Hillary calls for Lincoln-Douglas debates

Posted: Sunday, April 27, 2008 11:26 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli and Athena Jones
SOUTH BEND, IN -- Clinton yesterday threw a curveball in her latest pitch to get Obama to debate her before the May 6 primary here, calling for a Lincoln-Douglas style meeting that would have the two go head-to-head without a moderator.

Standing on a platform above home plate at South Bend’s minor league ballpark, Clinton noted that Obama partisans “complained a little bit about the tough questions” during the April 16 debate in Philadelphia, and also “complained about the moderators.” She also alleged that the Obama camp had “turned down every debate that has been offered.”

“I’m offering Sen. Obama a chance to debate me one-on-one, no moderators,” she said. “Just the two of us, going for 90 minutes, asking an answering questions.”

She said such a meeting would be a throwback to the debates of Lincoln and Douglas in neighboring Illinois 150 years ago, when the two met seven times. She also said Indiana deserved such a forum, having “wandered in the wilderness of American politics for 40 years,” the last time the state mattered in presidential primary politics. “Who knows we might even carry Indiana in the fall if we start with a good debate right here,” she added.

“We’ve had four debates between Sen. Obama and myself -- that’s all we’ve had since this whole campaign has gone on,” she said. “I think that would be good for the Democratic Party, it would be great for democracy, and it would be great for Indiana.”

Just before Clinton made that challenge, however, Obama told Fox News Sunday that he would not take part in any further debates before two-state showdown in North Carolina and Indiana on May 6.

In addition, Obama chief strategist David Axelrod gave NBC/NJ this response to Clinton's challenge. "I think if Lincoln-Douglas had debated 21 times, I don't think there would be much appetite for another Lincoln-Douglas debate."

Clinton was joined on the resplendent afternoon yesterday by Sen. Evan Bayh and former Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan, who handed her a South Bend Silver Hawks jersey and a baseball bat manufactured in nearby Valparaiso. Clinton, brandishing the bat in her left hand, later labored to work some baseball lingo into her opening remarks.

“We’re gonna hit some of those balls out of this stadium and out of our country stadium because we’re gonna go to bat and fix America together,” she said. “We’re gonna go fight for America, we’re gonna round the bases, we’re gonna score a lot of runs, and we’re gonna feel really good about the home team, namely the American team -- the team we’re all a part of.”

The implicit reason Obama doesn't want a Lincoln style debate with Clinton is because he did so poorly in the last debate.  He is basically a very cautious politician.  Is this why he voted for the Energy Bill that the oil industry pushed last fall ... the one that lines the pockets of the oil industry with billions more in profits?  This is not the kind of change we Democrats want to bring to Washington (Obama's big campaign theme.)  Sen. Hillary Clinton voted against the Bush/Oil industry Energy Bill.  Clinton has the guts to stand up to the oil industry.
That's why I am supporting Clinton for President!
Obama cannot debate - his campaign will not allow it.
He can deliver a well prepared speech from the teleprompter - but - cannot answer general questions.
I think he proved himself at the last debate.  He says he wants to sit down to "talk" to terroist nations - how can he when he can't even talk/debate American issues with Hillary!
Hillary kind of looks like Steven Douglas, doesn't she? He wore pants-suits all the time also.

Obama's intellect and inspired temperment resembles Lincoln.
SHE wants to control everything, plus it's a way to get free air time.
What makes Hillary more qualified than these ladies?

What makes her more qualified than Barbara Boxers or Maxine Waters?
What makes her more qualified than Amy Klobuchar  or Claire McCaskill
What makes her more qualified than Susan Collins   or Olympia Jean Snowe
What makes her more qualified than Dianne Feinstein or Kay Bailey Hutchison?

Why because here husband cheated on her, the republican attacked her and America felt sorry for her.
What you actually are going to do clinton - is endorse Senator Obama as the fairly and rightly nominated candidate of the democratic party.  Then you can go back to your Senate seat and do the work that Tim Russert says you haven't done yet.
of course he wont debate if its not a guaranteed cake walk with only his fans. everytime he gets a tough question he consistently shows how weak he is and how he cant look and sound  strong under pressure.honestly the less he says the better he looks.thats not the candidate we strong women need.
97% of black men voted for Obama in Pennsylvania.
93% of black women.

Is that the Obama “hope” message or are black people voting based on skin color?

Come on why not address the obvious?

Obama can hide and run from debate.  But he can't hide and run when he may be called for in crisis when he needs to make a call to launch a missile or not.  I don't get what his supporters seen in this guy.  He doesn't even talk that sweet either, after hearing him a few times, it becomes sounding mechanical and really boring because he offers no substance other than the empty change rhetoric.  His performance in the campaign proves he practices the same old politics like all politician do.
Obama didn't complain about tough questions.  He was complaining about their silliness, and lack of relevancy to anything that matters to voters.  All she wants is a chance to distort minute issues about people he knows, or his misinterpreted words. With all the ammunition he could use against her, he has shown remarkable restraint, and class.
"We’re gonna hit some of those balls out of this stadium and out of our country stadium because we’re gonna go to bat and fix America together,” she said. “We’re gonna go fight for America, we’re gonna round the bases, we’re gonna score a lot of runs, and we’re gonna feel really good about the home team, namely the American team -- the team we’re all a part of."

Sweet Jesus that's bad.  She claims to offer solutions instead of speeches, and it sure shows here.  Those baseball analogies make me want to hurl.

Somebody find her a speechwriter for those millions she's raised, OK?
The difference is that Douglas and Lincoln were from opposing political parties.

If Senator Obama agrees to such a debate with no moderators it's a chance for Senator Clinton to play the ultimate victim.

"Look, the big nasty man is being mean to me!"
Why would Obama debate Hillary again.  He would just give voters another look at how poorly he stands against her.  And add voters to her camp.
He can't stand up to her and won't be able to stand up to McCain, and certainly doesn't look like a leader who can with the other powers of the world much less up against the threats to world freedom.
She's just wants to win - at any cost.  She doesn't care who it destroys - Bill, Chelsea, Obama, whom she knows is a decent man, the Democratic Party, or even our country.  She can also thank Rush Limbaugh for her inflated vote totals.
We all know, because we have witnessed it, that Obama cannot directly formulate a response to debate questions unless the question is put to Hillary first.  I would guess that without Hillary posing the question instead of responding first, that Obama would be hard pressed to give a knockout response.  Hillary, on the other hand, is always ready with a concise and knowledgeable answer.  Obama needs a teleprompter to collect his thoughts and formulate his responses.  He does not sound like a great orator when he is not in front of one.
Does Clinton want a real debate or a stage to revisit old diggs and give more approval to negative fighting?

NO MORE DEBATES, LET THE CANIDATES MEET THE VOTERS ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL.  WE WANT TO SEE AND MEET THE PEOPLE OURSELVES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

COME ON FELLOW CITIZENS IT IS UP TO US.
There have been a lot of debates but most of those were with several candidates.  I feel that debates are good and I enjoy them.  Hillary prevails and Obama isn't good at it.  He is good at prepared speeches with 2 teleprompters but one-on-one he is not so good.

I say let the debates begin.
Coward. Obama? Yeah, Obama.

Too bad.
Those who are behind always seek debates.  This has been the truth for 100's of years.  There have been 21 debates and I don't need another.

Let the candidates talk to the voters and tell the voters what their vision is for the future of America.
This is what is necessary now.
I think Bill And Hillary should debate since she says she doesn't agree with some of the things he got passed.
Comlained about "tough questions"?????? Only if you have an issue with stupidity in terms of flag pins, whether someone you met once or twice was on a crime spree when you were busy playing with your Hot Wheels, or if you could crawl into the mind of your preacher to determine if he still loves America after serving in the US Marine Corp......by the way, the baseball vernacular is some of the most pathetic prose to come out of her mouth yet.....Obama is dealing some wicked pitches down the middle, and Hillary the Big Wiffer is coming up with Jack Jackity Jack
And I suppose Hillary sees herself as Lincoln. It's obvious she isn't too silver-tongued in the baseball cum politics arena.
Blech to HRC.
Out of her mind!!!!  The only thing an umpire would tell you, Sen. Clinton, is, "you're out!!!"
Obama is a sissy! He is scared to debate Hillary one on one. What a loser!
Presumptive nominees prerogative. Sorry Senator Douglas..er Clinton.
Hillary doesn't know the meaning of words like ethics, morality, compassion, or integrity.  And, she couldn't tell the truth if she was sibjected to water-boarding.
Of course HRC wants to debate:  her campaign is in debt & she needs the free media.  Also Bill, who is a "sore loser" & is campaigning relentlessly, has tried to push Oregon voters to demand 2 debates in their state! Two!!!  Bill was guest on Rush's radio show shortly before the 3/4/08 primaries:  c.f. Commondreams.org article of 3/10/08 by Bob Fitrakis/Harvey Wasserman "Did Republicans Give Hillary Ohio Victory?"
Here's some baseball for you. Suppose the baseball playoffs were decided like this: Two teams must score a specific number of runs over the course of 50 games. At the end of those 50 games, if the number of runs needed has not been met, then the team with the most runs and total games won is declared the winner. Now, imagine the team that is behind after 41 games decides that the rules should be changed to allow the results from two exhibition games to be added. Knowing that in one of those exhibition games only one team's runs were tallied. Is that the way America's favorite past-time is played? Is that the way our political process should be played? America has always been about playing fair and playing by the rules. There is no shame in losing a fair fight. There is major shame in cheating to win.
Silly demands from the last gasp of desperation.
More yawn for the buck...Same Old Stuff Different Day..
Boring debates do nothing to change peoples minds...

These candidates already are popular...some more than others...

Just remember Lincoln needed to debate Douglas to become popular for center stage of National Politics...

I guess Hillary needs these debates because her national recognition is to low...Doesn't make much sense saying she thinks she's losing.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out..
Hillary, go debate with yourself . You can debate about your changing positions on Nafta,   bankruptcy laws, your Bosnia adventures,, your position on negative campaign.   This from the lady who said she and McCain were ready to be Commander in Chief , but not Obama and whose husband has made racially charged remarks and tries to blame it on Obama. Go debate with yourself about what you originally said about Michigan and Florida and what you are saying now. And maybe you should learn how to count.
By the way, what is your experience?  All I hear is words (yes, words,) I haven't seen any evidence.
And where are your 2007 tax returns?  the donors to the Clinton library? and maybe your medical records?. As a former president said , you are 60 and late at night your memory is hazy. And late is 11pm , not 3am
So,  you can have a big debate with yourself.
Even without moderators, Clinton will try to corner Obama on issues that aren't important to Americans, like Wright, Weather Underground, lapel pins, patriotism, why he likes arugala , Why he doesn't like beer and can't bowl etc etc etc.  In New York, Clinton has failed to debate her opponents several times.  There have already been enough debates.  We are tired of them. No Senator Clinton, you've lost the race and more attempts to "Knee-cap" Obama will just have to be done on your time as Barack has a message he wants to deliver to the people of this country.

And one more thing Hillary, as a Democrat, I am really offended by your claim that you've won more of the popular vote.  We are not idiots and no you can't count Michigan votes where you were the only candidate to leave your name on the ballot after you signed an agreement that Michigan wouldn't count.  Michigan and Florida really looks a lot like your vote on the war to me, please for the sake of the party, drop out after the last primaries are complete.
Obama actually offered her several dates on which to debate in NC which she refused.  So this is just another HRC attack, and, as such, is spurious.
The person who screams the most about debates is the person who is behind and needs free air time because their broke.

Sen. Obama is in the lead and does not have or need to debate her.  Let someone else bow down to her desperation.  Sen. Obama is doing just fine.
I don't want someone who likes to fight.  I want a peacemaker.  HRC doesn't represent me.

It is ludicrous to try to compare the political environment now to that of the era of Lincoln-Douglas.  They had no internet or cable news and women couldn't even vote.  Therefore, to reach the white males who could, multiple debates in various locations were necessary.  Thankfully, white males alone won't determine this election.

GO OBAMA!!!!
Demanding debates is the under dog's trick.  Don't fall for it, Barack!  The absolute last thing in the world I want to see right now is another damned debate.  I am so sick and tired of debates, of the media, of this campaign, and, most especially, of Hillary Clinton that I'd pay not to be subjected to any more of this.  Barack Obama is our nominee.  Hillary, if you are one iota a Democrat, quit.
As Sen Clinton rightly pointed out, the two candidates have debated head-to-head only four times. On the other hand, I don't blame Obama for ducking another debate...especially one where he has to stand up. Anyone notice how much better he does when they're sitting down? What up with that?
