A do-nothing Congress?

Do-nothing Congress? Well, not quite.

On this very day your US House will vote to express its "sense" that "there should be established a National Watermelon Month." Later this afternoon, the people's House will move to consider whether to similarly express themselves over "National Funeral Director and Mortician Recognition Day." And then, in a separate bill, it will weigh in on setting aside a day of recognition for this nation's letter carriers.

So when the president and Republicans say that this Congress isn't doing much this year, they may have ground to stand on. But that isn't necessarily at variance with what usually happens in an election year -- especially a presidential election cycle where, no matter what, there will be a new administration come January.

So far this year, the stimulus package has passed, and that's about it. It has been slow going, no question. Behind the scenes, the Democratic leaders are still wrestling with the question of how to handle the president's latest request for war funding, this time for $108 billion. They are looking at legislation to ease the housing crunch. The farm bill has been on the verge of closure for weeks, if not months. And Democrats are clamoring for a second stimulus package for the economy, this time focused on extending unemployment insurance, infrastructure spending, and other items that they failed to pass in the first version.

But none of this is going to be easy. And on the fundamental job of Congress -- to pass spending bills to keep the government functioning -- it is quite possible, if not likely, that Democrats will simply punt it all into next year, thereby giving the new president, who they obviously hope will be one of their own, a clean slate on which to enact new policies and priorities.

Cut the Government to the bone, too much wasteful spending in this country, Bush has never been a true conservative, cut the government and then our taxes...
Sen. John McCain is proposing tax cuts that would either cause the federal deficit require unprecedented spending cuts equal to one-third of federal spending on domestic programs. More than $650 billion in tax cuts a year, much of it benefiting corporations and upper-income families.
McCain's Economic Plan: Fuzzy or Sound?

WHAT! A PLAN THAT INCLUDES less FEDERAL SPENDING.

Reduce the federal spending by 650 BILLION dollars???

Wow, and all Barack can offer is 500 Billion in extra spending!!!

Your right Jeff, what a choice! 650 Billion is savings, or 500 Billion in spending.

When you put it that way even a Democrat can figure it out.

And for aiming the tax cuts at the middle and upper class. It sure is more effective that a tax cut ONLY the poor because the poor don't pay diddly for taxes!!! A couple percent of nothing is nothing. You want impact give back a couple of percent when the family pays 30% in taxes. That is your impact. And when the upper and middle class feel good about money then they support the charities that should help the poor not the government which enables them.
The do nothing Bush has forced the congress to do nothing the last 2 years.  Everytime they try to do something he vetoes it.  It only makes sense to wait until the Bush dynasty leaves office to accomplish the important business of the government.  I think the congress and the new president (Obama) can and will work together to change the government and help the people through these tough times.
george bush is an imbecile...arrogant ignoramus, hell bent on blaming everyone but himself or his republican cronies
as far as Im concerned all politicians are responsible for the mess this country is in...no one wants to work for the good of this country, only for the good of themselves, their party or the lobbyists they really work for...

god bless america!
God! it must be a quiet news day it this gets anyone's attention.  I think Chris Matthews should leave Pennsylvania, go to North Carolina and watch Barack play some basketball.  That's how Barack makes contact with Tar Heels and Hoosiers. Chris, it's not about Rev. Wright or "bitter".  It's about which candidate can you believe is telling the truth. Hint: It's not Hillary.
A report on the do-nothing Congress from the do-nothing media! HILLARY-OUS!

Question:Why do we need so many channels if they all broadcast the EXACT SAME "news" and analysis?
Hillary wants to 'do it' with Obama on a flatbed???  I understand why Obama declined the offer!!!! hahaha!!!
Of course Bush would say that! He's just trying to get us to think it wasn't him, so the dem's can't say 4 more years of Bush in their ads.  NOT working!
National Press Club president Sylvia Smith responded today to a Daily News article reporting that club member Barbara Reynolds, a Hillary Clinton supporter, organized yesterday's breakfast talk with Dr. Jeremiah Wright Jr.

Smith said by phone this morning that she still doesn't know if Reynolds supports Clinton, and doesn't care either way.

"Reverend Wright is newsworthy, period," Smith said.

But Wright wasn't as newsworthy two years ago when Reynolds first pitched Barack Obama's controversial pastor as a potential speaker for the press club, according to Smith.

At that time, the speaker's committee--of which Reynolds is now a part of, but wasn't at the time--didn't move forward with selecting Wright.

"He wasn't newsworthy then in the broader context," Smith said.
Of course his lead is slipping. He stands shoulder to shoulder with Pelosi and Reid. They don't care about the citizen's of America.
All they want to do is get even with Pres. Bush at any cost.
Pelosi and Reid are the cause of the high gas prices, high food prices, high energy prices and the housing situation. They have sabotaged the economy to spite Bush. To make the Republicans look bad. But it seems that they have cut off their noses to spite themselves.
Americans are smart and informed. We know what is going on.
Pelosi and Reid's actions will only convince the voters that Democrats can't be trusted. And we will put a Republican in the White House to spite them!!
Typical gutless republicans complaining about the economy. Funny, I thought all those tax cuts W signed into law was suppose to create thousands of jobs. Funny, it did not happen. The only thing you can count on from republican economics is a recession and the rich getting richer. That is republican economics 101. Every republican president has had a recession. This idiot president said the tax cuts and capital gains cuts were going to create all those thousands of jobs. Where the hell are they? Republicnas give millionaires back 200,000 dollars for every 1 million dollars they have. Where all the jobs the republicans say tax cuts create. Giving money to the rich does no american good except the rich. The rich do not create jobs, they are creating wealth for themselves. If what the republicans say about how great our economy is with all the tax cuts, then why are we in a recession? I was told by the republicans that cutting taxes was going to create jobs and produce a booming economy. Where are the jobs? If tax cuts are so good, how come every time we do it we get a recession? So people do not listen to republicans. They only care about themselves and the rich. They hate the poor and blame everything on everyone else. Name the last time any republican was responsible for anything. Republicans think they are above the law. Thus they are never responsible for their decesions.  When are you gutless cowardly republicans going to admit rebulican tax cuts only benefit the wealthy. Tax cuts for the wealthy does not produce one new job and every tax cut ends with a recession. The only reason we got out of the last recession was because interest rates dropped to 1%. W's tax cuts did not stimulate the economy enough to change or get us out of the last recession. But once the interest rates got to 1% then the consumer and businesses went drunk with cheap money. Republican economic policies only help the rich, produce few jobs and always ends in recessions. Is this the type of economy you want? Then vote republican. If you like jobs, healthy economy, and your fellow americans then vote democrat. It is as simple as this.
Shame on Bush, trying to blame others for his mess!
When is he going to take responsibility for dragging us into this quagmire?  The economy isn't broken because of Congress, it is broken because Bush's math doesn't add up.  No leader in the HISTORY OF CIVILIZATION has ever cut taxes while fighting a war!  We've spent TRILLIANS in Iraq and Afghanistan-- where do you think that money's coming from?  Bush's stupid unnecessary wars siphoned the money out of our pockets and flushed it straight down the sandy toilet that is the Middle East.  We might as well all skip having kids, because America is going to be broke for the next three generations, no matter WHO wins the next election!
We will always have a do nothing congress. Mr Obama should cut ther salaries by 50% and no more pay raises until they something accomplished. The Gitmo, free them and drop them in the middle of the Pacific Ocean or put them on the ROCK in SF Bay Area. ongress needs to stop saying not in my back yard. Take me up on my ideal. We have alot of smart congressional members who are idiots that do noy care about us taxpayers, so wake up american. If congress dabates everything, Mr Obama should find away to replace all members in Congress.
