Wright meets the press

Posted: Tuesday, April 29, 2008 9:24 AM by Mark Murray

The reviews of Wright’s appearance at the National Press Club yesterday were mostly unkind. The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank: “Wright, explaining this morning why he had waited so long before breaking his silence about his incendiary sermons, offered a paraphrase from Proverbs: ‘It is better to be quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.’ Barack Obama's pastor would have been wise to continue to heed that wisdom. More: "Should it become necessary in the months from now to identify the moment that doomed Obama's presidential aspirations, attention is likely to focus on the hour between nine and ten this morning at the National Press Club. It was then that Wright, Obama's longtime pastor, reignited a controversy about race from which Obama had only recently recovered - and added lighter fuel."

The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson: "I'm sorry, but I've had it with Wright. I would never try to diminish the service he performed as pastor of his Chicago megachurch, and it's obvious that he's a man of great charisma and faith. But this media tour he's conducting is doing a disservice that goes beyond any impact it might have on Obama's presidential campaign. The problem is that Wright insists on being seen as something he's not: an archetypal representative of the African American church. In fact, he represents one twig of one branch of a very large tree."

Adds Bob Herbert: "The Rev. Jeremiah Wright went to Washington on Monday not to praise Barack Obama, but to bury him. Smiling, cracking corny jokes, mugging it up for the big-time news media — this reverend is never going away. He’s found himself a national platform, and he’s loving it."

The New York Times’ Alessandra Stanley: "Now it turns out that Mr. Wright doesn’t hate America, he loves the sound of his own voice. He is not out of touch with the American culture, he is the avatar of the American celebrity principle: he grabbed his 30-second spots of infamy and turned them into 15 minutes of fame."

The Washington Post has this interesting nugget: "Obama aides said Wright had rebuffed their recent offers of public relations assistance. They stressed that they had no warning about a media blitz that included an appearance with Bill Moyers on PBS on Friday night, a nationally televised speech to the NAACP in Detroit on Sunday evening and yesterday's appearance at the National Press Club."

Obama was asked if he felt betrayed by Wright, who played a significant role in Obama's spiritual life for 20 years, performed his wedding and inspired the title of Obama's most recent book, ‘The Audacity of Hope.’ ‘I just want to emphasize that this is my former pastor,’ Obama said. ‘Any of the statements that he's made both to trigger this controversy and that he's made over the last several days are not statements that I've heard him make previously. They don't represent my views. And they don't represent what this campaign's about.’”

“Obama did not mention Wright at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, where he spoke and took questions for about 80 minutes. In response to a question about his faith Obama spoke at length, but did not use it as an opening to say yet more about Wright. No one in the enthusiastic 5,000-person crowd asked him about the controversy, nor did anyone tonight among 1,900 people packed into a high school gym in Wilson."

“Ron Walters, a University of Maryland political scientist and the former campaign manager for Jesse Jackson in 1988, said Wright is clearly attempting to address the ‘gross unfairness’ in the way his remarks have been characterized. While Wright is understandably defending himself, Walters said, ‘it doesn't bode well for tamping down the story’ that Obama probably wishes would disappear,” the Boston Globe writes. “‘This [controversy] is unlikely to go away any time soon,’ he said. And it will make it more difficult for Obama to wrest away disaffected white working-class voters from Hillary Clinton, Obama's Democratic rival. Clinton carried that constituency by wide margins over Obama in winning primaries in Pennsylvania and Ohio -- wins that kept her candidacy alive and prevented Obama from wrapping up the nomination.”

The New York Post blares “Pastor Disaster” on its cover over a photo of Wright at the National Press Club, his hands cupped outward. Wright had some words for Obama, saying if he’s elected he’d be going after him.

And… Sharpton is blasting Obama. “Obama made a call for nonviolence in the aftermath of the Sean Bell verdict -- infuriating the Rev. Al Sharpton, who accused the presidential candidate of trying to ‘grandstand in front of white people,’ sources told The Post.

Ironic that the media criticizes Rev. Wright, while simultaneously running every word he says over and over again. The poor media is powerless to stop itself in it's meaningless pursuit of the sensational over the substantive. The dog is once again chasing it's tail.
Keep talking Rev.
Just keep talking.....
‘It is better to be quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Bill Clinton would be wise to follow that advise.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/29/clinton-booster-organized_n_99129.html

Look at this!!! A Clinton person is behind the Revs press conference

Wright is getting his press advice from a Clinton supporter, Barbara Reynolds.  It's unfortunate that McNBC doesn't see the need to mention who made arrangements for Wright at the Press Club.

This is a not so subtle attempt to put a wedge between Obama and the white community and the black community at the same time and perfectly timed for the upcoming primaries.  I mention the possibility of a wedge with the black community because if Obama handles it badly it has that potential.

These next elections can't happen soon enough.  I'm sick of the campaign by Democrats against Democrats.  I'm ready for focus on McCain.

GO OBAMA!

What does Rev. Wright have to do with Barack Obama?
Mr. Obama cannot control what someone else says.
I,ll bet there are some of you sitting out there whop have sat in church and heard much worse.
For instance those of you who have ministers who read from the Dakes Bible.
All of this spin, is just the beginning of how you people plan to disc Mr. Obama and put Hillary in. BIG MISTAKE! She won't win. I'll never vote for her.
I'll skip this one.
According to Ben Smith in today's Politico.com, Rev. Wright was invited to the National Press Club by an HRC supporter.
This is obvious the white media that does not understand and chooses not to understand the traditions of the black church.  I will admit not all black churches are not the same(some are enthusiastic and some are quiet) but there are traditions that stemmed back from slavery/Africa.

I don't know of any black church that teaches hate.  If you love Jesus how can you hate?

This is sad.  Rev Wright is not running for president.  Also, Rev Hagee is not runing for president either.

This guilty by association is just wrong.
How about reporting the New York Daily News story from this morning.  Turns out the Wright Speech yesterday morning at the Nation Press Club was organized by an outspoken Clinton supporter.  Can you say setup?
I'm pleased that people are seeing this 'story' for what it is... bunk.

Wright is a media-whore.  Plain and simple.  He loves the sound of his own voice and does not care for anyone but himself - particularly when he's in front of a microphone.

If the media were to ignore him (yeah, right), he would likely fade away back to Chicago.  Unfortunately, the media loves to run his rants on a loop.

Obama needs to end this - once and for all.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Amazing....the news media continues to report the Wright issue will not go away in the near future, couldn't be because they won't let it????  Are people actually calling or e-mailing the paper or station asking 24/7 Wright coverage???

Bob, Chicago

Obama's pastor/mentor is not a crazy uncle.  He is a racist, pure and simple!  Obama pushed for Don Imus to be fired over a stupid racial remark, but yet clings to his hate-speech reverand. Too late now to throw him under the bus as that would be seen a purely political.
It is all wright all the time.
The gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving............
The media has power over the narrative that is Dr. Wright (yes, he's a PhD) and the sad truth is that the media will never change that narrative for 2 reasons.

1. He's great for ratings.
2. The media's ego will never allow them to admit that they're wrong about the man.

I watched Dr. Wright's speech and Q&A at the National Press Club.  I also watched "Moron Joe" and saw Scarborough and his little buddies wringing their hands over Dr. Wright and his relationship with Senator Obama.

Let it go!

Dr. Wright is his own man just as Sen. Obama is his own man.

But, this appears all that is left for opponents of the Obama campaign..."We can't find anything on the Senator himself so we'd better try our damnedest to nail this guy to him!"

Let it go!
It is all wright all the time.
The gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving............
I think Wright's foray into the spotlight only highlights the differences between him and Obama, and between their world views.

While Wright's sermons, looped and repeated as they may have been to cause maximum damage, have been addressed. The importance of Obama's speech on race and the reality of race relations in our country should not be obscured by Rev. Wright's sideshow, or the attempts of Clinton and McCain to cast Wright as Obama's running mate.
Guess who invited him to speak at the npc ...Dr Barbara Reynolds...Yes a Hillary Supporter.....Enough said.....More dirty work by the Clintons...
Keep talking Rev.
Just keep talking.....
20 Years, and you're trying to tell me he had no influence on Obama? (Sent Tuesday, April 29, 2008 9:33 AM)

------------
Why post that?  Why would Obama be running for president if he didn't care about this country?  Heck, I'm Catholic, and go to church, but disagree with most of the social teachings of my church through my priest...I'm pro choice and pro gay rights...yet my church isn't either one, does that mean I'm lying about where I stand on those issues?  Same thing goes for Obama and what the guy who preaches at his church sometimes says.  Get a grip.
Americans are crisis addicted and the media is the drug dealer. It's so discouraging for those of us who are teachers. There's not much to point to anymore as an example of how to live because it's not possible to compete with the greed and feed of the media.
Everyone loses, but sadly and most important, our children. Not one person in this entire mess has mentioned or considered what all this is telling them.
And teachers all over the country are either joining in or left to despair. It's a sad day in this country when one uses current events and people, with rare exceptions , to show students how NOT to behave.
Obama needs to do no less than publicly disown his spiritual father and then characterize his own religious faith in clear, simple terms that match the spirituality of the majority of voters.
This relationship is very very very odd. The only reasonable, possible explanation to the Wright/Obamba debacle is that Obama agreed with his mentor for 20 YEARS.  That is why Wright feels free to give his Anti American Speeches while Obama shies away from denouncing him.  Obama cannot denounce nor refused Wright because the truth will come out.  Wright is Obama’s true political liability.  SO ASK YOURSELF WHY?  Why CANT THE NEXT POSSIBLE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES DENOUNCE AND RENOUNCE HIS CRAZY, ANTI-AMERICAN PASTOR?    EASY; WRIGHT KNOWS TOO MUCH and the moment Obama tries to say otherwise this will be the moment Rev.Wright will expose Obama for the fraud he really is.
Wright is obviously not 'linked' with Barack Obama. It sounds more and more just like as if he was not more than Obama pastor.

I have to ask you ... if you are catholic and your priest abused a child - does that make YOU a sexual predator ?
I spent 20 years in my grandparents church and hated every moment of it. I just didn't like their church. You go to church and take away what is important to you. Rev Wright might be a little cookey and say some off the wall things, but he does speak a lot of truth.  The way he preaches is entertainment and keeps butts in the seats.
Rev. Wright threw Obama under bus years ago...
His standards are so high. His is a mighty work because of the success within the community...
Success breeds success...No wonder there's a man related to his synergy that wants to run for President is so inspired...This river of enthusiasm
bubbles as a great fountain...Look for the positve, look for the spirit...callings  and courage of Barack Obama is the amazing thing...where else could this be? Where else should this be?
Obama's campaign touches the core of all Americans.
The Spirit Calls and we GO...GO OBAMA'08
Why is it that it is okay for a politician to be a former member of the KKK or a segregationist, or a adulterer, or a client of a prostitute, and no one questions whether or not those views still affects them today?

Why is Senator Obama always held to a different (and higher) standard than any other politician?

And for the "20 years" crowd, how many years have "the Clintons" been explaining away their repeated bad judgments in their personal and financial lives?

Here some foder and I hope some news organization follows this lead:

The woman who organized this "Press" event is one of Wrights parisioners AND an ardent HILLARY SUPPORTER!!  The Obama camp have not been in touch with this guy and so could not have had the slightest inkling of what his oponent was hatching.  I know:  This is speculation; I'm sure any tracks were covered quite well, having a quality of "plausible deniability".  But doesn't it strike you as STRANGE when yesterday Hillary for FIRST TIME EVER IN THIS CAMPAIGN went after McCain for his inability to stop the NC republican party from running this add??  And of ALL THINGS, Rev Wright??  The ONE THING they've ADMITTED yapping in the Supers' ears about Obama's electability?  This speculation . . . but there an awful lot of smoke coming from the Hillary's side.  This HILLARY AIDE, who conicidentally is a wright parisioner MUST have known what exposure like this would do to his campaign!  Lord knows what they've been telling this man to stir him up like this absent any contact from the Obama camp.  Think about this people.  The Press needs to do some work for once.  "Where there is Smoke there's FIRE!"
I just read a report elsewhere that pointed out that the woman that organized the event yesterday and put Rev. Wright out there, was none other than a big Hillary supporter.  Surprise!!!
why doesn't the media pick up on the somments made by Pat Buccanan on 3/21/08?????and play that over and over...
why is it that msnbc runs rev. wright's word while pat beaucannon made all those racisr statement on the air about blacks and msnbc thinks its o'k i think msnbc is now being as racist as they say rev wright is
An even bigger issue is, why is it that the media jumped all over this "blitz?"  Easy.  The National Press Club event was orgainized by an ardent Clinton advisor, who blogs regularly for her and who has criticized Obama for denouncing Rev. Wright's statements.  She invited Rev. Wright to speak a day before Obama's Philadelphia speech.

www.politico.com
www.huffingtonpost.com

Take that and do some real investigating, MSM.  This whole thing is proving to be more sinister than I ever imagined.
The media has told us for years that Christianity and the right wing are synonymous. Now they are just beginning to learn there are other voices in Protestant America beside white, Southern evangelicals'. I don't agree with everything the pastor says, but I think he has the right to be heard and I am not frightened by hearing a new point of view.
No one is mentioning that it was a Clinton Supporter that invited Rev. Wright come out to the NPC. Rev Wright is not running for public office and if you are voting against Barack because of Rev Wright you wasn't going to vote for Barack anyway. If it's for Barack to win, he'll win, everyone not falling for the backwash!

We want real change, not more of the same. I will cast my vote for McCain if Barack doesn't win this nomination because of how this is being handled. We and a many more, guaranteed! Remember, every vote count.
Callng Chuck Todd and Keith Olbermann: please report on the fact that the National Press Club event was organized by a Clinton supporter ...

http://www.nydailynews.com/opinions/columnists/louis/index.html

And for the love of god, give Rachel Maddow her own show! She rules.
Rev. Wright likes putting everyone under the bus..

Kinda humbling listening to his high standards...
anyone who hears Wright will know that he is against Obama NOW for whatever reasons. Obama therefore remains clean.
am happy all this is happening now. October would have been a disaster. Obama has enough time to clear this.

Vote Obama
How interesting, now I haven't read the full text of all  the editorials you cite...nor have I seen much of Wright talking, but I do have to say I agree with each of the commentators (at least the snippets you highlight)...that's gotta be a first!

I tend to think that for some reason he's angry at the way he's been covered in those initial loops (which I kind of understand), that he's angry at the attention Obama's getting (perhaps he feels eclipsed by him, hey it happens!), and that he's not doing himself any favors.  I just think that whatever good message he had/has, its being totally obscured by his big fat ego.  Its definitely a shame for Wright, we'll see if its a shame for Obama.

I am still as much of a supporter for Obama as I ever was...I always saw him as independent from Wright.  We are all shaped by many forces but we should be viewed and judged by the people that we became, not by all of our old associations.

Keep the faith!  (the media can keep focusing on Wright, but like when there is coverage on Brittany Spears and now Miley Cyrus, I just flip the channel or turn off the tube, I implore the media to cover something important, like the members of the military sadly killed in Iraq yesterday, we mourn their loss)
Wright is milking this ego-trip for all it's worth. He cares nothing about "The Black Church", African Americans' plight, or Obama.  He only cares about HIMSELF, and how much fun he is having being a media-circus-of-one. Obama needs to leave this false "friend" in the dust!
Wright is a very angry man stuck in the past. Obama is not like him and does not share his views about this country. He sees the progress that has been made and looks to the future to continue making progress. We need to stop being 'stuck on stupid' and recognize they are two different people. Their tie is that Wright brought Obama to religion, but he has never been a political mentor. Let's get to the real issues.
why doesn't the media pick up on the comments made by Pat Buccanan on 3/21/08?????and play that over and over...
KRMG Radio Tulsa, OK.  Text in poll this a.m. asking if Obama is "guilty" due to all his shady and anti-American associations, including wife Michelle's feelings about "mean" America.  90% guilty and 10% not guilty.   We're told over and over traditional polling doesn't reach Obama supporters because they use cell phones and texting. Well, this WAS a text poll.  Seems like all the revelations about who he associates with are having a dramatic impact on people's impression of him.
Maybe it wasn't so bad that Wright "came out". People can see that doesn't hate America and that he really likes to spot light. Harmless in other words. This should put the Rublicans to rest also. SOME of what the Rev says is very true and America needs an honest, open dialogue about race. Racism is still alive and well in the good old USA. Sad, but true.
People keep asking, "Why now? Doesn't he know that he hurts Obama's campaign?"  Perhaps he DOES know.  Perhaps he needs Obama to lose in order to continue his Black liberation movement/message.  Perhaps he views Obama's "new kind of politics" as a threat to his legacy and the future of Black Liberation Theology.  I don't think it is far-fetched to find people on the radical left who cling to the "status quo" just as we find people on the radical right who do so.  Obama's message of change certainly threatens the status quo. Obama has formulated and embraced a post-racial and post-partisan movement that, undoubtedly, threatens political extremism on either side of the spectrum.  So, perhaps Wright knows exactly what he's doing.
No one with common sense can continue to believe that Obama has any chance to become the president of the US.  The Democrats are going to hand the election to McCain if they don't stop supporting him.  Since his supporters say they won't vote for Clinton, Al Gore should be a compromise candidate.
Give it a rest people. First Obama was a Muslim, and now his Christian pastor isn't Christian enough.

If you refuse to vote on the actual ISSUES, you deserve the high gas prices, lack of health care and loss of jobs another 4 years of McBush will bring.

Vote with your HEADS. That will be REAL CHANGE!
It was T-Ball questions to David Axlerod by Chris Matthews yesterday.

Earlier in the program he did manage to get a cheap shot on Clinton, a real non sequitor.

In fact yesterday was Obama spin on MSNBC.
Wright must have something good on Obama..... just wait until it come out.
Some of the grandparents of the civil rights movement (Sharpton, Jackson, Wright) are so afraid to let go of their victimhood, as they fear it will render them obsolete.  Rather than embrace the joy of their successes as the first viable African American candidate for President has the office within arms reach, they want to perpetuate the belief that white America won't accept the black man.  What irony that they are hurting the very cause that they've devoted their lives to.  The desire to hold onto the baton, rather than pass it to the next generation, could hurt our country.

The salvation for all of this is that there are those who are more than ready to pass the baton-  Rep. Clyburn, John Lewis.  And an even better sign that we will get past this is the millions of Americans, both black and white who come from a new generation and embrace the glorious possibility that we can move beyond race.  This generation has awakened during this election cycle, and they will be instrumental in allowing us to move forward.
Ironic that the media criticizes Rev. Wright, while simultaneously running every word he says over and over again. The poor media is powerless to stop itself in it's meaningless pursuit of the sensational over the substantive. The dog is once again chasing it's tail.
Nashville_fan

Please!

You may not see the significance of the Wright/Obama connection but there is one and it is real.  Like so many Obama supporters you seem to willingly look the other way any time the reality of present and past behavior does not jibe with the rhetoric of Obama speak.
