Delegate update: TN super backs Clinton

Posted: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 2:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Clinton has picked up her first post-Pennsylvania superdelegate, a Red-stater, Rep. John Tanner (TN). Tanner is the first Red State elected official to back Clinton since Blanche Lincoln (AR) on Feb. 7. Is this the beginning of several to come?

Obama got the backing earlier today of Gov. Brad Henry (OK).

Clinton now holds a 263-238 superdelegate lead.
Obama leads by 132 overall: 1,727-1,595.
Obama leads by 157 in the pledged delegate count: 1,489-1,332

The Pennsylvania pledged count: Clinton 80-71 (seven delegates still to be allocated.)

*** UPDATE *** NBC News has allocated two more delegates from Pennsylvania. The delegate split out of there now is Clinton 81-72. There are still five delegates unallocated. Note, however, as we've noted before, that the split from Pennsylvania will likely be higher for Clinton when the counting is done. We've adjusted the numbers above.

Obama also got substantial support from 49 or 50 John Edwards backers and fundraisers in North Carolina.  Wahoo!!!

YES WE CAN!
The Dem. Convention slogn is going to be, "Let's get ready to rumble!!!!!" Because it's obviously going to go down to a credentials fight in Denver.
Let all the States vote. No one will have the required delegates. Let the convention decide who is best qualified to win in Nov. This is best for our Country.
When will Senator Clinton be brave enough to do "Hardball"?

And will Chris Matthews ask her about trying to get delegates from states that she agreed would not be counted as well as her effort to disenfranchise caucus states.

Minnesota is not a small state, and we caucus.  We will also remember her insults.

By the way, for the uninformed...when you caucus, you VOTE for your choice of candidate.
hillary will pick up more super delegates, so much more, she'll take the nomination
Funny how the results are actually a 9% margin (9.2 to be exact) and not 10%.  Your inaccurate rounding is allowing the Clinton campaign to distort the decision as being "double-digits", therefore more decisive than it really is.
wake me when it's over, someone best be keeping an eye on all things clinton, they know they can't win without cheating, let's see a show of hands on how many people think the clintons are capable of cheating? very funny indeed
Does everyone who has lived in the White House have "experience"?  Does Chelsea have enough "experience" to run for POTUS?  If you can't keep you campaign funded, how can you run the economy?  Why do the republicans support her (or at least not attack her)?  If Bosnia was so dangerous, why did she bring Chelsea with her?
OK - so HRC got one and Obama got one - that makes it a wash, right?

I want to hear more about how she's going to keep her campaign afloat with her money situation.  I know she made some money last night but how long will that last?

FR - you REALLY need to get your system fixed.  I have tried to post stuff all day and most of it disappears.  Please improve your blog site so more can participate.  Thanks.
So when this is resolved and Obama is the nominee, won't he have to select a white woman Vice Presidential running mate, in order to avoid alienating hardline Clinton supporters?

This would be a great question for RACE TO THE WHITEHOUSE!!! tonight.
Maybe the spinless un-pledged super delegates will listen when the GOP lead by Scarsborough and Buccanan give them the same arguments as Clinton as to why she should win.  After all, thinking for themselves and showing some leadership is out of there realm of their ability.  Thanks to all Supers who have endorsed and two thumbs down, way down to those who are cowering in the bushes.
Thanks to the DNC, John Mcain will walk away with the contest.
The convention is not simply an event to waist a lot of money on hotel rooms, food, music and baloons.

The purpose of the convention is to officialy nominate a candidate of the Party, not to simply have a party.
drip drip.  I think they both have reservoirs of committed but undeclared super-delegates who want to stay uncommitted as long as possible. They sacrifice one or two a day as needed to keep up appearances.
You Obama folks just keep counting Hillary out, you want this all to just go away, well folks, that iss not going to happen. Hillary is the strongest candiate nation-wide amoungst the variety of demographics and she will be the nominee. She will beat McCain, not Obama. Most- not all - of you Obama backers are vial. I read your blogs, you are not only distasteful and vulgar in your comments, your are arrogant and self-rightous, you show little respect for anything and anyone, you have no shame
Here's an idea that I know won't be adopted by the Clinton and Obama campaigns, but which I think is a good one - from now until May 6, when indiana and North Carolina vote - don't talk about each other - don't say anything about each other - no ads referring to your opponent, no surrogates or press people taking shots at the other campaign.  Talk about anything else - McCain, Iraq, health care, whether you plan to be on line for the 12:00 midnight showing of "Iron Man"- anything other than your opponent.  give the voters in Indiana and North Carolina time to sift through the issues and their thoughts without all the spin and white noise that have been making this race so annoying
One of the problems that is not readily discussed is the way race has been playing in Pennsylvania - age and lack of education are two factors that are linked to being unable to vote for a person of a race other than your own. Although not politically correct there is a correlation to the amount of schooling one has to how a person feels about race.
I want Barbara Boxer as a VP
She is tough as nails
Make Hill-dog look like a chump

Bonnie has it right.  The super delegates are spineless.  Why are they allowing this death march to continue?  I say they should endorse Obama en masse and end this travesty.  She is a wrecker, and nothing more.
I see huge resistance from Old politicians like the guy who just endorsed Clinton duo:-). They never seem to like the change needed for the country...They just want to stick to white men and old politicians which brings no value to current situation. Also they seem to like the person who is so negative and totally distructive to relationsip with other world leaders...Aany you cannot stop people who want to fall in ditch :-)
They never and I mean never do any substantive journalism or investigations any more.  They get e-mails from the Clinton staff and give the media there talking points and just like puppets the media goes on the air and perform for her.   Why won't hey ask her why voters should vote for her with her campaign over 10 million debt.

Obama is a master at raising money and runs his campaign with ruthless efficiency, I wonder if he will run the government the same way.

I wonder if the people who are supporting her, are still going to donate money. Even though she is going to blow it or misspent it on pastries, food and other frills.  She and her husband have made over 109 million over the last six years from 2000 to 2006.   They obviously do well handling their own personal income, why can’t they run their campaign with the same efficiency?

Some of her bills tell the story (one-time expenses)

Enterprise Rent-A-Car - $171,675
Hertz - $46,319
Bellagio hotel - $25,478
A-Plus valet parking - $918
Donuts - $1433
Subway - $2500
Hyvee supermarket - $96,079

Total over 8.7 million still in debt

HRC and the media have conducted themselves miserably over the past few weeks. It actually sickens me to see her smile after her disgusting performance. Sorry but that is how I feel. If she is such a good executive, why is her campaign out of money and and hurting so bad she has to play dirty rovian politics just to tread water? If she had been smart she would not have to lie or play dirty rovian politics and she would have had plenty of money. She is not presidential at all and not a good executive
Every American needs to understand one thing.  It seems to me that the media will do and say anything that will keep Hillary Clinton in the race.  The media will cow tow, step and fetch it to insure Hillary gets her say.  I am so disgusted with the media on all the networks.  The journalism in this country is horrible they are paid for and bought by the Clintons and the GOP.  The media tells you how to vote and why you should vote a certain way.   America needs to understand they can not trust television news they can not trust ABC, FOX NEWS, CNN and MSNBC.   They never and I mean never do any substantive journalism or investigations any more.  They get e-mails from the Clinton staff and give the media there talking points and just like puppets the media goes on the air and perform for her.

When John McCain or Hillary Clinton wins the White House and the country is still falling apart the media are the ones to blame.   So when our country goes to war un-justifiably, or when PACS and lobbyist still have control of our country.   Blame it on the media they are public enemy #1 as far as I am concerned.  Instead of the war terror it should be the war on the media they are the real terrorist.  They are the true enemies of America and can not be trusted.
Superdelegates need to hold their votes.  Obama is not electable.  His coattails will not be carrying any congressmen or women to victory in November.

I support Hillary 100% because she is experienced, has proven she is willing  to work for the middle class, willing to roll up her sleeves and do the work, she is VETTED, she is stronger on the economy, health inssurance,  education, and she will get the troops home on a schedule that works for all concerned.

I am one of those Hillary supporters that will not support Obama.  I would not vote for Obama if Hillary was the vp candidate.  I don't know Obama and I think what we don't know is not good.  I know enough about him to not trust him and I am not going to vote for him.
ATTENTION ALL DEMOCRATS: Everyone needs to realize the Democratic Party belongs to the Bill and Hillary Clinton.  Stop fighting they can do and say what ever they want and when they want.  They can change the rules when it’s necessary, they can lie, cheat, steal and commit election fraud as long as they are alive and in control.  I repeat the Democratic Party belongs to them and know one I mean know one can stop them.  Nobody has power or strength to stop them nobody.  All other democrats have to do what they say when they say.  The journalism in this country is horrible they are paid for and bought by the Clintons and the GOP.  The media tells you how to vote and why you should vote a certain way. They get e-mails from the Clinton staff and give the media there talking points and just like puppets the media goes on the air and perform for her.
It's interesting that this headline focuses solely on Clinton's delegate pick-up.  To avoid bias, why doesn't the headline say:  Clinton and Obama each gain a superdelegate.  Still no mention of the 29+ NC legislators who backed Obama today.  Is this not newsworthy?  Just to give the benefit of the doubt, is the focus on her because she won PA yesterday?  Would think the frontrunner (Obama) would be highlighted in the headline.
To MSNBC/First Read:  Many dems, including Clinton supporters, have pointed to the pledged delegate lead at the end of June as the determining factor.

My calculations hsow that Obama has a "magic number" for pledged delegates of 138.  This means that once he picks up 138 more pledged delegates, his pledged delegate lead will be insurmountable.

Projecting this out, per Mr. Todd's estimates, this should occur in Kentucky.

Perhaps it is this mathematical certainty that the supers have been waiting for given their comments.
Clearly, Hillary Clinton is by far the stronger and best candidate to be the democratic nominee as well as president!
All that matters is the MATH i.e. number of deligates. Clinton fails to understand this concept. Now she has a new point of argument; "Math dos not matter feeling does." since when? She got only 9 deligates from Pa. primary. What is there to brag about.
Do the party a favor and go back to the elitist city the "big apple"
I want Hillary to go to the White House and you should too because she has the experience and she has not sat for 20 years and listened to someone throw out hateful remarks about our country and other races...she fights for everyone of every color!!  During the previous Clinton years, our country was in the best financial shape it had been in in decades....Go Hillary!!!  I love prosperity!! We've got your back in Nevada!!!
FIRST READ: I just want to know when you're going to do a special report on:
http://www.paulvclinton.com/

4/25/08 would be a good time, don't you think?

this isn't conspiracy theory here..this is a Supreme Court scheduled happening. When will you guys recognize this? Considering all the MSM combed through the Rezko trial...I'd say it's VERY warranted that you report on this, in which BOTH clintons are DEFENDANTS in a Supreme Court trial regarding *campaign fraud* of all things..

come on guys....you wanna talk about fair press....just report on the black&white of it, if you don't want to take oppinions...but it SHOULD be reported...because it DOES matter
49 of Edwards supporters endorse Barack Obama!

http://www.observer.com/2008/lot-edwards-supporters-endorse-obama

Stop the Drama!

Vote Obama 08!
This why Supers will pick Obama...
Hillary covertly uses the race card and fear mongering to polarize and overtly exploits gender to garnish her candidacy and now class.
The nomination should not be about either; it should be competency, trust, and problems facing our nation.
2 Bitter, Osama  bin laden,  Rev Wright, Farrahkan, Million Man March, Rezko, (Rezko not Obama was guilty), Pat Buchanan,  Bill Ayers,  typical White grandmother,  Barack Obama is a secret Muslim (so-what),  flag pins, victimizing sexism, elitists, fear mongering are the determinants Hillary has used to win the state of PA.
3 Sleaze not grit is what Hillary is peddling.
4 How dare her evoke abolition and Civil rights; when she provokes covert racism? I will only agree with her in regards to women suffrage.  Progressive when she lives a pre-civil existence.  Labor when she sent jobs overseas, no healthcare, and she never gave New York 200,000 jobs you promised.
5 No thank you Senator Clinton for taking pages from Karl Rove, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly and other ultra other ultra right wing nuts playbooks.  The Republican Party said it will approach Democrats questioning Obama’s past associations whom she have joined forces with.
6 My question is why isn’t her association with Peter Paul who is the plaintiff in the trial against Hillary not Bill not being   questioned? Clearly Hillary Clinton has questionable associations.
7 Women have another role model and believe me I’m not using racial overtones, whom little girls watch every day, Oprah. In addition to that she knows how to manage money.
Stop this civil war Hillary and stick to the issues you spoke of in your victory speech.
As far as Pat Buchanan statements that despite all the money he spent, he got clabbered, the media gave Barack a free pass, is not a true statement.  Anti-Americanism is portrayed everyday, all day, about Barack Obama. He cut her lead in half!  Pat, that is not clabbering. More money that is donated means   more people support. Why do think, Pat, Hillary has raised less support? I say all people don’t want Hillary to think for them.
NEWSFLASH! Today's math is no different than the day before yesterday! The only difference is the democratic party is one step closer to losing the general election to a right wing nut job. In other news, Three marines died in Iraq since yesterday, The U.N. report on Darfur shows the situation has only gotten worse and they won't even begin to be able to help until 2009 because they don't have the equipment and training that the U.S. could easily supply if they werent too busy killing innocent Iraqis, There is a world food crisis that will reach a point of genocide by starvation and each one of us will have blood on our hands, Bush says that democrats are stirring up anti-american sentiment because we wan't to take a minute to look at the Columbian free trade agreement. But, WOW! This WWE style, insult slingin' argument between Obama and HRC supporters sure is neat isnt it?
Montanaro you are showing youself again . Is this the beginning. Yall really are her biggest helpers thats why you dont post half of the remarks made against Hillary.I can not stand the thought of voting for McBush and wont lie and say that I will. But I think that if Clinton continues to act like a Republican and ends up stealing the nomination from Obama with the help of the Bought and  paid for media like you Mr Montanaro. I will recomend that all African American , youth ,and other voters write in Obama. See what that does to the Dnc for their cowardly hiding from Hillary.
Obama won handily in Hawaii, the state he grew up in, and again in Illinois where he is a senator. Clinton won in Pennsylvania, a state she grew up in and in Ne York where she is a senator. The media in the US really over analyses the polls too much.
OMG, she cannot overtake him in pledged dels. Even though I know that superdels have the latitude to vote however they want, for another entity to overturn the will of the majority will leave a bitter taste in the mouths of many. This is beginning to remind me of when the Supreme Court "stole" the elction for"W" in 2000. How in the world will we be able to tout this nation as being a democracy if this B.S. continues to happen? Also, why should any of us bother to vote any more if these " higher powers" simply overturn the vote of the majority. This woman's tactics have totally turned me off!! I  will not vote for her to be dogcatcher. I like dogs too much!!
One thing to ponder Clintonistas...if the Supedelegates "select"  Hillary over the will of the pledged delegates get used to saying "President McCain."  She will not win a state between the East and West Coasts.  She is not the person who wants to be president of all the people.  And if she is planning of ruining the party just to "rescue" it in 4 years that is a testament to the Monarchical egos of the Clinton dynasty.  It'll be nice living in Canada or maybe Spain.
hillary will pick up more super delegates, so much more, she'll take the nomination - B. Arthur

"FR - you REALLY need to get your system fixed.  I have tried to post stuff all day and most of it disappears.  Please improve your blog site so more can participate.  Thanks." --MI Chick

Me too to that MI Chick. Only about 25% of my stuff makes it.

I have noticed certain conditions that seem to make it less likely to be posted.
*comments entered between certain times
*comments on topics more than 2 or 3 back
*comments on topics with many responses
It is tempting to infer that there are also content related reasons but with the other factors it is hard to be sure. But I seem to especially have trouble with posts that are critical of Ronald Reagan, the Pope, and televangelists.  On the other hand, I seem to have much less trouble with very short silly statements.

Pat Huntington, what is your secret? You seem to be able to get 1 or 2 in on every topic with no trouble.

Shame on the Democratic Party and really america.  Ed Rendell made it real clear, that "white men" in PA were not ready to vote for a BLACK man.  This is really the message that should be taken from Hillary's victory.  Why is anyone surprised?  How can OBAMA "close the deal"?  If in fact white men are not ready to vote for a BLACK man, and older american's are still influenced by their racist view, the democratic party is perpetuating RACISM.
The 300lb elephant in the room is the acceptance of OBAMA, as a viable candidate, because some segment of the democratic party is not "ready" for a BLACK president.  He is in a no-win situation, he can't campaign is "blackness" away!!!!
Did we really listen to Gov ED... and have we forgotten about Bill in South Carolina.

That 3/5 thing is alive and well in the DEMOCRACTIC PARTY.  Donna Brazille, get ready to quit the party!!!
Sheryl Crow has endorsed Obama today on her blog after surviving sniper fire.

http://www.sherylcrow.com/blog/
Bob,

It's actually 9.6, which, if rounded up, as most people do, becomes (gasp) 10%. The media, fortunately, has this right.
Im an Independant voter in Florida.  I want to vote for democrat (preferably Obama, but either one will be fine).  I will speak from a swing state needed by both parties.  The longer this goes on, the stronger John Mccain gets here.  I have come to the conclusion that because of the math and the Clinton campaigns not counting on the month of february having to count, she is behind and cant get the pledged delegate win, even with Florida.  She would have to win with the supers, which are going to be reluctant as a whole to go against the voters wishes.  So she may get more supers from now until the end but not enough to win.  So while this goes on Mccain gets stronger in states like my own.  Clinton may have won last night and she may win in Indiana, however she cant win, and the as long as this continues the real loser is the Democratic party.
I am so absolutely sick of the Democratic race. I can not believe the number of totally ignorant people that have had their heads in the sand for the past twenty years. When you scrape the bottom of the septic tank and bring up Hilary Clinton as your best candidate, your learning curve has to be a flat line. I hear al this crap that Obama has no experience, Well then name just ONE thing Hilary EVER did!! That actually amounts to anything other than self serving. Just One. Honestly the ONLY way Hilary can become the nominee is to steal it. And with her negative appeal McCain will have a cake walk. It's really to bad she dodged all those sniper rounds. I believe with all my heart, that if you voted to send Americans to Iraq, don't lie to me and say you support the troops, cause as far as I'm concerned your a traitor.
Senator HClinton winning the big states in the primary mean nothing in the general election - whoever voted for Clinton in those states will vote for Obama (meaning New York, California, etc. -I cannot believe that the people are not loyal democrats who will vote for Obama or Clinton vs. McCain (well most of them). Considering our economic state, Iraq war, and more, I hope that Democrats will not vote on lines of race, gender, etc. in the general election but on the issues -- it would be a sad commentary if they did. Also, if Clinton want to go there, Obama won big in states that are usually Red States. Also, Obama picks up most of the new democratic voters (1st time or in a long time). Super Delegates should go with the will of the people (the votes), party rules (largest number of elected delegates & popular vote); not by state but by the total count from primaries / caucases to date.
Is Senator Clinton Really 4 more years of Bush? Maybe the arguement is not who has met the bar as far as experience to be Commander in Chief but who has failed to learn from lessons that experience should provide...

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran (if it attacks Israel)," Clinton said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."

"In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them," she said.
Hillary Clinton

Every nation in every region now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists.
George W. Bush

I just want you to know that, when we talk about war, we're really talking about peace.
George W. Bush

I want justice. And there's an old poster out West, I recall, that says, "Wanted: Dead or Alive".
George W. Bush

The Iraqi forces are conducting the Mother of all Retreats.
Dick Cheney

"Bomb, bomb, bomb, Bomb, bomb, Iran."
John McCain

Tell the Vietnamese they've got to draw in their horns or we're going to bomb them back into the Stone Age.
--Gen. Curtis LeMay, May 1964

I'm not going to be the first American president to lose a war.
--Richard Nixon, Oct. 1969

Let elect someone you learns from the past and brings the right experience to the job of Commander in Chief

The media has their wish now they can sing their Hillary songs of praise.  When Sen Obama wins it last for a minute and news moves on and now we will hear the Hillary praise for days.  She say "screw em" in 195 about the mddle class, she lies about sniper fire and NAFTA and the media says hardly anything of it and the Rev Wright talk still continues though Sen Obama never said any of the comments himself and Sen Obama saying people are bitter which is true in some cases but their are people trying to cover up the truth of the matter is being continuously spoken about.  There is definitely biased opinions going on by people who are afraid of change in our politics and do not want to see a brighter day.
Matt; Valparaiso, IN:

You're absolutely right -- Dems might just nominate a white woman to balance it. Obama/Sebelius '08!
Well, you can always hope, Domenico, that this translates into more to come.

I think it's hilarious that after her so-called big victory, one which everyone pretty much knew was coming, that there's virtually crickets from the supers. In fact, it's a wash as of now since Obama picked up one. She can't even gain on him after winning last night.

Everyone wants to know why Obama can't shut her down – well, we good people of Indiana will, with the help of N.C., take care of that in about two weeks.
Most of the superdelegates who are going to endorse Obama want to do it after he wins obviously. expect at least 30 post NC and Indiana.

Btw, 9% is not double digits Hillary, I know how much you hate the intractability of math and all.
