truth about Obama is finally coming to light.
He is a elitist, he is condensending.  He belives that just sitting down and talking with our enemies that if they just listen to his "wonderful" words that they will lay down their arms and become our friends.
Please America, WAKE UP!!!!!
Vote Hillary.
This is so much ado about nothing.  What Senator Obama said is basically true and Clinton and McCain are trying to use it as a wedge issue.  Americans are bitter, and they should be about the state of our country, our place in the world, and our future.  The mstake Obama made was in tying that bitterness with religion and guns.  This may hurt him in the general election, but I would argue that people who vote on these issues would vite for McCain anyway.

What Obama needs to do is visit small town PA next week and talk about the bitterness.  He can use this to his advantage if he is savvy.
It is Senator Clinton and President Clinton who reek of condescention.  The way the belittle anyone who disagrees with them and use wedge issues to tear apart the Democratic Party is appaling.  Obama is the only hpe we have .  If Clinton somehow wins the nomination, I will end my 20 year affiliation with the Democratic Party!
Lets see, elitist ? out of touch with the average citizen? Lets get real here, McCain's wife is worth about 100 million dollars and the Clintons made 100 million the last 10 years, mainly giving speeches( real hard work there). How can either of them even pretend to know how the avg homeowner/worker feels when his/her house may be foreclosed or his/her work hours are being cut, not to mention trying to decide buying groceries or gas for the car.
Obama said nothing wrong; his statements are being distorted by Hillary, who is increasingly pathetic and sort of psycho -- hello, laughing at the questions about her husband's involvement with Colombia?

Yesterday three senior political reporters on CNN recognized what a non-story this is and laughed over the ludicrousness of it. Hopefully others in the traditional media (hint, hint, MSNBC) will soon realize it too.
Obama's right.  Hillary and McCain are the ones out of touch and looking to preserve and wallow in the past, rather than looking opening and honestly for the path to a better future.  Open and honest observations as to the current plight of the middle class should be encouraged, not criticized by those candidates rooted in the polarized past
Bitterness is outweighing optimism in my community - at the gas pump, the grocery store, the real estate office, the schools, the health clinic, the National Guard Armory.  Senator Obama shows empathy, not disrespect.
The one who is out of touch with America is Hilliary and McCain. They don't realize that people are suffering and working hard for less. How can she say the Obama is an elitist when she makes 109 million dollars? Well no wonder she does not understand working class families and think we are not angry and bitter about the economy as well as lack of jobs. She is the one that is condensending when her husband receives 800,000 dollars to speak in behalf of CAFTA. She championed to outsource our jobs due to NAFTA.  She and her husband shipped our jobs away and she is saying we are not bitter. Check again Hilliary. We are bitter and angry that you are profiting from our job loss.
To quote the Rev. Wright, it looks like the chickens are coming home to roost for Mr. Obama.
I appreciate Senator Obama for his honesty.
He speaks the truth, and we Americans must
learn to face reality. He did not speak to
belittle people--that is not his nature.  He
is trying to focus our  minds on real issues,
so that we as Americans can work together to find solutions. Our nation must come together and Senator Obama has the vision and wisdom to make this happen.
Yes, we in the middle class are bitter. Clinton and her lackeys don't see it because they're so far from the middle class that they don't have a clue. Any press who bash Obama over this are also out of touch. We're tired of politicians who act like everything's great for us on one hand while making promises on the other. It sucks out here in the middle class world sometimes. That's just how it is. Obama's just saying, "Hey, I'm not going to say things just to make you feel good."
New York New York what a wonderful town!
Everywhere else it hurts to be Billary...
Go back to the NY and take that Carville idiot with you...
Calling Bill Richardson a Biblical character...
Is this the only one you know or follow in the scriptures?
I am in the military and Obama is correct. We are bitter and it is time for a change. Hillary just wants to play duck duck goose with sniper fire in Bosnia and people without health insurance who really do have health insurance.
well there he gose another great speech trying to put blame on someone eles and blame them  for words that came out of his own mouth  turning it around and saying poor me thir trying to make me look bad when its him hisself that has done it and some people will be so blind to see him for what he is doing they will belive him and it just want be them that will suffer for it it will be us all if he is the nominee and if he talks his way into becomeing the president
Why is MSNBC not showing the clip of Obama's response to this "bitter" debate in Terre Haute, Ind.? Instead, of letting the man speak for himself, your reporting is focusing on him saying the words were "ill chosen". Is that the news? What's the real story? That he says he stands behind the message he was delivering, that folks across the country are frustrated, they are angry and they are bitter ..." That's the news ... not whether the way he put it was "ill chosen" ... enough with the semantics, it is old and tired, no matter the denifition of "is" is.
It is clear Clinton, and McCain will target their attacks on Obama, in an attempt to censor him. For all their threats, and posturing about his so-called past, they have no legitimate way to frustrate his ascent to the Presidency. They mean to try to shut him up. They know that the more he speaks to the voters, he wiil continue to gain supports. They will twist, then criticize everything he says. They are envious not only of the purity of his message, but also his God given gift of coummnication. The haters are busy in their campaigns fueled by envy, and use of slight of hand. We see them for what they are. They are devious, jealous losers.

Pulling for Obama '08

(Because it is so easy when you have a candidate you support who does not shame, and embarrass you, who is young, sincere, vigorous, honest, brilliant, brave, humble, eloquent, healthy, moral, and chosen by millions of other voters who are all helping to pull for him too! So yes, pulling for Barack, since you asked is going very well).
Yep the Clintons earned 109 million while HRC promised New York 200,000 jobs and lost 30,000 while she voted contrary to the agricultural industry of her state. (???)  Who is out of touch.  Ask those New Yorkers who voted for her who volunteered to be in a 527 funded movie against her for the GOP.  They state clearly who they believe is out of touch.  She hasn't had a great track record in New York.  Look at her local legislation, its laughable!  They were a stepping stone back into the white house.  We need a separate interest bearing slush fund to cover the cost of upcoming investigations for the Clintons if she wins the presidency becasue they are sure to occur.
Nancy from Florida:

YOU ARE A RANTING NUT!!
Seems to me that Obama was trying to educate one group of people, upscale Cali donors, about another group of people he comes into contact with, rural folks who've experienced hard times. Nothing elitist or demeaning in that. You have to know something about each other in order to effectively work together for a better future.
Why I am bitter:
1)I am bitter because of the state of our economy
2)I am bitter because our jobs are being shipped overseas
3)I am bitter because we are fighting a war we shouldn't have waged.
4)I am bitter because we are spending $10b every month in iraq, money that we need seriously here.
5)I am bitter that Iraq has about $50b of its money lodged in foreign account, while we are using tax payer's money to rebuild the country.
6)I am bitter that we are losing the effort to catch osama bin laden.
7)I am bitter that our great country has lost its respect in the international forum.
8)I am bitter that our dollars has become a laughing stock of the world. That right here in the states, some businesses no longer accept the dollar as a legal tender.
9)I am bitter because hardworking folks are being laid off their jobs and have lost all their savings.
10)I am bitter that honest and hard working folks are facing foreclosures.
11)I am bitter because the solution to the foreclosure problem from our law makers is to reward the mortgage banks and people who created the problem in the first place, while providing nothing for the people at the risk of losing their homes.
12)I am bitter because we keep borrowing from china and other countries, thereby leaving debts upon debts for the future generation.
13)I am bitter because there are so many other reasons why I should be bitter and our government is doing nothing to fix it.
14)Finaly, I am bitter because the only person amongst our presidential candidates who recognizes that I'm bitter and that I have a genuine reason to be, is being crucified for saying the truth.
As ususal, Obama is pitch perfect.

We're mad as hell, and we want CHANGE!
It's over the top now...too much...there is no way Senator Obama can win the General Election!!  It's that simple, for those of you that believe otherwise..remember, Wright, Rezco, wealthy bundlers and now his Pennsylvania characterization...it's called, bigotry!!

For a man that professes such great command of "words"...he's out of his league and the REAL STORY is his total lack of judgement!!

If you don't want to agree or disagree with what he says...how about his judgement?  It's sorely lacking!!

This country is in dire need of someone we can trust to be President of the United States...who will represent ALL Americans!!  Someone whose judgement we can trust...someone who doesn't just talk about unity put endeavors to unify!!  That's NOT who Senator Obama is!!!!!!!!
How dare Obama tell the truth? How dare Obama say that Bush won a 2nd term because folks voted based on cynicism and now the economy is being grounded? How dare Obama be so courageous to tell me in my face that I'm bitter that I lost my job?
Or maybe, I'm being stupid here for shying away from the truth.
I'm unhappy to hear the truth, though, but you are 100% right.

I'll vote for you, this time, Barack.
explaining how its our fault we didnt let him buy us or fall on our knees when he pulls into town. Can you imagine the nerve. He makes me sick to look at him let alone that drone voice. If we are so bitter stay away.empathy my ass. There is a big difference between bitter and  angry but still working to upgrade like Hillary says. We arent quitters and it sounds like thats what he is makeing us out to be. He got into trouble explaining why he cannt win here and thats the reason. he has no idea what we are about.I have lived in small towns in lots of places and most choose to be there for each other. Yes we want better but we pull togeather and we will make it.people  like there hunting and shoots and yes guns are good for us but not like he says. He signed that paper trying to ban guns, manufactoring and ownership thats why he brought that up. another blameing us cause we want them makeing us look dumb. He doesnt have to look down on me cause I think he is the bottom of the barrel. You people can bow and cow all you want to  makes you look just like him.
OH PLEASE if Hillary had said this you would be BASHING her.  So why do  Obama backers only see what they want to see.... You are not pro Obama just anti Clinton. That is such a stupid reason to vote for someone. I remember that the economy was good with a Clinton in the office now I think it will be even better. Hillary has great ideas, I  listened to her on the Cramer show amongst other shows. You guys just see what the media wants you to see, snippits of ONLY bad controversial stuff. If you are on this website I assume you should be well informed... but then to assume is to.......
It's about time he pushed back.  The concept of the Clinton's believing they are gods in this world has to end.
I feel Sen. Obama was right on target!!! We in Pa. are angry at the loss of jobs, the health care crisis, and the complete arrogance of this administration and lack of the voters feeling and concerns.  Cheney and his So remark made me so mad, I wanted to jump right through the TV and smack him.  At least Obama spoke the truth and what does he get but criticiscm.  Well not from me.  From me, he gets my vote!!!!!
