Clinton: Hillary's poll problems

Posted: Wednesday, April 16, 2008 9:16 AM by Domenico Montanaro

A new Washington Post/ABC poll shows lots of problems for Clinton. "Democrats by a 2-1 margin, 62-31 percent, now see Obama as better able to win in November -- a dramatic turn from February, when Clinton held a scant 5-point edge on this measure, and more so from last fall, when she crushed her opponents on electability. The poll finds other pronounced problems for Clinton. Among all Americans, 58 percent now say she's not honest and not trustworthy, 16 points higher than in a precampaign poll two years ago. Obama beats her head-to-head on this attribute by a 23-point margin. The number of Americans who see Clinton unfavorably overall has risen to a record high in ABC/Post polling, 54 percent -- up 14 points since January. Obama's unfavorable score has reached a new high as well, up 9 points, but to a lower 39 percent."

More: "As things stand, this poll suggests a close general election contest. Obama has a scant 5-point advantage over McCain, 49-44 percent, compared with a 52-40 percent race last month. McCain and Clinton stand at 48-45 percent; it was a Clinton advantage, 50-44 percent, last month."

The Washington Post’s headline for the poll: "Democrats Willing to Let Battle Continue." From the article: "While Clinton retains a big edge over Obama on experience, public impressions of her have taken a sharply negative turn. Today, more Americans have an unfavorable view of her than at any time since The Post and ABC began asking the question, in 1992. Impressions of her husband, former president Bill Clinton, also have grown negative by a small margin."

Meanwhile, a new set of state polls from the L.A. Times/Bloomberg in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Indiana, also have bad news for Clinton -- as Obama leads in two of the three states (IN and NC), while Clinton's lead in PA is only five points. "In all three states, Clinton was seen as better-equipped to handle trade and healthcare policy. But she does not appear to have been as persuasive in making a core argument of her campaign: that she would be better-prepared to lead the nation's military and foreign policy. Asked who would be better as commander in chief, voters in North Carolina chose Obama, 45% to 28%; in Indiana, Obama was chosen 37% to 29%. Only in Pennsylvania did voters prefer Clinton as commander in chief, 44% to 39%.”

“There are some ominous signs that the party will not easily unify after a long and contentious primary fight. Fully 30% of Clinton supporters in North Carolina said they would switch to McCain if Obama was the nominee (only 14% of Obama backers would defect if Clinton was the nominee)."

This New York Times story doesn’t help the drop-out rumors:

Per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Bill Clinton raised the “bitter” controversy while campaigning yesterday in Pennsylvania – but only while defending his record as president. "In all of this back-and-forth between Hillary and her opponent over who said what about how small town Pennsylvanians feel, what was really overlooked is the other part of her opponents' answer -- which basically said, ‘You were overlooked in the Bush presidency, and you were overlooked when I was president,’” he said. "They have repeatedly said there was no difference in the two. So if you believe that, you should probably vote for him. But if you want to know the facts, I think it's worth looking at. I can understand, especially for young people who may not remember."

Indeed, it was classic Bill. Here’s the Boston Globe: "Older voters gravitate to Hillary Clinton because they're too wise to be fooled by Barack Obama's rhetoric, former president Bill Clinton told Pennsylvania voters yesterday." “‘I think there is a big reason there's an age difference in a lot of these polls,’ he said. ‘Because once you've reached a certain age, you won't sit there and listen to somebody tell you there's really no difference between what happened in the Bush years and the Clinton years; that there's not much difference in how small-town Pennsylvania fared when I was president and in this decade.’”

“‘So I think it's important that we get to the truth of this,’ Clinton continued, going on to compare his and Bush's record on jobs, family incomes, and other measures.”

“Clinton has long admitted to bungling universal health care in 1994, but a never-before-seen note she penned to the late Sen. Daniel Moynihan reveals how deeply she thought the failure hurt her -- and the nation. ‘If I had listened to you about health care in 1994, I would be far better off today -- but more importantly -- so would the nation's health care system,’ Clinton wrote Moynihan in October 2000, near the end of her New York Senate campaign to succeed the retiring Moynihan.” The late Moynihan had his own compromise plan, but the Clintons refused to accept anything less than full coverage. Moynihan’s widow is backing Obama.

This poll is meaningless...what is the national poll with Obama head to head with McCain, and then, what is the same matchup on the electoral map, with due regard given to undecideds?  That's the most meaningful poll.
These poll numbers are skewed by the fact that the main stream media has been grossly unfair to Mrs Clinton, and by the fact that it gives a pass to Obama on EVERYTHING he says and does.

Maybe Obama's new freinds, the tax evading Kennedy's, will start to pay the estate tax the way they want everyone else to once Obama is elected. Go to my blog to link to the Teddy Kennedy 'ambush interview' video, it's a hoot.
'...62-31 percent, now see Obama as better able to win in November -- ....'

SURPRISE !!
We've had 16 years of lies and coverups...
16 years of scandals and sell outs ...
16 years of incompetence....
16 years of bitter partisanship....

'...Among all Americans, 58 percent now say she's not honest and not trustworthy,...'

OH !
COME ON !!
Who are the Americans who think she IS Honest ?
That's why we're falling behind in trade and technology.... the idiot fringe
Hillary is a crook !!

'...Obama beats her head-to-head on this attribute by a 23-point margin....'

Crooked, unelectible little Hillary !!
I demand that pollsters stop doing surveys in the unimportant states.  The only states that matter are the ones I win.  If you do surveys only in those states, I wipe the floor with Obama.

I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.
I am surprised none of you pundits on first read have ever thought of the most obvious reason McCain's numbers against the democrats are up is because the democrats have no nominee.
Think about it.  McCain gets to float around looking wonderful because he doesn't have to fight anyone.
Meanwhile, he has Hillary doing his work for him.  But, as a result it is taking a toll on the democrats candidates.
You cannot really accurately poll McElitist's voters when he is not yet paired with a Democratic opponent. Once this is done -- once he has an opponent -- it will allow us to see where things stand, and I expect McBomb's numbers to go down significantly. Note that he has not been seriously attacked by the Dems until this week, and more attacks are coming.
On Hillary, for an upstart candidate like Obama to even defeat this establishment candidate is astounding. You have to realize that Obama is not well known as a politician in America and only built his profile this year, while Hillary is a famous, well-established Democratic politician. So the fact that Obama is wable to defeat ehr and withstand her attacks demonstrates the hunger for a new leadership and the recognition that Hillary is nothing but a dishonest and very desperate politician.
I saw in some poll results this morning that responders trusted Senator Clinton more than Senator Obama on the economy.

Do they not see the Clinton Campaign's financial irresponsibility?

$9 million in debt?

UC Davis considering a collections agency for the campaign's unpaid bills?
I think we have to take polls with a grain of salt if for no other reason than that they show great variability even amongst themselves.  Nevertheless I note a clear trend of ever-widening between Obama and Clinton on the Real Clear Politics array of polls they use.  I suspect that's the truest measure of what's going on naturally.  Clinton is just not closing the spread, instead Obama's lead is hardening.  At the same time, Obama getting hit from all sides is showing in the polls (between him and McCain).  Not a surprise.  He's getting hammered by everyone and McCain's getting a free ride.

Its a miracle the polls don't show a big lead over Obama AT THIS POINT.  And it will only change more positively for Obama once the Dems truly unite.

The polls do show a protracted battle favors McCain so if we want a McCain presidency, let's keep the divisive battle going.

BTW, I understand none of us want to cut off voting.  Most of us truly believe that we all want to vote.  But with the Republicans settling up so early, we could be paying a price for it, I'm just saying.

YES WE CAN!
Wow Mr Montanaro after I just blasted you on another blog about your avid love of Hillary you totally shock me with this story. You shot down my Hillary bias opinion of you for a day. This is to the person calling Obama a racist, you are a total moron.Unlike you people that are of mixed decent tend to embrass the fact that they are multi cultured unlike the way that some view them by their domanant appearance.Heck even none domanant in some cases. So to call a man that is HALF BLACK /HALF WHITE a racist is just down right stupid.
I think that Bill Clinton has been utterly condescending toward young voters and looks down on them as foolish idiots.  I sure hope these remarks get the same attention that Obama's bitter remarks got.  Bill Clinton has belittled young people because they won't vote for his wife.  What a joke he is.
Hillary, please.   While polls are not the be all, end of the conversation, the trends are meaningful.  The only beneficiaries of you hanging in an unwinnable (for you) contest in order are:  McCain and Obama.  The math is the math and clearly you are only destroying what is left of any positive image the Clinton's had.  If the margin in PA is single digits, please do yourself, your husband and the Party a favor and bow out gracefully.
Bill Clinton is fighting so hard for his wife to be President because if he made $52 million dollars giving speeches in the last 8 years, just think how much the former first woman President could command for giving a speech.  Follow the money!  Enough of the Clintons and their self-absorbed lies.
Look, I know the fourth estate just can't understand why Pennsylvania isn't falling all over itself for their man, Obama but they'll just have to wait until we, the voters, have our say.  There's only a few more states to go and then if, Obama wins in the end, the press can do their little victory dance, like they did when their man Bush beat Gore.
Only Hillary could bring her negatives above 50%!It's truly amazing that people can vote for her still.Pennsylvania is still a liongshot for Barack, but withing his reach also.

New Poll out from the State of Denial has Hillary leading 99% to Barack's 1% ! They even held a Caucus. LOL!

Have faith all you New Yorker's who just Love Hillary. America is sending her back there soon.
Her own hands sent this forth. Not to mention her ready on 'day one' claim, that was a complete sham. She has been exposed as anything but.

Her tangled mess of a campaign, the huge early lead  she has lost, her stealing from her vendors, her padded resume, and her mean spirited, and duplicitous tactics, have left her in the lurch.

Barack is the candiate who is more trustworthy by far.
The reason Clinton is losing is because of all the media bias against her.  They keep reporting about every time she makes up a story, outright lies, contradicts herself or her husband. They insist on reporting on how badly she has bungled her first management responsibilities (that being her campaign), how she has come across as inconsistant and even schitzophrenic (from tough as nails Rocky, to pathetic victim of the press, then to Paulette Revere, then to hard drinking bar girl, then to quick shootin' Annie Oakley). The press just refuses to stop pointing out that she has demonstrated zero leadership skills or the hypocrasy of someone who is worth over 100 million dollars and a graduate of Yale Law School who is willing to call a rival in the same political party an Elitist.  If the press would just keep quiet about all her flaws, including the fact that over 70% of all Americans consider her to be untrustworthy and dishonest, then I am  sure she could win this election.  It is all their fault!
"Obama LIES, and nobody has the guts to report it. The media is afraid to accused of RACISM"

you need to get a grip! Just because you have some deep seeded hate or simply voting for Hillary because she is a woman... doesn't give you the right to spew hate on here!

The reality is that HRC has a lot more personalities to report! Plan and simply! People see through her and see all 9 personalities for what they TRULY represent!
Pat Huntington NY, if those same polls gave Clinton the advantage you would be celebrrating and pointing to this as a reason to nominate her. You and the guy after you scream about unfair media and all that hype, then you pick and choose the stories that are fair and meaningful.
Personally i think it says something if Mccain would perfer to take you (Clinton) on rather than Obama. Which is exactly what they have been reporting in the Drudge report.
Hillary hadthe nomination and lost it cause she thought we would hand it to her...THAT's HER FAULT...NOT THE MEDIA AND NOT OBAMA's! HERS! If she had fought for the nomination she would have won ages ago~!
Hillary is unelectable in November...

Ok, I don't really believe that, but there is much more evidence to prove that point than the countless Hillary supporters who claim this about Obama everyday.  Annoying though isn't it?

IMHO either democrat will win in the fall against McCain, once the party unites.  I just believe that Obama will win by a landslide and will have a much more positive affect on down ballot races.

Democrat 08!
GO HILLARY !!!
Obama will not win - he is ARROGANT - so is his wife - when she speaks you can hear the anger and mean spirit - why??? This is not what we need/want in the White House!
For the candidate that enjoyed unprecedented free media for a year proclaiming her the 'inevitable" nominee her continued slide is nothing short of amazing.
Hillary outright lies to the American public and it gets 2-3 days of play.
Obama's preacher said some supremely stupid things 7 years ago and the media is still playing clips.
Hillary's choice to try and lower everyone's negatives to match her own instead of spending the time & energy to raise her stature most likely cost her the nomination.
It rarely pays to go negative when you are in front and she does it time & again because she cannot figure out a way to make herself look better in the eyes of the electorate.
Finally, she & her surrogates appear to be more worried about what the competition might do than being concerned with what they should be doing to the opposition.  In this regard they have and continue to provide invaluable aid & assistance to the republican party.  Regardless of who the nominee ends up being.  As any military historian can tell you the first step to defeat is to be the one being done to rather being the one doing to the other.
In the final analysis the democratic party will never be able to turn the page without Hillary & Bill implicit or explicit assistance in doing so.  In this effort their actions of late have been invaluable.
Who are the Americans who think she IS Honest ?MSierra, SF (Sent Wednesday, April 16, 2008 9:28 AM)

Apparently the one's that were toasting Hillary at the bar when she was doing shots and beers, with shots that were made in Canada.

And of course, there are those women who could care less if Hillary is a role model to their daughters when it comes to the art of lying.  What sane woman would teach their daughter that it is alright to lie because Hillary does it?

58 percent of Americans say Hillary is a liar......
I'm willing to bet it is more like 80%.....

Hillary Clinton
A Liar for all Seasons
The problem for mcshame is that he should be 30 points ahead right now and he is not...even dukaca had a 30 point lead at one point once he was the 'presumptive' nominee...once people spend a little time with the flip flopper from AZ they will learn to hatee him like most of his senate collegues do on both sides of the aisle
Mrs. Clinton unfavorable rate is now 54% and Barack's is at it's all time high (because of this bitter flap)at 39%.  It seems the Clinton efforts to paint Barack in an unfavorable light with voters is not working...again!

Mr. Clinton seems to be trying to say older voters remember that his administration as being "wonderful".  Let's see, his legacy footprints were...NAFTA agreement (which Mrs. Clinton who once supported it and now does not), a failed medical program (which Mrs. Clinton crafted), and let's not forget impeachment (the second president in history to be impeached).  Yes, Mr. Clinton your presidency was wonderful!!
The Clintons are clowns and have used their own daughter to pander to young people.  If she is in fact out there in the arena also, she should have to field these hard questions, not hide behind the auro of first daughter privacy and skirt issues which are uncomfortable.  If she wants to stay private, then stay out of the arena.  Leave it to the vampire, Hillary.
Stop with the media is biased against Hillary stuff.  Remember when Hillary had the commanding lead and it was going to be Hillary vs. Guiliani. Remember the debate where Hillary and Edwards were caught whispering that is was a shame the two of them just couldn't debate each other.  Remember the debate where Kucinich was asked what he prays for and he said he prayed that someone would ask him a darn question at the debate.  Ask Edwards, Kucinich, Gravel, Biden and Richardson if they feel the media and the debates were against Hillary.  But before you ask them, plug your ears because the laughter will be deafening.
The Clinton campaign will continue, no matter the growing evidence against Senator Clinton being able to win. And she is entirely too smart to believe that a win is now achievable. So, what is more likely is that Senator Clinton has begun to see on the horizon another “Lewinski moment” in which many of those people she was sure “loved” her are now gone off doing their thing with someone else. She is now, understandably, trying desperately—ready to appeal to almost anything and anyone, even to destroy her Party—to avoid the pain of another “Lewinski moment” as it looms closer, born of expectations and hopes, to which she is no stranger, that have proven unrealistic and overly optimistic. This is made even sadder by the frantic public efforts of Bill to “praise her,” to “make amends,” to “make up”—as a millionaire ex-President is reduced to begging on her behalf. What a spectacle! This is not politics anymore; no, it’s too sad even for that.
With all thes polls why are the superdelegates keeping quiet ? Step in and finish the game. The longer they wait it is bad for the party. Democrats should be bold to take a decision and show the republican that they are united behind thier candidate.
The media has become too obsessed with polling data. All of these polls are absolutely MEANINGLESS!!!! I don't think Obama, Clinton, or McCain should put much stock in them. Additionally, I think Americans should become informed about the candidates themselves and vote with their minds and conscience. As an Obama supporter, I certainly don't think Obama should be following any polling data. He and his campaign need to get door-to-door and win each and every vote.
When and when will the Clinton's stop lying and trying to destroy the democratic party. The only thing the two Clinton's are accomplishing is splitting the Democratic party I'm 48 years old and have voted in every election since '80 and all we heard out of the Democratic party was we had to get the young people involved, well in '04 Dr. Dean came along and started the snowball and four years later another came along named Obama has turn this ball into a huge momentous monster...So what do we get now the old democratic machine destroying all of the work that has taken place. I am so sick and tired of the Clinton's LIES and their dirty political tricks to say and do anything to get themselves back into the White House. I remember the Clinton years '92 to '00, all of the lies how can this country forget. And speaking of elitist to me there is no other person of being a elitist than a person who can not admit he or she has made a mistake, did you hear Hillary stick her nose in the air and state over the Bosnia lie "it was my first miss statement in 14 years of public service" that is not a elitist statement? I have never seen a more arrogant person like her since her husband was President.  I hope the good people of PA. see this that the Clinton's are nothing but lying cheating political whores, they we will do anything to help them advance their personal gains....... If she get s the Democratic  A.B.C.      (Anybody but Clinton's)

P.S. i caught this on MLK day she said "I was so furious hearing of Dr. King being assassinated I went back to my dorm room and threw my book bag against the wall"  When did book bags come into the scene? I'm pretty sure bookbages were not in the '60's

The irony is if she had stayed gracious through this whole campaign she may have been favored more b/c Obama's mistakes would have compounded his candidacy...while she, staying positive and even defending him at times...could've earned the trust of Democratic voters. It's her own fault for treating this like the general election and not the Democratic primary. Mark Penn owes her a refund.
Waooo,  the media is as evil as hell,  I am wonderign about all those poll,  where are those poll come from?
who participate? it is not clear, i havent met anyone who has been ask or call to answer a question for those polls.  I start questioning those Polls.

Knowing that the media is trying so hard to make Obama look the SUper Obama, I wont doubt that they are making up those polls, trying to make PA and IN voters to think that Obama is better and made them to vote form him.
Hillary is so negative, that he could never be a battery.

She is so dishonest--almost no one trusts her, according to the polls.

The way I see, she has already taken herself out of the race,,,now she trying to take Obama out as well.

This is just sad.
Eileen,

It's not the media's fault that 70% of americans think she is untrustworthy. It's Hillary's fault.
Media bias Media bias Media bias.  How many times have the elections not followed the polls?

If we voted Candidate A and Candidate B, she'd be a shoe-in by now --- follow the issues.  Hillary's more inclusive.
Eileen H, of Portland, Maine...You are overdosing on the Clinton Kool-Aid.  To blame the media for Hillary's poor campaigning?!?!

You also believe that Bill Clinton when he said "I DID NOT HAVE SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH THAT WOMAN!"

When is Hillary going to own up to her misstakes and poor campaigning?  Hillary blames everyone else for her misstakes, from GW Bush to Patti Doylis to Bill Clinton to Mark Penn. Its always someone else's fault.
ONE ADVICE FOR YOU,  DONT TRUST OBAMA!!!
I said the same thing about Bush and many were askign me why? or saying that i was stupid, well, the time and circunstances show that i was correct.

ONE MORE TIME,  DONT TRUST THAT GUY
