Clinton: Bill said what...?

Posted: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 9:12 AM by Mark Murray

Some legacy fixing? Per NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli, Bill Clinton appeared on WHYY radio (an NPR affiliate), in which he defended comparing Obama to Jesse Jackson right before the South Carolina contest (“No, I think they played the race card on me”), and in which he misstates some of the facts surrounding his comment. Also, at the end of the interview, Bill doesn’t appear to know he’s still on the air when he hurls an expletive at an aide. *** CLARIFICATION *** The way this was written implied that Clinton berated an aide; he didn't. We should have written that Clinton "uttered an expletive to an aide."

Here’s the transcript: INTERVIEWER (RE: Jackson comment): “Do you think that was a mistake, and would you do that again?"

CLINTON: "No. I think that they played the race card on me. And we now know, from memos from the campaign and everything that they planned to do it along. Jesse Jackson -- I said, if you go back to what I said … First of all, there was a conversation that I engaged in that included two African America members of Congress, who were standing right there, who were having the conversation with me. And I said that Jesse Jackson had won a good campaign with overwhelming African American support and white supporters. And this was started off because people didn’t wanna -- they wanted to act like, for reasons I didn’t understand, that Senator Obama didn’t have this African American support, or they thought his white support was better because Jesse Jackson had blue-collar working people, and most of Senator Obama’s support were upscale, cultural liberals. So it was like beneath them to be compared to Jesse Jackson.

"I respect Jesse Jackson. He’s a friend of mine, even though he endorsed Senator Obama. One of his sons and his wife endorsed Hillary. Their whole family’s divided. But his campaign in 1988 was a seminal campaign in American history. It was the first campaign to ever to openly involve gays. Hillary’s chief delegate counter, Harold Ickes, worked his heart out for Jesse Jackson. I frankly thought the way Obama campaign reacted was disrespectful to Jesse Jackson. And I called him and asked him if he found anything offensive, and he just laughed and he said, ‘Of course I don’t. We all know what’s going on.’”

"I mean this is just, you know… You gotta go something to play the race card on me -- my office is in Harlem. And Harlem voted for Hillary, by the way. And I have 1.4 million people around the world, mostly people of color in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and elsewhere, on the world’s least expensive AIDS drugs. I appointed more African American, Hispanic and women judges and U.S. Attorneys than all previous presidents put together and had nine African American Cabinet members.

"I was stating a fact. And it is still a fact. You know, I was amazed that we got almost 20% of the African American vote in South Carolina, and I think it was because we had so many local officials who believed in Hillary and stuck their necks out for her, some of which were threatened with their jobs. But I can see that this used against me, but this was a conversation that occurred early in the morning. We didn’t even know what the vote was gonna be at the time. We were all sitting around drinking coffee. We’d just been to breakfast. We were talking about South Carolina political history. And this was used out of context and twisted for political purposes by the Obama campaign to try to breed resentment elsewhere.

"And, you know, do I regret saying it? No. Do I regret that it was used that way? I certainly do. But you really gotta go something to try to portray me as a racist."

INTERVIER: “OK. Well thank you very much, Mr. President.”

CLINTON: “Thank you. I hope everybody will go out to vote tomorrow. Buh-bye… I don’t think I can take any sh#& from anybody on that, do you?”

The New York Daily News, looking at Clinton’s money troubles, calls the race, “Barack vs. Ba-roke.”

MSNOBAMA is at it again. Geez, why don't you just make it official and become part of Sen. Obama's campaign? I mean, you've been doing nothing but cheering him on since this campaign first started. The only thing Keith Olberman and Chris Matthews need is matching Obama tattoos in their butt cheeks. I mean, they already open these wide for Sen. Obama every week night. Just make it official already and stop pretending to be an actual news network. Your coverage of this campaign has been about as biased as that seen on Fox every night and yet Keith has the audacity to criticize Fox news for its slanted coverage? Look closer to home Keith, like in the mirror.

Your right Republican Forever...I have had to do the "I was wrong about the Clinton's Apology Tour" with all my Republican friends...But just like there are people who cannot see that Bush is a Putz there are STILL people who cannot see that the Clintons are very bad for our country.

Bill Clinton thinks that Hillary will be able to win the general without the African American vote?  She already has a ceiling of 49% and AA's account for 10% of it so this is what will happen Hillary 40% McBush 60%....Thanks Clintons for ruining our party and country AGAIN!!!!
Tyree Byers: Bill Clinton tarnished his own legacy: impeached and disbarred; lying womanizer. The internet gives a wealth of info about his Arkansas Governor days~little misdeeds (apart from womanizing) with favortism to people who funded his campaign.
i am sorry, pres. clinton , but being a white woman age 57, from SOUTH CAROLINA,  that totally supported you come heck or high water while you were in office, and defended your every move.. i took your commments as an insult to all of SC. It was as if SC didn't even count in your opinion. No biggy to ya'll if you lost it. Yes, it was an insult..but not just to the blacks. I was astounded at how little you thought of our state's vote.
OMG!  Must he continue insulting our intelligence?  What a pathological liar!  What a narcissist!

Any sentient being knew exactly what he was insinuating, and he himself knew what he was doing. After all, isn't he supposed to be the "best political mind" out there?

It was not the Obama campaign that "created" the Clintons' demeaning comments and tactics—the Obama camp only documented the long list of ridiculous, divisive comments, some of which engaged in race-baiting.  The public perceived these tactics on its own, and the press did, too. Ask Donna Brazile.  Ask Ted Kennedy, who called Bill Clinton several times and had "heated" exchanges about his behavior.  (This was before Kennedy endorsed Obama.)  Ask the voters.

It is SO obvious that Clinton cares about his legacy and his brand first and foremost, even above helping his wife's candidacy.  All the better to stroke his ego and keep the million$$ coming in.

Go away, the both of you.  You are embarrassing yourselves...and our country.
Bubba unhinged...again.
CJ,

Great post!!  Well thought out and well written.  I am not African American however I am an Independent.

Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful post
Again bill distorts the truth. He is not in Harlem because of his love of African Americans. He originally tried to lease 8000 sq. feet in midtown at
Carnegie Towers for more than $ 800,000 per year, more than all other ex presidents combined, but there was such a public uproar that the GSA wisely refused to spend tax payer dollars on bill's penthouse digs.In order that this fiasco didn't hurt hill's senate chances, he choose Harlem to deflect public opinion. Just one more example of the clinton's using African Americans as props to further their ends.
Bill, you can't pose as black and then make your wife's entire campaign based on denouncing the black reverend who shook your hand after the Monica Lewinsky scandal and prayed for forgiveness for you. Your supporters try to associate Obama with Farrakhan, but you supported the Million Man March and Governor Rendell praised Louis Farrakhan at a dinner. Obama is vetting you and your wife.
