Bill: 'I'm not going to play your games'

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli and NBC's Mark Murray
At the Jewish Community Center in Pittsburgh this morning, Bill Clinton took questions from local press after shaking a lot of hands. NBC/NJ asked him about the WHYY radio interview in which he said the Obama camp was playing the race card.

Below is full transcript of the back-and-forth:

NBC/NJ: “Sir, what did you mean yesterday when you said that the Obama campaign was playing the race card on you?”

CLINTON: “When did I say that, and to whom did I say that?”

NBC/NJ: “On WHYY radio yesterday”

CLINTON: “No, no, no. That’s not what I said. You always follow me around and play these little games, and I’m not going to play your games today. This is a day about election day. Go back and see what the question was, and what my answer was. You have mischaracterized it to get another cheap story to divert the American people from the real urgent issues before us, and I choose not to play your game today. Have a nice day.”

NBC/NJ: “Respectfully sir, though, you did say …”

CLINTON: “Have a nice day.” [continues shaking hands with supporters]. I said what I said, you can go and look at the interview. And if you’ll be real honest, you’ll also report what the question was and what the answer was.”

NBC/NJ: “They asked you if you regretted your comparing Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama on the day after the South Carolina primary.”

CLINTON: “And I pointed out that I did not do that, and that I complimented them both. And that Jesse Jackson took no offense. And I called him myself, I said, ‘Did you find that offensive?’ And he said no.

Again, here is what Clinton told WHYY.

INTERVIEWER (RE: Jackson comment): “Do you think that was a mistake, and would you do that again?"

CLINTON: "No. I think that they played the race card on me. And we now know, from memos from the campaign and everything, that they planned to do it along.

Bill should stick with his story. The Obama group HAVE been playing the race card from the beginning and the press has been favoriing Obama and screwing the Clintons as well. In other words, we will have another wussie pants like John Kerry as our nominee. AND he can't win.
Now Bill cant even remember what he is saying out on the campaign trail.... Someone please put this Old man out of his missary..i.e. retirement home and take Hillary with you...
Whoa!  Bill Clinton has totally lost it.  Makes me a little nervous that he could be back in the White House, even as "first husband" or whatever one calls it.  He's really gone loopy.
This guy really lives in lala land.....

Even I know what he said and so do millions of other Americans....

Bill trying to pass Robert Byrd as the spokesman for the KKK?

I went back and looked at the interview Bill.....
ast your people didnot get in there to change things around.....
Deny, obfuscate, change subject - classic Bill.

I never (filling the blank).
Depends on your definition of is.
I am starting wonder if he has some sort of pathological condition that precludes him from telling the truth or knowing when he is lying.

I'd say that it is a sad fall from greatness for a former President...but the reality is that he has always played fast and loose with the truth...
Bill Clinton is a couple sandwiches shy of a picnic

Bill Clinton is a couple of fries shy of a Happy Meal

Bill Clinton is a couple of cans shy of a six-pack
Can't wait to see the responses from the Clinton supporters.  We all know that the Clintons cannot be blamed for their never ending lies.  It's all the big bad media for daring to report those lies!

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Just ask their creditors.
Can he not stop lying?

NBC/NJ: “Sir, what did you mean yesterday when you said that the Obama campaign was playing the race card on you?”
CLINTON: “No, no, no. That’s not what I said.
...
CLINTON: "No. I think that they played the race card on me."

NBC/NJ: “They asked you if you regretted your comparing Jesse Jackson to Barack Obama on the day after the South Carolina primary.”

CLINTON: “And I pointed out that I did not do that"

Uhm, but you did!  Whether it was racist or not wasn't the question.  But you DID compare them, for good or bad.  You did!
Wow.  Bill Clinton blatantly lying again.  Who would have thought.
OBAMA IS A DIRTY POLITICIAN FROM THE START: Chicago Sun-Times—A close examination of Obama’s first campaign clouds the image he has cultivated throughout his political career: Obama, who runs on a message of giving a voice to the voiceless, first entered public office not by leveling the playing field, but by clearing it. Alice Palmer, friend and mentor to Obama, served the district in the Illinois Senate for much of the 1990s. Decades earlier, she was a community organizer in the area when Obama was growing up in Hawaii. She risked her safe seat to run for Congress and touted Obama as a suitable successor. But when Palmer lost the congressional race, her supporters asked Obama to fold his campaign so she could easily retain her state Senate seat. Obama not only refused to step aside for the woman who was his friend and had recommended him for the seat, he filed challenges that nullified Palmer’s hastily gathered nominating petitions, forcing her to withdraw. Had Palmer survived the petition challenge, Obama would have faced the daunting task of taking on an incumbent senator. “He wondered if we should knock everybody off the ballot. How would that look?” said Ronald Davis, the paid Obama campaign consultant. Davis filed objections to all four of Obama’s Democratic rivals at the candidate’s behest. All other candidates were disposed of by Obama’s challenges. He then went on to win the election.

Does Bill not understand that people record stuff and write things down?  What a moron.
Hillary and Bill are two peas in a pod. They are both dragging their legacies in the mud. What a shame.
CLINTON: “Have a nice day.” [continues shaking hands with supporters]. I said what I said, you can go and look at the interview. And if you’ll be real honest, you’ll also report what the question was and what the answer was.”
----------------------------------------------------
Bill, I think it's safe to assume he did before asking you about it.
i NEVER said that...because i DID say that...

HUH?!
The time has come for the PA voters to make a very important decision for the rest of the country - whether to vote for competence, experience and solutions or not. Do we need a "rockstar" politician or a politician who knows how to get things done? I hope the voters will look carefully at the two and ask yourself who is best qualified to get America back on track.  If you really do the research, the answer will be clear.  It's Hillary Clinton.
HAHA MELTDOWN!
Busted!
Poor Old Bill
So many lies he can't keep track of them.
Ummmmmmmm Bill - You just contradicted yourself -- again.   Is it possible for this man to tell truth?

Between this man and his wife threatening to obliterate Iran (if it attacks Israel) after she chastised Sen Obama for making policy statements based on hypotheticals, not to mention accusing him of being "naive" - just what does that make you Hillary?  Either you are the biggest panderer of all time (which I believe) or the biggest lier (next to your husband)  -- which I definitely believe!

Either way -- the both of you scare the Hell out of me -- and a lot of other people.

Samantha Power was right --
Bill lied against  Monica Liwinsky. He just lied again. The Clintons are corrupt and dishonest. Once a liar, always a liar.
LAST FRIDAY, AS A CLINTON CONTRIBUTOR, I WAS RECEIVED AN EMAIL FRON GEOFF GARIN THE NE CLINTON CHIEF STRATEGIST INVITING ME TO WRIET HIM DIRECTLY WITH MY COMMENTS. THIS IS A COPY OF MY ACTUAL RESPONSE:

Dear Geoff:

Thanks for the invitation to write to you with my thoughts and/or advice. Here is what I now think:

Drop out. That would be my advice. Your team put up a good fight but it's over. You're actually making a lot of us very tired.

Have your candidate make her speech on Tuesday evening thanking the wonderful people of PA  - and the entire country - and then have her throw her support to Senator Obama for unity's, the Party's and America's sake. She could go out as a winner on a high note.

This would instantly restore her greatly diminished credibility and get back the support she has lost within the party and the Senate. Once this is all over - and Obama is the nominee - she will not be greatly comforted by the remaining support of white women over 55 (I'm 57), and working class "Reagan/McCain Dems. She will have lost the base, the party elite and her peers in the Senate if she keeps pushing this.

Once she endorses Obama she can then become a true leader in the Senate and help President Obama to shape and pass legislation. Eventually she can replace Harry Reid. Would this not be good for you and Howard going forward as well?

Otherwise, she will walk away from this, still the loser, but with culpability (deserved or not) for damaging what had been shaping up as a transcendent Democratic year. I cannot imagine why she does not wish to be a positive part of this opportunity, nor can I imagine that she - and you - do not now see that she is not the one to bring this agenda home.

It's too late for her to become the nominee in any real world scenario other than one which would be so bitterly divisive that's the thought alone is horrific. Pick the right time and make a rousing endorsement speech on Tuesday for Senator Obama. Those negatives will get cut in half, Bill's legacy will be restored and her (and your) successful future will be assured.

I hope you've taken this advice in the spirit in which it was intended...as an honest and caring response to your invitation.

Gary
now THAT is HEEElarious! from hist first line, denying he said "they played the race card on me"...to his 5th line, when he SAYS "they played the race card on me".....jeez bill...you're unraveling right before our eyes..
"All politicians lie, but the Clintons lie with such ease, it's disturbing." -- David Geffen

Truer words have never been spoken.  It's actually clinically pathological.
Re: Pam @ 12:02 p.m.

If you've only got an article that demonstrates that Barack Obama knows his way around politics to defend the fact that Bill Clinton is a pathological liar...the Clinton's are sunk.

You and your ilk are pathetic.
Bill Clinton has often been praised as the greatest politician of the past 20 years.  Might it be possible that he's always been exactly the same as he is today?  Might it be possible that the speed with which news travels and the permanency with which statements live on is MUCH different now than when he was first running for President?  Might it be that rather than being the greatest politician, he used to be able to get away with saying 3 different things in a day?
Hey First Read, report this:

Obama gained more support today (not superdelegate, but still... check CNN's ticker) from Julie Nixon Eisenhower. She donated the max to Obama's campaign.
Without discussing any racial cards that may or may not have been played at any point during the campaign, the discussion should immediately go to the lies, equivocations, misstatements, and condescending spin that continue to come from the Clinton campaign.

Unfortunately, a substantial amount of it comes from the former president himself. After all the dust settles, people will say that Bill Clinton was one of the main reasons that HRC did not receive the Democratic nomination.

It's actually kind of sad. She is an amazing, accomplished woman, and I believe that she would make a great president. However, her husband and surrogates are so self-centered that they go off message and do whatever they want. She can't push her agenda for constantly cleaning up behind her surrogates.

At this point, it's a numbers game. Obama is going to be the nominee. I do think HRC will be a great Senate majority leader, and I still think that in an election cycle or 2, she will be able to staff her campaign with better people to manage her money and her image without looking like wreckless sleazeballs.

"They lie with such ease it's frightening."- David Geffen former FOB and now an Obama supporter.
The operative word is they. Both of them lie not just Bill.
A vote for Hillary does not mean a vote for Bill. A vote for Hillary DOES mean that Bill and his shenanigans are back in the White House. Everybody who's okay with that in light of how just plain-out dumb he's been during the primary season, raise your hands. He's morphed from a beloved ex-president and hero of the Democratic Party to just another angry white male -- the same kind that brought Newt Gingrich and his hordes to power in 1994. Good job, Billy.
Wow, the Clinton's knack for revisionist history is nothing short of breathtaking! Not even 24 hours go by, and Bill is denying what he said.

He should have learned from his wife's Bosnian sniper fire lies; there's this new fangled technology that actually records your words and actions, so denial is not an option. Of course in the Clintonian world, fact and fiction are so blurred that I don't think they have any basis in reality. And to use the excuse that they are 60+ years old and forgetful as a result is an insult to all of the sharp 60+ year olds who don't have a problem with honesty and integrity.

Hasn't this country had enough lies, distortions and revisionist history during the past 8 years? With HRC's latest 'Umbrella of Deterrent' approach to foreign policy, I shudder to think what will happen to this country and our troops if she were to gain access to the Oval Office. America, WAKE UP before it's too late!
I wonder if he believes his own spin, like Hill believed her Bosnia story...I think the Clintons tell these stories to themselves so many times that they end up believing their own lies....

Oh what a tangled web we weave....
Who is going to protect the American people from the Clintons? These two people have no honor, integrity or character to begin with. Is Bill now losing his mind or just being devious? It is hard to tell because they lie and spin things so much that they always distort the truth.
I am honestly upset with myself for all the goods things I have ever said about the former President.  Even when he was going thru his impeachment, I completely defended him to all my Republican friends.  I feel betrayed.  This former President has made a mockery of the election system, and proven he is nothing more than a bigoted southern "White" male.  If it weren't for Bill, I would have voted for Hillary.

Also, all you racist pigs will have your day, Karma is a Bitch!!!
The Hillbillys way-Lie,lie,spin, spin, distort, lie, spin, spin, whine, whine, lie, lie, destort, memory loss, spin, lie, lie, lie ,blame, blame,Enough, take your ball and go home" Game over"
Bubba Clinton ... you did not litsen to me (refer to previous posting on same topic today).

We still love you ... just don't under-estimate the power of the people.
Dude, Bill... when you're in a hole, you STOP DIGGING.
President Bill Clinton's statement directly contradicted by his own words from yesterday.  Do you think perhaps he is having memory problems?  I hate to think he has lost all touch with reality.

As for "memos" from Senator Obama's campaign, this is nonsense.  I just watched Senator Clinton implicitly blame sexism again for her failure to beat Senator Obama -- first, if this is true, how does she think she could win in the fall when the majority of voters will be men, when she had difficulty in the Democratic primary, the majority of voters are women? second, I wish she would stop claiming this since I believe it hurts the chances of the next woman who runs for President.

Senator Clinton's campaign cannot be solely about she is the first woman running for President or the next woman candidate may be burdened with all of the baggage created by Senator Clinton in this campaign.

As for Senator Obama playing the "race" card, this seems so absurd.  The majority of Democratic voters are woman and white.  Playing the "sexism" card makes sense in the short-term (though I wish she would stop it); playing the "race" card would be stupid.  Senator Obama has proven he campaigns effectively not stupidly.

Senator Obama is running a campaign based on his vision for the future of this Country -- this is about us and our ability to believe we can work to make our own Country better.  Senator Clinton's problem is that she has never articulated any vision; she has borrowed liberally from all of the candidates, but she has no singular vision for where she would take this Country, how she would get 10 point plans turned into law, or why 78% of the superdelegates should ignore the will of the voters and hand her the nomination.
Boy oh boy. This is just too funny. I'd probably be upset over Bill's lies coming back on him, and his triple dipped chocolate covered lies he tells hoping they'll go away, but I've already voted today, and have a real sense of calm. Bill is nothing more than comic relief, while we wait for polling results.

Obama '08
Keeping his dating life discrete seems to be taxing Bill's memory with regard to all other facts.

It'll be a releif when Bill's back in the White House with Hillary too occupied to mind Bill's antics and he can start having some real fun again.

Bush / Clinton / Bush / Clinton..... Are you dizzy yet?
Bill Clinton may not be familiar with the technological era with recorders a nd you tube. In the 90s, he  may have gotten away with not recalling or denying information. Currently, everything is recordered and taped. This is uploaded on the internet. People can refer back to it. The transcript states that Bill accused Obama of playing the race card. Denying it is useless at this point with the transcript providing the evidence.
Bill keeps forgetting that this is the internet age - anything you say can and will be used against you.  This analysis is giving him the benefit of the doubt; it would be sad to think that he's really losing it...
What a big fat maroon....
I never thought I would say this about Bill Clinton.  What a jerk!
Given the makeup of Pennsylvania - an older population with a significant blue-collar constituency and a sizable proportion of Roman Catholics - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton should win the popular vote.

What is the meaning of a win for Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania?

I don't think being a liar and the wife of a politician really qualifies you as the best candidate for the office of President. Despite her effective spin campaign, she has much less experience than Obama. And to the point that started this thread, how can you tell a Clinton is lying? His/Her lips are moving. We deserve better than that.
I wonder if it's a question of lying or whether he is in total denial.  It really sounds like he had no idea he said what he said.  This guy needs help...seriously.  He's too young for senility but the behavior he's been exhibiting the past couple of  months has been very peculiar.
THE POINT IS THAT BILL CLINTON SHOULD HAVE NEVER MENTIONED JESSE JACKSON! NO ONE ELSE DID, BUT BILL CLINTON!

JESSE JACKSON HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS ELECTION AND NOW HE WANTS TO BLAME OBAMA!

NOW HE SAYS HE DIDN'T SAY IT!
POLITICO HAS THE AUDIO!

WHY NOW, A DAY BEFORE THE PA PRIMARY, WOULD HE BRING IT BACK UP INTO THE NEWS!

BILL CLINTON BROUGHT IT UP, NOT THE MEDIA!

I'm sure I'll go back to liking Bill Clinton after this primary is over, but he's like a former great baseball player that's lost his stuff and keeps striking out.

And there are some that are trying to have it both ways in there criticism of Obama.  They say he's coming out on top against the Clintons because he's supposedly playing dirty tricks (like the race card against Bill), and yet they say in the same comment he's not tough enough to win in the general.

How does this work exactly?  He is tough and conniving enough to win the media and public perception game against Bill Clinton and then somehow won't be able to handle McCain.  C'mon, you Clinton propaganda hounds should have better dellusions than that.
