McCain misses most votes of candidates?

Posted: Wednesday, April 23, 2008 4:12 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From MSNBC.com's Andy Merten
This afternoon, Obama and Clinton will return to Washington, D.C., to make an appearance at their day jobs for the first time in two weeks. They will be voting on a Senate bill that will make it easier for individuals to sue employers over unequal pay -- a politically contentious measure, which has invoked the threat of veto from the White House.

It’s no secret that the demands of running for the presidency can sometimes interfere with the daily voting duties of congressional members looking to further their careers. Late last year, Obama caught flak for not voting on a non-binding resolution declaring the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization, after he sought to use Clinton’s yay-vote to paint her as too hawkish.

As of today, Obama has missed slightly fewer than 40 percent of his Senate votes since the beginning of 2007, while Clinton’s absentee rate is just under 30 percent.

But McCain has topped both candidates, missing a staggering 58 percent of his votes during the 110th Congress, according to the Washington Post’s congressional votes database

To put this in perspective, McCain has now missed more votes than Sen. Tim Johnson of South Dakota, who suffered a brain hemorrhage in December 2006 and was unable to return to the Senate until fall of last year. McCain has now missed nine votes more than Johnson.

But the McCain campaign maintains that the senator is continuing to serve his constituency by taking his message on the road and voicing it on a national scale.

“The platform that Senator McCain has been afforded in his presidential campaign is a unique and powerful force for the people of Arizona,” spokesman Tucker Bounds said. “His mission on the campaign trail in every way affects the people of Arizona, and he takes that very seriously.”

It’s also worth pointing out, however, that Maj. Leader Harry Reid (NV), a Democrat, sets the agenda. In fact, today he delayed the equal pay vote to later in the day, which gives both Clinton and Obama time to return from campaigning in Indiana.

Still, McCain, who is in Kentucky today, wrapped up his party's nomination a month-and-a-half ago -- after the March 4th primaries.

Unbelievable!
In Clinton's claim to have the most votes, not only does she count Florida and Michigan, she gives Obama a big zero for Michigan!  Count the voters who said NOT HILLARY in Michigan and she's back to being way behind.

This woman will say anything -- she is disgusting and if she is the nominee, she just lost my vote.  Disgusting.
one less Republican vote in the Senate. I can't complain.
Seriously McCain?!! You should be there all the time now you have the dems doing all your work for you since they're busy tearing each other down.
President ELECT BARACK OBAMA, continue to play the game!
Yep - Sounds like the kind of person that should be running the Oval Office.  Seems to really care about the "little people".  The constant public servant.  McCain should worry about the JOB that he has, not the promotion that he wants.  My boss bases my promotions on past performances - and if I don't perform, than I would worry about losing my JOB...
Who has time to vote in the Senate if you're John McCain?  He might miss the early-bird senior special at The Golden Corral!

Funny you should mention Tim Johnson (though what happened to him is certainly nothing to laugh at)...I think McSame's decision to embrace the policies of George W. Bush represents his own brain damage.
The only reasons that McCain is still out on the campaign trail is to keep his face in the news and to raise money.  I think that he should be back in the Senate.  To have missed that many votes in the Senate does a disservice to the citizens of Arizona.  He needs to be working for them a little more.  I don't care who sets the agenda.  He should make a little more time for the job he has now.

Clinton and Obama should aim to do that as well -- more time in the Senate.
I'm glad for once this statistic finally came out. It is Hilary despite campaigning for the Presidency who has actually performed the job by which she got voted for far more than Obama or McCain.

She's also attended sub committe hearings on foreign affairs (you know the one's that Obama headed but did not chair or had any meetings held) during the campaign.

I guess we know now who's doing the work and not just talking.

Go for it Hilary. I for one appreciate your hardwork.

MSNBC for the love of God there is nothing wrong with my post - please post it!
Did he miss any 'war' votes? I doubt it. He's not present today because McCain is not interested in equal pay legislation.

Hillary is a hypocrite who did nothing about equal pay for her husband's press secretary who happened to be female. Hillary wants to ride on feminist's coat tails, but as per usual, never returns the favor.

If Clinton steals this election through back room sleaze, or by continuing to slander Obama, I will keep cable news on a 24 hour cycle, during the GE, and enjoy watching the GOP rip her throat out. She won't be phased, but it will be a consolation to me.

Oh, and did I mention I will not vote for her. I will vote for Ralph Nader. He has ideas I can get behind.

Maybe he's afraid his plane will get shot down on the way back to Washington?
This is why the Pennsylvania republican results are
McCain:  72%  575,543
Paul:  15.9%  125,705
Huckabee:  11.4%  89,957

Congratulations to the 125,705 who voted for Ron Paul
and the 89,957 who voted for Mike Huckabee! Better to vote for who you believe in than to compromise and vote for McCain just because you're told he's the nominee.
I've always believed that what this country needs is more lawsuits.
Obama can NOT win against John McCain !! Certainly they'll start to back her Thank God!
Has anyone noticed, Michele Obama seems like Satan's daughter? And we all know what a lemming, liar & hypocrite he is! NOBAMA!
Shhh! He's still sleeping.

Or maybe he's was in line at Furr's for the blue-plate special.
Clinton and Obama won't get to the Senate floor. Security will stop them for lack of recognition.
I wold love to see McCain or anyone from the RNC do the same to Rush Limbaugh.  Tell him to stop trying to interfere with the Democrat Primary.  If we as Republicans can't win against whomever the dems pick, then woe is us.  But for us to try to cherry pick the opposition nominee by playing games, makes us look foolish, and look desperate.  It may have been funny at first, but now I see it as plain old unpatriotic, and leads us down a slippery slope. What would we say if they were crossing party lines to change our nominee?  We would be rightly pissed.  I think McCain and the RNC should address this before we all look like fools, and may wind up with someone in the White House that no one really wants.
Big Deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Neither One Of Them Does What They Are Suppose To Do Regardless.
McCain simply should not be in the race. He was the best of a weak lot. It does not matter if he votes or not at this point because it is well known that the Republican agenda he supports has nothing to offer to government that will move this country forward. It is an agenda that has failed us and the country and will continue to do so. We cannot afford more Republican mismanagement and thinking that has got us into a mess we will not get out of without long-term damage to the security, the economy, and near future abilities to lead the world.
I hope the Republican doesn't bring that gabbage up this year because McCain has missed most vote in congress
If you like Bush turning over governing to others, you'll love Grumpy Grampa.
I think Defense Secretary Gates needs to mail a copy of his speech to General Petraeus.
--------
Gates flew to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., to deliver a speech to cadets and faculty members. He encouraged young soldiers to “take on the mantle of fearless, thoughtful but loyal dissent” when the situation calls for it, and to “defend your integrity as you would your life,”
does anyone think hillary is any less 'hawkish' than mccain? they both scare the hell out of me with their blabber about attacking iran. people are foolish to think hillary wants us out of iraq, the war machine is one of her biggest backers
Democrat 527 Ads:  Just Rerun all the events that happened when McSame was Born.  Here are a few to get you on your way:

The Spanish Civil War began
Radio was first used in a presidential campaign
Total federal spending was $8.23 Billion
WWII had not started yet
Jazz was still "underground"
Rock & Roll was not yet invented

McSame four more years, four more years.
I am amzed at the McCain campaign suggesting that going around the country is the same as voting for legislation. Of course, he also claims we're winning the war, but will still need to be there for 100 years when no American will be injured in combat. Then, he's the one who admits not understanding economics, but criticizes the Obama and Clinton's economic plans. Where is the straight talk? perhaps, it's taken the express lane to flip-flop land. Also, why haven't any of you in the media followed up on Clinton's outrageous statement that she'll nuke Iran! I believe Barry Goldwater made a similiar remark that cost him the elction in '64. of course, Clinton was a Goldwaterite in those days. Why also did no one in the media follow-up on Rendell's embracing of Farrakhan and Clinton's assertion she'd dustance herslef from anyone who did that? I suppose because she's not Obama and you're all acting like her PR firm! carson, NY
It is just a senior moment.  He forgot that he is still employed by America.
Nelson Mandela spent a lifetime inprisoned by one of the most racist, and oppresive countries of modern times. Yet when he won his freedom, within no time, he rose to be the President of his Nation . What does that tell us about the wrecthedness of America's soul? She does'nt like to be admonished for her ill deeds. We are steeped in engrained bigotry. It is no wonder we are denounced, and rejected by so many who witness the reprehensible nature of our national character, around the world.
McNut - a slacker AND a loser!

Obama/Clinton '08, Clinton/Obama '08
Obama has missed just under 40 percent of his Senate votes since the beginning of 2007??? I bet he was voting "Present" the rest of the time.

I'm glad Hillary is better able to balance running for president and doing to job she was elected to do.
I live in Arizona and McCain isnt helping me. He brags about zero pork barrel projects, so our roads and bridges and schools and whatnot suffer thanks to his laissez-faire approach to his day job. But he never met a lobbyist he didnt like.
Thanks a lot. Go Obama!
John "Absent" McCain.  Just what we need in a president.

Maybe he could see to it that the wingnuts he'd appoint to the Supreme Court had similar attendance problems.
McNut - a slacker AND a loser!

not even sure what the purpose of this article was. geez...
Maybe if the democrat-led Congress would start putting forth some legislation WORTH A CRAP instead of letting everything simmer and blaming it on BUSH, McCain would be interested in going back.

Where's the education bills?

Where's the health care bills?

Where's the drastic changes to the economy we were promised?

None of this article VI, paragraph two, line 3a crap. Some actual REFORM???

These are NOT Presidential responsibilities, but the responsibilities of elected law makers--- but somehow it's all Bush's fault, right?

I wouldn't vote on this crap either.

McCain 08
It has nothing to do with McCain being an absentee and everything to do with the fact that Reed and the Dems. trying to embarass him into either flip-flopping or taking controversial positions.  The campaign knows this, which is why they're not taking the bait.  McCain will be in DC when it suits his Presidential themes (i.e. pork barrel spending, Petraus, etc.)
The citizens of Arizona need to get on this and start complaining a.s.a.p.  He has a job that he was elected to do there and he needs to take it seriously regardless of his other lofty aspirations that are very likely not going to pan out.

And I would like to touch on Stuart from Tucson's comments about the pork barrel projects.  This frustrates the hell out of me as well because we have a 9 trillion dollar deficit and those pork barrel projects add up to 10 million dollars (McCain doesn't think any of us know this, of course).  That's like taking a drop of water out of the Pacific Ocean and thinking there's less water in there.  The only way we lower our debt considerably is to cut the overseas spending.  There's nothing else.  He just doesn't get it.

For all you hacks saying that Obama won't have a chance in this election, just turn your attention to the one fact that the media is not talking about: In the Pennsylvania primary for the republican candidates, John McCain won with 525,000 votes. All the votes combined for republicans totaled a little over 700,000. Obama had 1 million votes in Pennsylvania last nite. Even if 30% of Hillary's supporters vote for McCain, Obama will still win by a large number with the remaining Hillary voters who would vote for him.  The news affilliates don't tell us this because they wouldn't be able to sensationalize the election like they're doing. You guys, this is just for ratings, the primary is over.

Obama 08

Sen. MCCAIN has won his half of the draw, and is doing his thing. But he's not REALLY in play at the moment. So, I see everyone making him this kind of
IMPENETRABLE MONOLITH of virtue. Despite his qualities, this is not exactly the case.  The Dems are at war and we're going over the gory details but putting The Republican who can vanquish all, off on the horizon, out of focus. Lookin' good, from here.  Put a little HD on it, and
there are some flaws there too. No Mt. Olympus.
Isn't this 'old news'?
HE NEVER SHOWS UP TO VOTE FOR THE ISSUES THAT WILL HELP STRUGGLING AMERICANS.  NO SURPRISE HERE

THIS IS A SEN. WHO STILL AND HAS SAID HE WILL NOT VOTE FOR THE NEW GI BILL THAT ISN'T PERFECT BUT WILL GIVE OUR HEROES AND THEIR FAMILIES BETTER BENEFITS.

THIS IS THE VERY SEN. WHO SAYS HE WILL CONTINUE TO SEND OUR SONS, DAUGHTERS, HUSBANDS, MOTHERS TO WAR YET HE WILL NOT SUPPORT A BILL TO BETTER THEIR LIVE AND THEIR FAMILIES LIVES.

MANY HAVE DIED AND MANY HAVE BEEN WOUNDED AND ARE DISABLED FOR LIFE.  THEY DESERVE BETTER, MANY CANNOT GET JOBS THEY ARE NOW SPEAKING OUT ON CNN.  ONE LADY CAN ONLY GET A PIZZA JOB WAITING TABLES MANY ARE ON THE STREETS.  WHY DID SOMEONE HAVE TO TELL CONGRESS ABOUT THE CONDITIONS AT WALTER REED HOSPITAL ISN'T THAT WHY WE PAY THEM

OUR HEROES AND THEIR FAMILIES DESERVE THE VERY BEST LIFE HAS TO OFFER, GREAT JOBS, EXCELLENT PAY WHILE SERVING AND AFTER SERVICE, OUTSTANDING HEALTHCARE, AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT MAKES THEIR LIVES EASIER TO LIVE.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

AMERICA WE NEED TO REALLY GET THIS.
Why does he need to vote?  He knows his buddy GWB will do his bidding for him.
Sucking up to the Media must be a full-time obligation!  Maybe he should step down and allow another AZ Party loyalist prop up the failing Bush adgenda.

Fat chance.
It has been widely reported on every Media outlet that Sen. McCain has missed more days in the Senate than any other Senator that is not disabled.

Why is this a surprise?

No reason he's not familiar with ECONOMICS
wow, a horde of demoasses to say the least. mccain has done far more during over two decades than obama who is all talk with no substance and hillarious whose claim to be electable is that she was there for eight years? well so was the gardener so should the gardener run? never have the democrats have such a lame choice which makes an otherwise boring mccain look decent.
Has anyone given a thought to the idea Senator McCain might just be tired??  Fatigue??  A little too old to keep up??
EQUAL PAY SHOULD BE THE NORM NOW AS WE ARE NOT STILL IN THE 1950's OR 1960's,! AS FOR THIS BILL TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR INDIVIDUALS TO SUE OVER UNEQUAL PAY" A VETO WILL BE NICE AND OR A !AS MOST PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY OUT AND A LAWSUIT IS JUST WHAT THEY NEED! ANOTHER DEMOCRATIC WAY TO TRY TO PLEASE THE PEOPLE FOR VOTES!
Sounds like he is as useless a senator as he would be a president!
And he is the candidate that says "I will be the President for ALL people."  He calls Obama an elitist?  Who is THE elitist when he can't come off the campain trail when he's running against no one?  Who is THE elitist when he can't come off the campaign trail, for those in America who are in the minority, and who suffer from discrimination?
Maybe he did this on purpose, so no one knows that he would vote against Americans who are being discriminated against by corporations?
But, he will get a pass.  No one will ask him this question.  It's too tough to ask...unlike lapel pins, and a word "bitter".  How he votes in the senate and how he would make decisions against the working class as President, is not important to the media, and certainly not to the American voters.
What is brittany spears doing today?
How about Paris?
Clinton's NEW American math (another Clinton lie) is "fun"!
THAT is important to the brain dead American voters...says the media!
I guess he retired and NO ONE EVEN NOTICED!!
