Obama talks race, Wright, debates

Posted: Sunday, April 27, 2008 3:08 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Obama acknowledged he may have some work to do to attract blue-collar voters.

"They are less familiar with me than they are with her," he told Chris Wallace. "So we probably have to work a little bit harder. I’ve got to be more present. I’ve got to be knocking on more doors. I’ve got to be hitting more events. We’ve got to work harder, because although it’s flipped a little bit, we’ve always been the underdog in this race."

Obama expressed confidence that his race would not keep him from being elected in the general election, despite exit polls in Pennsylvania that showed votes divided along racial lines. He also argued he was putting unexpected states in play.

"If you look at the general-election polls, we are doing better against John McCain than Sen. Clinton is," he said. "And we are putting states in play like Colorado and Virginia that have not been in play for a very long time. Here in Indiana, we just-- you just saw polling by the Indianapolis Star showing me beating John McCain."

He called his association with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright a "legitimate political issue" but argued, as he has in the past, that the use of 30-second sound bites had simplified and caricatured his former pastor and said he felt that had been "done in a fairly deliberate way," calling it "unfortunate."

"I also know that I go to church not to worship the pastor, to worship God,” he added. “And that ministry, the church family that's been built there, does outstanding work, has been I think applauded for its outreach to the poor.”

He also discussed his association with 1960s radical William Ayers and issues like charter schools, merit pay for teachers, tort reform and Iraq. The senator said he would not debate Clinton again before the May 6th contests. The interview was taped Saturday, before news that Clinton had challenged Obama to a 90-minute, moderator-free, Lincoln-Douglas-style debate. After the news, Obama's campaign maintained that there had been plenty of debates and that after May 6, they would consider more.

If Hillary Clinton was to win the Democratic nomination with a majority of valid elected delegates, she would have a reasonable chance of winning the general election. If she won the nomination any other way, well, remember tht Titanic?

If Senator Clinton can not win a majority of valid elected delegates and can not win the general election with an illicit or suspect nomination, why is anyone still supporting her campaign?

Time to move on?
Obama can use more words to say nothing that anyone I know (actually I don't know him and neither does America).  I watched his interview with Wallace on Fox but it didn't tell me anything.  Just more of the same Obama we have seen.

I read Obama's book and they tell me a lot.  I think Obama doesn't much like his Mother's race (as he said it on more than one occasion).  Seems to me that comments that Obama wrote and comments that Michelle has said and what she wrote in her thesis just reinforced the ministry of Wright.  Seems they learned his lessons well.  Obama is scary.

I have never gotten my head around Obama and the more I read and see the less I like him and what he stands for.  I could never vote for his man.

Hillary 2008
As an Obama supporter, I would have liked Obama to more strongly denounce the sound-bite demonization of Wright and explain why it is so wrong.  But it looks like he has wisely chosen to continue to carefully distance himself from Wright.

My own view is that the interview with Wallace went well, but the Fox discussion afterwards apltly pointed out that he needs to work more to persuade certain blocs of voters specifically why they should vote for him (even if this does not win them over against Hillary, it will be beneficial for the general election).

I do find myself asking why Obama called Wright a legitimate issue.  Does he honestly believe this, or is he just being realistic?

Finally, if he's going to admit Wright is a legitimate issue, then he should have tried to explain boundaries for discussion of the Wright issue.  For example, if Wright is a legitimate issue, then why did Obama denounce the North Carolina GOP's recent ad?

Does FOX sometimes actually treat guests decently in order to mislead the occasional viewer into believing that hooey about "fair and balanced"?
When it comes to "racial divides" let the blame be spread where it belongs. For example we now have Rep. James Clyburn, superdelegate from South Carolina and the third-ranking Democrat in the House has again criticizing President Clinton about Clinton’s equating of  Obama’s victory  in January’s South Carolina primary to that of the Rev. Jesse Jackson in the 1988 primary. Clyburn remains infuriated over this and felt as did many in the black community that Clinton’s comments were meant to diminish Obama’s success in the South Carolina campaign.

Although Clinton’s comments were unnecessarily glib and boorish especially for an ex-President, they, like Obama’s words concerning how Pennsylvania’s citizens when stressed retreat to their guns and Bibles, were words “poorly chosen” with cameras and microphones recording their every utterance. Ironically, Obama did end up accumulating virtually the same percentage of South Carolina's vote as Jackson did in ’88, but that’s hardly the issue. The more important concern now seems to be that with all the blatant racial divisions this campaign has exposed with blacks and whites voting largely on racial lines, it isn’t necessary to misuse poorly chosen words to invent new such divisions were those do not exist,
Sen. Obama eased my mind somewhat during the The Sunday Morning session with Chris Wallace re. national policy issues but I am still very concerned about his stated position on Iraq and national defense. I would like to  hear him drawn out more on the size of our military forces and military assets.
I don't think Obama really answered anything in his interview with Wallace.  Just more of the talk around of the issues.  I watched the Rev. Wright deliver his speech to the NAACP.  He is right, it is different.  His comment about change came across almost as a threat.  I found his cadance to be hypnotic.  Maybe this is why Obama has gotten the attention of so many--hypnosis.  Change is good.  No one can disagree with that.  However, the change has to be to something positive and better.  Obama surely found out once he arrived in Washington that change isn't as easy as he seems to think it is.

Obama has policies (I think he adopted most of those from Hillary and Edwards).  Hillary has policies.  Her speech today in Indiana was GREAT.  No teleprompter and no notes.  Delivered just the way only she can.  She has a good command of what the issues are and what the solutions are.  She is in the SOLUTIONS BUSINESS.  Obama is in the talk about it business.

I feel that Hillary has a real grasp of what it takes to solve some of the problems that we need to have solved.  SOLUTIONS.  Give me solutions any old day over talk.  She can and will walk-the-walk.
Can she do it?  Yes she will!!!

Barach won't debate because he knows he always loses when he goes head to head with Clinton.

Clinton says, "Any time and any place" and Obama says, "No time no how".  Makes me think Clinton intimidates Obama.  Not such a good quality in a man that says he's ready to be the leader of the free world.
WHY OBAMA GIVES SO MUCH LENIENCY TO THIS WRIGHT? WHY OBAMA DOESNT SHUT HIM UP?  THIS GUY KNOWS WAY TOO MUCH ABOUT OBAMA.   OBAMA DOES NOT DARE TO CONFRONT HIM
For a nation whose strength and destiny dwell in its diversity of culture and race, and which is to be a molten pot of all races and leader of human civilization, I think the current RACE issue is a big test for all of us. The lessons we have learned from RACE in the past are hard and unforgetable: Hollocaust, aparteid, slavery etc...
Me being republican, I however decry this constant reference to Obama as black...and the fact that "white blue-collar" would not vote for a black man. This would mean that but for his race only Obama white-blue collar regardeless to his ideas and his individuality. Unfortunately this RACE issue is being manipulated both by politicians and by media. Not intending to vote for Obama, I however think this folk is helping all of us to take a minute and face this RACE issue once for all.
The difference between Obama and Clinton is that Obama will answer questions in an honest, adult-like manner; Clinton will answer them after a nervous, forced laugh and then answer the question like a kid; in fact, she will not answer the question.  Are you ready to be treated like an adult?  Vote Obama.
Obama has truly become the "black candidate".
Just a quick question on the definition of "race in this primary"? With a 90%-10% split of one group's vote operational, what split would make the other group's a non-issue as well?
I hear clucking from the Obama camp!
Wright is a stranger to the truth.  He is also Obama's spiritual and ethical mentor...
I find it interesting the discussion on race is why individuals are voting for Hillary simply because Barack is Black. No one seems to comment on the percentage of "Blacks voting for Barack because he is Black". Isn't that aspect of racism just as important?
Chris Wallace is   one of  a few conservative anchors on fox (noise) news that plays  by the rule in some extent on a net works that portrays blacks and democratic as inferior to consevtive demagogry and thinking ,Being white it hurts some times to watch the disregard handed out to black guest on Bill Orilley's show and the hatred he harbours night in, night out, so i just simply tune out fox and its noise. I broke my self impose embargo of not watching fox  (unfair and  unbalance news) to watch the interview. My first take was Chris Wallace is head and heel above the republican party hacks that mascarade as  broadcasters that constantly filled the air waves with hatred and mis information. It was refreshing  to see and hear the  professionalism and the non combative and civil way in which this dialouge was carried out, yet, all the time asking the tough questions and getting the answers he required. Its quite clear to me that Sen Obama is well on his way to challenge John McCain in the fall, and will win the oval office, taking into consideration that John McCain although given all this free ride by the media has not put forward one tangible plan that is not a off shoot of the failed polices of the George Bush administration. No wonder this nation going throuh aches and financial pains are regestering in the thousands to be able to  vote come november with one aim, and that is to change the quagmire we have been forced into. So Chris Wallace i say good job for  asking the tough questions and to Sen, Obama I say you are well on your way, you have been pull through the mud, drag through the fire by the vicious attacks coming out of Fox News (Fox noise) and yet you grows stronger after each hachet jod is done on you.Rupert Murdock should do a massive house cleaning at this station and bring in anchors that are fair and balance and stop this outlet from becoming a cult.
Is this over yet?
This is all fine but I'm wondering why my favorite source for news did not carry live the Jeremiah Wright speech at the NAACP convention in Detroit yesterday.
Both CNN and FOX carried the speech live. CNN ran the speech at least twice fully.

Is this a budget problem? Or, do you guys just shut down on Sundays in honor of the religious right?
IT'S BECOMING MORE AND MORE CLEAR THAT REV. WRIGHT IS ON CLINTONS PAYROLL! THE TIMING FOR THIS MAN TO COME OUT AND CAUSE SO MUCH CONTREVERCY FOR OBAMA ISN'T SITTING WELL. IT HAS BECOME OBVIOUS HE IS FAR FROM SOMEONE SUPPORTING OBAMA BY HIS ACTIONS! HE COUNSELLED CLINTONS WITH MONICA RIGHT? YEA, HE'S BEEN BOUGHT!!
It was a great interview with Obama....finally some honest and fresh statements with integrity. It was the opposite of a Clinton interview.
Personally I am sick of debates and would like to go forward to electing our strongest nominee, Barack Obama.  For the first time in a long time a candidate, against all odds has come forward with a message of unity and hope.  Something the American people have been without for a long, long time.  We are the aggressor nation in the world so I wonder why people are so afraid.  We need to look to ourselves for our strength.
Obama 08
Please stop playing Rev. Wright Sermon on TV and talking about him unless you and other news organizations are trying to start a Civil War in this country.  No good can become of this in the end.
Like Rev. Wright said this week, Obama is talking like a politician, imagine that he is a polician not an outsider as he wants us all to believe. So much for the change message.
Clinton wants another debate...good god save us...
b/c she is 15 million in DEBT!  She can't run a fiscal campaign, she can't afford the same coverage, tv commercials, leaflets, etc. b/c he campaign is in the RED...MINUS...DEBT!  That is why she keeps saying how much she was outspent...like that is Obama's fault!  He runs a fiscal campaign, he raises more money, which is crucial in a general election!  How will she compete against McCain when she can't run a fiscal primary campaign!!  It is laughable!
A debate is FREE!  She wants FREE advertising!  Period!  She pushes the issue now...b/c like before...when she pused debate...debate...she is BROKE again.
And she is gong to fix our economy?
I wish Obama would use more one on one interviews.  It's a really good venue for him.  He didn't seem to "speechify" which some have criticized and he didn't seem to view the negative questions as silly.  He was poised as always and gave the image that he cared.  I really thought it was a good one for him and he should continue doing that in lieu of debates.  I think it would help him.
It was a good interview.  Dan Abrams had been tu-tutting about it because Fox historically has been so negative on Sen. Obama, but he reached more voters by going on Fox. Wallace, to his credit, was no Stephanopoulos.
I'm glad to see that Obama did this interview. Obama was fantstic and Chris Wallace did a respectful interview.
I listened to Rev. Wright speak last night...his entire speech.  I found him to be quite engaging and I learned a lot about cultural differences.  I am glad I was able to hear him in the entire context of a speech.

I did not find him devisive...I found him to be wanting to change people for the better by helping us to understand between us.

This 59 year old white male learned a lot last night about culture differences. I am going to speak for myself here...I like "The Rev."
Obama brings an honestry and decency...a chance at integrity in the WH, that Hillary has no clue about. She is about LIES and deceit...anything to win. That is not good politics, it is thievery. We do not need such ndishonesty in the WH.No more LIES about Bosnian bullets, NAFTA support, peace in Northern Ireland. Obama in 2009.
What Rev. Wright can do now is to pray for Clintons for the remission of sins.  They might to anyting or say anything to pass St. Peter at the gate of Heaven later.

I have been vrey moved by REverend Wright's  discussions with Bill Moyers, his impassioned speech to the NACP and now to the Press Club - By taking snipets of REvrend Wright's sermons and comments - the Media has shown themselves to be the lowest of low in stirring up racism and controversy that is totally taken out of context - I for one as a white, educated, non-religious female, for the first time since I was a young girl, want to go to this black  church and be a part of it - to listen to someone discuss the powers of spiritual belief and how we can help through this man's powerful inspiration can provide strength and understanding to face all the troubles that face this nation, which by the way,  includes the afro-amercian community that has faced the worst of these clamities.
Shame on MSNBC for their slash and burn reporting and hyping of comments taken out of context - that really are apart of an amazing discussion and to turn this into an ugly race war! and SHAME on MSNBC - Morning Joe with Mika making a baseless, humiliating argument twith David Axelrod that Barack has to answer to his pastor's words (even though they are absolutely rooted in truth and beauty), for trying to bate Barack Obama to come on their program to comment

Barack is in a no win situation to many- but My husband and I feel, that if it matters, we believe that Barack should stand even more firmly with Reverend Wright - Not disown him - we are embracinghim! He makes us very proud to be Americans - WE should all listen if we truly want to bridge this racial divide
Well, well, well...at least Obama states that he goes to church not to worship his pastor but God. He need to realizes God is working through his pastor along side with the devil as well. Thus you have both the God and the Devil working through his Pastor. I listen to his Pastor's Wright speech...unbelievable...he is intellectually smart and charming, however, appears incredibly stupid on National TV. The introduction was weird and an overkill introducing Rev. Wright. Bullshit on Rev. Wright stating that the Black Church in mostly understood and he described himself as descriptive not divisive. Now I understood how he can have over 8,000 church members over the past 3 decades of ministry. He must and most probaly realizes that his sheep flock church members are a mirror image of his attitude. I can now understand the Black's attitude toward not only America but also the white people. Obama should talk about his Rev. Wright's bitterness whose sermon that he listened to the past 20 years as well as his own. I am still supporting HIllary still to this point.

Thank you for reporting the article from the Boston Glove titled "Hillary Strangelove".  This should be of great concern to all citizens regardless of one's political preference.
