Clinton's morning 'commute'

Posted: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 12:07 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Ron Allen
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sen. Clinton just went along on the morning commute with Jason Allen Wilfing of South Bend, who works at a sheet metal plant. They stopped for gas in his white pickup truck at a Marathon station where the price for regular is $3.75 a gallon. Clinton and Wilfing are now "commuting," to his job, in a motorcade, a motorcade that incidentally included eight low-gas mileage SUVs.

It was all quite contrived, like many campaign events, with Secret Service in the back seat of the truck and a swarm of media at the station. However, this one seemed a bit more "unnatural," shall we say, than most. And Sen. Clinton admitted because of her "special circumstance," she hasn't bought gas in a long while. But it’s an example of how determined Clinton is to win over working-class voters by showing her concern and understanding of "kitchen table" issues.

While the gas dial was rolling up to $63.67, Clinton and Wilfing "chatted" about the high price of groceries and how rising fuel costs are affecting many aspects of family life.

Clinton also made a pitch, when asked about it by reporters, for her "gas tax holiday," which would suspend fuel taxes for the summer months. While Sen. Barack Obama and others have called the proposal a "gimmick" that only would save most families about $28 over the summer, Clinton says small businesses, trucking firms, farmers and families driving off for vacations would save much more. Clinton seems determined to make this a defining issue over the remaining days of the campaign.

Clinton also talked about how there's a need to "sound the alarm" about how high prices are hurting families. She talked about how it’s a question of the nation's priorities while pointing out that the government bailed out Wall Street investment bank Bear Sterns, but she says, has done little for working-class families.

And there was more. Clinton talked about the need to investigate the energy markets, an unregulated business she says should be investigated for "market manipulation." She also called for more pressure on the OPEC "cartel," which she said operates a monopoly that should in some ways be more accountable under U.S. anti-trust laws. Much of that has become part of her stump speech here in Indiana, where her main theme continues to be "jobs, jobs and jobs."

We're now at Delux sheet metal, where Clinton is chatting with workers assembled on the factory floor here for her remarks.

"We've got to gather the political will to take on the oil companies," she said.

Quite a morning commute for one of the company's workers. And, in case you're wondering, the Clinton campaign did pay for her commuter buddy's gas. She just said someone told her the prices in some places went up 20 cents a gallon overnight.

"I'm asking people who work hard for a living ... to support me," she just said, adding that the country needs a "fighter" and a "change maker" in the White House.

Good, Hilary.  Though a planned event, it is MUCH MORE MEANINGFUL than going to play basketball with a bunch of prima donna athletes who could give a rat's A*s.
Clinton = Economy

Don't be stupid. Vote for jobs and health care. Vote for Clinton.
Chuck Todd - Here is a very interesting poll out of New Jersey.

http://www.monmouth.edu/polling/admin/polls/MUP16_1.pdf

In a general election matchup, Clinton wins NJ by 14%, but Obama wins by 24%!

This is striking because Clinton won NJ by 10%.  It shoots Clinton's two main arguments in the foot, that Obama will struggle in this traditional democratic stronghold as well as that primary results are somehow indicative of how a state will vote in the fall.
But does anyone actually believe Obama pumps his own gas either? I sure as heck don't.

As far as Bill and Hillary's success since leavign the White House, Obama has already made $4M last year on his book. He's well on his way to reaching or surpassing what the Clinton's have made since leaving the White House. Of course he'll be able to command 6 figure fees for speaking engagements.
Show Biz all the way.. Do Anything Say Anything politics.
Obama should counter with his credit card being rejected as he tried to rent a car to speak at the Democratic National Convention...now that's a story we can all relate to!

She is unreal and that is exactly what I said below, she hasn't actually had to pay for gas in quite awhile.  The American people should recall that as she tries to tell them that she's just like the rest of us.

Hogwash.
Somehow, Dukakis in the tank comes to mind.
Good Move.  Probably better than Obama playing basketball in a USMC tee-shirt.  Bet Wright gave him the tee-shirt.

I hope and pray that voters that still have a vote will vote for Hillary.  There is just too much unknown about Obama.  We just do not know him.
If the phoney gas tax holiday is HRC's answer to high gas prices then she is less intelligent than I thought.  I guess her campaign does not have enough money for a financial advisor.

Bob, Chicago
As of this morning:
Oil prices, $115/barrel, two soldiers died in Iraq Tuesday, Home foreclosures are at an all time high; Oil companies posted record profits (again); Regular gas in this city $3.79/gal. Health care is in crisis, jobs are being shipped out daily.
The Republican/McCain/Clinton response? Smear ads featuring Barack Obama and his former pastor.
A gas tax "holiday" which may save $20 this summer season; but may bankrupt the funds responsible for our infrastructure. A health care plan which is essentially the Bush plan. (McCain). In other words, no plan. Support of policies that have lead to the economic crisis and job losses we currently are in with China, Mexico, Colombia, and India (Clinton's NAFTA, CAFTA, China trade deals "Most Favored Nation Status"; McCain's endorsement of this plan.)
McCain's 100 year war and the not so veiled insistence that we attack Iran. Clinton's pledge to the oil sheiks of Dubai, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates that she would "obliterate Iran" with nuclear force if they were attacked.
Economy: McCain's campaign was nearly bankrupt until he "lent" himself $4 million dollars violating campaign finance laws. Clinton's "formidable" campaign, based on experience, has truly been bankrupt of money or ideas. Bills to small business owners in Ohio and Texas not being paid. Her employees' OWN health care not being paid.

Given the above issues that are facing this country, paired with the Clinton/McCain responses, or lack thereof, are THE reason the debate for the presidency keeps being focused on smear tactics and innuendo.
Neither Clinton nor McCain truly give a rat's arse about the American citizens who are truly suffering; the "blue collar" worker, the soldiers, the veterans, or anyone else.  If they or their supporters truly cared, the issues would be paramount in their campaigns.
Posters on this site who routinely try to smear Obama with non issues; I've got a question for you. At the end of the day, when you've scored your various "gotcha" points of "Rezko, Wright, Ayers, Muslim, Hamas, terrorist, boogeyman", do you honestly feel better about yourself and your campaign? Are any of the above smear points going to lower the price of gas? Bring our troops home? Save your house or job? Provide health care for your family?
Or are you going to continue to support candidates like Bush/McCain/Clinton, who will tell you what you want to hear, all the while enriching themselves while selling out the country. You supporters who are so virulent, and would never support Obama under any circumstances, Is Clinton sharing her moneymaking secrets ($109 million) with you? What about McCain?
No, you will vote on hot button wedge issues like before, and get screwed again. They will be laughing all the way to the bank.

If for once, you can get by your biases, (racial, sexual, philosophical or other), and vote for your best interests, I'm confident that you will choose Obama.
Bottom line: do you want to do better the next four years than you have the last seven? The last 15? The last 20?
There is nothing to indicate that they would save "much more."  Families and small businesses might save more, that's true.  But let's call it what it is: feel good legislation.
"Special Circumstances", huh ?

Like the $ 110 Mio special circumstances ?

Hillary Clinton, the great pretender !
The Gas Tax Holiday is a gimmick right out of the GOP playbook. It would eliminate 300,000 jobs (FACT) and jeopardize an already failing infrastructure.  Just what this country needs. I have lost all respect for Hillary. It is obvious her appetite for power has destroyed her judgement. I don't need a pander-bear for President. I need a leader.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
Yeah, Hillary really gets it. $109 million just isn't what it used to be. After the guy's job is shipped to China and he 'retrains' to flip burgers she can garnish his wages for mandatory health insurance that his new employer won't pay!
"And Sen. Clinton admitted because of her 'special circumstance,' she hasn't bought gas in a long while."
*******************************************************

I wish I had the same 'special circumstance' as the Clintons.  She has bsolutely no credibility on economic issues like this - in my opinion.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Hillary's campaign run should be commuted.

The gas station owners probably won't pass the savings on to the consumer and having the windfall profit tax make up for the resulting deficit in the highway maintenance funds would result in the oil companies raising prices @ 6% according to the expert I just heard.  If the gas station owners do cut the price, the increase in demand for gas will--you got it-result in higher prices at the pump.  Obama isn't giving us a lollipop solution that sounds good but won't work like Clinton is.
Pathetic, even for her. Indiana, do you want to elect the next Panderer in Chief? Please end this debacle before Hillary somehow comes up with a way to show that she has deep connections with Montana ranchers and ends up on the back of a horse wearing chaps, cowboy hat, and swinging the old lasso, just like her father taught her to do behind that barn in Scranton.

A note on the gas tax: Even Uber Clinton supporter Paul Krugman has come out and condemned the gas tax holiday on his blog. The bottom line is that the holiday won't even lower prices for consumers. The prices will remain the same with the greater profits going to the oil companies, but that's okay because Clinton will then tax the windfalls her plan generates to pay for the money she would take away from infrastructure, which is already underfunded.

Krugman's take: http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/29/gas-tax-follies/
She is shameless!   Maybe she should offer a program for free foot massages to the working class. I'm a true blue Dem but sheesh...her open pandering is making me cringe.
I saw where somebody else on this subject made a very strong Idea.  Why dont we have a price freeze while we investigate price fixing bu the oil companies. As a matter of fact make them role back to the prices of say 8 years ago with a modest increase say of about   1 to 3 % for say a cost of living increase like most peoples salary.then see what the price of fuel woul be now and make the oil companies stick to it. Until they find a solution for the rising cost of fuel. By the way I have lost count can anyone tell me how many new Czars Hillary has proposed and how much they would each cost to fix these problems for her.Gas price Czar , Economic Czar I have counted more but cant remember the exact total.
The fact that she has had a "special circumstance" shows she has no real clue as to what average Americans are facing.  Her husband has earned how much money since he left office, and she knows about my problems?!
When I can think of a single thing she has done for me as my senator, see her driving to campaign stops in non-SUV vehicles, and actually saying something not a lie, I will consider voting for her.
Until then she remains a fake, elitist, lying, failed wife [why else would Bill be looking elsewhere?], who continues to ride her husbands coattails under the guise of some sort of personal success.
Just go away once and for all!
[And what exactly is her environmental reason for using all those gas guzzling SUV's in her campaign, by the way.  Oh yes, I'm special and really need them to be comfy.  Satan loves you baby.  Just keep on talking and saying things the way you do, and he'll be waiting for you to come on home.]
I think its notable that this issue...a $30 pander to voters, is the one she wants to make the defining issue over the twilight days of her campaign.  I truly gave her more credit than that.  She must think the American people are really stupid to make that be the defining issue.

Let me be perfectly clear.  I am down and out and I am against this gas tax vacation.  Let me $30 be used to repair roads and keep someone working.
This is why I hate politics...give me a break.  Not that I didn't think she was fake before, but don't keep insulting me day after day.  She has likely not purchased gas in 20 years.  She hasn't had to by milk off the shelf.  She hasn't had to worry about health care.  She shares nothing with me...it's all about her fake image and doing anything to gain political power.

Only the American people will solve the issue with the cost of gas.  No American president will solve the world's addiction to oil.  We need a revolution...we need a tea party.
This is to Chuck, Mark, Domenico.  This is not related specifically to the article above but I believe it it newsworthy.  Please follow the link
www.facingsouth.com The NC robocalls have seem to be conducted by a group called the "Womens Voices Womens Vote.  This non-for-profit organiation has a bit of a checkered history.  Also this group has contributed to Hillary's campaign.  Thank you
Only a foolish elitist politician who makes over 100 million dollars a year would suggest ruinning the lives of other to pander to voters.  That's right, don't act like you give a darn,--McCain, Clinton.  There are alot of workers out there who build roads and bridges.  Give the tax break--ruin the lives and jobs of thousands of workers this summer.

What crappy politicians you are!
I love this story. Sen Clinton is a tough canidate.
Yes poor working folk I am Hillary and just like you. Don't give a thought to Bill and I making $110,000,000. in the years since he was impeached. We feel your pain and fill our bank accounts.
My goodness gracious! "Well contrived", what in hell do you think the Obama press meeting yesterday was!First he liked the good Rev. Wright and now he don"t like the bad Rev. Wright and this after he has known him and admired him for 20 years, called him his menteor, his uncle, his advisor, but when the menteor said that he was just like any other politician and just looking for votes anyway he could get them, he throws the "good-bad" Wright under the same bus as his grandmother. MSNBC was a station that liked for long time, but when you all became "cheer leaders" for Obama, you lost me.
Talk abut pandering.

At least the suddenly blue collar $109M former first lady offered to spot the poor guy a tank full.
This is the most hysterical story I've heard in quite a while.

I would be quite worried that oil companies will increase rates even more to account for the 18 cents they are losing out of their windfall profits (based on Clinton's plan).  Hypothetical scenario: The tax is gone, but the price hasn't changed much and now the money (18 cents per gallon) is going to OPEC and not Washington.  Just another check on the Clinton campaign's money management resume.  Brilliant!  Maybe Hillary should have a Guinness instead and admit the plan is flawed.
Clinton hasn't changed a diaper in a long time either but do you think she doesn't really care about children....

Of course this is contrived....it's a campaign.  Or do you think that the NC Tarheals allow guys in their mid 40's to play a little round ball with them now and again.

Get real.  She is simply trying to make the point that people need help with getting to work and feeding their families and she thinks government has a role to play.

Hillary can talk the talk, but she will NEVER walk
the walk. The only way she could, would be if she
gave all her money away and lived on a budget like
almost all the rest of the American people.

Furthermore, kudos to Obama for not joining in on the
"gas band." By eliminating the gas tax, other state
and federal programs get the ax. Give the driver's
safe roads and bridges. A REAL solution would not
hurt or harm.

Obama '08

Gas in the tank - gas bag in the car.  She's pandering like McCain.  Senator Obama is the only honest candidate left in the race.
HILLARY CLINTON IS A LIAR.  Too bad MSNBC is still providing her with super-surrogate"cover". Her Co-President BILL is a well documented liar.  That the main media outlets give her pass on LYING to the electorate in Indiana about lost jobs is an outrage. If this were Obama, IT WOULD BE IN BOLD PRINT in "First Read", like he was a criminal - -
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/election2008/story/35337.html

The continual Racist posture of MSNBC will certainly come home to roost sooner or later.
This is why you have to see how the educated voters vote. They will see though these gimmicks. But of course the media only cares about the working class or rather the people with high school education or less. Think people and vote on the issues
Why hasn't Hillary or McCain done any of these measures before. They're both in the Senate but I haven't seen any proposal before this election. Anyhow if the gas holiday is instituted it will be Bush & The Congress doing it . Not McCain or Clinton. Wake up People
wow...I don't even know what to say.  Of all the things I've heard Senator Clinton touted as, environmentalist is not one of them (speaking of Bill's comments).  This just seems like a joke to me I know I can't take it seriously.  I'm glad it's not an ad that's going to be running here.  Also, I think the gas tax holiday is stupid.
Makes cents to me.
Jason Allen Wilfing sold his soul, for a tank of gas. Knowing that the gas tax holiday is unsound having suffered through the stupidity of it before, he figured he'd at least get a free tank of gas from the ordeal of having to spend the day with Hillary.
This is just another tactic by Washington to put duct-tape on the problem rather than fixing it. Hillary is just a female version of McCain, they both have quick ideas to cover and hide the problems with this nation and they do not worry about progression. At least Obama is concerned with finding the problem, fixing it, and never letting that problem happen again.
NOW who is an "elitist"? When was the last time Hillary pumped her own gas? First Lady of Arkansas? First Lady of the White House? Perhaps it was after baking cookies one day. This woman will do ANYTHING to get the vote of the blue collar voters, won't she? Unfortunately they believe her.
More lies and pandering.

Give it up girl. You lost.
What fools the Clintons think we are, and you at MSNBC must agree with them. This "hour in the life of the common man" stunt will have no effect on Mr. Wilfing or others like him in the long run. Hillary and Bill and McCain have been politicians all their lives and have done nothing with their opportunity to help the common man, only the big company executives whose biggest worry is how big of a golden parachute they can negotiate for themselves. Look at the donor lists for Hillary, Bill Clinton's Foundation, and McCain and see who is front and center on their lists. Now look at the donor list for Obama. Who do you think the "common man" is listening to? In the end, the common people will win out over the Clintons and McCains to take back control of this country.
VACATION? What vacation?  A "gas tax holiday" will not lower prices at the pump enough for my family to take our trip to Denver to see the grandkids; a trip we have had to cancel because of fuel/food costs.

W's little stimulus package?  It will pay car payments we haven't been able to keep up with because of heating our house and driving to work and feeding our kids.

Gas Tax Holiday?  Let's see.  What will I do with my $28.00?  Maybe treat my kids to pizza!  Of course, they will have to drink water with their treat.
