'Bitter' Sweet Symphony, Day 4

Posted: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 9:19 AM by Mark Murray

Obama told the Philly Inquirer that people find stability in their traditions and are vulnerable to politicians exploiting wedge issues. “‘As a wise old woman who was talking to me the other day said, “You misspoke, but you didn’t lie,”’” he said.”

The Washington Post checks in with two undecided superdelegates to get their reaction to Obama's comments. “Looking for any possible edge, the Clinton campaign has pressed uncommitted superdelegates to view Obama's remarks as a major debacle that could harm him in November. But as of yesterday evening, there was little evidence that the electability argument is resonating. “Rep. Mike Doyle (D), an undecided superdelegate who represents Pittsburgh and surrounding towns in the Monongahela Valley, said yesterday that he was not particularly troubled by Obama's comments. ‘I don't disagree with a lot of what he said. My dad was a mill worker. My grandfather was a steel mill worker, and when the steel industry collapsed, nobody's family was hurt more than mine,’ Doyle said. ‘It's not inaccurate to say a lot of politicians have come through these towns, made a lot of promises and failed to deliver. I thought he was spot-on when he said how people feel.’”

“He added that Obama's unexpected endorsement yesterday by Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney ‘carries a hell of a lot more weight’ than the blowup over his comments about small-town residents. Rep. David E. Price, an uncommitted Democrat from North Carolina, which holds its primary May 6, said his frustrations are with Clinton, for the potential damage she has inflicted. ‘Senator Obama could have chosen better words, but it seems to me that he's stating the obvious,’ Price said. ‘People are feeling a great deal of economic stress, anxiety, and there is a certain amount of anger out there… I think it's most unfortunate that opponents simply pounce, particularly opponents in his own party.’”

The LA Times: "Obama … struck back at his rivals Monday by saying that voters were tired of politicians who fanned ‘fake controversies" for their own advantage.’” More: "Obama said Monday that he would ‘never walk away from the larger point’ he was trying to make.”

“Obama argued that politicians had fostered a legacy of cynicism by continually pledging to address what he called ‘the downside of globalization’ and then going back to Washington to fight ‘over the latest distraction of the week.’”

The Boston Globe notes the irony in Obama getting caught up in the “elitist” controversy. “The irony of Obama playing into those very suspicions is that he often argues forcefully that the Democratic Party must broaden its appeal ideologically and expand its base of support beyond the coasts to build a ‘governing majority’ and bring true change to the country. Obama, who wants to prove in Pennsylvania he can draw working-class votes key to winning swing states in November, often cites his primary and caucus wins in rural red states as proof he can lead the party in that direction.”

The liberal intelligentsia (a.k.a, America's op-ed writers) seems to side with Obama. Bob Herbert: "But there is something perverse in the effort to portray Senator Obama — who has tried hard to promote a message of unity and healing — as some kind of divisive figure. He has spoken with great insight and empathy, most notably in his race speech in Philadelphia, about the anxiety and frustration of middle- and working-class Americans. In his San Francisco comments, Senator Obama fouled up when he linked frustration and bitterness over economic hard times with America’s romance with guns and embrace of religion. But, please, let’s get a grip. What we ought to be worked up about is the racism that still prevents some people from giving a candidate a fair chance because of his skin color."

The L.A. Times profiles the citizen-journalist who taped Obama at the San Fran fundraiser and wrote about it.

The San Francisco Chronicle wonders if Obama's remarks are getting more negative traction because he uttered them in liberal bastion San Francisco.

Is there something political that is causing Penn.'s gov. to campaign for Clinton as vigorously as possible? The NYT has an article on him:
He helps craft Mrs. Clinton’s messages, escort her
around the state and introduce her at events. He has enlisted his fund-raisers to
assist her, ginned up endorsements and coaxed some superdelegates into staying neutral
until after the Pennsylvania primary. He has made commercials for her. He juggles
state business and her political business with equal urgency — haggling over financing
for a development project in Wilkes-Barre and an airport expansion in Erie one minute,
calling in to Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC the next.
Obama, get real and show your real face one for all.  Obama arrogance and feeling that he is better than anyone else.  Obama and his supporters really belief what some in the media is trying to portrait of him a SUPER OBAMA!!!  I hope God doesn’t lets us have him for president, it will be really more dangerous and chaotic, disastrous economy and very crazy international relationship with the rest of the world in this country than the one we are getting from Bush.
I think it is sad to watch Senator Clinton foaming at the mouth about Senator Obama's bitter comment like a rabid dog, claiming to be "disappointed" while she can barely conceal her glee . . . it's uncomfortable to watch. It just reinforces the feeling that I have always gotten from "the Clintons", that they are at their core actors reading from a script. Too bad this is our real lives and not a dress rehearsal . . .
Please read
I don’t know how many “test” Obama must receive before people began to see his strengths and abilities to lead this country. We now have McCain and Clinton (all 3 of them) coming down on Barack and he is now showing his abilities to fight back.

I find it funny that HRC has a commercial from “rural people” saying – “I’m not bitter”… well the people in the commercial are standing in a CITY and truly don’t look that “rural” to me. He should fire back with a commercial of “rural people” (farmers, small towns, etc)… those people ARE bitter. Heck… … I’m bitter! Our government is looking out for others before taking care of our own. McCain and Clinton are as out of touch as Bush… but hey… … … they come from the same old politics.

It is time that we end this and I feel a BIG upset getting ready to happen in PA. It is time for us to come together – men, women, young, old, black, white… and stand behind our next president – Obama. We can not stand for him to continue to be broken down over what we know in our hearts is right.
America has been run by and for the corporate ELITE for a long time now. Barack is the one trying to change that!! Hillary belongs to the corporate elite, McCain and his rich wife belong to the corporate elite. Barack is the candidate who hears the people.
Yes WE Can!
Obama '08

I agree with the wise woman:  “You MISSPOKE, but you DIDN'T LIE”
Hillary needed something to fall out of Obama's mouth to slow him down just a bit.  Too bad she cannot follow up with something new.  Hillary Clinton ries to show how much of a blue collar woman whe is by drinking a shot and a beer (Crown Royal, made in Canada).  She is about as blue collar as I am a liberal.  That little woman just does not have any shame, whether she tells you that Americans are stupid and she is the leader to get them out or lying about several stories.

Hillary Clinton
A Liar for all seasons
Hillary Clinton .. or Bill Clinton ... do you not see what you are doing to the democratic party?
Where as we are not telling you to step down you should continue to run .

But you are running your campaign like a republican !Even worse. Even Mitt Romney did not turn to this !
You are running your campaign like the republicans ran against Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Al Gore.

Worse still you have shown NO RESPECT for the candidacy of Barack Obama.
Your hatred for him shows.

"How dare he run for president? How dare he outplan and outwit you?Who does he think he is?
Does he not know that America owes me the presidency because I suffered from my husband's infidelity and my public humiliation that came from his lying and impeachment in office?"

He has shown great restraint in not delivering a knockout blow to your campaign.
All he has to do is to reming Americans what a Clinton presidency will be like.
But he hasn't done so .... because Americans know this already.. and thats why he's won 30 states, more deligates and more people have voted for him.
That fact you cannot contest.

There's something about MATH that is clear, indisputable and settling.
Chew on that !
Oh my heavens, I should frame this blog entry cause I just about agree with everything.

I am SO OVER this issue and I bet a lot of people all over the country are so over it too.  The Clintons truly are out of touch (and desparate) if they can't see that.

I understand there is repair work that needs to be done with this and I am confident that Obama can and will and he will continue to garner a broad swathe of support.  Just not understanding why the Clintons are continuing to bash him over it except for no other reason then its just the only way they think they can win.  Wow, what a mandate, wow, what a reason to support them ::eyeroll::

Obama 08
humm, hillary and bill earned $109 million in 7 years in addition to over $500 million for bill's library from questionnable sources and more are coming; whereas, obama earned slightly over $1 million, mostly from his book sales.  who's the elitist here?  for the pot to call the kettle black is palpable, if not downright funny.
Why is this bitter comment such a big deal? Does the media always have to follow Clinton's preferred storyline? Why do you let her dictate the news' narrative?

What I really don't understand is why Obama's yes,  inartful, words are somehow worse than Hillary Clinton's blatant lies? Let's see, there's sniper fire, NAFTA, the family leave act, and many, many more. (The sniper fire by the way, is not a "misstatement" as it's often labeled, but a lie.)

And what about the fact that Bill Clinton said pretty much the same thing as Obama in '91? Why isn't the traditional media reporting that? Why isn't that a soundbite played over and over and over ...
Joan in Il, sorry to break it to you but the entire past 3 days were a media creation AGAINST Obama.  Media elites and Senator Clinton were the ones who were outraged.  Ordinary Pennsylvanians are a whole lot more level-headed.
To Jon, TX

Rendell's connection to the Clintons is the pending campaign fraud lawsuit against the Clintons.

Ah yes football for the boys!  More weight than a battle to the "BITTER END".  Good to see Obama in his end game he needs a gun and his pastor by his side!
Jon, TX.  Its as simple Mrs. Clinton being utterly incapable of crafting her own message which infers her inability to define herself.  She possesses no leadership skills which is apparent by the schitzophrenic nature of her campaign and the constantly changing message.  In fact she is governed mostly by polls, which is why she can't deal with controversies/gaffes bc you can't poll the future and adjust your message accordingly.  She's frightenly similar to W in this way; she is just a puppet.
I am from PA and I love guns and my faith, and Obama's remarks calling people like me bitter, is so offensive, I will not vote for him in the primary, nor in the general election.  This view is held by my fellow PA'rs.
It is interesting that this is not taken in context. Obama was speaking privately to an "elite" group making generalizations about another group. Essentially he was talking behind their backs to get support from the elite group. Kind of like telling the Canadians not to worry about his views on NAFTA.
Here we go, Steelers. Here we go. It's a good day to wear the black and gold.
It's time the news media gave us reader's a break on the 'bitter' issue. It has been front page news for 5 days. How about reporting on real issues, Hillary's support of NAFTA and the Columbian Trade Deal are news, along with the Federal case 'Clinton vs Paul; I don't see how the wording of his speech could be more news worthy than a candidate's status as a defendent in a Federal case; Hillary is accused of accepting 1.2 million dollars in illigal campaign funds and it is less news worthy than the word 'bitter'? People are bitter when their jobs are disappearing overseas and they are losing their houses while we are spending 3 billion dollars a week in Iraq.
I am from Chicago, Latino and I can’t wait to see the PA people paying back Obama for his ridiculous and insensitive comment.  The biggest problem is that we don’t know about that guy, the media is protecting his identity so much that we don’t even know exactly what he really stand for.

Well, yeahh, he speaks a lot about his belief, but, one thing is what he said and other thing what he does.  For example, he talk a lot about loving the country, but the kind of friends he has, whoa re so meaningful to him are very interesting people to watch.  Like Mr. J. W.
He is against NAFTA, but his advisor told the Canada government does not worry; he is not going to do what he is talking.

He is against the war, (the based of his campaign), but he is funding it, and his advisor stated that he is not going to be able to do what he is saying.

Obama said he is for and understand poor people, but he called them “bitter” group.

Obama said he is going to bring changes,  ja ja ja ja ja,   yeahh, it remind me Bush, with his message of changes, oh yeahh, we got great change with Bush…

The worst is that most of African American are not putting attention, they are controlled by the emotion, they just want to have a black president even if it means the end of this country.
Many more are controlled by the media who is working so hard to protect and present Obama as the Great Obama.

What could we expect form someone who doesn’t want even to use his second name and is hiding so much of him?  DON’T TRUST OBAMA, IS MY MESSAGE TO YOU GUYS.  I said the same thing about Bush and the result show that I was right.

Don’t trust Obama for your own safety…
I am Joan, and I approved this message….
We are in the political season of promises and false-hopes.  When Hillary Clinton first ran for the Senate in New York, she promised the economically depressed Upstate region that if elected she would create 'hundreds-of-thousands' new jobs for the area.  Since then there have been some 30, 000 new jobs.  Hillary’s explanation is:  blame it on Bush.

When Bill Clinton was campaigning in 1992, he promised that universal healthcare would be his priority and he would assign Hillary to make it happen.  ‘Hillarycare,’ as her healthcare fiasco became known, was a lead balloon; it was shot down by a Democrat congress as a result of Hillary’s strident unwillingness to negotiate and compromise.  Her now promised ‘universal healthcare’ will also likely be a failure in Congress because of her strident insistence that it must be mandatory for all Americans --- whether they want it or not.  (Hillary does not understand that only a relatively small number of Americans want the government to tell them how they must live their lives.)

Hillary has yet to meet or address a group of voters to whom she has not promised something.  Her most honest quote is:  “I have a million ideas for America, but America can’t afford them.”
SOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRYYYYYY...!!!!!!

not really...

pack of liars...
Ticked off and bitter in PA,

Were you ever going to vote for him in the first place?
So what? Obama misspoke. He didn't lie. In fact, he educated at least one voter--me. I had no idea people in small towns were suffering so much for so long. Their "bitterness" is something we, as Americans, SHOULD talk about. How can we address the problem if no one is willing to talk about it?

The media has focused on candidates' bowling abilities and drinking abilities, but what about their abilities to educate fellow Americans about the plight of people they don't know? For me, this has been Obama's gift. Because of the "crises" that have come to his campaign, I know a lot more about my fellow Americans than I did before this political campaign. That's a good thing.

Obama spoke clumsily, yes, but it's these kinds of difficult topics that raise the discussion in American politics. I hope we, as Americans, are big enough to handle it.
this video will answer all the questions

It shouldn't be surprising that Hillary doesn't see the bitterness voters are feeling. After all, she doesn't recognize that bitterness over being denied a coronation is all that drives her today.
This is the classic tale of the Boy (or Girl) who cried wolf.

From a kindergarten essay to Nafta ads in Ohio Sen. Clinton has been set to pounce on Obama at the first sign of error.  Call it Pavlovian.  She has no restraint and no judgement.  She hasn't managed to feign the appropriate amount of outrage at any of the appropriate times.  She comes of looking like a political hack.  Like a rookie.  The fact remains that Obama hasn't made the sort of mistake needed for a Clinton advantage - how ever, when he does her reaction will be the same as it ever was and she may not get the benefit of doubt.

That and she's already lost.  In the race because she is a Clinton and no other.
To Ticked Off & Bitter in PA:

I wonder if you read/heard the full context of Obama's statement or just the snippet the MSM media have run on a continual loop or what Clinton/McCain have used over and over again. When I first heard the cling to guns and God comment, I thought WTF?  But when I saw the statements preceding and after that line, I understood what he was trying to say.  I love the fact that elites like Clinton go out their way to call out Obama as an elitist.  Can you honestly say that the politics of the past 20 years have been good for you or your state as a whole?  Is so, then Clinton or McCain should be your president.  Good luck.
"During the 1990s, I cannot remember being asked about immigration... Why? Because the economy was working... And average Americans didn't have to go around looking for someone to blame."

http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1688794,00.html

So Hillary feels that if the economy isn't going well that the average American, not just small town people, but all average Americans go around "looking for someone to blame."
I wear black and gold, and love the Stillers, but I would never vote for Obama.
To Post readers, For the record:

The case is Paul v. Clinton

She is the defendant in this lawsuit, let that be clear.
We cannot remain silent as our nation engages in one of history's most cruel and senseless wars. During these days of human travail we must encourage creative dissenters. We need them because the thunder of their fearless voices will be the only sound stronger than the blasts of bombs and the clamor of war hysteria." - Rev. Martin Luther King Jr
I agree with the wise woman.  We all can misspeak, but to lie is to fail the most important test to be President.  Unfortunately for Hillary she lied about sniper fire, Not supporting NAFTA when White House papers said she helped Bill get it passed.  Irish Peace fable, unsured patient who died in Ohio, but hospital administrator reported that patient was treated and didn't die. Did her father teach her to shoot a gun.  Who knows, because she has trouble with the truth.
Obama has shown a great deal of restraint by not bringing up the truthfullness issue sooner, but I'm glad he did. Hillary disqualified herself to be President because she has trouble with the truth.
If McClinton owned a pogo stick factory it would be shipped to China....but she'd own the American Selling Rights....that's not going to save your jobs...
Piece Mill America has been Clinton's Motto for years...The way only to get it back is NOT let her
"FIX IT", (that's kinda like fox watching the hen house)....
Vote Obama..he has your rights and well being in mind.... no strings attached....
Actually, RZ, Obama wasn't "talking behind their backs to get support from the elite group."

He was addressing a question from a volunteer who was about to leave for PA to do some canvassing. The question was about what to expect from PA voters and Obama, if you listen to the tape and not just the soundbite, is actually empathizing with the people of rural america who've lost their jobs. Cling to wasn't the right phrase and he's admitted that, but he was not trying to be demeaning.

And for the record, it was Hillary's team who told the Canadians not to worrry about NAFTA.
Hillary just does not get that so many people simply do NOT like her, as a person because she has spent so much time in her life "going after" her adversaries.  She is actually doing damage to the progress that women have made in the workplace by being so negative and viscious.

I have worked very happily and successfully in a male dominated profession for 12 years and it can be challenging.  It can also be very rewarding when you are recommended by male colleauges because of your performance and hard work.  Unfortunately, Hillary is displaying the type of behavior that I have seen result in people "rolling their eyes" and feeling pity for women that cannot make it on the merits yet they sling fits and "demand" to be taken seriously, and don't know when to give up when the writing is on the wall. Most people expect that if a women, that chooses to act this way, does not get her way, she will resort to agressiveness and try to "destroy" anyone that gets in the way.  Hillary has confirmed this fear to so many people that her negatives are "firm" and cannot be recovered.

I have never seen women succeed in this manner and ultimately, people feel uncomfortable around them.  It does not matter if you believe that women should be treated equally when your profession is dominated by men.  As a woman, you must assume that the worst will be expected by your male colleauges until you prove to be otherwise.  One of the most important traits of a leader is to be able to get along with and understand  colleauges, and to gain their respect.  You must be willing to play the "good ol' boy" game.  The key is becoming one of the "guys" for real, not by manipulating, demanding, threatening, or armtwisting.  This reminds men of their ex-wives and reminds women of the ex-wife that has to fight their divorce for the rest of their lives while ruinning everyone's lives in the process.

My experience is that you have to work harder, be successful but not at the expense of others and yet still be able to understand things from your colleauges' perspectives.

Sadly, Hillary is losing respect among the people, and will be pitied by everyone in the end because she believes that she is in a zero sum game.  This is no longer true as voters are becoming more informed and have no patience for self-serving politicians, or leaders.  People felt that a woman could overcome these perceptions, but now the most famous woman at all is making us all look like wild eyed, old school feminists that still believe that we have to fight for our equality, instead of proving everyday that we are equal.

What about Peter Paul vs Clinton in 10 days???

Where are Clintons Taxes and earmarks???
I hope God doesn’t lets us have him for president, it will be really more dangerous and chaotic, disastrous economy and very crazy international relationship with the rest of the world in this country than the one we are getting from Bush.

This is based on WHAT?
To : Its up to you in PA.

You are absolutely right....something did look otu of whack with that ad ..... They look like big city folks and they sound like big city folks..."SHILLS".

At least now everyone can better understand the difference between misspoke and lie, lie, lie. Senator Obama, compared to the gutter politics of the Clintons you are indeed an elitist that I will be voting for in the general election!
Add Pennsylvania to Ohio and Florida that will not go Democratic if Obama is the nominee.

The latte liberal Democratic analysts on MSNBC keep pounding the Obama theme.

A big "I told you so" awaits them in November as if they care.
Obama for President 08.  After PA, HRC will be your follower.
Obama's bitter remarks are bitter pills to swallow. Next he will attack pick-up trucks.  Obama has no  clue.  He is  running with the very thinnest of resumes. He has not been vetted.  Who are those billionaires in San Francisco that are backing him?
Who pushed him into this run for the presidency??What do they want in return for their support??  Obama needs to be investigated to the max. The truth needs to come out about Rezko, Nadhmi Auchi (muslim billionaire), Saharb Abassi (Muslim billionaire), Professor Khalidi (Muslim terrorist supporter).  Where these people at the San Franciso fund raiser and what agenda did they give Obama to advance on their behalf.

I don't trust Obama and I feel he has a secret  agenda.  Where is a Drew Pearson when you need one?  Investigate extensively like NOW.

Add a new work to describe Obma.  Aloof!!!!
The backlash against Hillary is just beginning.  She overreached on this one.  For the average Joe voter, like me, there is nothing I hate more than a politician who takes some little tiny microscopic issue and tries to use it as a wedge to force me to vote for them.  It really is disgusting and no Hillary this will not get me to vote for you.  Frankly, Obama was correct, I am bitter.
I AGREE THAT THE  CLINTONS ARE PUTTING ON THEIR GAME   FACE WAITING AND  READY FOR A FIGHT WHAT EVER IT TAKES.SHE ACTED LIKE A CRACKHEAD RUNNING AFTER CRACK THIS WOMAN HAS AN PROBLEM BARACK ISN'T A LOSER AND HE ISN'T WEAK THE WAY SOME ON THESE CABLE CHANNELS AND REPORTERS ARE WRITING AND TALK ABOUT.PA IS FOR HER LOSE NOT OBAMA THESE PEOPLE SHOULD REMEMBER. WOW! ALREADY HE IS BEING DISRESPECTED BY ANOTHER SENATOR WHO IS HIS PEER THE SAME GENERATION BY CALLING HIM A "BOY" WHERE WAS THE OUTRAGE ABOUT THAT, NOT MUCH AS CHANGE HAS IT!BUT THAT'S AS THE OLD SAY GO'S WHAT DON'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONG SO STAND UP AND KNOW YOU ARE NOT ALONG IN THIS WE STILL SUPPORT YOU .
For an in-depth analysis of the two Dem candidates and how they compare/contrast, check out an article in the current (April 17th) issue of The New York Review of Books etitled "Molehill Politics" by Elizabeth Drew.  It's online; a good read.
Obama told the Philly Inquirer that people find stability in their traditions and are vulnerable to politicians exploiting wedge issues. “‘As a wise old woman who was talking to me the other day said, “You misspoke, but you didn’t lie,”’” he said.”

------------------------------------------------------

Amen. Hillary's ship is sinking.
We vote for charactor , honesty and experience and judgement, Obama is slowly  but surley showing the lack of all four. Do we need a false demi-God leading us to greater shame?  Do not try to sell me on the poor little Black boy stuff, didn't listen for 20 years to his preacher, good voting records, dealing with some of the "good old boys" from the Chicago Machine. Wake up America, you are allowing a false prophet to brainwash you, to control you into believing he is the answer.  He is not . Small town America has more sense than to buy this cra-.
You know what..........you people in PA who are 'offended' because HRC told you to be...get a grip. Obama was actually trying to defend you!! He was trying to get people to understand that the government has let all blue-collar Americans down. The government keeps making promises and then looks the other way when it time to actually DO something!!

You guys say Senator Obama is bamboozeling you. What about Senator Clinton?? I think her motives and tactics are shameful. But you don't seem to mind them. Is it because it is EXACTLY what you expect from her?? Nasty, calculated remarks that do NOTHING to make her seem more palatable, but do EVERYTHING to make her opponent appear downright awful.

Shame on HRC!!!! and Shame on all of you who refuse to see the exact divisive and nasty politics that have put you right where you are today: no jobs, no money, no homes and yet you support the very person who helped put you there - Bill and Hillary Clinton!!

Someone please explain this madness to me in a way that makes sense.
Hey "Ticked off and Bitter:"  Thanks for purporting to speak for everyone in Pennsylvania.  Trouble is, you don't.  If you are anything but frustrated and bitter with how Washington has ignored us for the last 20+ years despite endless promises that our region would be revitalized (Republicans and Democrats alike) you must have some serious rose-colored glasses or powerful prescription meds.  Obama spoke the truth.  It is Hillary and McSame who are WAY out of touch.

I, and MANY other Pennsylvanians, will proudly vote for Obama next Tuesday so that we can at least have a ray of hope that REAL change will be made.
