NC governor to endorse Clinton

Posted: Monday, April 28, 2008 5:21 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli, NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
Mike Easley, two-term North Carolina governor in his final year, will endorse Hillary Clinton at a rally in Raleigh tomorrow, according to sources in the governor's office and sources close to the Clinton campaign.

Easley is a superdelegate, bringing Clinton's superdelegate lead to 265-242 (288 supers are uncommitted).

PLEDGED: Obama 1,491-1,334
OVERALL: Obama 1,733-1,599

*** UPDATE *** NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann adds the following for context on Easley's endorsement:

Gov. Easley will be the second NC superdelegate to go for Clinton. Easley was long suspected of being in the Clinton camp, but many believed he would stay neutral, as -- like many of the state's public officials -- he might risk alienating the state's large black population.

Suspicions of his allegiance were all but confirmed earlier this month when Easley publicly criticized Barack Obama for declining CBS's invitation to debate in North Carolina.

Local experts often draw parallels between Easley's early career, which began with a failed run at federal office and a stint as attorney general, and President Bill Clinton's. Easley was heavily recruited as a candidate for the U.S. Senate, and it's widely believed that he could have been a formidable challenger to Elizabeth Dole. But Easley declined to run, famously saying that he wouldn't like a job that entailed "sitting in meetings" all day.

Although he enjoys fairly strong support in the state, Easley tends not to be described as a hard worker. Some politicos in the state quipped that he would stay on the sidelines because following through with an endorsement would be too much work for the laid-back legislator.

He was recently on the hotseat for violations of public records transparency by his press office, which reportedly requested that some e-mail traffic in and out of the governor's office be deleted. The man Easley appointed to oversee the resulting campaign for reform offered the capital press corps a good laugh when he was quoted as admitting that he didn't know how to "cut on a computer."

Brave man, since he knows the Obamas devotees are a rabid bunch. How dare one not see him as "America's hope to repair their souls" - in the words of his mom Michelle?

You can't blame people for switching now since even Obama's spiritual advisor of 20 years Rev.Wright is now throwing him under the bus. Rev. Wright is defending himself because he knows that Obama's views are the same as his, but he alone is getting blamed while Obama is canonized as America's once in a lifetime candidate!!!

If he is too scared to debate Hillary one on one, without moderators - how can we expect him to face John McCain, let alone, all the pressures of being the leader of the world's only super power.

Does he honestly think getting a Democratic version of a Dick Cheney will save him.
Good for the govornor---wonder how many death threats he will get from the cult of Obama?Or how many AAs will  call him racist?
NObama-MI (Sent Monday, April 28, 2008 5:27 PM)

The Govenor made a decision. No one is calling anyone a racist.  Well except for you. I have seen whoever this "Nobama" on many blogs just spewing hate language.   And to call Obama supporters a cult is divisive language and is an insult.

So I guess your devotion to Clinton is not cult like?

This kind of language is what is tearing the Democrats apart.

Democrat in the White House no matter who's the nominee.  08
The governor see's the writing on the wall...if the dems want the white house Hillary is the way to go. No way will Obama be able to win over McCain. The voters are just now learning about Obama's history. From the start Hillary has had the knowledge, experience and backbone to get the job done and done right. Please vote for Hillary she has proven herself to fight for us. He can not win.
I NEVER want to hear anyone again talk about how racists whites are. The white vote is split between Clinton & Obama - but the black vote is 92%+ for Obama - DUH you don't think it has anything to do with the color of his skin?
I vote for the person based on experience and what their plans are that have been clearly outlined.
Obama is a fantastic speaker and has very moving speeches but I want someone that is going to deliver. I want solutions not promises.
The Governor of NC is not caving in based on color. He picked who he thought was the best canidate. Despite the fact that Clinton is behind in the Polls of NC - hopefully this will help narrow the gap.
Wake up NC & IN !!!!
Although he isn't running for anything this isn't political suicide for him.  But I find it strange that he is endorsing the canidate that if you look inside the boring numbers, can't win.  The best option would be to not do anything and wait.
Thank you, NC Gove. ! Why not choose Hillary? I love the Clinton years when I could find a job easily after graduating from college ... and peace ... and ...
Governor Easley knows that Senator Clinton is the candidate most able to beat Sen. John McCain. When is everyone going to wake up, we need this party united to be able to go against the republicans.
WAY TO GO HILLARY!!! :-)

THE TIDE IS TURNING YOUR WAY...KEEP FIGHTING.
This shows that regardless of whoever has the popular vote, superdelegates might vote against them. The remaining superdelegates will vote for Hillary Clinton.
Good for you Mike.  How could ANY remaining superdelegate go for Obama after this buffoon Wright continues to make a total fool out of himself--and the good reverand is no Rich Little either.  All along we've been hearing about Obama's superior judgment (to excuse his obvious lack of credentials); well, what does it say about your "judgment" if you consider this trainwreck as your mentor.
Wow....the Cult Of Obama must be in an uproar because a "superdelegate" is supporting someone other than King Obama. I guess if its not a vote of support for their King then something is wrong with the person going against the "Messiah". I hope he doesn't get death threats BUT that just a "HOPE". Hell....I may get one for saying I support the Governor of North Carolina for supporting the next President Of The United States. Go Hillary 08
Easley must be CRAZY!!!
Hillary needs to drop out so that she can lose gracefully, which she is NOT!!!
james in TN your an idiot he is a man with a brain people can see a good thing and are man enough stand up for what he believes i
I dont want him dead or do i think he is a racist. But he is an idiot for supporting lies and ignorance over hope a honesty.

Obama/Richardson 08
I am sick and tired of the Pro-Obama Media (and you know who you are and we the people know who you are too) providing biased reporting.  Why don't you all just admit up front that you are incapable of being journalists and giving unbiased reports. Its disgusting.

Even in this report, you tried to get your dig about the Governor being on his last term to try and devalue his endorsement of Clinton as you would NEVER have done if it was an Obama endorsement.

You do everything to minimize Hillary's successes and tout Obama's everything.

On Chris Matthews yesterday the title was "Advice to Obama".   How sickening.

All the wind you DC MEdia folks put behind Obama's sales hasn't worked sufficiently and the people are speaking up despite all the media hipe for Obama.

It is truly amazing.

You are not going to influence the people of NC or INDIANA and once again the people will rise to pick the most qualified, most electable candidate!!

Congragulations to all those few media folks who have ad the guts to tell the truth and report in an unbiased fashion.  By unbiased I don't mean pro-Hillary I mean unbiased.
NObama-MI Get a real job! HRC is the second coming of G-DUB(George Bush) & J. McCain, a first lady should know her place. Do the right thing HRC, go off into the sunset with "class" like all the first ladies before you...Besides, are you really trying to prove something to Bill Clinton?
obama supporters aren't the death-threat sort of people. but thanks for playing. then again, you're in michigan - what else should i expect
I'm disappointed with his decision but we are all within our rights to support anyone we choose for whatever reasons we deem appropriate. And as HRC has pointed out, a SD CAN change their endorsement right up to the nomination, so perhaps his position may change....
I have just 1 question... Peter/Paul /Trial???

When will the MSM grow a set and report on this??

Middle aged white woman for Obama!
Alright Gov. Easley!
You've made a wise choice!
Everybody visit www.hillaryclinton.com to send her to victory!!!
This NC Gov must be an idiot... He knows his state is falling to Obama and yet he wants to endors Clinton anyway...Pathetic reasoning.....
*******
James in TN:  Maybe it's a foreboding of more to things to come.
his name shoud be easyly  you couldn't wait till he anounce it ? white house press scretary job promised ?
In other words this man is a crook!!!! No wonder he is supporting Hillary!!!!
a bit slow arnt you another superdelegate has endorsed obama, but we hear about clinton !!!!!!!!!!!! get with it ,stop trying to slant the story .
"He was recently on the hotseat for violations of public records transparency by his press office, which reportedly requested that some e-mail traffic in and out of the governor's office be deleted. =====================================================

Why is it that I'm not surprised that he endorsed Clinton??? LOL!!!

his name shoud be easyly  you couldn't wait till he anounce it ? white house press scretary job promised ?
He probably doesn't want his name added to the list of 47 people that have been murdered over the years that have had associations with the Clintons in one way or another.
This endorsement is like Bill Cliton pardoning Marc Rich at the end of his term. The guy's on his way out and probably wants to get on the Clinton lobbyist payroll of negotiating big money western contracts for 3rd world tyrants.

This is exactly what turns people off about the Clintons and their cajoling.
Obviously, Gov. Easley can see that Sen. Obama has no experience in running a country club let alone a country. Supporting Sen. Clinton is the right way and only way to go.
Well, like Rendell, NC Governor Easley understands that we need a President not just for black america, but will represent all of America and fight for it instead of play it like a game of tiddlywinks.

Go Hillary 2008
Come on the clut of Obama he's a fellow American don't think it's a cult.

I do think think however that this is a great endorsement for Hillary Clinton.

GO Hillary 08
News media you need to wake up - your type of bias reporting and twisting trivial things into major news is not helping the crisis America is facing as we speak.  America is on the verge of bankruptcy and you the media are playing the fiddle while "Rome" burns.  You can do better than that, shame on you.
Congratulations------Obama for POTUS
The tide is turning!  I agree NObama-MI.  Congressman Clyburn is already gearing up for a repeat of his South Carolina  strategy.
I'm glad to see that Gov. Easley is not drinking the media-tainted Obama Kool-Aid. He knows that Hillary is the best candidate to win over those key crucial voting blocs that we need to carry us to victory in November.
Big! Just like the support Hillary had in Pennsylvania, she now has in North Carolina.
Easley, as per your up-state is another sleazy get for Clinton. Why are the supers who back Hillary always on the grimmy side?
