Hillary as Teddy Roosevelt?

Posted: Wednesday, April 30, 2008 2:54 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Hillary Clinton portrayed herself as a modern-day Teddy Roosevelt this morning, saying she’d build the political will to take on oil companies as president.

“At the turn of the last century, Teddy Roosevelt took on the oil companies,” she said at the Deluxe Sheet Metal factory this morning. “We need a president who will take on the oil companies again, and I will do that. I will take away their tax subsidies. They don’t need them to make these outrageous profits.”

All week, Clinton has been beating the drum on her plan for a gas tax holiday. Today she used some different language on the issue, not calling it a tax holiday but saying she wanted “the oil companies to pay the federal gas tax this summer.”

She also criticized McCain when asked about his statement that he’d use treasury funds to replace revenues the tax provides for the highway trust fund.

“I think that’s a typical Republican response: don’t pay for anything,” she said of McCain’s plan. “We haven’t paid for the war in Iraq; we haven’t paid for the tax cuts for the wealthy, so now we’re not going to pay to replenish the Highway Trust Fund. … He is just driving us deeper and deeper into deficit and debt.”

And she continued to knock Obama for, in her view, ignoring the short-term solution to the price crunch, adding that she hopes voters will consider this next Tuesday.

“I have no illusions about how difficult this would be, but you got to start somewhere,” she said. “Going after the oil companies, which we’re going to have to do in order take on our energy challenges and to get back into some balance in this country economically … means that we gotta start now to build the political momentum. I want this to be a voting issue. I hope people in Indiana and North Carolina on Tuesday will vote for me, because I’m willing to take on the oil companies.”

Clinton took a few questions from reporters after her remarks, but carefully dodged one about Obama’s comments yesterday distancing himself from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. (She addresses it on Bill O’Reilly tonight, calling Wright’s comments “offensive” and “outrageous.”)

“You know what? I wanted to call on somebody from Indiana,” she said, after hearing the start of the question. “I was looking for a hand from Indiana.”

Clinton started her morning with a carefully choreographed photo op, commuting to work with Jason Wilfing, an employee of the Deluxe factory, stopping for gas along the way. After the tank filled at the Marathon station, Clinton acknowledged that she hasn’t pumped gas herself in some time.

“I have a unique situation,” she said, noting her Secret Service protection. “But I sure have heard a lot from so many people about what it costs them to buy gas, and you know, what we were just talking about is how the price of petroleum, as it goes up, everything else goes up.”

Clinton picked up the tab for the $63 fill-up, got a French Vanilla cappuccino inside the mini mart, and then got back in the Ford F-250 pickup Wilfing borrowed from his boss for the drive to get work. Wilfing’s own pick-up did not meet Secret Service specs for the drive, which also included Clinton’s traveling aide and an armed agent.

Why no attention on the latest Clinton lie? In particular Clinton has been complaining about a deal with a Chinese company that made magnets for guided missiles and which laid off hundreds of Hoosiers was allowed to do so by the Bush Administration? The problem with this; Bill Clintons administration approved the sale.

She claimed this was a SECURITY BREACH, but it was her HUSBAND WHO ALLOWED THE SALE OF A SENSATIVE MILITARY COMPANY TO CHINA and laid off people in Valpo & Lafayette in the process. I wonder why the MSM in particular MSNBC, CNN, and of course the IndyStar Etc . . . haven't talked about this?

She lied and said it was the Bush Administration, how many lies actually equal a lie when it comes to a Clinton and the MSM?

BILL SOLD OUT TO CHINA SEE FOR YOURSELF and I may stop going to IndyStar because, for them to ignore this big of a lie they have to be picking sides.

and MSNBC won't post this
She's been a Democratic activist since 1972? She's been in Washington since 1993?  She's going to start building the political will in 2009?  Interesting time to start work, ma'am.
Didn't Teddy Roosevelt loose the party nomination of 1912 and split the party? Yeah, Hillary is kind of like ol' Teddy!
How can someone claim to be for the people when she hasn't even filled up a tank of gas in decades?
She wants to be like TR?  Wasn't he republican?
And how is she going to get the 60 votes in the Senate and then oilman Bush's signature, so she can keep her promise to stick it to the oil companies?

Her disdain for her supporters is shocking -- totally Rovian in its cynicism.  If her fans realized she's just using them to round up votes.
Care to report that every economist who is speaking out on this issue thinks both Clinton's and McCain's gas tax plan is a TERRIBLE idea?

Ok, I'll take the bait:
Sweet Jesus, what an ELITIST.
French Vanilla CAPpuccino.
The millionairess doesn't convince me for a second,
sorry.  What a load of hooey. Such hipocrisy.
Hillary, voted for the war in Iraq and the tax cuts for the wealthy.

Does that mean Hillary is a typical Republican?
Hillary is going to appear on Bill O'Reilly! Hillary is going to appear on Bill O'Reilly! You have got to be kidding!

Does this not prove to you folks who are Dem and who are supporting Hillary that she is becoming a Republican and will do anything to win this nomination even at the expense of the Dem party?  O'Reilly is one of the most blantant, rude and ill-informed people on the right who has bashes the Dems whenever he gets the chance. What is wrong with you people. Don't you see what Hillary is doing. If you are a good Dem you will see that she is trying to gain cross-over republican vote in NC and Indiana. She does not care about the Dems and their beliefs.

The next thing you know Hillary will appearing on a Rush Limbaugh radio show and asking G.W. Bush to endorse her. This is unbelievable. If you continue to support her there is little doubt that you have lost your minds.
I thought it was peculiar when Hillary quickly co-opted and then became the champion of McCain's gas tax holiday idea. But for her to be pushing it as a campaign pitch and not on capitol hill is disingenious at best and more than liking more pandering to struggling Americans.  Why hasn't she had these great ideas before now?  Why isn't she pitching and pushing them where they could actually be accomplished.  She sits in Indiana and tells voters of this idea, knowing she will not introduce legislation.  Pityful and I hope it doesn't work on folks.
Bah golly!!  Slummin' with us po' folks.  She's so condescending, it's nauseating.
Let's see. She is Jesus Christ, betrayed by Judas, then she is Rocky and now she is Teddy Roosevelt! Are we seeing the first candidate with multiple personalities? This must be a real challenge for her wardrobe to keep up!
Hillary Clinton portrayed herself as a modern-day Teddy Roosevelt this morning...

What a crock!! Back to dodging snipers and charging up San Juan Hill are we??
Teddy Roosevelt or Little Texas
McCain's economic solution - borrow and spend and pass the bill to the next generation...afterall, he'll probably be dead before our foreign creditors foreclose on our debt, so what does he care if runs this country into financial ruin...the final nail on the Bush coffin.
Hahahaha,  "San Juan Hill Hillary."  So tell me, how do you reconcile dodging sniper fire and being for NAFTA before you were against it?  And why don't all you bitter, blue collar, gun toting, bible thumping, misandrists, vote against your own ecconomic interests pansies see her for what she is?  A bald faced pandering liar???  Go figure.
Was she wearing spectacles? Did she don a teddy hat? Was she wearing a khaki, balloonhipped riding pant suit, (perish the thought), complete with leather boots, and rattling sabor on her side? Was she on a horse cracking her whip over it's ear?
Dear God!

She is a Chameleon!

Or is it Sybill?
Teddy Roosevelt just rolled over in his grave.

Teddy didn't take millions from lobbyists.

Teddy Roosevelt never made millions from Colombia, China, and Dubai companies.

Teddy didn't refuse to pay his campaign debt for 6 months.  At the end of March, Hillary still owed companies in Iowa and New Hampshire, schools in California, and healthcare payments for her workers.

Teddy Roosevelt fought in a war, Hillary dodged sniper fire from a little girl in Bosnia.
Ya Right.
French vanilla cappucino?!
I am just waiting for her to portray herself as... Jesus Christ, Mother Theresa, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Boone, Niel Armstrong, Bambi, and Mahatma Ghandi.  Anybody but the power crazed liar she is, Mrs. Bill Clinton.
She will take on the oil companies but she is still taking money from their lobbyists. This is what you call pandering. She is just saying whatever is needed to get the vote she doesn't care if the oil companies exist! Why else would they be supporting her campaign?
Ignore her...maybe she will go away!
We can HOPE!
How many average blue-collar Americans can afford to pay $63 for someone else's gas AND pick up a French Vanilla cappuccino?

In fact, how many average blue-collar Americans drink French Vanilla cappuccino? Last I checked, they are sick of, as a friend of mine put it, "cappuccinos and frappuccinos and Al Pacinos." You go into a coffee house, you order a coffee, plain and simple. Who's the elitist now, Hill?
Clinton is a phony-she has the oil company on the payroll-don't fall for that one.  In the meantime supers go for Obama-I am waiting on the landslide.  Watch her have a fit like a 4 yr old.
Obama 08
Wow read the last statement. The poor guy who had to suffer listening to Shrillary, didn't even get a free tank of gas for himself because his pick-up didn't meet Secret Service specs.I think it is so funny that her and the people around her keep coming up with people fact and fiction to compare her to.Why cant she be just rich old Hillary ? The truth of the matter is that a Venus Fly Trap called by any other name is still a Venus Fly Trap. I surely hope the people of Indiana and North Carolina can see that they are being sold a bill of goods. I also am so disgusted by the Newa Media to perpetuate the Judging of a man by the merits or demerits of his former or current pastor is unjust. You dont hear anyone checking on Hillarys relationship to the group The Fellowship.I also heard last night on a news broadcast something unreal. Hillary has been vetted but the News Media is not allowed to ask about Whitewater or Monica or the impeachment of Bill. There is a lot of vetting to be done of Hillary . you Hillary fans dont realize the free ride that the media is giving her will kill the Dems if she steals the nomination from Obama. The only way Barack loses is if we as Dems take this mess personal or racial, that is the only way.
Today the McClatchy website is reporting the following news about another Hillary 'misrepresentation. Will the tv media report on it tonight?

INDIANAPOLIS — Hillary Clinton loves to tell the story about how the Chinese government bought a good American company in Indiana, laid off all its workers and moved its critical defense technology work to China.

It’s a story with a dramatic, political ending. Republican President George W. Bush could have stopped it, but he didn’t.

If she were president, Clinton says, she’d fight to protect those jobs. It’s just the kind of talk that’s helping her win support from working-class Democrats worried about their jobs and paychecks, not to mention their country’s security.

What Clinton never includes in the oft-repeated tale is the role that prominent Democrats played in selling the company and its technology to the Chinese. She never mentions that big-time Democratic contributor George Soros helped put together the deal to sell the company or that the sale was approved by her husband's administration.

ECON 101 is what HRC & McCain need to take as they know nothing about taxes.

Take away the GASS TAXES you take away from the roads.

This CHICK=HRC knows nothing.

Go Obama '08
Teddy Roosevelt just rolled over in his grave.  The most corrupt politician in America just compared herself favorably to him.  Roosevelt said "speak softly and carry a big stick".  Hillary says "terrorist pardons for sale to the highest bidder".

Obama in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.  Cheer up Hillary.  Maybe President Obama will invite you to the White House for lunch.
Anything to get elected.

Big surprise there.
Hillary Clinton says, "...He is just driving us deeper and deeper into deficit and debt."
While she rides along in the passenger seat giving him directions!!! There's 132 years of experience for ya!! How many of you, working for your city or state transportation deptartments are willing to give up your jobs for this "holiday"? Raise your hand, please.
Hey NBC, whats all this I hear about Clinton's surrogates tampering with primary elections in 11 states?  Something sounds fishy to me.  You guys might want to look into this.

Give me a break!  Political postering from Clinton instead of getting real.

Clinton-McCain gas tax holiday slammed - Economists say benefits will go to oil companies, not consumers

NEW YORK - A gas tax holiday proposed by U.S. presidential hopefuls John McCain and Hillary Clinton is viewed as a bad idea by many economists and has drawn unexpected support for Clinton rival Barack Obama, who also is opposed.

“Score one for Obama,” wrote Greg Mankiw, a former chairman of President Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers. “In light of the side effects associated with driving ... gasoline taxes should be higher than they are, not lower.”

Republican McCain and Democrat Clinton, who is battling Obama for their party’s nomination, both want to suspend the 18.4-cents-per-gallon federal gas tax during the peak summer driving months to ease the pain of soaring gas prices. The tax is used to fund the Highway Trust Fund that builds and maintains roads and bridges.

Economists said that since refineries cannot increase their supply of gasoline in the space of a few summer months, lower prices will just boost demand and the benefits will flow to oil companies, not consumers.

“You are just going to push up the price of gas by almost the size of the tax cut,” said Eric Toder, a senior fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center in Washington.

Obama criticized the plan as pure politics and said the only way to lower the price of gas is to use less oil.

“It would last for three months and it would save you on average half a tank of gas, $25 to $30. That’s what Senator Clinton and Senator McCain are proposing to deal with the gas crisis,” he said on Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

“This isn’t an idea designed to get you through the summer, it’s an idea designed to get them through an election.”

This stance has prompted Clinton to accuse him of being out of touch with ordinary Americans as she campaigns ahead of key presidential nomination contests in North Carolina and Indiana on May 6.

Clinton at the pump
The New York senator was commuting to work in South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday and planned to pump gas at a gas station to draw attention to her plan to suspend the gas tax on consumers and businesses.

“We will pay for it by imposing a windfall profits tax on the big oil companies,” she said on Tuesday. “They sure can afford it. This is a big difference in this race. My opponent opposes giving consumers a break from the gas tax but I believe the American people are being squeezed pretty hard.”

The cost of a gallon of gasoline has touched $4 in some parts of the country as oil prices nudge toward a record $120 per barrel, hammering drivers at a time when higher food prices and falling home values are already crimping U.S. consumers.

Many economists implicitly agreed with Obama and said the McCain-Clinton gas tax plan sent the wrong signal on energy efficiency and was at odds with their pledges to combat climate change by encouraging lower U.S. carbon emissions.

“I think it is a very bad idea,” said Gilbert Metclaf, a economics professor at Tufts University currently working with the National Bureau of Economic Research.

“If we want people to invest in energy-saving cars, we need some assurance that the higher price paid for these cars is going to pay off through fuel savings,” he said. “It is a very short-sighted, counterproductive proposal.”

Economists also saw it is a poor way of getting money to the households that need it most and warned that it might end up in the cash tills of the oil companies.

“If you want to provide households tax relief, a direct rebate ... is more effective. Not all of the tax relief from a gas tax holiday will be passed on to consumers. Some will likely be kept by refiners,” Mankiw said in an e-mail response.

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman was similarly underwhelmed: “It’s Econ 101: the tax cut really goes to the oil companies,” he wrote on his blog on Tuesday.

And Senator Clinton, you would replace the funds how??
Oh, Pleas don't INSULT the name of Teddy Roosevelt by asshociatint the name of a
.....a SHAMELESS LIAR LIKE HILLARY
.....a MOST POLARIZING POLITICAL FIGURE
.....one who makes up one half of the MOST SHAMELESSLY LYING INFAMOUS COUPLE OF RECENT TIMES.
Basic economics, the gas tax holiday would be the wrong thing to do.  Give us real financial relief, not the appearance of relief to placate us or procure our vote.  We need honest leadership, not pandering.
sending comments into the void...

Yet more Clinton fantasies of being someone else, let's see there was Rocky, Paulette Revere, Annie Oakley (oh, wait, that was Obama's characterization of her), now Republican Teddy Roosevelt.

OK, who did I miss?  Oh that's right...HILLARY!!  Who is she, do we really know her?

This pandering is unbelievable...hey, I'm as hard hit by the high cost of gas as anyone (with me driving the kids all over and my husband with a horrendous commute) but believe you me, I'm smarter than that.  No reason I should vote for her just to save myself $30 only to pay more in the Winter and put someone out of work.  She's not worth that.

You have to ask yourself...why has she decided to make this her big looming issue?  This is what her campaign is about?  Even the working class she's pandering to have much bigger fish to fry.  How about housing, if you're using your car because you don't have a place to live, you're probably immobile in it and not using gas.  What about the war, the environment, jobs, the general economy.

Give me a break.

What a joke: Wilfing couldn't even drive his own truck and an elitist French vanilla cappuccino?  That is too snooty for me and I'm a college graduate!

Who is out of touch?

The gas tax suspension is irresponsible every way you look at it and she knows it.  I hope the American public does too.
hillary is just politicking. but time is also ticking. why use politics of lies, cheating the american people?

Vote obama
why bother allowing posts when you don't post them
He also tried to turn America into an imperialistic nation.
The last time I have witnessed such an egoist....I think his name was Jerimiah Wright, and he was speaking at the Press Club. I mean....give me a break...Rocky,Roosevelt...How about Rip VanWinkle!
No....I nave it....Pinocchio!!!!!! Get it...Bonian Snipers....Pinnochio!!!
She really needs help!
She's Rocky!

No, wait...

She's "Paulette" Revere!

No, wait...

She's Teddy Roosevelt!

No, wait...

If Senator Clinton formed a new political party today would it's symbol be the Chameleon?

How about campaign as yourself for a change?
HRC is pandering for votes. Bush did it back in 2000 when he was running and gas prices started to inch up. He said Bill should open the Oil Reserves. Yet when he got in office he did just the opposite and helped every major Oil company with his energy policies.
HRC and McCain are doing nothing but trying to get votes and push people buttons.
The unfortunate thing about this is the less informed will fall for these little tricks.
What a pathetic woman!!!
Who is she trying to cheat with this stunt??? Regular folks who are strugling? I am sorry for the voters who will be willing to be cheated with so cheap shot.
Shame on you Hillary.
March up Sanjuan Hill baby.  Go Hillary!
Is there anyone she doesn't intend to fight?
Fighting everyone makes it kind of tough to actually accomplish anything.
How ridiculous!  Silly Hillie is a joke.  Theodore Roosevelt was a great president with qualities that pandering dame wouldn't understand or wield if they were in her pants.  It's delusional remarks like these and lies (like NAFTA)that amount to taking the electorate for a bunch of stupid boobs that have made me dislike her so much.
