Obama PA sportsmen push back

From NBC’s Cherelle Kantey
In this afternoon’s conference call sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sportsmen and Sportswomen for Obama, small-town politicians said the latest attacks from the Clinton campaign are shameless, aimed at creating divisions in their communities.

“Trying to turn small-town Pennsylvanians against each other for political gain is shameless,” said Mayor John Fetterman of Braddock, Pa. Fetterman blasted the New York senator for trying to win votes by patronizing gun owners, a move he said shows a willingness to win at all costs.

“I think it's really discouraging and tacky to see Hillary Clinton pandering as if she's a gun owner,” said Fetterman. “I think it demonstrates and represents willingness to say anything and everything to get elected.”

Rep. Dan Surra (D-PA) said he shares the frustration of the constituents he represents.

“I represent the people that Barack Obama was talking about, that people who have lost their jobs,” Surra said. "I think he understands, there is a frustration out there.”

The Obama campaign conceded that the remarks weren’t properly worded, but their message was correct.

“I think Obama was clear that he could have chosen words better, but the case he was making was right,” said Leslie Miller, Pennsylvania communications director for the Obama campaign. “Washington has left working people behind and the attacks that have come from Sens. Clinton and McCain are not going to change Barack Obama's record."

At the conclusion of the call, the sportsmen made it clear that they intend to support Obama, who they say has genuine interest in the concerns of small-town communities.

“Barack Obama has reached out to sportsmen; he’s reached out to blue-collar people,” Surra said. “And I think the reason it’s being blown up like it is, because they don’t want to talk about who can really bring the change that we need.”

Hillary gets her ass handed to her.  When was the last time she fired a gun?
Grasping at straws comes to mine here; Obama supporters! Obama is a ego maniac and very arrogant. We in small town America have figured this out more than a month ago! His rock star status and fame just went to his head and let him show us the truth of who he really is! The whole Rev Wright issue only confirmed it. What the Obama flock and the media don’t get or the DNC for that matter doesn’t get is, it is not about Rev. Wright or his views, as wrong as they may be. It is about how Obama handled that issue which was so reveling. It was the same with the Canadian issue. It wasn’t the issue as much as the lies and smooth smug answers and never taking responsibility that we find unfit in a Presidential candidate. It is the same over and over again. Under the bus, Typical white, didn’t know about statements, Ok knew about but was not in church, not there, Only 5, Ok dozens, Ok general trend, I would have left but retiring, No meeting took place, ok a meeting took place but not about NAFTA, Ok NAFTA was mentioned but no talk of campaign rhetoric, on and on it goes! Farrakhan, Avery, McCulkin, William Ayers, this list is getting rather long isn’t it? NOW WE HAVE BITTER SMALL TOWN LAZY WHITE FOLK WHO ARE GUN TOTEN RELIGION LOVING RACIST……..
After claming that she "won" Michigan and Florida, now comes Hillary to the defense of the gun owners and the the religous faithful....Shameless...She has shown repeatedly thatshe has no problem lying or tearing apart her own party in pursuit of power.  Truly scary.
No he really didn't realize he used the wrong words for at least a day when he still defended his words and then on the second day he "realized" he used the wrong words.  In other words he realized it would affect his candidacy so who is the candidate who will say anything for their win??? He just hides it well in rhetoric. Let me guess everyone will say he did another bone headed move.  Because he does bone headed moves while Hilary does devious things, I am just glad the double standard is just so much more obvious now to the point of being ridiculous.
I can barely contain how angry I am at Hillary Clinton right now.  She is using this minor slip-up in wording to make sure that when she loses the nomination, she takes Obama down with her.  She knows full well that he is absolutely right about the bitterness out there.  She's doing the worst kind of political pandering and it makes me sick!  I can't believe I voted for both Clintons twice!  NEVER AGAIN!  If Hillary manages to win the nomination, there is now way in hell I will vote for her - I'll sit out an election for the first time in my life.
Right on PA Sportsmen & women. Billary couldn't find the truth in a dictionary.  All they know is war, class, gender, race. They don't care who or what, they just want to put people against one another for their own political gain.
Anybody but OBAMA!!!

I am so sick of this media darling...

This lifetime democrat will be proudly voting Republican in November. I would never want this man as the President of my country. Inexperienced, elitest, and snobbish.

Clinton-McCain '08
AMEN!!!!

McCain & Clinton = net worth $100 MILLION PLUS

Stand your ground Obama. The 2nd ammendment isn't going any where but our jobs are going out of the country!

NC for Obama
Thanks for the voice of reason. I'm glad some people are cutting through the Clinton nonsense.  Bitter, angry, frustrated... what's the difference?  Nothing.  Everyone knows what he's talking about and what he means.  People are DEFINITELY bitter and angry about having their country and their lives crippled over the last 7 years.
OH snap
Yes, the Sportsmen agree with Obama that they are "clinging" to guns out of bitterness over the economy! Pure Irony! The Obama camp's effort to marshall a response to criticism for his own impassioned sentiment is nothing short of pathetic.

Of course Senator Clinton is not pandering to gun owners, or church goers or bigots!  You would think that Obama's "Sportsmen" would be insulted by his portrayal of them to a Cream of the Crop, rich Marin County audience that Obama is absolutely at home with.

This is going to kill us in the General Election. Thanks Obama Supporters.
Well spoken.  The Clintons have proven they will do anything to win.  I believe this is another display of smoke and mirrors to divert attention from Hillary's outright lies regarding her Bosnia trip and The doublespeak regarding Penn and NAFTA.  I will support Barack Obama to the very end because I get it. The residents of Pennsylvania are much wiser than Hillary thinks.
I agree with the PA Sportsmen completely. Senator Obama's remarks are being blown way out of proportion. Maybe it was not the best choice of words, but he understands the blue collar working class of people in this country and how they feel. Senator Clinton is acting out of desperation, and will try anything and do anything to when the nomination of her party. I believe she wants to win so bad, she doesn't care if it costs the Democrats the White House in November. She needs to stick to the issues and quit attacking her opponent on trivial matters.  Enough is enough.
Yeah, you tell 'em!  The good people in PA can see right through this woman's pathetic pandering.
ANOTHER PATHETIC ATTEMPT BY HILLARY TO PRETEND SHE IS "A REGULAR JANE"- PLEASE- REGULAR JANES ARE WONDERING HOW THEY ARE GOING TO PUT GAS INTO THEIR CARS AND HOW THEY ARE GOING TO PAY THEIR ELECTRIC BILLS- NOT MAKING 110 MILLION IN THE PAST 10 YEARS.
I AM A WHITE PROFESSIONAL WOMAN WHO HAPPENS TO LIVE IN UPSTAE NY-SENATOR CLINTON IS MY SENATOR (AND I HAVE VOTED FOR HER TWICE!) AND I AM BITTER ABOUT THIS WAR, THE STATE OF OUR ECONOMY AND HOW SHE HAS CONDUCTED HERSELF THRU OUT THIS PRIMARY SEASON.
SHE WILL NEVER GET ANOTHER VOTE FROM ME,FROM MY HUSBAND OR OUR 2 COLLEGE AGE DAUGHTERS WHO HAVE EDUCATED US TO TO DRINK THE "BITTER" OBAMA KOOL-AIDE. I HAVE DONATED TO OBAMA SEVERAL TIMES ( A LITTLE HERE, A LITTLE THERE AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT HIM) HE IS A GOOD MAN (EVEN HILLARY SAID THAT TODAY)
I WOULD HAVE EVEN SUPPORTED HIM ASKING HER TO BE VP(NOT ANY MORE-SHE SOUNDS ORE AND MORE REPUBLICAN EACH DAY WITH EACH VILE COMMENT FROM HER MOUTH)
SHE IS REALLY REACHING HERE- PERHAPS OBAMA "MIS SPOKE" ABOUT THE BITTER COMMENT.-SHE SHOULD KNOW ALOT ABOUT THAT- NAFTA, MARK PENN BEING "FIRED" AND OF COURSE THE BOSNIAN SNIPER FIRE SHE HAD TO ENDURE. SHE LIES SO MUCH AND THEN "ACTS" SURPRISED AND CRYS WHEN SHE IS CAUGHT TO GET THE SYMPATHY VOTE. NOW SHE CLAIMS TO BE A CHURCH GOING, GUN TOTING REGULAR GI JANE!!! RIGHT- PERHAPS SHE NEEDS A GUN TO PROTECT HER MULTI MILLION DOLLAR HOMES! WE ALL KNOW IF SHE ACTUALLY HAD A GUN SHE WOULD HAVE USED IT DURING THE LEWINSKY DAYS!!! =)
NICE TRY- I BELIVE THE PEOPLE FROM PA ARE NOT QUITE AS GULLIBLE OR AS STUPID AS THE CLINTON MACHINE IS HOPING. IF THEY ARE THEN THEY GET WHAT THEY DESERVE!
I HOPE AFTER SHE LOSES IN NORTH CAROLINA THAT THE SUPER DELEGATE DELUGE BEGINS AND PUTS THE NAIL IN HER COFFIN.
I KNOW LOTS OF "BITTER" NEW YORKERS WHO WILL VOTE REPUBLICAN IN THE NEXT SENATE RACE INSTEAD OF FOR HER.

ENOUGH ALREADY- LETS STOP THE BS AND START THE FIGHT AGAINST MCSAME!!!
Sen. Obama is the most in touch candidate!

From a middle class white person that is bitter, angry & frustrated with our government!

Obama '08
Now there is some straight talk you can take to the bank.
I agree that this is just one more pathetic attempt to turn voters away from the real issues and to hold on to hope that she'll get the nomination.  The huffington post has an article called Bill Clinton Flashback: "All these economically insecure white people...are scared to death."  Here's a paragraph from the article:

As the rumination continues over Barack Obama's comments about economically-depressed small town voters, statements made by Bill Clinton on the same topic -- uttered while he was running for president in 1991 -- have now surfaced.

"The reason (George H. W. Bush's tactic) works so well now is that you have all these economically insecure white people who are scared to death," Clinton was quoted saying by the Los Angeles Times in September 1991.

I was a Clinton fan in the 90s.  Now I just find this all just sad.
Poor Hillary, her campaign is so screwed that this complete non issue is their only remaining line of attack. The saddest thing about this is how the media is playing along with her and McCain's line instead of calling this what it is, a pathetic and cynical attempt by Obama's opponents to create an issue where none exists.

The best thing about this is that it shows just how amazingly out of touch both Clinton and McCain are. To imply that the American people are upbeat and optimistic about how things are going right now shows that they only American's the Clinton and McCain campaigns are really listening to is the top 1% who are currently doing just fine.
More MSNBC Probama spin!
Obama supporters will be dizzy for a month trying to spin this story.  They would have more success trying to put lipstick on a pig.
Everybody knows that obama was speaking the truth. Hillary and her new found friends, the republicans, might be happy with the current economic harship in the country, but I know for sure that majority of americans are not. Let them go ask people facing foreclosures whether they are bitter that they are about to lose their homes.
I think it's great that people understand that Obama does know what is going on and realize what he said was on target.
Obama knows of what he speaks. He is so bitter over his childhood he 'turned to his religion to express his frustration' and Rev Wright obliged. His statement is patronizing. How dare he remark on any people turning to their religion with his 20 year record. He statement means 'rural' America is so backwards they shun those not like them, turn to their guns and religion...only have the intelligence to 'vote wedge issues'. He was clearly talking down to ALL RURAL AMERICANS! Keep drinking the Kool Aid, he just trashed your mentality!
At last voices of truth. The Meet the Press gang this morning was so Clinton biased and did not say anything intelligent. Do they think the public is so stupid that they fall for this latest Clinton attack?
Well stated PA sportsmen!  Yes, we ARE bitter, bitter over falling wages, losing jobs to Billary's NAFTA policies, bitter that someone who allows a staffer who was secretly dealing with Columbia to push a new free trade agreement to still advise and take conference calls , allowing MORE jobs to leave, is telling us the man who just finished paying off his and his wife's college loan bills is an elitist!  How dare she.  Billary made $108 million dollars and she is calling someone who started working with steelworkers in Chicago who had nothing after the mills closed (lived there, watched it happen) an elitist!  She is a liar and an opportunist who is losing....desperate times require desparate measures..

Barack knows what we are going through..you Mrs. Cinton don't have a clue!!
This is right on the money.  I am a Philadelphia resident and I live in the "so called" big city.  I am very bitter with our government and dont believe in the system.  I was told a lie to go to war, I was told the oil would pay for it, i pay more for my healtcare, I have to decide food or gas to get to work at times and when these sentiments are expresses to our V.P. he says,"so"!!  I am 35 years old and this will be my 1st time ever voting.  Barack comes accross more as a regular person and less of a politician.  There were plenty of opportunities for Barack to take political cheap shots at Hillary for lying.  Instead, he simply gave Hillary and Bill the freedom to explain their lying.  There has been a Nafta screwup with their leading surrogate.  People were questioning her elitism based on 109$ million income after they left the White House.  Some income reported from special insterest.  This went on for the past 2 weeks and Obama didnt say a word.  The moment he says something truthful but inarticulate she and her co-partner(McCain) jump all over it.  She said McCain and her passed the "Commander and Chief threshold".  That is when i knew it is not about the party but about her.  She is know a gun totin, ruff anf tuff Crown Royal drinkin, chase it down with a mug walking chick.  Give me a freakin break.  This is coming from someone who used to love the Clintons.  She and her husband are classless people.  Before this campaign, I thought so highly them.  Boy was I fooled.
I'm in NC and I can't wait to vote for Senator Obama.  I was undecided until I heard this hissy fit over a simple word "bitter".  If the voters of PA and the remaining states will read the entire statement by Senator Obama, they will see that he is saying that he understands why people feel the way they do.  And yes, his statement is 100% true that small towns across this country have been abandoned by the Clinton and Bush administrations.  Both are leaving a mess in their wake.

Here's the entire statement:
"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not."

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

I was leaning towards Senator Clinton but her "misstatements" about Bosnia and trying to make political hay over this statement is shameless and it really does show what lengths people will go to get elected.

I am an African American female that was sincerly leaning towards Clinton but not now.  I want someone that is going to be sincere.  Senator Obama is as close as we'll come to someone who really understand the mess that we're in and will work hard to get "ALL" of us out of it.

I signed up this weekend to volunteer for his campaign.  Come on fellow voters ... this time it's about us.  Let's make it happen!

Angela in NC
Can't wait to vote on 5/6/08
Oh, yes, thank you for this. Tacky is the best that can be said of this opportunism and shameless it is.

It discredits the one who is doing it. On the level of heartlessness is one thing. But the poor judgment on display is even worse.
I am very disappointed in Senator Hillary Clinton, I was originally going to vote for her but her tactics to win at any cost necessary are shameless, which proves Obama statement to be true, we are in the "silly season of politics".

I met over 45 Obama supporters yesterday, this toppic was discussed.  Not one person was offended.  We all thought the same thing.... He was correct with the message, and even the wording was right on track.  It's the "other candidate supporters" that have a problem with this, because they can't handle the truth!
I is a shame when truth becomes a dirty word.

Senator Obama'a comments were right on the money.

I am "bitter", you want to know about what?

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/select.asp?cycle=2008

My vote is on Obama.

Just call me bitter, angry and frustrated in Houston, Texas.

Hillary Clinton's Real Feelings About Working Class Americans

Barack's point about small town America is right... that they are being devastated economically. It is the reason I no longer live in my hometown of Constantine, Michigan. There just are not enough high paying jobs, especially after the GM plants in Constantine and Three Rivers closed their doors.

I encourage everyone to take a drive through the country and stop in each downtown and count how many vacant store fronts there are. If you were not aware, you may be surprised. I have done this in Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Kansas and the result is the same and sad. Small town America is struggling and in many cases the once idelic small town scene (what most Americans see in their heads) has been replaced by boarded up store front windows, roads and sidewalks in disrepair and often a more sinister drug problem. The population sign at the town entrance is often a mis-statement as young people can not find work.

Hillary has been warned that her so called outrage about Obama's statements would come back to bite her and here it is:

From the Huffington Post:

Oh, noes! Would it crush anyone's beautiful velveteen pony to learn that Hillary Clinton hasn't always been a duck-hunting, beer-drankin', Senator-Saint who walked among the commoners and lived as they do? It's true, it's true, and apparently, there are witnesses!

Harvard University political scientist Theda Skocpol - also an elite, I guess! - provided Talking Points Memo with a following statement, which, in part, reads:

I have been in meetings with the Clintons and their advisors where very clinical things were said in a very-detached tone about unwillingness of working class voters to trust government -- and Bill Clinton -- and about their unfortunate (from a Clinton perspective) proclivity to vote on life-style rather than economic issues. To see Hillary going absolutely over the top to smash Obama for making clearly more humanly sympathetic observations in this vein, is just amazing. Even more so to see her pretending to be a gun-toting non-elite. Give us a break!...

This has to be one of the few times in U.S. political history when a multi-millionaire has accused a much less wealthy fellow public servant, a person of the same party and views who made much less lucrative career choices, of "elitism"! (I won't say the only time, because U.S. political history is full of absurdities of this sort.) In a way, it is funny -- and it may not be long before the jokes start.

Perhaps, however, it can be said that Pennsylvanians are not "bitter," at least, relative to their candidates.

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
I was born & raised in a western PA steel town -- 25 years ago when everyone's dad worked in the mills. Life was good, the neighborhoods were beautiful. Whenever I go home to visit my parents, I'm always saddened and shocked at what the town has become since the mills have closed. Many downtown shops are boarded up, formerly beautiful old architectural homes are now inhabited by druggies, and crime has skyrocketed. It's a very sad situation. I wish Jack Murtha would pull Hillary aside and tell her the truth: Life in steel-town Pennsylvania is not the rosy picture Clinton is trying to insist it is. What's more, she knows better. People are in real trouble. They're not as naive as Hillary's hoping they are. They're under no illusions that the steel industry is coming back. Yes, they're despondent -- and yes they're bitter.
This is what Hillary does best. She lies and divide. Her entire campaign is based on deceit and mistrust. She acts as if the voters are all too ignorant to see through her lies. Seems to me that any and everything Hillary says should be scruntinized before reporting. She needs to be held accountable for the many lies she tells on a daily basis.
Senator Obama's words have only been thrown out of context to those who are not paying attention. After her Bosnia lie, you would think that the voters have had enough of her. She doesn't care about people, nor can she relate to the average American worker or the umemployed. She only want the vote, that's all. After you've been fooled by her, things in Washington will be business as usual and the jobs will keep moving overseas. She supports NAFTA. After all, NAFTA is her husband's legacy.
I totally agree with the sportsmen. Thank God people can see this for what it is. Sen. Clinton will do anything to get votes.
The truth make the comfortable uncomfortable. So is Hillary and her spin doctors. The truth about small towns can't be overlooked, when there are no jobs to keep life going who wont be bitter. No! clinton you are out of touch with people, obama understands our frustration, he is the real politician who want get the job done
his lifetime democrat will be proudly voting Republican in November. I would never want this man as the President of my country. Inexperienced, elitest, and snobbish.

Good for  you, Leanna.  Go ahead and vote for McCain, then watch  Roe v. Wade get over-turned.  Women all over the country will thank you for that as you strip away their right to choose, and put their health in danger as we slip back to the "coat hanger" days... you elitist moron.

This is going to kill us in the General Election. Thanks Obama Supporters.  Arthur, Seattle Washington

To Arthur and all other so-called Democrats, and women who are voting for Hillary simply because she has a vagina... to all who keep barfing up the same irrational thought:  "This is ony going to kill us in the GE," Yes, it will IF "Democrats" decide to vote Republican out of spite.  Or if "Democrats" don't get off their butts and vote D in the GE.

Get Real.  It's only going to hurt us in the GE if we LET it hurt us.

this is a desperate attempt from the clinton campaign. she is resorting to personal attacks just to keep herself alive out there. pathetic and a very republican move. i just hope everyone sees her for who she really is. she will do anything to get elected even if it means tearing the democratic party apart.
HELLOO ALL BLOGERS: As I sit'and read what each of you have to say.I am reminded of what You all Said you wonted,The change in status quo'in Government. It looks like You have ALL taken the bait,You have excepted, the poor choice's given to you.We the People'Are seposed to,Make those changes."STAY HOME" on Election day.
I wonder what the DEMS think of Hillary dissing Kerry and Gore. These were two highly educated and capable candidates, but Hillary looks at them as elitists? She might as well replaced elitist for liberal with comments like that.  If she no longer has confidence in the Democratic Party, she can gladly leave.
Another great article from the Pro Obama Network "AKA MSNBC"

Wake up guys, he's going down in flames come November
The Clinton's and their surrogates have assured that the  next President will be a Republican, if Obama does not win the nomination.  Even if he does win they have made it almost impossible for him to win.  I will never vote for a Clinton again.
I find sad that the understanding level of people is so limited that they cannot grasp simple concepts, but view things from the most negative and misinformed vantage point available.

Go Obama
Whether Republican or Democrat, it may be instructive to remember that the majority of the US Supreme Court justices have been appointed by Reagan, Bush I and Bush II. That configuration is the most lasting legacy of any President. The flap over Obama's choice of words and Clinton's pandering to those wishing for no limits on weapons ownership risk not seeing the forest for the trees. As for elitism, would you prefer an intellectual in the White House or an opportunistic politician?
She needs to go to see a doctor and she is very tired of running this race for presidency. I always like Hillary as frist lady and she needs to lesson to God's calling to enjoy as frist lady title. Please Hillary and let's Obama to bid John Mcsame. We don't want to loss an other election to the GOP!!
And Obama cruises on.  At the end of the day the light will shine!
Pennsylvanians,

I understand its been a long time since you folks had good jobs; more than fifteen years.  Do any of you think that maybe since McCain and Hillary have been in Washington for this entire period of time, a little help could have been sent your way instead of across the sea or across the border?

If you reject Barack, what will you end up with?  Why would Hillary or McCain feel a need to do anything differently for your communities or any community?  Hillary thinks no one is bitter and are all happy-go-lucky and poor old John McCain, well, bless his heart.
Hope is making a come back.  Simple question people gonna ask themselves is how much lies they can continue to sustain from their leaders like bush and consume 7years while they are making fortune and leaving trusts for their kids for generations while our kids are coming back wounded.  I am bitter and Obama gets it!
