An Obama improvement since Ohio?

Posted: Tuesday, April 22, 2008 9:20 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
NBC News has projected Clinton to win Pennsylvania, but if Obama keeps it closer than the margin in Ohio, there are some signs in the exit polling that would show why.

Obama fared better in the largest voting bloc by age, the 50-64 group. In Ohio, that group made up 32% of the electorate, and Clinton won it 60%-37%. This time, the group made up 36% of the electorate, and Clinton won it by a slighter margin, 56%-44%.

The electorate in Pennsylvania is older (second oldest in the country behind Florida). The +65 category was 23% of the vote vs. just 14% in Ohio. But Obama did better with this group in Pennsylvania (63%-37% for Clinton) than in Ohio (72%-26% for Clinton).

Education was another factor. Among those without a college degree, Clinton won 58%-42%, similar to her victory in Ohio, 58%-40%, but more voters in Pennsylvania reported having a college degree (47% vs. 32% in Ohio). And Obama won those voters 51%-49%, a similar margin to Ohio (51%-47%).

Obama also scraped around the margins with every racial demographic, but not enough to pull off the victory. Clinton won white women 66%-34% (47% of the electorate); she won that group 67%-31% in Ohio (44% of the electorate). With the overall white vote, Clinton won it 64%-34% in Ohio and 62%-38% in Pennsylvania. Among white men, Clinton won 58%-39% in Ohio and 56%-44% in Pennsylvania.

Among black voters (13% of the electorate; was 18% in Ohio), Obama won by similar margins in Pennsylvania (89%-11%) as in Ohio (87%-13%).

*** UPDATE *** With the recalibrated exit polls, we've updated the numbers above.

Another point, As Marc Ambinder points out, Clinton improved her margins with Catholics, which contributed to her victory. In Ohio, where Catholics were 23% of all voters, she got 63%-36%. In Pennsylvania, where they comprised 37% of the vote, she got a higher percentage, 69%-31%.

The biggest hurdle Obama will have to overcome is not Hillary Clinton, not his experience or inexperience, it's not some perceived inability to connect with the "blue collar worker", and it's not his relationship with his Pastor....the hurdle that he will have to overcome, but of course will not be able to, is his color.  Why do we try to ignore the numbers?  Numbers that clearly show this country has not come as far, in regards to race, as we would like to pretend?
i think  he will  be  good  man
We don't have televisions journalists in America anymore, apart from Amy Goodman and Bill Moyers. What we have are used car salesmen.

Obama is running his campaign with integrity. I am proud of him as a human being. If this election is not stolen, he will make a GREAT president. Pray for America.
After the Hillary Hatchet week I cannot understand how anyone would vote for her. There is so much that Obama's supporters could say - don't you think? She is spreading so much poison that her supporters are brain-washed and say they may not vote for Obama. What is going on here? Think about future policies and judges. I am ready to give another donation to Obama. His donations spent in PA gave him a chance against her machine. I am sick of her claiming that if she wins in Ohio and PA then she is the only one who can win in Nov in thohse states. Taht is foolish and short-sighted. The media has almost forgot her lies about sniper fire in Bosnia. she was expected to go to central PA and tell her "I am one of you" story and win by 20 but that is not happening. Let's see how many delegates she got and how many he got.
Sorry from Pennsylvania... Spent a whole day (plus last couple of weeks) campaigning... thought I was prepared for a loss... but it still stinks... not too much longer till Obama has it tied up... hang in there... :-)  I'm "clingin" to hope...
I think that someone should have the guts to say that there is still a problem in white America, that traditional democratic voters cannot stomach to vote for someone based on skin color. Truth, Obama has raised more money, has expanded the democratic base, cut into her initial 33% lead going into PA, taken all of the negative stuff from Clinton and McCain and still progressed in a majority white state. The real question - will you cut off your nose to spite your face, just because you can't let go of bigotry?

The right person for the job is Obama - a fresh and untainted face in the highest office of the land. One that combines the best that a re-newed America will have to offer its people and its allies.
it sucks that obama didn't win, but i am glad to see the margin knocked down so much.
i am from PA and it really bugs me to see so many nasty comments in the news... showing that the negative attack ads have worked.
it really makes PA voters look stupid.
Listen, Obama supporter,
Let's not vote for Hillary, if she ever get the nomination, although it's impossible.  We can't ruin this country again by the clintons.  Bill started this mess by signing NAFTA, Billary's as bad as the Bushs.  It's better not to vote or vote for McCain.  He's at least less corrupted and we can expect less drama thant the scandlists, Billary.
Pennsylvania voters have sent a powerful message, on behalf of us all.   In spite of the conclusions drawn prematurely over the past few weeks, voters continue to have their say.  We knew that would be the case.   I just don't understand the response of the media.  Respectfully, media, this is not all about you.   Who cares that one camp was nicer to you than another?  This is about the American people and our future.   Give the voters their say.   And--sorry, Howard Dean--this is not about the democratic party, either.  The party is just a surrogate for the people,  Let the people continue to speak.
Hey TC ....Obama will win in November, even without the dysfunctional vote of Florida.
To any super-delegates who might be reading this:  I've been a Democratic activist, supporter, and VOTER since 1964.  But I will stay home if Clinton is the nominee.  Please, put this thing to bed and all of us out of our misery by supporting Obama so the Democrats can get on with the real work.
Lets keep the facts straight:
1. Hillary is broke
2. FL and MI dont count so why are they being thrown around by Hillary supporters as though they did? Had all candidates had ooportunity to campaign a revote would have taken place.
3. Why hasnt anyone talked about Ed Rendell's involvement with Farakahn?
4. Why is only an 8 to 10 pt victory significant in Hillary's own home state where she was projected at one time as a 20 pt favorite? Had Barack won by such a slight lead in IL, would this be the same situation?
5. After tonight Hillary will still be 150 delegates behind.
6. Clinton will still be behind in popular vote- something that MSNBC needs to talk more about. I am willing to bet that she can not overcome the popular vote lead of Barack Obama unless she wins the remaing contest by 10 pts or more.
7. Why oh why hasnt anyone commented about Hillary's IRAN comments? Has the media now changed and shifted so much that they are afraid to criticize Hillary about these comments?
8. I am NOT going to vote for Hillary in the general election if she wins- I'd rather vote for McCain.
He was behind by what 22 points a couple weeks ago - pretty good improvement if things hold as-is.  I think the more time people get to know Obama, the more they like him.  So the 6 month campaign for the general will only help him.
Hillary wont win the GE either because she and McCain would have to split the white vote, and without the AA and youth vote she can't win.
HEY HILLARY ...THE VOTING MACHINES CHOSE NOT YOUR SUPPORTERS....GET RID OF THE PREPROGRAMMED VOTING MACHINES   BRING BACK PAPER BALLOTS.... DAY ONE HELL... OUR RIGHT TO VOTE AND HAVE IT BE COUNTED FAIRLY HAS JUST BEEN DAMAGED AGAIN
There is no way that Mr. Obama will win in November. Period.  I'm so tired of the way every news story is minimized, no matter how well she does, you will not give her that credit.  You bias is unbelievable.  BTW - Chris Matthews is has lost a lot of credibilty by commentating in the biased way that he has done thorughout this campaign.  He is manufacturing gossip and opinion, based on no factual basis so my friends and I can only conclude that he does not now want to be recognized as a journalist.
Can't someone stop Chris Matthews from interrupting every person he talks with.  Let Keith do the talking to other pundits [Howard Fineman, for one].

CM, would you please let these other contrubutors complete at least one thought?
The man told you people the truth and you berated him for it for favor of a candidate who lies to your faces and then turns around and stabs you in the back.
Super delegates decide the nominee and the USA voters KNOW that the candidate was not able to get the popular vote.  A BIG win tonight for the back-room politicans.
Hillary will do whatever it takes to win. People in NC and IN are smart. They will see through all the Clinton's bad politics. This is the end of the Clinton's. When this is over, Bill will have the same negatives has his wife. I am afraid of this women in the White House. David Gregory, Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough should not be on TV. They suck!
Looks like matthews and olberwoman will have to remove tongue from obama backside, try telling the truth and maybe some day you can beat nic at night for the ratings share...poor rachel madcow, how will she spin this huge loss to look like Barry got screwed??He is an empty suit that cries like a little girl when asked questions by nbc moderaters.Ya,he's ready for the white house..think not..he not ready for anything that requires no scripted answers and phony questioners.
Of course the press, Mcshame, and the clintons and crew want this to go on as long as possible.  However, she will never get the nomination because the numbers will never get close enough.  People pay attention closely and learn well about popular votes and delagates.  Be aware!!!  She could never get the nomination because most reasonable and sensible Americans want a dignified, decent, respectful and a person who could bring AMERICANS together.  She is a gutter RAT and they smell awful.  The stench of a gutter RAT will fume up to intollerable stench.  Remember She could never WIN the nomination NEVER!!!  CHANGE IS NECESSARY!!!  OBAMA  ALL the way 08 has got to be FAIR not FEAR.  Intelligence STANDS up firmly.
yes, yes, yes obsolutely he can.  So gracious.  It takes a great person with sophisticated ability to negotiate than a gutter RAT to fight wars. One takes mental and emotional stability the latter does not require any thinking.  Take your pick!!!  Come to Indiana we do not need filt here.  We got his back here
People may say it's not about race but the simple truth is that the older women in Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states are so prejudiced they won't vote for a black man even though he is the only one who can bring this nation together. It's a generational thing I think, they grew up in the era of Jim Crowe and can't evolve. That is why more of her supporters say they won't vote for Obama when she finally loses. Why haven't they asked Hillary where her flag pin is? I just don't understand how she gets away with all her trash talking.
IF Clinton somehow becomes the nominee - all of those young people who are so supportive of Obama will simply drop out and walk away; guaranteed.  We Dems will then lose to McCain.
-------
So true.
- Why do we keep hearing about the white racists.  They seem willing to voting for Obama who is supposed to be black. How come 98% of blacks voted for Obama- that seems like more than a coincidence.
How about Nora O'Donnell?  Incredible how she was spinning the exit polls, at 9 pm no less..the press could spin this right into Hillary's lap, once and for all.
Geez America...could you imagine the sound of this..

"Ladies and Gentlemen, The President of the United States - Barrack Hussein Obama"

Wake up America!!! scary thought...
Clinton has been belittled by the media since her win, since it  want her to fall. it is a male-dominated, misogynistic entity that is so egotistical and self-righteous that it will completely ignore the fact that clinton will have won and maybe even by a huge margin. The right wing has taken over the media and is lying to the American people about Obama's infallible honesty. he will be caught with some scandal, maybe even sexually charged. The media is a disgrace right now.
MSNBC Shame on You!!!!
Do you think you're supporting Obama? DAH... Yeah,
and it's so obvious.
If people want the REAL, UNBIASED news, they should
tune into BBC, we get the real slant on things,
and it's a shame we have to go over the "Pond" to
hear what's REALLY happening in our country.

You GO GIRL (Hillary)... don't let the slant from
MSNBC (and WBZ in Boston) get you down, you're gonna
win in July.

Carol from Mattapoisett, MA
The Republicans have got to love this.
Hillary isn't knocked out, doesn't score a game-changing win and remains behind on delegates and share of popular vote (not counting the two states that broke the rules.)
Obama fails to show he can take big states and continues to make rookie-level mistakes ("Bitter" comment, etc.).
Both campaigns continue to bleed cash from donors, as well as going more and more negative with each passing day.
Hillary's core strategy (having blown the caucuses where the Obama team did better ground-level work) is to engineer a back room deal at the convention, which will thoroughly alienate the young, idealistic voters who are some of Obama's strongest supporters and donors.
Did Karl Rove design this scenario?

Don't let rich whitie the media corporate elite tell you what to do You a'int seen nothing until they get what they want hillary to run against mCain't in the fall do you smell the stinc
Obnoxious David Gregory, but if you are just some of the Obamas fans don't you wanthim to take a swing at the other camp the way the pummeled him the past 6 weeks, are you kidding me. Enough of the fact that i am a woman please don't gang up on me but i have myself , my husband and Ed Randell who are going to punch until you can still not stand, but that will be ok. Enough of this Kumbaya coming from Obama
I've heard so much talk of Obama needing to win the white male vote, white female vote, etc. (media questioning if he has what it takes to win over core dem. voters.) Why no talk of Hillary's big problem with African Amer. voters? This is a huge voting block to ensure a dem. victory and she is losing almost 90% to 10% consistently! I think Obama fared pretty well in Clinton country. I don't think Hillary will win over many new Superdelegates with this win since she went so negative and I'm sure the talk of nuking Iran will hardly convince them to go to her corner (ugh!) She may see a few extra bucks trickle in but not enough to solve her debt issues. I heard the majority  of the Republicans who switched to Dem in PA went for Barack. Republicans for Obama!! Character matters!
It is so obvious from listening to Buchanan and Scarborough that they would rather have McCain against Hillary because they think McCain can beat Hillary. I turned off my TV today because I couldn't take anymore of there comments. If I want that crap, I can tune in Fox.
Obama presents a real change for the country, Clinton brings the same ole thing. I hope this country wakes up from I don't won't them to raise my taxes, or take my guns away, or let's nuke them if they don't agree with us mentality. We are presented with many challenges that will affect generations to come. The time for change is now, or do you want to vote for the secure candidate like most of the country did in 00-04? What did that bring us?
If the situation were reversed, with Clinton having the lead in popular vote, states won and delegates, all the MSM pundits would be telling Obama to get out of the race. There is simply no way Clinton can win without getting pledged delegates to switch their votes, which would destroy the party. Sure, she doesn't care, but some of us do. If Clinton steals this election, I'm voting Nade
What makes me so ill about Hillary is how she keeps citing the Iraq war and vets and their hardship when she helped create it and put them there. Just like she she supported NAFTA and now she pretends to be the solution to working families. She's an opportunistic hack who will say or do anything to get what she wants. Don't be fooled by just another career political machine.

Shouldn't the question be why didn't Clinton blow him out in Pennsylvania? This is a state custom made for Hillary, she is the most famous politician in the US
She has the Clinton political machine and the Rendell machine behind her
Obama has had 6 bruising weeks, including Jeremiah Wright. Bittergate and ABC debate, He has been beat up by the media and the Clinton and Mc Cain campaigns.
And yet as you show , he has increased his %s in just about every group since Ohio  , he is far outraising Clinton in contributions , and he is ahead in the Gallup polls by 10%
But the media has bought into the Clinton propaganda that Hillary is an underdog.
When you ask the wrong questions, you get the wrong answers.

Why? Why are we allowing the Clintons to "bully" us into believing she is "owed" this opportunity to continue... to continue slashing and destroying the Democratic Party? Are we fools - or petrified of the Clintons? Would someone please take charge and remember the original "rules"? She needs to be kicked out - because she obviously is not going to leave willingly until she destroys the party.
Everyone tonight on MSNBC continues to ask the question: Why can't Senator Obama win the "battle ground states" the reason or answer is easy! Many people say they are patriotic but do not practice patriotism. I have visited and/ or lived in these battlegorund states and in many cases the residents will not vote for a black person. These are some of the most segregated areas in our country. Many people believe that only our southern states still promote racism. You are wrong. It is the states like PA, OH, MA, NJ and NY that have some of the most segregated areas that still see America from a different perspective. That is the reality. It is an unfortunate reality and hopefully instead of criticizing racism or who you feel is a racist, instead stop and have a conversation with them and help them to see a candidate for the candidate, not what they are comfortable with or looks like them. For many years African Americans looked past race and rallied behind the candidates, this is not being practiced today. Our United States still has a long way to go!
We're not stupid! it amazes me how the pundits find ways to slam Obama just to weaken his chances of winning the nomination &"close the deal". They want the fight to go on as long as it can to improve McCain's chances of keeping the race close in the general election. Believe me, Billary is in on this also. She knows she can't win this time, so she's out to kill Obama's chances so she can run again in 2012.
Delegate Math. Period. Love ya Clintons...but it's time to give it a rest. You cannot win now Hillary. Do the math.
MSNBC is further to the "left" than FOX is to the "right."  Olberman is absurd, trying to conjure up the persona of Edward R. Murrow.
Looks like neither campaign beat the spread, so both will really spin the results and the race will go on. Most likely scenario is HoDean tries to corner enough supers to put Obama over by late May or early June. Worst thing is to have the FL and MI delegate issue treated as decisive and fight over that at the convention. In the meantime, Obama is essentially being vetted. If he really, really stumbles he could give the supers reason to give it to Hillary, but it's not likely.

P.S. If Obama is the nominee I think WESLEY CLARK should be the running mate.
How can people be so niave and give Hillary priase when she says "Lets bring our troops home" when she voted for our troops to go to war. Obama has a passion for us, the clintons just want there family name to have a legacy. In such a time as now, who will you trust with your sons and daughters lives!!!!!!!
Well that will be the last time we see her!!!!!!!!!
Billary done won the hick vote!! YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a Garlic Nose from PA, all I gotta say is..
"Let's hear it for McCain"
The only way for Hillary to become the nominee is if the superdelegates overturn the will of the voters - even after today, Obama still leads by some 500,000 votes. If that's how this thing comes down, this Obama supporter will vote straight Republican come the fall.
