Clinton: Bill said what...?

Posted: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 9:12 AM by Mark Murray

Some legacy fixing? Per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Bill Clinton appeared on WHYY radio (an NPR affiliate), in which he defended comparing Obama to Jesse Jackson right before the South Carolina contest (“No, I think they played the race card on me”), and in which he misstates some of the facts surrounding his comment. Also, at the end of the interview, Bill doesn’t appear to know he’s still on the air when he hurls an expletive at an aide. *** CLARIFICATION *** The way this was written implied that Clinton berated an aide; he didn't. We should have written that Clinton "uttered an expletive to an aide."

Here’s the transcript: INTERVIEWER (RE: Jackson comment): “Do you think that was a mistake, and would you do that again?"

CLINTON: "No. I think that they played the race card on me. And we now know, from memos from the campaign and everything that they planned to do it along. Jesse Jackson -- I said, if you go back to what I said … First of all, there was a conversation that I engaged in that included two African America members of Congress, who were standing right there, who were having the conversation with me. And I said that Jesse Jackson had won a good campaign with overwhelming African American support and white supporters. And this was started off because people didn’t wanna -- they wanted to act like, for reasons I didn’t understand, that Senator Obama didn’t have this African American support, or they thought his white support was better because Jesse Jackson had blue-collar working people, and most of Senator Obama’s support were upscale, cultural liberals. So it was like beneath them to be compared to Jesse Jackson.

"I respect Jesse Jackson. He’s a friend of mine, even though he endorsed Senator Obama. One of his sons and his wife endorsed Hillary. Their whole family’s divided. But his campaign in 1988 was a seminal campaign in American history. It was the first campaign to ever to openly involve gays. Hillary’s chief delegate counter, Harold Ickes, worked his heart out for Jesse Jackson. I frankly thought the way Obama campaign reacted was disrespectful to Jesse Jackson. And I called him and asked him if he found anything offensive, and he just laughed and he said, ‘Of course I don’t. We all know what’s going on.’”

"I mean this is just, you know… You gotta go something to play the race card on me -- my office is in Harlem. And Harlem voted for Hillary, by the way. And I have 1.4 million people around the world, mostly people of color in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and elsewhere, on the world’s least expensive AIDS drugs. I appointed more African American, Hispanic and women judges and U.S. Attorneys than all previous presidents put together and had nine African American Cabinet members.

"I was stating a fact. And it is still a fact. You know, I was amazed that we got almost 20% of the African American vote in South Carolina, and I think it was because we had so many local officials who believed in Hillary and stuck their necks out for her, some of which were threatened with their jobs. But I can see that this used against me, but this was a conversation that occurred early in the morning. We didn’t even know what the vote was gonna be at the time. We were all sitting around drinking coffee. We’d just been to breakfast. We were talking about South Carolina political history. And this was used out of context and twisted for political purposes by the Obama campaign to try to breed resentment elsewhere.

"And, you know, do I regret saying it? No. Do I regret that it was used that way? I certainly do. But you really gotta go something to try to portray me as a racist."

INTERVIER: “OK. Well thank you very much, Mr. President.”

CLINTON: “Thank you. I hope everybody will go out to vote tomorrow. Buh-bye… I don’t think I can take any sh#& from anybody on that, do you?”

The New York Daily News, looking at Clinton’s money troubles, calls the race, “Barack vs. Ba-roke.”

He's come undone!
Liberals, we told you since 1992 that the Clintons were backwater hillbilly types that lie, cheat and steal every chance they got. You didn't believe us, and all that turned out to be true. Now, we're telling you the same types of things about Obama, as he's an out of touch elitist that hasn't done one constructive thing in his life, and now again you don't believe us. What does it take for you to understand these things?
It funny how this person thinks no one remembers the  pain this man put the country through during the '90's...And his wife stood by and said nothing..
They must be smokin' the wrong end of the cigar...
Good people remember the choices and lessons of past are doomed to be repeated unless we stop them...
The reason this is devastating is not because of Bill's expletive, but because he is clearly looking for confirmation from the aide that his new spin on the story means that reporters can't hurt his favorables anymore by asking more questions about it.

Yes, Bill, you've spent an incredible amount of intellectual effort over three months to painstakingly reword the story of your Jackson comments to fool the public into not being offended.  The problem is, Bill,  we can already see through you, and your story only works well if we've already given you the benefit of the doubt.
Oh Bubba Clinton ... you really are a funny guy .. I have to give it to you.

LITSEN CAREFULLY : WE don't think that you are a racist. We believe that you made a calculated decision to inject race into the campaign in order to undermine Obama's candidacy .. AND IT BACKFIRED ON YOU !

Other than that we still think that you were a good president.
Just SUPPORT your wife and quit undermining Obama .. You can do one without ther other can you ?

We also won't take any more sh@t from you either !
dude Bill has gone wacko
I really don't want him anywhere near the White House...honestly he's this close to "we the people" wanting a restraining order on him.  He IS losing it.

For all those people months ago who said he was HER best asset, heavens, they must be choking on those words.

He's scary, she's scary.  And yes, having lived in NYC, gotta get a laugh over those Daily News headlines.

Gotta give Barack some credit, besides trying to keep PA in play, his money spent was an investment on the General and was a strategy to render Clinton absolutely BA-Roke for the remaining contests.

Score 1 for Obama

and take away 100 from Hillary because of Bill.
Bill Clinton did alot for many African Americans while president. However, it does not condone his comments in South Carolina. I understand he might have been upset about the outcome of south carolina and may believe that the African American community owe him because he appointed African American judges. His comments were wrong in South Carolina. This caused the back lash. Obama was losing the African American vote until Clinton's statement. It is important to respect voters decisions and not put them down when you did not receive the outcome you desire.
"and Harlem voted for Hillary" - as I recall the numbers were more than a little suspicious there with Obama getting 0 votes in several Harlem districts. There was supposed to be an investigation and even Bloomberg described the results as "fraudulent". I can't find any information about what came of this? Does anyone know? Why does Bill get to keep claiming Harlem as a victory without any journalists bringing this up?
He's right. A simple "Good morning" from Bill in recent months is construed as racist.  Obama gives the finger to Hillary in his "response speech" to getting sacked in the last (by his choice) debate and nobody blinks.  Sad times we are in.
Give it to 'em Bill! With all the abuse you and Hillary have put up with, it's time to push back. Big win today, bigger wins tomorrow.

YES WE WILL!!!

HILLARY/08
Probably a day too late for this too impact the voting. Bill's just not in practice anymore, and he's out of touch.
They Clinton fact changing has got to stop.  Why does he get away with accusing Obama of, not only blowing his comments out of proportion, but also of basically setting him up to begin with?  He is losing his mind, and hoping nobody checks out his stories.
I think comedy central should gve Bill a 1/2 show like they did with Stewart and Colbert.  He would be "Hillarious".  LMAO
Who the hell are you to say Bill Clinton mis stated anything, Mark?
You're just another media-whore who refuses to tell the truth about Obama's associations with indicted criminals, domestic terrorists, and outspoken racists.
Obama and his surrogates were the ones who played the race card in South Carolina.
All Bill did was defend and campaign for his wife.
Obama's proxies jumped all over the MLK, LBJ thing and blew it comepletely out of context and proportion. They also said things like "she didn't shed any tears for  the victims of Katrina" when  the media made such a big deal out her nano-second show of emotion in New Hampshire.
Was THAT a RACIST remark by Jesse Jr? Of course it was.
But he's associated with Obama, so he's allowed to get away with it.
The press has proven to me what assholes they are during this primary cycle.
They've given Obama a pass on EVERYTHING. Including, his connections today, with a group of revolutionaries who, 30 years ago, killed two police officers, and a security guard and who's primary purpose was to overthrow the goverenment of the United States.
I don't care if you don't post this. At least you and you're assinine cronies at FIRST READ will see it.
You people make me sick to my stomach. Why don't you move to Cuba, and write for Castro's state newspaper.
The way you are covering this election is tantamount to doing the same thing for Obama.
When he tugs on his ear, its a  signal to Hillary saying "watch the suckers buy this whopper".
Liars. Toss em PA!
CLINTON: “Thank you. I hope everybody will go out to vote tomorrow. Buh-bye… I don’t think I can take any sh#& from anybody on that, do you?”

Bill has given more sh#& then any president I hav ever heard of.

Bad enough he is a sexual predator....
he is also a racist at heart.....

Hillary Clinton
A Liar for all seasons.....
Republican Forever:

You know what it takes for us to believe you? Stop insulting us and being what I like to call "conservative elites," or conservatives who believe any and every idea promulgated by conservatives is right. Look, the Clintons are by no means "liberals" or "progressives," and the very thought of them as such is ridiculous (in many ways, Ron Paul is more progressive than Bill Clinton could ever have hoped to be).
Who cares what Bill says, just look what the man has done in his career. Then look at Obama, who has done NOTHING! Obama says he's going to do this, and fix that. Since coming to Washington, he's done nothing. In Illinois, he's done the same, with more 'Present' votes then you can count. Obama talks a good game, but hasn't done one thing of any value in his political life. Hillary gets things done, sometimes it isn't pretty, but it happens.
Hey, The Public At Large - How about those Clinton pardons?
"And I have 1.4 million people around the world"

Pretty sure he's lying his ass off again. He's taking credit for the AIDS relief from Bush and the American taxpayer. His little outfit last i heard was only getting drugs to about 150,000 at best. One of his cronies made the same claim on one of the Sundays show last week.
haha Bill said a bad word! Awesome.
But no, seriously, why can't he just let time wash his misstatements away? Why does he have to keep twisting the knife? What Bill said was wrong in SC.. It is still wrong today! You messed up Bill. Just apologize.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
Doesn't seem like that big of deal compared to some of the language John McCrazy has used.
Is that any new?  Everybody knows that it taking out of context just for political move.  Like I said before, all Obama supporters including Obama, every time they have an opportunity to twist and use someone statement into the race issue they do, because they want to make the Clinton look bad, and nasty.

That is why I don’t trust Obama, he is very good using his nice speeches to convince people of things that are not true.

But the most, as a Latino, I feel it is disgusting what the African American community has done, they betrayed their love for Clinton and trying to diminish Clinton just because they want to support a black candidate.  Before Clinton was his friend, his president, now they talk about Clinton as he is his enemy.  That is betray, that is what Judas did like NM government, Richardson.
Talking in circles. Bill you wanted a 2nd term. You wanted to keep your base of support, therein explains all of the blacks/hispanics in your cabinet, and Maya Angelou reciting at your inauguration. So save it Bill. You did after all threaten Ron Brown, while calling him a 'boy'.

Obama '08
Who was he trying to appeal to on this show ...AA?  Forget it , that ship has sailed.

Chuck and crew I notice that you continually harp on what % of the "white' vote Obama gets.  Least you forget Hillary will never win the GE without the AA vote but I don't see you highlighting the % of that vote that she gets with the same fevor.  Do you just assume we will vote for her regardless.  I think we answeed that question in SC.  That's a big issue the democratic party SHOULD be equally as worried about
Steve B. NewYork
let me tell you did, the one who injected the race issue in the campaign first, was the media, specially C Mathews in November.

get you fact str8 dude.  the media is the one who introduced and made this campaign about gender and race starting in November in Hardball.  and the AA community with Obama continue using it.

and dont talk about racism, because the first racism people are AA who are supporting 95 to 97 % Obama just because he is black.  only because that dude...  and that is sick
How can anyone in their right mind still say the media has given Obama a free ride. Nothing has been made of any of the clinton debacles in the past three weeks. If anything Obama gave Clinton the real free pass during the debate when he defended her Bosnia lies. But her nasty self stayed on the low road throughout.
I'm an independent voter who is liberal on some issues and conservative on others.  Also for what it's worth, I have met Bill Clinton on several occassions and I'm also African-American. I'm amazed when I see people say this guy did a lot for African-Americans.  Really?  Like what?  I know he did a lot for a few African-Americans in his cabinet and social circle, but what else did he do for the masses?
When genocide broke out in Rwanda he sat by and watched. However, when genocide or some form of it broke out in Bosnia, he was all for ending it with American intervention.  My point: Africa and African-Americans mean nothing to him unless they serve his interests.

Finally, did anyone ask him what Jesse Jackson has to do with Barack Obama?  If his comments weren't related to race, then what was his point?  Bill and so many other people forget that Barack Obama is half white.  According to Bill's logic, is that why he won Iowa, Kansas or Wisconsin?  When you try to make a correlation b/w two people who have nothing in common other than being a person of color and residing in Chicago combined with a comment/insinuation about African-American voters in SC, how is it that Obama's campaign played the race card against him? This interview in Philly epitomizes the term "Intellectual Dishonesty".
"Who cares what Bill says, just look what the man has done in his career. Hillary gets things done, sometimes it isn't pretty, but it happens."  You know who you are that wrote this.  This sounds as wacky as Hillary and Bill look.  You have got to be kidding me.  It's sad to see people can't call it like it is.  The woman is in debt, they are constantly lying, and that gives you a warm fuzzy.  Foolish....
Steve, you said it perfectly,

"LISTEN CAREFULLY : WE don't think that you are a racist. We believe that you made a calculated decision to inject race into the campaign in order to undermine Obama's candidacy .. AND IT BACKFIRED ON YOU ! "

That's it, plain and simple.  Man, what happened to the Bill we knew and loved?  Maybe his true colors are finally being revealed.
Republican Forever - You are absolutely wrong.  I didn't trust Clinton back in 1992 when he ran because I thought he was a sleazeball, and I was right; however, he convinced me during the course of his time in office that being a good person and a good President aren't always the exact same thing.  But remember, Clinton ultimately succeeded towards the end of his tenure because the Republicans were EVEN BIGGER sleazeballs than him, and the public knew it; that's why Obama is inspiring so many people, because he's offering us true authenticity instead of a choice between the lesser of two liars.  Nice job totally missing the point, though.
Brendan D, Niles, IL

No insult intended, but liberals do seem to be easily led around by the nose. Take this Obama so called "movement" as an example. It appears that Democrats will latch on to something, anything, without really examining what that thing is. As time has gone by during the primaries, Obama has shown that he has the earmarks of being the next Jimmy Carter, or worse. It's not up to me to tell you what to think, you need to do that yourself. Now is a good time to start.
Boo Whoo...What a Whiner.....
"No. I think that they played the race card on me. And we now know, from memos from the campaign and everything that they planned to do it along. IYou gotta go something to play the race card on me -- my office is in Harlem."

Yes, Bill. Some of my best friends have offices in Harlem.  What kind of 1960s politically-correct "sh#&" is that? Where you have your office has nothing to do with Hillary's proposal on health care -- requiring the poor(read "racially-challenged")pay premiums whether they have the money or not.

We know, you're paying Hil's back for Monica, et al,  with The Oval.  But, you're doing such a poor job, patting her on and stabbing her in the back at the  same time.  A little cognitive dissonance, per chance?
Bill spoke the truth.

For many, facts are quite valuable.  For those that cling to illusions, they are threatening.
Republican Forever:

I have to laugh when YOUR party leader is spending BILLIONS of dollars a month in Iraq and you call US "liberals"! What a crock. And now you've got a man old enough to have known Jesus running for President! He should really be in touch with the new young voters that Barack brought in, don't you think? You, my friend, can stay in the 1950's with the rest of your party.....us "liberals" will chose a new path and a new leader in Senator Obama!
Bill is losing his skills. We're all on to you Bill Clinton. We all know exactly what you were doing when you compared Barack's campaign to Jesse's. After Hillary drops out of this race, take a long vacation.
Jesse Jackson, Jr. played the race card, not Bill Clinton.  But MSNBC never reports that part.
I am so sick of David Axelrod and his cronies trying to tarnish President Clinton's legacy.  He is playing the part of Gingrich in the 90s.  Talk about tearing apart the party.
Colleen, you said it perfectly! He's losing it. How pathetic. I can't believe I voted for that man twice. He cannot get back in the WH under any circumstances...
Dear DNC:
Thanks for giving us the choice between a power-hungry socialist who's a pathological liar and a elitest communist who's possibly also a racist.
To Gary, Toronto:

With due respect, I think you are an inflated MORON! Barack didn't do anything. See the clips again ... how can you allow the media to spin things out of its normal way and you believe it to be so? Are you that delusional?
The Clintons are tarnashing their own legacies and it's a truly sad event to witness.
He is telling the truth.  When a person says a truth about 1988 even though he is a black candidate, that is not racist.  Everybody is hyper sensitive right now.

Ferraro's comments were prejudice and racist, but it occurred to Jackson in 1988 as well.  So, the old hag has done it before.  Everybody just needs to chill.

Rev. Wright and his racist rants are a hot mess.  Obama tries to justify those as forming a more "perfect union" with G** D*** America.  Give me a break!
Bill, unfortunately, is clearly losing it.  But it's Republican Forever who made my day.  Let me get this straight- the Republican party has been led to destruction by a vapid, childish frat boy, who likes to play dress up in cowboy costumes...and Democrats are the ones who are led by the nose.  Thank you for that :)
Republican forever you have it wrong.  Rebublicans are the ones led around by the nose by idiots.  Thats why we have had eight years of the worst president in the history of america. As far as the clintons they need to stop whining its not Obamas fault if bill and hillary keep and their entorage keep putting their foots in their mouth.
Tyree, no one needs to "tarnish" Bill's "Legacy". He shot himself in the foot with his last minute presidential pardons.

You have every right to believe in someones good, but it shouldn't be "blind trust". Do yourself a favor and read this list of pardons (from the Department of Justice) that Clinton made, and then ask yourself "Will this be used against the Clinton's if they are the nominee?".

http://www.usdoj.gov/pardon/clintonpardon_grants.htm

Presidents
I truly believe that LIES are more a part of the Clinton makeup than blood. They just cannot get through a day without a few more outrageous lies. The Clintons played the erace card quite poorly, and it backfired....and always will. Drip-drip-drip....if she does not win by 15% in PA, and actually gain many delegates, the drips keep coming.
Its not Axelrod, Tyree.  Axelrod, by all accounts, has been a gentleman.  If you want to look to who is tarnishing Bill's legacy, you have to look to Bill himself.  Everytime he opens his big mouth.
