The Obama-Wright divorce

Posted: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 9:14 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

The New York Times’ lead: "Obama broke forcefully on Tuesday with his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., in an effort to curtail a drama of race, values, patriotism and betrayal that has enveloped his presidential candidacy at a critical juncture." More: "At a minimum, the spectacle of Mr. Wright’s multiday media tour and Mr. Obama’s rolling response grabbed the attention of the most important constituency in politics now: the uncommitted superdelegates - party officials and elected Democrats - who hold the balance of power in the nominating battle."

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports on Sen. Barack Obama calling remarks by his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, "destructive".

“Eileen Macoll, a Democratic county chairman from Washington State who has not chosen a candidate, said she was stunned at the extent of national attention the episode has drawn, and she said she believed it would give superdelegates pause. ‘I’m a little surprised at how much traction it is getting, and I do believe it is beginning to reflect negatively on Senator Obama’s campaign,’ Ms. Macoll said. ‘I think he’s handling it very well, but I think it’s almost impossible to make people feel comfortable about this.’”

The Los Angeles Times writes, "Some black leaders said Tuesday that they were frustrated at Wright for undertaking a publicity tour in recent days that may have harmed the chance to elect the first black president. And a number of African American church leaders expressed alarm that Wright, whose views on social issues are far to the left of most black clergy, claimed on Monday to speak for all black churches. ‘I wish that Jeremiah, my friend, had kept his eye on the prize,’ said the Rev. Frank Madison Reid III, pastor of a large African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Baltimore who studied with Wright and has invited him regularly to preach at his church. ‘And the prize here for America, for all Americans, is that we can elect the first black man for the presidency.’”

The Washington Post: “At a meeting of black religious leaders at the Howard University School of Divinity on Tuesday, Wright declined to address the firestorm that his remarks had ignited. ‘You heard what I said [Monday] morning,’ he told a reporter. ‘I just wish that the media would focus on more of what they are saying in there, because they are trying to make this about me and Barack.’”

The New York Post: “After 20 years of loving Barack like he was a member of his own family, for Jeremiah to see Barack saying over and over that he didn't know about Jeremiah's views during those years, that he wasn't familiar with what Jeremiah had said, that he may have missed church on this day or that and didn't hear what Jeremiah said, this is seen by Jeremiah as nonsense and betrayal," said the source, who has deep roots in Wright's Chicago community and is familiar with his thinking on the matter. 'Jeremiah is trying to defend his congregation and the work of his ministry by saying what he is saying now," the source added. "Jeremiah doesn't care if he derails Obama's candidacy or not . . . He knows what he's doing. Obviously, he's not a dumb man. He knows he's not helping.'"

The Boston Globe: “The condemnation was a dramatic shift for Obama, who had tried to navigate a personal and political minefield: maintaining a relationship with the minister who brought him to Christianity, performed his wedding, and baptized his two daughters, while distancing himself from Wright's most incendiary sermons and trying to quell a controversy that threatened to undermine Obama's campaign's focus on racial unity.”

The Washington Post’s editorial page mostly praises Obama denouncing Wright yesterday. “Did Mr. Obama climb out of that hole yesterday? It seems to us that the whole sorry episode raises legitimate questions about his judgment… But Mr. Obama is right when he says that his entire career is antithetical to the divisiveness of the Rev. Wright's comments. We've found things to cheer and things to criticize about Mr. Obama during this long campaign, but we don't see how anyone could question his commitment to transcending old racial battles and finding common ground. The Rev. Wright doesn't speak for the candidate, and we hope the pastor doesn't become a continuing excuse for political ads built on racial fears.”

The New York Times’ editorial page: “It took more time than it should have, but on Tuesday Barack Obama firmly rejected the racism and paranoia of his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and he made it clear that the preacher does not represent him, his politics or his campaign.”

Maureen Dowd: "The Illinois senator doesn’t pay attention to the mythic nature of campaigns, but if he did, he would recognize the narrative of the classic hero myth: The young hero ventures out on an adventure to seek a golden fleece or an Oval Office; he has to kill monsters and face hurdles before he returns home, knocks off his father and assumes the throne. Tuesday was more than a Sister Souljah moment; it was a painful form of political patricide. ‘I did not vet my pastor before I decided to run for the presidency,’ Obama said. In a campaign that’s all about who’s vetted, maybe he should have."

The Globe’s Canellos writes that “voters and other political observers will inevitably wonder what took so long -- and how Obama could have misjudged someone to whom he was very close.”

But the Globe’s Lehigh writes, “So as we begin yet another round of discussion about the radical reverend, let me offer a radical proposition. What's really relevant here is not what Jeremiah Wright says but what Barack Obama believes.” More: “With the wrathful reverend now delightedly reinjecting himself into the headlines, that's precisely what Obama needed to do. ... And yet, no matter what conspiracy theories the reverend subscribes to and no matter what moral equivalencies he draws, it's Obama, not Wright, who is the presidential candidate.

Some editorials hit Wright harder than anyone else, like this one in the Cleveland Plain Dealer…

… and this one from the San Antonio Express-News

Meanwhile, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune believes Obama will face more Wright tests. After watching Wright on Monday, the paper doesn't seem to believe Wright will simply fade away.

Iowa congressman Bruce Bradley to endorse Obama!

http://www.whotv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8248411&nav=2HAB
Another (new) Iowa Superdelegate for Obama .. Drip Drip Drip ... How about it Chuck ... the countdown to the magic number ? How many more delegates does he need?
Thank you U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, D-Iowa.

Obama 08'
20 years. It took Obama 20 years to figure out Wright. You don't get that long when you're president. You have to figure leaders, both foreign and domestic, a lot fast then that. Obama's judegement is certainly poor.
I"m sorry, but I just see this as what Mr. Obama says he is not about, which is doing something for political gain.  6 weeks ago he said he could no more denounce the Rev. then he could his own grandmother.  But when his numbers drop, guess who gets thrown on the chopping block?  So much for the CHANGE politics.  He is no different than any other candidate in that sense.  Take any other Democratic politician and throw in inexperience, and you will have a clone of Barack Obama.  I'm so tired of this, Vote Hillary, at least we know what we are getting with her in office!
Well, welcome to the party Mr. Obama. It seems you are the last person to be able to figure out Rev. Wright. Can we expect you to be this much of a critical thinker if you ever make it to the oval office?
I think Wright has derailed Obama's candidacy for good. It must be so painful for Obama to be betrayed by a so-called man of God. Wright is truly the Judas Iscariot of 2008.

I think the DNC will have to find a way to take the nomination from Obama. He has too many negatives now--his race (for some voters), his inexperience, his gaffes and now a maniacal, hate-filled performance from a religious buffoon. There's no way Obama can win a general election with all those strikes against him.

I don't know if Hillary can win against the Republicans either--she has her own baggage, which the Republicans will surely rummage through in the general election.

I hope the DNC learns from this to vet its potential nominees better BEFORE the primaries start. In hindsight, it may have been better to select Edwards or Richardson as potential candidates rather than Obama and Hillary.
You know it is funny to me how people say..."Obama must believe what he believes because he was his pastor..." I wonder what would those same people think if I say..."You must be a racist because your mother/father/grandmother/grandfather was a racist.." After all, you grew up around them? Doesn't make much sense, huh?
I think its a sorry state of affairs when the media would rather focus on the words of a pastor who is not running for office rather than the words of the candidate. We have young men and women dying daily in wars, yet we are not focusing on that. We have increasing costs for fuel, food, insurance, service - but we're not focusing on that. We have a declining educational system and infrastructures, yet we're not focusing on that. We have a declining economy and rising foreclosures, yet we're not focusing on that. I think the only reason this particular story is gaining traction is because the media will not let it go -- constant replays and rehashes of Rev. Wright's statements, Senator Obama's statements do not address the really pressing needs and concerns of our country.
Now Obama has thrown his own black heritage under the bus. Did anyone see all those thousands of people at  both the naacp and at the national press club giving the good Jeremiah Wright standing ovation after standing ovation. Those people, Obama's people, agree with what Wright says. Now Obama is denying those people their life experiences?

Obama is nothing more then another political hack. His representives are running around today say "Lets just move on." Remember who said the same things 10 years ago? The ulitmate political animal, Bill Clinton. Obama is no different then the Clintons.
Obama did exactly what he had to do and did it in fine fashion. Now hopefully people will talk about real issues and quit trying to attack him on issues that do not matter to the people.

Well, well...

So what do you far-left idiots have to say for yourself now?  You know who you are... the same people who have been posting your ideological, poisonous comments on this Site for the past several days-- somehow trying to defend both Wright and Obama.  Well, what do you say now?  Who's side will you take?  You cannot defend and spin your hate any longer.  Please admit that you were wrong... or better yet, please shut up.  You are not as powerful (and smart) as you think you are!

The circus continues...
I don't want a "fighter" in the White House, I want a "leader".  The last debate told me all I need to know, he was gracious to her and her gaffes, while she went for the jugular.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, the gay population will still be 5-10% of the population, they will be living among us as tax paying productive members of society.

No matter how the "values" voters vote, abortion will still be available, for the poor it will be "back alley" and risky, for the rich it will be overseas.  The goal is to make it rare by sensibly teaching prevention along with morals.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, prayer will still be said in school, especially before tests and sporting events.

No matter how the "liberal" voters vote, the second amendment will still allow lawful gun ownership.

So this time, Vote with your head, vote for the economy, vote for jobs.

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
The liberal rags are out in full force today. Obama is getting his "Do-Over". Republicans are never granted such a privilage (see Trent Lott for details). Talk about being in the Obama's back pocket.
I think Obama did the right thing with this speech.  He made it completely clear that he denounces and rejects (?) what the 'good' Reverend has said.  Anyone who tries to paint Obama as some whacko demagogue like Wright is utterly mistaken.

Good to see Obama take a strong stand.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
This Obama guy is one very scary dude. Is there no one that he will not throw under the bus to reach his goal? Obama's not about "Change". He's about gaining power. There is no doubt who he would represent in the White House, only "His" people.
Wright has betrayed Obama, his African American people, and his American brothers, and sisters of all ethnic groups.
I do not care what Barack does, it will not be good enough, you will find something wrong. If only you reported about Hillary's pastor, Rev. Hagee, and everybody else as much as you report about Rev. Wright, we could call this media unbiased, but we know better don't we? We all know what would have happened if somebody had spent 45 minutes on the air talking about the Jews and what is going on over there as Andrea Mitchell spent 45 min. talking about Rev. Wright don't we? And I used to like Andrea Mitchell and I watched her. Now they will probably complain that he took too long to denounce Rev. Wright. Or let's see, his judgement isn't so good, who knows what you will come up with this time.
Wright is rich, like the Clintons, and McCain, and could care less about the distractions interfering with the people's need to make an informed choice as to the best heart, soul, and mind to be the next President of the United States.
There is a major disconnect between white and black America. The leaders of the black movement, such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and now Jeremiah Wright, need to keep their masses in line with lies, fear, and resentment to the rest of American society. They do this to control the masses they lead and to get the power over these people that they want. Why else have African-Americans not assimulated into America society while other minorities have been very successful in that regard? Obama is one that perpetuated the lies that these black leaders present to their people. He has listened to it for years without raising a finger to it. He agrees it with it. Obama is no different then Wright.
Wright didn't say anything this past weekend he hadn't already said-he didn't reveal anything that he wasn't on record as saying before except that he would "come after Obama" if he was elected in the fall. Why all of the sudden do we have such a pious denouncement from Senator Obama?
Our next President will select one or more Supreme Court Justices. Can we have someone making that decision that can't see a racist, bitter old black man for what is?

Senator Obama is either distancing himself for political expedency like any other "typical" politican would or else he is incredibly stupid. Liar, stupid or both he isn't ready or capable of leading this country.
Senator Obama has been honest with the American people from "day one". Sometimes the truth hurts, but I always prefer the unvarnished truth to carefully packaged lies.

Despite a continuous stream of biased and heavy handed "news" reports, Senator Obama has remained true to himself and his vision of a "more perfect union". He has not reinvented himself and altered his message from state to state. He has not relied on a stream of surrogates to attack his rivals. He has stood up and been accountable to the American people.

My faith in Senator Obama's ability to bring real change to American politics remains not only unshaken, but strengthened. Senator Obama has earned my respect and support.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Obama '08
Q.  Why did he wait so long, why did he listen for 20 years?

A.  Trinity Church is bigger than Wright, it is a leading Church in Chicago, it does great things for its community, and Wright was not spewing that stuff in church for 20 years.  His looped comments were unusual and so, apparently, are his rantings of late.  Church-goers have confirmed this, most recently MSNBC's Tamron Hall on the air.  He (Wright) wasn't always "this man".

Q.  Is he tough enough?  Where was his judgment?

A.  He is not Wright, he is a different person, many of us listen to opposing views (as we should) without taking those views on...I want a President who does not immediately bomb another country for what could be a small mistake.  I want a President who can show some restraint (judgment) only acting harshly when it is really required.  Teddy Roosevelt, walk softly and carry a big stick.  He walked softly, yesterday he wielded the big stick.

Those who still question him will never stop questioning him, he can never please them (you can't please all the people all the time)...I don't think he needs to try to please people on this issue anymore.  He needs to stay on his message (which a lot of us believe in) and he needs to help move this country forward.

Prouder more than ever that I'm an Obama supporter.
Obama fell into the trap. Now Wright will be the gift that keeps on giving. You think Wright is done talking? He's going to be out their every week explaining his points of view, and Wright will also be telling us about how Obama sat in the pew nodding his head to all that Wright preached. What a hypocrite Obama has become.
It was not forceful.  It was stumbling and tentative. It was a politician being forced to do something he clearly did not want to do or to deal with.  It was, at best, a disingenuous attempt to repair a leaky vessel.
Rev. Wright/Wrong...Drama King...but no fisherman..
Oh my gosh - more Wright news! Gimme more! Forget Iran, Pakistan, energy policy, health care... just gimme more Wright!

And along the way you can change your name to MS national enquirer NB midnight sun C.
Billy Beer .... Billy Beer .....Billy Beer .....Billy Beer ....so what!  Irreverend Wright.....so what!
Hillary, we got it all wrong, you are the one to lead the Democrats. We apologize for voting for the other guy, it appears to be a huge mistake on our part.
Hillary, we got it all wrong, you are the one to lead the Democrats. We apologize for voting for the other guy, it appears to be a huge mistake on our part.
Too little, too late.  I can no longer support Obama.  I have lost all respect for him.  His denouncement is 100% politically motivated.  It's just the same old, same old.  He has nothing new to offer.
American deaths in Iraq are at a 7 month high. Bush is positioning warships to attack Iran. Hillary Clinton is pledging to obliterate entire countries. AND FR is leading with a grumpy, old man's sideshow. Please post your journalism credentials, if you have any.
Now that Obama has denounced Wright, has the Clinton campaign called for a rejection yet?
Well, the other day, there was something on the 'net about how difficult it is for two men to divorce each other. I suppose the same thing applies to Hillary and Monica.
I think this is somehow just what Hillary had in the bag, waiting for just this moment. I know it sounds paranoid- but she seemed to be waiting for some secret weapon at the last moment.

Too bad. Gosh, I had some pastor's that said some dumb things ("Why do you think God answers your prayer with random scriptures plucked from the bible?" -because that was one of the things the taught in your church's Sunday School text for adults!) And a Pstor's job is to use his charisma to rally people to God- looks like he's forgotten about the God part and instead substituted himself, killing the chances for a genuine hero in the process.
Let's put this to bed and move on.
Just as the racial divide will not "just" fade away, neither will Rev. Wright.  However, as Senator Obama stated, the views of Rev. Wright are not, by association, the views of neither Senator Obama nor the African American race.  The African American race is much larger than the Rev. Wright himself.  No one man can speak for the masses.  Now, enough of this shame, let's move on to the important issues that are facing the American people.
Now what about all his other corrupt buddies? Will he do the same about them?He is as sleazy as you obamanoids claim the clintons are.
Wright's behavior has been so strange that I have suspected he is beginning the stages od dmentia. However, after seeing him at the press conference with Barbara Reynolds, and after hearing talk that he is a Hillary suppporter, I now think we atre witnessing Clintonian machinations. I now believe Clinton andf her supporters are egging him on and responsible for the weird commenbts he has been making. There is no common sense lin anything he has been saying. He could be a Hillary supporter but he has gone way beyond a normal supporter and taken on the negativity of the Clintons in their political candidacy. I suspect he has mucho help from the Clintons in phrasing his attacks.
"Wright says he hung back at first because his mother always advised him that it's better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it. She was right."

...let's get back to the issues, MSNBC???
It's the economy stupid!
It is now obvious that Rev Wright's ego is way bigger than his professed desire to uplift the weak and the poor. Otherwise he would not try to hurt the chances of someone who's trying to help achieve a similar goal.
I hope people keep their eyes on the ball which is the Iraq war/weak economy/weak dollar = high gas prices and inflation, healthcare, functional government free of corporate stranglehold.
Or else, we will get it very wrong, again, like we did in 2000 and 2004
This message of why it took so long?  Listen, Obama (I felt as a voter/supporter)- felt that the important issues are the economic crisis and the war-The media placed Wright above important issues not Obama-He needed once again to address this and put an end to it on his side. We have been wasting so much time on Wright?  Why?  I have never associated Obama with Wright's beliefs and never will-I tell you what-The mud being slung at Obama is amazing and childish-Obama himself has certainly shown grace and integrity unlike screaming throwing tantrum Hillary-
Why are we not talking about Hillary's illegal campaign money in 2000 in which hearings will take place-Why are we not talking about the conflict of Hillary's "I am middle class and for women", when in reality has forced Bill's women to be quiet in regards to sexual assaults-for the sake of her(Hillary's) ambitions.  How could she disregard these women that Bill had been with-They were violated-these women's lives will never be the same ever again!  Oh ya-exactly where is Hillary from?  Everytime she is in a state-she talks about her grassroots-being raised in PA, Arkansas-does anybody pick this up.  The woman can't tell the truth at all!
If Obama doesn't get the primary-I am not voting at all-I have no faith or trust in Hillary or McCain.  If we think we have it bad now, just wait-Bush will look like Mother Theresa-I know no one will make a comment on my two cents worth because their is bias going on in the media-
Sen. Obama is a man of deep thought, intelligence, integrity and solid judgment.  This man strikes a blow only after he has used solid judgment, intelligence and most importantly after deep thought.  These are attributes we should all want in our next president.

I believe that Sen. Obama has what it takes to give new meaning to UNITED in The United States of America.  This is the person I would trust to answer the red telephone anytime of the day.  I believe that his calmness, judgment and stately demeanor will serve him well when solving the vast problems we face.  His intelligence, personality and smile will bring about change the American people are hungering for.  Sen. Obama is the right person to become our next president.

Sen. Obama is telling the American people what they need to hear, while Sens. Clinton and McCain are pandering for political reasons.

I for one, a white woman of 59, have voted for Obama in North Carolina, as have my two grown educated daughters and my diehard republican Mom.  The tide is changing….hop on board North Carolinians for a change we can believe in….THE TRUTH

Obama 08 and 12
Many seem to forget Obama was concerned with helping Americans, not some crazy pastor.

It was the media who seemed to think a pastor mattered more than Bill Clinton's presidential decision to close Magnequench an Valparaiso, Indiana company making sensitive military equipment and ship the jobs to China.

The Clinton tax returns show the couple has made millions of dollars from foreign governments and companies.  Colombia, Dubai, China, and many more.

The Clinton's will not release the Clinton library contributions.

In 1996, while at Camp David, Hillary Clinton told Bill Clinton to "screw them" southern Democrats.  3 eye witnesses have confirmed this.

Hillary Clinton is involved in a fraud trial going on in California right now, but the media doesn't report on this.

Unfortunately, the media has been afraid to dig into Hillary since super Tuesday.
Thous shalt not call Barack Obama a 'politician'. The difference between the remarks Revered Wright made over the weekend and the remarks in the video we have all watched...is that he made the fatal mistake of calling Senator Obama a "politician". The man that Barack Obama said that he could not disown any more than he could disown the black community...is now under the bus. While Senator Obama deals with Wright, bitter and Ayers...problems of his own making...Senator Clinton focuses on the economy, jobs, health care, education, energy. etc. Luckily the voters in Indiana and North Carolina and the remaining primary states will get to decide what is important to them.
They may be divorced but are forever connected.
Another example of Obama dealing out truths.Little by little he gives just what he feels he needs to to keep everyone in line. The black community will now dump wright like a hot potatoe because they are so bent on a Black country. They will do anything they have to  now to get Obama in. That is why if he gets Nomination he wont get nov.We will have 4 more yrs of Repubs. Obama has been pressuring all Blacks to stay in line and has worked some. I think more and more are seeing this isnt going to work.Strength comes in numbers and that goes both ways. Look at Pa.Obama can show he gets money but he cannt close a deal.Unless the state has scads of blacks he is at a loss. The November vote is no caucus that is his other win.He can spend 3 to 5  to 1 and cannt bring it in. Obama needs more time to learn(not politics he does that )and to build his base. He has opened the door more though and thats a good thing.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
I wonder when the next skeleton will come tumbling out of the closet.
"I could no more disown him than I could my White Grandmother"  - NOW that Wright has insulted Obama with his "he's just a politician" comment - Now Obama is outraged by these comments - SAME comments Wright has been ranting for 20 years!
Stop the Drama - NO OBAMA!
