NC governor to endorse Clinton

Posted: Monday, April 28, 2008 5:21 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli, NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
Mike Easley, two-term North Carolina governor in his final year, will endorse Hillary Clinton at a rally in Raleigh tomorrow, according to sources in the governor's office and sources close to the Clinton campaign.

Easley is a superdelegate, bringing Clinton's superdelegate lead to 265-242 (288 supers are uncommitted).

PLEDGED: Obama 1,491-1,334
OVERALL: Obama 1,733-1,599

*** UPDATE *** NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann adds the following for context on Easley's endorsement:

Gov. Easley will be the second NC superdelegate to go for Clinton. Easley was long suspected of being in the Clinton camp, but many believed he would stay neutral, as -- like many of the state's public officials -- he might risk alienating the state's large black population.

Suspicions of his allegiance were all but confirmed earlier this month when Easley publicly criticized Barack Obama for declining CBS's invitation to debate in North Carolina.

Local experts often draw parallels between Easley's early career, which began with a failed run at federal office and a stint as attorney general, and President Bill Clinton's. Easley was heavily recruited as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, and it's widely believed that he could have been a formidable challenger to Elizabeth Dole. But Easley declined to run, famously saying that he wouldn't like a job that entailed "sitting in meetings" all day.

Although he enjoys fairly strong support in the state, Easley tends not to be described as a hard worker. Some politicos in the state quipped that he would stay on the sidelines because following through with an endorsement would be too much work for the laid-back legislator.

He was recently on the hotseat for violations of public records transparency by his press office, which reportedly requested that some e-mail traffic in and out of the governor's office be deleted. The man Easley appointed to oversee the resulting campaign for reform offered the capital press corps a good laugh when he was quoted as admitting that he didn't know how to "cut on a computer."

Good for the govornor---wonder how many death threats he will get from the cult of Obama?Or how many AAs will  call him racist?
This NC Gov must be an idiot... He knows his state is falling to Obama and yet he wants to endors Clinton anyway...Pathetic reasoning.....
Apparently the "drip drip" isn't just for Obama. Way to go Hillary...keep em coming.
That's brave Easley. Endorse Hillary, then  scurry off, with your hind quarters tucked, like a coon that's been caught rummaging through the garbage, and retire.
Obamabots start bashing in

He must have watched Rev. Wright's speech.
I always knew that when the media support dwindled for Obama and people began to know just how unqualified he was, the delegates would begin to use their heads.  Obamaites can continue to say how devisive, how hated Hillary is but the facts show that at least 50% of the people are voting for her and most feel that she can beat McCain.  Put your brains in the sand Obamaites, continue to spout your hatred but in the end Hillary will be the nominee because the democrats want to win.
Must be a man of conviction...for that he deserves everybody's respect!!

And who knows, there might be a surprise in store for Senator Obama's campaign in NC!  This could be BIG!!!
Notice it says he is in his "final year" as Governor.  Good thing, because after his state goes overwhelming for Obama, he may have had a hard time getting voted back into office.
Wow.  Things just got alot more interesting in North Carolina.  I think this means at least a single digit win for Obama.  Gov. Easley is a very popular governor and his endorsement will carry alot of weight in the state.  If Elizabeth Edwards would make public her endorsement of Hillary, she would have a great chance of winning North CArolina.
Easley to his constituents;

Take that, you uppity anarchists.

Ah, see ya. I'm outt'a here!
he is trying to protect himself from the clinton attack machine once he leaves office and looks for anothewr job
Congratulations HilLiar. What happens if Obama wins NC massively? The governor is made to look as idiot as he is.
BTW Chuck, why do Hillary supporters call Obama supporters a cult? Is there something seriously wrong with their brains -- are they filled with racial hatred and just chose to overlook their own candidate's deliberate and repeated political gaffes? Or, are they too idiotic to acknowledge realities?
They can hate Obama if they so wish, but hate him for what? I don't hate Hillary, but I reject her lack of integrity and honesty to lead our nation.
James....  Don't forget, a LOT of people owe the Clintons favors.  Some will put the country before the Clintons.  Others are too deeply involved with the corruption.  And then there are those who simply do not want to be branded as a Judas, or Turncoat, by the Clintons.
To James in TN: Where did you get off...just why in the hell would Mr. Easley not vote for the person he thinks can win come November...that is the role of a superdelegate...by your logic...Kennedy and Kerry should change their votes to Clinton. You really shouldn't call someone an Idiot when your statement is...idiotic.
Sweet!!!

Go Hillary!!!
Hillary is simply a power hungry Hypocrite.

If Obama and her roles were reversed, with him trailing in delegates, there is no doubt she would be screaming for him to drop out to allow her to begin competing against McCain.

But no, in her self-induced delusional state she truly believes the Presidency is her right - not the privilege to serve at the will of the people.

She agreed that the official measure of winning is by delegates, not popular vote - she lied.
She agreed that MI delegates would not be in the official count - she lied.
She agreed that FL delegates would not be in the official count - she lied.

And now that she has no way of winning other than through back-room dealings with party elites, she is willing to put this nation through four more years of Republican political purgatory so she can run again in four years.

Don't lie to yourself - everyone knows deep down that she is willing to tear Obama apart to ensure he loses in November to ensure she can try again in 2012.

She does not respect the American public, she only uses them for her own purposes. We've seen this behavior in Dick Cheney and do you really want this trait in our next president?

IMHO she is has degraded herself to the point of no longer being worthy of being elected. This is not a loss for her, but a loss that so many Americans continues to accept individuals behving like such as their leaders.
What an idiot. What did she promise him? Sure makes you wonder.
With Bingaman Endorsement, Obama Takes Senate Support Lead
By Jonathan Weisman
Sen. Barack Obama officially pulled ahead today in the scramble for endorsements from colleagues in the U.S. Senate, thanks to Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico.

Never one of the Senate's most high-profile members, Bingaman now has a claim to political fame: He put Obama over the top after his long slog to catch Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who had a head start in winning the support of her peers. Obama now has 14 endorsements to Clinton's 13.

Obama will also get the vote of Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), who has not officially endorsed him but said he will support Obama at the convention in deference to his state's voters. Clinton has a similar pledge from Sen. Barbara Boxer of California.

"Our nation faces a daunting number of critical challenges: reasserting America's leadership in the world, meeting our needs for energy independence, addressing global warming, making healthcare accessible and affordable, positioning our economy to effectively compete globally, and extricating ourselves from the war in Iraq, to name a few," Bingaman wrote in his endorsement announcement. "To make progress, we must rise above the partisanship and the issues that divide us to find common ground. We must move the country in a dramatically new direction."

Of course, Clinton can still flip the endorsement balance back in her favor: Not counting Clinton, Obama, and the Senate's two Democratic-leaning independents, 18 Democratic senators still have yet to endorse.

A full list of endorsements by senators follows the jump:

Obama:

Sen. Bob Casey (Pa.)
Sen. Kent Conrad (N.D.)
Sen. Chris Dodd (Conn.)
Sen. Byron Dorgan (N.D.)
Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.)
Sen. Tim Johnson (S.D.)
Sen. Edward Kennedy (Mass.)
Sen. John Kerry (Mass.)
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.)
Sen. Patrick Leahy (Vt.)
Sen. Claire McCaskill (Mo.)
Sen. Ben Nelson (Neb.)
Sen. Jay Rockefeller (W.Va.)
Sen. Jeff Bingaman (N.M.)

Clinton:

Sen. Evan Bayh (Ind.)
Sen. Maria Cantwell (Wash.)
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (Calif.)
Sen. Daniel Inouye (Hawaii)
Sen. Blanche Lincoln (Ark.)
Sen. Bob Menendez (N.J.)
Sen. Barbara Mikulski (Md.)
Sen. Patty Murray (Wash.)
Sen. Bill Nelson (Fla.)
Sen. Mark Pryor (Ark.)
Sen. Charles Schumer (N.Y.)
Sen. Debbie Stabenow (Mich.)
Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.)

Two senators, Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, and Barbara Boxer of California, have said they will vote at the convention for the candidates chosen by their states, Obama for Feingold, Clinton for Boxer.
James TN, both Senators Kerry and Kennedy are supporting Obama even though Massachusetts overwhelmingly voted for Clinton.

The tide is turning.
It does not matter. Hillary cannot catch Obama in pledged delegates or the popular vote. The NC Governor is endorsing someone who has already lost.
Excuse me, James from TN - New Mexico went for Hillary and both Gov. Richardson and now, Sen. Bingaman went for Obama.  And of course, Sens. Kerry and Kennedy went for Obama and Hillary won MA!  None of these decisions are pathetic!  Every superdelegate the has the choice and the responsibility to do what they want!  Go Hillary!!
So when is the media going to fact check and report on whether it is true or a lie that Clinton received $10 million in small donations after the PA primary as she claimed.  This is definitely an issue of character and is relevant to judging the qualifications for president.
Would love to see him take the stage and announce that he really supports Obama.  Being in his last year of his second term he should be safe enough, question is ... is he brave enough to take a bold stand.
I bet this guy buys the expired meat at the grocery store too...
Good for the Governor. Getting this country back on track is more important than a populatiry contest. Hillary Clinton is not my favorite person in all aspects, but I am confident that she can move the country in the right direction.
To James
I cpold say the same for John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and gov Bill Richardson. Their states went for Hillary and they chose Obama. Why do we think that people can not think? They select who they want when they want just like you and I do...
Go Hillary! Keep your eye on the prize.....the American People!
BIG BOOST for Hillary!

Go Hillary in '08!

I'm surprised that MSNBC would report any pro-Hillary news. MSNBC has been a storefront mouthpiece for the Obama campaign since Dec. 2007.
he's in his final term and doesn't have anything to lose.

NObama... its not any different than people calling AA's racist because they tend to vote for Obama... it's what alot of whites in the rust belt are doing for Clinton, isn't it?
Why do you have inconsistent information.  The MSNBC politics webpage says Obama has 243 superdelegates.  Did he lose one since webpage was updated about 2 hours ago and when you posted this blog?
He would not be supporting her if he knew that she was going to be on trial for fraud. MSNBC please report on Peter Paul V. Clinton. On Friday the judge declared Hillary would not have to testify until after the November election. www.paulvclinton.com
WHY ARE YOU HIDING THIS STORY!!
to James from TN. They are all nuts! Clinton won Mass but Kennedy endorsed Obama; Clinton won New Mexico but Richardson endorsed Obama. Apparently there are more nuts on the Obama side.
When you think of the Clinton machine and that Obama has beat them, it is amazing. I am so proud of him. What do you think, the Clinton's would do anything to win and are pulling out all the punches. They know they cannont win, they are just being sore losers.
NObama-MI You want to support a lieing sack of @#@% such as Hillary...thats your right but please keep your racist views to yourself.
Rise Hillary Rise !!!!!!!!!!!Yes She Will!!!!!!!!

Thank you Governor Easley.

Hillary 08
"two-term North Carolina governor in his final year".  Enough said.
"wonder how many death threats he will get from the cult of Obama?Or how many AAs will  call him racist?"
--NObama-MI

Zero, Zero is what you are batting. Go peddle your speculative divisiveness somewhere else. The reverend Wright is the one receiving death threats from your friends. That's a fact jack.
Tick, tock, tick, tock....

Don't get crazy about the superdelegates.  There will be one for each candidate from this point forward or a little more for Obama to catch up.  The DNC does not want the Superdelegates to choose the nominee, so it will eventually be split down the middle.  It will also make little sense as to why some are going the way they do so that nobody can claim a bias.  It just happens that it was Governor Easley's turn.

Just be aware that it will all happen before the last primary election.  We will see a candidate reach 2025 and, in the true Democrat way it will be fair.
The Governor has that right. I'm sure his constiuents will vote the opposite. For those who say Bill Richardson should vote Hillary because New Mexico went Hillary (by less than 1%)- will they say the NC Governor should vote for Obama? As far as death threats go- you Hillary folks sure are a hateful bunch aren't you?! GET A LIFE-
This is good news....I love it, by the way im am black 23 and i support clinton....Obama is the establishment, although he says that he isnt.... what is worse is that most of his voters barely know him Barry Barack Obama....best believe im one of the voters who will go for Mccain if Obama is nominated...take a poll on that
Political suicide; If Obama wins this guy will not get re-elected!!!! TALK ABOUT STUPID!
James, you must be an idiot. Clinton won TN by 54% to 41%.

It feels like an atomic bomb has hit American politics.
Go Hillary! We count on you! Chris - CA
The tide is turning.

Hillary '08
If HC was leading BO at this point of the race their would not be a race. The current power structure does not not want to cede power under any circumstances...it almost seems like a conspiracy. The media, pundits push stories to the fore that are not relevant to the "Kitchen table" issues, and use fear propaganda effectively to tear down candidates who are authentic, and prop up candidates that represent status quo, gridlock politics that benefit the wealthy and well connected only.

The solution is simple, Clinton President, Obahma V.P. that gives Obahma eight years experience in running this country, Clinton will use him to the utmost and that then gives the Democrats eight more years of power with experienced President Obahma, that would be a combined 16 years.  Do It.
James - wait until Wright-gate Part II gets in the polls.  This is awesome news for Clinton!  Mass went to Clinton but Kerry, Patrick, and Kennedy endorsed Obama.  New Mexico went for Clinton and Richardson endorsed Obama. Spare us.
