First thoughts: McCain's Bush problem

*** McCain’s Bush problem: Yes, Jeremiah Wright could be a huge liability for Obama if he becomes the nominee. Sure, questions about Clinton’s honesty and trustworthiness could also hurt her in a general election, as well as Bill Clinton’s return to the White House. But according to the latest NBC/WSJ poll, the biggest political albatross heading into November is -- drum roll, please -- George Bush. In the poll, 43% say McCain being too closely aligned to Bush and his policies is a major concern. That’s compared with 36% who say that about Clinton’s apparent flip-flops; 34% who say that about Obama’s bitter-guns-religion remark; 32% who say that about Wright and Bill Ayers; 31% who say that about Clinton’s honesty and trustworthiness; 27% who say that about Bill Clinton having too much influence on policy decisions; 17% who say that about Obama not being patriotic enough; and 16% who believe McCain might be too old. When you add that Bush problem to other macro-political trends -- just 27% approve of Bush’s job (his lowest mark ever in the survey), just 15% think the country is on the right track, 81% believe the country is in a recession -- that’s quite a head wind McCain and the Republicans are facing. So while the political world might beat the Wright issue to death or parse every little thing Bill says, let’s not forget overall dynamics of this presidential election.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd offers his first read on the turnaround in the latest NBC/WSJ poll.

*** Maverick or Bush ally? Of course, the above concern about Bush raises this question: Just how closely aligned is McCain to Bush? Well, the Arizona senator certainly has broken with Bush and the GOP on several issues: campaign finance reform (although Bush did sign that into law), judges (the Gang of 14), and torture. And those breaks certainly appear to help him among independents (see below). But some took place a while ago. What’s more, on the biggest issues out there -- Iraq, health care, economic policy (especially taxes) -- there is very little room between McCain and the president. McCain has spent the past several weeks since locking up the GOP nomination by solidifying his base, unveiling policy proposals, and raising money. But does he now begin breaking more with Bush? He started last week, when he disagreed with Bush’s handling of Katrina. What comes next?

*** It’s the values, stupid…: While the overall political environment is tough for the GOP, McCain is running neck-and-neck with his Democratic rivals. In the NBC/WSJ survey, Obama leads the Arizona senator by three points (46%-43%) and Clinton is ahead of him by one (45%-44%). What’s going on here? Besides McCain’s appeal among independents, NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart (D) offers this explanation: values. “What is driving his image … is values,” he says. “It is faith, honor, country, and patriotism.” Indeed, 54% of respondents say that they identify with McCain’s background and set of values, compared with 46% of who say that of Clinton and 45% who say that of Obama, (which is a drop from the 50% who said this of the Illinois senator in late March). So ironically, if McCain ends up winning in November, it won’t be because of national security or Iraq; it will be because of values.

*** A house divided: Another thing that seems to be helping McCain is the ongoing contentious Democratic primary. In the poll, only 25% of Clinton voters say they would vote for Obama in the general with enthusiasm, with 30% saying they would NOT vote Obama. Similarly, just 26% of Obama voters say they would vote for Clinton enthusiastically in the general, with 22% saying they would NOT vote for Clinton. Moreover, nearly four in 10 Obama voters say they don’t identify with Clinton’s background and values, while almost five in 10 Clinton voters say the same about Obama. “The longer this contest is going on … the more they are beginning to dislike their opponent,” explains NBC/WSJ co-pollster Neil Newhouse (R). “It is extremely difficult for Republicans… But it’s being balanced by the fault lines [within] the Democratic Party.” The good news for the Democrats is that Obama’s or Clinton’s numbers will go up if they can bring their rival’s voters back in the fold. But is that an “if” or a “when”?

*** Has Obama become Clinton? What’s also interesting in the poll is that Obama’s support among independents isn’t too far off from Clinton’s. In an Obama-McCain match-up, McCain leads Obama among indies by 11 points (46%-35%), while his lead over Clinton is 14 points (46%-32%). Obama leads Clinton by three points (46%-43%) in the NBC/WSJ poll. But six to seven weeks of Wright and “bitter” have taken a toll on his standing with independents. The electability argument Obama used so well with superdelegates over the last few months is not backed up by facts anymore. The only thing Obama has going for him is his Dem opponent, who has similar image problems. The poll was conducted of 1,006 registered voters from April 25-28 -- as the Wright controversy resurfaced but BEFORE Obama’s speech denouncing his former pastor -- and it has an overall 3.1% margin of error.

*** Super switcheroo: A former Clinton-appointed DNC chairman, and early endorser of Hillary Clinton, has switched to Obama. Indianapolis native Joe Andrew told the AP, "I am convinced that the primary process has devolved to the point that it's now bad for the Democratic Party.” He said he is switching, then, because "a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote to continue this process, and a vote to continue this process is a vote that assists (Republican) John McCain." Andrew and the Obama camp will make it official at a 10:00 am Indianapolis news conference. This brings Obama the closest he’s ever been to Clinton in the superdelegate total. SUPERDELEGATES: Clinton 267-Obama 248 (280 undeclared). Obama has an 11-5 superdelegate advantage since the Pennsylvania primary. And since Clinton’s victories in Ohio and Texas, Obama has picked up 35 supers to Clinton’s 14; PLEDGED: Obama 1,490-1,334; OVERALL: 1,738-1,601.

*** Just asking: But when is Clinton going to talk an Obama superdelegate into switching? Do they have a few in their pocket for May 7 if they somehow sweep Tuesday’s contests? For now, it seems it's Obama who continues to have more lure to superdelegates and continues to find the occasional Clinton switcher. The addition of Andrew to Obama's fold is a big deal because of his title and because of the fact Bill Clinton appointed him to the job in the '90s. But it's what Andrew said that could have resonance: "I am convinced that the primary process has devolved to the point that it's now bad for the Democratic Party.” Does Andrew become a Clinton superdelegate whip at this point?

*** Expectations setting: A new Mason-Dixon poll in North Carolina shows that the constant barrage of bad news for Obama over this last week has taken a toll. The new poll has Obama's once insurmountable lead in the Tar Heel state looking, well, surmountable. He leads by just seven points, 49%-42%. Whispers out of Indiana indicate Clinton's on the move in some private polls and might even have the lead in the Hoosier State. So if Clinton takes this momentum and closes like she has in the last few primaries, the Democrats could have some mess on their hands on May 7. The New York Times has a piece today that claims she needs a big win in Indiana, not just a narrow one. We'll see if that's a fair expectations bar, but one thing's for sure: It does seem as if the expectations game is playing in Obama's favor despite the bad climate for him right now.

*** On the trail: Clinton campaigns in Indiana, making stops in Indianapolis, Jeffersonville, and Terre Haute; McCain already appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe from Cleveland, OH, where he holds a town hall, and then -- in a blast from the past -- heads to Des Moines, IA; and Obama, like Clinton, is in Indiana, stumping in Columbia City, Middlebury, and Lakeport. And in the spouse watch, Michelle Obama is in Indiana and Bill Clinton is in West Virginia and Indiana.

End the madness Indiana, vote for Obama.
Yeeeees ! A Clinton superdelegate SWITCHES to Obama !
Good stuff !
Thats the first one of the day !
DRIP DRIP DRIP

How many more to the magic number Chuck !You should start a count-down for us.
Has Obama become Clinton? Interesting question. There's a lot behind it. If Obama's negatives rise through the roof, then a comparison with Clinton can be made, and he will share her unelectability.
*** Maverick or Bush ally?
------------------------------
Duh.  Take a look at record.

*** The good news for the Democrats is that Obama’s or Clinton’s numbers will go up if they can bring their rival’s voters back in the fold. But is that an “if” or a “when”?
-----------------------------------------------------
I would say that right now that is an "if".  This is why I think that everyone should rally around their candidate NOW.  End the primary.  Start hitting McCain on everything from the war(s) to the economy and getting the job done.  Enough of the infighting.

PAUL V CLINTON---WHERE IS IT????
Joe Andrew sess what everyone besides the Clinton's see: the race is over and prolonging it is hurting the party.

No matter which Dem you support, if you want what's best for the party in November, you know it's mathematically impossible for Hillary to win and she needs to quit, ASAP, so the party can come together to take back the WH and increase its majority in Congress.

At this point, Hillary's ego is hurting those chances and the party leaders need to make a loud statement to her that she needs to put the party before her own interests.
I GUESS CARVELL WILL BE CALLING HIM JUDAS NEXT!!!

YOU PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT...THE NEW GENERATION WANTS CHANGE!!! YOUR KIDS, MY KIDS THEY ARE THE FUTURE POLITICAL JUNKIES WHO WILL BE RUNNING THIS COUNTRY VERY, VERY SOON!!! SO GET OVER IT!!!
Ya think...?

Which has more bearing on this election? An irrelevant pastor who only is getting his 15 minutes of infamy because of tabloid journalism, versus the current sitting president. That's a tough one.

My follow-on question is whether the media is really surprised that voters care more about whether a candidate would continue or change current policies than some weird sort of pastoral McCarthyism.
We joke that Obama supporters are drinking kool aid, but one has to wonder what are they drinking at the DNC and what is Joe Andrew drinking? Are these radical liberals just losing their minds? Obama did not denounce his racist pastor until Wright stood up at the National Press Club and called Obama a LYING POLITICIAN! Well, that was just it for Obama! Never mind G-d D- -m America, or the government is giving blacks AIDS, but Wright called him a lying politician! We have to believe that Wright was not off his message on Monday. But Obama has changed his story - again! It's disgusting that a United States Senator sat in a church that supported and endorsed the views of Hamas, and with his silence and presence in the church gave legitimitacy to Hamas and Wright's preachings. But for the DNC and superdelegates to go to these lengths to support a candidate who obviously harbors racist anti-american views of our country, just shows how out of touch the radical left wing of the democratic party is with Americans. The DNC is doing a reenactment of the end of Thelma and Louise for the women, they must be really bitter with us....
So basically what we've all feared is going to come true. Clinton STILL won't win the nomination, but now Obama is much more damaged than he would have been if Hillary would have done the math and conceded. Like so many have said, she'll take the party down trying to get the nomination, she doesn't care.

Right now, her ONLY chance is to get superdelegates to support her - and they have to do so by at least a 2:1 margin!!! But that is not what's been happening, even since PA Obama continues to roll in more endorsements than she does. If she can't get superdelegates to switch to her after all the bad press Obama has been getting, then it ain't gonna happen. The math is clear, and anyone with the ability to add and subtract can see that it's over.

But hey, at least she'll get the pleasure of crippling us against McSame before the goes out like a sore loser. Thanks Hillary, your party appreciates that.
Why isn't MSNBC exposing Hillary Clinton intentionally lying about Magnequench?

ABC News reported the facts of this story.

Hillary was told it happened in 1995. Bill Clinton allowed the smart bomb technology company to be sold to China.  Hillary decided her only chance was to cover up the story and blame Bush.

This is a MAJOR news story!!!!
Clinton is trying to run for 2012.  She knows that if she can drag Obama down long enough, smack his knees hard enough with a baseball bat, that she can damage him among Democrats loyal to her.  It's disgusting, and it's exactly why this needs to stop.  The Clinton campaign seems to think politics is a big game, but it has VERY real and VERY dangerous consequences.  We cannot afford as a nation, both monetarily and status-wise, to continue the Bush doctrine through McCain any longer.
Obama becoming Clinton? are you kidding? He may get negatives because of the Wright issue but he doesn't lie. Hillary is just getting her objective, kill O so she can run in 2012 He didn't but should have kicked her butt over Bosnia, Iran, etc! What feminist woman can vote for Hillary? I don't know one (and that's me, girls!) Women have get a grip. The woman has huevos on viagra, not the calm persona we need in the oval office!!!
I am really not surprised. A divisive Clinton is what is helping to divide the Democratic Party. And a pro-Iraq war McCain is what will scare voters away, who will recognize that McCain is actually a carbon copy of Bush and that the two men have so much in common: immigration and the wars in Iraq and Afghistan.
On the Wright issue, this controversy is being blown out of proportion. In other words, it is given too much attention while other pastors supporting the other candidates make even worst remarks. This has the potential of painting America as still divided, corrupt, racist, and less compassionate in the eyes of foreigners.
Where's the Clinton push-polling in IA and NC reporting, MSNBC?
Obama will never be president, period.
How is the Gang of 14 compromise an example of McCain being a maverick? The compromise resulted in a bunch of extremist Bush judges being confirmed ffs.
Did you  guys include SD Rep Hill from IN last night to the tally

Thanks
I hae Never seen it printed anywhere that Mr. Ayers was not charged or convicted of anything, that Barack was 8 years old when the government said all of those things about Ayers (and we all know that the government does not lie) And that Mr. Ayers is a professor at a college! They just said that Hillary was on O'Reilly and said that she would not have stayed in that church, but she stayed with Bill and who commited more against the Almighty, Rev. Wright or Bill? She is first class, sleeze.

To all McCain supporters, Republicans, and Independents:
I'm sure you have been keeping up with the current Democratic primary. And I am equally sure you have read the fervent support from the backers of Hillary Clinton. They insist that the only way that McCain can win is if Obama is the nominee. In fact most are saying that they will vote for you if Obama wins the nomination.
Well McCain supporters, I have been "swayed" by their arguments about the upcoming election. In fact, here's your chance to "guarantee" your candidate the November election. Just vote for Obama in the upcoming Indiana and North Carolina primary (Indiana is an open primary). I "know" you don't want to face Hillary Clinton in the general election; and her supporters will support you in the fall.
So an obvious strategy would be to come out if force for Obama in the remaining two primaries. That way, you won't have to face the "formidable Clinton machine" in November; you can handle Obama, right? All the Hillary supporters' opinions on this blog says so.
If I were a McCain supporter, I would vote for Obama in every primary in order not to have my candidate to face Clinton. She would be scary in the general election. Kind of an "Operation Chaos" in reverse; but a strategy to insure McCain's election in the fall.
After all, Hillary and her supporters said so, so it "must" be true.
It is past time for the leadership of the Democratic party to take the Clinton campaign to task for their outrageous behavior.  Good for Joe Andrew for speaking up.  Are there any more super delegates out there with the same courage?

This needs to end,and soon.  I have supported the Clintons in the past, and thought they were badly treated during the impeachment.  But no more.

I have never thought that it would be good for the Presidency to be passed down in families.  It is time for the Clintons to do the right thing and end this.  Senator Clinton will not have a prayer of running again given her behavior.  She has shredded her reputation.
Hey Chuck Todd - are you going to cover the Magnaquench story at all today?  Seems it was Bill Clinton that sold them out to China!

A portion of the damage to the Democratic can be attributed to the media.  Every microscopic flaw, slip of the tongue, or scandal, becomes a hot issue.  Every pundit that can be found, is brought in to re-hash the dirt.  It goes non-stop, 24/7, for days, or until something juicier pops up.  It doesn't matter who, or what, suffers.
'...But has she really? No. Not really. Not unless you throw out the existing rules of the Democratic Party and invent a new set of Hillary Rules...'

Say ANYTHING !!
LIE !!
Make up your own 'facts'

It's the Clinton rules.....

Would you buy a used car from Hillary Clinton ?

From Politico.com:

'...First, Clinton does not lead Obama in the popular vote. It is a fantasy.

Second, the people she most needs to convince that this fantasy is true are the people least likely to believe it.

Let’s first deal with Clinton’s fantasy lead in the popular vote.

“I’m very proud that as of today, I have received more votes by the people who have voted than anyone else,” Clinton said the day after her victory in the April 22 Pennsylvania primary.

But has she really? No. Not really. Not unless you throw out the existing rules of the Democratic Party and invent a new set of Hillary Rules.

Under Hillary Rules, Clinton counts the popular vote in Michigan, where she was the only major candidate on the ballot. The Democratic Party does not recognize those votes.

Under Hillary Rules, Clinton also counts the popular vote in Florida, where candidates were forbidden to campaign. The Democratic Party does not recognize the results of the Florida primary, either.

Under Hillary Rules, Clinton throws out the “votes by the people who have voted” in the states of Iowa, Nevada, Maine and Washington, because those were caucus states, where popular vote tallies were not officially kept and where, by the way, Obama won three out of the four contests.

Under Hillary Rules, Clinton gets to choose the contests that help her, throw out the contests that do not and declare herself the winner.

Steve Kornacki of The New York Observer did an excellent, detailed story last week on Clinton and the popular vote, going through a number of different scenarios and projections for the contests that remain.

His conclusion: “The point is that under the most basic and probably the fairest criteria — simply counting every state and U.S. possession where there was a legitimate primary or a caucus where popular votes were tallied — Obama will finish the primary season hundreds of thousands of votes ahead of Clinton.”...'
SHE IS IN IT TO WIN IT AND WIN IT SHE WILL.hillaryclinton.com . ALL THE WAY TO THE CONVENTION FLOOR IF NECESSARY.
How can Mcwar, a Bush clone, get the dirt of Bush off him?  He CAN'T!!  He's too married to the man and his stupid ideas, and no one wants four more years of that crap.  And Mcshame just can't get away from that.
Mccain shows his lack of intelligence by keeping his bushlike policies. Does this man really think he can be elected?
Can someone tell me why this story isn't being reported?

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=4757257&page=1
Paul Miller, Woodbridge, VA- I would respectfully disagree...Barack Obama is not doing anything negative- he speaks the truth about issues...negative is when you take something that has nothing to do with an issue- just to try and slander one's name..that's exactly what Hillary has done and continue to do....Barack can not just stand by either and allow Hillary to hack at him - without any sort of response..because if he does that..then you, Hilllary and John's supporters and the media will call him weak, or a wimp.  He will and have to defend himself..but he will do it tastfullly and respectfully....DON"T BE Confused and do try to cause confusion...WE ALL KNOW BETTER
You what annoys me with the Chuck Todd's of the MSM? (I rarely get published anyway so this is just to vent. If I made inane comments about Obama being in bed with wright or something equally dumb I may get published more)Going into PA Hillary and her over 20 point lead spelled was impossible for Obama to crack into. They said Pre PA Primary (PPP) that if she wins by less than 10 it would be trouble for her... Low and behold her win was just under 10 now the pundits (not all but the louder ones) are proclaiming that "he can't close the  deal" like she he lies all day long.

They "cling" to Reverend Wright like it's the last hope they have of keeping this "un-entitled" candidate far away from any prospects of the white house. They were all fine with Obama the candidate when they thought no way in H-E-double hockey sticks he would be the nominee. But when it started to look Barack may actually have a real shot they quickly turned.

Hillary has told numerous lies and her using the windfall for a gas tax holiday amounts to nothing but pandering to they who don't feel the need to look past ads and soundbites for the MSM. Do they (the chuck todd's Joe "i was in congress" Sacarborough, Pat "no way a black person gets to sit at the desk in the oval office" Buchanan, David Gregory and most of CNN and all of Fox focus on her lies and pandering? NO!!! That would be too much like right. It makes more sense to focus on a loon who isn't running for office because they cannot beleive that Obama didn't know everything his pastor of 20 years thought. Now there are people who have been married for longer who don't really know their spouses (cough *Hillary* cough) and other members of that church who had no clue of those incendiary comments but no it's all about barack's minister.

If Barack wins NC by any margin less than 15 I'm sure the media knuckleheads will again be singing he can't close the deal. The fact that IN is similar to PA in demos seems to escape them as well in their talk about Barack should win that state.

I'm glad that people are leaving Hillary's lear of lies and showing support for not only change but a candidate who actually thinks before he acts or speaks. That gas tax holiday thing shows she will say whatever is necessary to get elected and the media is only too happy to help her.

I'm sick of 'em all!! Well not all...Keith Olberman, Rachel Maddow and even Chris Matthews at times are alright...
Paul v. Clinton where is it?

HRC ties to black revolutionaries while at Yale, where is it?

HRC criticizing Indiana plant closings approved by Bill when he was in office, where is it?

This probably won't post.  I've posted this many times but First Read will not show it.
Bush has done a terrific job in hos eight years. He had a lot of cleaning up to do after the Clinton administration. Lowering taxes is always a good idea, and he brought back status and dignity to the office. A great man.
Mark or Chuck,

McCain has not broken from Bush on torture. He recently voted against a bill that would have banned waterboarding.
I agree with the superdelegate who says "a vote for Clinton is a vote to continue a process that is tearing the Party apart."  Good for him for speaking truth to the Clinton Machine's power!!
FR -- Just ssking: But when is Clinton going to talk an Obama superdelegate into switching? --

Won't have to. We saw all of Obama's friends/delegates come out and support him over the Wright issue (NOT!). Support for Obama is soft. When he loses both Indiana and North Carolina next week, you'll see a shift back of delegates back to Clinton.

Drip, drip, drip.
I have been a faithful supporter and follower of Rush Limbaugh and Operation Chaos since its beginning.  The original purpose of Rush Limbaugh’s Operation Chaos was to create enough chaos in the Democratic nominating process to keep the process going as long as possible.  It is an effort to sufficiently damage the eventual democratic nominee, Barack Obama, and make him unelectable in fall.  Operation Chaos has worked brilliantly.  In Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania, Operation Chaos supporters were able to deliver the states to Senator Clinton thereby denying Senator Obama a decisive claim to the nomination.  But we are now at a crossroads.  Operation Chaos has been able to sufficiently damage Senator Obama and make him unelectable in the fall but in the process, Senator Clinton has been getting a free ride and is now seen as a stronger candidate than John McCain.  We must not let this happen.  It is time to end the Democratic nomination and make sure Senator Obama is the nominee.  This will ensure that John McCain will win in November.  Therefore I urge all Operation Chaos members to switch their support and vote for Barack Obama on Tuesday, May 6th.  Operation Chaos has succeeded in making Senator Obama unelectable.  We must now make sure Senator Clinton doesn’t get a chance to win in November.  On May 6th, vote for Senator Obama.
mccant is just a bush in sheeps clothes a vote for maccant is a vote for bush and war war war.
Hillary is a great closer. Barack is poor at it. He's just limbing along.
A month ago, Obama is so brave for not distancing himself from Wright

Now, Obama is so brave for distancing himself from Wright.
Andrew is switching for "whats best for the Democratic Party". He should have done what's best for the Nation, and stayed with Clinton. He doesn't sound like someone who is going to be crossing party lines to do what's best for the country.
Walt -  Thanks for the great post today!

Sorry, Clinton Supporters, but that's gotta hurt.  The defection of a superdelegate is bad enough.  To lose one who was appointed by Bill Clinton is worse.  But then he tops it off with his statement that a vote for Senator Clinton is a vote to "continue the process" signals to me that he thinks this should be over.

Ouch.
Joe Andrews is an idiot.  A good part of the anger of the Clinton suppporters and their growing disaffection from the Democratic Party stems from the sense that Democratic powers that be from Dean, Pelozi, Brazille have been blantantly biased for Obama.  Joe Andrews decision to be disloyal and desert the candidate he thinks is best will only fuel this perception.

Obama cannot win in Novemeber.

Don't be afraid to give your name unless your reasoning for opposing Obama is out of bigotry. Don't feel discouraged from pointing out facts, not just name calling or hatred.
Pat Yount of Scottsdale AZ,

What are YOU smokin'? Is that why Bush's popularity is at 30%.....because he's such a great man? Give us all a break and cast your vote for McCain today and turn back into Limbaugh's radio station. The rest of us will be voting for Obama for change from the past 8 glorious years under thw worst President this nation (and the world)has ever known! It will take Obama 4 years to regain the respect of the world after the pathetic Bush/Cheney years. Geesh!
Interesting comments.  Thanks for posting.

Obama has been beat up for weeks by the media while Clinton and McCain have gotten free passes, and he still leads McCain in some of these polls, and still has higher favorables than Clinton. That gives me confidence that once McCain gets the scrutiny Obama (and earlier Clinton) have gotten he should have no problem defeating McCain. If the press would do its job and cover real issues McCain would not have a prayer.
Looks like the economy is regaining it's speed. Just when is that recession supposed hit again?
