McCain blasts Obama on Hamas

Posted: Friday, April 25, 2008 4:38 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
In recent days, McCain has taken some critical -- and, some might argue, personal -- shots at Obama. On Sunday, McCain questioned the tenuous association Obama has with the former '60s radical William Ayers. Yesterday, he delivered a jab at Obama's association with Jeremiah Wright. (Responding to questions about the endorsement he received from the controversial pastor John Hagee, the Arizona senator said, "I didn't attend Pastor Hagee's church for 20 years.")

And today, on a call with conservative bloggers, McCain said this: "I think it's very clear who Hamas wants to be the next president of the United States. So apparently has Danny Ortega and several others. I think that people should understand that I will be Hamas's worst nightmare... If Senator Obama is favored by Hamas I think people can make judgments accordingly."

McCain was referring to a the favorable comment a Hamas adviser recently made of Obama. But Obama has criticized the terrorist group and has said he would not meet with them.

Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan responded to McCain's comment on Obama and Hamas. "We want to take Senator McCain at his word that he wants to run a respectful campaign, but [it] is becoming increasingly difficult when he continually tries to use the politics of association and makes claims he knows not to be true to advance his campaign. This type of politics of division and distraction, not only lead to a campaign not worthy of the American people, but also has failed to help our families for too long."

Sevugan also points to this Obama camp statement that was made after the Hamas adviser made his remarks -- a statement the McCain campaign should have known of. "Senator Obama has repeatedly rejected and denounced the actions of Hamas, a terrorist organization responsible for the deaths of many innocents, that is dedicated to Israel's destruction.  As president, Obama will work with Israel to isolate terrorist groups like Hamas, target their resources, and support Israel's right and capability to defend itself from any attack."

*** UPDATE *** McCain spokesman Brian Rogers defends McCain's statement earlier today with this statement. “This is a legitimate issue for the American people to think about. The reason for Hamas’ praise of Senator Obama’s foreign policy is his commitment to meet unconditionally with Iran -- a nation whose president denies the Holocaust, threatens to wipe Israel off the map, funds terrorists and sends weapons to Iraq to kill American soldiers. Senator Obama’s positions present a radical departure from the longstanding bipartisan consensus for isolating rogue regimes like Iran and North Korea.

“It is not only responsible to raise these critical issues in this election, but it would be the height of irresponsibility not to have this discussion with the American people.”

To Senator John McWar...

It's the Economy, Stupid.

Power to the People, and have a nice day!  :)
Yeah right ! No peace in the Middle East !

McCain and Billary will make sure that we bring the nuclear holocaust to Iran !

Somebody please 'Old man yelling at cloud' that Hamas is actually not voting in the US, nor are they endorsing anyone (they are democratically elected though).
John McCain will only be our 2nd worst nightmare, our worst nightmare is in the Whitehouse  till the end of the year.
...you will be Hamas' worst nightmare?  Arent't you rattling that sabre a bit prematurely?
Obama is a nighmare waiting to happen.

I can't believe this person is running for president of the USA.
idiots are falling into the trap too just like Clinton's.........This is the one thing Sen McCain is running on, the kind of campaign he is running to try to attract non republicians and this just shows he's a FAKE.......Man the Obama camp is GOOD!!!!!
Why would you believe McCain to keep this race above the belt line? HE CAN'T, not if he wants to win. Hillary has been John's best defense thus far. He hasn't had to swing on Obama because she's trying to kitchen sink him.

The problem is now in the later rounds Hillary is losing steam. Her jabs don't have the mustard needed. So now it's Big Bad John's turn.

I'm not going to slam Chuck, MSNBC or anyone else. I would just like to ask any Clinton supporters if any of this bothers them, really. I'm not looking for insults, zingers, one liners or gotchas. Please an intelligent reply is a great way to start the weekend.
It is widely known the GOP will not be able to conduct a respectful election on the issues that are affecting Americans and must resort to politics of division.
As expected, there's little difference between Sen. McCain and Sen. Clinton. So the McCain camp's suggestion is a very good one: "let the American people judge accordingly".
Oh no! McCain just resorted to the "I'll kill more Terrorists" talking point. That's straight from Bush's mouth. I've always liked McCain except for his mideast policies, which are a nightmare!
More "honorable campaigning" from the "straight talk express". Easy to take potshots when no one is firing back. Mighty funny that McCain has so much courage now, when no one can directly attack him. Sort of like what the Viet Nam Vets said about him:
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/index.htm
Now, I can't say whether the Vets have reasonable points, but it makes you wonder about him.
Add that up with the continuing gutter attacks from him, pandering to a right wing evangelical nut job racist, being "intimate" with lobbyists, not understanding the economy (his words), not knowing the difference between Sunni and Shi'ites, bombing Iran, and no health care plan, you have to ask the question whether he is actually qualified for the office of POTUS.
I KNOW America prefers Obama over the neo con war monger, racial evangelical pandering, lobbyist seducing, economy destroying McCain.
What was the Keating 5?  Why did McCain SEEK Hagee's endorsement?  What happened with that Boeing deal that went to France?  Isn't that lobbyist for that French company running McCain's campaign.

"I think that people should understand that I will be Hamas's worst nightmare..."
-- A little itchy to go to war there Johnny boy?
Obama would be foolish if he is so naive enough to think that radical muslim extremist (those whose goal is to make everyone a muslim or death) will shake hands with him and offer peace.
There must be a reason why they like him. Perhaps because he has muslim origins. But still, there is no way they would make peace with people who do not believe in their ideology. Don't be fooled.

I still think he's unelectable anyway. This is merely a preview of the kind of treatment he will get against the Republican's. He needs Hilary to toughen him up.
Perhaps Hamas likes Obama because there may be a hope of progress towards a just peace...

I believe McCain when he says he will be Hamas's worst nightmare ...it's that "red neck, kick their A$$" attitude that has helped so much in the past.

Time to try somthing different

John McCain: Mr. Nice Guy who carries a Tonya Harding
bat instead of a walker.

Obama '08
Senator McCain--haven't we all had enough nightmares in the last 7 years?  Why can't we talk to Hamas and try to broker peace in the region before we commit to becoming their worst nightmare?  I stand firmly for Israel--that doesn't mean they're not doing some things we shouldn't be encouraging.  It would be good for Israel to co-exist peacefully with the Palestineans.  Could we just give peace a chance before we pull a "Bush"
I think this Grumpy Old Man - GOM is going crazy.  He is now jumping into the fray of using tenuous associations and statements of groups that the Obama Campaign has denounced to mischaraterize Obama.

This GOM is going down.
Obama is a nighmare waiting to happen.

I can't believe this person is running for president of the USA.
McCain,  just don`t know   anything does he..........
The economy......McCain knows nothing about that.
Just WAR ,WAR, WAR. Is that ball he`s good for?

Dang man , stop listening to what you think you heard and just listen to what is really being said.

This man will finish us all...........Dang!!!
Ah come on Hamas does "charity work" just like Imus. Always like how the left "justifies" someone because of some sort of charity work they do, and how it is ignored when say someone like Cheney donates to charity. The rot of  moral relativism
Gee, I'm scared.  Senator McCain will you please bankrupt the country for the hell of it, while enriching your buddies, in order to protect me?

Cut it out, McGrampa.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/25/mccain-on-obama-clear-who_n_98614.html

So much for a decent and honest campaign - someone who does not want to continue warring with the Middle East - oh, the horror!
The Obama-nuts think after the US leaves the middle east, there will be peace. How naive they are.
It is really sad that John McCain, who was once highly regarded by all Americans, has turned into his own worst nightmare. His principle's gone, his talents dimmed, his hinges rather creaky, he takes pot-shot after pot-shot, but nobody hears him. Where is the honor that once was his? The road to the White House has stolen it. Soon poor McCain will be no better than the Republican attack machine that has led our country in war with Iraq, the worst economy since the Great Depression, and soiled our reputation in the community of nations. So very sad...
This is really funny coming from a guy who's been pushing for a respectful presidential campaign. He criticizes Linda Daves for trying to run the Jeremiah Wright on Obama, but we all know that it's so he can turn around and use it against Obama in the fall.

So let's get this straight. It's disrespectful for CLinton and GOP to take cheap shots at Obama, but McCain gets a free pass because.......

Puhleeze. What a hypocrite.
McCain.... you'd be america's worst nightmare.  Looking like Fire marshall Bill!!
John McCain needs to first explain his spiritual advisors position. Yes he did not have Mr. Hagees as his pastor for 20 years he just utilized him as his spiritual advisor for the campaign.( pandering) Mr. Hagee this week claimed again New Orlean's was punished by God.  John McCain in New Orlean's this week did nothing to discredit Mr. Hagee's comments.  Under the standards applied to Obama this means he agrees wiht them.  Mr. Hagee is no Christian.  He is an old testament preacher.  But Jesus Christ spoke of forgiveness and kindness and died to wash away the original sin fo man.  Mr. Hagee stands soley for punishment.  He is closer to the Pharisees than Jesus Christ. John McCain discredit Mr. Hagee.  Make an uplifintg speech agaisnt wedge politics then and only then can you make your claims about Obama.
Dear Senator McCain

The idea of creating fear and then taking political advantage of it, is dead. Bush has done this for 8 years now and the average American is wise to it.
McCain is so senile, he would not know the difference between Hamas, al-Queda, muslim extremists, or just a group of pissed off Americans! This man is a war veteran, like myself, but he is NOT healthy enough mentally or physically to tackle a Presidency. Come on people! Wake up! He needs to retire and take care of himself and his family.
WAR WAR WAR WAR that all he knows, but then forgets the poor soldiers when they come home.  McCain was a true patriot years and years and years and years ago but now just wants to flex the American muscle.  Gee sounds like Bush politics.

Bob, Chicago
Well, let's all just think about this for a moment shall we?

John McCains 100 years (or more) of WAR and the promise to continue GWB economic policies.

OR

Hamas which is in NO WAY connected to Obama, and, which  Obama has denounced and rejected.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.........

TOUGH CHOICE!!!

Don;t know if the American people can figure that one out, but I;m guessing that since 80% of AMerica is sick of the war, and think GWB is a complete failure that this is a silly question.

John "100 Years" McCain and his GOP posse is SOL.

Obama 08
This is for Dave

Charity work and Cheney?  You mean his relationship with Haliburton?
Just had a taste of MSNBC's Morning Shmo. Good job bud. I love the new format rub a dub dub three soft speaking republicans in a tub. I used to think Andrea Mitchell was alright. Now I'll yawn and change the channel when I see her. "You kid because you love???" I know you gotta be kidding me the way you spew about the working class white vote disliking Obama. A lightly veiled try at growing your agenda of racisim in the country, and you're all too happy to do it. You make me want to puke!
T- [It is widely known the GOP will not be able to conduct a respectful election on the issues that are affecting Americans and must resort to politics of division.]

Agreed. Just like the campaigns of Clinton and Obama are focusing entirely on the issues and keeping everything respectible.

Homework assignment: How is making the statements about Typical White People and explaining why people are bitter unifying the country?
So, basically, McCain thinks that Americans should consider Hamaas' opinion when voting this fall. How UNPATRIOTIC is That??!!
McCain is this ALL you got?
I guess Obama could have a serious discussion with the terrorists, as they're marching through the Washington Mall and burning everything in sight. He could tell them to have hope.
Darn but if Hillary and McCain shouldn't be on the same ticket. They like each other, think they are both qualified, and sure as hell seem like they want to start WW3. She is going to nuke Iran and McCain is losing his marbles.

Whatever happened to diplomacy and negotiation. You can always get tough if you have to.

McCain also obviously wants to compete against Hillary in the general. Why is that? Maybe there are some associations tied to Hillary with funding for terrorists from her time in the WH with Bill? We shall see.
" I think that people should understand that I will be Hamas's worst nightmare... "

-John McCain

It is this kind of chest pounding, arrogance, and unfair foriegn policy that brought on the attacks of 9/11.

America deals in death, then cries foul when others hit back.

McCain is selling wolf tickets, just like Saddam did before the Gulf war. Once he, and his forced were engaged, his army did'nt even have army boots. They were fighting in leather street shoes, and without shoe strings or socks. Our army is'nt quite that poorly outfitted, but it is still greatly lacking in resources. Lastly, our boys, and girls over there are, simply put, worn out.

Its obvious McCain has resorted to this because for the those that dont do their homework it has work to scare off Obama's votes.  Afterall, has it not worked for Clinton.  They both (Clinton/McCain) hope if they repeat it enough he will lose in IN and NC making it easier to Clinton to possibly be the nominee.

OBAMA 08
Hamas is misundstood. They're really quite nice.
McCain Presidential To Do list
Bomb Iraq, kill & maim 1000s of innocents
  Salute the Flag
Bomb Afghanistan, kill & maim 1000s of innocents
  Pray to God
A-bomb Iran, kill & main millions of innocents
Get a Support the Troops bumber sticker
Send thousands of American soldiers to die in vain

Clinton Presidential To Do list
  Out-do McCain
Yeah, peace in the Middle East - err that would be terrible - can't have that now can we - better elect McCain to ensure the entire Middle East remains completely unstable and ensures that hundreds of thousands of more innocent people die. Can't have ANY diplomacy whatsoever - you mean TALK to foreign nations in a peace effort? What was Carter thinking? It is far better to keep the entire world at unease, make sure we remain on the holy land that sparked the attacks on 9/11 to begin with and ensures that we keep Al Qaeda recruitment levels at record highs - better get McCain in office - he is our only hope to remain in a state of perpetual fear and war.
John McCain has one of either two problems at present. Either his Republican Party has no respect for the kind of campaign he wants to run in observations of the NC GOP ressurecting Rev Wright OR he is playing a game with the American people just like Bush, says one thing completely means another.
This little tag team match McCain and Clinton have conducted against Obama has not gone unnoticed - Americans are watching - more closely than you realize.

Enough already.

Not this time America - we are not going to win in November by playing games - we are going to win in November by ENDING the game playing.

Obama 08
Hamas runs the Meals on Wheels program in Syria.
DRK

Instead of attacking Obama, try saying something positive about your candidate.  Oh, wait...You can't.

It's time for Senator Obama to take off the gloves, he tried for a kinder more honest campaign but that is not how American's want their politics. We are more interested in past and present scandals, and as you have seen with Rev. Wright if we can't find any we will make one up.  So Senator, come out fighting. Hillary has enough scandal to last from now right through the convention.  Let's start with 'Clinton vs Paul' if this was you accused of a Federal crime the media would be having a field day.
It is no fair targetting associates... said an associate of Obama. I would have more respect for Obama and be more likely as an Independent voter to vote for him if he actually said these things himself instead of always sending out the associates he doesn't want to be judged by to do the talking for him.
The more world leaders speak up, the more we know many of them respect Barack Obama. Some may be pro American and some may be anti American but the fact that they respect Barack Obama is a step in the right direction. Our country has lost much respect and credibility around the world under this GOP administration. We have had enough hollow threats and saber rattling. We need effective, clear dialogue followed by effective, well planned action when and where it is merited.
Give me a break!!!!
Does anyone else sense that Senator Clinton is really campaigning to be Senator McCain's running mate? Forget 2012 for her; if McCain were to win and were to decide to serve for only one term; she'd be the VP and the Republican nominee in 2012.
