Obama calls voter ID ruling 'wrong'

Posted: Monday, April 28, 2008 6:27 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Aswini Anburajan
INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Obama said he was disappointed today in the new Supreme Court decision that has upheld Indiana's voter ID law, calling it "wrong," and emphasizing that the law could suppress turnout among minorities and poorer voters.

"I am disappointed by today's Supreme Court decision upholding Indiana's photo identification law -- one of the most restrictive in the nation," Obama said in a written statement.

He referenced his decision to file an amicus brief when Indiana's voter ID law was first challenged, saying he did it because he believed that "it places an unfair burden on Indiana residents who are poor, elderly, disabled, or members of minority groups."

Obama pledged to ensure that all voters have "unfettered access to the polls" on May 6th, and added that he was "encouraged that the Court has not complete closed the door to future challenges to state voter ID laws that create discriminatory barriers to the right to vote."

In a 6-3 decision today, the Supreme Court said that Indiana's requirement that voters show a form of identification at the polls is not unconstitutional. Opponents of the law argued that the law placed a burden on the right to vote and would depress turnout among  poor, elderly, minority and disabled voters at the polls.

Clinton's Indiana state director, Robbie Mook, when asked about the law, avoided any comment on the decision, only saying: "Our top priority is that every vote will be cast and counted." He added that the campaign would act according to the law and was encouraging its supporters to vote absentee and vote early.

This ruling kind of cuts into Obama's voters.
It's doubful the SC cares what a freshman Senator thinks about its rulings.
Obama, what about MI and FL if you want every vote to count? Or is it just the ones that are for you?
HILLARY to win.
Pretty one-sided vote there Barack. 6-3. From some of the greatest legal minds in the world. A two-bit dime-a-dozen lawyer like youself should reconsider your position.
You have to show your ID to get a drink in this country, and no one has a problem with that.  How could being required to show your ID in order to vote discriminate in a different way?
Had this ruling been enacted in PA, Hillary legal team would have pounced on it. However, since this won't affect her target voters as much as it will Obama's, she's willing to keep quiet on this one. She wants to insure that every vote counts, just as long as it's Florida votes that went her way. But if the worse that happens is that some of Obam's black base doesn't get to vote, hey, no big deal.
You would think that proper identification should be required everytime you vote.
What does that have to be with being poor or being a minority.
What about the votes from Michigan and Florida ,has Obama shown any concern.??
Clinton has nothing to say about voters possible being disinfranchised. She believes FL and MI are when she agreed to strip these states of their delegates. I guess it is not important to her about disinfranchising voters providing it benefits her and she wins IN. What a hypocrite.
Why is it wrong to show your ID before you can vote?

Without ID, couldn't someone just vote twice?
I am John Doe living at 123 Main, let me vote for Candidate X.

I am John Smith living at 124 Main, let me vote for Candidate X.
The 6 out of the 9 Supremes call voting for Obama "wrong."
Luanne - let's put Obama on the ballot in MI and see how it goes.  Hillary only got 55% there when she was the only name on the ballot.  That's pretty weak.
Your map showing the states that require photo ID's is incorrect.  You have to shown a picture ID in Ohio.  Who did your research?
It may be in Obama's benefit to have ID's shown at the voting polls, that will eliminate unwanted voters on both sides of the fence and let the dead rest in peace.
Why is Obama whinning? The idea of a burden to "...poor, elderly, minority and disabled voters..." is ridiculous. Haven't these people ever written a check, got a drivers license, applied for anything that required an ID in their lifetime? It is the right thing to do in today's world to prove you are who you say you are. The only people that probably do not want to show ID's are illegals, criminals, dead beat child support parents and other people with something to hide or avoid.
Albert, you're an idiot.  Editor of the Harvard Law Review is hardly someone I'd call a "two-bit dime-a-dozen lawyer".  Grow up.
Because drinking is a privaledge, voting is a right.
Luanne, the Florida and Michigan votes were not valid.  No one had an opportunity to campaign.  In Michigan, Barack and the other candidates that were still in the race, except for Hillary, took their names off the ballot.  Something should have been done to fix the problem, either before the vote, or by having a re-vote after it.  But the votes you refer to are tainted and need to be thrown out.
now wait a second Luanne. Here is a perfect example of HRC tactics. She bitches about Fl and MI but a ruling that will keep many from voting, she has no comment.

Obama on the other hand is simply sticking to the rules set forth by the DNC.

Please think before you vote.
Perhaps that the Oh-So-Wrighteous Osama would prefer to have Hoosiers vote "Chicago style" where the dead, the never born, the absent, and the fictitious vote with impunity in keeping his sorry ass in a featherbed office. You've been carded, Elitist Dude!
Anon, wait until you are in your 80s and can't drive a car anymore and don't have family nearby to get you to a facility to get you a new photo ID when your ID card from the state expires.  And imagine you are struggling to buy your food and medicine, so cab fare is a big deal.  Then you will understand why this law is a hardship for some people.
No Problem. Require all states that make it mandutory to have a photo ID to provide one when they registar the people to vote.
As with all things American, the rules are always changed, the bar is always raised, the accomplishments are always poo pooed, the triumph is always wrested away, the victories are always challenged, when it comes to her not so subtly oppressed African American citizens.

Do we wonder why Wright is full of anger? Or are we more incensed that he should have the audacity to speak out against America's shameful mistreatment of her most reviled, and marginalized demographic?.

America is already damned.
Well, isn't that just peachy? NOW Senator Clinton says she will play by the rules. I wonder if Michigan and Florida voters are listening. Nice hacket job on the front page of the website, by the way, think you could have positioned the two polls any closer to give the impression that Senator Obama is slipping? That's not very objective reporting. Never fear, our support is rock solid for Senator Obama.
You have to show your ID to get a drink in this country, and no one has a problem with that.  How could being required to show your ID in order to vote discriminate in a different way?

Wouldn't it be great if you could show your ID, vote, THEN get a drink?  Polling places would be packed.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
as usual obama says one thing and then another. No votes count for FL and MI---but everybody should vote and be counted without ID for Obamaland. He has 2 faces just like Romney and speaks out of both at the same time.
From what I can tell on this blog, you are not very sensitive to the very poor or the elderly. State ID's are not FREE.  This disenfranchises those who do not drive a car or who have no need to have an ID.  The state is forcing those people to get state issued ID's in order to vote.

And if you want to know the truth--These people are more than likely are Democrats.  That is why the Republicans want this.   They want to disenfranchise the poorest among us.

So people have a heart.

Rex Collett (Sent Monday, April 28, 2008 6:31 PM)

Wait a mintue, I thought it was the Clinton's supporters who are the poorest working class and Obama's supporters are the elitist and most educated.   You mean all those polls that have been hammered down our throats are wrong?
Hmm, let's see:

To vote in Indiana you need a photo ID.  If you don't have one, the state will give you one for free.  Or, you can vote provisionally, and then stop by a local office within 10 days after the election and show proof of identity.

Doesn't sound too tough, especially since most people in this country have a vague idea that an election is coming up and could probably go down and get the free ID some time in the next four or five months.

What does Sen. Obama want?  Fred gets to just wander in to a polling place, announces he'd like to vote, has no ID and we just give him a ballot?  How do we even know that he lives in Indiana?
Why did they wait until now. The suprems gave the vote to Bush and I don't trust them
Obama, what about MI and FL if you want every vote to count? Or is it just the ones that are for you?
HILLARY to win.

Luanne,

That question would be better posed to the politician in those states who voted to move their primaries up in violation of DNC Rules and NOT Obama Rules.

Let's not confuse the issues here.

In the end, all we can do is reach out to under-represented groups and be sure they have as much access as possible by giving them the information they need about either how to get their photo ID or how to go about filing an absentee ballot, etc. It's already enough of a pain to get to the polls in the middle of the week, with work and kids and everything else to worry about. Why add to the problem? We should be making it easier to vote, not more difficult.
Another example of just how out of touch Obama is when it comes to real life.  There is virtually nothing that you can do in today's society that doews not require you to have a photo ID.  The State of Indiana does not require any payment of fee for a photo ID no matter what your income level.  So if a photo ID is free how is that discriminating?
ST Carringer - It's doubtful that the SC cares what ANYONE thinks about their rulings.  Their lifetime appointees. So your point was...???
Sen Obama has taken the kitchen sink and taken the media blows and he is till coming back and coming back strong.  Addressing the issues this great country faces. YES WE CSAN believe in yourselves.
Not necessarily Rex!  Since Obama has been branded by the Clinton campaign as elitest and unable to reach blue-collar voters, who do you REALLY think will be impacted?

It's all ridiculous - the whole election system is fraught with mines, and every opportunity for some to use power and influence.  I don't see it as equal.  It should have been changed long ago.
Since Sen. Obama is from Chicago his comments doesn't surprise me.  During the 1st Mayor Daly's reign in Chicago I believe it was standard practice to allow dead people to vote.  Just like he claims he's for change, but demands adhearance to "party" rules when it suits him.  It doesn't take that much to get photo ID's anymore and it keeps dead people in the cemetary where they belong.
This ruling cuts into HRC voters.

Older people without driver licenses, and poorer people.

These are HRC MAIN voting blocks.

Obama supporters are college students, that will have school i.d., and college graduates, that have drivers licenses.

Don;t really see how this cuts into Obama's voters.
Sen Obama may or may not win the nomination but one thing he did prove that Africa Americans have been saying all the while that prejudice is still alive and well.  It is noble that our younger generation is able to move past old synical prejudicial thinking and become open minded to things that might actually help us to get ahead in the long run.  People have spent weeks talking racial this and racial that if we can ever get past it we can focus on the things to better help our limping economy.
Pretty one-sided vote there Barack. 6-3. From some of the greatest legal minds in the world. A two-bit dime-a-dozen lawyer like youself should reconsider your position.
  ~Albert Lore (Sent Monday, April 28, 2008 6:35 PM)

That is a little low, don't you think?  BTW, you aren't actually talking to Obama - You know that right?

there is nothing wrong with showing ID to vote
What is wrong is:
drivers licences for illegal aliens is wrong ,how many illegals plan to vote?
                every one with a licence
not giving a gas holiday is wrong
the extra travel it could genereate might translate into tourism dollads $$$
another thing wrong is his eletist mo nercy aproach to something immediate and simple to carry out for a little relief for the citizens.
another thing wrong is what's name, just call him judis concern that south americans like BHO they probally looking to come by 40 or 50 million of them to drive over the midle class
Senator Clinton has it right now she tops MCCaine by 9%
BHO why don't you do the right thing and Quit as your boy Dean wantssomeone to do?
I don't have a problem with this ruling. However, I do have a problem with Hillary. The Clinton's have become intoxicated by politics and privledge. They need a time out like my four year old.
I don't disagree with Obama on much; but, I don't see a problem with having to show an ID to vote.  I live here in Indiana and if you can't afford an ID, you get one free for voting purposes.
I have to wonder about anyone who doesn't carry some sort of ID. Come on, who doesn't carry ID in this country?  Everyone I know does...if you drive, you carry ID.  If you want a drink or to get into a club, you carry ID...what's with people who don't?  In my mind, if you don't have ID, you probably aren't legal. Of course, there are so many fake ID's out there, you could still be illegal and have ID, so what's the big deal about not showing it to vote? I have to show it when I use a credit card...doesn't everyone? I don't get the arguement here.  Common sense has just flown out the window in this country.  It's not like it's difficult to think "Hmmmm I think I'll go vote -- better take my ID so I can."
So I guess Obama, this is going to be YOUR White House huh?

S.Ct. doesn't think so.  You and Gore need to go somewhere and just disappear for real.
This ruling cuts into many voters -- can you imagine being 80+, living in a rural area and having to go to the County Court house to get a state identification?  Because this is exactly what they are going to have to do -- and some of Senator Clinton's voters will certainly fit into this category.  This particular law carries a serious barrier for anyone who does not have a license to drive, and those who are the very elderly (of every color) are usually the ones who lack this drivers' license.

Senator Obama has always favored counting all of the votes and not placing barriers between us and the ballot.  When he was a young lawyer, he brought a case seeking to force Illinois to obey a voter protection law -- this particular law was NOT being enforced and was making it more difficult for voters (of every color) to register to vote.  Senator Obama won and to this day in Illinois a voter can register in less than a minute thanks to that lawsuit.
This Governor is another one of the White Power Elites who will do anything to see that people of color, (any color) are not elected to high power offices across this country.  It is so obvious to everyone what this man is trying to do along with the Clintons.  North Carolina is for Obama and this man is against the will of his own voting public.

Well, Indiana you know what you have to do with this Governor, vote him out of office!!!!!!!!!!!

This not a race issue it is a power issue and a have and have not issue.  This is an issue of free speech, free thoughts, free worship and free elections.  Dont be lead.....Be a leader!
Wwll, Obama has two immediate problems.  The ID requirement for IN, and Pastor Wright.  Both will serve either to keep turn for him down, or against him.
It is not that it affects 100% of his voters, but a marginal percentage to keep his vote down.

How sad.
More bad news for Obama on a day of bad news.  Sheez.
obama i don't get it, what is the problem with requiring a photo ID to vote. Wouldn't this prevent all those McCain voters from voting multiple times? Are we trying to foster voter fraud or do we need it to win? whats the story?
IN MN. YOU NEED AN PICTURE ID TO WRITE A CHECK OUT OR TO USE A CREDIT. TO BUY CIGARETTES HOW MANY EXTRA VOTES COULD BE MADE WITHOUT AN ID. OBAMA GIVE IT UP
From Anon
"You have to show your ID to get a drink in this country, and no one has a problem with that.  How could being required to show your ID in order to vote discriminate in a different way?"

Easy drinking is considered a vice not a fundamental right upheld in the "Bill Of Rights" in the US Constitution.

And to others Fl and MI delegates will be counted, they just wont play a role in the outcome of this election.
