E. Edwards v. McCain on health care

Posted: Monday, April 28, 2008 1:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
The Center for American progress held a conference call responding to McCain’s health-care roundtable this morning and the impending rollout of his health-care proposal tomorrow. On the call, Elizabeth Edwards responded to the public back-and-forth between her and McCain on whether McCain’s plan would cover people like them -- cancer survivors -- and whether McCain’s Naval health-care coverage has put him out of touch with the trials of the open healthcare market.

On ABC’s “This Week” last Sunday McCain said he would establish a “special Medicaid trust fund set up to help take care for those people who are -- have preexisting conditions.” He then referenced that five chronic diseases account for more than 70 percent of the health-care costs in America, but it was unclear if the special “trust fund” McCain referred to would be intended to address those costs.

If so, Edwards said on the center’s call this afternoon that the costs associated with such a program would be “enormous.”

“If he’s talking about expanding Medicaid to cover chronic conditions…he is talking about the most radical expansion of government health care that has been proposed -- that I know of,” Edwards said.

She added that if McCain was not planning on expanding Medicaid, then such a fund would demand drastic cuts in the services provided to current Medicaid recipients, and if he was planning on neither of these options then “he’s just blowing smoke.”

On the senator’s receipt of Naval healthcare for nearly his entire life, Edwards said McCain “has never been out in the market he’s talking about,” adding, “There are a lot of Americans who are out in the market…and what they’re finding out is that health insurance is unaffordable.”

McCain’s plan involves, as he often says, letting “families make the decisions” on health care, which means he favors an open-market solution intended to allow competition to drive prices down.

I have as much faith in McCain's health care proposal as Cindy does that he won't wet the bed every night.  Meaning, I have no faith at all...
She is backing Clintons health care plan. Smart lady, that Elizabeth Edwards.
yeah, competition always drives prices down; thats how the system works, yeah.  in fact, all this competition has resulted in almost-free health insuran... $%!# ...wait!
So what is she saying? If he provides for preexisting conditions, it will be too expensive? And if he includes it with the current plan, it will result in a reduction of benefits to everyone else? What is her solution?

Is this the DNC sending out surrogates to attack the Republicans while they are trying to get their house in order? Be careful that these same questions aren't bounced back to the nominees position.
We have an open-market health care system and it's a disaster. Obviously McCain (and who ever created this plan for him) are clueless as to the realities that we deal with here in the REAL world.
Who pays for McBush's healthcare? He rejects big government healthcare. He is nothing but a rich, old life time politician, with excellent healthcare and no chance of loosing his job to out sourcing.
Whatever.

Who is the pro-life candiate? That's what I want to know. I like Obama, but his stance on abortion disturbs me. One of the posts here is alwasys urging voters to ignore their concerns about Roe vs. Wade, and vote for jobs. However, how will I explain to my Lord on The Day Of Judgement, that I voted for my own selfishness, rather than take a stance for the weakest of human beings, the unborn? Hillary is more of the same, and she, as well as, McCain are ready to annihilate Muslims.

I'm going to look at Nader's platform on these issues.
How is it that the only Democrat taking on McCain is Elizabeth Edwards.  Why didn't she run for president?
McCain is just trying to show that he's in favor of  "compassionate conservatism." We all know how well THAT has worked out over the past 8 years.
Open market solutions fail for far too many people.  Those people who are, by outdated government standards, obese, have had any pre-existing condition or an increased risk for anything get charged too much for medical insurance or cannot get it at all.

How do I know?  I used to help health care providers connect with potential clients and even I could not get good rates.

We need a government program to bring these companies in line (or better yet get rid of them entirely).  Maybe then we can also control the skyrocketing costs of healthcare.
Nine figure McCain says you don't see him crying about needing health care.
How about McCain's delayed health records??
Might interfere with the Rev. Wright coverage, I guess.
McCain is completely clueless on economic, health care and education policy. If only this got as much media attention as Reverend Wright.  It's such a travesty.  We're going to end up with four more years of Bush policy because the media has to destroy good Democrats with distractions.  It's just like what they did to John Kerry with the SwiftBoats.
I'm going to look at Nader's platform on these issues.

Nader is so pro-abortion, he would allow a mother to "abort" her child all the way until it was 18 years old!
Senator McCrazy....

Can we get the same health care benefits that OUR elected officials enjoy?  I mean, seeing how WE THE PEOPLE pay for it all!  The open market doesn't seem to be working for the US, now does it?  I watched an old episode of House last night and I was struck by something that was said by an administrator,  "Healthcare is a business and I'm going to run it like one."  Nope, doesn't fly!  Healthcare is about people and every last one of the TAXPAYING AMERICANS DESERVE IT!  As soon as you get some reality thru that aged repulican crusted skull, that better chance you'll have.  Right now, everything you say sounds like you're talking out of your behind.
Why can McCain never say how we will pay for these plans? Again, just another spend now, pay later Republican that has plagued our political landscape for decades.

Another version of "compassionate conservativism"... Bush-like proposals with no teth.
Look at the Iraq war. A report said that millions in reconstruction contracts were wasted, yet McCain remains a steadfast supporter of the war.
His proposals are teethless and a way to steal the presidency. Cannot trust another Republican this time.
When the Edwards walk around in their McMansion do they hear the groans of the working poor who can't afford health insurance because of the likes of them?
If you want a good helth care and retirement plan  and life time coverage, become a congressmam, senator or any other elected federal offical.
We know the healthcare stands of all the candidates by now unless one is brain dead.

Let's debate some of Hillary's skeletons.

Hillary has many skeletons still in her closet.

No wonder she is receiving high praise from the likes of Bill Kristol, Sean Hannity, Karl Rove, Rush and the rest of the right wing gang because they know they can beat her.

She is her own worst enemy, not just Bill.

Why is no one covering Paul v. Clinton?

Seems irregularities abound by the judicial branch regarding this case. We need some coverage of this as this really does matter to the campaigns as much or more than the Wright controversy since these involve direct actions of both Bill and Hillary Clinton.

We have mandates here in Pennsylvania for our auto insurance.  Last time I checked having the mandate did not lower cost of auto insurance, its actually increased it.

You have to go after the costs, mandates do not work!
j fl,

If Hillary has such a bang up health care plan, why wasn't it passed in the 90's when she was in charge of it? Hmmmmmmmm?
Pittsburgher, you can be pro-life as well as pro-choice.  I do not believe that the Lord is going to hold you accountable for OTHER PEOPLE'S choices.  On the other hand our country kills innocence day after day after day...
Get the insurance companies and for-profit hospitals and big pharma OUT OF THE LOOP.  They're draining us dry.

Go see Sicko! and find out what it's really all about.

McCain will NEVER take away the big government give-away from the insurance, pharma, and health care corporations.

Neither will Hillary.  Obama will think about it, but probably will not have the chops to make it happen.

The people must rise up and demand change.  People have to stop having the knee-jerk reaction to the conservative mantra of "socialized medicine."

Putting a price on a person's health and, yes, even a person's life, is a travesty.  For the more religious of you, it's a SIN!!  Yet, we allow that to happen every day.
Keep it up Elizabeth Edwards!!  Please your fight for healthcare!  I have seen babies with severe brain damage for want of a $15 dollar penicillin shot, woman dead after childbirth (along with their babies) for want of the inexpensive treatment of a urinary tract infection.... our infant mortality rate is 37 among industrialized modern nations.

Senator McCain's plan does NOTHING to fix this or prevent these tragedies.  This costs ALL of us money -- the brain damaged children require round the clock care usually on the tax payer dime and would you put them out on the street?  Babies???

We need healthcare reform and we needed it yesterday.  Senator Obama can get it for us, if we work beside him and watch the healthcare hearings on C-span and send both our compliments and our outrage to our elected officials.

Senator Clinton still has not explained to us why she turned down the healthcare deal that the Senate worked out (including Senators Dole, Moynihan and Kennedy) that would have at the very least insured some of our uninsured and brought down the cost of premiums overall.

Senator Clinton did write a private letter to Senator Moynihan apologizing for her intransigence on the healthcare issue, but she has not explained this publically.

We cannot afford another healthcare reform failure like the one we saw in the 1990's that left us with the idiocy of HMO's-- the worst combo of socialism and out-of-control capitalistic greed ever invented by man or woman.
yeah.. thats the ticket... vote for Nader... that equates to voting for McCain.
I can only hope Edwards comes to the side of Hillary Clinton .I have supported him in his run and now the only choice for me is Hillary.

WHEN BILL WAS OUR GREAT LEADER MY MONEY WENT A LONG WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why not report that important part MSNBC???

Elizabeth Edwards has PRAISED HILLARY for her healthcare plan and has CRITICIZED OBAMA for leaving people out of his.

An official endorsement from Elizabeth, followed by John, will certainly be welcomed by the Clinton campaign in the days before the NC primary!
Simply looking at the facts, there isn't much mccain knows about anything! I think after 7+ years of having a bumbling idiot in the white house, we don't need or want more of the mcsame.
Hillary now beats McCain in 5 out of 6 polls, and she's TIED w/him in a 7th!
Her average lead is 3 full percentage points!
Obama TIES McCain in 2 polls, and only holds an average 1.5% lead over McCain in 5 others. (That's well within the margin for error.)
More PROOF that Hillary is the most electable Democratic candidate available.
Nominate her, or LOSE.
It's as simple as that!

Oh, yeah we see how the open-market has driven down prices through the years. NOT. The media really needs to do a better job at nailing down exactly what McCain is proposing. Of course with so much focus on the non-issue of Rev. Wright I'm sure you guys don't have enough time to cover this critical story.
Pittsburgher, while I respect your opinion on the immorality of abortion,  the truth is, it doesn't matter where the Presidential candidates stand on this issue. When the Supreme Court justices overturn Roe vs Wade (the court case where it was determined that abortion laws violate a woman's privacy), then it will simply be up to each state to determine the law. In any case, the President will have nothing to do with making abortion illegal. So, I sugest you use another moral criteria to determine your vote, such as, which candidate will make sure all children have health insurance (hint: that would be a Democrat.)
