Wright, front and center

From NBC's Cherelle Kantey and Abby Livingston
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The man who has been at the center of a political controversy for the past six weeks -- Jeremiah Wright -- spoke today in DC and was unrepentant in his remarks.

His speech here at the packed National Press Club, which kicked off a two-day symposium on the African American religious experience, provided mostly context and a history of the black church. He also offered a vigorous defense of himself and said attacks on him were, in fact, attacks on the black church, an institution he said is misunderstood by many whites.

“Maybe now, as that dialogue begins, the religious tradition that has kept hope alive for a people struggling to survive in countless hopeless situations, maybe that religious tradition will be understood, celebrated and even embraced,” Wright said. With an audience that included those from his alma mater, Howard University, there was mostly agreement.

The tone turned more combative during the question-and-answer session. Wright didn’t miss a chance to throw digs at the press corps seated and standing before him and even above him in the balcony of the press club. Outside the press club, a smattering of protestors both in support and against Wright exchanged taunts.

Wright did not mention “Obama” until almost 30 minutes into his opening remarks, but he did not shy away from bringing Obama into his comments during the Q&A. Wright’s appearance brought him back to center stage in this presidential race despite Obama’s efforts to explain his former pastor’s experience in a widely lauded speech on race in America.

“We both know that if Sen. Obama did not say what he said, he would never get elected,” Wright said. “Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites based on polls…. Preachers say what they say because they are pastors. They have to have to have a different person to whom they are accountable. As I said, whether he gets elected or not, I'm still going to have to be answerable to God Nov. 5th and Jan. 21st…. I do what pastors do; he does what politicians do.”

Instead of directly responding to whether his controversial remarks have hurt Obama’s candidacy, Wright instead said criticisms of him are, “not an attack on Jeremiah Wright; it is an attack on the black church.” He added, “It has nothing to do with Sen. Obama; it is an attack on the black church launched by people who know nothing about the African-American religious tradition.”

Wright went on to defend against the accusation that he is unpatriotic, mostly because of the looped excerpted sermon given the weekend after Sept. 11, in which he criticized the U.S.’s role in foreign affairs.

“You cannot do terrorism on other people and expect it never to come unto you,” Wright said. “I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did Cheney serve?”

Wright also jokingly said he’s open to being vice president. "Whether he [Obama] gets elected or not, I'm still going to have to be answerable to God," Wright said. "I do what pastors do. He does what politicians do. I am not running for office. I am hoping to be vice president."

If you don't think this will affect the campaign you are deluding yourself.

The media should be on this issue.  Are BO supporters against the First Amendment?  All I read here is how the press should be censored only to ask questions that are acceptable to "the campaign".  Do not bother the great one with these trivialities.  The problem is that BO supporters hear an inspirational speech and ask no questions about how change is to be achieved or what exactly will be changed. The more sceptical of us have heard this before and try and find the answers.  Unfortunately, due to BO's razor thin resume, we cannot look at his past record with any grate hope of predicting the future.  So what we have is his past life, his associations both business and personal.  From what we have seen so far he has rejected his mothers race and looked to find his identity in "Dreams of his Father", and Reverend Wright's teachings.  This does not impugn his integrity but it does show a bias towards certain beliefs.  His pastor's and his wife's comments show a disparagement towards this country that many find offensive.  This may be acceptable in circles in which he currently moves, as reinforced by the Ayres comments, but I think it would not be part of mainstream America.  Now add to this that his pastor of twenty years says "He says what he has to say".  I read this as he is telling you what you want hear but is is not what he believes.

I know this will not change any minds but this is why this issue should be followed up.  Please stop trying to gag the press just because you do not like the questions.
The loser is Back. I am a Black man this guy does not speak for me.  Lets be very Clear.

Go Hillary!
God Bless Reverend Wright.  He tells it like it is. Where are all the Ron Paul supporters who applauded his use of the term "blowback"?  Paul spoke the truth too.  When will America wake up?
Still no First Read on Paul v Clinton, huh?

More hateful and racist speech from an old egomaniac that won't give up the spot light even if it means blowing Obama's chance of winning.

Obama and his Rev.and his wife "first time proud of america" can all sit in the church together... the rest of us in the " US of kkk" now know Hillery is right only she or John McCain care for ALL of America
We are missing the point. Wright should NOT change our focus. Obama has said he is opposed to some statements, which he did not say himself. Despite Negative Attacks on Obama see...

''Chicago, IL – Today, United States Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) endorsed Barack Obama for president, citing his ability to rise above the issues that divide us, end the war in Iraq, bring universal health care, and make America energy independent''

United America
Hello, Obama, I would like to introduce you to my friend, Macaca, as in, this is your "Macaca moment."  Enjoy!
“We both know that if Sen. Obama did not say what he said, he would never get elected,” Wright said. “Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites based on polls…."

What a great stereotype.  At least we now know where the "Hillary will say and do anything to get elected" line came from...... Now it seems we may add Barach!
Wright wants to be Vice president.  OMG!

This man is a nut case.

How could Obama sit under his racist preaching for 20 years?

It is over for Obama. This is his "scream" moment. Whether or not Obama secretly harbors these views or not, his judgement--and campaign message of post-racial unity--has been seriously undermined. Who chooses such a person to officiate at one's wedding and baptize one's church, not to mention attend his sermons for 20 years?  Barack must share Wright's views. He's a typical politician, as Wright himself has said. Who is this Obama guy? What does he believe in? After 15 months,we really don't know. Or do we?

WOW!
I'm Catholic, and I'm surprised and upset that Hagee doesn't get the same treatment for the statements that he made regarding my my faith. I'm upset, and mad that he gets a pass regarding this.
Is it because Rev. Wright is black? Is my religon not important enough for Hagee to apologize?
I'm so amazed at how the media is so one-sided.
I hope Andrea Mitchell is proud of herself...45 mins on Rev. Wright.  Some of the people being interviewed suggested that the media needs to let go.  How deep into the gutter does MSNBC want to go???  Did Bill or MSNBC play the race card and continues to play the race card?

Joe Watkins needs to practice what he preaches.  I guess its alright to preach on Sunday then attach on Monday, but what would expect from a Republican?

Bob, Chicago
I would like to know how the Kennedy's who are supporting Obama feel when they hear Rev. Wright making fun of both JFK and Ted Kennedy.

I can't imagine that the Kennedy's aren't pissed of hearing their family members and more importantly a US President and a US Senator made fun of by Rev. Wright.

I know, I know, Rev. Wright is Rev. Wright, he's not Barack Obama.

Like Rev Wright said "Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability."  He also said the he [Wright] is a pastor and Obama is a politician.

That's funny because I thought that Obama was selling himself as anything but, a politician.
I cannot believe that Obama hasn't heard any of Wright's rants before!  Given the fact that Rev. Wright couldn't contain himself this weekend or today seems to indicate that his "rants" are the norm.  If that is true then there is NO WAY that Obama hasn't heard crazy things coming from his pastors pulpit!
OBAMA 08
Distance Barack Distance....
Good judgement now demands distance....

This is new, this requires distance....

Your race and religion does not demand loyalty to the point of destruction of your own positive message...

To the moon, Alice
"I am not running for office."

I guess what I learned these last few days is Rev. Wright is keeping to the ideals set out by Jesus. Not to the ideals set out by people in this country who continue to look the other way.

Good for him. He's just doing what he believes is right in his heart. If you don't want to hear the truth, don't listen.

"Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, 'Stay the course'

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned 'Titanic".
             Lee Iacocca

By the way, when is Hillary Clinton going to apologize for the antics of her husband when he was in the White House?
i thought that obama was allegedly going to be a uniter not a divider(wow that sounds so familiar)it is so hard to buy this view that hes a good christian when his pastor doesnt seem like the kind that teaches love, personal accountability and seems so racist or seperatist .like my christian pastor would never judge anyone or our country with such didain.by the way to be a real christian means to be christlike thats what christian means.like even 3rd and 4th grade christian kids in our childrens ministry do when needing to make a decision ask"what would jesus do?",not whats being done here.
You hear that Obamabots? Senator Obama is just another politician.

Wright said: “Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability. Preachers say what they say because they are pastors."
I like what Rev. Wright had to say.  He should sue all of you for defamation of character.  I like Obama even more.  I am white,Jewish, female and over 50.  I would never consider voting for clinton.  Obama is winning and there is a reason for that.  He is the very best candidate in this primary.
This guy has the biggest ego I have ever seen.  I hope he does not take out Obama, who was very kind in dealing with him in his speech in Philadelphia.
