New Pa. poll has Clinton holding lead

Posted: Sunday, April 20, 2008 9:11 AM by Chuck Todd

From NBC's Chuck Todd
A new MSNBC/McClatchy/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette poll of Pennsylvania indicates things are staying fairly competitive in the Pennsylvania Dem primary.

The poll of 625 likely Dem primary voters was conducted Thursday and Friday and showed Clinton leading Obama 48-43%. Considering the 4% margin of error, it means Clinton's lead is inside the margin.

Click here to read the entire MSNBC/McClatchy/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette poll.

Still, the poll is consistent with what the campaigns and other reputable polls have been showing and that is Clinton getting close to 50% and Obama struggling to climb over 45%.

So what happens on Tuesday? Well, let's take a look at the undecided vote. Going inside the poll's demographics, one finds the highest undec. totals in the more rural parts of the state; that's not good news for Obama. In the so-called "T" region of the state (i.e., almost everything between Philly and Pittsburgh), Clinton leads 51-37 with 11% undecided; this is one of the few demographic groups sporting double-digit undecided.

Two other interesting cross-tabs with high undecideds also indicate the potential that undecided vote will break for Clinton. Among bowlers (24% of the electorate) and gun owners (38% of the electorate), Clinton leads big. She's up 54-33 among bowlers and 53-28 among gun owners; There were 13% undec. among bowlers and 17% undec among gun owners.

So while the poll shows Clinton with a narrow lead (and arguably a narrowing lead), the clues inside the numbers indicate this is her race to lose and that her lead could expand. Should this race end up as close as this poll indicates (i.e. 5 points or less), then this means many of these undec. potential Clinton voters decided to stay home; If the come to the polls, she could see her lead climb to over 5 points.

And that's the game Tuesday, not if Clinton will win, but how big will her victory be.  She'd like to net more than 200K in the popular vote which she would only get with both a large turnout (approx. 2 million total) and a 10 point victory.

5 points 10 points, it doesn't matter which, equates to an Obama win because she needed a 20-25 points win to make up any real ground.  She will be further behind in the percentages and will bow out after he cleans her clock on May 6.
As Obama have said a number of times, it is hard to bring about change and the PA race is just that. The national poles are going for Obama, Clinton's superdelagates are joining the change party and it is clear the media is struggling to fight this change. Like the abc debate, nothing can stop this change. America is America because of the diffcult changes in the past - this is one such move. God Bless Obama and God Bless America.
One problem with your figures, Chuck. The largest increase in registrations are young people under 30. A huge chunk of them don't have landlines, as is the trend. Pollsters can't poll cellphone users. So that demographic is seriously under polled. Now I don't have numbers for all folks under 30. What I do have is that college students are breaking 4 to 1 in favor of Obama... and nearly all of those only have cellphones. And college students are much more likely than ever to participate. THAT is not good news for the Clinton camp.

One other thing... bowlers? Really? They actually have numbers on bowlers? Judas Priest!
I hope the good folks of PA turn out BIG for Hillary.

Obama cannot win in November and we need to have Hillary going head-to-head and toe-to-toe with McCain.  I think Hillary can beat McCain.  I am sure that Obama cannot beat McCain.  By the time he gets vetted good folks will then know the real Obama and realize that he is not the person we need in the presidency.

hey everyone did u hear bout the hyjacking of obamas site yesterday?
heres the story from kos, seems the media doesnt think its important

Chuck, will this be another case where Clinton "wins", such as in Texas, but Obama walks away with the most delegates which for some reason doesn't count as a win.
This is a pretty good summary of the situation in PA.  My take is that this time the undecided voters will stay home because even if they were to break towards HRC their votes will not make much of a difference.

In OH, they turned out because they thought that would have allowed HRC to remain in the race.  In PA, they won't bother because the idea that HRC can't win the nomination has sunk in.

The undecided voters who will show up at the polls on Tuesday are more likely to be BO's supporters; therefore, BO could actually win PA by one of two percentage points.

Regardless of whether my analysis is correct, it will be obvious to even HRC that she cannot win this nomination after NC and IN vote on May 6th.

Didn't anyone see HRC bowl on Ellen?  Just as bad.  Do we want a President downing shots? HRC grew up priveleged-not Obama.  Who is kidding who?  Look at the facts!
Obama 08
Chuck, why don't you and Andrea Mitchell go campaign for Hillary. You two are trying hard to be neutral, but it's showing.
Where are the stats on which way the basketball players in PA are voting? That could be decisive.
We need a president that loves and is proud of our country, a president that has compassion and understanding for rural America and the challenges we are facing in this troubling economic times;we need a president that can take the national and international political pressures, we need a president that is mature, strong experienced and determined.

The choice is now clear and the polls reflect that Hillary Clinton is the best choice for the democratic party.

               HILLARY 2008
Keep trying to stave off the inevitable.  62-38 at the bare minimum for her to even legitimately remain in the race.  Get real people.  You all would have kicked Obama out long ago if he was in her position.  Actually, more than likely, he would have gracefully bowed out in looking out for the party's interests before his own long before now simply because he has way more class than any other campaign or media outlet.  Say hello to the next POTUS Barack Obama.
You can do it Hillary. We are bringing all the neighbors and friends we can to the polls tues.It is your state and the elitest may try all he wants to pretend but it is demeaning and we arent buying. He has said all along how his followers are the rich but the ones I know say they are for you Hillary cause they like the winning side. They may tell people anything they want before but they will be with you too Hillary. We are a proud state and loyal to our own.If thats bad than to bad.I love our life weather good or bad.We have neighbors we can count on and we help all we can.We meet at the turkey shoots and our word is our bond.Church isnt just once a week with us its a fellowship in best and worse times. Our church teaches love not hate and thats love of country not the other. We are and have been proud of our country and trust Hillary is the one to bring the changes we need to make this great country even better. You go girl we are with ya.
So Clinton is "getting close to" 50% (she's 2% away) and Obama is "struggling" to get to 45% (he's 2% away)!  Amazing how the way you phrase something can make it sound!!!  Gee, I wonder if this was on purpose.
Leadership:

As defined from the encyclopedia
1. The ability "to get people to follow voluntarily."
2. Those entities that perform one or more acts of leading.
3. The ability to affect human behavior so as to accomplish a mission designated by the leader.

Leadership as defined (summarized by me) that I learned as a military officer.
Leadership is the art of “Influencing” a group of people in such a way as to obtain their “loyal” confidence and cooperation in order to accomplish the mission

Everyone has their opinions and thoughts.  I would only ask you which of the two do “you” believe is demonstrating true leadership.

I spent 12 years in the military, love my country, and will still fight and die for it.  But I know whom I’m voting for.
No president can accomplish anything by themselves they mush have good people around them.  Who do you think inspires more?

You be the judge

Well despite polls anything can happen and I am still hoping and praying that Pennsylvania give Senator Obama a win however narrow in Pennsylvania so that we can start to bring the fight for the nomination to a close.  I am worried about the faulty voting machines and Clinton's ties to all of the party leaders in Pennsylvania... just don't trust them.. while they strongly decry anything they consider tampering with their caucus goers etc.  I wonder at the truthfulness and accuracy of our primaries.  And her camp most clearly has tampered with caucus voters... in Nevada handing out instructions that told them to close the doors early... the letter in Texas that told them not to let an Obama supporter act as secretary etc.  They are hypocrites when it comes to this stuff.  I don't think that we fully understand how much restraint Senator Obama has demonstrated in not going after the Clintons... I think it has been tremendous and a demonstration of his desire to change the way we approach politics... my be hurting him and slowing his nomination... but I applaud him for trying.
Please, do not undestimated Senador Clinton, all the negativity, all that she has taken week after week, month after month has make her nothing but a even stronger. When I listen to her I hear REAL SOLUTIONS, she may not give this beautyful and musical speeches, but she talks substance, specific solutions.
My vote goes to HILLARY CLINTON!!!!!THE REAL CHANGE
It will be very interesting to see where the chips fall in PA, I respect their right as Americans to vote, and I hope their voice will be heard(who can doubt it)but I have to admit, I find the heavy focus by the media and candidates on the outcome in 'the big states' and the over-weighting of this and the other remaining primaries to be getting a bit old. The longer these primaries go on, the less the earlier vote seems to count. Many many people have already voted, and it seems to me their votes have been as important as PA. Let's get these last primaries over with and pick a nominee, even if it's not the one I'd prefer, and focus on beating McCain, not dynamiting the Democratic party's credibility to smithereens and fragmenting the base into little pre-defined groups that all have to be sucked up to. Gun owners, gays, activists, people of faith, bowlers??? the bowler demographic?? Yeesh. We're all Americans and we need a president that will see us that way.
Although the two candidates are similar on many issues, Hillary Clinton is more moderate in a couple of very important areas, especially on energy policy.  While both recognize the importance of conservation and development of alternative energy sources, in interviews with the Houston Chronicle, only Clinton also recognized the need for more domestic oil production in the Gulf of Mexico in addition to help alleviate an inevitable supply shortage as China and India increase their demand as expected.  In fact, not doing so could head us for an economic disaster in the future as supplies tighten.  Alternative sources all have various problems which keep them from becoming the lion's share of our energy needs any time in the next couple decades.  Already we are seeing in the news, massive food shortages in parts of the world caused by the tripling of rice prices due to the increased use of land for biofuels.  Wind takes large swaths of real estate and poses some risks to wildlife.  Solar panels take energy to produce and are so far, still expensive.

Also, only Clinton's health plan recognizes the importance of universality to get enough healthy people involved to pay for the illnesses of the less healthy, and to increase preventive care.  Her plan is designed to limit costs to at most 10 percent of income, which would be a reduction to many people who want insurance.  But it would not allow shortsighted citizens to opt out, only to find they can't get coveage when they need it as is often the case today.

Finally, Hillary Clinton's floor speech on the Iraq war vote shows the kind of thinking I would like to see in a Commander-in-Chief.  It outlines a specific course of action designed to greatly minimize the chances of war, while increasing the pressure and world support for inspections.  I thought it was excellent.  References:

I'm an Obama supporter but it looks like Clinton by 7-8 points. This is all so futile but gender politics wins over realism (Obama will win, eventually). I hope that the realism of the state of our nation will be more influential than flag pins and Rev Wright come the fall. Not if FOX News and ABC can help it.
Most gun owners are going to be inherently close-minded -- fearful, even paranoid, folk. Change makes them nervous. Bowlers seem like they would be a bit more receptive to something new, but perhaps staring down those lanes night after night narrows their vision. It makes sense that these two demographics would support Clinton, whose politics are stagnant, fear-based, and repetitive. I will be glad when PA is over -- the state doesn't deserve the attention it garners simply because it harbors a disproportionate number of ignorant back-enders.
Please tell me you're kidding that they segmented the sample into "bowlers." Gun owners I can see, but bowlers?? As if people make their decisions based on affinity for bowling-heaven help us. I cannot wait for this process to be over. The media has descended to the level of kindergarteners.
Could the small town theory held or "mentioned" by Senator Obama hold any weight in North Carolina?  It seems that people here in North Carolina are not paying attention to Sen. Obama's campaign.  However, their is a clandestine movement here in North Carolina, decried from the pulpit, for registered republicans to change their party affiliation so they can vote for Sen. Clinton in the May 6th primary.  This is reinforcing a notion that she will be easier to beat in the general election against Sen. McCain.
For all that have not noticed this, including Hillary herself,......SHE HAS ALREADY LOST THE DEM NOMINATION!!!!!!What is so freaking hard for her & her supporters to understand. The constant attacks on Obama will not change that fact. What you fail to realize is that back in OH & TX Hillary needed to win 60% or more of the vote in the remainder states to even get close & the reality is she's not gonna do it.The superdelegates wouldn't dare turn over the pledge delegates or popular vote because truth is Obama won both the honest way without trying to steal it.So from here on out the kitchen sink tactics are only ruining the democratic party. So GET LOST Hillary so we can tackle SENILE WAR MONGER MCCAIN!!!!!
Point 1...of course this is Senator Clinton's primary to lose.  It always was.  She's the brand name in this entire contest and in Pennsylvania she has the backing of Governor Rendell's political machine.

Point 2...Define "substantial victory"...all the polls opened with Senator Clinton leading by 20 points in Pennsylvania.  If the margin of victory for Senator Clinton is single digits on Tuesday is that really a "substantial victory"?  And, please, no spin...with a pledged delegate lead of 166 and an overall delegate lead at 140 will a single-digit vitory be enough of a difference in this contest?

Point 3...I've read plenty of Clinton supporters crowing that Senator Obama can't "close the deal".  Doesn't that argument also apply to Senator Clinton?  She opened as the favorite.  Where's her ability to close the deal?  If you open at a 20-point lead (as with Ohio and Texas) what does it say when your opponent can cut that lead to single digits?  Remember, she opened as the favorite and now has to play catch-up.
It's truly a shame that many of the voters in PA can't see that Hillary is not in this race for the people. She's in it for her own self serving needs. She's turned off so many voters across the country. Her slash and burn political games have destroyed her legacy.
So what is the impact on the nominating process when Mrs Bill nets 120k votes and 3 delegates ? A Vernon Jordan phone call to the Clintons ?
My mind is made up...

As I've read this blog I see a pattern and it's helped me make my choice on Tuesday.

What's the difference between an Obama supporter and a Clinton supporter?

Based on this blog, an Obama supporter doesn't like Senator Clinton while a Clinton supporter doesn't like the Obama supporters.

Don't you see the fundamental difference?

I see Obama supporters making comments about Senator Clinton herself while the Clinton supporters repeatedly refer to Obama supporters as Obamabots, Obamapods, etc.

Clinton supporters, you seem to have more to say about Obama supporters than Obama himself.

...and I've made my choice...

Obama '08!
Mr Todd I am glad to see that you are back at work the bias postings by Mr Montanaro was unreal these past 2 days.I am an Obama supporter but I like fair reporting of both sides. Not just in favor of Obama or Clinton.I also feel that Mr Montanaro is guilty of censorship of pro Obama view points. I posted 7 comments as soon as the subjects posted om the site only 1 made it on the blogs. Chuck I dont think this should be an all Obama good news blog , but it should not be an all Clinton one either.New reporting should try to be as nonbias as possible and if that is to hard to do the reporter should state that he or she is giving a biased oppion not to confuse people. Stating that I believe that a lot of First Read fans are dissappointed with Mr Montanaros one sided view in front of a primary to be so onesided is unfair. No one has posted the story of Hillary in a room of her supporters throwing Move-On.org under the bus since they support Obama, the same Move-On.org that was support for her when Bill had his issues in the White House.Nor has more been said about Hillarys new stance on Iran and her Umbrella Policy in the Middle East against Iran.In all what I am trying to say Chuck is have your folks report it a little less bias. Please dont let this become an all Hillary blog.
It's just SO preposterous how MSNBC has accepted Republican framing of this election--I really thought it was a joke that they broke down the vote in terms of who bowls, hunts, and drinks beer.  As an Obama supporter, I see very clearly that the media is stacked against him.  I used to think Chuck Todd was more rational, less partisan, but it seems clear that he has shifted to building up McCain and Clinton's candidacies.
I'm just so sick of the Clintons, I wish the people of Pennsylvania would just vote her out.
Your heading for this is very misleading.  In the last 48 hours, you guys have put quite a few misleading headlines on things concerning Senator Obama....
Just Saying, Jacksonville, FL (Sent Saturday, April 19, 2008 7:29 PM

Chuck another person That sees the way Mr Montanaro has taken this blog and used it for his Pro-Clinton purposes.
Chuck, this is pretty specious reasoning.  Neither Kerry nor Gore won in the T, yet both carried Penn.  The key battleground is the suburbs around the urban centres.
I would be curious to know what the break down of polling numbers tell us about the real contest. The contest for pledged delegates. Could you break down some polling data to analyze any possible net delegate gain for Clinton. While the popular vote is marginally interesting, I would be curious to know if Clinton can make a significant net gain in pledged delegates. I haven't seen anyone doing that kind of projection who believes she can do much better than +12. In other words, for all this alleged drama what we have is no significant movement in the one metric that actually wins the nomination: pledged delegates.
Bowlers?  That's a metric?  Next it'll be the guy /gal you want to have a beer with...the meme that was pushed endlessly by the nattering class in the last two elections..Our kids are being killed and injured in a senseless invasion, our economy is suffering, we've been endlessly  lied to by a corrupt administration and you zero in bowlers?
We deserve(d) the president we get.
MSNBC et al distorts this so-called "close" primary race to continue for their clownish infotainment ratings.

Don't we NEED a President who is embarassingly smart and focused as Jon Stewart said.  Bowling? Jogging? Chopping wood?   NO THANKS, not this time.
Let's be honest. Just like Texas, if Clinton wins by 1 vote, the media will tout "Huge win for Clinton" to keep this game going. There is an obvious bias in the press towards self interest.

We all know Clinton will win by 15. Reason, Rendell & the establishment who truly understand PA are Clinton supporters and will deliver their people using old school methodologies. Secondly, after 6 weeks of marking by Obama, the undecided will all go to Clinton.

The press is saying 10pts or more is a Clinton win, but they know it will be 15pts or more.

There is a 3rd partner in this dance, and she is the media.
Voters don't like to be told what to do by you guys in the media.
Hillary I think people and Supers are seeing who is best for this country. We all know Obama always outspends you 4 to 1 and loses but he doesnt get it. It isnt the money it is the perosn. You cannt always buy everyone. We see the disdain, threats and mean talk when you get a super to stand with you. This is not negativity?? This isnt what the people want. I think the supers were picked that have the strength to voice there choice. Obama has been pressuring these people and I have seen him threaten them. He is the one said those states you won should have the supers for you. We dont want a pres. that rules with threats or the people with him either. This sounds more like the sounds of Dictatorship. He says his living in other country makes him better than Hillary or McCain. Look at the country he is talking about.Blood runs in the street churches burned . Hillary you keep going please. We are with you.His arrogance when questioned and brush it off and the bird to us might be cute to his people not to us and we vote too.
It is going to get worse if anyone was watching Meet the Press this morning. Geoff Garin just got taken to the woodshed by David Axelrod.
What Clinton/Obama won't say but infer is that RACE really does matter in the end -  White voters for Clinton 'cause she is White, and Black voters for Obama because he is Black.  I thought the Democratic is the Pary of Unity and "Liberal" ideas.
The problem, Chuck, is that even if she wins by the 5%, she will LOSE delegates because of the proportional distribution. You know who told me that? YOU. A month ago, you were saying that she has almost no chance of winning the delegate count. Now, even though Obama has picked up more supers than she has, and her 20+ lead in the polls in PA has shrunk to almost within the margin of error, we aren't hearing the same message from a month ago. What's up?
Assume a 10 point victory for Hillary - it means nothing to the end result, unless she picks up about 30 net delegates. The media (or the Clinton campaign) has inserted the popular vote total into discussions about what will motivate the super delegates. Attached to that, media comments often imply that super delegates WANT to support Clinton, but need a justification to do so. That's simply not true. Those who wanted to support Hillary did so when her nomination seemed inevitable. Actually super delegates, while they want to win the White House, are more interested in who will have the better coat-tails. Across the country ... south, midwest, mountain states, northwest ... that's Obama. Super delegates from those places want to support Obama and they will. As far as the popular vote discussion goes, there are too many ways to count it for it be important. For instance, Obama got approximately 120,000 vote margin from the Texas caucuses - but that shows up in no one's tally. Other caucuses go uncounted.

The pain and the spending go on, but the result was clear on Feb. 5 ... Obama is the next President of the United States.
The GOP wants Hillary to be the nomination...
Easy to beat with the NAFTA lies and Bosnia forgetfulness...Makes McCain a saint...Why would every GOP endorers want Hillary...catch-a-clue...
Is totally beatable by McCain ticket...That's the
"experience counter"...Hillary is nulled...
Okay... seriously?  MSNBC is now polling BOWLERS?  Have you completely lost it?  When you do things like this, you are part of the problem.  Please get a grip.  MSNBC is one of the few news stations I can actually bear to watch; but if you keep doing things like this you're going to lose me.  I need at least a modicum of gravitas.  The tiniest little bit of journalistic integrity from the station as a whole.  Please try -- I'm actually begging you.  Forget about the damn bowlers and concentrate on things that actually matter.
Too many undecided? It can get kinda confusing out there:

I not think he is an elitist but his recent comment certainly was.
I do not think she lies but she mis-speaks on many issues.
I do not think he is too old but his views don’t reflect current reality.
If there are any undecided Pennsylvanians, please look carefully at the most important issue: The Clinton loyalists are endorsing OBAMA. Please, before you cast your vote, research why that is happening! They know much more than we do...

Obama is truly out for the good of the country; look at his record for a moment and ignore her "claims" - remember, she HAS to make him look unelectable. Could he really be anti-American if he has spent his whole life working for the downtrodden? think it through...
This just goes to show what a RACIST state that Pennsylvania is and always has been for as long as I can remember. Obama will do well in Philadephia which has a large African/American population but thats about it!!!
The "guilt by association" campaign by Clinton and the Republicans is a clear failure.  Your polls show it and the election results will show it.  Clinton is not getting the juice she needs.  The McCarthy tactics are for LOSERS.

People only fall for McCarthy tactics when there's a "red menace" or some threat that creating real fear.  Republicans won't have it easy generating fear while at the same time they don't want to focus on the real threat in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
If you AMERICANS think Mr. Obama is not good enough for you, please send him to FRANCE. We will take him and keep him as our leader forever!
