Obama: 'Shame on her!'

Posted: Sunday, April 13, 2008 10:04 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan and NBC's Mark Murray
At a United Steel Workers union hall tonight, filled with steel workers, Obama launched on his own "shame on you" tirade against Clinton, for hitting him hard and repeatedly on his comments that small town Pennsylvanians "cling to guns," and religion and anti-immigrant sentiment because government hasn't served them.

Clinton, who over the past two days has touted her family's roots in Scranton, PA as working class and church-going, has also portrayed herself as a defender of the 2nd Amendment. Tonight, Obama questioned her commitment, saying that her espousal of the issue was politics at work and said she was trying to appear like "Annie Oakley."

"Now, I have to admit that I expected some of this out of John McCain. John McCain said I was out of touch, he said I was being condescending and elitist, 'people aren't bitter.' And I'm thinking to myself, 'Here's a guy, it took him three tries before he actually came up with a plan to deal with the millions of people who are about to lose their homes because of foreclosure, who wants to perpetuate the Bush tax cuts."

"And he's saying I'm out of touch. Do you think I'm out of touch or do you think he's out of touch?! So I expected this out of John McCain. But I've gotta say, I'm a little disappointed when I start hearing the exact same talking points coming out of my Democratic colleague Hillary Clinton. She knows better. She knows better! Shame on her! Shame on her! She knows better!"

"She's running around talking about how this is an insult to sportsmen, how she values the 2nd Amendment, she's talkin like she's Annie Oakley! Hillary Clinton's out there like she's on the duck blind every Sunday. She's packin' a six shooter! C'mon!  She knows better. That's some politics being played by Hillary Clinton! I want to see that picture of her out there in the duck blinds. Haha. Ya know, c'mon. When Hillary Clinton says I'm out of touch I just have to remind people of the track record."

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer responded with this statement: "For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton's character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s. The shame is his. Sen. Clinton does know better -- she knows better than to condescend and talk down to voters like Senator Obama did."

"Senator Obama’s outburst won't change the fact that he has embraced his characterization of the millions of Americans who live in small towns," he added.

I feel that she just loves jump on whatever he says because thats all she has. She cant win so why not twist and turn to try to squeeze some more people who are gullible to turn to her. If you feel like your bitter because we've been let down by our government please post your thoughts on my blog www.mammademocrat.blogspot.com. Lets show Clinton we aren't going to take it anymore!!!
Will people finally see the Clintons...yes Clintons,
for their unapologetic crusade to regain the
White House for themselves with no thought to the American people?  Will she say or do anything to Barack Obama??
You know something?  People do not CARE what spin either of the campaigns give to this.  Anyone with an ounce of brains understands what Sen. Obama was saying and those with intellectual honesty will admit that what he said is more true than not.

This nonsense is making me weary.  HRC is not going to be the Dem nominee and she and her campaign need to suck it up.
Will somebody please tell both Hillary Clinton and John McCain that Barack Obama is just plain telling the truth--that a lot of us out here actually are bitter?
Barach has made hay with his, "I feel your pain and it's all the fault of the special interest groups and people in Washington...." routine so it is natural that he played that card here.

What Barach does not grasp is the cultural and work ethic of rural and small town America.  Look at the absenteism that occurs in urban areas and compare it to rural settings.  Look at turn over rates in small town businesses.

Bitterness is the emotion of the guy that blames the world for his misfortune....unfulfilled expectations.  I think you'll find that small town and rural America has not hitched its expectations to the government for a very long time.  Might even explain why rural usually goes republican.
Shame on you Obama!!!  Don't try to turn you bad judgment toward Hillary.  You are the words expert that said them and you meant them just like you said them.  You were playing to your billionaire friends try to be the "big shot" and talking down to the very people you are asking to vote for you.  You and Michlle present yourselves with an air of superiority. You are extremely arrogant, your are snooty and I won't use the e word but you are.  Shame, shame on Obama.
1) We spend more time covering bowling ability than the issue of national health care.
2) While his words were clinky, what Obama actually said was correct...people do not think anyone in DC is listening to them, and the politicians are using issues like guns and religion as deflectors to addressing the real issues.
3) Hillary is an out and out liar, i don't think she does it intentionally, i think she just says whatever she thinks the people want to hear, and the truth be damned.
4) Obama is not as experienced at the evil and twisted and completely     non-constructive political game that has become this farce of an election.
5) Nobody is discussing the issues.
6) Who do  you think is running because they actually want to do some good vs. fulfill a slot on their resume or lifelong ambition?
7) Obama is not a muslim
8) The fact that it is necessary for candidates to appear at a forum to discuss THEIR religion as a right of passage and approval to the white house is pathetic.
9) I am a practicing catholic, I am NOT supporting Clinton or Obama or McCain, I live in western PA.

I am finally at the point where the CLinton campain is starting to piss me off. This is all so baseless!!! And why the media continues to push these non stories is past me. Shame on Hillary Clinton and her campain and Shame on the media for giving these stories legs. Democrats wake the heck up. You need to be focusing on the republicans. Not each other. Every day you all give John McSame a half point increase in his poll numbers. I cannot and will not tollerate 4 more years of the Bush/Macain doctrine. My family cannot afford it.
The Clinton camp's response doesn't even make any sense.  Republican talking points from the 90s?  I remember those anti-Clinton talking points well, and Obama's kept them where they belong -- off the table.

She's flip out if he actually brought the 90s Clinton ammunition to bear...
No one has to attack her character....she
defines herself.  Last week she was ROCKY
Then she was PAULETTE REVERE....for months she
was dodging sniper fire.
Why not add Annie Oakley to the list?
Every week she has a new personality she tried
out on the crowd.
The one she seems to play the best is victim.
She should probably stick to that one.
SPIN only works when you don't know it's being
done.
Lately people respond to Clinton only after they
get the REST OF THE STORY..as Paul Harvey used
to say.
If you feel bitter too visit my blog and tell Hillary how you really feel.www.mammademocrat.blogspot.com
You haven't given your First Read on the Compassion Forum held after Obama spoke to that Union about Annie Oakley.  When you do, I hope you do better than the Associated Press did.  Religion and Compassion are not trivial issues, ill suited to being reduced to sound bites.  Perhaps the gentle AP reporter was under the gun to get a scoop.  If not, the gentle reporter should be taken off the religion beat and redirected to something else.  There was much more the forum than whether or not the most recent religious flap on the trail was addressed to the reporter's satisfaction.  The responses of the two candidates shed light on the personality, character, and politics of each.  I thought one of the candidates framed answers to score political points more than the other did.  I won't name names, though.  I will let you figure that out for yourself.
this is the best piece of political theatre that I have ever seen. Boy, did he eat up Hillary Clinton.
the more important point however is the republicans better start taking this guy seriously. He is the best counter puncher in politics and you never see it coming. He waited for Hillary Clinton and her husband to overreach as they tend to do, and then he hit her.
tomorrow this is going to be all over Pennsylvania and the MSM. And the beauty of his strategy is that Bill and Hillary won't realize how beat them, so they will continue, like Bosnia, not leave well enough alone.
In a tough hard scrabble state like Pennsylvania Obama's Annie Oakley crack and pictures of Hillary in the duck blind (I can imagine the cartoons coming) will give all those "white class" voters a real laugh. And to deliver it in a steelworkers hall (and bring the house down) is only cream for Obama.

Don't we have a tank around here that Hillary can drive?
At least when Obama says he misspoke it is about an issue he believes in.  When Hilary said she misspoke it was because she got cought telling lies about landing in Bosnia.

The wise see Obama's integrity. The foolish want to believe in Hilary's lies.
shame on you Obama! you look down at the working class Aamerican.
HRC is the epitome of arrogance and elitism:  Stating that only "big states" matter most, claiming herself as the inevitable candidate, and last but not least, her wealth and income. Carl Bernstein has a very insightful view of what a third Clinton term would look like.

http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/04/12/carl-bernstein-what-a-hillary-clinton-presidency-look-like/

Obama is offensive to damage control. He made a huge mistake. Indeed his tone was very disturbing and once again shine on his lack of understanding and compassion for average Americans.

Hillary 08! :)
Shame on you Obama!!!  Don't try to turn you bad judgment toward Hillary.  You are the words expert that said them and you meant them just like you said them.  You were playing to your billionaire friends trying  to be the "big shot" and talking down to the very people you are asking to vote for you.  You and Michlle present yourselves with an air of superiority. You are extremely arrogant, your are snooty and I won't use the e word but you are.  Shame, shame on Obama.
OBAMA says "[SMALL-TOWN AMERICANS] get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations,"

First substitute BUSH, MCCAIN or CLINTON for OBAMA.

Next substitute "BLACK AMERICANS," or "JEWISH AMERICANS" or "WOMEN" for "SMALL-TOWN AMERICANS."

Finally, defend it as non-prejudicial. -As not bourgeoisie condescension observing the opiates of the masses. -And the opiates he ascribes them: Guns, Religion, Hate, Fear.

This ideology is dangerous problematic.

This is harmful to the Democratic Party.

This is helpful to the Republican Party.

Anyone who turns a blind eye to this perpetuates the harm.
Clinton spokesman Phil Singer responded with this statement: "For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton's character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s

After spitting out my drink and laughing so hard I couldn't see straight, I had to read this statement from this person who must have doing 20 times the shots that Hillary did at the bar the other night.
You would expect something like that from the Clinton's, they act as if they are the only people in their own little world.  Bad enough they were caught lying and doing things that have escaped an investigation by law enforcement, but the statement above shows how much they are out of the loop with the American people
Obama is a farce.
At the start of this campaign I was 100% a Barack Obama supporter.  That is why I can't believe that he has turned into this.  Barack Obama, I have come to realize, is no different than anything we have seen in politics in the history of this country.  The man is a hypocrite.  He says "shame on her" and then goes on to bash her....he contradicts himself in the same speech!  He says that he's a candidate for all the people...not just for the delegates "like Hillary." (unless a state has no delegates to offer him, like Michigan, then he'll pull his name off the ballot).  He claims that superdelegates MUST support the will of the people in their states (unless Hillary wins New Mexico and Mass. and Bill Richardson and John Kerry want to throw a vote his way).  He claims that campaign workers do not represent his beliefs (Powers and Wright) but he claims that Hillary's campaign workers represent hers (Penn).  It's contradiction after contradiction after contradiction.

I am disappointed in the campaign that he has run.  He is trying to become President of the United States of America. His campaign has not offered the American people anything but vague "hope for change."  What substance is there in what he says now?  I see him up there talking like a comedian, trying to get a few laughs at Hillary's expense more than trying to convince me that he is the candidate capable of improving this country in the next four years.

Honestly, I think John McCain represents Obama's message better than he himself does.  McCain has run a very positive campaign from the start and he is a very admirable human being.  McCain is a candidate who actually HAS worked across the isle in Congress (why do you think so many staunch conservatives despise him?) He's not the "most liberal" senator in Congress (like Obama is).

If Clinton manages to make the American people realize the false representation that Obama has given us, I may still vote for her in a general election scenario, but the way things are going now...it looks like as a young person who considers myself liberal...I'm rooting for McCain '08.
well tonight on the cnn debate he said he called the people those  things gun toteing bible thumping bitter people and he said that was good we are like that. he said he was not smart enough to have used better words to call us . well i dont think he is smart enough to be our leader either  and if we were those things whitch we are not that in no way would be good
Bravo! Obama you still got that smooth talking skill that ironically was cultivated from the slick willie era of politics. Lets face it people Obama has shown he has learned from the best and is the best pick for the nomination and the general election in 08.
Sen. Obama is in touch! He is correct, we can feel bitter and frustrated and even feel betrayed by our government, so yes we at times do cling to what we know or feel more secure with!
Hillary is OUT of touch and she is dividing the democratic party even further!
"Shame on you Hillary"

Obama '08
Hillary Clinton has already lost the battle for the nomination.  Now she is just trying to wound Obama so that she could conceivably come back and try four years later.  She will say anything and do anything.  She and her husband were avid gun control.  She campaigned hard for NAFTA; and she really thinks that we are all too stupid to remember. I suppose she shoots a gun as well as she runs away from sniper fire.
It is amazing to me that Mrs. Clinton whom over a year ago thought she would be literally handed over the democratic nomination and has had so much trouble running a campaign. Is running around saying she is the most electable. Below are some reasons why. Please feel free to pass along these thoughts and ideas to those that you think  you need to.

1. By the fact that her opponent has taken the high road and chosen not to attack her as frequently as he could is clear indication as to why she is less electable. But let’s explore some other way she is less electable that no one is talking about.

If you can't run an effective campaign how can you run a country?

2. As far as the campaign goes she has had to fire multiple key staffers and retool her image, her message and herself at least a dozen times. Once again, if you can't run an effective campaign how can you run a country?

3. How do you let some who is as unknown as Barrack Obama come into a race that you were supposed to win hands down and beat you by delivering a more effective message?

4. So what are we too expect when things get hard as a president you will come on and address the nation and cry that you are not being treated correctly by the press or by other countries.

There a reason why the press coverage is the way it is. Since you thought you were entitled to this and were proven wrong you don't know ho to react.

5. The fact that you have to criticize and minimize everything your opponent has done correctly. He has done everything that you could not do. Your only chance to win is by going negative. What type of message does that send to the American people?

6. You are willing to "LIE" to get the job.  The news media and your husband can sugar coat it if they want to but a "LIE" is a "LIE" no matter how you slice it.

7. She and her husband made over a hundred millions dollars profiting from his time in the White House and she wants us to believe that someone else is out of the touch with the people of America.

8. ONCE AGAIN HILLARY IF YOU CAN’T RUN AN EFFECTIVE CAMPAIGN! HOW CAN YOU RUN THE COUNTRY?

There is truly nothing more demeaning than Hillary fabricating sniper fire as a way to manipulate voters.  She should be a bit more reserved about calling people on what they say.
Good grief, Clinton acts desperate for some of the mud to stick. But really, Obama's remarks seemed to me to show sympathy and empathy for the plight of small town Pennsylvanians. We have many relatives there. The economic situation is pretty bleak since steel virtually disappeared, and the suicide rate in the Oil City area where our relatives are is very high.
I agree, Hillary is a loser, and can't stand to win.  The only one who will believer her are rednecks and republicans.
Obama, I'll be so proud to have you represent me! And it's clear Hillary is trying to turn this into an issue for herself- I'm glad you called her up on it. Obama 08!
I mean seriously. How can a woman who for the last 20 years has lived rent free first in Arkansas governors's mansion, then the white house, and now she is living the rest of her life on a federal presidential pension where everything is paid for, even her million dollar a year phone bill is paid for by us taxpayers, calling somebody who only last year paid off his student loan an elitist? I guess we're supposed to believe stupid enough to believe anything she says...
So let me get this straight. Clinton calls Obama an elitist and then whines the he's using RNC talking points?
Hillary has become just another McCain surrogate.  They've agreed on war in Iraq, granting Bush the authority to go to war w/ Iran, NAFTA, CAFTA, legislation favoring credit card companies at the expense of ordinary, middle-class Americans -- maybe Hillary is pushing to be McCain's running mate.  She's clearly not a Democrat, though she pretends to be.  I wonder if McCain will choose Hillary or Mitt Romney!
So how does the Clinton campaign respond?
whining about Obama being mean.  Oh poor Hillary.
Well said Obama--Its about time.
That's a shame for journalists to keep on fuelling that so called controversy when they could immediately challenge the Clintons.  I'm sending this to as many sites as possible. Charlie should be ashamed to not coming forward to denounce it. That what is a great about the MSM. It's all about self-censured. Otherwise it's no better than a country like Russia.

The real conversation about bitter America with Charlie Rose

And How Bill Clinton has said the same thing even more humiliating (this one is already on Huffington:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/13/bill-clinton-flashback-al_n_96433.html
I thought Obama was supposed to be eloquent and uplifting. What he needs to do is learn when to stop digging the hole deeper than it already is. As one of those "bitter," "religious" members of small-town USA, he's certainly not winning over my vote.
Since it's the first post, I'm almost positive that you won't publish it
Please, print the rest of what he said. Continue with his comments on her track record. For months msnbc commentators have been wondering aloud if Obama has stamina to withstand attacks and fire back or if he will end up like Kerry and allow himself to be swiftboated. You do your readers/viewers a disservice if you only tell part of the story or print something out of context. His comments on her track record were the most important part of that exchange and you chosse to leave them out. Please do your job and report the whole thing.
In regards to the articles quote as follows:
--------------
"Clinton spokesman Phil Singer responded with this statement: "For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton's character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s. The shame is his. Sen. Clinton does know better -- she knows better than to condescend and talk down to voters like Senator Obama did."
---------------

First, I just want to say that not only does reading this drivel from Clinton's campaign give me a headache, it makes me want to reach for the Crown Royal.

Next, who is the one relentlessly attacking the last few months?

Hillary....

Who is the one using Republican talking points and rhetoric (and no lady, you have enough current issues to where no one needs to bring up the 1990's)?

Hillary....

Who is the one that panders, condescends and talks down to the voters (and stiffs them on their bills for added emphasis)?

Hillary....

Please, take whatever shreds of dignity you may have left and enjoy a prosperous career in the Senate if the New Yorkers will still have you after all this.
From Daily Kos a quote from another elitist!!!!

Will Barack Obama Earn the Endorsement of This Elitist?

The politics of the Karl Rove era were designed to distract and divide the very people who would ordinarily be rebelling against the deterioration of their way of life. Working Americans have been repeatedly seduced at the polls by emotional issues such as the predictable mantra of "God, guns, gays, abortion and the flag" while their way of life shifted ineluctably beneath their feet.

Who wrote that 2006 op-ed, you may be wondering?  Well, none other than well-known elitist, superdelgate, and Democratic Senator from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Jim Webb.

Readers, I need your assistance.  Please direct me to some examples of Bill and Hillary Clinton accusing Jim Webb of elitism.  And please alert me to the impending charges that Obama plagiarized Webb.

[h/t to SusanG for pointing me to this article; follow the link and read the whole
The Clintons are now acting VERY desperate and I believe the people of PA will see right through her schemes and lies.  After all, her daughter, her husband and he are all on record for lying, most recently about bullets over Bosnia.

The Clintons are going to be surprised when they find that the people of PA are not as dumb as she hopes or that she is making them look.

Hillary shown lying to us about Bosnia (as there was no reason I expect this is pathological lying):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FfWIjv13XX0

And here is the daughter covering up by lying as well:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GEB2P8DNE08

Then Bill covers with even MORE lies:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BGvcUunQPzg

WOW!  How could ANYONE with a brain vote for these pathological liars.  They are counting on people being total fools and it's them who will be surprised.
People ARE bitter and angry. I think Obama gets punished every time he speaks the truth.  Guns and faith are important to certain sections of the population, and when they have lost everything else, they turn to what they have.. I really don't understand what this whole uproar is about. The media, especially CNN and Fox News, is stoking this current "controversy". We must be terribly ignorant, or immature  as a nation, if we cannot differentiate between reality, and the lies spoken by the likes of  Bush, Cheney, and the Clintons.  Look at what is happening to our country. People are losing jobs, homes, and are fighting the rising cost of gas and food, health care and essential items.  The war in Iraq, which should never have taken place, seems to be going on for ever and ever. Bitterness  exists, not only in the small towns but also in the big cities, and if we don't change things now,  I am afraid our nation will end up in chaos. Obama has been touring the small towns  and is keeping a finger on the pulse of those people.
Clinton is the one who does not understand the true state of our country. She is desperate and is using GOP tactics in attacking Barack. We need to question her loyalty to the Democratic party. Ever since she lost Super Tuesday, she has shown her true nature. I used to be very supportive of the Clintons. But she lost my vote a long time ago.  She is the one who should apologize to the people in the small towns, for her support of the war, NAFTA, and for her lies about her foreign endeavors!
Wait.  Let me get this straight.  The Clinton campaign says that the Obama campaign RELENTLESSLY attacked CLINTON'S character and is using Republican talking points.

I think Phil Singer is practicing HIS talking points in case he needs a job in the Obama campaign.  Who's been relentless.  All we've heard from HRC this weekend is a stream of attacks on Barack Obama's "bitter" comment and in such a Rovenesque manner.  Clinton is switching parties before our very eyes.

Then on CNN tonight, she stated that Kerry and Gore appeared out of touch during their campaigns and that's why the voters didn't vote for them.  She's dissing GORE NOW?

I think Hillary's bucking to be McCain's VP, as she's facing the reality that the Democrats don't want her.

On the bright side, a new Web site sprung up this weekend.  Bitter voters for Obama.  It's pretty funny:
http://www.bittervoters.org/
Its about time Obama got off the fence, and defended himself against the relentless Clinton attacks. She is the easiest candidate in the world to hit with her endless exaggerations of her experience, not mention she's an out-right liar on so many levels. She is also the most divisive national political figure in the country. Note: The Clinton campaign will now say that Obama isn't keeping his word, because he has stopped being a punching bag and is pushing back, not punching back. Obama won't continue his offense which I think is wrong. You can't always take the high road alone.
PROTEST AGAINST BIASED MEDIA

From the very start, the media has given Clinton a free pass in this election process.
1. The media has ignored the story of long time Hillary Clinton friend, financial supporter and a member of the Clinton Campaign’s “Hill Raisers” Mehmet Celebi.
Mr. Celebi is a Muslim movie producer who has the distinction of producing one of the most hostile anti-American and Anti-Semitic films made in Turkey "Valley of the Wolves-Irak"
Mr. Celebi is a Hillary Clinton mega-donor and bundler and was appointed a delegate by Hillary Clinton to the Democratic National Convention.  Until recently, Clinton’s campaign web site identified Mr. Celebi as a “Hill Raiser” a designation for those who have raised at least $100,000 for Clinton’s presidential campaign.
2. The case of Ron Paul vs. William Jefferson Clinton.

3. The Bosnia fairy tale…oops The Bosnia LIE.

4. Her comments in her first book regarding NAFTA.

5. Her husband’s business partners.

6. The role of Mark Penn in her campaign.

7. The Clintons’ refusal to disclose the list of donors to the Clinton Presidential Library.

We have to stop the trend.

On April 25, 2008 at 8:30 a.m. there will a scheduled court hearing in the case of PAUL vs. CLINTON, et. al. (Case NO: BC304174). A.K.A: Hillary’s FRAUD trial.

I am sure the media will once again not cover the hearing.

Me and my friends will gather in front of the Courthouse and march to the L.A. Times building 2 blocks away to call attention to the media’s refusal to cover this legitimate issue.

We are not sophisticated, however, we will issue a press release, have produced thousand of flyers and signs.

If you can, join us at 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles CA on APRIL 25!!!

For info e-mail me at lacards@aol.com

Sorry we do not have a web site, but if anyone wants to help please feel free.

JOIN US!!!! This double standard must be stopped.

Help spread the word.

If you cannot make it to Los Angeles. Then write your local newspaper and ask them to report on the story.

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer responded with this statement: "For months, Barack Obama and his campaign have relentlessly attacked Hillary Clinton's character and integrity by using Republican talking points from the 1990s.

Remarkable statement from HRC's attack machine. They continue to divide the Democratic party with pathetically deperate attacks and convenient distortions despite virtually no chance of savinga sinking ship. And now HRC claims to be a gun toting sportsperson? Wow! I suppose we shouldn't be surprised if next she claims to have climed Everest. This is one of the most unreliable, phony and desperate candidates I've ever seen.

Come on now Hillary, show us your guns!

Putting it in words doset do it justice.
Go to the huffingtonpost and see for yourself. I hope msnbc accually plays video.
