McCain on health care

Posted: Tuesday, April 29, 2008 12:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
TAMPA, Fla. -- Despite receiving top billing during McCain’s weeklong health-care tour, this morning’s speech at the University of Southern Florida featured only an expansion of the healthcare proposal McCain has been advocating on the stump for months.

Even McCain’s top policy advisor Doug Holtz-Eakin had little to preview during a sit down with reporters last night saying, “Remember, it is April, and the election’s November, so not everything will happen tomorrow or this week.”

When asked what was new, Holtz-Eakin said, “There’s more examples on all fronts of what he thinks of as the personal responsibility and prevention issues, treatment of chronic diseases and insurance market issues.”

The center of McCain’s health-care proposal is the creation of a refundable health-care tax credit of $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families to go toward offsetting the cost of health insurance. The tax credit would be available to everyone, and partial funding would come from eliminating the tax credit currently given only to employees.

“You simply choose the insurance provider that suits you best,” McCain said this morning. “By mail or online, you would then inform the government of your selection. And the money to help pay for your health care would be sent straight to that insurance provider.”

Individuals would be free to remain covered under their employers’ plan, and employers would continue to receive tax exemptions for insurance provided to employees. The McCain campaign asserts that providing an option other than employer-based health care “would help change the whole dynamic of the current system, putting individuals and families back in charge, and forcing companies to respond with better service at lower cost.”

Additionally, McCain repeated his proposal for increased insurance portability and called for allowing individuals to purchase insurance across state lines. Pushing back against the notion that his plan would make it difficult for those with preexisting conditions to find an insurance provider on the open market, McCain said he would work with states to establish Guaranteed Access Plans -- even proposing a government-funded GAP.

“Federal assistance could be provided to a nonprofit GAP that operated under the direction of a board that included all stakeholders groups -- legislators, insurers, business and medical community representatives, and, most importantly, patients,” McCain said. “The board would contract with insurers to cover patients who have been denied insurance and could join with other state plans to enlarge pools and lower overhead costs. There would be reasonable limits on premiums, and assistance would be available for Americans below a certain income level.”

Hillary wants to 'do it' with Obama on a flatbed???  I understand why Obama declined the offer!!!! hahaha!!!
The government has no money, yet these three politicians (BO, HRC, JM) are making more and more promises that they will not keep and not deliver.
When asked what was new, Holtz-Eakin said, “There’s more examples on all fronts of what he thinks of as the personal responsibility and prevention issues, treatment of chronic diseases and insurance market issues.”

Children's Hospital, is here in Pittsburgh, Pa. How does McCain reconcile these little patients with his 'persanl responsibiltiy' rhetoric?
And how does this plan help those who cannot afford insurance or those deemed uninsurable by the insurance companies?  That's right, it doesn't!

Hillary:  will take it out of our paychecks regardless of the cost.
McCain:   will keep it the same.
Obama:    will make it available and affordable to everyone.

Pick one.
Does McCain have any clue about what insurance costs to purchase?

He is totally out of touch with what the rest of us deal with.
For a 71 year old to put forth 'don't let yourself get sick', as a platform is disingenuous. He can't raise his arms above his head because his joints are so frozen!
I love that McWhine likes to talk about "personal responsibility" in healthcare, since Congress is the closest thing we have to socialized medicine in this country.  Besides being rich, his healthcare needs are taken care of ME, and YOU, the taxpayer who can't pay for our OWN healthcare.  How's THAT for "personal responsibilit"?!?
Wow, Mccain is a deep thinker, what an innovator.  It's no wonder he finished fifth from the bottom of his college class.

Having the government help pay for our medical costs does nothing at all to eliminate the ridiculous inefficiencies that the medical/insurance industry is rife with.  We need someone who will push for a total re-engineering of the system.  Our medical costs are out of line because of the waste in the system.  Free market economics are not driving out the waste, so the goverment must do its part.

McCain is a little long in the tooth to be so callous about geriatric sicknesses. He's too old to be a boomer, but, he knows what old age chronic conditons are. He's rich, and could care less about having your prescription benefits coverage run out before the new fiscal year. In December, or before, depending on your insurance, prescriptions that cost a total of 45.00 per month, can cost more than 280.00.
And exactly how many under or uninsured people does he think that would help?  Hmmm, if we lost our (inadequate but better than nothing) healthcare insurance from my husband's part-time job (a union job, his day job which he changed in September still hasn't signed on with a health insurance co.), then I doubt that we would be able to find coverage for our fairly but not perfectly healthy family of four for what we could afford to pay, even with the tax credit.

So this helps us (and people like us) how?
THIS is why the prolonged campaign hurts the Dems;

We would be nailing MCCain to the wall with policies like this.....

NYDN (Louis): Is Jeremiah Wright a colossal disaster for Barack Obama or a press trick?

Errol Louis

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright couldn't have done more damage to Barack Obama's campaign if he had tried. And you have to wonder if that's just what one friend of Wright wanted.

Shortly before he rose to deliver his rambling, angry, sarcastic remarks at the National Press Club Monday, Wright sat next to, and chatted with, Barbara Reynolds.

A former editorial board member at USA Today, she runs something called Reynolds News Services and teaches ministry at the Howard University School of Divinity. (She is an ordained minister).

It also turns out that Reynolds - introduced Monday as a member of the National Press Club "who organized" the event - is an enthusiastic Hillary Clinton supporter.

On a blog linked to her Web site- reynoldsworldnews.blogspot.com
Reynolds said in a February post: "My vote for Hillary in the Maryland primary was my way of saying thank you" to Clinton and her husband for the successes of Bill Clinton's presidency.

The same post criticized Obama's "Audacity of Hope" theme: "Hope by definition is not based on facts," wrote Reynolds. It is an emotional expectation. Things hoped for may or may not come. But help based on experience trumps hope every time."

In another blog entry, Reynolds gives an ever-sharper critique of Obama: "It is a sad testimony that to protect his credentials as a unifier above the fray, the senator is fueling the media characterization that Rev. Dr. Wright is some retiring old uncle in the church basement."

I don't know if Reynolds' eagerness to help Wright stage a disastrous news conference with the national media was a way of trying to help Clinton - my queries to Reynolds by phone and e-mail weren't returned yesterday - but it's safe to say she didn't see any conflict between promoting Wright and supporting Clinton.

It's hard to exaggerate how bad the actual news conference was. Wright, steeped in an honorable, fiery tradition of Bible-based social criticism, cheapened his arguments and his movement by mugging for the cameras, rolling his eyes, heaping scorn on his critics and acting as if nobody in the room was learned enough to ask him a question.

Wright has, unquestionably, been caricatured and vilified unfairly. The feeding programs, prison outreach and other social services he has built over more than 30 years are commendable, and his reading of the Judeo-Christian tradition as an epic story of people trying to escape slavery is far more right than wrong - and not something to be caricatured or compressed into a 10-second sound bite.

But Wright should have known - and his friend and ally Reynolds, a media professional, surely knew - that bickering with the press can only harm Wright and, by extension, Obama.

I hope that wasn't their goal.
McCain's Health Care plan is worse than Dubya's? Is this less important than the color of Obama's skin? Hillary did not get it done in 15 years of opportunities, as first lady, and as a US Senator. I'll going to give Barack a shot.
What about the NEWS OF THE DAY? Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has requested nearly $2.3 billion in federal earmarks for 2009, almost three times the largest amount received by a single senator this year. SHAME ON HER! Come on MSNBC, give us the real BIG news, please...
The proper name is the University of SOUTH Florida.  Please correct.  Thank you!
Mr. McDraft thinks people are not the responsibility of the Federal Gov., instead they should help themselves.  When he institutes the draft at least some will get Health Care.  Oh I'm sorry, he doesn't care about how our brave young men are cared for.  Shame on Mr. McDraft.

Bob, Chicago

McCain is going to make a real poor showing when he is standing toe to toe with Barack!!!

Dems 08
saaay...that tax cut will put us on a par with the health care available in the rest of the industrialized free world...or, maybe not.

for sure, though, no matter what, i don't want universal health care. i much prefer health care that is controlled by kindly insurance companies.

jeez, if george mccain gets elected, i hope i don't get sick.
The latest poll from North Carolina confirms that Clinton is cutting into Obama's lead meaningfully -- the second poll in two days to do that. Full roundup: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/04/polls-and-superdelegates-some-good-news.html
Chuck, tell us more about HRC's $2.3 billion in federal earmarks for 2009, or Obama's best proposal for reducing gas prices. Those are the most important issues for us in NC..
The full premium (what I pay plus what my employer pays) for the health insurance plan I get through my job is over $13,000.  It would cost me over $2000/month to get a similar plan on the open market, assuming I could even get it, being over 50.  So what are LOW-income families who don't even pay $5000 in income taxes supposed to do for health insurance?  Are they supposed to just up and die?  I guess in Republican America, the answer is yes.
As a person with a pre-existing condition, a $2500 tax credit would do nothing.  $200/month?  If only I COULD get health insurance even close to being that cheap!

Self-responsibility???
I was in a car accident that was not my fault.  I'm damn lucky to be alive--and I've fought like hell to re-learn how to do everything (including swallowing, breathing, walking, younameit.)

I'm glad as hell as I had health insurance at the time of my accident.  But shortly after, I went through a divorce--and could no longer be covered under my husband's insurance.  (Although I was offered the 'opportunity' to purchase his healthcare plan at the individual rate of $760 per month.)  My income only allows for basic needs to be met...and health insurance at $760/month would've meant no roof over the heads of my children and myself and no food in our stomachs.

Really, John??  Self-responsibility and free-market are all you got for me??
a personal responsibility plan, which translates into if you are personally rich you will have responsible coverage, this coming from a man who of course doesn't pay for his healthcare, but has the taxpayer do it, we have socialized corporate welfare in this country where taxpayers are forced to bail-out corrupt financial services, because we would not want the wealthy to lose any money, but using taxpayer money to help taxpayers, well that would just be ridiculous
More window dressing.  This is just perception management.  Yawn zzzzzz
I don't want a "fighter" in the White House, I want a "leader".  The last debate told me all I need to know, he was gracious to her and her gaffes, while she went for the jugular.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, the gay population will still be 5-10% of the population, they will be living among us as tax paying productive members of society.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, abortion will still be available, for the poor it will be "back alley" and risky, for the rich it will be overseas.  The goal is to make it rare by sensibly teaching prevention along with morals.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, prayer will still be said in school, especially before tests and sporting events.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, the second amendment will still allow lawful gun ownership.

So this time, Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Mccain- the only reason you will get any votes is because their is a small group of people that think they have to vote for the republican because they are anti-abortion.  Which is exactly why you changed your stance.  Well, that is not going to work in this election.  The pubbies have hurt too many people  with their "tax cuts" and greed.  The rest of the stuff you talk about is so useless.
McCain=Booooooooooooooring!
That buying insurance across state lines sounds good till you realize you cant even buy car insurance across state lines.
INSANITY:

Notice how Hillary (knowing PA would fall into her column but started to worry) stated any kind of win whether single digits or double digits was a win that would give her momentum. Now the Hillary camp is stating that if she can keep Obama's win in NC down to 10% to 15% it would be a win for her also knowing that NC will fall into Obama's column.

Hillary (and some in the media) called Hillary's 9+% win in PA a great victory for her. Now watch how Hillary and those in the media who support her as  Chris Matthews will try to spin the NC primary by stating an Obama victory by 10% - 15% will be a great victory for Hillary.

Also watch how Hillary and some in the media as Chris Matthews will try and ignore NC on the night of the primary when Obama wins, and attempt to spend the entire evening and the following morning talking about Indiana which will most likely be much closer.

Hillary and those on her campaign staff are insane. Chris Matthews is insane. It's time to rid ourselves of all this insanity.

Oh, regarding McCain and health care. McCain has no clue.
