Scaife endorses Clinton

Posted: Sunday, April 20, 2008 12:12 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
Richard Mellon Scaife (of right wing conspiracy fame) endorsed Clinton in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary. Scaife owns the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which threw its backing to Clinton today. It cites Clinton’s “political courage” in particular for sitting down with its editorial board. (There, she famously injected herself into the Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy.)

The paper said, in part: "Clinton's decision to sit down with the Trib was courageous, given our longstanding criticism of her. That is no small matter: Political courage is essential in a president. Clinton has demonstrated it; Obama has not."

The Clinton campaign also says it has opened a new office in Terre Haute, Ind.

Endorsed by the mouthpiece of the Right Wing Conspiracy.
Just doing their part for McCain.
More proof that Clinton is a Republican.  She's been cozying up to McCain since South Carolina.  She's been using Republican talking points in going after Obama and actively sought Scaife's endorsement.

That last point is key.  This isn't an endorsement that she didn't seek and will "denounce and reject."  She wanted this endorsement, from one of the most conservative voices in the media, and now she got it.  Add this to Hillary's neo-con notion of the "nuclear umbrella" and we've got a wolf in sheep's clothing.
The new office will be a waste of time and money; Obama already controls the "high ground" in this campaign.
This "endorsement" was clearly a strategic move to try to drag out the Dem primary season, to the benefit of the GOP.
Frank Rich articulates perfectly my own reaction to the ABC debate, and to today's media in general. I don't care if some newspaper publisher endorses Hillary, today's pundits and "experts" have shown themselves to be out of touch with America 2008. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/opinion/20rich.html?hp
This political sociopath would sit down with the 'bird flu', to pry loose a vote. Please spare us your sanctimony Tribune Review. The deal was, you expected 50% more sales for your rag over the Wright scandal, and you both hoped to bring down Obama.

Courage, is a black man running for the Presidency of the US with a name like Barack Hussein Obama.
How stupid is this?  Very!

She chose to come sit down with them despite their harsh critism of her...blah, blah, blah!

I am afraid of spiders and I know certain things that must get done on the outside of my home.

A gutter newspaper for a gutter candidate!  We are passed silly season.  So what would they have done if she didn't come to the interview?  My point exactly.  Give me a break!
The circle is now closed. The man who attempted to destroy her husband in the 90's has endorsed her in 2008. I hope she appreciates the irony.
Hillary would kiss Satan's butt right now if she thought it would help her win the nomination.

Not what America needs in its next president!

Say no to the status quo (Clinton/McCain)

& say yes to Barack!
What we do best is demonize and canonize persons and countries. Canonization is usually only the direct result of an established rivalry with the recipient of our latest act of demonization. Considering the frequency with which both the character of Middle East governments and our preferences among them change, any broad U.S. defense alliance among Middle East countries, as suggested by Senator Clinton, is inconceivable. The consequences of such an alliance for America and American military personnel are unimaginable.
The Cintons will go to any in trying the deny the democratic nomination to Senator Obama. This Rush Limbuagh approach to keep our country to addresee the present and future challenges facing our country. This approacch will give Godd hard time to bless us enough. Our country will need lot of blessings and help  form God in coming future
The Clinton's craven pursuit of this endorsement just underscores how willing they are to objectify their persons for political gain. Bill greased the path for Hillary by making a "make-nice" visit to Scaife a month or so ago; Hillary followed with an interview weeks ago. All this sucking-up DESPITE THE FACT THAT SCAIFE'S NEWSPAPER OPENLY ACCUSED THE CLINTONS OF BEING COMPLICIT IN THE MURDER OF THEIR CLOSE FRIEND AND AIDE VINCE FOSTER, in addition to printing vicious stories about Monica and Bill during the Clinton Admnistration. This endorsement is a grand - and disgusting - emblem of how poltically soulless the Clintons are. And the media should be reminding PA voters of the history here.
Oh "thats a good endorsement"  what a joke.  I don't think I would be proud of that one.
Is it any surpise that the media establishment steps forward to endorse the politcal establishment?  I think not.
Since Hillary threw the democratic party under the bus with her comments about Kerry, Gore and democratic activits, it does not sound suprising that Scaife endorsed her. She used to be a barry goldwater gal. she might be returning to her republican roots. her tactics of late seems to support the aforementioned statement.
Scaiffe is a hugely influential REPUBLICAN. Hillary makes deals with the devil quite well. Again, she thinks democratic voters will not notice what she's doing. Maybe in small towns they won't, but us younger voters will crucify her presidency should she become the nominee. Sadly, because that will distract from the world issues that the pope and economically challenged Americans want solved.
"Yes, yes, yes," she said when pressed about Obama's electability.

Scaife is the Rupert Murdoch of Pennsylvania.

Of course he praises Clinton because they have a lot of dirt on her and see a win against her in November.
Scum endoses sleaze...well that's very telling.
Maybe HRC can get an endorsement from Hermann Goering and Joseph Goebbels too.
Wake up Dems! This man had suggested that the Clinton's were murderers! What is Clinton's affinity to the right wing?  She'd rather go on Fox than MSNBC or CNN (excuse me, she went on Morning Joe - a right wing ex-congressman).  What about Clinton giving her constituency the same amount of attention.  It's the Dems that she's supposed to be supporting and spreading her word to.  There is nothing honest about this woman!!!!!!!
Clinton would sell her soul to the Devil if she thought it would help her win the nomination.  This move shows her desperation.
Talk about self-involved and self-referential!  Scaife endorses Hillary because she sat down for an interview with him?  Am I missing something here?  (And haven't all the other major PA papers endorsed Obama?  Can you say "phyrric victory?")
The Right Wing Conspiracy want Senator Clinton...all the more reason not to give her to them.

Obama '08!
This should add fuel to the fire that Hillary Clinton has reverted back to her Republican roots!  From an April 1998 CNN article:

He was the second-largest donor to the Nixon-Agnew campaign in 1972, giving $1 million.

Former President Ronald Reagan appointed many veterans of Scaife-funded think tanks to his administration.

Later, Scaife gave to GOPAC, the political fund that helped make Newt Gingrich speaker in 1994. Gingrich says Scaife's money laid the basis for modern conservatism. And his money still flows:

To the Heritage Foundation alone, nearly $3.5 million from Scaife foundations in the most recent three years on record.

$1.22 million to the American Enterprise Institute.

$1.40 million to Stanford University's Hoover Institution.

$325,000 to the Cato Institute.

$575,000 to the Citizens for a Sound Economy, among others.

Scaife has particular contempt for the Clintons. At a Heritage Foundation event in November 1994, Scaife said, "I think maybe Hillary and company have it figured out right. They wouldn't be happy here."

Scaife's foundations shovel millions into groups hostile to Bill Clinton. The Free Congress Foundation, which runs a conservative cable channel, received $1.9 million from 1994 to 1996.

More at this link:  http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/04/27/scaife.profile/

And from a 1999 Washington Post:

By compiling a computerized record of nearly all his contributions over the last four decades, The Washington Post found that Scaife and his family's charitable entities have given at least $340 million to conservative causes and institutions – about $620 million in current dollars, adjusted for inflation. The total of Scaife's giving – to conservatives as well as many other beneficiaries – exceeds $600 million, or $1.4 billion in current dollars, much more than any previous estimate.

Scaife did get involved in numerous anti-Clinton activities. He gave $2.3 million to the American Spectator magazine to dig up dirt on Clinton and supported other conservative groups that harassed the president and his administration. The White House and its allies responded by fingering Scaife as the central figure in "a vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president," as Hillary Rodham Clinton described it. James Carville, Clinton's former campaign aide and rabid defender, called Scaife "the archconservative godfather in [a] heavily funded war against the president."

Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and now THIS moron have endorsed Hillary Clinton.  Do we really want to nominate a Democrat who seems to have such overwhelming Republican support?

political courage? what a Joke!
she has been doing all which is popular just in faver of political gain. she would say and do anything of selfinterest.
"Clinton's decision to sit down with the Trib was courageous, given our longstanding criticism of her."
------------------------------------------------------

Is that an endorsement ? Does that not say " We don't like her since ever but since she came to us on her knees, we favor her now."

Ouch ....
I certainly agree that Clinton has the "political courage" with her experience.  If she is not the nominee, although a Democrat, I will be voting for Hillary.
No surprise.

All the nutcase, right-wingnut jobs are for Hillary.

Coulter, Limbaugh...now this whacko.
so what big deal,no ones reads your paper anyway.
Maybe Hillary's the REAL uniter, having courage to sit down with political enemies and change their minds. Obama said he would never appear on Dom Imus' show after Imus' offensive comments last year. When it was Obama's Pastor, making offensive comments, however Obama said was s time for a dialog and for people not to retreat to their respective corners. I guess he only wants to heal divides when it will help him get elected. He's a good guy, I think, but as political as any of them.
This must be one of the "Scabs" msnbc just reported? One   day yes and the next NO, or is it one day NO and the next Yes??? We see where there is a doctor needed, mental doctor. Some one just farted and they changed their vote?
Talk about selling herself to the devil himself. You really have got to wonder what price she paid to make this happen.
Why does someone endorse the very people they hated?
and to make matters worse the Moveon.org group that was created to defend the Clintons against Robert Melon Scaife the very person who has endorsed her.
I would think it should be appropriate for her to REJECT and DENOUNCE his endorsement.
wow... Obama has no courage... What selfish idiots.
THANK YOU MR. SCAIFE! SMART GUY!
In her zeal to go after the right wing vote, she has just allowed herself to fall into the trap.  SNAP!  The spring has now shut!  Just as he has endorsed her, too will he unleash all his power through the media to destroy in in a match up against McCain.  After all, he doesn't owe her a thing, and probably personally hasn't changed his view about her one iota!
Wow, am I suppose to be impressed?  I see McCain is going after Obama today too, sticking up for Billary.  He's fighting them all!  Go Obama, about time you fight back.  You have gained some new supporters, friends of mine have said they would support you if you stood up against Hillary.  After the pathetic debate the other night, I am so disgusted with you Hillary, and will never vote for you.  Also, great job attacking moveon, you have alienated much of the Dem. party...  Go run with McCain!  McCain/Billary 08
nothing like getting a real serious right winger to endorse you.
There are two ways to look at it.  She showed political courage to sit down with the nemesis of the Democrats and liberals and trash a fellow Democratic candidate or she sold out to get an endorsement.

You decide.
What a joke, more evidence the right is afraid of running against Obama.
Oh give me a break. Clinton will sit down with anyone; she has no trouble telling slick lies and not getting caught. Gift of gab? You bet. We will not know what hit us if she becomes Pres.
Wow, so now HRC has the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy  endorsing her.

Just her type of crowd.

I guess it makes sense, considering her new "umbrella" foreign policy plan.  The plan that is even MORE right wing than McCain.

Sounds to me like she is ready to launch World War 3.

And on Meet The Press this morning, her new campaign manager was asked about this, he couldn't even answer.

HRC, the newest member of the Republican Party.

Gag me with a spoon.

Obama 08
I'm not surprised. She's already doing their bidding and she does know how to lie like a whip! If I was a Republican I would want Hillary to win too, she's easier to beat with her family corrupt history, her husband's sex issues and those two corrupt brothers of her which she pretends don't exist.

And Roger Clinton calling black folks N'ers is a nice way to tell us what the Clintons really think about black folks.
A Republican endorsing another Republican, why is this news?
Blah, blah, balh. Hillary has to win PA by 15 points or more. You know, many of those endorsing her cite her fake political experience and political courage. Amerca is not in short supply of courageous leaders; America is in short supply of politicians of dedication, hope, inspiration, and less divisiveness. By endorsing Hillary, we are endorsing dishoensty and disintegrity to rule our nation.
Down with old school politics.
Nauseating. That Clinton would actually accept an endorsement from the snake who financed "The Arkansas Project" which actively promoted false (and maybe not so false) scandals like Whitewater, troopergate, the Vince Foster murder scenario, et al - really tells us more about the Clintons' lack of character, integrity, principle and possibly even sanity than anything that has happened to date.

The only thing left is a pure unadulterated lust for power. This is so disgusting it makes me question my previous support for them in the 90's.  Would someone please just get them off the national stage?
Talk about dealing with the devil.   Richard Mellon Scaife?  Richard Milhouse Nixon couldn't have been a worse endorser.  Hillary's desperation - anynewspaper, any.  Especially where she could talk about the Rev. Wright issue - "well, they asked me, so I had to answer".  You couldn't demur, Hillary?
Next you will be accepting the praise of Sean Hannity and say that he endorsed you.

Proving once again, she'll do anything to get elected, including lying down with dogs. That's not political courage just political expediency.

Mr. Schaife has an exalted opinion of himself and his raggy 'newspaper'.  I would have thought better of her if she had declined that interview, but she once again reinforces my reasons supporting Sen. Obama.
just goods to show you, Clinton is running as a Republican. And the Republicans want her.
This is so funny! The leader of the right wing slim machine is endorsing Hilary Clinton. The only reason he's doing this is so McCain will have to face her in the general election which they believe he would have a better chance of winning against. I would like to ask him if its between Clinton and McCain which one would he vote for in Nov. I know know he won't be voting for Hilary.
