Obama: The Re-Launch?

Posted: Monday, April 28, 2008 9:02 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The New York Times front-pages that Obama “is making subtle changes to his campaign style and message in an effort to strengthen his appeal to blue-collar voters and to avoid a defeat in Indiana that aides fear could give Democratic Party leaders further pause about his viability in a general election… Mr. Obama is seeking to absorb the lessons of his defeat in Pennsylvania. The changes reflect concern that he is being portrayed by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as distant and culturally out of touch with many working-class Democrats, a worry underlined by her lopsided victory among many of those voters in that state on Tuesday and last month in Ohio.”

More: “In interviews with several associates and aides, Mr. Obama was described as bored with the campaign against Mrs. Clinton and eager to move into the general election against Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee. So the Obama campaign is undertaking modifications in his approach intended to inject an air of freshness into his style. In strategy sessions last week, advisers concluded that Mr. Obama, of Illinois, needed to do a better job reminding voters of his biography, including his modest upbringing by a single mother and one of his first jobs as a community organizer helping displaced steel mill workers. He also has to sharpen his economic message, they said, to improve his appeal and connection with voters in hope of capitalizing on the sensibilities that served him well in Midwestern states.”

The Washington Post adds, “[I]n a noteworthy shift, the Illinois senator is trying to reach working-class and middle-class voters by arguing more explicitly that the reform ideas driving his campaign can address the economic troubles that threaten their way of life. Supplanting lobbyist influence with citizen activism, uniting the country beyond petty partisan gamesmanship and bringing more candor to government, he argues, are not just abstract goals, but concrete steps that can level the playing field and lead to a more equitable distribution of the nation's wealth… Obama hopes the message, still being refined, will bring a victory in the May 6 primary here and help him close out the battle for the Democratic nomination against New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. But interviews here suggested it is not an easy sell. Obama's faith in the power of numbers has taken hold with young and engaged voters, but it is harder to convince Americans who have grown dissociated from their government that they have a role to play beyond going to the polls every few years.”

WSJ runs a similar story. "Barack Obama recast his call for change by speaking more directly to voters' economic concerns as polls show him in a dead heat with Hillary Clinton in Indiana. The shift comes amid signs that Sen. Obama's lofty appeals for hope and change may not be resonating with financially insecure voters, and may even be driving them away.”

The Washington Post looks at the debate Wright has sparked inside many black churches. "Wright's appearance today at the National Press Club will begin the annual Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference. The conference, named for the noted religious scholar, will bring black religious leaders from across the country to Howard University. And at the center of the discussions will be the powerful and provocative tenets of liberation theology.”

“Beyond the political debate over how Wright's words have affected Obama's campaign, the spotlight on Wright's sermons has sparked a lively discussion over the theology among the Washington area's large and diverse African American church communities. Some question whether black liberation theology's focus on race and oppression is relevant anymore, whether clinging to a philosophy forged in the civil rights era means holding on to past hurts. Others think it is needed now more than ever in the face of continuing discrimination, chronic unemployment and high incarceration rates among blacks."

The AP wraps some of Wright’s comments to the NAACP: “‘I'm not here for political reasons,’ Wright said. ‘I'm not a politician. I know that fact will surprise many of you because many in the corporate-owned media made it seem like I am running for the Oval Office. I am not running for the Oval Office. I've been running for Jesus a long, long time, and I'm not tired yet. I am not one of the most divisive’ black spiritual leaders, Wright said. ‘I'm one of the most descriptive.’”

The L.A. Times un-earths a donor that got a favor from Obama, via state grant, while Obama was in the state senate. This is one of those "he's just another politician" stories, but it certainly seems to hurt Obama since it runs counter to his own claims.

Former San Jose Mercury News political reporter Phil Trounstine offers up his analysis of the Clinton-Obama electability argument and sides with Obama. "If Obama wins the nomination -- which is the only outcome for the Democrats that will not leave their party in shreds -- McCain and his allies will not just throw the kitchen sink at him, they'll throw every sink they can find from the bathroom, the laundry room and the garage -- just as they would at Clinton (from Whitewater and the Rose Law Firm to Travelgate and Bosnian sniper fire). But unless he is so crippled by Clinton before he has a chance to face McCain head-on  -- and there's a real question about the Clintons intentions here -- there is no sound basis on which to base the argument that he would be a less effective standard-bearer for the Democrats than would the much-despised former first lady."

Obama's "bitter" comments have made their way into a House ad for a Mississippi special election.  The ad was produced by the NRCC, by the way.

Hillary’s 2008 presidential campaign has always been about the Clintons’ own self-interests.  Hillary started her campaign believing she was headed for a coronation; a sense of entitlement that screamed “I deserve to be president.”  She has deliberately tried to undermine Obama’s electability in the general election, knowing that would be disastrous for the Democrats in November.  She has engaged in what can only be described as the ‘kamikaze strategy’ - (‘I’ll destroy Obama before I’ll let him win!’)  Is Hillary trying to set Obama up for a November loss so that she can be the Democratic candidate in 2012?

It is ludicrous for Hillary to argue that “Obama cannot win” against John McCain.  It is Hillary who cannot win a general election among all 50 states.  In the Democratic primary – it is a majority of the Democrats who are voting against Hillary.  She has a chronic problem with how she is viewed by the majority of voters; her ratings for honesty, favorability and trustworthiness are in a steady decline this year.  How can Hillary expect to win a general election where Republicans and Independents will be in the voting mix?  She is either delusional or underhandedly hoping to damage Obama so he will lose to John McCain and she, therefore, will be the Democratic frontrunner in 2012.  Kinda of like getting another bite at the apple.  Crazy?  Not nearly as crazy at Hillary’s campaign tactics.  Her repugnant presidential campaign is the second major fiasco over which Hillary has presided, ‘Hillarycare’ being the first.  A recent AP poll found that Obama has as much a chance of defeating John McCain as does Hillary.

Blue-collar workers will never vote for an elitist like Obama.
I don't think either one of them is worth their weight in water.  Obama is a better speaker, he is more passionate when he speaks and he seems to want to be a person who can change the world.  I gave him a pass on his relationships in the church in with Rezco, due to the fact there has been no serious proof that either Rezco or Wright have seriously hurt him in any way shape of form.

Having said that, I would have to drink a case of Jack Daniels and follow it with a beer keg chaser before I would even consider walking into a voter booth and vote for The Clinton's.  Ho can you trust a campaign that has raised over $189 million dollars and is still in the hole?  Having read through some of The Clinton's campaign spending, it is pretty obvious that they do not know how to use money properly, so I doubt they would know how to spend the people's money wisely as well.  Hillary approaches this campaign as her own and she will expects to be president, she does not want to earn it.  Her plans have backfire and rip off written all over them.

When you look at these two people, you know why John McCain will be the next president of the United States.
Rev. Wright is not only Barack Obama's pastor but now he is preaching to all the United States....See what hate and division do..? See what the politics of seperation fuel....God Bless Rev. Wright..."Let freedom ring- let freedom ring....God almighty.!!!
LET FREEDOM RING!!!!!"- MLK
The only reasonable, possible explanation to the Wright/Obamba debacle is that Obama agreed with his mentor for 20 YEARS.  That is why Wright is out there giving his Black Recentment Speeches and Obama dares not refused nor denounced him because if Obama does, then Wright will spill out exactly what Obama said and how he felt for these last 20 YEARS.  Obama cannot denounce nor refused Wright because the truth will come out.  Wright is Obama’s true political liability.  Expect the following:
1- WRITE A BOOK.
2- CONTINUE TO GIVE NATIONAL SPEECHES.
3- HE WILL CHARGE FOR THOSE NATIONAL SPEECHES.
4- HE WILL APPEAR IN MORE COMMENTARY PROGRAMS.
5- DONT BE SURPRICE IF WRIGHT HIMSELF RUNS FOR SENATOR.
6- THERE WILL BE A WRIGHT IDIALOGY BASED ON HIS POLITICAL ANGLE.
7- OBAMA WILL NOT DISASSOCIATE, NOR RENOUNCED REV. WRIGHT.

SO ASK YOURSELF WHY?  Why CANT THE NEXT POSSIBLE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DENOUNCE AND RENOUNCE HIS CRAZY, ANTI-AMERICAN PASTOR?    EASY; WRIGHT KNOWS TOO MUCH.
Barack should bring Rev. Wright with him on the campaign trail. Wright would be a good person to explain things to those blue collar workers. He (Wright) will let them know how the US works as a country.
I watched Bill Moyers' interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright.  I also watched the speech he gave to the Detroit NAACP last night.

I guarantee that the critics of Rev. Wright and of Sen. Obama posting on this blog will not be able to make either of the above statements.

Rev. Wright is a whole lot smarter than he has been given credit for being by his critics.  He is a lot more complex than a 30-second sound bite can demonstrate.

My advice to the GOP and to the Clinton Campaign is quite simple:

If you want to stop the Obama Campaign you're going to have to stick with Senator Obama himself because Rev. Wright is WAAAAAAAAY out of your league!
"Obama - the relaunch"

I think what the country is now seeing in big numbers is buyer's remorse. From the middle of January - March, we heard a lot of inspirational talk with no substance. Then a few skeletons were revealed, kool-aid effect started to weaken, and many began asking "who is this guy? what does he really stand for?" The middle class started to realize that if they did not speak up, this country was surely going down the tubes.

Who votes for him?
- new young voters, with not a lot of experience at trying to make ends meet
- affluent liberals that have few if any financial woes
In other words...the McGovern crowd...very important groups, but they don't speak for the masses.
There are many Americans (like my parents) on the verge of retirement, that have worked hard and saved for their future, that want to make sure the economy holds, so they don't need to think about reentering the work force.

We need to focus on how to fix the economy.

We know that Americans are still yearning for answers, otherwise the PA debate would have not had such a large viewing audience. Maybe it was a bust...but we still need answers.

Hillary gives solutions that are real...he in fact, just gives speeches.

BTW...Rev. Wright (for republicans) is the gift that just keeps on giving.
the only way rev wright hurts obama is by way of the msm!!!!!! obama is the candidate for our future!!!! the future is now!!!!! after listening to rev this morning,we are convinced that its the media and the leaders of racism who pushes fear, twists words(selective)msm has never critiqued every single word unless it profits their agenda;in order to discredit the very peace love and unity that we all claim to want.!  i put this question to everyone; who is the real wolf in sheeps clothing?????????
Obama was pulled away from his message.  He will have to get back to it before the GE.

He must stay above the fray and keep pushing his concrete plans that encompass hope and change!  They will try to drag you down to their level and if they do, you can get stuck there permanently.

If Senator Obama really wants to connect with Hillary's constituency he has to do it in person, through mail and on television.  Blue-collar people also like fun and feeling like they are important.  It is the reason that traveling preachers, high-energy evangelistic churches and carnivals are still so popular.  Internet savvy and geriatric don't go together.  Internet savvy and working-class is hit-or-miss.  Debates aren't watched by someone who is working or when it conflicts with prime-time.  They are watched by the Jerry Springer crowd only if they are like the last farce in Pennsylvania.  Debates are useless.  He has basically stated this in his response to Senator Clinton about the debates.

This is why Senator Obama should go back to big speeches in small towns. If he keeps ignoring her and addressing the people directly he will eat into her base very effectively.  Senator Clinton attacked Barack Obama for his speeches because for him it is a strength and for her it is a weakness, not because they lack substance.  She is incapable of anything high-energy or motivating unless it is in an us-against-them (polarizing) situation.  If Senator Obama really wants to counter back about this one all he has to do is ask "I am able to attract thousands of people to an enthusiastic rally whether it is in a big town or small town, why can't she?  What is it about me that she doesn't have?"

Let her answer the questions.  He doesn't have to anymore.

I'm glad Obama is "retouching" his stump speech.  He needs to connect to blue-collar workers.

I'm also happy Rev Wright gave an outstanding speech yesterday at the NAACP dinner.

It was breathtaking.  I'm hoping can see "A Change Is Coming".

I'm hoping people can understand that it is time for unity among all races, classes, and gender.

Our respect amonst other nations is lacking and depreciating every hour.  OBAMA is the only Candidate that will change this image. PERIOD.

OBAMA is the better standard bearer and will bring home a decisive vi victory for his party and the country. cock eyed optimism maybe but counting on the country to follw the lead of the educated this time.  the highly educated have put their faith in Mr. Obama and so will I. Go Barack Go we need the transformative change big time.
That's probably a good idea. Obama's always been at his best with this kind of message. And more teflon-y, for lack of a better word.
Making changes to his approach/message? Sounds like what a "typical" politician would do. But hold on one minute...Obama has been running like an atypical polician, an outsider. Oh well, more of the same. I guess the "CHANGE" message has finally gotten old.
Hear hear - but don't let the frame you to getting in a debate you are not interested in. The blue collars will come home after clinton leaves
If I were running against Hillary I'd be bored too.  I'd be bored of all the lies and personal attacks she has leveled against him in her attmept to ensure that if she's not the nominee he won't be able to win in November.  Hillary "Republican" Clinton is McCain's best campaign surrogate.

Go Obama!
Americans, stop listening to the media and do your research about the candidates...do not be confused by appearances go for the character.
A leader is a person that is able to move and inspire millions to do something for their country, to be better, to aspire to that which is good and healthy for all americans, to vote and go out of their way to volunteer and donate to the cause of american ideals. of freedom, equality and prosperity.
A leader is transparent, has no need to insult others and sticks with the truth.
A down to earth person who is at ease in the halls of power and the huts of indigeneous people. Someone who has a universal appeal with no need to change himself.
You have never seen anyone like this and he refuses to be pegged.
We need a person in tune with the times, who is cooperational not confrontational, who can build consensus not division.
Who fires up the youth of the nation, our future.

Guess who is the leader?

A white independent woman in her '60
Rev. Wright has valid points, and actually, a well educated Theologian. He may have caused Obama some votes, but if anyone is voting against Obama because of his relationship with this man, isn't taking or listening to Obama's message that we can make a difference and Hope for Change. And Rev. Wright with American pride, fought for this country, a country that both himself and Obama love, and are frustrated with.
Obama's early campaign was brilliant, and he's strayed away from it, to his loss.  He needs to recapture that "I 'm for the regular person, and I have hope we regular people can pull things up" message, or he'll be buried under his "friend" Wright's current rhetoric sideshow and Hllary's nonsensical attacks.
Obama and the democrats will have no problem running against McCain.  He's made way too many mistakes which the media is giving him a free ride on.  Americans are quite frankly, sick of republicans, and what they have allowed to happen to this country, especially by the republican congress continuing to support the republican president who has totally ruined this country.
I think Barack needs to talk about the jobs he will help the unemployed find or what type of training he will put into effect.  Please be more explicit whenever and however he can.  I want to see Barack out next president.  Go BARACK!
Thanks to people like Andrea Mitchell and others like her we are now listening more to our local radio station instead of MSNBC(linton. Why don't you start each hour off with a disclaimer stating "This is sponsored by the McCain?Clinton campain." and that no truth is intended or real news.
CLINgONs boaaar <oops> bore me too!
[[I guarantee that the critics of Rev. Wright and of Sen. Obama posting on this blog will not be able to make either of the above statements.]]

Wrong.

Wright is such a bigot, that when you look up the word bigot in the dictionary, Wrights picture is by it with the caption "This man is a bigot".
I see it is no longer about Obama, it is about black people period.  Say what you will, The Rev Wright issue is not about Barack or him, its about the same ideology that has existed in this country toward black people, hatred.

One question, how is Obama an elitist?

- The man just finished paying off his student loans. I mean if he did not write his books he would still be in debt.
- The man was a community organizer for 20 years.
- The man grew up basically broke.

One more comment on this election. Mark it there are racist far and few but do we realize that there is no difference between Clinton and Obama as far as policy. So let me ask everyone and be honest with yourself, is the clinton effect going to be a predominant one in the world which has seen the same policy implementation for the past 40 years or more? Or will you realize that the Obama effect is real and that presenting his policies( same as clinton) will have a more predominate effect to the world because he understands everyone from the ground up and he is a genuine person who the world has respected.

Karl Rove's playbook:  Attack your opponents strengths:
1)  Obama is an attractive bi-cultural candidate who promises to bring blacks, whites and other Americans together unlike any previous candidate.  Strategy:  use guilt by association to paint him as a closet racist.
2)  Obama is a bright intelligent, graduate of Columbia and Harvard Law School who turned down lucrative offers to do community organizing in south Chicago.  Strategy:  twist an offhand comment to paint him as a liberal elitist.
3)  Obama is a policy wonk with detailed policy statements behind his inspiring speeches.  Strategy:  attack his speeches as empty rhetoric and paint him as an inexperienced, empty suit.
4)  Obama has ran on changing politics as usual in Washington and elevating the rhetoric of the campaign.  Strategy:  attack him relentlessly until he is forced to respond, then accuse him of being a hypocrite.
5)  Obama refuses to take PAC money and lobbyist money.  Strategy:  scour his past to any evidence of influence.  Equate contributions by employees of oil companies with lobbyist moneys.   Say there really isn't a meaningful difference.
6)   Obama is raising tons of money from internet donors.  Strategy:  boast that your opponent is outspending you 3 to 1 in a state you were supposed to win by 20 points and brag that you still beat him by 9 points.
7)   Obama is a gentleman.  Strategy:   Impugn his manhood and get the press to call him a wimp.
8)   Obama follows the party rules.  Strategy:  make a big fuss about the importance of respecting the will of the people in Michigan and Florida.  Paint Obama as thwarting democracy to serve his own ends.
9)  Obama has the race locked up from a popular vote and earned delegate standpoint and thus has no incentive to submit to another debate.  Stategy:  Loudly challenge Obama to a 22nd debate and call him a chicken for refusing to agree.  Whisper to superdelegates that he's not tough enough to be president.
10)  Obama polls better than you do against McCain.  Strategy:  Make a big show that you've won all the big important states and insinuate that because you've won them, that means he won't in the general election.

Sound familiar?
It is apparent that people refuse to listen and hear only what they want.  They both stand on their own words and actions.  Reverend Wright is his own man as is Senator Obama.  Senator Clinton is far from cooperational or confrontational.  She is glib and deceitful.

It's funny that we have yet to hear the sound bite in which Reverend Wright said in Senator Obama's role as president he (Reverend Wright) will "come after Senator Obama" holding him (Senator Obama) accountable for policies that he (Reverend Wright) feels objectionable.

Leazana and Lea you are way off base as you spew your tales and fictional actions of honorable American.  No matter, Senator Clinton's baggage has not been rummaged through as she claims as in addition to her suitcase the American public will soon be looking in her trunk, garment bag and even her carry-on to see where all of the body parts are buried.

No time for paralysis of analysis as we've heard the candidate's policy stances.  We need to focus the candidate's and their direct contact with the American public as they are the one's on the ticket.
educated, <50, starbuck's drinking woman wrote: "Hillary gives solutions that are real...he in fact, just gives speeches."

Yes, I know that this is what the Clinton campaign would like you to believe, but is it really the case? I have heard it repeated *so many times* but I have yet to hear any concrete examples of what the real difference is. She claims she has more "experience" -- can you name any? She says that she has a record of accomplishment -- what is it? She says that Obama only gives speeches -- but just what is that she is doing?

If you compare Obama's legislative record with Clinton's, he comes out looking better. If you add on to that the things that he managed to do in Illinois, he looks even better still. On the other hand, any time that she has brought up something resembling a specific claim about her own accomplishments, it tends to wither upon scrutiny (pick your example: bring peace to the north of Ireland; opening borders for refugees in Kosovo; bravely dodging sniper fire in Bosnia; supposedly having written SCHIP; effectively pushing NAFTA while her husband was president and then claiming the exact opposite when it was convenient for her to do so; voting for the war without bothering to read the NIE ... and, of course, the early healthcare debacle which earned us a Republican Congress and Newt Gingrich).

And then there is her campaign. If she were to manage an administration they that she has managed her campaign (no plan after early February; mounting debt despite early record donation levels; desperate dismissals of half the country as irrelevant for the sole fact that they didn't voter for her; big, big salaries for friends working on the campaign, but failing to pay health insurance for staff for over a month...) I find it hard to believe that she would be anything short of an enormous dissapointment, to put it mildly.

Compare that with Obama's campaign. This has got to be the most efficient campaign in decades, and without resorting to "kitchen sink strategies," or claiming that his Republican opponent is better suited for the job than his Democratic rival. He has run this campaign across the entire country, laying the groundwork for Democratic Party organizing for local and state elections in places like Oklahoma and Virginia. Hillary, on the other hand, has decided that non-coastal Dems don't matter and that our votes really needn't bother being counted.

So, for Hillary supporters, I'd like to hear answers to two simple questions that for some reason the MSM doesn't bother to ask:

1. From hear on out, exactly *how* does Hillary win the nomination? Please give some specifics, something along the lines of the Obama campaign's February spreadsheets.

2. What exactly is her relevant experience that we keep hearing so much about? I'd be especially interested in hearing exactly how she "crossed the commander-in-chief threshold."

I'm waiting, but after waiting for several months to get satisfactory answers on these things, I will not be holding my breath.
The media is saturating the news with Wright's most outrageous comments. The only balanced report I have heard is from NPR that put it in perspective of context. The media owe Americans to play equally outrageous comments of other pastors. Wright is not the only high profile minister who makes inflamatory statements. Many of McCain's supporters are just as wacko, but we don't see or hear any of them. Hillary used to help radical leftists but why are they escaping scrutiny? This seems a foolish fray of Obama bashing to get ratings. Shame on you! Now the American media, the same folks who brought us the debacle in Iraq, are treating us to the same stupid news spins and ratings raiders, so we can elect another fool to the White House.
Obama is a terrible candidate for the Democratic party. We can never poke fun at Bush claiming he is a uniter -not a divider again.Obama has earned the label with his dividing the democrats by race.
People have voted against their best common interests for too many elections.  The last time I've seen voters vote for the best interest of all perople was when they voted for JFK.  Now is the time to stop doing that. Please vote for Obama.  He represents the best for all people (classes, races, genders and nations.
Thats a big laugh lea fredericksburg, va. hahaha
Hillary is full of twists and turns if it is in her interest to lie and twist one way there she goes; no turn the other way sounds better this time.  Hahaha We see through Hillary. And by the way did we all here Reverend  Wright served 6 years in the Marines How many years did Bill serve? Do I get and answer.  hahaha OBAMA!
educated, <50, starbuck's drinking woman -"Hillary gives solutions that are real...he in fact, just gives speeches.

BTW...Rev. Wright (for republicans) is the gift that just keeps on giving."

Sorry educated - But I couldn't disagree with you more!  I don't think Hillary is the one to vote for when it comes to our economy.  She is too much in the pocket of big business.  And as far as Rev. Wright, if you are so educated, did you actually read or listen to his full speeches?  If you did, I really can't see what you would object to.
Obama touts himself as an uniter.  He has failed at this.  I heard Obama and Wright over the week-end and if I learned one thing this is it:  Obama must never be president.  Can you imagine Wright, Ayers, Farrakhan, Auchi, Abassi, Khalidi or even Michelle and Obama in the white house. Can you imagine Wright as vice-president???  God forbid.

Read Obama's books and be fearful.
I'm a blue collar worker for Obama. I'm not rich or educated in post graduate study. I believe I have good common sense, though, and it's enough for me to see through some of the type-casting and spinning within the media. I will not be lumped in with the "Clinton Blue Collars", though I was one before. It's an old bandwagoning trick of politics and I will not be taken for that ride.
You guys over-analyze things, I think. Candidates alter their stump speeches all the time; especially now that the stump speeches get so much coverage. If they didn't, you'd criticize them for saying the same things over, and over, and over again.

Before the cable campaign coverage onslaught, candidates did say the same things over, and over... But no one except the insiders' insiders realized it. Having the blanket coverage helps in some cases, because for instance Bill Clinton can't get away with the crap he's used to getting away with.

But it also hurts in that it creates too much familiarity with all the candidates (I feel like I could give the Obama or Clinton stump speech, and I've never heard either given in person), and familiarity breeds contempt. Because of the media, we're bound to end up with presidents from now on that nobody likes too much.
First of all, Rev. Wright does not exist nor did he ever exist to either hurt or help Barack Obama's campaign. Obama is one member of his church - one of thousands with all types of professions. Where is the law or mandate that suggest Wright should be silent because one of his members is running for President?

Wright is not "back" from anything. This is what the man does. He speaks at public engagements, he writes books, he delivers sermons. He didn't just start this "lately." This is his livelyhood and way of life.  Why should he all of a sudden be muted because some people either don't like or are not used to his way of preaching? That notion is ridiculous and suggests that candidates can't ever have a confidante, religious leader, or mentor that doesn't fit into the "model" that some of us think he should.  What's next, do we go around analyzing everything that every supporter of every presidential candidate says?

Obama explained his position on Wright, who by the way is no longer the pastor of his church, and that should be sufficient.  It is beyond irritating that the media continues to label Wright's speeches as speaking out. This is what the man does. He's a preacher and a pastor. Not a politician. He should not have to be silent because of Obama. If that's the case, when should he speak again? After Obama locks the nomination? No not then, because him speaking could hurt the general election? So after that? Oh no, Rev. Wright, don't say anything then, you'll hurt his approval ratings.  Give me a break. I am a supporter of Obama but I certainly do NOT agree with the idea of silencing Rev. Wright. They are two different people with two different lively hoods.  The media needs to stop suggesting that Obama can control Wright's mouth or that he should. All of us need to stick to the issues and concentrate on getting republicans out of office so we can afford to buy food and gas! Leave Rev. Wright alone and move on. Stop mixing his professional practices with Obama's campaign for crying outloud!
Democrat in KY, white, over 50 female.
I will not vote for inexperience - we have just suffered through 8 years of that.

So, when I refuse to vote for Obama it is because he is inexperienced and too idealistic.

Clinton or McCain.
NObama-MI wrote: "Obama has earned the label with his dividing the democrats by race."

Yes, having the gumption to be born biracial and then -- when he should know better! -- actually running for president! The nerve! How divisive! Doesn't he know that only allowing white people a viable shot at the White House actually *unites* our country?

Countdown to the next poster to mention Farrakhan and some other Muslims just to get the agitation factor up a bit higher: 3... 2... 1...
Ha! "Just say NO to Obama and Wright and Michelle etc. etc." got in the Farrakhan reference before I managed to get the countdown fully underway. I am awestruck.
America shows her true colours. And its black and white, not red blue and white :(

'At the core of the Obama candidacy is the belief that freethinking openhearted people in America outnumber cretins, racists, the willfully ignorant, the gleefully hate-filled, the small minded, the backward looking, jingoistic morons, the frightened, the addicts of brain-wrecking soundbites, and above all those stuck in a pattern of thinking that leads inevitably to shrunken horizons.'

As an adult who was raised in a blue collar home (and very proud of it) I find the comments suggesting that Obama has disenfranchised that group to be ridiculous.  My dad worked in a bakery and retired at age 62 making $36,000 annually - and if he were still on this earth he would embrace Senator Obama because he is committed to moving this country forward with a new agenda - a new approach - and a new attitude. This approach will help working class people - doing things the same way will not.  As a country we deserve someone who believes that there is more than one way lead a nation.  We may not have another opportunity like this for generations - let's not blow it by electing someone who virtually guarantees more of the same old, same old.
Obama touts himself as an uniter.  He has failed at this.  I heard Obama and Wright over the week-end and if I learned one thing this is it:  Obama must never be president.  Can you imagine Wright, Ayers, Farrakhan, Auchi, Abassi, Khalidi or even Michelle and Obama in the white house????Can you imagine Wright as vice-president???  God forbid.

Read Obama's books and be fearful.
Wright or no Wright, Rezco or no Rezco, Ayers or no Ayers. Obama is still an extreme liberal with a very socialist agenda. Same for hillary, either one of these two would do grievous damage to our country (no, McCain's not a whole lot better).

The Obama campaign continues to shed light on the preponderance of unapologetic bigotry within mainstream Black culture. Whoever thinks that Obama has any chance of winning a nationwide election needs a brain transplant.
I have to say- I fear for the sanity of anyone who's read "Audacity" and is fearful or think this man is radical.  If anything, I'd think the view of him would be accomodationist, as he seems eminently able to argue for the validity of different viewpoints before he argues for his own.

White blue class dems- walk boldly into the future.  We're fixin to show you how down here- early voting everywhere started today...
While Hillary continues on her kitchen sink ugly strategy.
Obama puts food on the Kitchen Table
"Blue-collar workers will never vote for an elitist like Obama."

-------------

Are you kidding?!  While there are many different ways to define "elitism" I think that most people view it from a socioeconomic context. And if this is the case, I think you (and the blue-collar workers to whom you refer) have been bamboozled by the Clintons, McCain and others.

1. Obama has earned less money than either the Clintons or the McCains.  He's not worth 100 million dollars like they are.

2. Obama grew up in a poor environment and even lived in a Third World country for a while.  In contrast, the Clintons own at least two mansions and Hillary grew up in one of the richest suburbs in Chicago.

3. Obama was raised by a single mother; and there were times when he was on food stamps growing up.  This is a lot different from McCain's and Hillary's upbringing.

4. Obama attended public schools, he went to college on scholarship, and he and Michelle only recently got their school loans paid off!  In comparison, Bill and Hill were able to write a check to pay for Chelsea's education.  And when Hillary mismanaged her campaign she was able to write a $5 million check to herself!  HELLO!!!

5.  Oh yeah, and Obama's grandmother still lives in a HUT with no running water and plumbing!

So what EXACTLY makes Obama an elitist?  Is it because he knows that many of us who are struggling in this economy are indeed BITTER?!!!!  Or is it because he eats arugula?
