Obama plays hoops with UNC Tar Heels

Posted: Tuesday, April 29, 2008 10:33 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones and NBC's Mark Murray
For the second time in the past four days, Obama played basketball in front of TV cameras -- this time with the big boys. Below is the pool report from the New York Times' Jeff Zeleny:

It was shortly after 7:00 am when Sen. Barack Obama arrived at the hallowed ground of college basketball, home of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Before heading to the court for a quick morning game, he took a tour of the team’s facility. His guide? Coach Roy Williams.

Mr. Obama and Mr. Williams walked through the basement hallway of the UNC basketball center, passing black and white photographs from seasons gone by. The coach, dressed in a suit, and the senator, dressed in workout clothes, made small talk and smiled throughout the brief tour, which concluded in the locker room. “What a tradition,” Mr. Obama said, his eyes gazing around the room, which was decorated by banners from previous Final Four appearances.

Joined by Wanda Williams, the coach’s wife, the three stood on the plush blue carpet, where a school logo fills the center of the room. This is a zone of respect, where neither players nor coaches are allowed to walk across the logo. (Coach Williams explained the rules to the senator and a local Secret Service agent warned your pool to keep its distance from the mighty UNC.)

The senator made his way to the M.W. “Dyke” Peebles Jr. Practice Facility, where members of the UNC team were already warming up. One by one, the players approached and shook hands with Mr. Obama. From the moment they came into view, it was clear that today’s game would be slightly more rigorous than the one he played last Friday night at a middle school in Kokomo, IN. “These guys are a lot better than me,” Mr. Obama said, running down the full length of the court, trying to keep up with guys half his age, who less than a month ago were playing in the N.C.A.A. Final Four.

Tyler Hansbrough, the national player of the year for 2007-2008, was on hand in his signature blue jersey, No. 50. Mr. Obama drew the good fortune of being on his team. The senator played for several minutes, occasionally lagging behind the bunch. His best chance for a basket came shortly after he made a behind-the-back pass. As the ball was passed back to him, he fired up a jump shot, but it bounced from the backboard and around the rim.

“Thought I had that one,” he said.

The coach, who was watching from a chair on the edge of the court, called a substitution. “Gonna take a break, get a tip from the coach in terms of what to do,” Mr. Obama said. For about 10 minutes, he took a seat by the coach and his wife and watched the players continue their morning game.

“The smartest thing you did was backing out of the way of that rebound down there,” Mr. Williams said.

“Did you see that?” Mr. Obama replied.

A few members of the pool ventured over to the side of the court.

“These guys are big and fast when you’re out there,” Mr. Obama said, slightly short of breath. “It’s impressive.”

“And I hope they get bigger and faster,” the coach replied.

After a brief time out, Mr. Obama returned to the court and played for several more minutes. He took his shot at one more basket, but it fell short.

“You guys are leaving the next president of the United States wide open,” Mr. Williams jokingly yelled. When the senator was fouled, one of the players apologized. Not to worry, Mr. Obama said. “The Secret Service won’t do anything to you.”

In addition to Tyler Hansbrough, whom Mr. Obama congratulated for his recent decision to play another year before entering the NBA draft, this is a roster of players who suited up today: Danny Green, Deon Thompson, Marc Campbell, Marcus Ginyard, Mike Copeland, Wes Miller, Ty Lawson, Will Graves, Alex Stepheson, Surry Wood, Patrick Moody, J.B. Tanner, Jack Wooten. (Wayne Ellington, Quentin Thomas and Bobby Frasor, were on hand, but did not play.)

The senator stayed on the court for a few minutes after your pool was escorted from the gym. While the pool was watching, the senator did not score any points, but campaign aides later reported that he sunk a 3-point-shot.

We’ll wait for the highlight reel to confirm.

Let's move on to campaigning and reaching the people in every way.

Oh and by the way, being one's pastor or even Dad does not imply agreement of views or ideas. One only needs to witness me arguing bitterly with my Dad on politics and yes I love the old guy. The differences in tmperament and focus of those two could not be more obvious. One talks about similarities and overcoming common problems and how there are no red and blue states, black and white states but the United States since 2004. The other you give him 5 minues to talk politics and he starts on differences (he should be confined to speaking religion, if that).

One is from two backgrounds and focuses on lifting up while the other talks only of black church and black people (which obviously does not include Obama's mom, grandparents, and cousins so can not be his message).

One is self-centered, flamboyant, and attention seeking (this election is actually about me). The other has an even temperament, thoughful demeanor whenther he is up or down, attacked or praised.
This man will be such a cool president!!

Obama 08 and 16
Well, i hope he can play basketball better than he can bowl...speaking of black basketball players, that seems to be an untapped source of new tax revenues...talk about windfall profits for not providing any economic good
who cares?
Sounds like the pool had a fun day on the campaign trail for a change. Nice break from politics for all of us!
The college B-ball centers of the universe is North Carolina and Indiana.  Barack is a part of that universe.  The campaign is almost over and all Hillary can do is foul, foul, foul. It's too late to trade baskets. Hillary will foul out after Indiana and North Carolina primaries.
Obama will win in both states.
Rep. Ben Chandler will endorse him today, the local press reports.

In the symbolic argument over electability, Chandler's a good endorsement, representing a district in the middle of a state whose Democrats are predominantly white and working-class.

Obama by a double digit win in NC, spltting the delegates with Hillary in Indiana which appears to be a close race, and maintaining a healthy popular vote lead after next Tuesday. Drop out Hillary. Your killing your own party and you look like a jerk doing so.
For the fall election he can scrimmage with teams in every state - shows his ability and fitness.
We care!  Senator Obama continues to maintain his support.  You just wait and see how much support will exit the democratic party with someone like clinton as the nominee.  Senator Obama is the best qualified to be the President.  He has tolerated the most vile, vicious and mean-spirited attacks from the clinton camp.  I like Obama more and more.
Man, that would be a DREAM COME TRUE for me.  To play basketball in the Dean Dome with actual Tar Heels?  I hope all of those guys who declared will come back next year to win a championship.

Obama had much better games over the weekend and on RealSports.  I'm happy that he was able to keep up as much as he did though.  I want to see if he hit that three though, lol!
Olberman Overtly Obaman--

It was funny watching Keith Olberman last night on the Msnbc/Obama news network. He kept asking his panel: "What does Obama have to do to get past the Wright controversy?" Olberman sounded desperate, as though he just wanted Rev. Wright to go away so that the Obama love fest could go on.

Question: If the press is supposed to question candidates, like Obama, who want to hold public power, then why is Msnbc so in love with Obama?

Obama gives me the creeps.
Unnamed sources claim Hillary is negotiating to play with a Curling group from Fargo, and McCain is planning on getting down in a Canasta Tournament in Sun City. Ralph Nader has been thinking about entering a DemoDerby featuring an All-Corvair Bash.
Careful Ralph in Texas . . .ya sound a little bitter . . . in case you hadn't heard . . . nobody in America is bitter  . . . lol
It's a nice thing that our future President can play ball.  OK, he can't bowl, but neither can I.  It's a harder game than it looks.  That's why so many people bowl for fun and so few are good.  Basketball is also hard to play and involves a lot more activity.  The time when I could keep up with the game is long passed and I'm a few years younger than Obama.  Kudos to keeping in shape enough to run with the college guys even if it was just for a little while.

Maybe Obama could talk about the obesity epidemic and tailor his national health insurance program to address the issue.  If people had inexpensive access to health clubs as part of their health insurance they could get into better shape.  Health club memberships are out of my price range and I would use and have used them if and when I could afford them.  What is it that they say: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?"  At least make health club memberships tax deductible.  That would be great!

FirstRead reported this yesterday.  Here is the Video of the 82-year old NC woman asking Obama a question.

This carries alot more weight than the Easley endorsement.
The man will be such a cool President?

Oh, please... we've had one for the last 7 years with whom the majority of voters said, "I'd like to have a beer with him."

What a convincing rationale for electing the President of the United States.

Give me competence, thank you very much.
Maybe he should join the Bulls and drop out of the race. We need a president who can fight for the  restoration of this country's greatness. Obama is supposed to be a different kind of politician but goes for all the tricks and photo opps.
Very interesting event from a campaign event yesterday:

I posted some comments on Wright until I read the transcripts of his most recent appearance at the NPR. His earlier message had focused on differences and I was extremely critical.

I would enjoin everone to seek all the facts before judging the totality. (Particularly the question and answer sessions).

But inspite of that I still dont think he's running for president nor does BO share his political and world view.
Steve Turner, Cedar Falls,Iowa..
Best laugh of the day so far!
Just need to mention the new Indiana Survey USA poll out today. Hillary Clinton  leads 52% to 43%, with 2% unsure and 3% for others. Plus,The Washington Post reported over the weekend how, as a state senator, he tried to help a supporter and former employer get a tourism contract. Now we can add tourismgate to Wrightgate, Bittergate, Ayersgate,Rezkogate and handgungate to his resume.
Its funny but I didn't originally comment on the basketball thing (although I think its great he got to play with the Tarheels!!) but reading the comments I was reminded of one thing...this past Winter one of the things I had my kids do (more my son but then my daughter and they are young) is to have them begin to play basketball inside at the local Y gym.

The reason, aside from the fitness aspect of the long Winter, is that I told them that if they were comfortable playing basketball, they could always find people to play with (at the gym, on the playground courts, at school).  They could always make friends as long as they could pick up a basketball and play with some competence.  Its a fun team sport and so easy to find pick-up games.

Basketball is a great equalizer and a universal sport...it is easily played anywhere there's a playground or gym or backyard with a hoop and a BB.

take care,
Congratulations to Obama for KY delegate pickup.  By the way I love Keith O.  Thanks
If Barack hit the three it must have been in the script!!  Geez, but doesn't he hem and haw when deviating from the written word.
Sen. Obama was missing his shots just like he's missing the point of this campaign, which is about substance and results over style and flashy attempts
Obama will need to keep hitting those three pointers to overcome all those kitchen sinks and Wright's wrongs and score a victory in IN and a knockout in NC.
Hmmm-Obama says he likes basketball and plays basketball. He eats in diners and cafes with surrounded by regular people and gets hammered when he wants to eat his waffle. He bowls badly, like most people. I know because I saw him.
HRC says she knows how to shoot and goes to church but I haven't seen her do either one yet, and the last time I saw her in an eating venue with real people, she was chugging a beer & a $6 shot of booze. And now her appearance at Bill's fraud trial gets delayed too, boy that's funny. How come nobody I know ever got a six month postponement in court? And how come Obama is spattered in Rev. Wright's mess and HRC isn't getting spattered in Bill's mess? Hmmm.......
Yeah I'm bitter-and it's NOT Obama that's making me that way because from what I see he acts a lot more like the people than she does. Oh-I'm a college educated white woman BTW, and I'm voting for the person I think is better for the job-race and gender are and should be totally meaningless.
Obama 08, baby!
All of y'all saying this is irrelevant understand nothing about North Carolina.  (or Indiana for that matter)  Basketball is EVERYTHING there.  It's blue-collar nirvana land for Obama.  The fact that this guy can even play on the same court with one of the top 4 teams in the nation speaks volumes to both his stamina and his ability to resonate with "regular people."  This is like Hillary downing shots in PA -- it earns him a lot of respect points.  Bravo!

And an implicit "endorsement" from Roy Williams ("the next president of the United States") trumps the hell out of Pansey-a$$ Easley any day of the week!
Where are the videos on the news programs? Are only bowling videos worthy?
Re: Ron Indiana' comments about the center of Basketball.  You left out Kansas, this years National Champions. KU's first coach (Naismith invented the game.  Phog Allen coached Adolp Rupp, Dean Smith among others.
Perhaps he should stick to playing Basketball instead of making 'empty' promises he knows he cannot deliver on!
Ralph from Texas ****

" Well, i hope he can play basketball better than he can bowl...speaking of black basketball players, that seems to be an untapped source of new tax revenues...talk about windfall profits for not providing any economic good "

****

That is such a RACIST thing to say.
You know this is a free country .. and we have free speech.
But this is a POLITICAL forum.
If you , either as a republican or as a Hillary supporter, don't have any critic about Obama ... DO NOT RESULT TO BIGOTRY.
It just tarnishes the forum and believe me it doesn't help.
Cool! I'd like to see McCain or Clinton try that! Hahaha. No, I'm not supporting Obama because he's the most athletic candidate (though he is)--I am supporting him because he is the BEST candidate, hands down, and he's the one who can get our country back on track.
Why don't he get off the damn courts and start talking about some real issues. I supported this guy earlier but now it seems all he's interested in is eating waffles undisturbed and playing hoops. Does he think running the country is going to be a "slam dunk."
