Clinton: A harder edge?

Posted: Monday, April 14, 2008 9:06 AM by Domenico Montanaro

At the Alliance for American Manufacturing forum in Pittsburgh, Clinton will say, according to excerpts of her speech, per AP, "We need solutions to fix our trade laws, build a strong manufacturing base, and stand up to China and say that unsafe toys and unfair currency practices are unacceptable." Obama is also scheduled to speak at the event today as well.

Boston Globe looks at the problem Clinton has had softening her public persona. "Collegial and quietly diligent, Clinton could be counted on to exhaustively work a bill through and cultivate support from both parties, according to numerous senators and aides interviewed by the Globe. This was, some say, the new Clinton that her presidential campaign wanted to reintroduce to voters - the Clinton who once described herself as ‘the most famous person nobody knows.’”

“Fifteen months later, however, even some Clinton supporters concede that goal has been more difficult to achieve in the one-on-one campaign against Barack Obama, in which Clinton chose after her loss in the Iowa caucuses to define herself as a relentless fighter. That harder-edged persona - intended to present her as tougher than Obama - has won her greater support among some elements of the electorate, especially blue-collar voters, pollsters say. But it has also come at a cost, as Clinton continues to be hamstrung by public impressions of her as divisive and untrustworthy.”

“Clinton's supporters say she is the victim of old, unfair images that are reinforced in the media. But some political specialists and lawmakers say the tone of Clinton's uphill campaign against Obama has underscored the side of the Clintons that some voters do not like."

Exactly (and I'm referring to the last paragraph).  She has come across without a consistent persona.  She seems to be a creature of politics for the last 20-odd years.  It all seems contrived.  Its ironic as she seems to indicate that we don't know Obama (since he hasn't been around).  What does it say about her that we don't feel that we really know who she is even though she HAS been around.

I am beginning to believe the bubble talk...(she has been living in a bubble).  Just how long has she been running for office or in office or in some form of public life.  How can she possibly really know us in the real world as she hasn't lived it.  Talking to people about it is different.  It is similar to the difference between a quick visit to a foreign country or different State and actually living there.

What could you possibly judge her character on but for her recent campaign tactics...as we don't really know Hillary.

Obama 08
The reason that this "softening" of her public personna"
hasn't worked is that is not who she really is.  Senator Clinton has demonstrated many problems with truth, becomes shrill when she is not getting what she thinks we owe her, and has run one of the worst campaigns in history.  Voters are smart enough to suss that out.

And while we are on the subject of personalities, Joe Scarborough is now and will always remain, the biggest idiot given a show on television.  I can watch about two minutes of it, and move on.  Surely, there is someone of some intelligence that could do a better job.  Would you please start looking?  The only good thing is that Don Imus is on RFD is so much better.
Oh can it FR. " the side of the Clintons that some voters do not like."
The Clinton's are not candidates for the presidency!??
ONLY SENATOR CLINTON IS THE CANDIDATE!
SOME people?? SOME people??
So your venom bloggers are happy with this report to get the frenzy going  today.
You are masters of sleaze!
You make her is the victim of old, unfair images that are reinforced here and now and always.
Hillary has all the right in the world to question Obama.   When Obama spewed his condescending remarks to all those millionaires in San Francisco he directly accused the Clinton administration for "small town folks" clinging to religion and guns.  If  he accuses the Clinton years as the reason for their bitterness then why shouldn’t Hillary strike back?  WHY?  She kept quiet when the Wright controversy erupted.  She made only one comment. "Wright would not be my pastor."  That was it.  But this "bitter/clinging" issue is pure politics, it’s about policy, honesty.  Its goes straight to the reason why democrats have lost the last two elections.  It is fair to argue Obama’s condescension to the small town folk because it goes directly to issues like religion, xenophobia, gun ownership and culture.

She certainly does not come across as Presidential. Her scrappiness would be an asset, if she were fighting for us, instead of being tenacious to a fault because of her selfish ambition.

Barack's ambition is not devoid of concern for us. That is why he tells us what we don't want to hear sometimes.

Hillary couldn't have run a worse campaign. It just reflects the intellectual deficiencies of the people running the operation.
How can Hillary speak out against the Chinese when she and bill are lining their pockets with Chinese money:

NEW YORK -- As Chinese authorities have clamped down on unrest in Tibet and jailed dissidents in advance of the 2008 Olympics, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has taken a strong public stance, calling for restraint in Tibet and urging President Bush to boycott the Olympics opening ceremonies in Beijing.

But her recent stern comments on China's internal crackdown collide with former President Bill Clinton's fundraising relationship with a Chinese Internet company accused of collaborating with the mainland government's censorship of the Web. Last month, the firm, Alibaba Inc., carried a government-issued "most wanted" posting on its Yahoo China homepage, urging viewers to provide information on Tibetan activists suspected of stirring recent riots.

Instead of taking Bill Clinton’s standard speaking fees, which range from $100,000 to $400,000, Clinton accepted an "unspecified private donation" from Alibaba to his "international charity, the William J. Clinton Foundation."

Bill Clinton’s charity has raised more than $500 million over the last decade. But his reliance on influential foreign donors and his foundation's refusal to release its list of donors have led to repeated questions about the sources and transparency of his fundraising -- even as Hillary Clinton has talked on the campaign trail about relying on him as a roving international ambassador if she is elected president.

The Clinton foundation and the former president's library in Little Rock have received millions of dollars in donations from the Saudi royal family and the Middle East sheikdoms of the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar, along with the governments of Taiwan and Brunei.
Hillary not only has a harder edge but she has a big credibility problem. She spins tall tales around imaginary sniper fire and then starts frothing at the mouth over one clumsily crafted but sincere comment by Obama.  Then she starts telling tales about her duckhunting days as a child and knocking back shots of whiskey!! Who is patronizing the voters of Pennsylvania? Thanks to 24 hours news they can't be played like they once were. Hillary Clinton is about as genuine as her husband is honest and her credibility takes another hit. She looks desperate and it is time to go. Please just go away.
She has hurt Obama, no question about it, but at great personal cost to herself, and she cannot afford that, because her negatives were too high anyway.  The softer approach would work better and make her seem warmer, more approachable.
After all this bittergate talk from MSNBC - why aren't you showing Senator Obama's response - including the ANNIE OAKLEY clip?

EQUAL TIME --- I mean I know you want to keep this campaign going and going - but if everyone saw Senator Obama's response last night it would be over now.  HMMM - maybe that's why MSNBC is not showing it....
Harden.  Soften.  change.  Experience.
It does not matter.  The issue is not the message but the messenger.
I would like to know has anyone else seen that in his rich(oil billionair)friends home when he thought no one would hear he is saying one thing about the trade deals that are completely different than what he tells on the stump? It reminds me of his Director telling Canadian people not to listen cause it is only political speech Obama giveing on stump. He thought no one would hear both times. Why would he include this in Bitter speech to his money men?Is he promising, like he did to Canada, he doesnt mean what he tells us ??I am thinking maybe another look before I can go Obama. He cannt be trusted.I dont like th eway he slams Hillary. I think I will support her now.
A Mrs. Clinton softer persona is a mask.  Underneath this softer persona mask is same old same old hard core Hillary Clinton.  People...don't be confused...Mrs. Clinton will say anything to win.

Mr. Obama is the only candidate being truthful.  The only way to get change is to say you are mad as hell and you are not going take it anymore.  BITTER IS BETTER.
Speaking of hard edge... Hillary's show off moment with drinking crown Royal chased down with beer, surrounded by men, makes her look like a whore or a dike. Take your pick, either one will do.
First you have to have a persona, unless the one that she has is what it is.The most deciving, lieing, cold hearted,defensive.un-likable,can't belive a wordl the hillbillys say,Today the word out is that slick willie has lobbyist ties to China,is there a story under the surface, while hill is out making statements denoncing China willie is filling the coffers, sounds like Colombina gate now China gate.Who will it be tommorow?
I agree with you sotriedofignorance.  Joe Scarborough has turned me completely off.  I don't even watch his show in the morning anymore.  He is always trying to make Obama look bad, and make Hillary look like an "Angel".  I know he is a republician, but he needs to be more neutral when speaking about Obama, he might just be our next president.  Hillary is a liar, and for her to call Obama an "Elitist" make me like her even more.  She and Bill are the ones who made $109 million last year.  John McCain is out of touch with the Middle Class, because he didn't even want people saying the government should help them.  He say it not the government who should bell you out, because you made a bad decision.  I am a middle class women white voting for Obama on 4-22-08 in PN.
