Obama: Here come the Ayers stories...

Posted: Friday, April 18, 2008 9:11 AM by Mark Murray

Here are the predictable Weather Underground stories. The LA Times: "The evidence linking Obama, who was born in 1961, to the two former militants, now in their 60s, remained thin, despite the appearance of a slickly produced, anonymously issued five-minute video titled ‘Obama's Terrorist Connections’ on YouTube that sought to exploit the alleged tie. Obama and Ayers moved in some of the same political and social circles in the leafy liberal enclave of Hyde Park, where they lived several blocks apart. In the mid-1990s, when Obama was running for the Illinois Senate, Ayers introduced Obama during a political event at his home, according to Obama's aides. Ayers, a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, later contributed $200 to Obama's state campaign.”

“Obama and Ayers met a dozen times as members of the board of the Woods Fund of Chicago, a local grant-making foundation, according to the group's president. They appeared together to discuss juvenile justice on a 1997 panel sponsored by the University of Chicago, records show. They appeared again in 2002 at an academic panel co-sponsored by the Chicago Public Library."

The Boston Globe also does the Ayers story -- but from the how-it-became-news angle. "The news that Obama held a campaign event at Ayers's home in 1995, and served with Ayers on a Chicago community board, was either damning or innocuous, a worthy disclosure or a sure sign of the decline of political journalism. But the Obama-Ayers story itself is a case study in the ways that news jumps between blogs and traditional media, the lingering power of network news, and the persistence of Internet conspiracy theories. In fact, it was hard yesterday to tell which got more scrutiny: the link between Obama and Ayers, or the link between ABC's George Stephanopoulos and Sean Hannity of Fox News."

The AP does its own fact check of the Weather Underground connections. "Clinton's implication that Ayers made hurtful comments connected with the terrorist attacks is wrong. By coincidence, a story about Ayers and what he called his fictionalized memoirs appeared in The New York Times on the day of the attacks." On Obama's accusations: "Obama correctly sketched out the details of Bill Clinton's acts in the case. However, senior Obama strategist David Axelrod went too far Thursday when he said the two cleared by President Clinton had killed people. They were not convicted of that."

"The Service Employees International Union launched an ad that hits the hot-button issue of record gas prices and highlights Obama's energy proposals and his stand of not accepting campaign cash from federal lobbyists."

Hey, Paul Krugman and David Brooks can now agree on one thing: They both don’t care much for Obama. Krugman’s critical piece today isn’t too surprising. "[L]et’s hope that once Mr. Obama is no longer running against someone named Clinton, he’ll stop denigrating the very good economic record of the only Democratic administration most Americans remember."

Brooks’ criticism is a bit more surprising, given his earlier praise of Obama. But remember that Brooks has always been a BIGGER fan of McCain than Obama. “General election voters are different from primary voters. Among them, Obama is lagging among seniors and men. Instead of winning over white high school-educated voters who are tired of Bush and conventional politics, he does worse than previous nominees. John Judis and Ruy Teixeira have estimated a Democrat has to win 45 percent of such voters to take the White House. I’ve asked several of the most skillful Democratic politicians over the past few weeks, and they all think that’s going to be hard.”

“A few months ago, Obama was riding his talents. Clinton has ground him down, and we are now facing an interesting phenomenon. Republicans have long assumed they would lose because of the economy and the sad state of their party. Now, Democrats are deeply worried their nominee will lose in November. Welcome to 2008. Everybody’s miserable."

Like Clinton did, NBC/NJ’s Aswini Anburajan reports, Obama appeared on the Colbert Report last night, filming a taping with the mock conservative talk show host at East Carolina University in Greenville. Colbert quizzed Obama on last night's debate, saying that he had to "take issue" with Obama for calling the questions "manufactured political distractions."

Obama told him, "Well, Stephen I think the American people are tired of these political games and petty distractions.”

To which Colbert replied: "Sir, speaking for the news media, speaking for the news media, we are not tired of it. It allows us to ask the same questions over and over again. It's a lot less work." It was the only funny line of the entire exchange, which proceeded to have Obama repeat a part of his stump speech about why "distractions" didn't help Americans get health care, better jobs, etc.

Go read Ayer's blog response to all of this.  The problem isn't what ayers did 40 years ago, its who he is now and who he has always been.  From an independant's point of view, it seems libs get a pass on their associations with "fringe" "radical" folks.   But if you are associating with them (not merely receiveng their endorsements) but inviting them and participating with them in their causes, can these people still be considered on the "fringe" or "radical".  If a person is asked to "introduce" you at a political event, aren't you standing in agreement at least in part with their politics?  This guy Ayers is not just a former terrorist, he is currently a anti capitalist marxist.  Is that what Obama wants or agrees with?  I saw Olberman once berate some Republican for associating with Chuck Colson, who actually says what he did was wrong and served a full prison sentence.  What a double standard.
I was 7 years old when Osama attacked on 9/11. Is it okay to hang around with OSAMA now? OBAMA - you are know by your associations too.
Obama answered the questions, but it was hard  not to expose their ridiculousness in doing so. Why can't we get John McCain on MSNBC to be interviewed by Keith Olbermann?
We Americans deserve answers to all those questions asked in the last debate about Obama's dubious relationships with men who hate or damn America, after all he is being considered for the Presidency of the United States of America and whoever is elected will be the Commander in Chief responsible for the security of our country. We didn't get clear answers and we will continue to ask the tough questions, but in our mind the main question still remains:
Does Obama love or hate America?
They blew up buildings people. Howard Wolfson in is follow-up from the ABC made the statement that "If Obama wants to associate himself with people who set BOMBS to buildings and said they didn't do enough he should be questioned by it." There's a difference between setting bombs to buildings and being Timothy McVie.  They didn't intend to kill people although they killed two of their own. Its like those people who set bombs to abortion clinics because they don't believe in Abortions.  They didn't mean to hurt people just destroy what they believed against.
In politics, it's always the losing side who yells that something is a "non-issue".
What I still can't understand is why you anti-obama people keep digging on whatever he did in the past or did not do. how are you suppose to go forward while still living in the past? he is a wise and intelligent and educated man, period! he knows america's history..he  is an american! he is a christian!i dont care whatever his ex pastor says! i dont care what his wife says! what his father said! what his mother said! whats important is what he believes now and his strategy to change this country and dig it out of its technical economic recession!stupid abc is asking all these unrelated questions about his relationship with other people!who cares who funds him? which president in america was solely funded by simple honest means?all you anti-obama people think about now and the future. If obama fails to implement his plan and strategy as he states..then you can impeach him or do whatever you want to do. but for now..stop asking unrelated stupid questions!
For all you Clinton idiots saying we cant vote for someone who doesn't have integrity or has to held accountable for what their associates say look at your candidate.Lets not bring up Mark Penn and The CAFTA thing again. According the the people (check the polls) she is the most untrustworthy candidate out there. Talk about lack of worthiness to run the country. YOU CANT HOLD SOMEONE ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT SOMEONE DID WHEN THEY WERE 8 YRS OLD THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE THE CAPACITY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED LET ALONE CONDONE THE BEHAVIOR. As far as serving on the board it wasn't like they were buddies drinking beer and going to movies together. It was a charitable organization. Lets not forget Cindy McCain was a drug addict and STOLE drugs from her organization. Clinton pretty much said she lied about Bosnia and lets not talk about the shady things the Clintons knew or did while in office. (Paul, Vince Foster, Monica ect). So if were going to be holding candidates accountable for outsiders then lets talk about Clintons associates and hold her responsible for all those people.
Barack better be careful, they will find out that he messed in his training pants!!! Get a life, people. That Mr. Ayers is now a professor at college, is on a board of a charity organization that was founded in the late 50's, and has helped thousands of people, is trivial, right?  And oh my god, Barack and he were at the same place!! 40 years later. Keep up the good work. If you are going back 40 years, where did Bill Clinton go during the Vietnam war, or how about your president? Where did he go and what did either of them do? And who did Hillary say "screw em" to?
In a conversation with my neighbor while setting out trash barrels we talked politics. Her military son had been in Bosnia. She said, "we have to bring our boys home from Iraq. I want to vote for Obama but I question his patriotism." My reply: "being on a Charity board was much different than actively working with an Underground Group. What Obama actually did was positive community work in South Chicago. Patriatism comes from the bottom up as our National strength must include our poorest members. Wearing or not wearing a pin means nothing compared to really helping the poor have a better life.
