More on Obama's press conference

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Obama opened a somber, nearly half-hour press conference this afternoon by saying he was outraged and saddened by Wright's comments to the National Press Club in Washington the previous day and that the Wright who spoke those words was not the man he had met 20 years ago.

Wright has been a particularly thorny issue for Obama, since snippets of his sermons -- which many viewed as divisive and unpatriotic -- aired repeatedly on YouTube and cable television last month in the lead-up to the Pennsylvania primary. The remarks threatened to alienate the white, working-class voters Obama has been attempting to woo away from Clinton in recent contests, with little success.

Obama has framed his candidacy -- or it has been framed for him -- in "post-racial" terms and many of his supporters have been inspired by a campaign that cast itself as one about unifying people across ethnicities, creeds, and political parties. A close association with a man whose message is seen as divisive would damage that over-arching theme, something the senator acknowledged.

Obama said he had given his pastor the benefit of the doubt during his speech on race in Philadelphia and had spoken to him after delivering that speech, though he would not elaborate on their conversation. But the senator said there was no excuse for Wright's comments yesterday linking the US government to the creation of AIDS, praising Louis Farrakhan, and connecting US wartime efforts to terrorism.

"His comments were not only divisive and destructive, but I believe that they end up giving comfort to those who prey on hate and I believe that they do not portray accurately the perspective of the Black Church," he said. "They certainly don’t portray accurately my values and beliefs and if Rev Wright thinks that’s political posturing, as he put it, then he doesn't know me very well and based on his remarks yesterday, well I may not know him as well as I thought either."

Speaking slowly, deliberately and at times sternly, Obama repeatedly said Wright's comments contradicted everything his campaign was about, all that he had worked for throughout his life and his vision for America, while acknowledging his former pastor had a right to make his views known.

He called Wright's "performance" an exploitative spectacle, and while he praised the work of Wright's ministry in the community, he said his relationship with the man had suffered "great damage". Still, he declined to say it had been irreparably damaged, instead focusing on how he defined his relationship with the pastor.

"I know one thing that he said was true was that he wasn't, you know, he was never my quote-unquote spiritual adviser. He was never my spiritual mentor; he was, uh, he was my pastor," Obama said. "And so to some extent how ... the press characterized in the past that relationship, I think, wasn’t accurate. But he was somebody who was my pastor and married Michelle and I and baptized my children and prayed with us at uh, when we announced this race - and so I’m disappointed."

The senator declined to speculate on the impact the Wright issue would have on the race, saying the election was in a few days "so we’ll find out."

The fact remains that people who will still criticize Obama after this will never vote for him no matter what anyway.  They are just looking for a reason to hold on to.

What else do they want Obama to do?  Do they demand same scrutiny from Clinton of McCain?
A little too late. Now he denounces after his political career is on the line.  He didn’t know about Farrahkan before?  None of Wright’s views?  Please. Wright coming out is a no winning situation for Obama. If it’s true he never heard of Wright’s anti American stands for 20 years one has to question Obama’s awareness and judgment.  .  If he knew of Wrights hate speeches and denied it then it comes down to just plain lying and serious lack of character.
I know all too well what it feels like to have to end a friendship after 20 years.  You want to give the benefit of the doubt, but when push comes to shove, it becomes necessary to end the relationship and move on.

I think I'll go make another contribution to Obama's campaign.

Wahooooooo Finally this guys true colors are showing.  Latest poll has Hillary up by 9 in indiana and cut his lead in north Carolina to 5!!!!!  Bye Bye Obama
Let's not be confused here - which apparently the media already is. Rev. Wright has been saying the exact same things for TWENTY YEARS! It's not as if he just starting spewing this vile hate speech in the last two days. Obama is only denouncing him now because it is hurting his candidacy. I would like to know why Obama stuck around for the last twenty years?

Obama loves to answer Hillary's "experience" argument with a "judgment" argument. Denouncing Rev. Wright after a loss in PA and in the run up to NC and IN does not demonstrate good judgment. Denouncing him years ago - at the first sign of racist or anti-Semitic language would have demonstrated good judgment. Unfortunately for Obama, it's far too late for that.

This move was purely political and I no longer have any respect for Obama as a result. My copy of The Audacity of Hope goes in the trash tonight.
It's a shame that it has come to this.  I think his pastor was given the shaft by the Clinton's and the Republicans.  Yes, he said some outrageous things, but I'd be willing to bet that they were delivered in the context of sermons based on scripture from the Old Testament prophets.  In those passages, it clearly teaches that a country that doesn't demonstrate justice for the poor is subject to God's judgment.  (I'm a white upper middle class evangelical, byt he way.)

Anyway, hopefully Rev Wright will quit stirring the pot so that Obama can do his best to put the issue behind him.

Obama again showed himself to be the sort of dignified, humane, and human leader that we could be proud to call our president.
Hopefully, MSNBC will now get to the crux of this story by responding to Bill Bradley's suggestion that you investigate why Rev. Wright spoke out now.
This is an urgent matter, given today's Daily News story that points to an avid and active  Clinton supporter, Barbara Reynolds, as the "organizer" of the National Press Club event.
Please look into this. You owe it to America.
American's of pure heart, and spirit are decidedly understanding, and completely rational. America is ready for a new kind of politics, and a new kind of politicain.

We love you Obama
Like I said before..Obama is genuinely angry. I'm sure he spoke to his wife about this..and when seeking POTUS it is true, your old ties are often damaged or cut. He seeks to represent a nation and his former civilian life...along with those who were part of it...will change. It's a personal sacrifice Obama is risking; I hope the media finally "gets it" and quit parading Wright around in front of cameras. He's a private citizen with his own views...they are not suitable discussion for the mangnitude of this election.
I wanted what its like for journalists to report on only half stories and half truths.  Why don't the other canidates have to answer for the state of race-relations in this country.  If you're reporting things this way bc its what people want to hear, then doesn't it make the story more entertainment than news.  I'd like to hear from the other canidates their views on race-relations in this country.  And how they deal with their controverisal pastors (e.g. Hagee).
Senator Obama demonstrated (again) today why I support him.  He's like an All Star athlete who you can always count on to prevail when the pressure is on.  I WANT THAT IN MY NEXT PRESIDENT!!  It's incredible that the media is spending so much time focusing on what someone unrelated to the campaign has said.  There isn't one iota of proof showing that Senator Obama believes in any of those things, so why are we wasting the American people's time?  The answer is that the Republicans and Hillary can't beat Obama on substance so they're playing to the fears and ignorance that motivates so many voters in this country.
I think it's outrageous that a man like that is linked to the campaign. What he did was an embarrassment to himself, his family and the country. To think that anyone associated with him could ever win the White House is a joke. And she's married to him! Not only that but she has him actively campaigning for her. I think that...uh...er...oops
Well I am sad for him it has come to this but seeing the way Wright has acted lately it may be time.

For all the nay sayers...just remember if your judged by the actions of those around you and not what you yourself do then we must also judge Hillary Clinton by the people around her. Including...her husband's history of NAFTA, CAFTA, impeachment, Monica Lewinsky, Whitewater and other ongoing investigations. She has been under his influence for over 30 years.

Let's move on to the real issues in this campaign and get a new president.

Obama 08
The man threw obama under the buys. And so
Barack has the right to throw him under the bus too.
Now he's saying he was never a "spiritual adviser" to him?  I thought he was taken off some religious board of his earlier?  I'm totally confused.  Every time he has to explain his relationship with him, his story changes!  What is it with this guy - what's the real story???

Barack Obama is going to be the Democratic nominee. NEXT.
Too Late Obama..you him same? You gave to him for years...
Obama is the biggest fake in politics.
Barack is just too good. The man is like some superstar or some super athlete. When exactly you want him to raise his game and win the tournament, he does just that. This man is incredible, brilliant and sensitive. He cut his reverend minister a slack, but when the reverend abused it, he slammed him. That is what we want in  a leader. Show restraint when necessary and used the stick when the situation demands it
Obama showed again today why he will never be ready to be President.
This took cajones. Something other candidates seem to lack. He still has my support.
What we heard before was - When is he going to distance himself from Wright?

HE has done that.

Now we hear - What took him so long?

Excuses, excuses.  Just looking for a reason not to vote for this fine American.
After 20 years, Obama and Wright do no know each other? Sure, if you believe that, I've got some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you. The circus continues!
Obama never called Wright his mentor and spiritual adviser. The media did. Let's quote this man right. He has siad he is like family. And one this we know is that BO is not very political (like wont sign up to the panderous holiday gas tax of 18 cents - heck we were buying this stuff at $2 a short while ago, will speak his mind on why he thinks folks do not vote their economic interest but rather issues such as guns, and would not initially denounce a pastor whose political views did not represent his mixed heritage and inclusive background).

These two guys can not be more different from their utterances (Baracks since 2004):

1. One is a lawmaker and aspiring president and the other a pastor

2. one is even tempered, and throughful whether he's up or down, attacked or praised while the other is flamboyant in speech and style and contorversial and appears attention-seeking.

3. One talks constantly about similarity (no red or blue states but he united states, we are one under the stars and stipes, coming together to solve common problems and bring down common obstacles)m the other quickly delves into talking about differences (although here he did end on reconciliation).

4. One is black and focuses on black issues, the other is from black and white background and brought up by white parents and focuses on all issues.

Let anyone who agrees with everyone close to them that they willingly associate with remain critical on this board after the thoughful denounciation today for which Wright gave him no choice based on questioning his political integrity! One thing we have seen from Obama is whether it hurts or not he speaks his beliefs (as with the gas tax and earlier explanation of why Wright is the way he is, or why voters do not vote their econmoic interest but rather vote focused on less central issues). We should not let him lose because he is not a panderer and a great politician that tells us what we want every 4 years.

How can he sit in church for 20 years and listen to this man. WE all do this every week. CAtholics listening to priests that are rumored and later confirmed as pedophiles. Christians listening to controversial pastors. We all take the best and feed spiritually and sometimes leave behind a few of the social stuff.

By the way, Wright was not saying the studd of the past 3 days (and not all was bad) for 20 x 52 weeks x 60 minutes. The worst of his previous statements ere condensed in 2 minutes.
Why don't MSNBC reporters LISTEN to what people are saying, rather than picking the sound bites to comment on.  Obama clearly stated that he hadn't seen or read Wright's latest comments (he's a little busy with a campaign, I think), yet Andrea Mitchell is wondering why he didn't speak up yesterday.  Ugh.  A 4th grader has better attention and retention

And Chris Matthews hasn't got a clue as to what goes on in any church except the white Catholic ones he's gone to.  He shouldn't be projecting his expectations on another church he's never been to.  It's not journalism if you don't ask questions with an open mind.
As a Democrat 1st, and a Clinton supporter 2nd, I felt for Obama as he continued to distance himself from his former preacher and/or "spititual mentor". I think he did what was difficult & probably politically necessary... and did a good job!

But, if we are to open a National dialogue on race and race relations in this country, we may have to address the "radical reactionary" element that was present at the National Press Club for Wright's performence.

And, who are we, or Obama, to say that this view is outside of the mainstream if we have never experienced the level of racism that Wright referred to and to which his audience cheered... it MUST be shared by at least a few... and that MAY be too many. But,if our eventual goal is to eliminate racism; we will very definitely have to resolve the premise & perceptions on which it is built. That may mean, as Wright suggested, a National apology for slavery and the Jim Crow eras. It may mean that we take a better look at how we are currently talking about race.... OR ignoring it!

Wright's view is (dare I call it) bitter? But not in the way that we have discredited the feeling of late - but as Gary Younge writes in an article in THE NATION magazine entitled "The Obama Effect" as a member of the Old School of Black Leaders - Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Andy Young - Even Donna Brazil & Donna Edwards seem to have been left out of this young "transitional" Obama movement. Bitter may very well be the feeling that results after all the suffering of the last 100 yrs to watch a "new generation", like Obama, reap the rewards without the investment.

And, instead of being included as heirs to the civil rights movement - they of Wright's generation watch as Younge calls it this new generation - ("...itself a crude political construct built on wishful thinking...") determined to move beyond the mood and methods of their forebears... writes author Terence Samuel in TNE AMERICAN PROSPECT. That would seem to leave behind an entire generation (Wright's?) - the ones who did all the HARD WORK of the civil rights movement!

So, where we all may agree with Obama's decision to "get past this issue" it still leaves the "dream of reconciliation" not just unrealized, as Younge suggested; but now deferred to another time or place or... election. Or, until it is politically expedient to do so.

And until then I STILL do not understand why Race, or Gender for that matter, do NOT qualify as legitimate ISSUES in this campaign - both certainly have been part of our National Landscape and National nightmare longer than ALL of the current more popular issues!

But theses are 2 issues that will NEVER be able to be resolved in 1 minute snippets and 10 second sound bytes... so let them run their course in our news cycles... even if "bitter" is all we come away with, at least we are no longer dismissing or sweeping the issues under the political rug!
Class act!  Nothing but a class act!!
John McCain's "political mentor" was Barry Goldwater who voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, should we make a big deal about that?
First of all there is no such thing as"the
Black church," Why is it so very hard for
journalist to understand, Blacks are no more a
monolithic group than all White people are 'David
Duke." Second, as the old folks used to say,
Rev wright 'has gone round the bend.'!! Third,
this election is not about religious leaders, if
I'm mistaken about that - let's hear some
research about Pat Robertson and the other
'outworldly nuts that compromise the right wing.
Fourth, maybe Rev Wright was right -'we are
stuck on stupid,' if we allow this nut to
distract us from the importance of this
election!!
If we are to judge a person by those around him or her, then Hillary is an adulterer cos his husband was one, and she is still with the husband. Bill had sex with Monica and lied. Hillary is still with him, and am not suprised that many people still think that Hillary is also a congenital lier. Is it a fair  conclusion?
Let's see, if Wright said Obama did not hear his comments and Obama said he did not hear those comments, how can anyone say he did and then question his judgment. The parties who have the requisite knowledge for this fact have spoken...there is no reason to believe either is lying.  No matter what you want to say about the guy's politics, Wright sure has been honest.

This is so pathetic...many people won't vote for him because they think he is muslim, many because he is black (half), many because of ties to hippies, I mean radicals from the 60s, and many because of this whole Rev Wright debacle.  None of these should be a consideration and yet, here they are.

McCain does not want to keep this door open cause Hagee, phew, there is a gem there.

This republican is voting for Obama because he is not in bed with the special interests...that is how we will get things done!!!
For those of us Obama supporters who have, like Obama, given Wright "the benefit of the doubt" and even been fascinated and edified and moved by some of his views, the word "saddened" used by Obama to describe his feelings stamd out as he describes something of a divorce from Wright.  Now knee deep in religion and race Obama wades on.  As an evangelical, I have perceived a genuine and poignant faith struggle going on that I have related to at a deep level.  I hope other evangelicals join me in supporting Obama. We can let go of the abortion issue that conscientiously inspired many of us to vote for Bush... Alito and Roberts now balance the Supreme Court. In any case Christians can not be counted upon to vote as a block this time... the war, the environment, the down-trodden, the immigrants... these are traditional Christian concerns.  White middle-aged and female in Central PA
Kevin in SF you are stupid and ignorant. Why don't you invite Obama over for tea.
Wahooooooo Finally this guys true colors are showing.  Latest poll has Hillary up by 9 in indiana and cut his lead in north Carolina to 5!!!!!  Bye Bye Obama

---------------------------------------------------

All evidence to the contrary....

North Carolina Democratic Primary Rasmussen - Obama 51, Clinton 37 = Obama +14.0
Indiana Democratic Primary PPP (D) - Clinton 50, Obama 42 = Clinton +8.0
Democratic Presidential Nomination Gallup Tracking - Obama 46, Clinton 47 = Clinton +1.0
North Carolina Democratic Primary SurveyUSA - Obama 49, Clinton 44 = Obama +5.0
Democratic Presidential Nomination Rasmussen Tracking - Obama 49, Clinton 41 = Obama +8.0
Indiana Democratic Primary Howey-Gauge - Clinton 45, Obama 47 = Obama +2.0

The one poll listed from RealClearPolitics today that shows Clinton with a substantial lead is surveying only Democrats.  The problem is that Indiana is an open primary...Republicans and Independents can vote in this primary so looking on at registered Democrats doesn't tell the whole story.

Oh, and also probably does not survey newly registered Democrats.
There is a direct scientific link between typing in all caps and having nothing of value to say.

Sometimes I'm just dumbfounded by the sheer stupidity of people. All you have to do is read these comments from Hillary's supporters to get firsthand evidence that they're uneducated and racist.  Who needs polls?  Just read the blogs.

A 55 y.o. white woman with a brain who uses it.
To cut the preacher off now is a political game.
He should of left this church years ago.  The radical rantings are not new - they have been going on for 20 years - and Obama knew it.  He did this now because he was forced to - to try and save his campaign.
Let Obama get on with the campaign, and let the new media take a vacation.
Why not talk about how corrupt the Clintons are.
I believe they will do anything to get into office, and I originally was for Hillary, but her lies are disturbing to me, I do believ Obama is telling the truth as much as any politician can, and lets face it the press can destroy anyone.
Wish all the bitter Obama supporters would stop hating on or blaming Hillary for everything.

Why don’t you direct your energy toward Senator Obama who has nobody but himself to blame for:

His inability to defeat Hillary Clinton in the big states

His stuttering, stammering debate performances (uh…uh…uh…um…uh..um..uh)

His Pastor Disaster (LYING repeatedly about his relationship with this nutcase)

His ever evolving relationship to Tony Rezko

Yes, we can –

No, you can’t……

I suppose all you people so quick to blame Obama for his pastor also blamed every Catholic who ever sat in the pew in a church where the priest sexually molested childreN????  Come on already.  I go to Mass every Sunday, but do I really know exactly how my priest stands on everything, especially his political views?  NO!  And even some of the things he does stand for (no birth control, no gay marriage, etc.) I don't agree with!!  Let's vote on the issues people and enough of this stupid nonsense.  Unless you would like to also have a discussion about Hagey and McCain, and Clinton and her cult-like Christian group she belongs to and its ties to Nazis?
To "sb", wherever you are:

Obviously Dr. Wright isn't the only crackpot around here!

4 posts...and not a coherent thought in any of them!

Oh, and please...

STOP YELLING AT US!!!!!!
Obama looking Presidential.

I guess I never really understood the religion thing.

In our neighborhood, we were all good catholics. All the boys and girls in the neighborhood thought the nuns and priests were mean. They used to scare the daylights out of us. Never a kind word to any of us. Going to confession was a nightmare at first, but we figured out the system. Just lie.

As the years went on and we became 12-13 years old, we all used to sit outside on the curbs in the summer, smoking cigarettes and pointing to each house and gossiping, trying to determine whose mother or father had strayed in their marriages, what nun smacked what child with a ruler.

You know, the usual stuff.

Such was life in a good catholic community. As children, we all managed to survive it quite well with a great deal of humor.

And since I have grown up, nothing in the religious community has changed on iota.

Shame on you media. What hypocrites in the way you reported this whole Rev. Wright story. You probably all go to church too.

Senator Obama is 100 times the person any of you are.
