First thoughts: Wright reappears

*** Wright reappears…: Obama had himself a bad day yesterday, and he wasn’t even on the campaign trail. Thanks to the advanced excerpts of a Rev. Jeremiah Wright interview on PBS (which airs tonight at 9:00 pm ET), as well as Wright's dismissal of Obama's criticism of him as just politics, this wasn't something the Obama campaign could have been pleased with. That said, if the Moyers interview -- which will likely only be watched by Obama's PBS-watching base, but will also be picked up by others -- ends up humanizing Wright, it could be helpful in the long term. But short term, his appearance wasn’t helpful in a week the Clinton campaign is ramping up its argument that Obama isn’t electable.

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports Sen. Barack Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, says controversial statements from his sermons were taken out of context.

*** … And so does Bill: But will Bill Clinton -- and the comments he made earlier this week about Obama playing the race card -- overshadow Wright today? It might happen, thanks to these comments by Rep. Jim Clyburn, the highest-ranking African American in Congress. “In an interview with The New York Times late Thursday, Mr. Clyburn said Mr. Clinton’s conduct in this campaign had caused what might be an irreparable breach between Mr. Clinton and an African-American constituency that once revered him. ‘When he was going through his impeachment problems, it was the black community that bellied up to the bar,’ Mr. Clyburn said. ‘I think black folks feel strongly that that this is a strange way for President Clinton to show his appreciation.’” More: “Clyburn added that there appeared to be an almost ‘unanimous’ view among African-Americans that Mr. and Mrs. Clinton were ‘committed to doing everything they possibly can to damage Obama to a point that he could never win.’” Clyburn's the first major Dem leader to give voice to the speculation that Clinton is staying in to prepare for 2012. By the way, Clyburn is still officially uncommitted but given the opinions he's expressing, is he really?

*** The CW is now set: Two new Indiana polls are out that show the race there to be as close as we have expected it to be. Per a South Bend Tribune/Research 2000 poll (conducted April 21 to April 24), it’s Obama 48%, Clinton 47%. And an Indy Star/WTHR poll -- conducted (April 20 to April 23) by Ann Selzer, who famously got Iowa right -- has it Obama 41%, Clinton 38%. The biggest surprise in the Selzer survey is Obama's strength against McCain -- he leads him in Indi-freaking-ana! Clinton's basically even with McCain. Is the GOP brand in THAT bad of shape in reliably red Indiana? According to these and other polls, this race doesn’t look like Ohio or Pennsylvania at all, where Clinton had significant leads two weeks out. Rather, it looks like a jump ball. Meanwhile, the Washington Post cements the CW about North Carolina: To change the race, Clinton needs to upset Obama here, or get awfully close to it. "North Carolina, with its large African American population, has long been seen as a firewall for Obama after contests in Ohio, Pennsylvania and elsewhere that favored Clinton. A win here and in Indiana, which also votes May 6, could cement his status as the front-runner.”

VIDEO: Chuck Todd talks about the potential for a general election fight in Indiana and Majority Leader Harry Reid's assertion that he may call on superdelegates to pledge their support, soon.

*** Track the ad spending: What's going on with Clinton's money? According to various sources, here's what we know right now regarding TV ad buys: Obama is up in Indiana, North Carolina, Oregon, and now Kentucky. Clinton is on par with Obama in Indiana and has a little less money on the air than Obama in the Tar Heel State. This will be a good way to find out just how much of Clinton's initial $10 million windfall is useful in the primary. Currently she's not up in any states beyond IN and NC, but $10 million is more than enough for those two states. So watch the buys closely in these two states plus Kentucky, West Virginia, and Oregon to see how deep the Clinton campaign’s resources are.

*** Jumping ship? This piece by Tom Edsall in the Huffington Post is bound to be a topic of discussion today: “In a blink of an eye, the media has jumped ship from the Obama campaign and become a crucial Clinton ally, pressing just the message -- that Obama is a likely loser in the general election -- that Hillary and her allies have been promoting for the past six weeks… For Hillary, the shift is a potential lifesaver as she struggles to keep her head above water; without it, she would, metaphorically, drown.” The media’s constant refrain, Edsall’s piece points out, is that exit polls show Obama faring poorly with working-class voters, and that could doom him in the fall. But as one of us wrote yesterday, has this exit-poll analysis gone a little too far? After all, when McCain was losing evangelicals, weekly church-goers, and Republicans without college degrees -- even after the he became the presumptive GOP nominee -- no one was declaring that he’d have a huge problem with these folks in the fall. Can exit polls in a primary race tell us as much about the general election as the chattering class is claiming when you’re dealing with different candidates and different voters?

*** What are the supers thinking? While the focus after Pennsylvania is all on Obama, Elizabeth Drew has a piece in the Politico reminding us all the flaws that Hillary would bring to the table in a general election -- flaws that the superdelegates aren’t forgetting. Clinton, she writes, still hasn't answered the question marks over her head: Can she be a helpful leader of the Democratic Party? Can she have a better track record at building the party than her husband did? Right now, she doesn't have to answer those questions because she's the challenger; it's Obama's burden. But the undecided superdelegates are remembering the original reasons they didn't rush to her side in the first place. Ultimately, if she's to convince the supers to deny Obama the nomination, she needs to answer the concerns Dems originally had with her.

*** What will it take? Yesterday, Obama picked up Oregon Rep. David Wu, and has rolled out three superdelegates to Clinton’s one despite Clinton’s Pennsylvania primary victory. Clinton very nearly reached that 10-point mark in Pennsylvania, and superdelegates don’t yet appear to be moved. Clinton leads in the superdelegate count 263-240, the closest the count has been. Obama leads overall: 1,731-1,597. In the pledged count, Obama is up 1,491-1,334. There are 292 superdelegates still to be had (229 of those are named; there are 63 vacancies/add-ons).

*** GOP targets Obama: The LA Times runs a piece on the GOP ramping up its attacks -- on TV and radio -- against Obama. Once again, the CW has been overturned: A year ago, the assumption was the Democratic nominee was going to have the time and resources to define the GOP nominee. Well, it appears the Republican Party is getting the head start on defining Obama, thanks to the protracted race. In fact, it couldn't have worked out better -- as Clinton's attacks on Obama are helping to reinforce the GOP attacks. The Republican Party can afford to ignore Clinton for now because 1) they don't believe she'll be the nominee and 2) they've spent 16 years defining her to swing voters.

*** On the trail: Clinton begins her day in Jacksonville, NC and then heads to Indiana, where she stumps in Bloomington, Gary, and East Chicago; McCain is in Little Rock, AR, where he visits and holds a media avail at Arkansas Baptist College and then goes to Oklahoma City; and Obama, in Indiana, holds a rally in Bloomington (about an hour before Clinton’s event there) and a town hall in Kokomo. Also, Bill Clinton is in Oregon, and Chelsea Clinton and Michelle Obama are in Indiana.

Countdown to North Carolina, Indiana: 11 days
Countdown to West Virginia: 18 days
Countdown to Kentucky and Oregon: 25 days
Countdown to Election Day 2008: 193 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 270 days

Why does the Gallup daily poll between Obama and Clinton always contract at the end of the week, and opens up again during mid-week?  Can anyone explain that?
Thank You Rep. David Wu.

Your man of great foresight and courage!!!
Hillary would have to be out of mind or she is into pain to want to run the gauntlet again.  She can run again in 2012, plenty of time to find new problems she will face then.

Hillary makes $10 million dollars in 24 hours (allegedly) and she is $10 million in debt.  She pays off the bills and goes out an spends more money on advertising.  So you could say she could be $10 million in debt by the end of April.  After seeing some of the spending in her campaign finance reports, she thinks she is the queen of England.

I only have one comment to those delegates who are planning to support Obama.   Don’t act stupid, don’t get overwhelming with the promotion and the millions of dollars that Obama is spending in making Hillary look bad, in making his case or trying to project a Super Obama,  the reality is that with all the friends that Obama has, with so many questionable friends and comment from Obama, I don’t think that many people will support him.

Yes, there are some who just hate Clinton, but just consider this,  Hillary has been attacked by the media in so powerful way that I don’t think no one candidate has been before,  Obama is spending 3-1 or 4-1 and he is so popular with so many money, but he still cant close the deal.

Yes, African American vote is important, but you don’t win the election just with the AA votes either with the Latino vote only.

The reality is that Hillary R. Clinton is more experience, more powerful and more prepared to face McCain than Obama, because the only Obama can present is he is against the war, and 98% of the AA support him,  oh, yeah, he is good speaker, but guess what?  You don’t win the presidency with it.
Remember, Obama is the product of the Media and the effort of the AA community who want desperate a black president.  Well, Hillary is the best.  I can say this, Obama is not going to win the general election, so, lets play safe here, VOTE FOR HILLARY
Perfect timing for Wright to come out from under his rock. I'm certain Obama is pleased.
Please do link or mention Geoff Garin's op-ed column
"It is just not fair"in Todays Washington Post.
It is only fair!
It was good that we had the opportunity to see Rev. Wright, the reality. We all know that the select soundbites will continue to be exploited by unscrupulous politicians, and not just Republicans. We may be surprised to see a candidate running for office as a Democrat conspire with Richard Mellon Scaife and the "vast right wing conspiracy" but such a practice is deeply rooted in our past.
So now Wright is throwing Obama under the bus. Peas in a pod these two. The interview "humanizes" Wright? Sure, I guess as much as it would "humanize" David Duke. So Wright can now be termed a human bigot?
Don't worry obama. The media will protect your lying butt. You will keep your racism secret a while longer. You will continue to deceive naive people. After all you spent a term in office and been a community organizer. What more experience is needed to lead the USA. What a change you will be.
Well, it appears the Republican Party is getting the head start on defining Obama, thanks to the protracted race. In fact, it couldn't have worked out better -- as Clinton's attacks on Obama are helping to reinforce the GOP attacks.
*******************************************************

It appears to me that Hillary Clinton is running on the wrong ticket.

Who would have thunk it?  Hillary and Bill Clinton - who in the 1990s declared that the 'vast-right-wing-conspiracy' was out to destroy their good names - would team up with said conspiracy to attempt to destroy a political rival IN THEIR OWN PARTY.

Does it seem like we are stuck in the classic Clint Eastwood movie "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"?  Obama, Clinton and McCain are all triangulating against each other at the fateful cemetary conclusion.  Obviously, I think Obama is Clint's "Good" character.  HRC is the Lee Van Cleef "Bad" character, and Mc Cain is the Eli Wallach "Ugly" character.
Good Friday morning fellow "First Read" - ers!

A song to brighten your day - with my apologies to The Byrds - that reflects the feelings from yesterday...

Have a good weekend!
This is the first time I'm really following a primary season, and, I must say, this is an odd way to select a nominee. Instead of intelligence and capability, the race is being decided on who can withstand the slime the other candidate throws at him or her. Instead of a nomination based on reason, we have a nomination based on the lowest common denominators in our society-- a black racist appearing in the form of a maniacal so-called pastor and white racists appearing in the form of  poor, old, white, uneducated voters.

Is it any wonder America is in decline?
Leave Wright alone.

HE is not running for ANYTHING. He is an EX-Pastor.

This presidential race has gotten SO off track,  I feel like I'm watching Melrose Place!

Never any articles on policy! It's like EVEN Time has turned into TMZ!

Wow, what money and ratings have done to democracy!
The republican Rove strategy of winning elections dictates they will use Rev. Wright Ads not so much to woo over Democrats, but to scare the heck out of Independents, and to galvanize their red-neck base in the rural souther states.  It's not right, but you know its gonna happen...and McCain is already playing his role in this Rove type strategy, as the good cop to the 527 bad cop.
MSNBC and NBC has run the Wright video so much lately for free the 527s are laughing all the way to the bank.  Then they wonder why race is an issue????  Is MSNBC the new you-tube.

Bob, Chicago
That pastor was right when he said, Obama said what he has to say as a politician…  and it was clear to me that the pastor clarify more and more that Obama is just talking, but he cant separate from he loving pastor, because there is a relationship of 20 years, so, HOW CAN YOU BE SO CLOSE FOR 20 YEARS TO SOMEONE AND DON’T GET INFLUENCED BY HIS TEACHING?  I just don’t belief Obama and putting together what his wife said about being a American, his relationship with other people, very questionable people, DO I REALLY WANT HIM IN THE WHITE HOUSE?
One simple answer, NO, PLEASE NO.

I hope the AA community stop that race thing, and look Obama as he really is, don’t lets your emotion and his nice speeches control you, think, THINK, THINK, thinking and evaluating can help you see the real Obama.  GOD SAVE US FROM OBAMA AND HIS FRIENDS.
Obama should easily win Indiana, but yet it's close. He really can't close the deal, can he? The man is unelectable.
Dear First Read,
"Hillary's negatives" has been the battle cry of Obama supporters for as long as this campaign has gone on (and for those in the media who shill for him too).
It's totally worn out at this juncture, and certainly a little "ironic" in light of Obama's associations with domestic terrorists, outspoken bigots, and indicted Cook (or is it CROOK) County political racketeers.
I hope more people than Clyburn realize that Clinton's now running for 2012 and is simply hoping to do enough damage to Obama to keep him from winning in November.

It's shocking and cynical but we're talking about someone prepared to declare the Michigan vote a victory and count the votes from an election where her opponents name wasn't even on the ballot.
I am completely disappointed with HRC and I will never vote for her.  She is destroying the democratic party with her whopper sized ego.  It's disgusting and the supers need to throw the freakin kitchen sink at her.
HRC will not be happy 'till she has a riot on her hands.  People have had ENOUGH of her crap.
The Indiana polling reinforces the defining characteristic of every General Election winner that the media has ENTIRELY forgotten.  This isn't about working class white voters or evangelicals or any other partisan group.  Winning the General Election is ALWAYS about -independent- voters.  Clinton simply cannot compete with McCain with independent voters.  You cannot win with your base alone.  Clinton versus McCain, Clinton loses the independent vote.  McCain versus Obama, McCain loses the independent vote.  Wake up America!
I think the Media has gotten ridiculous on the Rev Wright matter.  Rev Wright has his job and Obama has his job to do, and nobody is throwing anyone under the bus like the Media would like people to think.  No wonder Bush got elected.
sue...
Obama's 20 YEAR association with Jeremiah Wright and his BIGOTED, RACIST point of view is fair game.
If Obama hadn't of started this by allowing his people to accuse Hillary and Bill of racism, it wouldn't be in the headlines now.
Don't start no $#!+, won't be no $#!+, I always say.
I cannot believe how racist some people are at this time in our history.  Have we not learned a single thing?  Can't everyone see that we bleed the same?  I am again disgusted with the racism that still exists.  No wonder our young people are screaming and demanding CHANGE!  They've had enough hatred and deceit.  Somebody put an end to this madness already.  I have tuned out cable news as all it does is repeat the same thing over and over and over until we're all ready to vomit.
Where is the one to UNIFY the Dem's!!!!?
I'm excited to vote for Hillary in my state's primary!
If white people were as racist as Blacks then wouldnt 97 % vote for hilliary maybe someone can explain the voting by race to me and tell me how that isnt pure and simple racism but luckly for obama young old and inbetween white people dont vote in a monolithic movement too bad for those RACIST CLINTONS remember the guy had a term of endearment used about him as "the first black president because how he heard what black people had to say and helped as well as any president since LBJ has done and now he is a racist but 97percent black vote for obama dosent make them raciost well im just a stupid non college type maybe some of you high faluting types could school me? I see MSNBZZZZZ divide the dems has worked better than fox could ever have WELL DONE
THANK YOU, Rep. Clyburn!!!!!

As the majority whip, I thank you for ACCURATELY voicing the opinions of African Americans all over this nation.

At times I have been dumbfounded that all the pundits seem to agree that Clinton supporters defection numbers are so high if Obama gets the nomination. One of them even said that he expects the black voters to show solid support for Hillary if she wins the nomination. Really???? He must not know any black people.

What they continue to overlook, however, is that African American are the party's MOST RELIABLE BASE and has been for years. And if we are disenfranchised, as Clinton is trying to do, it will spell disaster for the Democratic party, not just this election year, but years and years and years to come. We've had enough of this.

My message to the democratic party: Give Hillary Clinton the nomination and WATCH what the black vote will do for you.

Vicki
Oh, is THAT how it is Laffincow?
"Float" the idea of civil unrest if Obama and his childish supporters don't get their own way?
Isn't that what CHILDREN do when they want something they either can't have or don't deserve....throw a temper tantrum?
Only a fool would vote for McCain...because you'll get more of the same Bush, but wrapped up in his own Depends.
McCain will ruin this country worse than Bush

It is obvious to me that MSNBC has gone from neutral to pro Hillary.  Especially Chris Matthews.  I believe Governor Rendell had a conversation with Chris as he has markedly changed in the past two weeks.  Kudo's to Keith Olbermann for taking the moral high ground to say it like it is.
As for Reverend Wright, he should speak his mind.  The more he talks now, the less impact the "issue" will be in November. Numbers man, Chuck Todd, is the one I listen to.  If you split the remaining 408 pledged delegates in half, Obama will have 1933. He will have most states, most population, most delegates. Barack will have earned it, regardless of Hillary's spin. Supers know they have a better chance getting reelected with Barack than Hillary. That's the bottom line. PS, Barack will ever so slightly win in Indiana.
I hear the sounds of flip flops down the hall...must be McCain...he's showing his true do and say anything to get elected colors.
Media Keeping this 'Race' Going
www.tomasoreport.com

Last year when i moved to New York, I went to my first game at Yankee Stadium to see the Yankees play my beloved Chicago White Sox. By the fifth inning, the Yankees were winning 11-0. The game was not technically over because they hadn't played 9 innings, but I left the stadium since in my mind the Yankees had 'closed the deal' on that game. When I got back to my apartment, I came to learn that the White Sox scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th to lose 11-4...big deal. Well, to complete my analogy, Hillary Clinton's win in Pennsylvania last night equates to those 4 runs my White Sox scored.
However, if you listen to the media (mainstream and non) and to the Clinton campaign, you'd think there's an exciting and close 'Race'. Last night, many media pundits asked, 'Why can't Obama close the deal</a>?" My answer: He already has. According to MSNBC political director Chuck Todd, if Obama wins Indiana and North Carolina (May 4th's primaries), Clinton would have to win 80% of the votes in each of the remaining primaries.  As it stands now she would have to win 70% of the votes in each state. So maybe the democrats haven't played all 9 innings, but lets be honest, Obama HAS closed the deal.
Yet, the New York Post's front-page headline "Take That- Hillary slams Bam", New York Times " Clinton clearly outduels Obama in Pennsylvania", Chicago Sun-Time "The tide is turning", Chicago Tribune "The fight goes on". The list goes on, but you get the point. The media has a vested interest in keeping this race going for obvious reasons. The Obama-Clinton "race" draws huge ratings for the networks, so it is completely understandable why they would do so; however the media is completely missing the real headline from last nights Clinton victory.
Before Obama campaigned in Pennsylvania he was down 25% in the polls, no doubt due to the Clinton brand name, for the last 4 weeks it had been 4 on 1 (Hillary, Bill, McCain, and the RNC vs. Obama), he got smeared for 4 weeks (Rev. Wright, Flag pin, Bitter comments), Pennsylvania is the second oldest state in the union (Clinton's main voter), and yet despite all of it...Obama cut her lead by over 50%. Go ahead check every major newspaper, TV station, and blog...you won't see that as the headline.  There are just too many people with a vested interest in keeping this "race" going. And it will go on and on for no reason other than to smear and bloody a man who already has won.
P. Johns-Collins, NY says: Obama should easily win Indiana, but yet it's close. He really can't close the deal, can he? The man is unelectable.
_____________________________________________________

Really? I guess Hillary can't win either. She can't win Virginia, Missouri, Colorado, and the list goes on. How come she can't 'close the deal'?
ATTENTION MR CLYBURN - It is not just Black Americans that think the Clintons will do anything to destroy Obama so she can win in 2012, a lot of white independents do too.  At least ones not so caught up in the idea of a woman being president that they ignore all the issues that come with THIS woman.

Like not being able to run a campaign

Being broke and lying about it (15 mil vs 10 mil)

Being so condescending as to think she just deserves the white house and everyone else should just step aside.

Here's what I think:  MEAN PEOPLE SUCK.  But, mean people win.  How do you teach your kids that dichotomy? Win at all costs is now what I will teach my children and that's the example HRC is setting.  She will not have an iota of respect if this election is taken from Obama.  Somebody needs to wake up and shut her down NOW before a Democrat cannot even be elected in November!!
Obama will put Indiana in play for the Dems. Not so much with Hillary.  Vote Obama!
Yeah, I think what Wright still doesn't "get" is that the more he talks, the more people will seek to parse, truncate, overanalyze, read extra meaning into, his words.  He thinks he can "fix" this.  He can't.  There are too many people who want to continue to use his words to bring Obama down.

I should probably reserve comment until the whole interview airs (I like Moyers, high hopes that it will be a good interview)...but from the snipets I've seen so far it seems that the "politician" remark was heard with an eye/ear of the beholder, and that its pretty clear that Wright's views from the pulpit did NOT mix it up with Obama's politics.  The latter, just what many of us have thought for weeks now.

And I tend to agree with FR, probably a long-term gain for Obama but a short-term hit.  Sigh, what else is new...

Obama for our best future 08
Obama is great!  I like his message.
McCain is an old fart who should be thinking of retirement...after all, he's already collecting social security.
"...HRC will not be happy 'till she has a riot on her hands.  People have had ENOUGH of her crap."...
Laffincrow (Sent Friday, April 25, 2008 9:43 AM)

and THEN he says...

"...I cannot believe how racist some people are at this time in our history. LaffinCrow..." (Sent Friday, April 25, 2008 9:48 AM)

First you float the idea that people should engage in civil unrest if Obama doesn't get his way.....THEN you accuse EVERYONE ELSE of racism.
This is TYPICAL of the behavior of Obama and his supporters.
I for one, am sick to death of it!

It's hard to close the deal when your running against Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton and the media.
Obama will not bring about unity. He will cause racial division like we haven't seen since the sixties. It won't all be is fault even though he is a racist. The media will cause the division. They simply love to report controversy.
So what you're saying (re. the ad buys) is that don't expect Clinton to pay any bills with that...watch out small vendors in the next voting states (unless of course you're willing to make your services an inkind donation).  Too late for you UCDavis (a state-funded school so that means you taxpayers in CA are paying her expenses right now, at least until she pays up).
Rev. Wright  got it right when he said Obama is a politician.  (That is the only thing he got right!)  Obama has fooled everyone, especially the cable news channels, into thinking he is this noble gentleman, not a politician.  It looks as though he went to work in the trenches in Chicago because he calculated that that was the way to get on the political fast track in Illinois and then the US political scene.  And he looks like he got it "right".  That is also why he picked Rev. Wright's church - only he got that wrong!!  Let's finally recognize Obama for what he is - a politician.  Why else would he have taken help from Tony Rezko.  Also, he should give up the act of a "deprived multi racial child" with a single Mom who succeeded.  He had a privileged youth - private schools, etc.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE POINT OUT ONE RACIST STATEMENT THAT OBAMA'S EX-PASTOR MADE!

RACISTS ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO MAKE BLACK PEOPLE LOOK LIKE REVERSE RACISTS.

It's one of the new racists tactics that racists all over are using.
"He leads her in Iny-freaking-ana"!
