State Rep pushes Obama message

Posted: Sunday, April 20, 2008 6:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
ABINGTON, Pa. -- State Rep. and Deputy Speaker of the House Josh Shapiro (D-PA) is an active Obama supporter and enjoys telling his undecided constituents in suburban Montgomery County why. His pitch for the Illinois Senator is similar to what other Obama supporters say -- he wants change.

"We need someone who can build new coalitions and go out and try to solve them," Shapiro told First Read. "Look at what he has done here in Montgomery County. We were trailing Republicans in registrations by 32,000 registrants after the last election in November 2007. Today we are up by 11 or 12,000 registrants.”

"That's not by accident. The Obama campaign went out and re-registered Independents and Republicans," he continued. "And they were attracted to him for some reason, for various reasons. If he can do that on the politics, imagine what he can do building coalitions on important policy issues."

There is no way to determine the Obama campaign is solely responsible for the increase in Democratic registrants. Shapiro did defend this claim, though, at least anecdotally: "I can tell you, being so involved with the Obama campaign, we were having volunteers showing up at the courthouse in Norristown, our county seat with stacks this high and there was no effort like that coming from the Clinton campaign, as far as I know."

Shapiro said he thinks at least 70 percent of the 40,000 new registrants are going to vote for Obama on Tuesday. And he thinks Obama could win the state.

"I keep saying it is going to be a 2-4 point race. And it could go either way. But it's going to be very close," Shapiro said. "And the other reality is, that at the end of the day, neither candidate, whoever is the victor or whoever loses here in Pennsylvania, neither one comes out with any real appreciable net gain in delegates. … And you've got, at that point, nine contests left and Sen. Obama will have an insurmountable lead in delegates and that at the end of the day is what it's all about."

OBAMA AND THE JEWISH VOTE
In addition to being a state representative, Shapiro is active in the Jewish community and is working to promote Obama among Jewish voters in the state. Shapiro organized an event on Wednesday morning where Obama met with 75 Jewish leaders in the Philadelphia area and said he was satisfied with Obama's answers during the session.

"What I thought was the best part about his remarks was right at the end, … and [Obama] said 'I've had a very strong relationship with the Jewish community in Chicago,' where he's from, 'that predates my involvement in public life,'" Shapiro said. "And [Obama] said, 'so I really hope that you'll not listen to the nonsense emails that are floating around and the rumor and innuendo that is floating around and recognize that I care very deeply about the Jewish community and the Jewish community that knows me cares deeply back about me and we've had a partnership.' He hopes to have that partnership with the Jewish community throughout Pennsylvania and throughout the nation. I thought it was really honest, from the heart, not scripted at all. I thought he hit a home run. I think he really connected with people."

During ABC's debate on Wednesday night, Obama did not definitively say he would treat an attack on Israel by Iran as he would a similar attack on the United States. Yet, Shapiro defended Obama's answer as "more thoughtful."

"He made it clear, I think, that an attack on Israel would be responded to appropriately by the United States. But I think he also provided a lot of 40,000-foot view from a broader diplomatic standpoint in that question. So I think one could argue that he should have said yes upfront and then explained it but I think ultimately at the end of the day, his answer said the same things Senator Clinton did but offered a little bit of scope and perspective on the issue. I was very satisfied with his answer."

Shapiro also lamented the questions asked during the first 50 minutes of the debate, saying undecided voters wanted to know more about the candidates' stances on the economy, war in Iraq, and healthcare.

"I thought it was interesting that they gave four or five minutes to the issue of whether [Obama] wears a flag lapel pin and when it came time to the question of gas prices, I think Charlie Gibson said something like, all right, real quick, in 30 seconds, how are we going to lower the price of gas," Shapiro said. "I mean, the American people want to hear about gas prices, healthcare, the economy and jobs and Iraq. They don't want to hear about whether someone wears a flag lapel pin, so frankly I am disappointed most in the two moderators of the debate because I don't think they gave the American people what they wanted."

Ultimately, as an elected leader and Jewish voter, Shapiro pitched his best endorsement of Obama for undecided Jewish voters. While he refused to defend Pastor Wright's comments, he said Obama should be judged on what Obama has done while involved with the community. "If you really follow the experience that his pastor apparently was putting forward, then he wouldn't be 100% pro-Israel and he'd be supportive of Hamas and he'd be saying anti-Semitic things," Shapiro said. "I'm not a single issue voter. But I also never could vote for someone who is not staunchly pro-Israel, who did not recognize Israel's security is sacrosanct and would not be a good friend to the Jewish community … I think, at the end of the day, when the voters have all the facts, they'll recognize that there's a lot of bad rumors going around there but there is no shred of evidence that this guy isn't 100% on Israel and issues important to the Jewish community."

HOW ABOUT NOTING THE 3 POINT SWING IN FAVOR OF OBAMA IN TODAY'S GALLUP POLL.  The post debate blip is over.
Thank You State Rep Josh Shapiro (D-PA) for being an Obama supporter and helping to bring this primary to a end.... I hope you can convince your constituents that Obama is the better of the two....
Hillary Clinton's chief strategist refused to answer when asked on Meet the Press about the Middle East alliance she is proposing to commit our military to. Isn't this something she should tell us?
I'm a new voter in Pittsburgh and I can tell you I see lots of Obama signs.  He has more signs than Hillary.  Obama has lots of signs in Jewish American neighborhoods AND African American neighborhoods.  I still think Hillary will win because of older voters but I think there's a chance polls are misleading us.  It's hard to say what will happen when there are so many new voters.
There should be no doubt that Barack Obama would protect Israel and defend it in the event of any attack by Iran or any other aggressor. Thank you State Rep. Shapiro for recogizing that Barack Obama is the one who can improve America's dismal image.
John Zoby is calling a double digit win for Clinton and his polling today had her up by 15 points.  The combined totaly of two days is 6, but all the undecideds are going Clinton.  Sorry Mr Shapiro, last I read the Jewish vote in Penn is 70/20 for Clinton.
Wonderful and Shalom...
One heart beating as one...will we have that chance in our life?...we must HOPE and pray...
God Bless All God's Children..
State Rep. Shapiro...here you go giving Senator Obama all the credit for registering new voters!!  Very convincing...til you got to the part "as far as I know".  That means you don't REALLY know...maybe, you should check this out before you find yourself misrepresenting the facts!!

Please have more respect for the people you're talking too!!
March 31, 2008

In a letter to the state's Jewish community, about 60 Jewish supporters of Obama, including some politicians, rabbis and community leaders, dismissed concerns raised about the candidate's commitment to Israel, praised his response to the controversial statements of his pastor and urged them to support the Illinois lawmaker in the Democratic primary.

So what is the "new" news here?
Obama will loose the Jewish vote----period, and Clinton will win PA by at least 15%. This guy is breathing the smoke put out by Obama himself.
Josh Shapiro?!? Thee Josh Shapiro?!? That man is the most important man today, and Obama has him in his back pocket. Shapiro is an icon! This election is over!
Okay Josh, Obama wants change. Maybe he's let you in the secret of what that change is, and if so, could you clue us in on it?
Purl Gurl,

Please honey, you are so angry.

To register so many new voters in Pa. took alot of 'hard work'. By what measure do you describe Senator Obama as fat and lazy? I know you said 'all' Americans were, but I'll prove you wrong by just his example. You need therapy dear.

Sounds like a bunch of bitter white people to me, that's all.
I totally agree with Shapiro Obama is for all races  does not exclude Jewish people. Infact here in Chicago he worked hand in hand with the Jewish Community. It speaks volume for its self that the Sen. Obama won with flying colors because he does not favor any particular race, because he is a uniter of all races so that we can all become one people that it is Obama's desire. Think about this he is not running for president because of personal gain. He would want to bring back this country to where it was some years ago. If you travel to over seas people hate the Americans because of many reasons, this war and the way America want to be on front page all the time.
It is very important that some politician understand some of the distortions that come with politics. Our politics and life can change when we build veritable coalitions for truth.
Clinton's strategist couldn't answer any questions.  David A. did a better job stating Obama's case.  Clinton's strategist reminded me of a child making up a story to cover himself for something bad that he did.
Just for the record:  I am way over 65, I have voted the Democratic ticket all my life, I have worked in social work all my life with all types of people and learned to read people pretty well.
If Barack Obama gets the nomination, I will not vote for him - under any circumstances.  I have looked long and hard at the candidates and as one of the "silent" people up to this point ( I was never called to partiicpate in a poll) , I just want to make sure the Obama supporters , media, and politicians hear this very, very clearly because I am only one in many that feels this way.  Under NO circumstances will I support B. Obama as president of this counry.
It is ironic that Hillary and hill was suggesting that obama can be a good vice prez. Now they are attacking him as if he is going to destroy the country. please Msnbc, I am from london but please please raise the issue of their V.P recommendations and contradicting on the other side.
I am stunned about the whole thing!
On Tuesday, I encourage "typical white people" to vote "present".... If you do, for the first time in my adult life, I'll be proud of my country....

Obama/Rezko '08:  "Change without experience"
Think about this primary, if Obama wasn't in it.

We would have two washington ELITES, running for office.

Same ole, same old politics would be continuing..

However Obama IS in this race. And we don't want WASHINGTON continuing on the same path. NOT THIS TIME.

Obama 08

Obama also should focus on all the trade issues related to workers in PA
Obviously from the absolute media lockdown that has taken place, Hillary made a huge gaffe at the debate when she said she would use a massive US involvement in the Middle East if any of the counties in her umbrella of favored countries was attacked.  She is making the type of entangling commitment that led to World War I and could result in an un-ending war inflaming the whole Middle East.  It is really scary. It puts her to the right of George Bush and John McCain. Yet it is spooky the way no one in her campaign or the media will talk about it. What gives? I am not trying to damage her, I just want her to repudiate it as a mis-statement.
thank you rep.shapiro for your endorsement of obama!!why is hillary trashing move on? why is the media not paying any attention to this? as i recall move on was started to help bill fend off''the vast right wing conspiracy''during the impeachment troubles..now she says she doesn't agree with them? very troubling and no notice in the media but we will be hearing weatherman stories up the wazoo..you know when sen. obama was 8 years old!!this is making me crazy.yea why is no one talking about hillary offering our military to assist in all matters of the middle east?she is a war hawk!
YOU ALL ARE GOING TO FIND OUT IN 4 YEARS THAT IF OBAMA IS BETTER OR NOT.
Thank you Dep. Spkr. Shapiro for your support and drive for Sen. Obama. I hope as well that you can convince the Pa. electorate of the choice that needs to be made for our future and the future of our children. Sen. Obama is in a class by himself and no doubt would be a far better President for our great country. Sen. Obama is not perfect, but I feel that he does care for us the average citizen who just struggles to make it each day. Whereas Sen. Clinton only talks the talk, not knowing what it takes just to survive and support a family. Eight years is more than enough of having a Clinton in the White House.
Hillary will be our next president.  There is no candidate more competent for the job.  Obama was totally inept during the debate on ABC and has not impressed me during any of the debates. Obama acts like an arrogant child.  What is he going to do flick his shoulders at the international leaders when they take issue with his answers?  His inexperience shows and he is becoming more and more alarming to me and to those I have spoken with lately. Where did the Democratic Party find this guy?
Wow a pretty good story considering that it looked like Clinton central for 2 days straight. I am surprised this one made it past the cutting room.
Go Obama '08
I cannt believe any one voteing for Isrealy benefit would vote Obama. What about his wifes papers she says her assets and power belong to blacks first and formost. This woman that believes in segregation not likeing asimilation. I think this man better look deeper fast.He is friends with Farrakhan does this man think he is an Israelian supporter. All these people dont endorse him by drawing his name from a hat.Carter thinks hes great. The one who is helping the enemy now by giveing  recognition to Hamas. I know he disavows them and they say they understand it is political.Well i wont take the chance.this mans listeners better look deeper.
It  seems that no matter which Middle Eastern country is attacked, the U. S will jump in, guns blazing.  At least, that's what Hillary Clinton says.  Does she realize the extent of what she is promising?
Obama '08!
Dredbear in Texas
Yes we want change, but we want to change for better, not for worse. Obama will bring change, but his change is for worse, not for better.
Gad! Don't the Obama's endorsers will ever learn...if Obama nominated a a Democrat...McCain will eat him alive...the Republician have already study Obama...and Hillary's supporters will have mixed feeling about whether or not tyhey will vote for Obama..I am one of them.

Steve P., Washington
Mr Shapiro
I am jewish as I am sure you are Mr Shapiro
and I am disgusted that he would support an man that has a personal close relationship with Mr Wright who hates jews, hates whites and supports hamas and hezbola
Shame on you
The best way to unite the party and prepare for November is to vote for Barack in Pennsylvania.

An Obama victory will put pressure on Mrs. Clinton to drop out of the race.  This would give Mr. Obama more time to prepare for the November race.

Push him all you want and you'll get McCain. I won't vote for McCain nor will I vote for Obama. Does no one see what a joke Obama is? No experience, just learned how to preach a speach. How can anyone in their right mind think this man could even begain to know how to govren our country?
Why isn't the press reporting Hillary's response to the Middle East Alliance question?... She said, plain and simple she would involve us in any war over there if Iran attacked ANY of the surrounding countries.  Does that sound like change to anybody who is actually listening?  You spend 7 days talking about bitter, and two minutes talking about her willingness to take us to war again. It is disgraceful that you are not reporting about this in depth.
That 'deterrent umbrella for all states in the Middle East' statement, made by Hillary during the debate, was a major policy blunder.  The press, being so caught up in the salacious tidbits of the race, failed to underscore this ludicrous statement.

Doesn't this umbrella statement send a signal to Al Qaeda that it will be quite easy to engage us in endless war and serve their ultimate purpose to bankrupt us in this way? If we are to be victorious against these terrorist thugs, it will be only if we define the terms of the conflict and not them.
Obama ‘08
I am a Democrat and have no intention of voting for Obama. People were too quick to embrace this guy. His past is very questionable. Not sure what kind of man he truly is. If Obama is the Democratic nominee I will be voting for McCain or not voting at all.
The more direct exposure Obama has to folks the more they see what a visionary leader he is - and the more they come to understand how sound his plans are for our future.

It's unfortunate that the smear and slash and burn Clinton stategy has tried to cover up what a great leader he will be.

It's important for people like Shapiro and Casey and others to bring that message to individual voters one after another.

Hillary's track record on jobs has been abysmal............not only have thousands of jobs been lost in upstate NY after she promised the very same things she's promised in PA, but she hasn't lifted a finger to help the folks in her state.

Her campaign senior advisor Penn has been involved in making thousands of dollars on the Columbian trade deals that she says she's opposing.  that doesn't give much credibility to her position.

That's the track record PA needs to look at.  Ohio realized too late they were duped about her support for NAFTA>  PA has an opportunity to undo the damage.

Yeah, this guy Shapiro is great. I heard him speak in Abington at an Obama office and at other times. He is a fast rising star in PA and has a great future ahead of him.

I'm so proud that Obama has supporters of such quality and intellectual honesty. It reflects very well on Obama that Shapiro is in his camp.
Dear PA voters:  Please, please make this end. Obama voters:  Go out and vote.

Clinton supporters:  I know you wanted your candidate to win.  You have to see that the only way Clinton can win is to overcome a lead in pledged delegates and popular vote.  A Clinton taking of the nomination would cause the loss of the african american vote and the demoralization of the youth vote - the future of our party.

If this thing goes on much further, we will be handing the presidency to McCain and locking in our Iraw disaster.  You have the power to stop this from happening.

Do what's right.  Do what's best for the party.  Please, please vote for Obama and let's get down to the business of setting the country back on the right course.
Let's face it.  Those opposed to Barack Obama are opposed because of his race.  How else would one justify voting for Hillary?
Yes let's get Hillary to answer for admitting in the debate Bosnia was a 'lie' (I said something I knew wasn't true), then this what would we call "League of Nations" with the Arab countries?  Is she NUTS?  I did hear McCain mention this as well!  Interesting, are we sure she is not running for VP under McCain, apparently they like to drink together, why not?  He could do the first 4, she could do the last 4?  But wait, Obama will win in 2008, so that saves us from that.  Now today he did say McCain would be better than Bush (McCain admitted Barack is a Patriot), but I guess ANYBODY IS BETTER THAN BUSH@! Go Barack Go! PA end it Tuesday, Barack 55, Hillary 45.
This is truly a movement for CHANGE.

Many people have decided to stop being complacent and accepting as a matter of course the way politics "works" in the past few decades.

The microscopic focus on every nuance of how words are spoken, the sound bit "phone it in" media coverage, the distorting of positions and the "say anything" 90s style politics has been a disgraceful example of what is worst about of political apathy.

Barack Obama represents and truly believes in a real deviation from this type of campaigning. What amazes me is how absolutely consistent he has been between his book that was written years ago and the words he speaks today. He has not changed his tune when he was down in the polls. He has not said that things would be easy. You see a new political philosophy that is taking strong root. It is represented by those 35,000 at Independence Park and countless other records setting events.

Barack has inspired me, not by telling me HE can save the World, but by telling me that I MUST save the world. For the past many years I have looked on and complained at what was going on around me. Thinking, "How could this happen in this great country? How could our leaders let things get so bad?" What I did not realize was that voting is just the first step in making real change. You must then be informed, then show up, then take action and make your voice heard. Not just at the ballet box, but by starting a blog, sending a letter, donating some money, showing up in the public gallery, sitting on a committee, running for office and more, more, more.

You have to do what you can, not what is easy. Watching the news dribble and the spectacle should not serve to pacify you, it should be inspiration to turn off the TV and go sign up for something.

This is what Barack Obama means to me. This is my chance to put action behind the words. My chance to show my children what it means to take back our country. What it truly means to be a democracy and why America is the greatest country in the World.

Please reach deep in your heart, look in your soul. You know this is the way it should be. The way it was supposed to be all along. Let us get Barack Obama to the White House, let's get off our asses and make this happen. For the love of our country, the love of communities, the love of neighbors and the love of our children.

We can change the World... YES WE CAN!

http://laststopmidwest.blogspot.com
I'm not going to judge people but Obama does seem to be the lesser of two evils.

On the other hand, what has (post WW2) Israel EVER done for the U.S.A?  Every president gives Israel weapons.  Every president gives Israel's enemies weapons.  Every president feigns shock when they use these weapons on each other.  Every president tries to make peace in the final years of their presidency.
Yet every time Israel attacks its enemies, even when out of retaliation, the "extremist" countries focus only on the fact that America funded Israel's aggression.

Hillary just declared herself as aspiring Empress of the Middle East the other night, but Obama's message was one of "same old politics" regarding Israel, not one of real change.

Real change would be to stop meddling in the Middle East politics, Israel included.  American-funded weapons have have killed hundreds of Jews in Israel over the years.  It would seem obvious than any self-respecting Jew would demand that America stop sending money to the region.

Ron Paul 2012
"We're nasty, and we admit it".  Oh, yeah, that's a good strategy.  Who wants that?  Hillary, of course.
Geoff Garin's tempered appearance on Russert was a big reminder of Hillary's utter failure as a campaign organizer.  Garin who is very new to his position on her campaign had to be somewhat embarrassed by Axlerod and Russert knowing more of  Hillary's position statements than he did.  The continuing campaign chaos Hillary has permitted is one reason why Garin is new to his position on her campaign, neither of which is much of a compliment to her skills as an executive.  Now Hillary herself is becoming an embarrassment.
Gregory,
Hillary does not speak the truth; why would you think she would tell the American people what she intends to do? If she beomes President, she will continue the only way she knows how - she will do what she damn well wants and explain it to no one.
Good to hear. I'm Jewish and a strong Obama supporter. Some of the attacks leveled against him for supposed "anti-Semitism" are from people who care nothing about the Jewish community. Right wing Christian extremists have been trying to force their religion down Jewish people's throats for years and now they think that by out-Likuding the Democrats they can peel off some Jewish votes. Failing that in 2004, they've now turned to sending vicious and dishonest emails around to Jews, scaring them about Obama's supposed anti-Semitism, when the people pushing these lies are genuine anti-Semites in the first place.

There are many Jews who support Hillary Clinton and many Jews who support Barack Obama. It's important that we make the decision based on who is truly best for the Democratic Party and for America and not based on some right-wing slime.
State Rep Josh Shapiro - THANK YOU!

It takes guts to stand up to the Clinton machine in PA!

I'll be on your mailing list and I will contribute to your next campaign .... from Missouri! That is the rach of Barack Obama !

For America ! For Obama'08 !
