Obama on Wright

From NBC's Abby Livingston and NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
At his media avail in Indiana, NBC's Lee Cowan asked Obama about Rev. Wright's statement that the Illinois senator acted as a politician in giving his speech on Wright and race in Philadelphia back in March.

Here's Obama's response: "Well, look, I have commented extensively, most prominently in that speech in Pennsylvania on my profound disagreements with some of Rev. Wright's comments. And you know, I understand that he might not agree with me on my assessment of his comments. That's to be expected."

"So you know, he is obviously free to ... express his opinions on these issues. You know, I've expressed mine very clearly. I think that what he said in several instances were objectionable. And I understand why the American people took offense. And you know, as I indicated before, I took offense."

I will watch Bill Moyers tonight. Let's see who the racists really are in this country. I think I already know.

Hillary Clinton is banking on Barack Obama supporters voting for her in November. She will need us if she’s going to win. She may lose many of us as well as some African Americans, who feel they have been stabbed in the back by the Clintons. I don’t think she’s going to get the majority of independents voting for her in November. I don’t think there is a whole lot of support from the Republican Party who will vote for her.

She hasn’t expanded her base, despite what some in the media may be saying.

Speaking personally as one Obama supporter who would have voted for her in November, I have to say I have changed my mind.

Barack Obama, thank you for not bringing up Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky and a whole host of other negatives you could have used against her.

Let the Clinton campaign use whatever means it takes to try and bring you down. However, you are not George McGovern. We are facing entirely different circumstances than we were back then. This is just for starters:

# 1. George Bush
# 2. Dick Cheney
# 3. The complete selling out of the middle class
# 4. Greed
# 5. Iraq War
# 6. Treatment towards our veterans
# 7. The media & their willingness to promote their propaganda spin throughout Bush’s Administration
# 8. The housing crisis
# 9. The banking crisis
#10. Our education system or lack thereof
#11. Price of oil
#12. Price of college educations
# 13. Price of food

Again, I repeat - Hillary Clinton will be unable to depend on my vote in November. Never.
Jesus, you media types astound me. Let it die, already. So what if his pastor said angry things. Isn't it obvious that alot of people in this country have something to be angry about?!
We can disagree and not be disagreable!!!  What a leader!  This is a one time opportunity for America.  Barack can help heal the wounds and chasm that have been created by the past.
Please keep in mind that the full interview has not aired yet.  We've only, of course, seen the soundbites and clips that Moron Joe wants us to see with his whiny "Oh, My God, It Won't Go Away" knee-jerk reaction.

PBS thinks this is so important and such a pressing issue that they put it on a Friday night when the folks who could probably stand to actually watch the interview will be out at their favorite bar tying one on.
No one really cares what Wright said or did not say. He is not running for office. If you do not like his preaching and interpretation of scripture - don't read it. This country was founded on Separation of Church and State (Roger Williams Colony of Delaware)This is our heritage and our history, lets help Obama protect it. The worst question asked by a media person (Time Russert) was in one of the first debates when he asked the cadidates - What their favorite bible verse was - This was so unonstitutional, so unamerican - I was so embarrassed for my students who had to critique these poor pundits on Amer. Constituional Law!
Why did you go to that church for 20 years?
forget Wright. let's look at america's real needs. wright and obama are two independent people that are capable of making different views. Obama went out of his way to make the speech of the generation. Judge him by his words, NOT wright's.

United America!!!
The media should give it up and move on. The guy has expressed his feeling, yet, the media is still fanning the controversy.

The last time i checked McCain was fanning the Ayers controversy too. What a joke? Why is everybody afraid of Obama? Why can't the media stand someone with integrity? Why do they like someone with bunch of B.S like Clinton and McCain?

Enough said...
Dude, people look to deep into everything. Obama is a politician by definition, not by character. Reverend Wright was simply saying that his position required him to take things in a broader context. That is like me saying, Chuck Todd is a reporter, and everyone assuming I mean something negative b/c people have a negative opinion of reporters. That is ridiculous. Wright didn't say anything negative about Obama, he just said they are speaking to 2 different audiences.

Right, BO, you disagreed with his comments...but you just kept sitting there listening to the hate-filled, racist vitriole.  And, apparently, some of it rubbed off on you...typical white person.  Small town, midwestern, gun-toting, Christian, bigots.

You're such a fake and a fraud, BO.
This is old news.  Rev. Wright has a right to speak in his defense.  Barack has already addressed this issue.  For MSNBC to put a spin on this as a bad day for Obama is simply spin: Hillary spin. If MSNBC wants new news, check out the Paul V Clinton court case.  The Judge is assigning a trial date later today.
I am starting to think the Huffington Post blog is right.
Barack can help heal the wounds and chasm that have been created by the past
********
Mark in Milwaukee:  And how is going to do that when he's insulted 2/3 of the country?  Typical white person. Small town, midwestern, gun owning, Christian bigots.    With that your candidate pealed the scab off the wound!  He's a fake and a fraud.
If even the pastors of candidates are going to be vetted, surely it's time to press the issue for Hillary Clinton and John McCain.  Who are their pastors?  What things have those pastors said that will crimp the candidates' style?  The fact that the Clinton campaign cannot or will not defend Rev. Wright (and they have been in enough black churches to know, rustling up votes) does not speak well in their regard.
OMG.

I am so sick of this 'gotcha!' crap.  Until the MSM takes McCain to task for Hagee and Parsley, and HRC is asked about the Fellowship, then I'm not going to take any of this nonsense seriously.

BTW - I don't think BO should have to debate, but for those who do - how about a town hall meeting?  No teleprompters and the voters can ask what THEY want to know.  Oh, that's right - then HRC could not get a script a head of time so that she could make sure the media is complicit in her quest to ruin Obama.
This is not old news to the 9 states left that have to vote.  His judgement with all of his associates are in question.  His wife is finally proud of her country.  Thank god us democrats still have a choice.
The AUDACITY of some unknown, uppity black guy sneaking up from behind and stealing the prize from the Clintons, when it was their turn - again!!

The Clintons are so jealous, and angry, they don't care who they use, or destroy - even Chelsea.   They would have slimed MLK, JFK, or Bobby Kennedy, if it served their purpose.

The one thing that infuriates them is that they see a potentially great man, who could overshadow the Clinton legacy.  They know they can't compete against ethics, integrity, and the genuine leadership qualities that can unify, rather than dividing.

Also, when we elect a woman president, wouldn't it be in our best interest to elect one of quality?   Electing a corrupt one, can only hurt the future of women in politics.

Our country is in serious trouble.  This election CAN'T be about gender, or race.  We have to elect someone with integrity, good judgement, and a genuine gift of uniting us all to save our great nation - before it's too late.
This is just like when the media kept asking him about President Carter's trip after he had already stated his opinion on it.  Please stop beating this dead horse.  The media in this country is a joke.  It stopped being about news and started being about ratings.
Oh, those poor bitter Obama supporters – still smarting from their double digit loss on Tuesday in PA!

Maybe they should blame their candidate Sen. Obama and his Reverend, or his weaker than weak debate performance, or his inability (ONCE AGAIN) to close the deal in a critical swing state, despite out spending Hillary by 3 to 1.

But instead they take their frustrations out on Hillary?

No, he can’t …………..

Can’t win CA

Can’t win OH

Can’t win TX

Can’t win PA

Can’t win FL

Etc, etc.
For God`s sake....All these are distractions from the real issues....I do not think every member of this church have to be taken responsible for what thier Pastor said...Then everybody will be involved !
Religion is a crock and shouldn't be a part of the political forum anyway.  Baptists think everyone else is going to hell, Mormons, well what can you say, Muslims want to kill everyone, Catholics eat their young.  Most people I know sleep in church anyway.
I took what Rev. Wright to say as --He does his job and I do my job.  I think what he said is being taken out of context again.  Do I really have a much higher IQ than most folks?  Lawrence on "Verdict" is the only one to get it right!
The point is as Rev. Wright said, "He is a POLITICIAN, I'm a Pastor"...the whole premise that Senator Obama ran on is that he's not a politician!

That said, Rev. Wright when on to say that Obama as a politician has to say what he has to say and that Rev. Wright as a pastor, has to say what he has to say.

So lets put it to rest...Senator Obama is a politician...just like others politicians!  His whole campaign was run on the idea that he wasn't a politician...where does that leave him?

I'll take a politician, who says they're a politician, anyday, over someone trying so hard to prove they aren't when they are...which one is more disingenous?  Which one do you trust?
He went to that church and listened for 20 years because it worked.Isn't he running for president.?Such an easy answer quit spinning.Where is Michelee NC or Indiana? Is she out there scolding and letting everybody know how angry she is?
For 20 years you listened to what he said. You kept going back that leads me to believe you feel the same way he does. So Mr. Obama I feel like you are racist toward me and you feel like I am to blame for who knows what because I am white and I have always been proud of my country. I am a female, white, 50 years old and one of the working poor. Hillary or no one.
Another day, another manufactured controversy...even old granny McCain is joining in and saying Obama should apologize for something he did not do.  McCain want Obama to apologize for Ayers' act.

Does this old grand pa know what he talking about? How can he apologize for someone else crime? The old grand pa is not bright to be the President. I think McSame better retire from his senate sit.

This country is becoming something else.
Let's lighten the mood with a political joke.

What's the difference between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton?

Give up?

Barack Obama is not the defendant in a major campaign finance fraud trial in California.

Get it?

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Just ask their creditors.
What DO YOU PEOPLE IN THE MEDIA HAVE A HARD TIME COMPREHENDING?
PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THIS>>>WE ARE SICK OF YOUR SPINNING
WE ARE SICK OF YOUR TRYING TO SWIFTBOAT OBAMA....
We WENT THROUGH THIS 3 WEEKS AGO.......YOU OBVIOUSLY FORGOT THE MESSAGE YOU WERE SENT BY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE
DO YOU THINK IF YOU JUST REPEAT SOMETHING ENOUGH YOU WILL MAKE IT TRUE?
PEOPLE ARE WISE TO YOU AND YOUR METHODS>>>
WE SAW IT WITH THE DEAN SCREAM
WE SAW IT WITH THE SWIFTBOAT ADS WITH JOHN KERRY
WE WATCHED YOU LIE THROUGH YOUR TEETH IN THE LEAD UP TO THE WAR IN IRAQ
I was just thinking, on my way to work, as I passed by the forest of tall pines and aspens, that I am very lucky to live in America.  Then, I saw several deer of to the left side of the road; a little further down the road,  I saw a small group of wild turkeys, which are rarely seen in my neck of the woods.  Finally, I made it to the busy highway, took a left and proceeded past the wondrous snow capped mountains on my right.  As I made my way down the mountain to where I work, I noticed that gas costs had gone up another twenty cents in one day.  I work hard every day, and now I might have to move to the city down below just because of the cost of gas.

Then I thought of the fallen soldiers and their families, and I am ashamed of my petty worries.  How many of us are still mourning the fallen of the Iraq war? Before I left the house, I noticed Obama’s pastor, Rev. Wright was speaking on T.V., and the pundits were already picking apart what he said-- like vultures. He was a marine, after all.  How many pundits have given as much to our country as Rev. Wright?  Not many: unless they to served in the military.  Now, some might argue that they served our country in a different ways, but those of  us who have served in the military know that there is no other job that requires one to sacrifice as much as one does in the military.  Yet, he is a pastor who still tries to do good deeds.  How many of us can say that!  Not too many would be my guess.

Furthermore, most people have not felt the sting of prejudice, or the constant injustice of being falsely accused because of the color of ones skin, or the constant fear that accompanies such experience.  Until, you have walked in ones shoes, do not throw stones.  Perhaps it is better, far better, not to prejudge others by the color of their skin.  Perhaps it is better, far better, to try to understand the full context of ones life, deeds, and actions before condemning him, based on only a few ill-gotten comments.  Perhaps it is better, far better, to believe in the positive power of our ability to do good deeds, than to sit by and make snide comments out of “bitter” frustration, or simple political convenience. Perhaps it is better, far better, that our politicians think in the commonality of progressing our countries interests without finding continual blame, but instead, in finding continual solutions.  I believe this is Obama’s message, and a powerful message it is.
whats the beef with Wright anyway? I have seen christian services that would make most good American cringe with the racism, sexism and scientific ignorance displayed...but they all wave a little american flag and have a faded yellow support the troops bumper sticker and that makes it alright...
The media is so bass-ackwards on their reporting

Why aren't they creating a big hulabuloo about John McCain who:

A). Personally Solicited the endorsement of Pastor John Hagee who has said such dandies as:
-The Catholic Church is the "Great Whore"
-Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans because they scheduled a Gay Pride parade and God didn't like that
-Wants war in Israel to speed up Armageddon

McCain actively went out and wanted to get this guy's endorsement, but yet they smell blood in the water when a black preacher is shouting into the microphone so they can scare the average American citizen.

Something is wrong with you mainstream media, very wrong.  Has Rev. Wright ever gotten giddy over the thought of war in Israel? No, but the man that can be dubbed as McCain's spiritual advisor IS and they completely leave it to gather dust on the shelf.

REPORT FAIRLY
Sen Obama is a politician and will only tell us what he thinks we want to hear. According to his pastor, he'll say anything to win.
It is painfully obvious as to why Obama is in the hot
seat about Rev. Wright right now. The Rebub's are
trying to get their mitts on HRC.

The DNC is now divided and they have the Clinton's
to blame for it.

What are the SD's going to say if the Peter Paul vs.
Clinton trial is not postponned (again) today.

Obama '08
Guilt by association?

I love this whole Rev story because it shows how the people in charge of setting the agenda in the news organizations think in terms of what stories people want to hear about. Do you realize this Rev interview was the main lead story on all of the FOX news shows last night. It is also a major story for all the cable news shows today. The funny thing about all this is how no one who is concerned about Obama listening to his pastor for 20 years have yet to show one "sound bite" that shows Obama actualy share some of these views. We need to take a step back and realize that Obama is not a racist. How could you hate your other half. I would like anybody to try and visualize how difficult it would be to grow up biracial. People have a tough time finding out who they are just when they are one race, how about the people who are made up of different ones. The saddest thing about this election cycle is that in the end, the American people lose becuase we have to talk about this garbage instead of try and solve the real issues of this world.
Blame Hillary and cry and whine all day.  Man thank go we are getting to know this Obama character.  He can never win in November.  He will never win the working class reagan dems.  Go Hillary!!!!  She is are best and only chance
Wouldn't take much to convince me that DEMOCRATS (the party of Slavery, Jim Crow, and Segregation) ran drugs into urban neighborhoods. Pretty obvious they value the Teacher's Union above education of poor kids.
AMEN>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What the heck does the media and white racial america want?? Should he draw and quarter the guy???

What does Obama need to do????
Be-head him???
I mean really. This is getting to be shameful
The Media has become a joke
Obama could explain a thousand times in a thousand ways his positions reagrding Wright's comments and the media along with Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough would still say he hasn't answered the questions.

I think it is time the media (CHRIS MATTHEWS and JOE SCARBORUGH) continue asking Hillary why she lied about the sniper FIRE and bombs dropping during her visit to the Bosnia airport. Fair is fair. Let's see some more of the Bosnia airport footage with the little girl handing Hillary a bouquet of flowers. In fact, let's see you play it on your show every day and evening Chris and Joe.

You guys might also want to add up the number of times you have seen Hillary wearing a American Flag lapel pin and report on that as well, EVERY DAY.
Wright??...no...Wrong!!!!  He went to a church that said bad things (by a decorated marine combat veteran)...He didn't wear a flag pin....but...the very most important thing....He didn't lie!  Why would any "true" "moral" American vote for Hillary? Only because of fear and ignorance ... Sorry, Hillary supporters...but that's the truth.
NOBAMA, 2/3 of the country live in California, NY, NY, CT., FL., TX, & NC. They DO NOT qualify as small-town. Give-up already, your candidate Hillary or McCain will not win.

Wright and Obama should start playing the patriotism card.  Everyone Wright is brought up (or when Wright himself is challenged in an interview), he should say that he served his country as a MARINE.  The GOP cloaks itself in the flag all the time.  Learn some lessons Obama.
Hey Mark - note to your site and to your network.  NO ONE I know is talking about this anymore.  We're over it.  We were all discussing it a few weeks ago, but now we're onto other things.  NO ONE CARES ANYMORE!  Stop flogging a dead horse.
I looked pretty closely at Rev. Wright. Checked out his bio & Church. Read a number of articles written before the looping snippets. Read and watched some of his sermons - including the ones with the out of context. I couldn’t conclude that he was a racist or Anti American.

The only comment that threw me was his comment on HIV being caused by the government. Then when I heard it came from years ago, it made a little more sense on how Rev. Wright could have got it wrong. As many know, the US government experimented with 400 blacks who had syphilis and they didn’t give them treatment to study what would happen. That is a fact. Out of that came conspiracy theories on HIV and crack cocaine (SJ Mercury News)
http://www.usdoj.gov/oig/special/9712/ch01p1.htm
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2005/jan/26/aids.usa

When the Dept of Justice is looking into allegations made by a series of articles written by the San Jose Mercury News, the “crack cocaine” story had some legs and provided grounds for suspicion at the time – regardless of how it turned out. That suspicion carried over to HIV and there are still a number of conspiracy sites that make a somewhat compelling case with support from MDs unless you look into it deeply.

In my opinion, Rev. Wright isn’t a bad pastor or what he’s being made out to be. In fact, one of his sermons was so good, I had my kids watch it.
Sounds like Rev. Wright threw Obama under the bus, even though Barack stood up for him.

Christians, and so-called patriots attacked Obama falsely for being a Muslim. When that did not work, Christians, and so-called patriots attacked him, and his Christian church, which he defended risking his candidacy. Now this Christian minister, hangs him out to dry, and leaves him twisting in the wind.

Is it any wonder Christianity is struggling with few new converts, and Islam has been on the rise since the turn of the century? White folks, and black folks, with their false image of a white Jesus, certainly do have chickens that have come home to roost.
Is this really going to make our country safe?  Will this bring jobs back?  Will this end the recession?  Will this end the war?  The sooner we move on the better the world will be.  Rev Wright has his views, Obama has his views, and everyone else have their views. The only people that are making a major issue of Rev Wright are racists or people seeking a political gain.  Nothing else.  Now can we move forward.  Thank you America!
csh, IL (Sent Friday, April 25, 2008 1:04 PM)

Primaries are DIFFERENT from General Elections!  To use BO not winning the primary in those states as the reason he wouldn't win them in the GE is ludicrious.

NObama - With such hatred in your heart and spewing out of you, I'm surprised you see straight enough to type.  Newsflash - No one is taking you or your antiquated views seriously.  You, Patty, HP, and csh are turning into a joke.  Curb yourselves.  We get it - you hate Obama.  It's doesn't mean anyone else has to.
Why did the MSM feel the need to be out in front of the Moyers interview?  Seems unethical to have commentary on an interview the public hasn't seen.  Almost seems like the MSM might be trying to influence public opinion on the issue.  I hope most people tune in and make up their own minds.  Its funny how some people feel so threatened by the Rev. and attach that to Obama.  I think a guy who has served his country, put his own life at risk for the sake of the country, and who lived through segregation, has earned the right to be critical of this country's policies.  Most of the people that heard those snippets want to be able to justify their own racism by calling the Rev a racist or black militant.  This country is so backwards that most people want to pat themselves on their backs for how far we've come while turning a blind eye to things like Katrina, Jena, and Sean Bell.  Some places still fly the Confederate Flag!!! America is in a sad sad state.
