Battle for Pennsylvania: One day to go

Posted: Monday, April 21, 2008 9:10 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

In addition to the MSNBC/McClatchy/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette poll, which has Clinton up by five over Obama (48%-43%), there are two other surveys out. Quinnipiac has Clinton leading by seven points (51%-44%), and Suffolk University has her up by 10 points (52%-42%).

The New York Times: "Obama sharpened his tone against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday as the six-week Pennsylvania primary contest raced to a close, with the rivals marshaling extensive resources in a battle for undecided voters and delegates that could determine whether the Democratic nominating fight carries on." More: "The intensity of Mr. Obama’s campaign and his willingness to air negative attacks in recent days suggest he harbored hope of ending the Clinton campaign here or avoiding a major loss that would keep the race alive."

And attention 2008 history book writers: "Neil Oxman, a media consultant here, estimated that by the end of the six-week campaign, Mr. Obama will have spent more than $9 million on television and Mrs. Clinton will have spent almost $4 million.

The Washington Post has similar piece: "The volleying in the final hours reflected the high stakes in Tuesday's contest. Clinton is favored to win, but the senator from New York may still face renewed pressure to end her candidacy unless she rolls up a sizable margin in the popular vote and significant gains in the overall delegate count. As the candidates jostled with one another, their advisers mounted a final effort to shape expectations for what will constitute victory on Tuesday. The Pennsylvania race has forced Obama to rewrite his script from earlier contests, with the result being a more aggressive tone and style in the final hours of this campaign than had been the case in previous states. Far more than at any other time in the campaign, Obama has applied pressure to Clinton, both on the stump and in his increasingly negative advertising.

The Boston Globe: “The exchange highlighted a sharp negative turn in the Democratic presidential campaign before tomorrow's primary in Pennsylvania, where some recent polls have shown Clinton's lead shrinking to single digits.”

Per NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones, Clinton yesterday criticized Obama for what she described as his compliments for John McCain. "Sen. Obama said today that John McCain would be better for the country than George Bush," she said. "Now, Sen. McCain is a real American patriot who has served our country with distinction, but Sen. McCain would follow the same failed policies that have been so wrong for our country the last seven years."

Clinton then did something she does often. She asked the audience a series of questions in a shout-and-response style we've seen many times before, starting Iowa with "Are you ready for a president who..." and more recently "Who will you hire to..." The exercise revs up the crowd, as it did today. "Sen. McCain thinks it's okay to keep our troops in Iraq for the next 100 years. Is that better than George Bush?" she asked eliciting a big “No!” from the audience. "Sen. McCain will continue the failed economic policies of George Bush that have brought us deficit and increasing debt. Is that better than George Bush? (Crowd: No!) Sen. McCain does not have a health-care plan that will cover every American. In fact, we will have more and more uninsured Americans. Is that better than George Bush? (Crowd: No!) Sen. McCain has no plans to end the housing foreclosure crisis or cut the cost of gas at the pump. Is that better than George Bush? (Crowd: No!) We need a nominee who will take on John McCain, not cheer on John McCain, and I will be that nominee."

Of course, Clinton herself complimented McCain a few weeks ago when she said that McCain had passed the commander-in-chief test -- as had she -- but that Obama had just given one speech. Bill Clinton also has praised McCain on the stump.

The New York Daily News: “Many observers believe Clinton has to do decisively well in Pennsylvania to keep party insiders from backing her rival, Barack Obama, and pushing her to drop out of the contest. Clinton needs ‘blowout numbers,’ says Peter Fenn, a Democratic consultant who isn't affiliated with either campaign.”

And watch those late deciders. “If the pattern of previous primaries and caucuses holds, the biggest procrastinators -- those who make up their minds on Tuesday -- will probably break for Senator Hillary Clinton. If they side with her again in Pennsylvania, it may help Clinton hold off Senator Barack Obama with a big-enough victory to save her candidacy, again.”

I hope Hillary loses big.  She is pathetic and will neve get the nomination!
Senator Obama's "holier than thou" attitude has come right around an bit him on thee butt.  Not that I think comparative ads are off limits because I don't...but to blast away at Clinton for using ads in which she compares words to actions or record to claims and then do the same thing well....now who is it that will do anything to get elected?

It was a choice Obama made.
I eagerly await comments from supporters of Senator Clinton who will say, "See, he can't close the deal!"

Doesn't the same apply to Senator Clinton?

She opened the campaign as "inevitable" and clearly the front-runner.  What happened since then?  She's down by 140 delegates overall and 163 pledged delegates.

Talk about not sealing the deal.
Make up your mind, Hillary.  Before, you said that John McCain passed the commander in chief test.  Now, you are saying he does not.  Which is it?  Also, why is it OK for you to praise John McCain, but it is not OK for Obama to praise John McCain?

On the subject of campaign spending, Obama pays his campaign bills.  Hillary does not.  Therefore, the fact that Obama is outspending Hillary 2 to 1 is irrelevant.  At least Obama has the integrity to pay his creditors.  Of course, everyone know that Hillary has no integrity at all.

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Just ask their creditors.
We know one thing..We'll all be glad when it's over
...It's over ...over here..

Love your neighbor..
To the Hillary supporters from PA:  If you really support and care for your candidate you should really consider casting your vote for Obama. Hillary is ready to go off the deep end. Please let her have her deserved rest. Don't push her to go the distance that will hurt her so much more. If you really support and care for the Democratic party you should really consider casting your vote for Obama. This needs to end in order to have enough time and focus for the general election. If you really support and care for this country then consider casting your vote for Obama. Like it or not he is the best choice to help us weather what might be even more troubled times before they can get better.
HEADLINE: Pope Brings Message of Hope. Clinton says, "Just words."

Mrs. Clinton went on to say that the pope should, "Stop with the big rallies and the speeches." She stated that this is an "inexperienced pope." "He hasn't been in Rome long enough," she said.

"What's next," she asked, "faith and charity"?

LOL
When he had the chance to stand up for his principles...he failed miserably!!

He said he wouldn't be just another "politician"...so what are all those negative ads about?

Change and hope just flew out the window...what is left?  Experience?  Judgement?

Nothing left to "cling" too!!
I predict 6% for Hillary, but the real story is the movement.  In a state tailor made for her, Barack has once again, held great sway.  Against the machine and garbage attacks, he has continued to show he can lead us to our best future.

YES WE CAN!

For those of you who hold money against him?  That's surely a first in politics.

Barack for our best future.

FIRED UP for PENN.  Thank you to Senator Casey, all our endorsers and supporters (of special note SEIU and Penn Dems) and to ALL THE PEOPLE ON THE GROUND.  This movement will not stop, in the face of adversity, we continue.
Oh my! Mr goody goody, phoney is using negative campaigning just like any other politician. Is this the politics of hope? Obama is a fraud and for the first time in my democratic life, I will not be voting in November if this smooth talking con artist is our candidate. Disgusting!!!
Hillary came into the state wit a 20+ point lead.  That has shrunk to five.

Hillary hires incompetent people to get her message out and she wonders why she can't get int the ball game?????

Hillary linton
A Liar for all seasons
Morning Joe's nose continues to grow with his head stuck up Hillary's butt.Just reported that Hillary's campaign is 1 million in Debt. Ask yourselves Hillary supporter's, How can she manage the Economy any better? She Can't, that's Your answer !

Smerconish still says Barack by 2 tomorrow. We'll find out in 36 hours. Pennsylvania has The chance to put the Democratic party on it's way to a general election campaign. Will that happen, we'll soon find out.

Remember what Hillary said back in 1995 about Blue collar worker's Pennsylvania. SCREW EM !

Barack Obama for POTUS !
If everything's so "in the bag" for the Obama nomination, why is he spending so much time and money in Pennsylvania?  Why is he so afraid of Clinton?
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
You can bet the swift boat crews have film in the can ready for Obama to win.
Obama is very deceitful.  He wants everyone to think he is above negative campaigning -- but that is because he was ahead.  In the end, he will do anything to win, even if it means ties to terroists and an anti-white, anti-American pastor/church.  He uses everyone to advance his career and he doesn't care who it is.  Then when he gets where he wants, he pretends he is above it all.  He is arrogant and egotistical and doesn't care at all about the people, just his own career.
Vote Hillary 2008 - she will fight for us
Today we are facing a tremendous challenge in this country, the economy is dead, credibility around the world is in its worst in years,  all the intent to bring troop back is failing and people are destroying each other by blaming and accusing each other with one purpose, to get votes.

When I was looking Michelle Obama few days ago, she look so angry, and I will say even furious.  What is going on with those candidates and their spouses?
One thing I hate about all this drama is that you cannot say anything about Obama because his supporters immediately turn it to be racism, when they are criticize for what Obama said or does, it is a negative attack.  FOR GOD SAKE, OBAMA IS NOT GOD. I know many of you are desperate for a black president, butlet’s be fair, let’s be honest; it is the safety, the future of our country that we are playing with.
STOP GENDER POLORIZING OR FOCUS ON RACE AND SO ON, lets face the fact and criticize what we have to criticize without becoming nasty against the other person,  and sadly, when I Read people comments here, MOST NASTY COMMENTS COME FROM OBAMA’S SUPPORTERS.
That is sick, evil and dangerous.  That is why I haven’t been convinced that Obama can unify this country.
In the beginning of this race, I would have voted for either Clinton or Obama.  However, Clinton has shown she is only thinking of herself, and will say or do anything to win.  She  has no integrity and I do not trust her.  She is schizophrenic in her actions: one time driping with honey, and the other attacking.  Obama has been consistent, even tempered, has the same messages, and is honest.  He has my vote.
There's another factor in Obama's success that no one is looking at.  He's surged ahead despite being piled on by four people--Hillary, Bill, Chelsea and John McCain.  Stop and think about that!

Has McCain made a private deal with Hillary since that's who he and the rest of the GOP really, really want to run against?

GO OBAMA!
Go OBAMA, Marion Berry for VP, legalize crack.

So Obama the candidate that is above politics as usual? Obama is running $4m of attack ads against Clinton in PA alone.

What happened to the rhetoric of hope?
What happened to the rhetoric of change?
What Happened is that Obama is about to loose PA.. Now he is willing to compromise his values even  collapse his values because he just wants to win.
Anne, PA
I thought Obama was all about a positive campaign? Appears he isn't. I'm sure his supporters will have all the excuses handy to tell us why Obama behaves just like Hillary.
Obama is like the shinny new car.  After awhile it gets dents and the shiny wears off and the wheels fall off.  It is time for the wheels of the Obamamobile to fall off.

                 Hillary 2008
Barack is campaigning in her own back yard these past few days. He will probaly cut into another base of her supporters, even if only a bit, that hurts her, not him. I believe the rural voters who may have been put off by Barack will be impressed that he is continuing to show up, speak to them, and answer their 'hard' questions.

Obama '08

                 Hillary 2008
Everyone keeps talking about how Obama has "outspent" Clinton in advertising. Well, that shouldn't matter. Clinton literally has had DECADES to establish herself and her name all over the country. Obama is just getting started and if he has to go gangbusters in 6 weeks in Pennsylvania that's what he needs to do to get his name out there. It says more about Hillary that after being in the public eye for her so called "35 years" that she isn't cake walking this nomination.
Undecideds may break for Hillary, but it will be interesting to see what happens with Obama's numbers.  Many college students, blacks, and new registrants/crossovers are not included in the polls.  The Phily suburbs will make or break this for Obama, and there are more educated voters there than in "Pennsyltucky" so the odds favor Obama in the 'burbs as well.
Who are you kidding, even is Hillary wins by more point than 5 she is still a loser.  I see all the news people are doing their best to keep this going.  People remember who is driving these numbers and why they are, money plain and simple.  Before the last few weeks we heard nothing except how good Obama was doing, now we keep hearing all the bad he is carrying.  But it's the same old stuff all the time, just repeated so the media can keep this going for their gain.
I hope Obama can knock her out in PA.  I am ready for this to end and for Barack Obama to be our "NEW" next leader.  I just know he is the one to bring this country back together again.  Obama will be able to bring back the respect our country has lost under Bush and Clinton and their abuses of the highest office in our country.  Our economy will definately get better under Obama, and for proof, just look at how he's managed his finances in this campaign compared to Clinton. Clinton and McCain will just be more of the same old Washington.  I too, am sick of the Clintons (and Bush)!

Obama '08!!!!!!!
Vote Hillary--she has the ability to turn the economy around.  Thus money in your wallet.

Vote Obama--he is good at emptying wallets.

Hillary the candidate who understands the middle class and the problems they have.

                   Hillary 2008
Its funny...everyone talks about how Obama can't get a higher percentage of the white vote or older folks or blue collar folks.  Well, let's be fair about it.  She is getting pummeled by the African American vote and youth vote and college educated vote.  If she can't get the African American vote, she is doomed in any general election because the black vote is THE most reliable vote for Democrats.  Her and husband Bill have done some major damage with the rank and file black voters, and if these folks see Obama losing because of superdelegates or the fact that Hillary has dragged Obama down into the gutter with her to win at all costs, she will not get these folks back...most likely they will not be motivated to return to the polls for her.
I hope that Hillary Clinton wins this tuesday , & goes on to win the Nomination & become the Precidental candidate , ALL THE WAY FOR Hilllary008
Campdog
Hillary is Ughhh...a despicable liar. If you waiting on her to be a true Rocky, you won't suffocate.
Hillary covertly uses the race card and fear mongering to polarize and overtly exploits gender to garnish her candidacy and now class.
The nomination should not be about either; it should be competency, trust, and problems facing our nation. This is why I won’t vote for Hillary’s deceptive, polarizing, tactics. Barack, apart from his speech about race, has never engendered race. He just so happened to have been born Black.
She won't quit; because wants voters to  pay her campaign debts; not because she cares or feels she can win, I think.
Barack doesn’t take money from lobbyist. There is a difference between a person who works as a cash station clerk, a secretary, a chemist, or any other employee and a lobbyist of an oil company. I am nurse I gave. Does that mean I am lobbyist?
Think:
(1) Outsourcing of jobs to India and China,
(2) Unanswered questions about Bill Clinton work to promote the Colombia Free Trade deal
(3) Bosnia and Ireland whoppers
(4) Norman Hsu, $1,100.00 to Hillary
(5) Upcoming Peter Paul fraud trial April 25, 2008 against Hillary for campaign fraud. You'll get your fresh oxygen then.
(6) 200,000 New York jobs promised but never gotten just like healthcare.
(7) Lied to Ohio about NAFTA
Think smartly especially PA Vote Obama give change a try.

If memory serves six weeks the talk was of a "substantial" Hillary win of 10-20 points.
For many observers of the state, anything less than a 57-42 win would be dismal for team Hillary.
Given Hillary 10 point win in the Ohio vote but only a 52-48 delegate win I can only speculate at how he upcoming 54-44 vote win coupled with her  8 delegate margin, or another 52-48 margin is just another copy of an election that, in the final analysis brought Hillary no closer to the nomination.
We will see mighty spin from the MSM as the confetti drops and Hillary is proclaimed the comeback kid once more for failing to marshal enough support to close the deal and maintain her lead in at least one state this primary season.
I don't care who can "close the deal".  I care who is most qualified to lead this country and that is Senator Hillary Clinton who has worked for years to improved the lives of those less fortunate and has the experience and best advisors (Bill) that the Democratic Party can offer.

www.no2barackobama.com
Why such harsh language Carol Smith. These people are both Democrats remember, and Senators that have serviced our country with honor. Keep the nasty comments to yourself.

GO HILLARY 08
First rant of the day posted by MSNBC and it went to an Obama supporter.

Hillary Clinton - a better plan for the economy, health care and Iraq.  Experience and Leadership.

Clinton 2008!!!!
Face it... Obama is just another slick politician, masquerading as an agent of change. The only thing he has going for him is that he has no record to be critical of, because he hasn't ever stood up for anything. His supporters seem to be unwilling to take a close look at their candidate, mostly because of their "vote against the incumbents" mentality. The likelihood of a populist changing the current system from the top down is pretty daggone slim.

Am I bitter? No... I'm a Republican from the T of Pennsylvania who would love to see the elitist's roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty, rather than simply making vauge promises to try and get votes.

Get out there and get some things accomplished before you come to our state and try to sell us with all you phony emotion driven appeals.
There are a lot of us who can't wait for Hillie to finally admit she's lost.  I can't wait for her to just shut up, either, that's just me.  It's a dream because I don't think she's going to do either for a very long time.  We've all got our crosses to bear...and having her be the nominee would be a double-cross, know what I mean super-delegates?
Paul v. Clinton Media Blackout?
Why does there appear to be a media blackout on the CLINTON FRAUD TRIAL that starts APRIL 25, 2008?

"While Hillary Clinton battles Barack Obama on the campaign trail, a judge in Los Angeles is quietly preparing to set a trial date in a $17 million fraud suit that aims to expose an alleged culture of widespread corruption by the Clintons and the Democratic Party..."
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=56868

So far the only thing that seems to make sense is that the main stream media is loving the ratings they're getting from Hillary staying in the race and, thus, the advertising dollars they're raking in as a result.

Does anyone have any other thoughts why this is not being covered?
It's time for the voters of PA to do the correct thing and vote Obama to victory so we can wrap up this primary sideshow and get on to the real deal, beating Tailhook Johnny in November.  I've heard enough from the shrill spinster Hillary to last me ten lifetimes and now is the time to send her packing.

Go Obama!
How can any middle class Pennsylvanian vote for someone who is quoted as saying "screw 'um"? This supports the say anything to win theme. Sorry HRC supporters as a lifelong health care provider I worry about the multiple personalities.
NO MENTION OF HILLARY TAPES BASHING MOVE -ON AND ACTIVIST DEMOCRATS AND LYING ABOUT THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN!!!

ET TU MSNBC?
NO MENTION OF HILLARY TAPES BASHING MOVE -ON AND ACTIVIST DEMOCRATS AND LYING ABOUT THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN!!!

ET TU MSNBC?
Oh, PLEASE!!!! Enough of this "poor O'Bama" whining! Sigh....he IS ARROGANT! He is MEAN-SPIRITED! He says one thing & does another!
MASNB is nothing but an pro-O'Bama TOOL! Matthews got his ass in a sling for his obnoxious OVERT pro-O'Bama rah-rah to the point that he lost ALL CREDIBILITY! Then, they had to make Oberman their "attack dog" & pull Matthews back. JEEZ!!!! Yet Oberman was always the one who shouts at how biased FNC is!!!!! So.......Oberman NOW is loosing his credibility!
I AM SOOOOO TIRED OF SEEING O'BAMA TALKING HEAD AXELROD ON MORNING JOE THAT I COULD JUST THROW UP!!!!!! ENOUGH!!!!!!!!

So let me get this straight:  In order for Obama to prove that he's not negative, he has to lose the nomination to Hillary?

Hillary can go negative, causing Obama to drop in the polls when he doesn't strike back (as he did in the debates, causing him to lose the nomination, - only then will you be satisfied that he ran a good and decent campaign?

Sen. Clinton campaign has been negative from day one.  They depended on Sen. Obama not to respond to their negative adds.  Media harrased him repeatedly that he could not take a punch or throw one.  Other media said don't go negative.  Bottom line since Sen. Clinton keeps throwing negative punches Sen. Obama has a right to defend himself.

Her recent endorsement from the Conservative Millionaire who accused her and President Clinton of Murder, ran paper after paper to ensure his impeachment and rentlessly covered Whitewater to attempt to bring the Clintons down, shows she will do anything to win.  She even went to him and gave an interview last month.  It' like making a deal with the----------------
No matter what happens tomorrow, the result will be the same.  Barack Obama will be the democratic nominee, and eventually president.

One thing that really is troubling is that Hillary Clinton made it this far with absolutely no leadership qualities whatsoever.
You Can Bet the RNC has a well prepared Swift Boat Attach of "Hillary's Baggage" that she acknowledged.  No stone will go unturned.   For anyone to assume that they will overlook the Clinton's Baggage they are liging in dream land.  As she her self said she has more than any politician.
