'Just let me eat my waffle'

Posted: Monday, April 21, 2008 1:41 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
SCRANTON, PA -- Chomping down on sausage and waffles at Glider's Diner in Scranton today, with his Pennsylvania BFF (Sen. Bob Casey) at his side, Obama avoided commenting on former President Jimmy Carter's meeting with Hamas.

Asked by a reporter if he had heard that Carter reported a positive outcome from the meeting, Obama looked sternly at the reporter in question and said, "Why can't I just eat my waffle?"

Asked again by the reporter, Obama bit -- not at the question but into a butter covered bite of Glider's specialty over-size Belgian waffles. With a wink this time he said, "Just let me eat my waffle."

VIDEO: Sen. Barack Obama refuses to answer a question about former President Jimmy Carter's meeting with Hamas.

Since Carter announced he was meeting with Hamas, Obama has criticized him for meeting with a terrorist organization. He has also been attacked by McCain for not condemning Carter's visit more sternly.

At a meeting with Jewish leaders in Philadelphia last week, Obama told the audience there that while he thought it was appropriate to meet with countries like Syria and Iran because they were states, despite their hostilities towards Israel. However, he said, Hamas was a terrorist organization and so did not justify a meeting.

He repeated those reasons at a town hall in Reading yesterday, when asked by a voter about his thoughts on Carter's trip.

"I think it's very hard for us to be able to broker a peace deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians if a certain portion of their actors or the people who are representing the Palestinians don't even recognize the people on the other side of the table as being able to say there," he said.

Obama's trip to Glider's included glad-handing with voters and listening to a trumpet solo by a 17-year-old high school student. Obama tapped his foot as the kid riffed a jazzy tune on his trumpet.

The Scranton diner stop is part of the campaign's final push for voters in Pennsylvania before tomorrow's primary. Obama will also hold a town hall in the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh suburbs and a rally in Pittsburgh today.

So Mr. snotty arrogant Obama won't answer questions already? What a surprise. This con man is the ultimate fraud. As a dem, I refuse to vote for him.
Ewww...nasty ass reporters breathing and spitting over his food.
More bad journalism.

CARTER HASN'T ENDORSED OBAMA!!!!
I cannot seriously believe that this story has been picked up and posted in the mainstream media world.  We've taken one of the most serious elections in many people's lifetime and turned it into a television serious where the "catch-phrase" becomes the episode title.  Did you see the "let me eat my Waffle" episode?  What about last week's "Bitter" episode, which followed "Crazy Preacher sweeps-week"

2009 just cannot get here fast enough.
In the desire for fair coverage First Read, please post this.  This is video of Ed Rendell lavishing praise on Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam.  Obama has been getting hammered for being unpatriotic so this must mean that Rendell is unpatriotic and by extension so is Clinton.  Please post this post.

Senator Obama, since you've been compared to JFK, and since JFK was a Catholic, and the Pope used to be a Hitler Youth, do you agree with the Nazi's?
Told y'all that Obama was nasty to the core!
WHy no reporting on Obama's INCREDIBLE rebound from one point down to 7 points up in just two days in the Gallup poll.  10 this shows his resiliancy; 2) you over reported the blip down so you gotta at least mentiont his, yeah?
I think it is rude to interrupt a person's meal.  Somebody should teach these reporters some manners.
Pat Huntington NY (Sent Monday, April 21, 2008 1:52 PM)

Pat you sound desperate.  He wants to eat; yeah blame him because he is hungry.  I guess that's fair, Hillary was tired and just needed some sleep, upon dreaming she was under attack in Bosnia.  What a joke, give it up!

I want to know why on youtube, Gov Ed Rendell was praising Louis Farrakhan, when he wanted to appear to bringing the religions and people together.  Politicians at their finest.
Damn now the Clintonoids cant even understand the man wants to eat a Meal.If the reporter had done his job he would have seen Obama had commented on this subject the day before. Instead he has to be an insensitive prick and pester the man while he is eating breakfast. Another story of substance , good job guys.
Is this news?  You have in the story what is position is from the Reading Rally,,,,  let's report the news
Pat in Huntington

Obama may be nasty, but at least he has enough integrity to pay his campaign bills.  Hillary?  Not so much.  She made 109 million dollars over a ten year period, and she refuses to pay her vendors.  How can anyone support someone like that for President of the United States?

If PA goes for Hillary, they will have buyers remorse.  The Peter Paul trial starts soon.  Imagine, someone accusing Queen Hillary of fraud!  Who would have thought it possible?

Obama in 2008.  Hillary's creditors are endorsing him!

Please. How would you like it if a sleazy reporter was interrupting your breakfast?

I'm sick of this election.
All you small town people in Pennsylvania, remember
how Barack Hussein Obama referred to you to his elitist friends in San Francisco.

All of all don't mean beans to him but he'll prod you like cattle for your vote.
Are we sure it was a reporter and not a Hi'liar'y plant?  She has to attack to divert attention away from her debt, lies and inevitable loss.  I haven't read anything from Pat in Huntinton NY lately.  Maybe it was her.
This can be Obama's tag line if he's ever president. Any tough questions come his way, and he'll say:

"Why can't I just eat my waffle?"
choke on it! You are the wort of the nasty people BO!
Good point Geoff. Maybe Chuck can fill Joe Scarborough in on that.  He was spewing his typical venom at Obama this morning about the 'collapse' of Obama in the poll.  Did he cite the Newsweek poll showing him up almost 20 - no.  I don't have an issue with him bringing up the Gallup info, but he does it with such venom and bias that I find it hard to listen to him anymore.  If it wasn't for Mika & Chuck, I would have stopped watching MSNBC in the mornings a long time ago.
Just let the man eat his breakfast, ok?  He may be the next POTUS - but he still needs to eat.
He uses the same line when he's alone with his wife.
As a Obama supporter I am surprised that he would condemn such a meeting. Yes Hamas uses terror as it's mean of change, which no one should condone. However, Hamas, as a political organization, has been elected into the Palestinian Government in an open and free election. We pushed for it and now we that we don't like the outcome, Politicians are backing away from their own stances to work with the Palestinian Government. Back turning and name calling has only lead to more violence. I am starting to wonder if anyone, including our own elected or soon to be elected officials, wants Peace in the Middle East.
Senator Obama, since you've been compared to JFK, and since JFK was a Catholic, and the Pope used to be a Hitler Youth, do you agree with the Nazi's?
Chuck K, Buffalo, NY (Sent Monday, April 21, 2008 1:52 PM)

Yeah Chuck and Hillary has taken a phrase right out of Joesph Goebbels playbook.  "If you repeat a lie enough times, the masses will believe it."
What a snotty First Read Update. BFF? Could you be any more sarcastic and juvenile? Or are you trying to start a Waffle-gate scandal? You're a journalist. Grow up. Let the man eat his breakfast.
yes, yes, how dare obama eat. putting food in his mouth to avoid hunger...the nerve.
Geoff in Brooklyn (Sent Monday, April 21, 2008 1:53 PM)

Geoff, if ABC's Debate was any example the MSM is in full "see, we aren't in the tank for Obama" mode. Even Chris Mathews of the "funny feeling" up my leg has apparently walked it off and is hedging his PA bets for a Congressional run. Chuck Todd is on Russert with David Gregory talking about how Obama supporters may tear the party apart.
WE all know that Obama closed a double digit Clinton lead.
WE all know that Obama can outspend Clinton and McCain because he has 1.5 million individual donors.
WE all know that this is about a movement not about Obama.
WE all know that the nominee of the party will be the candidate that has won more delegates and the popular vote.
WE all expect that the Super Delegates are keenly aware of the previous point.

Hillary by 10 and it don't mean a thing.
Yes WE Can!
What's next media?  "Wafflegate"?

Get back to us when some real news occurs.
Pat in Huntington NY,

How are you reacting to this video.  It looks like Rendell LOVES Farrakhan so by extenstion so must Clinton.  I guess Clinton and Rendell hate America.  What say you Pat?

Chuck K, Buffalo, NY (Sent Monday, April 21, 2008 1:52 PM)

How stupid, the idiodicy today is far reaching from any intelligence.  Even the Pope knows what right looks like that's why he is where he is today.  Lay off the crack!
"Why can't I eat my waffle?"
Because you are running for President!
Is this the best you can come up with for news today?

There's a LOT out there you know.

DailyKos, Politico, HuffingtonPost... actual news.

MSNBC is fixated on a man interrupted while eating a waffle. Monty Python would be so proud of this shoddiness, because I really wonder if you "news people" realize what satire you've become.

I'd think in an era where alt media is on the rise, you'd get up to speed.

Nothing about Rendell & Farrakhan? HRC's 2 million dollar debt? Her new bright idea of waging unilateral war in the Middle East? Her missing 2007 tax returns? mcCain's health?
Oh for crying out loud.... why can't the reporters just let the guy enjoy his breakfast??  And for the morons who posted all that "ohhh... he's such a snob... he won't even answer questions!" crap; give it rest.  Everyone is entitled to eat a meal without having to talk to reporters.

What happen to the man of hope and inspiration?  Hiding behind a waffle.  That's one way to avoid those hard questions, from the reporters.  You think Obama would praise Carter meeting with Hamas, wasn't it Obama who stated he would meet with these terrorist, when he became President.  After all he does know about terrorist and how to relate to them, doesn't he!
Okay, so reporters are rude and intrusive.  We already knew that.  But, hey, you need spin to create controversy so a man eating breakfast is fair game.  This primary has gone on far too long.

Also, Carter has not endorsed Obama.  Facts, people, facts.
great post patrick, indianapolis. if this was an obama supporter, it'd be on the news every night. ed rendel heaping praise on the nation of islam and farrakhan. it's stunning.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXum_-8I1TA
Only in the Democratic Party is a loss considered a win. Wimpy, whiny, losers. Can't wait to get ahold of Obama in the GE.
Why did this remind me of the paparazzi who chased down Dianne? Asking questions to someone with a mouth full of food, that's classy journalism :)
My goodness. Do you not have anything better to do?
Um, adam, nothing in the article suggested that Carter HAD endorsed Obama.

And personally, I think it's poor form on the part of the reporters to ask questions of the guy while he's eating.  It may be a photo op, but it's still likely breakfast for the guy.
PUUULEASE!

Aswini Anburajan,

Could YOU please give us something that is really NEWS! Like how are you guys coming with getting up to speed on the Paul vs Clinton Civil Fraud Trial that gets started on Friday??  Anybody got a timeline breakdown for us, or an explanation of why Hillary's voice on (video)tape is not to be considered a smoking gun?

I fully expect any candidate to enrich their supporters...not to get sued by them for fraud...

Obama won't have any problem getting a middle class tax break in place for his average $100.00 donors...;)

When a reporter followed Obama in the mens room, Obama said, from his stall in response to a reporter's continued question, "just let me snort my coke"!
When you are running for the highest office in the land, breakfast is second fiddle.

I can imagine Hillary wolfing down a beer and a shot when a reporter asks "Why did Bill cheat on you?"  She would probably spit the drink at the reporter.

Jimmy Carter was the worst president in history.  I predict if either one of these folks (Obama or Hillary) gets elected, i can see $6.00/gallon gasoline, $8.00 a gallon milk and $6.00 a loaf bread.

Something about being a liberal that makes you want to puke.

Hillary Clinton
A Liar for All Seasons
'Told y'all that Obama was nasty to the core! "

Because he wanted to eat his breakfast? Me too, I guess. We're despicable.
did clinton promised you guys somthing? earn your pay report on paul vs clinton court case i dare you be a reporter for a day just one day of your life
In the house I grew up in, you'd lose a finger if you were interrupted while eating.

Let's just pray that the media doesn't find any waffle eatin 60's radicals.  That would be bad for Obama.
Did any of you hear that those were NAFTA waffles, made from flour imported from Mexico? For shame, Obama!
Yet another election year, yet another year of stupid rediculous garbage that the news media pushes as a story.  And people wonder why we get morons like GWB in the White House.  Cause so many idiots eat up all this garbage.

Oh no! Bill Clinton said his wife got tired at 11pm!
Woah! Obama got upset when someone wouldn't leave him alone when he was trying to eat!
OMG! Obama scratched his face! Look he's really flipping Clinton off! OMG!
Did you see that! Clinton supporter sad something stupid!  New headlines!
etc
etc
etc

Enough of this garbage already.  It's the same rediculous crap that we get every year and so many narrow minded idiots vote against their own best interests because of it.  None of this garbage that is being reported is going to do a damn thing about the gas prices, lack of reasonably priced health care, lack of good jobs, a war that never ends, etc.

It's rediculous tabloid politics. And so many of the idiots out there are going to be complete tools and vote for McCain simply out of spite that their candidate lost, even though they will suffer in the end.

If our candidate can't win we'll make sure we vote for the Repub even if he'll drive our national debt even further into the ground giving tax breaks for the rich and screwing the middle class. But hey, we showed the other guy!

Morons.
Any one that would let some jerk reporter interrupt his waffle breakfast is not my kind of president.  I hope the future president ordered seconds.
To those who despise GWB, his policies and administration. I bet you won't "despise" that check for $600-$1200 he'll soon be sending you.
stop & just end the madness....I am beyond tired of this. since HRC wont leave lets vote her out. and let pray the SDs will NOT overturn the power of the people.
