First thoughts: Hillary's race to lose

*** Hillary’s race to lose: A new MSNBC/McClatchy/Pittsburgh Post-Gazette poll suggests things are staying fairly competitive in Pennsylvania. This survey of 625 likely Dem primary voters was conducted Thursday and Friday, and it shows Clinton leading Obama by five points, 48%-43%. So what happens on Tuesday? Looking inside the poll's demographics, the highest undecided totals are in the more rural parts of the state -- and that's not good news for Obama. In the so-called "T" region of the state (almost everything between Philly and Pittsburgh), Clinton leads 51%-37% with 11% undecided; this is one of the few demographic groups sporting double-digit undecided. Two other interesting crosstabs with high undecideds also signal the potential that the undecided vote will break for Clinton. Among bowlers (24% of the electorate) and gun owners (38% of the electorate), Clinton leads big among these cultural conservatives: She's up 54%-33% among bowlers and 53%-28% among gun owners. So while the poll shows Clinton with a narrow -- and arguably narrowing -- lead, the clues inside the numbers indicate this is her race to lose and that her lead could expand.

*** Will it be five points or more? Should tomorrow’s primary end up as close as this poll suggests (i.e., five points or less), then this means many of these undecided potential Clinton voters decided to stay home. If they come to the polls, she could see her lead climb to more than five points. And this seems to be why Obama has gone negative in the past couple of days: to keep these undecideds away. He might have also sharpened his tone a bit to beat back the growing post-debate perception that he was looking weak. After all, the undecided voter in Pennsylvania looks to be the type of voter that wants to see a strong walkin' and talkin' candidate. So here’s the game on Tuesday -- it’s not if Clinton will win, but how big will her victory be. She'd like to net more than 200,000 in the popular vote, which she would only get with both a large turnout (approximately 2 million total) and a 10-point-plus victory.

*** Practice makes perfect: For all the recycled Clinton-Obama bickering this past weekend -- over health care, who’s being more negative, and who’s saying nice things about Republicans or using GOP talking points -- Democrats should be encouraged by what they're seeing in terms of the general election, at least when it comes to the blocking and tackling of politics. Their rapid response teams of both these campaigns are well oiled and battle tested. And as Newsweek reported, Team Obama is expanding its rapid response squad for the general. But the same can’t be said for team McCain, which isn’t quite sure whether its opponent will be Obama or Clinton and which hasn’t engaged in all-out political fight since Florida back in January.

*** Biting the hand that feeds you? The McCain campaign is known for its love of the media, but there may be no more vicious campaign to deal with when it thinks its media lovers have scorned them. Just check out McCain adviser Mark Salter’s reaction to yesterday’s Washington Post piece looking at McCain’s temper. “In sum, this is one of the more shoddy examples of journalism I've ever encountered,” he said. “But for the infamous NYT story, I'd say it was the worst smear job on McCain I'd ever seen." This is the McCain campaign’s plan to combat what is going to be a much more hostile press than they ever imagined. The question is whether the campaign will grow thicker skin or whether the relationship between McCain and the media will simply deteriorate. One other thing: The pushback on the story was bizarre for another reason. It may have been a story that was somewhat ignored in the runup to Pennsylvania and, frankly, the premise wasn't all that new. In fact, McCain has become very adept at answering this question. But the Salter response was so brutal, it almost dares folks to find stories on McCain's temper -- something we're guessing most of the press corps wasn't all that interested in pursuing.

*** Another week, another McCain tour: Speaking of McCain, he begins his Time for Action Tour from Selma, AL, where he gives a speech this morning at the Edmund Pettus Bridge -- one of the landmarks of the civil-rights movement -- and then he will visit other parts of the state. “The beaten and dispersed army on Edmund Pettus Bridge had conquered something after all - the indifference of too many Americans to their courageous struggle for the basic rights of American citizenship,” McCain will say, according to excerpts released by his campaign. “In America all things are possible, even a civilization as great as the one envisioned by Dr. King and John Lewis. But we are practical people, and most of us are honest, and we know we have a ways to go. This week, I will be traveling to places in America that aren't enjoying the prosperity many other parts of America enjoy, but where people are walking a long, hard road to make sure that their children will know the opportunities that other American children possess.”  Those places include Youngstown, OH (where he will be Tuesday), Prestonsburg, KY (Wednesday), and New Orleans (Thursday). By the way, McCain’s tour this week is a good counter program to whoever loses Pennsylvania -- meaning he'll be talking to either white working-class voters that Obama will need or poor blacks that Clinton will need.

*** The woman in red? The official March fundraising numbers are out. They are basically meaningless numbers -- since much of the money has already been spent -- but going into April, Obama had more than $40 million in cash to spend in the primary, after raising approx. $41 million. As for Clinton, her March fundraising report has just gone online, but we don't yet know the primary/general split of the $20 million she raised or the primary/general split of the $31 million in cash on hand. Yet at least $22 million of that $31 million is designated for the general, leaving Clinton less than $10 million to spend at the end of March. By the way, when you factor in Clinton's $10 million+ debt, she was technically operating in the red at the end of March.

*** The delegate count: Over the weekend, Clinton picked up the backing of Ohio congressman Tim Ryan, and Obama got the support of the Nebraska Democratic Party chairman. In keeping in contact with the campaigns, we also adjusted Obama's number up one more, as another DNC member is backing him. The superdelegate count now is: Clinton 262, Obama 237. Obama leads by 141 in the overall count: 1,654-1,513. He also leads by 166 in the pledged delegate count: 1,417-1,251.

*** On the trail: The day before the Pennsylvania primary, Clinton holds rallies in Scranton, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia; Obama attends a town hall in McKeesport, holds a rally in Pittsburgh, and makes a pre-taped appearance on Comedy Central’s Daily Show; and Cindy McCain co-hosts the View. Also, Bill Clinton joins his wife during her stops in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and Michelle Obama joins her husband in McKeesport and Pittsburgh.

Countdown to Pennsylvania: 1 day
Countdown to North Carolina, Indiana: 15 days
Countdown to Election Day 2008: 197 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 274 days

I predict that Hillary will win by 14% or more tomorrow.

The Pope's visit was nice.  How nice to hear someone say God Bless America as the Pope did. The Pope made his point and he didn't raise his voice and he didn't jump up and down to make his point.  Then you think of Obama's pastor saying God Dam America.  The Rev. Wright instructed Obama for 20+ years and I think what he was taught is deep rooted in Obama.  We don't need someone in the white house that is so far off the mark.

                Hillary 2008
Hilliary may have mispoken about the Bosnia affair--the first time.  The three other times were calculated lies.  How can we ever trust her?
Is it possible that the media will eventually ask McCain a tough question or criticize him in some way?  I doubt it but I suppose anything's possible.  My guess is that this outburst from McCain will intimidate the media.  It's McCain's version of "I'm not going to be your friend anymore unless you write nice things about me" and the media will dutifully comply
Operating her campaign in the RED ! Does'nt that say enough to all you undecided voter's in Pennsylvania & elsewhere? Where in your mind can you say that Hillary is Ready on Day 1, when she has No idea how to run an Effecint campaign. She Won't Pay past debts in other states. It's Ridiculus to think otherwise, America.
Senator Obama demonstrates a certain naivete when he insists that everyone would buy health insurance if it were affordable. Those in the health care industry can attest that a certain percentage of young people who could well afford insurance choose to spend their money on other things. The area in which this makes the greatest differece to the health care industry as a whole is in trauma care.

Senator Clinton's plan includes subsidies for those who truly cannot afford health care and is designed so that the cost will be only a certain percentage of income.

So long as there is a substantial pool of uninsured -- whatever the reasons -- health insurance carriers can continue to claim that costs must be high because the risk is not widely enough spread. At the same time, health care costs will remain artificially high to make up for losses in revenue from those who need care but who cannot pay for it.

What Hillary is seeking to do is to shift the burden of cost from the doctors and hospitals, to shift the burden of bankruptcy from the ordinary person and on to the insurance industry, one of the most profitable industries in America.

As with so many of Sen Obama's policy positions, he sounds moderate and reasonable until one reviews the practical consequences. Go Hillary!!!
She is one of the finest women to ever serve our country.  Regardless of all the "sexist" comments that appear on these boards.

She is the best hope for our country!

Let's see: Who would you rather have a beer with--probably Obama. Who would you rather go to a ballgame with...probably Obama. Who would you rather BBQ with---probably Obama......sound like a pattern here??? (Think W)

Been down that road before.

Clinton 08
Looking a little deeper into the fund raising data from March there is an interesting item.
The Obama campaign registered more than 10 million in donations on the 1st of the month, indicating a carry over from the prior month.
Hillary posted nearly 10 million in donations on the last day of the month, indicating a bringing forward of donations to pump up the March numbers.
the reality is that Obama is very strong, standing up against the clinton machinery that has been running for 20years. IF it was Hillary leading, Obama would have been forced out before Pennsylvania. I give credit to Obama.

On the other hand, I am happy that Clinton has stayed on - she should be commended for providing 'free training' for Obama aganist McCain. Clinton's kitchen sink strategy is actually strengthening Obama.

Vote Obama 08!!!
The money doesn't matter!!!!!  If Obama had shown to be as fiscally irresponsible in a year where the economy was the key issue you guys would have been all over him.  She is 10 million in debt up from last months 8 million.  It doesn't matter.  Give me a break.  This is the person who will turn the economy around.   She can't manage a 200+ million dollar campaign effectively
Hillary by 10 in PA and it don't mean a thing.
Delegates + Popular vote had better equal Super delegates.
The Penn. primary race comes down to this;

Vote Hillary, if you want a Democrat in the White House in Jan 2009.

Vote Obama, if you want a Republican in the White House in 2009.

Obama may, and I hope and pray not, win the nomination but HE WILL NOT BE PRESIDENCY!
In all seriousness, you broke your crosstabs down to BOWLERS?!?  This campaign has officially jumped the shark.

Please finish this Pennsylvania, for the rest of us.
Why does there appear to be a media blackout on the CLINTON FRAUD TRIAL THAT STARTS IN THREE DAYS?

"While Hillary Clinton battles Barack Obama on the campaign trail, a judge in Los Angeles is quietly preparing to set a trial date in a $17 million fraud suit that aims to expose an alleged culture of widespread corruption by the Clintons and the Democratic Party..."
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=56868

So far the only thing that seems to make sense is that the main stream media is loving the ratings they're getting from Hillary staying in the race and, thus, the advertising dollars they're raking in as a result.

Does anyone have any other thoughts why this is not being covered?
Given the current delegate and popular vote count, Clinton cannot truly remain viable unless she wins by a margin well into the double digits. Because of Obama's earlier string of victories, 5 percent just won't cut it. Why has this fact disappeared from media coverage? It certainly should be mentioned in a story like this.
Hey Jon, "She won't rule the White House not with integrity but with hypocrisy"

FTFY

She's done. Out of money. It's practically unpossible for her to go on. She wants to win on a technicality. You thought the debategate backlash was fierce? I can't even imagine what would happen.
I'll admit, I had a better opinion of the Clintons  before this campaign, but I prefer to support my guy without bashing Hillary. (I do wish she'd stop channeling Sean Hannity though.) As Dems, lets stick to the positives, and work together to make sure we get the White house back. I respect McCain, even admire him sometimes(for a repub) but not as president. We need to start healing this "rift" now, not come june. I'll pledge to vote Democratic come November, will you? (please)
Obama's lead goes on.  Pennsylvania will come and go as will the rest of the primaries and Mrs. Clinton can't catch up.  Barack Obama can and will beat the republicans in the fall, unless the public decides that Americans dying carrying out an occupation of a nation that was no threat to us is justified.
"poor blacks that Clinton will need."  This sounds a little racist Chuck.  But ofcorse, your doing all you can for Clinton these days--talking points, etc. . .  all from the Clinton perspective.

Well, If Obama wanted to Negative, he could bring up Peter Paul, Monica, etc. . . the list is too numerous to count. But of course, Obama isn't really negative.

Perhaps what you meant to say, is that Obama is finally responding to all the hundreds of negative attacks Clinton and  THE MEDIA have given Obama, with a few of his own.

'The lady in red", that's Hillary. Red-faced, and angry shouting, "shame on you, and meet me in Ohio". Red-handed, as in caught in her Bosnia lie on tape telling it, and on tape being exposed. As in seeing red, because she's loosing, when she fully expected to wear a red velvet cloak, like a queen, during her swearing in ceremony. And lastly, because her campaign is broke, in the red financially, and her stiffed vendors are having to make notations in their ledgers in red ink, because she refuses to pay them.

What red state would vote for Hillary Clinton?

Obama '08
First Read,

Who are you to pronounce the undecideds as Clinton's. Factor in her negatives, and think again.
First rant of the day posted by MSNBC and it went to an Obama supporter.

Hillary Clinton - a better plan for the economy, health care and Iraq.  Experience and Leadership.

Clinton 2008!!!!
What happen to the man of hope and inspiration?  He has become the second coming of Bush/Chaney, don't ask, distortions and lies.  His answers on his associates, is lame, "Oh! he just lives in the neighborhood'.  Why does he associate with know terrorist, indited criminals and racist Pastors.  Where does all that donation money really come from?  Is he buying the Presidency?  If he is, buying it for whom?  How does he really get all those young 18 to 25 generation vote for him and at what cost?
Why would you vote for Hil-liar-y lies? Many people are just scared of a African American President.
In the final analysis the choice for democrats is clear:
Do we choose a young, inexperienced, inmatured, untested, rancorous individual, who has close relationships with individuals who hate America?
or
Do we choose a patriotic, matured, tested, strong individual who loves America and americans of all races?

The recent polls reflect the fact that America is making the reasonable choice: Hillary Clinton
"By the way, when you factor in Clinton's $10 million+ debt, she was technically operating in the red at the end of March."

Man, it isn't technical.  She owed $10.3 million, and she only had $8 million to pay it with.  She was actually, financially in the red.

And it isn't "by the way."  It's the reason she won't be able to campaign after May 6.  It's the way her backers are going to make her back out.  It's the ball game.
I was born and raised in Pennsylvania and now live in North Carolina. I only wish that I could vote tomorrow instead of two weeks from now. Please, Pennsylvania, vote Obama '08. A Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton sequence cannot be in our best interest.
The media and republicans continue to say that the poor and working class democrats do not vote for people based on changing and improving their circumstances and lives....they vote for people based on the wrong reasons...they add...democrats vote for the wrong people over....and over...and over again.....there is information to backup what they....This is just sad and scary!

All the years that McCain and Clinton had to help PA...where were....Why did Hillary Clinton not seek a job in PA to help the people there instead of NY???? Why did Clinton not go to PA when Bill left office....her public service experience could have been used to lift PA...since the economic indicators that have worsened even as the economy has expanded...more people without health care, people losing jobs, more people in poverty, real wages declining, and prices rising. Where was Hillary Clinton when PA and Ohio needed her...but, will PA cast votes based on the wrong reasons again...bowling & guns....?

THE WORLD LAUGHS ON...THE CLINTON SHOW WILL RUN THIS COUNTRY INTO THE GROUND....JUST ADD A LITTLE FRAUD & FRAUD CHARGES... AND WE ARE READY FOR THE GAME TO BEGIN....
At this point, I can't see why anyone would vote for Clinton.
She grossly mis-manages her campaign, but is expected to fix the economy?

That does not make sense.

Look at her campaign.  Its in shambles.  She's broke. She underestimated Obama; she put everything into Feb 5, 2008 and lost; she can't pay her creditors; She touts being anti-NAFTA but stands to gain $800,000 fromt the Colombia Free Trade deal, something sevretely supported by Mark Penn and so was her husband.

That is disengenous on the ISSUES; that's not negative attacking because its true.

Finally, and I cant say this enough.  Clinton says that she can deliver on healthcare, but that is demonstrably not true.  When she first tackled this issue in 1993 and 1994, her HUSBAND was POTUS and she had a Democratically controlled Congress and STILL couldn't get Healthcare passed.

What does that tell you?
McCain is McNasty with his temper...we don't a person with a firety temper with his finger on the nuke button! In fact, he might wet himself in his Depends and accidently hit the button thinking he's calling Cindy to change him.
Obama wins - we'll find he's responsible for most of the newly registered voters in Pennsylvania and will off an upset or reduce the margin to such a small one that Hillary pulls out after North Carolina.  You heard it here first.
Natalie, the campaign immediately repudiated that statement about the wreath.  If we're going to get into a back and forth about what surrogates have said, well...I don't think you want to go there.
NO MENTION OF HILLARY TAPES BASHING MOVE -ON AND ACTIVIST DEMOCRATS AND LYING ABOUT THE WAR IN AFGHANISTAN!!!

ET TU MSNBC?
joan in chicago -- I share your strong desire to avoid another "Bush" type in the White House, but I think you've targeted the wrong candidate.  What are the most outstanding characteristics of the way Bush has governed?  dishonesty, refusal to answer tough questions, sticking to a plan even when it's clear it's not working, secrecy in reaching plans, confiding only in a close, tight group that agree with and compliment him and ignoring others, a 'paternalistic' attitude: "I know what's best for you no matter what you think".  Who does this sound like?  Not Obama.  Listen to Hillary's total non-answer to the question about Bosnia 'misstatements' and then to a typical Bush non-answer to a question he finds difficult: they don't even try to make sense -- relying on the stupidity of many Americans and insult the intelligence of the rest of us.  Like you, I do NOT want any more of this sort of leadership.  OBAMA '08
"how many people would be outraged if Obama did like the "Women for Hillary" campaign drive and had "Blacks for Obama?" "--Carlo, Baton Rouge, LA

Carlo, I am all for truth in labeling; I wouldn't be offended at all.  If only there had been an "Idiots for Bush" group things might have turned out differently. I am hoping someone will form a "Warmongers for McCain" group.
I truly believe deep in my heart that the comments from Jon, TX are very true and perhaps a few things were left out. If it were not for them I probably would have voted for her and the fact that I thought her husband was a good President overall.  I just saw a Clinton side in this campaign that completely turned me off.  As a young black man & veteran I always felt somewhat in touch with the Clintons but I've come to see that we (Americans) are so far apart from them.  For some odd and strange reason I feel a sense of betrayal. Maybe I will contemplate that a little more when I have the time.  I doubt it I have a lot of canvassing work to do here in NC for Barack Obama.

Pennsylvania voters--Please do not vote for Hillary. She LIES about sniper fire in Bosnia and when she gets caught, says she was "tired." Do you want her to answer the phone at 3AM? Won't she be tired then?

Join members of Bill Clinton's administration and support Barack. People like Greg Craig (lawyer for Bill during his impeachment), Anthony Lake (Bill's National Security Advisor), Robert Reich (Labor Secy) and Bill Richardson (UN Ambassodor)all support Barack. What does that tell you? They know the inner workings of the Clinton Team and it is not pretty.
Hill will win by 5 if she is LUCKY.
Even if she wins by 10 she only gains 8 delegates..

Tim Russert is the only one who has a brain.
The real story is.....
OBAMA BEAT HILLARY WHEN SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO WIN THIS HANDS DOWN.

Why support someone who has run one of the worst campaigns in history???
If Obama is our nominee, I'll be voting McCain. I love Hillary.

Prediction:  she wins PA by 9, West V by 11, Indiana by 3, lose NC by only 6. Then see what the Obama robots think about that.
Everytime I hear an Obama speech, he ends it with "God Belss America."  Can he get credit for his own words rather than being condemned for other peoples' words?

I'm just wondering...
I have to say the HRC supporters 'parrot' their candidate very well. I have become increasingly convinced the Clinton campaign has e-mailed a 'talking points' sheet to all her 'minah birds' and they are very good at repeating exactly what she has told them to say. There is not one original comment on her by any of her minion.

Her comments about leaving Iraq regardless of what the Generals tell her, because it is HER decision and she will tell THEM what to do regardless of the real situation; her comments about a 'security umbrella basically saying she will strike back at Iran if they attack any of our allies in the Mid-east leading us into multiple wars; her lack of integrity; destroying her own party to secure her own political ambitions; her husband(I did not have sex with that woman, Bill); unvetted explanations about her ties with Columbia - noone to this date has fully discussed or investigated what really happened there - and her multitude of sneaky, underhanded, blatatly illegally associations and dealings over the years, make me question why anyone would be defending or voting for this woman.

I understand most of her supporters expect the Clintons' to be nasty. I truly believe that is why the support her. But you CANNOT have it both ways. Just like HRC.....if Obama does not eat her alive during a debate, he is weak. If he then brings up the TRUTH, then he is being negative. Let's face it, her 'minah birds' would never support Senator Obama. The Clintons' have done a fantastic job of feeding them how and what they should think and say, and unfortunately they have lapped up the information, digested it and by osmosis, absorbed every single disgusting, nasty bite.

This is not REALITY TV. This is REALITY!!!
I am praying to the good lord that the people in pennsylvania really see thru Obama. He is not what he represents. His association with the shady charaters is truly unacceptable or healthy for America. his attendance to the Million man march with Farrkhan, his very close association with his mentor of Twenty years Wright, all these and more have never been seen from a future president. We need to be careful for he is applying for the most powerful position of the United States of America. Just these two characters are American Haters which can bring us all despair.
