The scene from the spin room

NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum covers the take from Obama’s chief strategist David Axelrod. “I think that this is the way the Clinton campaign thinks. They are running nothing but negative ads in Pennsylvania. And she came in and she was obviously aided by a series of questions for the first 50 minutes that were virtually all aimed at Senator Obama,” he said. “So it's easy to take the offensive when others are helping. Nonetheless, that was her strategy. She came in, she wanted to be negative. She was negative. They seem proud of that. That seems to characterize their campaign. I think most people though want something else in our politics.”

On whether the questions were unfair to Obama: “You know what, I think you show up for a debate. You answer the questions you are asked. I'm not here to whine about it. Everybody saw. It was an unusual debate. I've never seen anything quite like it. But I'm not going to complain about it.”

Did Obama have a good night? “I think he had a good night because he's a genuine honorable person trying to deal with the problems facing this country. He's not in there trying to rip someone else down. He's not in there trying to score political points. I think people will appreciate that. They want a change in our politics and they know they are not going to get it from the same old approach.”

Per NBC/NJ's Athena Jones, the Clinton camp was clearly pleased with her performance and were focusing on the handgun ban question to Obama -- and were passing out a copy of the survey he filled out while running for state senate showing his support for a handgun ban. Communications director Howard Wolfson said the Ayres Weather Underground issue had now been raised and would be something voters would now be asking about.

He also repeated that the Democrats would unify behind the eventual nominee. "Regardless of who the nominee is, there are huge stakes in the election and Democrats are going to do everything they can to unites behind our nominee and elect that person president," he said.

I am definitely voting for Obama.  And I really think the super delegates better start making up their minds before the Democratic party is destroyed!  By the way, I am one of those independents they are so worried about!  I am so sick and tired of the same old politics!  Obama is right, I am bitter.
George Stephanopoulos appears to still work for the Clintons.

Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, flag pins and "bitter" must be more important than health care, the economy, Iraq, big oil, social security and education.

Silly Season in politics was on full display.

The first 50 minutes were solely directed at issues that have nothing to do with the problems facing this country and with the exception of the Bosnia question it was all directed at Senator Obama.

If that's what this debate was really about, where were discussions of NAFTA, CAFTA and Mark Penn and Bill Clinton's confilcts of interest?  Certainly if we're going to deem Obama's negatives important in this debate aren't her debates equally as important?

For weeks and months I've heard Clinton supporters screaming about talking about issues.  Are they going to be satisfied with the disregard with which the issues were handled last night?
Clearly ABC did a bad job on the debate.  They were the losers.  I think just as Hillary came out as the winner over time in the debate when she was attacked by Obama and Edwards, Obama will come out as the winner in this debate because of the attack by Clinton, George Stephanopoulos, and Charles Gibson (too too bad for ABC that Peter Jennings is gone).

It could be that there's a backlash that actually hurts Clinton, especially given her need to win PA by a large margin and win back some delegates.  I doubt that this is going to happen unless something bigger than bitter breaks out in the next few days.
Attention Wolfy, who cares about Ayers, Flag pin, & rev. wright, only Hillary and Sean Hannity, Jose Scarborough, Pattie Buchanan, & Chuck Todd, who i have lost respect for, since he never questioned Charlie Brown & George Stupidnolopis's questionings.

a debate is suppose to be about issues that are affecting us everyday. not this silliness crap that charlie & george & hillary pulled off last night.
Obama can now count on my vote here in NC.  I was leaning towards him going into the debate, and after seeing his calm demeaning while continually being raked over the coals, I am satisfied with my decision. What a lynch mob that debate was!!
Wow.  Thank you, New Independent.  I was most concerned, after last night's debacle, for the uncommitted people of Pennsylvania who were looking to hear substantive issues discussed.  Thank God you, and hopefully tons of others, can see throught the same ole, same ole.  YUK!    GO OBAMA!!   Barbara in Seattle, WA
I am surprised at the comments that Senator Obama had a bad night.  In spite of the silly and pointless questions he was asked, he maintained his dignity, looked his questioners in the eyes and answered calmly and thoughtfully.  Mrs. Clinton did not ever look the questioners in the eyes.  Perhaps a silly thing, but I think it says loads about her character.
Todd has unfortunately let all the insipid compliments by his amen choir at MSNBC go to his head.  He entirely misses the point that debates are not reducable to transcripts.  It's not all about 'what they say' but rather about 'how they say it.'  What seems patently obvious to the voters- that Hillary Clinton is simply spinning platitudes in cynical bad faith- is lost on boy genius Todd.  Barack's earnest protestations concerning the trivial nature of the questions convinced us once again that he's the only serious candidate left standing.  A quick look at the post debate polls on ABC, MSNBC and Drudge is a better measure of voter sentiment than a parsing of the transcript.  Elections are about 'feel.'  And, we the people feel that in Barack we have a true friend. Actually- that's the very same paradigm that served Hillary's husband so well- and got him elected twice.
I was so disappointed in the ABC debate, I thought that I was watching Fox News, certainly not the highly respected Charles C and George S. I am now leaning towards Obama because Clinton was an attack machine and not willing to talk about the issues. She steadily attacked and he was a gentleman towards her while attempting to disuss the issues.
I think it is really funny that Hillary is pushing the weak association with Ayres given that Bill pardoned or commuted the sentence to two members of group he belonged to.  It really goes to show that they do not have anything of substance to use against Obama.

The whole debate was a disgrace and Obama kept trying to pivot back to issues (even when Hillary's sniper fire issue came up) but they wouldn't let him.

I am very disappointed with Hillary and ABC.
So this is what Axelrod calls not whining, this is what he calls taking the high road? "She came in, she wanted to be negative. She was negative. They seem proud of that. That seems to characterize their campaign. I think most people though want something else in our politics.”  Axelrod should just stop, he has been negative in all the campaigns he has been associated with.  Ask Dr. Alice Palmer, ask Mr. Hull, Mr. Ryan.  It is ridiculous for Axelrod to paint this rosy picture of what a nice guy Obama is.  You know you are talking about a Chicago politician, right?
I think I like this Laura Appelbaum.  Well said, I agree.
Checkout Drudge  double digits..

McClinton was clearly prep'ed to attack but Obama can't be accussed of skirting the issues...or losing his cool...

It not his fault ABC wanted to go negative thru out the debate...I like how Obama broke the ice on forgien policy issues and McClinton circumvented the wars power act..She rewritting the heroin Esther..
embellishing everything that's ever happened because some how her dysfunctional codependency is reality..
Hillary is not a very happy person but that doesn't mean we have to feel sorry or responsible for the things that this pathological liar manifest...
It is about time that the media starting vetting Obama. For the first time questions are being raised about his past and he can't seem to answer them without stumbling and trivializing them but I don't doubt Matthews and Olbermann will come to his aid and slant their take on things.
Wait - what?  The debate was fantastically boring and the questions asked of Obama were absurd.  Clinton's harping did not come across well, and I thought he seemed calm and serious.  But of course I watched the debate on DVR and so didn't watch whatever brilliant coverage followed, so what do I know, right?  Seriously, punditry, do you think people stayed up to watch your analysis?  We have jobs, you know.
For an in-depth analysis of Clinton/Obama and how they compare/contrast, check out the article in the current issue of The New York Review of Books entitled "Molehill Politics" by Elizabeth Drew.  It's online; a good read, indeed.
Hillary was to attacking in this (tabloid) debate, which makes her look desperate. I was waiting for her to say "Screw Em, vote for me, I'm more electable"
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/16/hillary-clinton-on-workin_n_97017.html
The debate was not enough on issues that are important to us.
It was reported a couple of days ago that the Clinton campaign offered a PA city mayor an opportunity to have Bill Clinton give free speech to his town if that mayor came out and endorsed Hillary.  I wonder what the Clinton campaign promised George Stephanopolis and Charles Gibson for their blatant endorsement during the moderation!!

It is a well known fact that George was Bill Clinton's Communication Director during his presidency, so why the hell would he be allowed to be a moderator of this debate?  I too was looking for hard questions to be asked, but this debate was just a plain nasty attack.  Why couldn't we the people, voters and viewers have been respected and allowed to see a real debate with questions on issues and concerns?!

ABC should never be allowed to host another presidential debate again.
Clinton was clearly pleased???  Good Lord help us all if this woman gets her foot in the door...

Come on PA voters!  Kick her to the curb where she belongs...  with the mud she throws so gleefully...
Since Mr.Axelrod won't say it, I will.  ABC News and their two headstrong tabloid pushers suck!  It was not that they were unfair to the candidates (which they were), its that they were unfair to the millions of people watching the debate who actually thought they'd get a chance to hear the differences between a Clinton and Obama presidency and how it would effect them... instead they heard about who mispoke when and if it really meant something more, and who they're acquainted with, and the moderators only defense for wasting so much time was that "this is what the Republicans" will do.  It just shows how out of touch ABC is and they don't realize that Democrats are no longer a "reactive" party but a "proactive" party.  We set the tone and we won't allow petty wedge issues and tabloid gossip nonsense to overshadow the real problems we face in this country.
Every time you think that the Clinton campaign can not stoop any lower, they do.  I am wondering where the questions were for Clinton?  If 52 minutes was spent talking about Obama's two "problems", then 52 minutes should have been spent discussing the Cinton's 2007 tax return, Mark Penn, Bill Clinton's connections and conflicts of interest, claims that she was instrumental in SCHIP, peace in Northern Ireland, Clinton's pardons, and the "Screw them" comment.  Yikes, and that is just a short list.

Obama and Ayers were on a board that helps the South Side of Chicago. What is the matter with you people?

I am on the side of the people.  I do believe that more and more people each day see Hillary Clinton for
the wretched human being that she is.  She has no soul.  The polls on trust and honesty say it all.  Why would anyone vote for someone that they would not trust and do not see as being honest?

There was a clear winner last night, and that was Senator Obama, who tried to bring up the issues that are important to the American people while being asked nonsense questions. Whenever he is hit with questions and comments like this, I admire him more and more for not shooting back at Clinton for the cestpool that she lives in.  The truckloads of controversy surrounding her and her adulterous husband are just waiting to be driven out by the Republicans.
I am disgusted with ABC.  They should be ashamed of themselves.  I am hoping that MSNBC will do the right thing and cover this story for what it truly is.
Thank you Mr. Axelrod. The voters are not only tired of Hillary the assassin, we despise her old politics of hate. I love, and respect Senator Obama more than ever, and that's saying quite a lot. He is a class act I am so proud to support. We will live, or die on the high road. God it would seem is with us, because we are winning. I believe we will soon shout in victory, 'Long live President Obama'!

Pulling for Obama '08
More than 12,000 comments on ABC website; 90% or more are negative against ABC; calls for ABC News, Stephanapolous and Gibson to apologize to the American public.

What a sham debate!
Obama is the kind of president this country needs now. Clinton is a good woman but not the best for this country now may be later. Obama will surely unite this country. I am personally proud of him for not joining Clinton in her desperate aproach in the debate. she acted liked a wounded dog, that leaves the figure in pursiut of the shadow. I will surely Vote for Obama anytime T.
In a perverse sort of way, I think Clinton and her lap dog Stephanopoulos did Obama a favor. She exposed for the country to see the type of gutter fear mongering politics that represent the old neo con politics of the past. I think Clinton demonstrated how self serving she is; how bankrupt her ideas are, and her lack of character.
Despite a whithering three on one attack that threw the kitchen sink, the toilet, the septic tank, and the sewage processing plant at him, he stayed above the muck. It is so easy to take pot shots at Clinton; but I ask, how does that bring jobs to Pennsylvania? Lower the price of gas? End the war in Iraq? Obtain health care for all?
Clinton's supporters should be proud.(not) She and ABC had a golden opportunity; instead they flushed it down the toilet. The American people are smart enough to see that.
"She came in, she wanted to be negative. She was negative. They seem proud of that. That seems to characterize their campaign. I think most people though want something else in our politics.”

man, that statement pretty well sums it up, what clinton and camp think was an overwhelming victory I think will be a huge negative for them, looks to me it is just more hard evidence clinton is the 'business as usual' candidate that she maintains she is not, the same old 'rovian' style politics people are so sick of, I hope the good people PA send her a message next week.

To be president you have to be tough, think on your feet and take the heat.  Obama was befuttled.  Hillary was tough.  The candidates are human and certainly neither perfect.  But regardless of whether the questions were the right ones or not, this debate was important and showed how Obama's slick, polished, rehearsed speeches are that.  He doesn't do so well having to think fast and spontaneous.  I am voting on who can get the job done, not who looks or sounds the nicest doing their job.  I will vote for Hillary.  If Obama is in the general election, I will vote for McCain.  I think Obama is all talk, no action. I know many others who feel the same way.
After the media debaucle last night, I have officially tuned out the election.  I just cannot stand the tone of the negative Clinton's and their spinmisters.  And I will not vote for them under any circumstance as won't the other 5 people in my family who also changed to vote Obama.  We will just not vote as Mc Cain is not an option either.  We were just frustrated with the length of this whole ordeal, but now we are officially "bitter"......as former Republicans who changed to Democrates last year to vote Obama, we believe the Democrats need to wake up and smell the political coffee.  The vast majority of voters dislike the Clinton's, but more importanly are looking for a fundemental change in how governement gets things done.  This primary race has now officially become a real turn off to the people in the middle that will decide this election.  But I suspect that is HRC's strategy at this point, take Obama and the Party down with her since she cannot steal the presidency. If she or Mc Cain are elected Americans deserve what we get.  More of the same old corruption, power and politics, and probably worse.

As for the media, I am sick and tired of spin rather than reporting and investigation passing for truth.  Stick to the facts that can be proven and leave your opinions and speculations to yourselves.  These have no place in journalism unless it is an editorial.
Typical white woman, voted for the Clintons 4 times.  Voting for Obama, sickened by the media doing the same thing they did during the run-up to Iraq.  It's all about the ratings.  For the wealthy talking heads...why support a guy who says he will raise taxes for people earning over $95,000? Even if it will reduce the debt and pay for health care and education.  Experience?  If Obama had been president in 2002, when he gave all the reasons NOT to invade Iraq, our country would be far far better off today.   And he was only 40 at that time.

All of those elite out of touch people at the San Francisco fundraiser were supporting a candidate who would eliminate their tax breaks in order to put more money into those impoverished small towns that he supposedly doesnt understand.

I too thought Obama held his own against some obviously biased questioning.  Even my wife, who is not particularly interested in politics was saying "good answer" when Obama defended himself and repeatedly mentioned how boring Hillary's "same-ol, same-ol" answers were (she would get up and leave halfway through her answers.)  Based on her response, my guess is that independents looking for excitement and good answers might have been won over to Obama last night.  Hillary came off as looking too rehearsed, elitist, and smug.

He definitely showed that he can stand up to focused scrutiny.  If that is what the Clinton campaign is taling about with vetting and ability to face the Republican attack machine, in one man's opinion he has repeatedly shown that he can.
The "debate" was again not a debate as usual.  ABC should be ashamed of what they put up as "moderators".  I don't think this was at all helpful to the people of PA or the rest of the country.  Obama did not shine, but Hillary still came off looking vengeful and deceitful.  He's going to need some coaching to beat McCain in the general.....but I think he can do it.  Just needs practices at these bad debates.
I wish all of you Obama junkies would lay off of Hillary.  first off she had to defend herself the media has turned her into a monster with all of the aniti Hillary propaganda and all of you are buying it.  I dislike Obama immensely  I will not be voting for anyone but Hillary Clinton.  Obama cannot and will not change anything, who are you all kidding!!!
What  a slap in the face to the American people! To watch, that joke of a debate last night was appauling!!And an insult to voters. Is this what we need to be concerned with, whether someone wears a piece of jewelry with a flag on it, means you're more patriotic, or love this country, and it's people? Seems to me that the man in the Whitehouse has worn one since "Day One" and he clearly show he does NOT love this country and it's people. If this is what we've come to think as Americans, I am deeply worried!! Showing you love this country is shown in actions.... NOT in what jewelry you wear! Come on America. let's not blow our chance on a better future for this country, with this totally STUPID UNIMPORTANT STUFF!!!!! Go Obama!!
The questions that were asked of both candidates are the questions I have often thought about and never had answered.  I didn't think either candidate beat up on the other, but were asked about the stuff they themselves have been involved with.

This was light in comparison to other campaigns.

See the Obama supporters whine about treatment of Obama. Obama can't take the heat like Hillary has all year. "What a lynch mob the debate was". Give me a break. He hasn't went through half of what hillary has. And no he is not an honorable man. He is a weak fraud. This is the first time he wasn"t pampered and look how he handled it. Whine on Obamakoolaidians.
That debate last night was terrible. Hillary showed what she is all about...attacks..no action on the teal topics.
Go Senator Obama!!!!!!
I for one am very disgusted with ABC.  I was truly hoping to see two candidates talk abaout something of real suubstance, but thanks to ABC it turned into an Obama bashing tabloid feast for almost a full hour.  What a real shame for ABC.  I think the people of this country are much smarter than some of these "ratings" hungry news pundits and we deserved better than what we got last night.  This was a real joke!
what this debate actually did was galvanized Obama supporters.  I definitely feel if Hillary somehow became the nominee, Obama's supporters wouldn't vote for her.  Her antics on stage last night were dispicable.  Obama supporters need to get together and donate... even if its a dollar, lets put the old goat out of her misery.
Did anyone notice Hillary Clinton's eyes during the debate? She was constantly looking down & scanning around rapidly...kind of tells me that she is trying to be overly cautious and doubts her own words.

I feel sorry for the people of Pennsylvania who were waiting for a debate about substance. The National Enquirer and Star Magazine could have done a better job. They are really jaded and prefer stories about Paris Hilton's dogs & how Britney almost dropped her kid...the media is a joke. That is why Bill Maher, Steve Colbert, and John Stewart become more relevant, it's because they have more credibility.
Two quick questions.  "Is there an understanding amoung TV journalists not to critize their competition, especially when we see the poor quality of work done by George and Charles?"
Second question "How many complaints did ABC receive relative to the quality of the Debate?"  That would be an interesting Big Number to share on Hardball.
David Axelrod was just too nice to have referred to this as an "unusual debate". It was a sham. It was a display of foolishness and ineptitude by ABC, George Stephanopoulos, and Charles Gibson.

These two idiots -George Stephanopoulos, and Charles Gibson- owe the American people an apology.
Obama did not have his MSNBC team serving up soft questions and it showed!

Good job Hillary!
Shame on ABC!  Last night's debate was an insult to the American public.  It was plain to see that it was a set up against Obama.  Your effort to make him look bad actually made him look even more presidential. He was grace under fire!  I'm for OBAMA all the way!
As a at home audience viewer...the first 50 minutes of this looked more like an intorgation of Obama, by the two moderators and Hillary as their witness.  This was not a debate.  It was late in the game that Iraq came up, the economy, Iran and Israel.  No mention of green jobs, health care, gas prices alternative flues, rebuilding our military, taking care of our military as they return injuried and jobless.  This was a joke.  ABC should be ashamed.
Pennsylvania voters should demand more.
As an independent i'm concerned for the country, reading the aforementioned comments. I hope there are many more citizens who are more objective in their politics and realize a vote for the president is serious business, and that a persons true character,as reflected by their associations among other things is very important, most people have no idea who Obama really is. However his associations, with a Black revolutionary church, and a former terrosist, also the views of his wife;paint a very troubling picture.
Questions needs to be asked, and his answers must be examined. I'm sure they'll will be asked more in the general election.
Obama can truthfully claim to have been pinned down by sniper fire.  The moderators showed up to the debate over-armed and trigger happy.  I am used to not trusting the Bush administration.  I am bitter about no longer trusting ABC news.
To ABC

Can you tell me what Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, flag pins and "bitter" has to do with:

1.Economy downward
2.housing crisis
3.100 year in Iraq
4.Over 4000 troops dead
5.80,000 jobs lost in March
6.How to bring our jobs back to USA
7.NAFTA
8.CAFTA
9.Status Quo
10.Health Care for all Americans

ABC you are part of the reason we cant get anywere in this country. All you want to do is distract us from the real issues. ABC you just lost a veiwer......
You Obama supporters are so upset that specific questions on Obama's questionable associations were brought up.  I understand that it's difficult following the kid gloves that have been used by MSNBC and CNN (remember how these were ridiculted by SNL), but really, this is how it is supposed to be.  Obama handled himself very poorly.  These are the questions that should have been asked in November 2007.
Gee Chuck (or is it Sweeney) Todd ... nice hatchet job!  You & George S. should be on Hillary's payroll - I hear she has a few openings.

Why doesn't your article start with the bold headline "CLINTON ADMITS SHE LIED ABOUT BOSNIA"?  Why is that not even worth a mention - it's certainly at least as important as the 50 min. barrage of silly garbage leveled at Obama, if not MORE SO.  "Clinton went on the offensive?"  Yeah, about silly nonsense nobody cares about, and Obama called her out on it.  Where's your reporting about that?

You guys are just taking dictation from the Clinton campaign now, with the mindless hindbrain joy of a rabid dog.  You're addicted to this soap opera BS - we can see the needle hanging out of your arm!  24 hours, 7 days, IT'S JUST NEVER ENOUGH, is it?

Look at the balance of these comments.  Look at all the editorials coming out of PA.  Actual REAL PEOPLE see right through this Hail Mary pass from the Clintons for the toothless BS it is, and you guys are salivating over it like it's the last meal on earth.

Enjoy picking through the bones.  When you're done, We The People will still choose the tall one with the common sense.
