The delegate fight: Wrapped up?

Posted: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 9:13 AM by Domenico Montanaro

More polling evidence that Clinton and Obama supporters are starting to hate the other candidate more than John McCain.

Politico reports, “Capitol Hill insiders say the battle for congressional superdelegates is over, and one Senate supporter of Barack Obama is hinting strongly that he has prevailed over Hillary Rodham Clinton. While more than 80 Democrats in the House and Senate have yet to state their preferences in the race for the Democratic nomination, sources said Tuesday that most of them have already made up their minds and have told the campaigns where they stand. Asked which way the committed-but-unannounced superdelegates are leaning, McCaskill -- who has endorsed Obama -- said: “James Brown would say, ‘I Feel Good.’”

But Clinton spokesman Phil Singer was singing a different tune ("You've gotta have faith?”) “Considering the rough patch Sen. Obama is going through, it’s understandable that Sen. McCaskill would want to change the subject, but her observations don’t jibe with what automatic delegates are actually saying,” he said. “Most are concerned about Sen. Obama’s electability and are impressed by the fact that Sen. Clinton is winning the states that Democrats must carry if we are to be successful in November.”

A Michigan compromise? “Michigan Democrats working to get the state's delegates seated at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday suggested splitting them 69-59 between presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. Clinton has argued that she should get 73 delegates based on the results of the Jan. 15 primary, which she won -- 18 more than Obama. Obama, who removed his name from the ballot, wants the 128 pledged delegates split evenly, 64-64.

“The compromise, suggested Tuesday in a letter to Michigan Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer [from Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger, Sen. Carl Levin and Democratic National Committee member Debbie Dingell, wife of Rep. John Dingell], fell halfway between the two proposals.”

Chuck Todd should start a COUNTDOWN to the magic number !
How may delegates that Obama needs to get the nomination.
Aww, come on!  'Hate' is such a strong word.  Geez.  I'm so tired of this divisive crap.  Why is this meme continuing to garner headlines?!

Obama needs to resign from the race, and accept the VP from Clinton.

Obama is so completely damaged,he needs to put the democrats infront of his own ego.

Can he?

Iowa congressman Bruce Bradley to endorse Obama

One more super!

It's not going to matter.  Even with the delegates from Michigan and Florida she can't catch up.  She blew any chance she had to win when she arrogantly believed she'd be handed the nomination, and didn't plan on doing any campaigning after Feb 5th.
That's outrageous.  So if you play by the rules, you get punished.  If the split happens that way, the one who broke the rules should be given the reduced number of delegates.

How does the DNC ever expect to be taken seriously if they let Clinton get away with this?
It has been reported that Clinton's Chief Strategist Geoff Garin called for a violent revolution in the US.

Why is this not on TV?
Alleycat and Tomcat love to brag about their catfighting.   Really classy.  There's more than one way to fight.  Obama is fighting for causes, not attacking other people.   Because he doesn't get down & dirty, he's a "wimp?

A man who is secure in his manhood, doesn't have to keep trying to convince others he is manly, as Hillary does.  A secure woman isn't afraid to wear dresses.  (Bet she sleeps in those butt-ugly pantsuits.)

A person of quality, doesn't fear others' equality.   Having a black man presume he is equal to the "chosen ones", is what is threatening, and infuriating, the Clintons.   Bill's popping blood vessels.

A true Christian doesn't have to carry a bible, or wear a cross.

A true patriot doesn't have to wrap himself in a flag, or wear a flag pin.

A truly intelligent person doesn't have to advertise his IQ.

We are judged by our deeds.    What we hold dear, shines from our hearts.

Obama is the real deal - a man of ethics, good judgment, and integrity.  He treats others with kindness, and respect, which is NOT a sign of weakness.  It's called STRENGTH of character.

Compare those attributes to those who wear masks, pretend to care, and make false promises.  They claw their way to the top, destroying anyone, who would deny them power.
What is there to "compromise" about in Michigan? The vote that was held was null and void. Split the delegates or don't seat them - seems pretty simple unless you are trying to scrape together enough votes to steal the nomination or something.
How about we report on McSame and Billary's pastors/ministers/spiritual advisors...as journalists, i feel it is your responsibility or else it's going to look highly suspicious all this piling on Obama...You think?
If not done fairly..as Rep. Pelosi said...the Superdelegates would step in and be there to see that it was...The DNC must be fair or be checkmated by this regulating action..
No one person's requirements is above the prevailing rules and regulations...
I don't want a "fighter" in the White House, I want a "leader".  The last debate told me all I need to know, he was gracious to her and her gaffes, while she went for the jugular.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, the gay population will still be 5-10% of the population, they will be living among us as tax paying productive members of society.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, abortion will still be available, for the poor it will be "back alley" and risky, for the rich it will be overseas.  The goal is to make it rare by sensibly teaching prevention along with morals.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, prayer will still be said in school, especially before tests and sporting events.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, the second amendment will still allow lawful gun ownership.

So this time, Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Well I guess Miss Hillary does want a 69-59 advantage. I don't think that would be fair. What is this showing our children? That you don't have to play be the rules and if things aren't going your way~~just "cheat".
"The Daily Show" brought up an interesting point Monday night: The last candidate who was talked up because of "electability" was Sen. John F. Kerry. Most newspapers and TV pundits claimed Democrats were "focused on electability" in selecting Kerry over, say Howard Dean or John Edwards.

Electing the president is never about how "electable" they are. Look, Jimmy Carter won the presidency, meaning ANYbody is electable. The question you've gotta ask yourself is, who has the organization to get out the vote, which is how you ACTUALLY win elections? The Clinton Machine has imploded when faced with its first real threat since Frank Wright in 1980 -- and the guy opposing them is a relative newcomer to the national scene. Factor that in, and ask yourself not who is more electable, but who has the organization to win? The answer, resoundingly, is Obama.
I agree that the two sides may have animosity for each other, but if one of the two sides wins fair and square there will be little reason to keep animosity unless one of the sides wins by overturning the vote of the people.

The vote mathmatically over, as FirstRead has accurately pointed out in the past (which makes their daily commentary on the "close race" somewhat questionable without stating this as a daily caveat.

Senator Obama,

DO NOT AGREE TO SEATING THE DELEGATES UNLESS THEY ARE SPLIT EVEN!!!!!

WHy does HRC get to DEMAND that the delegates are seated, in HER favor, even though SHE AGREED that Michigan and Florida WOULD NOT COUNT, and OBAMA"S NAME WAS NOT EVEN ON THE BALLOT????

I guess this means SCREW the RULES right HRC?

I guess you don't care that it makes you look REALLY desperate and pathetic to DEMAND that the delegates be seated in YOUR favor, even though thousands of voters didn't even get to vote, because EVERYONE KNEW THAT IT WOULD NOT COUNT.

Oh well.  Go ahead and take your 10 delegates.  Too bad it really doesn't help you because you are STILL BEHIND by 140-130 delegates, even after you take delegates that are not really yours.

And go ahead and count Florida also.  You still don't win.  You are STILL behind!!!  HAhahahahahahah!!!!

And I have to say, I am SURE that the super d's are REALLY impressed by you DEMANDING to break the rules to try and benefit yourself.

What a SORE PATHETIC LOSER

MORE DELEGATES.
MORE VOTES.
MORE STATES.
PLAYS BY THE RULES.

Obama 08
Hillary is too polarizing. She will not help on the down tickets politically. She has no money, to help with the down tickets. She is not the change candidate. Why on earth would they not want Obama.

YES WE CAN
Regarding your first sentence (about declining support for the other Dem.)...you guys are just figuring that out now??

Nice to know the campaigns are posturing still on the undeclared superDs...we'll know how they stand when they stand up to be counted, right.  But I say to Senator Claire, you go girl, you're a great and classy surrogate for Obama (as are many of his surrogates and supporters).

The Michigan compromise seems fairer than most; however what's to stop other states from stepping on the DNC next election, and its still changing the rules...that saddens me (and that's a non-partisan me and parent saying that).
I agree with a 64-64 split. That is the fair thing to do since Obama was not even on the ballot. Uncommitted votes to do count and do not matter towards Obama's final delegate total in the state. a 50/50 split it fair.

I am begging you to change your tabloid image and start reporting on important issues.  There is so much you could be talking about and aren't.

Clinton will win because white America would never elect a person of mixed race descent. It just can't happen in the country where 40 years ago, black people had to go to separate bathrooms and Martin Luther King, Jr. was assasinated. Whites are ready to say blacks can get elected, but when it comes to election time, they vote their race. I am sorry to say this because I had hoped America would elect him because his message of unity has been smothered by false allegations that he has some of the same views as his former pastor. Any idiot could tell that Obama does not share Wright's obnoxious views. I know one thing: McCain looks a lot more interesting than Clinton right now. You guys like to make Clinton look like no one can criticize her. Let's see what happens when she loses the progressive vote, the youth vote, and the African American vote. For me, there's no difference between her and McSame. They authorized the same war. He is just a less "racially" divisive figure. McCain has a much better character than Clinton.
Bill Clinton likes to say the following: "Whenever somebody tells you you can't win, it's because they're afraid you will."

It appears that both Clintons have trouble with math.

No, Hillary can not win a majority of elected delegates.

Can't she cheat her way to the nomination? Interesting that Bill should ask. If she did, there is no way she would win the general election.

Time to move on.
As usual, when it comes to the Clintons, one must examine every word carefully.  Thus, when Singer says that the committed-but-unannounced supers are with Obama aren't "saying" that they're committed to Obama, he's technically correct, but lying through his teeth.
1.) I hope the superdelegates are firmly in Obama's camp so Hillary can't steal the nomination away from the will of the voters the wa Bush did in 2000. 2.)Clinton "won" MI the way Musharraf and Ahmadinejad "won" thier elections, by running unopposed.  Hardly fair.  Split any delegates down the middle.
This is always how Hillary plays.  She makes promises and then fails to fulfill it.  SHE said Michigan would not count; but now that she's down, she wants it to count.  Enough already!  I've had enough of the Bush/Clinton/Bush years.  Isn't 20 years of this enough for you as well?
How can 50-50 not be the only fair way to allot the MI delegates. Obama's name was not on the ballot so why should the results of the primary be the basis of her argument for 73 delegates?  Oh, wait, she's desparate.
If Florida or Michigan end up being the states that decide this nomination I will completely lose faith in the Democratic party.

Break the rules and get rewarded for it??

They made their beds. It doesn't matter if Republicans made the ultimate decision, they should have stood up and said no.
I still cant see the logic in splitting michigan delegates any way other than 50/50 considering that, nobody had an active campaign there. Hillarys logic in this is crazy ,what if Obama said Hillary only recieved 53% of the vote running against nobody who recieved 47% of the vote. Therefore if Obama had run he would have split the vote almost 50/50 and the rest would have gone to other candidates. She forgets that there were more than two candidates at that time so for her to assume that she would have still recieved the same amount of votes if all other names had been on the ballot is crazy.
Sen. Obama is a man of deep thought, intelligence, integrity and solid judgment.  This man strikes a blow only after he has used solid judgment, intelligence and most importantly after deep thought.  These are attributes we should all want in our next president.

I believe that Sen. Obama has what it takes to give new meaning to UNITED in The United States of America.  This is the person I would trust to answer the red telephone anytime of the day.  I believe that his calmness, judgment and stately demeanor will serve him well when solving the vast problems we face.  His intelligence, personality and smile will bring about change the American people are hungering for.  Sen. Obama is the right person to become our next president.

Sen. Obama is telling the American people what they need to hear, while Sens. Clinton and McCain are pandering for political reasons.

I for one, a white woman of 59, have voted for Obama in North Carolina, as have my two grown educated daughters and my diehard republican Mom.  The tide is changing….hop on board North Carolinians for a change we can believe in….THE TRUTH

I believe the superdelegates know this as well.

Obama 08 and 12
Yeah..... that sounds FAIR. Why should Clinton get MORE DELEGATES than her opponent ? If the rules were followed,I could accept the results. But since the RULES were NOT followed, and her opponents name wasn't on the ballot,I find it hard to accept anything other than a 50-50 split.FAIR IS FAIR.Typical Clinton tactics at work here-Win at ANY and ALL COSTS !!!
Seems  like a "FIX"!  The people VOTED - and you cannot negotiate or adjust these votes - that is illegal!  Give Clinton ALL her votes - the people voted for her - you cannot change that!
Give Obama the "undecided" votes - that is what the people voted for - you cannot decide what you think is "best"!
This is not a compromise.  How can Michigan even suggest splitting the delegates 69 to Clinton and 59 to Obama?  Obama's name wasn't even on the ballot, so how could Michigan have held a fair vote??

Seems to me that since the primary was crooked to begin with (Clinton only candidate on the ballot) the delegates should be divided evenly, giving each candidate a total of 64 delegates.
Well of course Obama wants it split even.

He amazes me sometimes.

Hillary should get 73!
We know McCaskill(vp promise?) Will say or do anything. This Wright thing isnt over and people are still waiting for other shoe to fall. It seems a put up deal to me. Wright told Obama before he started  that Obama would have to distance himself from him. Obama said this was true. This was Wrights way of helping out his true friend and confidant.Political ploy. To convient and slopply done. Obama could have got more traction if he cared about this country and Wrights remarks about it  instead of personal issues.
I'm from Michigan and I feel that the only fair way to seat the delegates in MI is too split them evenly. Why punish Obama with less delegates when his name wasn't even on the ticket. Michigan & Florida broke the rules so both states should just split the delegates evenly and be happy that their votes are even seated.
We wouldn't need a compromise if the DNC, Senator Obama and Senator Clinton were as indignant about this situation before the Michigan and Florida votes were cast as they are now.
No way.  We Michiganders poll 50/50 for Obama/Clinton.  Clinton wanted 73 delegates, but she'll settle for 4 less?  What a joke.  Get real.  She didn't earn 'em.  These ridiculous offers come out because Clinton has the Michigan Democratic Party in the tank and has since the beginning.  What the Michigan Democratic Party seems not to realize is that the people of Michigan are mad as wet hens----at the Michigan Democratic Party!
Why don't the delgates just vote and get this over with? Why are they acting like cowards? The DNC is coming of looking stupid to their own rules. Michigan and Florida violated the rules, they should not even be a factor.People keep saying his name was not on the ballot, why should it be, when it's clear the rules were broken. The DNC can't change their own riles in the middle of the game.
I agree with Obama if seated fifty-fifty because his name was off the ballot. Now we can look at it another way and say that Obama may have been the winner if is name was on the ballot so that makes Obama correct 64-64. If Hillary can't live with that then stuff.

Obama 08
I certainly do not hate Obama supporters, as misguided as they may be. I just think Clinton is more electable and can carry the big states and swing states. Hillary did not invent Rev Wright...although he she could have, she would have a long time ago. I don't see Obama beating McCain, especially since the Rev Wright will now bring out the GOP evengelicals and other right wingers since they will use this against Obama till the end...and "divorced" as he may now be from the Rev..he had a 20 year "marriage" with him that is not that easy to distance himself from. Hillary has already gone throught the Right Wing machine and won ore than once....I'd rather not roll ther dice with Obama.
Unfortuately for MSM this is old news. Clinton could not make her case w/ the SD´s. Clinton is walking a fine line w/ the party. As powerful as they are, in America, no one is absolute. Obama is a powerful campaigner and there isn´t a politian (on either side) that wouldn´t want his draw and fund raising organization. That, is the blood a politician smells.
I agree with Obama if seated fifty-fifty because his name was off the ballot. Now we can look at it another way and say that Obama may have been the winner if is name was on the ballot so that makes Obama correct 64-64. If Hillary can't live with that then stuff.

Obama 08
Obama wants to split Michigan 50/50?  Why is he trying take votes he didn't get?  Obama, will never agree to any terms for Florida and Michigan because that might legitimize them as votes and then his official popular vote lead will vanish.  Obama, will do anything to get himself into the oval office. As with any politician, look at what he does, not what's coming out of his mouth.
This race is over. Congrats Obama for winning the nomination. Now on to the general election.
No one is actually worried about Sen. Obama's electability.  First of all, electability isn't even a word.  And secondly, there is no measurable, sustained difference in either candidate's strength as a nominee.  There definitely are different strengths and weaknesses each candidate would bring, but wavering "electability."  Personally, I think it will be a landslide.
It just doesn't matter anymore. Obama will be the nominee and Clinton will go away. And even if her supporters don't back Obama, one thing is for sure, HRC won't be mine or anyone else's president unless it's the local girl scout chapter where she lives. That's all she fit for anyway and even that's questionable. Next!
Cory SC is right.  The only fair solution is a 50:50 split.  This seats them and allows the race to be decided based on the other states WHERE BOTH CANDIDATES CAMPAIGNED FAIRLY AND EQUALLY.  THIS IS THE RIGHT SOLUTION.
I don't hate Hillary supporters, I hate Hillary.  She needs to go....away.
50/50 is the ONLY way to award the delegates.  Why should HRC dictate anything - oh, that's right - she is entitled to this right????  Hell no!
Quit trying to steal this election.
How is your campaign fianance fraud case coming along with Peter Paul?  Hope the results there are in his favor and you and Bill both spend a few months in jail.
If Hillary is given ANY delegate from MI or Florida, she'll then Demand the Popular vote be counted as well. The DNC knows this, & it won't allow any delegate from these 2 states to be counted until Barack is firmly the Nominee.
