Scaife endorses Clinton

Posted: Sunday, April 20, 2008 12:12 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
Richard Mellon Scaife (of right wing conspiracy fame) endorsed Clinton in the Pennsylvania Democratic primary. Scaife owns the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, which threw its backing to Clinton today. It cites Clinton’s “political courage” in particular for sitting down with its editorial board. (There, she famously injected herself into the Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy.)

The paper said, in part: "Clinton's decision to sit down with the Trib was courageous, given our longstanding criticism of her. That is no small matter: Political courage is essential in a president. Clinton has demonstrated it; Obama has not."

The Clinton campaign also says it has opened a new office in Terre Haute, Ind.

Mr. Scaithe, what do you call Obama's addressing the Rev. Wright issue?  I guess that is not political courage because it was not in your office.  It is however extremely brave to conjure sniper shootings when there were none.  I will not say I discount your endorsement, because it is important - the rationale behind it, however, is misplaced in my humble opinion.
just goes to show you, Clinton is running like a Republican. The Republicans want her. But wait, isn't this a Democratic Primary? Think about it.
Yeah, right, the Trib is the ultimate purveyor and litmus test for courage!  And Hillary's ability to dodge invisible sniper fire is another . . .
Imagine that, a republican wanting Hillary to be the nominee. Haven't they all been drooling at the mouth, hoping she'll get the nomination just so they can humiliate her in the general?  Yeah, great endorsement.  Really sways this democrat.
For real?  Next, she'll get an endorsement from Dick Cheney and an offer to take her out duck hunting.
Chuck, listen. If they think political courage is essential and lacking in Obama would be the only politician who would embrace unconventional politics until he is dragged into conventional politics by endless attacks, and nobody would have the coruage to address very sensitive issues like race in America as Obama did. The Wednesday debate has nothing to do with his courage; indeed, he seemed tired and low in energy. Also note that Hillary has weathered years of GOP attacks as First Lady, so she has well seasoned herself. But she will not win in November given her negative rating.
Two devils together how befitting!
Does Sen. Clinton reject Scaife and his endorsement?
Does she renounce Scaife?
Is this endorsement a cause for concern among Dems?  Does it raise questions about the true nature of the endorsee?

Who knowa?  LeeZ
Interesting comment on political courage. While I agree that Sen Clinton demonstrated courage by meeting with Mr. Scaife, I cannot agree with his conclusion that Sen. Obama has not. Was not his debate in Philadelphia on race relations courageous?
I agree.  Clinton is the better leader.

Finally, Hillary" Janus" Clinton has become Joe Liebermann.  She hates the democratic party activists who helped her husband in 1998 but LOVES the backing of the very man who represented the " right wing " conspiracy she cried about. Hillary reject and denounce this endorsement or by not doing so you agree with their comments.  As you clearly stated you can not choose your pastor well you can also not choose to accept this endorsement.

Hillary tosses Moveon.org under the bus to join with "The vast right wing conspiracy".
Now we understand Hillary's embrace of of the neocon policy of preemptive nuclear war in the middle east.
This on top of using anti Tibet Chinese & anti labor death squad money to finance her campaign.
Hillary Clinton, the pro NAFTA neoconservitive republican.
Who gives  a rip?

Evil loves evil.

Not an endorsement I'd ever want--especially if my names Clinton.
It is indeed no small matter. Obama has more political courage than any candidate in the race - that's why I endorse Obama.
Good for you Hillary! not the only one you got but a good one.Thank you Mr.Scaife.She sure has integrity and is strong in political courage and I agree it is most important for Pres.Hillary also has solutions and can tell you how she got them and how she will see them through. The difference in supporters tells a story too.Threats and Hate from Obamamas not here.
Hillary will sit with divil or Ben Laden if that helps her to be elected... God save us from her...
I think this pretty much cinches Hillary's metamorphosis from Democrat to Karl Rove Republican.  When you're cozying up to the people who spent most of the 1990's using every dirty trick in the book to undermine your husband's administration, you've really sunk about as low as you can go.
Wow! One newspaper in the entire State of Pa. endorses Clinton!  Even her "home town" newspaper in Scranton endorsed Obama.

Notice he didn't mention what is best for the people of Pennsylvania.  Just what turned him on about her.

For a better endorsement, go read the real newspapers of Philadelphia (Daily News and Inquirer), Harrisburg, Allentown, Pittsburgh, and Bucks County, who all endorsed Obama strongly!

It's over Clinton.  You are not going to get the 60% vote margin that you needed from Pennsylvania.  Any gains in delegates will be eradicated in two weeks in North Carolina and Indiana.  Oregon and South Dakota will balance any Clinton gains in Kentucky and West Virginia.  Suddenly, Hillary is pinning all her hopes on....Peurto Rico! That is sure to impress the super-delegates.

By alienating just about every key group in the Democratic Party in order to curry favor with the "Reagan Democrats" of Central rural Pa., how does Clinton think she will rebuild support in the more progressive states next month?
I AM SURE THAT HILLARY ROVE CLINTON WAS THRILLED
Why doesn't she just get it over with and change her party affiliation. The republicans seem to like her more than their own candidate.
Dick Scaife is and has been one of the most evil profiters our country has ever seen . . .

Spreading fear and loathing wherever he goes, Dick Scaife seems like a cruel and dangerous man.

WHY would anyone want his endorsement????
I guess HRC has shown Republican she really is..

John McCain is looking for a running mate..and HRC is proving her worth..
If you have not walked in my shoes please don't say what you would have done.  This is my statement to Senator Clinton.  I am a child of the 60's just as Rev. Wright.  When I had to train the person that was to be my supervisor, because he was white and I black.  If you knew you had more experience than the person that got the job, the reason because they were white.  I can understand the bitterance of Rev. Wright although, I did not take that path.  Please don't let the change this nation has to turn the page on all such thoughts by not electing the person who can bring this nation together Senator Obama.
Talk about crossing over political lines. Hillary has demonstrated she can do this well. The Obama campaign is based in negativity. He only tears other people down and never says exactly what he is going to do to slove problems. On one hand he says he would bring people together, on the other hand, he has the most negative message and campaign. He has demonstrated that hates this country. I think he is a closet communist.
The thing that makes this particularly perverse in my opinion is that HRC actively seemed to court this endorsement. Has the vast right wing conspiracy been supplanted by the vast left wing conspiracy in the HRC lexicon to describe the occult forces out to get her.
Bizarre and perverse are the words that come to mind.
Now Im not a conspiracy theorist, but when this primary is done I would like to see just how the Republicans who changed their party affiliation to vote Democrat voted. Just to make sure there is not an effort to prolong it for their benefit....
Any undecided Democrats who are still wondering which candidate is best suited to resist The Machine this fall better read up on the life and times of Richard Mellon Scaife.  This lying snake loathes anything even remotely Democratic or liberal.

For such a despicable (although quite capable) character to endorse a Clinton should put to rest once and for all the extremely naive notion that the jaws of the monster are not dripping saliva for the chance to gobble up Hillary in the general.  And it most certainly will!

Obviously, she is dealing with the devil for the lure of money and power.  If, by some horrible turn of events, brain-dead superdelegates go against the majority and crown her with the nomination, the Democratic Party will once again flame out in spectacular defeat.

Please, let us not follow Hillary into the trap!  It is time to stop our slow-motion suicide.
I'm happy that the Trib is backing Clinton for the reasons they stated. It seems anyone who has tough questions for obama gets cast aside and any critic of obama is rebuked by his campaign and followers. Unfortunately if he were to become president who would he blame if his ideas don't go anywhere like they have in the US Senate? Will people and he blame those in Congress? The media? The racist? He makes claims that he got ethics reform through however it appears to have been the work of Sen Harry Reid who authored the Bill and did the hard work. If the democrats were to be honest they know that the baggage that's on the table for scrutiny about obama's associates will tank him in the general election. The republicans will have a much harder time with the Clintons since Whitewater went nowhere, no wrong doing at the cost of the taxpayers (republican led investigation)and Hillary can and would stand up to the onslaught. She's the only hope the demos have of bringing home the bacon in Nov! If not i vote for McCain!
When an drunken Abilene cowboy was asked why he tore off all his clothing, and jumped into a brier patch, he said, "I thought it was a good idea, at the time".  While Hillary is courting an unusual assortment of individuals (Richard Mellon Scaife being one of them), reasonable people usually avoid the appearance of being out of touch.  While neither candidate will eschew anyone from joining them, I, personally, like the line-up of Obama's supporters.  To me, character is like water; it keeps seeking its own level.  And, Chelsea, that is the answer to your "Why?" question when an earlier supporter of the Clinton name decides that "...at the time" was not such a good idea.
Are we to be surprised by this endorsement? This the "vast right-wing conspiracy" that Hillary railed against to Matt Lauer after Bill's "problems." The right always wanted to run against Hillary not Senator Obama. I hope Senator Clinton is not too proud of this endorsement
Sen. Hillary Clinton does have tremendous courage. She has taken on the national media who rolled over on Obama. The Endorsement by Richard Mellon Schaife is fabulous. Hilllary will take Pennsylvania,Indian, and roll right over Barack Obama and Howard Dean.
Disgusting. Even the thought of sitting down and talking to someone like Scaife makes my skin crawl.  This is the same person who would have impeached and convicted Bill Clinton, and probably jailed Hillary for murdering Vince Foster. I know politics makes strange bedfellows, but Hillary should display a bit of pride and integrity here. I cannot imagine aligning myself with a man who personally financed the attempt to destroy my husband, his presidency, our family, our reputations, and our legacy. This just adds to the claim that Hillary will do ANYTHING to win this nomination.
Why wouldn't a republican newspaper endorse Hillary? They know that the republican attack machine will be rejected in November just as Hillary's negatives have gone up as a direct response to her negative attacks. With Senator Obama being more willing to get to the issues (which the republicans know they can't win on) their only hope is to run against a Clinton.
What's there to lose
Hmmm... of right wing conspiracy fame?  Is she sure that this is someone that she wants to be identified with?  She's been accused for months of acting like a Republican.  Now she's being endorsed by them.  I don't know about anyone else out there, but it frightens me, just a little, that someone who says she's trying so hard to unite the party is garnering the interest, endorsements, and approval or the right wing.
Just realize it said right wing CONSPIRACY fame.  Belay my last.  I still feel she's rotten though.
So they back her in the primary. no one expects them to do the same in November do they? They want to face her in November because McCain cannot be the change candidate that would allow him to be "the maverick". His true republican colors are starting to come through and an election between him and Obama will result in a democratic landslide. Independents do not want to see a continuation of the Bush/Cheney administration and McCain has that monkey squarely on his back.

What was that "Judas" remark?
If I ever had any doubt about supporting Barack Obama, the endorsement of Richard Scaife, the major financier of Republican attack smears of Democratic presidential candidates, has erased it.
Right-wing conspiracy endorses Clinton. Ha Ha ha! Man bites dog - biggest joke of the campaign so far.

There can be no easier way to finish off your enemy than to offer her something she desperately seeks, knowing that, that's the crucible where she would be finally destroyed.
As a lifelong dem, I see this as a negative. This is more proof Clinton would do or say anything to win. We have become so weary of the right wing media thanks a great deal to our admiration for the Clintons. Now as she plays Enemy of my Enemy is my Friend, it makes me wonder if she was ever our friend. Or were we just manipulated into demonizing republicans so Bill could save his legacy? Nothing from the Clintons can be seen as anything but devicive at this point.
This Obama fever is both contagious and fatal. Rather tragic so many have succumbed to Obama razzle-dazzle with their wearing reality blocking Rose Colored Glasses.

Obama offers a message of desired change but does not offer meat and potatoes as does Clinton. This is Obama in Wonderland. Obama only needs now to click his heels three times then wish, "I want to go home to the White House." Obama does not offer viable long term solutions to America's problem nor to our world's problems. As many say, Obama is a flash in the pan.

A majority of Americans are fat. A majority of Americans are lazy. A majority of Americans want their cake and eat it too. Obama is the cake of senseless dreams of an easy life. Clinton is the meat and potatoes of a hard earned living. Victims of Obama Fever see only Easy Street being guided by promising directions of Obama. Without those Rose Colored Glasses, easy enough to clearly see Obama is leading his ill to Skid Row, Los Angeles.

Clinton offers America hard work. She proposes we all roll up our sleeves and get to work. Her plans and policies call upon all Americans to get off their butts and help work  to solve our country's problems. Clinton does not offer easy solutions, Clinton does not offer cake to fat  lazy Americans. Clinton offers a chance for America, a chance which must be earned through hard work by all Americans, including the majority fat and lazy.

What these fat lazy Americans wearing Rose Colored Glasses cannot see is the republican party will rip apart Obama with ease. Obama cannot defeat McCain and America will suffer a George Bush clone for, at least, another four years.

Clinton cannot be ripped apart by the republican party; she has already been ripped.

I am an Oklahoma farm girl, a red skinned farm girl, who was literally born on our farm, delivered by a "Chahta ohoyo alla eshi apistikeli", a Choctaw midwife who delivered me penniless and ignorant, who delivered me to a harsh life of farming. Two decades later, the daughter of my Choctaw midwife delivered our daughter, on our same farm, on our same bed, but our girl was not born penniless like her parents.

Our family knows the value of dedication to hard work for betterment of our small tribe. We are successful today because we have devoted our lives to hard work and advancement. None of us within our small tribe are fat and certainly none of us are lazy.

Those blindly supporting this whimsical dream of Obama will continue to lead mediocre lives, will continue to be fat and lazy, will continue to dream but never lift a finger to realize their dreams.

Obama offers idealism void of actuality. Clinton offers reality and hard work.

My preference is hard work and callused hands. I know hard work produces results and produces great pride. Clinton offers us hard work and results. Obama offers a dream soon to be forgotten.

McCain will defeat Obama. Fat and lazy Obama Fever suffers will continue to feel our government's enslaving whip upon their backs.  Our small family tribe will not feel the sting of our government's whip; we have freed ourselves through a lifetime of hard work.
