The Clinton women court PA females

Posted: Thursday, April 17, 2008 4:30 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
HAVERFORD, PA -- For the first time since early in the primary season -- an eternity ago for the candidates and the reporters following them -- Hillary Clinton campaigned with both her mother and daughter today.

Chelsea and Dorothy Rodham accompanied the former first lady on campaign swings in Iowa and New Hampshire late in those campaigns in an effort soften and humanize the candidate's image and to appeal to women voters. Both Chelsea and Bill Clinton have been campaigning extensively for the New York senator across this must-win primary state, and it was Chelsea who introduced her mother today.

"My mother and my grandmother have been my role models my whole life, and I can only hope to be as good a mother to my children as my mother's always been to me," the youngest Clinton said.

"I'm just so proud to be here with my mom and my grandmother. It's also a really nice treat, because I spend a lot of time traveling and talking about my mom but not as much time getting to actually see her and sit next to her," she continued, eliciting "awwws" from the overwhelmingly female crowd. Rodham sat on the stage opposite Chelsea, but did not speak.

The event appeared to be aimed at shoring up Clinton's support among women, a vital segment for her. It was notable that it was held at Haverford College, nestled in a tony suburb outside Philadelphia -- the kind of key area that helps determine the outcome in state primaries. Rival Barack Obama has consistently done better among upscale, college-educated voters, but recent polls show he trails Clinton in the state overall with just five days to go before this contest.

"Some of the issues that I've worked on for a very long time are ones that I'm going to pursue as president, because I think that it's time in the 21st century that we really did do more to support families, including the most important work there is, which is caring for one another," Clinton told the group of students, teachers, and members of the community. She made a special point of greeting a group of women from Bryn Mawr, a women's college that is one of the Seven Sisters colleges like her alma mater, Wellesley. The women cheered at the attention.

Clinton said she was proud that first bill her husband signed was the Family and Medical Leave Act and talked about her goal of expanding it to cover more people. She discussed her breast cancer agenda (saying she would like to find a cure within the lifetimes of the young women present), touched on experimenting with paid leave, and said that progress had been made toward equal pay for women while adding that much more needed to be made.

"I have sponsored the Paycheck Fairness Act. We're hoping we can try and get a vote on it by next Tuesday. It'll toughen penalties in enforcing the provisions of the Equal Pay Act," she said. "If we can't get to equal pay in our workplace there's something seriously amiss and I hope that we can turn this into a big issue and get people to understand it's not a woman's issue, it is a fairness issue and it is a family issue."

(It was not clear whether such a vote could happen so soon or whether the senator would be present in the Senate to vote if it were to come up.)

After speaking for more than 20 minutes, Clinton took questions from the audience on how to help families hurt by Hurricane Katrina, immigration, education, and other issues. Throughout, she made jokes and elicited chuckles from the crowd, while repeatedly referring audience members to her website to find out more about her policy proposals.

A funny moment came when she was asked a question about what people who want to canvass for her should tell people when they go door to door?

"Just knock on the door and say 'You know, she's really nice'," the former first lady joked to laughter from the crowd. "Or you could say it another way 'She's not as bad as you think." She then went on to talk about this election being like an extended job interview and asked that canvassers have a serious conversation about her ability to lead.

Why is it that everytime Senator Clinton finishes a particularly despicable attack, she trots out her mother? Is that supposed to make us think she is human or something? Actions speak louder I'm afraid.
You go girl!!! You kicked Obama in the teeth last night and he got what the mainstream media has been ducking all along.  For once he got some tough questions with you.  It showed a side of him that I did not like at all.
Chelsa was with her mom in Bosnia.  One wonders if she tried to correct her?  A lot of questions there.
"She's not as bad as you think".  No, actually she is worse than you think.
Everything that Clinton does is phoney and contrived.  There isn't an ounce of sincerity in her.  I only hope that the people of PA have had a good glimpse of who she truly is.
I live in New York State and I know who she is and I know what she has done.....nothing for the working class here.
I wonder what her mother thought about Bosnia?

Dorothy Rodham please tell former first lady Hillary Clinton was once regarded hard-working and once widely respected lady.  Also enlighten her that minorities as well as women worked very hard over the course of history to make their voices heard and express how they felt.  I am a hardworking woman of faith and I feel that I should be able to think and vote whatsoever way I choose. Tell her that it is alright for the American people to feel a certain way even if its not the way she wants them to feel.  Please, for the American people tell her these things.

Women for Change
Any photos of the event?  I want to make sure all three of them had their flag lapel pins securely in place...since that appears to be a hot-button issue!
Will she cry a tear or Sat or Sunday.  You can't pick your pastor, but you CAN PICK YOUR HUSBAND!!!
Well according to a new Zogby Poll, Clinton and Obama are neck and neck, regardless.  And here's how successful her negative campaign has been:

"Pennsylvanians by a two to one margin (60% to 29%) are more likely to agree with supporters of Obama that voters in Pennsylvania are bitter about their economic situation than with Clinton and critics of Obama that he is an elitist who does not understand working people"

Apparently it's Billary and the media who are the real elitists, convinced we are a bunch of unsophisticated cretins who can always be counted on to salivate on cue.  Conversely, Obama shows his lack of elitism by trusting us to have a clue and give sober grown up consideration to the issues.

Nashville_fan, Don't blame Hillary for the tough questions that Obama had to answer.  Of course, he had no good answers.  About time he received some tough questions.  So far the media has given him a pass and handled him with kid gloves.  Hillary has had the kitchen sink and all the pots and pans thrown at her. Get used to the tough questions for Obama.  He will be vetted and vetted good. If the media doesn't do it in the primaries that are left, then the republicans surely will.

After last night I call Obama the robot--wind him up and put him out there.
Who cares. They should just go and join Cindy and McCain on their bus. They could even exchange recipes.
Tell people she's really nice and not as bad as you think?  Are you kidding?  After last night, and the way she sneered and laughed and stabbed a fellow democrat in the back?  I don't think so!  He showed much more class, as usual.  If class makes you an elitist that I guess he is one.
Hillary "ROVE" Clinton has lost the respect of a national and so has Bill Clinton.  As all your attacks go, it will only hurt you. I pray to god that the final nail is driven in your coffin on 4/22/08.  You and your boy George Stephanopoulos should retire together as both your negatives today are over 60%.  Keep throwing darts. You are only punching holes in your own boat.

I suggest you drop out of the Democratic Race and join McCain on the Republican Ticket.  You have a better chance with John than you do on your own.  If you ROVE tactics steal the nomination. You will lose the General by 20% hands down.  I would have voted for you before last night, but NOT NOW. You blew it Senator.
Hillary showed her intelligence, competence and vision for America last night.  Barack showed us that he's got a little more to learn before he can take this job.  Thank you, Hillary, for all your hard work in trying to make our country better and stronger both here at home and in the world.
And you blue collar folk in Pa. better vote for Hillie or you'll have 3 women yelling "screw you!"
Her favorablity rating is going down...out trots MaMa & Chelsea, more pandering....next, the tears will be flowing.
My oh my how the venom is spewing again, it never stops.  It must be a galling experience being part of campobmana. Still mad Obama at the you suck debate!
His royal highnass must be one the wright kind of leader. God dam America and Hillary too, his motto is loud and clear!
it sounds like the Obamabots are "bitter".Obamabots stop   clinging to Obam. Obama is unelectable.

Clinton 08
let's see where were the questions for Sen. Clinton about the Significant Baggage that she said had been rummage through?

Plenty available but ABC took a PASS!  They should be ashamed!  The debate was a disgrace and ABC should never be allowed to ever, ever, ever hold a devate again in LIFE

Is this the 'make us gag' tour? Bad enough she actually had to go on a 'likeability' tour.

Ask Chelsea if she rode shotgun in Bosnia. Oops.
Sorry, forgot she hasn't spent any time talking to
  the PRESS.
How refreshing...a grandchild who doesn't throw their grandmother under the bus.  Chelsea, you've done a wonderful job on the campaign.
The reason Obama has to outspend Clinton 3-to-1 is because he's being campaigned against at least 4-to-1 (Hillary, Bill, Chelsea, and McCain).

I guess Michelle would count as a half (.5) being that she spends more time at home with their daughters instead of trying to fulfill Barack's ambition of being President.

Nothing to be bitter about Hillary broom lickers. LOL  Your girl is the one with the low rating and trotting out the grown "child" that is Chealsea whose as good a little actress as the cultivated shrew that gave birth to her.

I can't wait for the Clinton circus to surry back under the rock from which they came.
nice to see family take the stage.Proud of all you keep it up.Hillary has the hardest road to travel and I think she is doing it with the grace and class we need to fix this country globally. She doesnt pout if ask same question again and again she instead is glad for the connection. Obama doesnt understand that yet.
Didn't Chelsea say, just a week or so ago, that she backed what her mother said about Bosnia because she was there?  Now, her mother has admitted that she lied.  What does that say about Chelsea?
If voters still cling bitterly and desperately to a prevaricating and disingenuous candidate like Hillary, they have no room to use verbiage like "robots," "Koolaid," or "drama." The truth is, the "decideds" on either side have made up their minds. It's only the undecideds who will be swayed by the frenetic kitchen sinkisms of the Clinton camp, and recent polls suggest that the swaying is going Obama's way.
Man the minute someone questions this guy he starts whining like a little bitch.  You are running for President you should answer whatever questions are thrown at you.  Hey how about an apology once in your life?  Obama will never get elected if he can't take what happened last night.  He chose to sit in this church, he chose to say people cling to their religion because they are bitter about the economy, He chose to sit on the board with the weather underground.  If you think Hillary is tough wait for the republican machine.  You are all Hypocrits.

Hillary 08!!!!
The media is misleading the public.  In polls asking Who won the debate:
ABC reported a total of 57,762 responses.  38,688 for Obama, 14,378 for Clinton, and 4,696 said it was a tie.
MSNBC Poll:  53% Obama  28% Clinton, and 28% said it made them lean toward Obama.
Fox reported 51% for Obama and 49% for Clinton

I'm not sure what the press is trying to convey, but I would advise them to tell Bill Clinton to look on the net for the public response, and not the media that loves Hill and Bill so very much!
The media wants to chew and spit out everything, and I mean every single thing both nominees say, hmmm...where was the media when the Bush administration was blowing smoke up...well you get the point. The media has failed us all, by not focusing on the fabulously messed up situation Bush has gotten us into. That's what the candidates need to be talking about, who cares about word parsing, give me a break.
Since hillary is so used to a flandering husband,it's makes since that she and john McCain would be good friends?
way to raise a woman who feels it's perfectly okay to lie. bang up parenting.
UM SEXISM??? Oh and by the way I'm a woman and I AM offended by this pandering.
Neither candidate is perfect, but Hillary and Bill Clinton are obviously recidivistic liars! A lie got Billo impeached  and George W's lie got on into this warin Iraq. She either lied about Bosnia or is seriously mentally ill ( delusional) because no one "mis-speaks" about nearly  being killed! Can we really afford another liar in the White House? Of course, she won the debate last night. She was not under attack!
For those who think that Obama is unelectable because of who he knows. ( Next we will hear that his 3rd grade teacher is now a convicerd serial kiiller!!) I think that the Clintons are unelectable because of who they are!!
Obama people are not biteer from the debate, it's you that will be bitter when Hillary & Bill take over and sent your jobs away.
All my life I was told how superior white people were. But, to vote for a woman that helped her husband sell you out, became a millionare while you lost your homes & jobs. And you still want her as president.
You rather tear it down before a black can help you! You are no different than the poor Southern and you call them rednecks.
So now you are pimping out your mom as well as your daughter. You can't care too much for Chelsea if you would land in Bosnia under sniper fire. I'm a mom and I know no matter what I would never purposely put my daughter in harm's way. You would put her in danger, but she is off limits to the press. You need to go back to your mansion in NY and get a life.
Hillary, I hope you and you mom and daughter have time to do some shootin' and huntin' in Pennsylvania Chelsea looks like a real gun-totin' young lady. Bill just said he didn't hear you whining. I guess he doesn't listen or pay much attention to you. Hmmm, that really isn't surprising.
Some role model -- Chelsea knew Hillary was lying about Bosnia because she was there and stood by as her "role model" lied to the world!!!!

The "apple does not fall far from the tree"!  Let's hope she never decides to run for President!!
Well isn't that special. That being said, Sybillary is running for mother of the year...
Finally people (and the media) have started to see thru Obamas shallow campaign this is the start of the end for him, thank goodness she kept fighting.....Keep going Hillary the end is in sight
What does a 30 year old unattached female doing CONSTANTLY hanging around with her parents?
If Hillary Clinton cared as much about women as she claims then why did she support NAFTA in the 90's which has shipped approximately 78,200 jobs out of Pennsylvania because of the US-China trade imbalance.
But don't feel alone PA because of that same trade imbalance the good people of Indiana lost 45,200 jobs and counting. (from the Economic Policy Institute)
Based on those numbers alone that would be a grand total of 123,400 jobs lost by the men and women of PA and IN. Men and WOMEN without work that pays comparable to the jobs that moved overseas to China. That's 123,400 men and WOMEN without healthcare, the means to pay for affordable childcare, lower standard of living...how has this been good for women and their families???

Good paying union jobs support families well and provide them the means to reach for the American Dream and yet everyone will cast their vote on April 22nd for the very same woman who has and will continue to sell their jobs out from under them to the lowest bidder!!! Make your choice wisely and in the best interest of your family and your futures.
Good luck!!
Frankly, I'm shocked that Hillary didn't have one of her touching, tears-in-her-eyes family stories ready about how she and her mom used to sit around crocheting American Flag afghans while listening to Billy Graham on the radio, right after she and her cottage-building granddad got back from duck hunting.
Poor Chelsea...she is going to have millions in therapy bills throughout her lifetime...having to publicly defend her sleazebags-for-parents. Of course she's going to sit there on stage with her grandma... she has to ride shotgun for her mom in case of sniper fire. And what must Mrs. Rodham think of her lying, phony daughter? Some day, a Doris Kearns Goodwin will have ample fodder for a thick book analyzing the corrupt and psychologically shaky Clinton "empire."
I know CNN and MSNBC have been criticizing ABC about the debate. But finally someone asked Obama a hard question. I heard him say today this would be his last democratic debate. Either he thinks he has got it in the bag or he is mad because he got asked some hard questions. If he thinks this is bad, IF he wins the democratic nomination, this debate will look like tiddlywinks.
I once liked Hillary Clinton. But even if she wins the nomination, I will never vote for her. She has shown her true colors -- that she will lie, spew hate and venom at Barack and ultimately help the Republicans win in November. I'm donating more money to Barack right at this moment because he HAS to win for the betterment of this country.
Please spend more time with your mother and child. Years from now it will be more important to you than winning an election.
I am ASHAMED of Hillary Clinton.. Thank God the dirt has started flying her way! "Screw You" is a nice catch phrase and now that it has been confirmed by more than three people I believe it. Obama may not throw dirt but he can't keep us from doing it anymore. The unelectable one is the one who was fired for unethical behavior that warranted disbarment, the one who couldn't pass the bar except in Arkansas, the one who lied and lied and lied about Bosnia, Ireland, and sooo much more. How about a woman who knew and didn't care about a Monica scandal? She probably watched! Never mind you have to have warm blood to care. This whole dispicable mess she has insisted on will make a good movie if it ends the way it should.
It was a good debate.  All of the important issues were covered including character.  Apparently character is the one issue that Barack Obama and his supporters voiced objection.  It was fine with Obama when MSNBC laid into Hillary Clinton with tough questions.  It was fine when Obama called Clinton a liar at one debate.  It was fine when Clinton kept getting the first question at yet another debate.

Clinton has shown that she is a tough, political fighter -  apparently too tough for Senator Obama and his friends in the media.

The criticisms of Charlie and George were way out of bounds.  Obama's sarcasm today displayed all the class that he has which regretably is very little.
Please God, do not let this bitter old woman win. For all women, she DOES NOT represent who our first female president should be. Our first female president should not have to play this dirty and be a total b**ch to win. I'm ashamed of this woman. I can wait for our first female President to have a lot more Honor than Hillary Clinton. She was right about one thing, you CAN pick your pastor, but you can also pick your HUSBANDS. Bill Clinton brought ENOUGH shame to our country in the 1990s. He doesn't deserve to set foot back in the White House and Hillary is the one with BAD JUDGMENT. Not the role model for MY daughter. Kathleen Sebulius for President 2012. Obama 2008
No matter what your opinion is about HRC I think it’s great that they get to do this together. It meant a lot to me to work with my father.
