Obama addresses Rev. Wright issue

Posted: Monday, April 28, 2008 6:09 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WILMINGTON, NC -- In a hastily arranged press conference next to the whirring engine of his 757 Monday afternoon, Obama spoke about his controversial former pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Wright is back in the news today after delivering a fierce defense of himself and the ideas he has put forth in which he argued that mainstream America did not understand the black church.

Obama did not address the content of Wright's remarks to the National Press Club in Washington today, instead restating his view that he found some of the pastor's remarks offensive but saying the man whose church he has attended for 20 years had a right to speak his own mind.

"He does not speak for me. He does not speak for the campaign, and so, he may make statements in the future that don’t reflect my values or concerns," the senator told reporters who strained to hear him on the loud tarmac. At one point, he had to pause as a helicopter flew by.

Obama said he would remain focused on the issues voters were asking him about, like how to deal with lost jobs and high gas prices. He said voters had not mentioned Wright to him. He argued, as he did earlier today, that his rivals were trying to distract the American people and make this election about him.

"Obviously, what people like John McCain are now doing is, not being on the strong side of the issues, have decided they're gonna try to make this campaign about me," he said.

He said voters could separate him from his associates.

"I think people will understand that I am not perfect,” he said, “and that, you know, there are gonna be … folks in my past like Rev. Wright that may cause them some concern, but that ultimately … my 20 years of service and the values that I've written about and spoken about and promoted are their values and what they're concerned about and that's what this camp has been about and what its going to continue to be about.”

Obama also reacted to a Supreme Court ruling today that would allow states to require voters show a valid photo ID at the polls, arguing that it discourages turnout and that there was no evidence of voter fraud to justify requiring such measures.

"There are a lot of seniors who don't have photo IDs,” he said. “There are a lot of low-income people that don't have photo IDs. The fact that they may cost money means that some people will choose not get them and are less likely to vote. I disagree with the decision, but we're going to do everything that we can in our campaign, and I trust that not only the Democratic Party but fair-minded Republicans are gonna do whatever they can at the state levels to make sure that people are able to exercise the franchise."

Eight years ago: I will vote for the guy I can drink beer with. Also the other guy has a jewish vp candidate.

Four years later the economy is on the down turn and Osama is still at large and war in Iraq is in shambles and people cannot afford health care.

Four years ago: Kerry is too elitist and is wife is foreign. I will stick with my friendly white guy I can drink beer with for president.

Today, people are out of their homes and foreclosures are on the rise. Oil is $4 per gallon and the economy is in recession. Health care is unafforable and schools don't have money and people cannot find jobs.

Today: I will vote for the person who can fix these issues not based on skin color or gender but on the issues. Wake up America. Vote on the issues.
Obama is shoulder to shoulder with Wright. They both come from the same extreme radical left wing of the Chicago Democratic party. Obama can no more disown Wright, as he could disown himself. They both believe the very same things.
It feels like an atomic bomb has hit our politics.
spin it which ever way you want Obama.

It doesn't matter. You will NEVER be president of the USA.
The only reasonable, possible explanation to the Wright/Obamba debacle is that Obama agreed with his mentor for 20 YEARS.  That is why Wright feels free to give his Anti American Speeches while Obama shies away from denouncing him.  Obama cannot denounce nor refused Wright because the truth will come out.  Wright is Obama’s true political liability.  Expect the following, Wright will :
1- WRITE A BOOK.
2- CONTINUE TO GIVE NATIONAL SPEECHES.
3- HE WILL CHARGE FOR THOSE NATIONAL SPEECHES.
4- HE WILL APPEAR IN MORE COMMENTARY PROGRAMS.
5- DONT BE SURPRICE IF WRIGHT HIMSELF RUNS FOR SENATOR.
6- THERE WILL BE A WRIGHT IDIALOGY BASED ON HIS POLITICAL ANGLE.
7- OBAMA WILL NOT DISASSOCIATE, NOR RENOUNCED REV. WRIGHT.

SO ASK YOURSELF WHY?  Why CANT THE NEXT POSSIBLE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DENOUNCE AND RENOUNCE HIS CRAZY, ANTI-AMERICAN PASTOR?    EASY; WRIGHT KNOWS TOO MUCH.
I like Obama's answer, that the other campaigns, not being on the strong side of the issues, are trying to make it about him. True, one's character comes out in responding to adversity like that, and that's important. But Obama is right when he said the voter's can separate and want to hear about health care, economy and gas prices, all tied in to a failed Administration and it's ill-advised war.

Those who worry about Rev. Wright's remarks were never going to vote for Obama anyway.

Obama will not deny any of Wrights rants. He can't. If he did, he'd lose the extreme left wing liberals that are his base. They believe what Wright is saying is true. Barack better too, otherwise they won't vote for him.
That's right, Sen. Obama.  Focus on the issues, and let Rev. Wright continue to bask in his selfish newfound "Hollywood" fame.

OBAMA, 2008!
Reverend Wright is showing his true colors he is an egomaniac and cares not a whit for Obama or his church he is hellbent on furthering the fortunes of Reverend Wright.
The Democrats disenfranchise entire states, and now they complain that you actually have to have a small piece of proof of who you are before you vote? Democrats are insane.
Obama you have to many years of Wright in your head. What on earth makes you think we can trust you? You said he was as important to you as your Grandmother. The best thing you can do for the country is drop out. We need a dem in office and one who cares about us all...and that ain't you. Hillary is what we need and want.
Barack, and Rev. Wright are having the whip laid on their backs, from white Christians, because their church did'nt have enough 'yessa massa', bowed head, and lowered gaze demeanor in Wright's sermons.
Still has the integrity not to throw Wright under the bus even when it would be understood and forgiven.

I am not sure where Montana state law is on voter ID's but I am on my way down to Obama head quarters to volunteer to assist elderly or other at risk citizens in getting a valid ID so they will not be deliberately disenfranchised by a right wing kangaroo supreme court. My country needs a shower. it is starting to stink.
Good, Barack gives this about the amount of attention that this goofy distraction deserves. Let the reporters strain to report another hourly update about his former pastor.
Hello mass media...? Nobody cares about this.
I also wouldn't care about all the wacky things Bill Clinton has been saying, except for the slight difference -- as Mitt Romney said -- "Bill will be roaming the White House with nothing to do."
Will Bill invite Monica back for some more "not sexual relations?"
Will Hillary make James Carville secretary of state?
Will Chelsea the *hedge fund manager* become Sec'y of Finance?

Obama's ready to slam dunk McCain.
I'm mad as hell, and there's nothing you can do about

-Jeremiah Wright
It is a campaign about Obama. Just who is this guy? He sure has a lot of relationships with a lot of left wing loons. For a man that did nothing for his home city of Chicago (the number of shootings there in the last week exceeds 50), to his state of Illinois (the state has been bankrupted by him and his fellow  Democrats), to a man that has zero accomplihments as a Senator, no one knows what this man stands for or has done in his life. He's nothing more then a creation of the media.
2 wars, $4 gas, food prices through the roof, unemployment rising and this is all MSNBC has talked about all day!  I can't watch this anymore--God help us if we let the media decide what's important in this election! (my husband is thrilled-he gets to go back to watching Bonanza reruns)
Do you see where siding with white folks, and their false, white Jesus has gotten you Senator Obama?

Left in the lurch.
Senator Obama said what needed to be said. He has said time and time again that he does not agree with Rev. Wright. This campaign is not about Rev. Wright and the press needs to give it a rest. Senator Obama has the best plan for the economy, healthcare, gas prices, etc. That is what I want to hear and he will get more support.

Obama for President!!!
He said voters could separate him from his associates.

"I think people will understand that I am not perfect,” he said, “and that, you know, there are gonna be … folks in my past like Rev. Wright that may cause them some concern,

Sorry, Barry, having a problem with the separating part.  One, maybe, you'd get a break.  Your problem is that you've aligned and associated yourself with so many shady people.  Just like your mother told you "You're known by the company you keep."  As far as McCain making it about you, I'm sure you'll have time to talk about the issues if you'll agree to debate him!  As far as making it about you, YOU are wanting to hold the most important job in the world.  Why is it YOU can't understand people DO care who you are, what you've done and who your friends/associates are.  Luckily, your wife has shown us what she is with her own anti-American statements.  After listening to Wright who today said the US is a terrorist nation, it's easy to see where your wife got her ideas.  Guess she was in church some days you weren't there, or it was before your hearing got repaired, or you slept through church.  Get this, Barry, when YOU SEPARATE yourself from all these shady people, then maybe other people can do the same.  In the meanwhile, you keep embracing, denying, dancing around the problem.  And, by the way, Barry, why does the leader of HAMAS have a link on your fundraising page?
Christians eating their own? No. Just White Christians eating Negra Christians. They don't count, do they?
Rev. Jeremiah Wright's is retiring at 68 and is still fighting the 1960’s fight against the Government.

He still in the pass, also John McCain is 71 running for President to control the Government.

Barack Obama is trying to Change the Government, not fight it or control it.
I understand Senator Obama's reluctance to distance himself from his pastor. But after hearing the comments that Wright has made in these past few days I think it's time for Senator Obama to (according to the Good Book) "shake the dust off" his "feet" and disassociate himself from the man.

And we criticize middle eastern Muslims as being crazy for their in-fighting. Christian on Christian hate crimes go back hundreds of years before the Mayflower. Christians can be as violent, and hateful as anybody else.
Obama is right. This whole drama about Rev. Wright is a circus started by the media and continued by the media. Sooner or later boredom will set in and the "reporters" will go after fresh meat. McCain should hold his breath because sooner or later the press will not be smiten by his smell but rather will realize there are many assoications in John's background that might give the voters pause. Can anyone say savings and loans?
Jesus would not be pleased with the haters attacking a sister Church.
Trying to associate Obama with the statements of Rev. Wright is both wrong and clearly an ill attempt at dodging the real issues of this election.

the McCain/Clinton biased media is just stirring it up again.   I'm voting for the best candidate for President.  I'm not voting for his pastor, his neighbors or his patriotic attire.  It's time to change Washington and I'm voting for Barack Obama because I know that he will be a President for all the American people.
He Baptized you and your kids how stupied do you think the gun carrying, bitter, white people are
End the Drama OBAMA

This guy is throwing you under his bus....

This is all new, right now....End it.

Dr. Wright did this, nobody did it to him...He has injected himself at this critical moment....

No matter how much he has meant to you in the past, you can't carry his baggage....

Take a deep breath, and end it...Strength of leadership is on display...
Most of these idiots forget some of the damning things that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. said about America. Are people really that arrogant to think that America is God-like and without any fault? Have we now lost our freedom to criticize our own government? Are we really free when the political elite hide behind the cries of patriotism even though they have never worn the uniform?

After the controversial comments from Reverend Jeremiah Wright; Hillary Clinton said "He would never have been my pastor." Martin Luther King, Jr. is a global icon of peace with a national holiday, would he be regarded in such a light by Hillary if he were alive today? These are snippets from speeches MLK made after the famous I have a dream speech.

MLK SAID AMERICA IS GOING TO HELL: Memphis, Tenn., March 18, 1968
"And I come by here to say that America, too, is going to hell if she doesn't use her wealth. If America does not use her vast resources of wealth to end poverty and make it possible for all of God's children to have the basic necessities of life, she, too, will go to hell." - Martin Luther King
How many people who post on here can say they are as patriotic as this:

Former Reagan Defense official Lawrence Korb co-wrote a guest piece for the Chicago Tribune about a young African-American man who took John Kennedy's inspiration so seriously he gave up his student deferment and voluntarily joined the Marines in 1961. He did a later Navy stint and before leaving service in 1967, he was a member of the presidential medical team as a cardiopulmonary technician and recipient of three White House letters of commendation. He later became a minister: Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Sen. Barack Obama's sometimes over-the-top but patriotism-in-action preacher. Wright doesn't just enjoy the right to free speech; he earned it.
I am an Obama supporter but I think it is time Jeremiah Wright exits stage left.  This man has an ego bigger than ANYONE I have ever seen.  Being humble is what I believe in my practices of religion.
Patty, sd, ca - Congratulations, you are probably one of the few people on these blogs who changes people's minds.  I think you must be quite good at driving people away from Hillary Clinton, if they consider that a vote for Clinton aligns them with you.
Hilary sucks. Does not have that much more experience than Obama and her husband did nothing during his presidency. His promises were made of hot air and died a sudden death each time they went to the house floor. Hilary is stone cold and will never win the presidency. She should give up now because everyone has already thrown their support to Obama. Obama can and will beat McCain.
In Iowa we had to show an ID before I voted in the caucaus that Hillary Clinton claims doesn't count.
Obama keep your focus on the election and Rev Wright will focus on his agenda to separate issues even though the media is trying to make it same as a distraction.  I see according to the media this going to be one long freaking election year. Obama gets my vote no matter what happens PERIOD.
More obsfuscation. This man must be an
amazinf attorney. Just a couple of months ago,
he defended his relationship, told us he went
to Wright as his spiritual advisor, he
officiated at his wedding, and baptized both
Obama and his daughters. This goes back 20
years. That's a LONG time. He wants us to
trust us with his judgement. He wants us to
question Hillary Clinton's judgement because
she's married to a man with a wandering eye.
Huge difference. What went on in their marriage
is between them. What Senator Obama thinks and
has ascribed to in silence in order to tie
himself to the African American community for
political resource is something else. Tomorrow,
someone in his camp will announce that we've
"misheard" everything -- that he's never even
met Reverend Wright. What is clear is that he
has made this man very angry after being in
step with him for 20 years and then throwing
him under the bus when the affiliation is
questioned. After all of the time that Obama
has heard this man speak this way, he's not
walked away until Wright's views were made
public and there was an outcry. At first, he
was loathe to denounce him. He thought having
made that speech of distraction would be
enough. That we would simply accept this
glossing over of obvious hate speak and
association. When he was pressed to say he
absolutely would have nothing else to do with
Wright and had to drive him from his public
circle, it has turned out that Rev. Wright,
having looked back at the way it was done,
has decided to rock the boat. He is now on
a public media tour to make sure this matter
remains in the forefront. The polls reflect the
continuing controversy and allows this man's
speeches to be reviewed and dissected. Exactly
what Senator Obama did not want to happen. In
so doing, he doesn't really speak to the
matter at hand but tries to distract the public
with his pretense of having other matters on
his mind. Which he doesn't. This is right up
there on the hit parade in his mind and he
can't make it go away because it appears that
Wright is going to make sure he sings all the
way to the decision making of the delegates
and through the November election period. It
just gets worse no matter how some media outlets
and their writers try to bury it or pretend it's
a non-story.
Oh, Luanne.  Hillary is not what I want or what we need.  I sure don't want any sniper fire sailing over the White House.  Oh, wait a minute - there WASN'T any sniper fire, so what I don't want in the White House is a LIAR.  At least our last two presidents - one of whom was a Clinton - were liars.
I also don't want a president who thinks that "lobbyists represent real people."  I've never once had a lobbyist ask me what I want them to accomplish in Washington.  They don't represent us; they represent big money.  Saturday at our district convention, we had a debate over whether the party should have Superdelegates.  We voted to oppose continuing to have superdelegates.  Some argued that "we elect them, so they should have more of a say."  I agree that we elect them, but I vote for them to get things done at the state level and in Washington.  I do NOT elect them to overrule my vote and the time and effort I put into being a pledged delegate.  Look at the math; Hillary needs 70% of the remaining pledged delegate and half of the remaining supers (and since Super Tuesday, Obama's gotten about 80% of the supers anyway).  It simply can't be done.  She's either stubborn to a fault or just plain stupid, and she doesn't understand that if she tears the party apart in order to keep Obama from winning in November, she won't have enough capital left to come back and win in 2012.
Keep on this ridiculous road Dems.

Let the republicans convince you that the nice guy is the bad guy. That the lying woman is your best shot.  That Obama is a muslim and a radical christian simultaneously. That throwing the most loyal constituency of the Democratic Party who voted 85+% both times with Clinton, for Kerry, and for Dukakis is actually whats BEST for the party and they will actually receive it 'ok'.

Fools.
People at MSNBC----I just heard a lead in on your network with Tim Russert saying:  "It's about the war.....It's about the economy.....it's about our country.....that's why people care.......THEN FOR GOD'S SAKE PROVE IT!!!!  All day you go on and on about Rev. Wright, Bill's lack of couth, McCain's free use of his wife's beer/Lear jet.......ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the economy, the war, the country.  What's next??? Bat Boy for Pres?  You are no better than E Entertainment or Extra.
My God before anyone speak on the Rev. issue could you please listen with an open mind and an open heart I know that's hard for a lot of people to do. All some people see is color and shut off their minds and hearts. Too bad...... You might learn something!
People who think Rev. Wright is a reason why Americans should vote against Obama weren't going to vote for Obama anyway.  They simply needed a REASON to justify choosing the "same old politics" in Washington. Maybe some of them didn't like Obama's skin color, perhaps some of them didn't like Obama's rhetoric or age.  Bottom line: Clinton and McCain benefitted from this distraction.  Voters lost out on another opportunity to demand that our candidates focus on the issues that affect us.

Of course this latest Wright episode also highlights a double standard in American politics. When Falwell and Robertson were spewing their hate speech, Americans didn't hold the presidential candidates at fault.  Very little has been said about Hagee and McCain.  Probably because it has always been understood that supporters do not necessarily speak for the candidates. And I doubt that anyone has asked the Clintons why they invited Wright to the White House years ago.
Ah Geez, the reason why this guy is all over the place is because the media (that includes MSNBC) is giving him too much power! You've given him a platform and now he won't get down.

It's blatant racism; the media won't touch Monica Lewinsky and even seems to forget the fact that Bill Clinton was tried for impeachment because he committed perjury while he was in office; why isn't Hillary  responsible for her husband's immoral behavior? Why doesn't McCain have to answer to that nutcase who calls Catholics "wh*res" and New Orleans deserving of Katrina?

I'm throwing my hands up in the air; you guys all deserve what you are going to get in November. Let me quote my minister:  God help you.
The media seems to be hearing what Rev Wright is saying and selectively listening and repeating what they choose to put the spin on and air what they choose to. 'THE BIGGEST PROBLEM' for Senator Obama is the media who is perpetuating the ill feelings towards him.
Obama has to walk a fine line.  But Wright is not a Moses, or Abraham, or Jeremiah, or Isaias, despite the fact that he thinks he speaks for God.
Obama knows that he is finally obligated to God just as Wright says that he (Wright) is.
Wright is an albatross.  A sad example of a Christian man, who has returned evil for good.  God help the Rev. Wright.
As a 55-yr old white woman who has worshiped in conservative churches in very red, red states, I can tell you that most pastors say some very stupid things. It's just that most white people have heard these things so they don't seem so odd. They are willing to write off  stupid, offensive statements as being just like an 'old uncle' because generally the pastor is only one of many reasons you select a church. People select churches because they like certain other people there, because of the location, because they think the music is good, because they feel they can do good there....on and on. If I chose my churches solely on my pastors' view of politics, I'd have left several of my churches (I've moved a lot, so I've seen quite a few). Truth is that most religious leaders have some pretty odd thoughts.

Obama is NOT his pastor. He is the best thing this country has seen in a long time, and partly due to the view of the world he has seen from this church. If nothing else, it has to have helped him understand how a large slice of America views the world. As he's made clear, it's time we work towards more unity.

In context, by the way, Wright did have some insightful things to say. You have to wade through some weird stuff, but if somebody is on the fence on this topic, it's probably worth it to listen to the whole thing.
Wright should be running for president. Why is it Americans fear the truth being told?
People from Rev Wright's generation grew up during the Tuskeegee experiments where their own government conducted fatal experiments on American Blacks and used them as Guinea pigs! Its is not surprising that he still has doubts about the government and is pushing with every breath he has for change!

Rev Wright has every right(no pun intended) to criticize the country he risked his life for for 6 years, ESPECIALLY now as a preacher who's MORALLY obliged to speak out against injustices and the immorality of some of his country's actions!
Is it unpatriotic to condemn actions taken by the Administration that were wrong and immoral?
No! Its his right and duty to do so.

Besides, why is no one mentioning anything about McCain and his relationship with radical televangelist John Hagee? Who once said immediately after Katrina hit: "Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans." "New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God," Hagee said"

Look: There is no doubt that rev Wright's sermons were fiery and kind of sladerous, but his sermons were just as fiery as most African American sermons are, not more, not less! Why don't you judge the man by his actions? Look at his track record, the people he helped, his service to the community, before you judge him.

Also, blaming Barack for a fiery sermon that his pastor gave ONCE in 20 years isn't fair.
He doesn't speak for Barack. The only reason Barack is distancing himself from Wright is because Barack's goal is uniting people, and these kinds of fiery sermons only help divide us more, and sow more anger into our hearts.

Running stories about Obama's pastor over and over and over again is a desperate attempt, because they have literally run out of dirt to dig on him!
