Obama hoops it up Friday night

Posted: Sunday, April 27, 2008 11:32 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
KOKOMO, IN -- Obama has been known to shoot a few hoops from time to time, but Friday night in central Indiana was the first opportunity the traveling press has had to bear witness to his skills as a baller.

Obama played in a 3-on-3 basketball game after a town hall here. The other participants were Marion High School junior Blake Hancock and Indiana University-Kokomo freshman Kory McKay, both supporters who collected voter registration forms from new voters to qualify for the “3-on-3 "Challenge for Change."

Hancock, who wore a T-shirt with "Blake the Great" on the back, invited two friends to join the game. Also on the court were WNBA Indiana Fever’s Alison Bales -- the tallest player on the court -- and the Fever’s Tamika Catchings, an Olympic gold medalist, who refereed.

Obama came out on the floor to cheers of "Yes we can." He wore long navy sweats, white tennis shoes, and a gray USMC (US Marine Corp) t-shirt, a gift from an agent.

During the roughly 25-minute match on half the court, Obama played well, blocking a few shots and sinking four of his own -- including the winning shot from three-point range. At one point, he drove to basket for lay-up, missed, rebounded his own shot, tried again, and scored.

He had a few turnovers and managed several assists, many of them to Bales, who hit quite a few shots herself.

I felt that Sen. Obama showed his true personality of being just an everyday kinda guy enjoying a great sport with everyday kinda people. I liked it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let's see Hillary hit a three pointer......
I am a British and I live in London, UK. America should open the race or atleast the donations to world. I assure you, Obama will make a trilion pounds in the first day.
I have never had interest in American election until Obama appearance. We need another Obama in Brtaiin.

America is Blessed with Obama 08
Forget bowling in Pennsylvania.  In Hoosier country it is basketball.  Perhaps Chris Matthews can get his BFF (Lying)Hillary to go drinking and bowling.

Oh and lets stop talking about popular vote until you can figure out how to count the popular votes from caucus states.  It's not about Fl and Mi.  It's about counting all the popular vote from those states who did play by the rules. Prediction: Obama will win in Indiana (by a very small margin) and later that week Hillary will be given an opportunity to graciously bow out. Honesty does matter in Indiana.
meanwhile at the bar, hillary tossed back a few strong ones. i guess she heard about obama's latest superdelagate pick-up.

LOL
Great!! Obama...
What a stud...and great stress reliever...

Son's and daughters take heed..shotin' hoops is better than shootin' guns...
More debates???  Fuhgeddaboutit!   Let HIllary and McCain team up against OBAMA in a game of ball for all the marbles!
According to the Obama campaign they can't participate in a debate with Senator Clinton because they need this valuable time to directly reach out to Indiana voters. Clearly basketball is the new method. Debates are the old politics. Does Obama change the nature of the political game? Politicians never chickened out of debates in the past?
So will you now replace shots of him playing basketball with the bowling shots? No, likely not.  Now Dean says the race is 'essentially tied', it is obvious the Democratic (and I use the term loosely), leadership is going to strong-arm Obama into giving up to Hillary.  Sad but a proud moment for MSNBC which facilitated it.  Chris Wallace did an excellent interview with Obama and I do not watch Fox news, but Obama should go back and talk to him when I hope, he withdraws on his own!
FirstRead: when is the delegate count going to be updated?
Obama had no right to wear a united states marine corps shirt in he b ball game. He has not earned that right. He has not served as a marine. What a joke he is. What a jerk.
After Obama's poor showing at bowling, Hillary challenged him to a bowling match.  Let's see her try to beat him at basketball!  That would be much more interesting than another debate.

Go, Barack, go!  Swish!
Obama is TOO COOL!

Yeah, he's such an elitist to play hoops w/teenagers.
Micheal Jordan is an elitist!
Where is the commentary on the Jeremiah Wright interview on PBS?  I notice all major newscasts over the air and the internet are ignoring it.  I wonder why.  Is it because there were no gotcha moments to run away with?

It's a sad day when MSM totally ignores an important interview of a man they continuously vilified in the media, who has now cleared his name and reputation with many.  Everyone, First Read included, can take note of how real journalism is conducted.
Imagine this; a president who not only can exercise his brain but his phisycal body and do it with agility and style with common folks. Can you also imagine him sharing a table with republicans, independents and everybody else and brainstorming ideas with an intention to finding common solutions to our common problems? I do find signs in his game, and they are also the symptoms of his future administration

I don't know why he hasn't done this before.
Senator Clinton challenged Obama to a game of bowling he should challenge her to a game of basketball. However like her NCAA picks I believe she would leave the tough work to Bill. Do Americans want a President that dribbles like a girl?
In the Hoosier state publicizing himself by video taping a basketball game, and this isnt a political stunt...wow are we that naive, and who will do anything to win?
Change is good, if it is to something good.  I don't think change just for the sake of change is a positive thing.  Where are the specifics??  What does he want to change and to what.  Obama just touches on things and never gives specifics.

Why is he so afraid to debate Hillary??  Yes,  we had 20+ debates but not that many with just the two candidates.

Change to what Obama???
Why don't we have a video clip of this basketball game?
DSP
We were all treated to Senator Obama's lack of Bowling skills for several news cycles.
I for one would like to see some video of this fun match-up.  Since he is good at this it isn't news?
Doing well in basketball in Indiana is much more of a positive among Hoosiers than a gutter ball was negative in Penn.  I presume that we will see more 3 on 3 events in Indiana and NC.  His response to one question about his best shot was "my first step," is an excellent answer for the basketball fan.
I'd love to see some footage of this! I think his basketball skills will go over better in Indiana than his bowling skills in Pennsylvania.
I bet the other candidates cant play any sports what so ever. It just proves running for president should be a young persons game.

Obama/Richardson 08
You article claims USMC stands for "US Marine Corp" -- there is no such organization.  Try "US Marine Corps" instead.
Millions and I would suggests don't care about bowling, basketball but issues.

Why the media feels these issues are important is beyond us.  We are not electing a President based on his/her sports abilities.  We are only interested in who will addresses our issues.

With the Current Recission, it's amazing to many how the Media continues to DECRY so many thing that are not important to us.

The media can be sure, no matter what they print during this FULL EMPLOYMENT MEDIA YEAR, we will vote our conscience with no media input.
Thanks for the account of the basketball game, since we didn't get to see but a very brief glimpse on the news political coverage.  Why wasn't the basketball game and the three point play shown over and over like Sen. Obama's bowlling game was shown to lots of fodder by the journalists and pundints, especially that very biased Joe Scarborough.
Obama the bball player and W the runner, biker.
First Read, have you got the polls on basketball players and fans in the state?  I know the media wasted no time in coming up with bowling stats for Pennsylvania.
Obama basketball performance display much about what type of person and President he will be. A point guard who  runs the offense, sees the whole court, unselfish player, assists/allows others to get involved, plays defense and credits his teamates.

A team oriented player who will listen, debate, accept the possible action, make solid decisions and initiate(s) the best possible course of action

A complete team player who does not have the "I" but "We mentatility, This is exactly what America needs now.
If Hillary Clinton was to win the Democratic nomination with a majority of valid elected delegates, she would have a reasonable chance of winning the general election. If she won the nomination any other way, well, remember the Titanic?

If Senator Clinton can not win a majority of the valid elected delegates and can not win the general election with an illicit or suspect nomination, why is anyone still supporting her campaign?

It appears to be time to move on.
Will guys like Joe Scarborough who attacked Obama for his bowling skills play Obama in a one-on-one game?

I think not.

He should have challenged Hillary to a game of basket ball knowing white women can't jump.

he could challenge both Bill and Hill to a two-on-one....
Nice job Sen. Obama.

Wonder how Sen. Clinton spent her day? Cleaing her gun perhaps, or cashing another "speech" check from good old Bill's fine works abroad?
He would have impressed me more if he had gone back to Chicago to face the gangland war going on there and assure the people living in those neighborhoods there that he would bring to bear whatever senatorial power he had to ending it.  But then his Illinois senate record on harsher penalties for gangs has been consistently soft.
Extraordinary teamwork and sportmanship which demonstrates that when he stated 'WE THE PEOPLE...' he meant it. A real team player! I see a Leader with the ability to unite and move the People in this country forward. I absolutely admire and respect this man! He will make a WONDERFUL President! He is the one we've been waiting for.
First off, Athena. I've heard basketball players called many things but "baller" sends out too many unwanted connotations. Having said that, as I noticed the picture of Obama holding a basketball on the net and in the indy Papers I first thought it was a welcome switch from these dreary days of normal politics. Then it struck me that there easily might be some citizens whose vote was influenced by that picture.

To me, if that did occur, that would be quite the troubling situation since posed pictures of candidates like this amount to little more than misleading advertising just as ads like Chrysler's make the dubious link between their car and peace of mind, except now we have Obama letting his hair down to show he is just a regular guy.

But, he is not a regular guy. He is contending to become the next President of the United States, and though I am as much an athlete as the next guy and this photo op will not affect me, it may affect others. And that's what is sad. Besides, I doubt if the leaders of North Korea or Iran care much for basketball, and the next game Obama may play will be in their court anyway.
This is nice. If the country ever needs a shooting guard, Obama is the man. Until then, we need someone that knows how to run the country, and it's not Obama.
