Delegate update: One for Clinton

Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 10:27 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
This morning we reported on the superdelegate switch of Joe Andrew for Obama. But First Read has confirmed that Clinton is expected to pick up one today as well -- John Olsen, president of the Connecticut AFL-CIO. The Hartford Courant first reported it this morning. Olsen will hold a 2 p.m. news conference at the state capitol to announce the endorsement, per a Connecticut AFL-CIO source.

Yesterday, Clinton got the backing of another state AFL-CIO president, Bill George of Pennsylvania.

To the count...
SUPERDELEGATES: Clinton 268-248
PLEDGED: Obama 1,490-1,334
OVERALL: 1,738-1,602

*** UPDATE *** First Read is aware of the three potential Illinois add-ons, who are for Obama (Daley, Currie, Stroger). We are not adding them into Obama's count as yet, since they will be officially named after the state convention on Monday.

I would like someone to explain to me why I should vote FOR Clinton and not against Obama.  I want to hear about her positives not his negatives.  It seems like everything on these boards is about Obama, his positives and his negatives.  I don't really hear too much about Clinton's positives.
@ SICK OF THE INSULTS

We're not all that way...it's just that those of us who aren't mean-spirited and angry don't often post here.  :-)
Domenico, why is the article titled DELEGATE UPDATE: ONE FOR CLINTON when Obama got the switched super?  Please, let's tell it like it is.
Maybe on Monday, they'll (the IL ones) be the three SDs to put Obama into the SD lead!!
I would love MSNBC to replace Joe with Rachel Maddow.  I watch the news in the morning when I'm getting ready for work.

I hate Joe, so I tend to watch CNN.  But they have no personality....I'd rather watch Jack Cafferty in the morning as well.  He's HIlARIOUS!

see this is richie's guy, hillary could have need richie's girl but she was too good for that. also if you really want to know who obama real mentor is, that would be Emil Jones illinos senator from the south side of chicago.
Dear Hillary's the Gal! Obviously you are a pretty old person, no one uses gal who is under 60. She might get the antique vote, but the youth, the progressive and the minority vote will sit home for Clinton in the fall....

And WHY don't you. FIrst Read, list the extra 3 Obama got today? Huh?

On Morning Joe, please either replace Mika or Joe, they are idiots. I'm used to him being an idiot, but I really don't like Mika anymore, she's become a stereotype sex kitten type. yuck. I would LOVE andrea or rachel though!! Does anyone think for one minute that Bill-O, Joe, Pat are going to be such cheerleaders for Clinton come August? They will trash her to no end. maybe even get a monica L interview about Bill's behavior while Hill-O was knitting upstairs! Come on, they want her so bad they are salivating!!!!
Responding to Sick of the Insults...

You know, I don't like the mean-spirited and angry posts, especially when they are directed to supporters and not candidates.  But they happen on both sides.

And I find it especially ironic when supporters of the Clintons decry like you did, since your candidate uses precisely those kind of tactics (mean-spirited and angry).

So I find it ironic that its OK when your candidate does it, but not when an Obama supporter does it to you.

I don't like it in either case, hence I support Obama.
RE: Sick of the insults, the rancor and the rhetoric @ 10:50

Perhaps it's because this is a medium utilized extensively by those who tend to have more education.  If you want to really hear insults, wear an Obama button into a working class redneck bar (as I have) and you'll get to hear pure vicious racism, not the veiled subtle kind sometimes seen here.

Also, I've seen just as much if not more "rancor" from the Clinton side, including from the Clintons themselves.  The Clintons have run a very dirty campaign, not just my opinion, but the NY Times' as well - and they endorsed her!  Besides, as someone recently said, "If you can't stand the heat..." well, I'm sure you know the rest.
When is Hillary going to start making up the ground among superdelegates that she needs? It's her only path to victory and so far, it's looking like a dead end road. She needs to make up Obama's 140 delegate lead and there are only 280 superdelegates left.

Assuming the remaining pledged delegates hash out about evenly, that means she needs 210 of the remaining 280.

210 of 280 to just pull even.
I've been hearing alot of raunchy jokes about 'Testicular Fortitude" lately.

Man-up Hillary.
Super D day for Barack, not so for Hillary.  What'd someone say about chickens and their roosting habits?
SICK OF THE INSULTS, THE RANCOR and THE RHETORIC- ARE YOU Serious?...Have you been listening to Hillary's ads and her comments....Have you read how Hillary's tactics are being used by the RNC....Gave me a break....We are angry because Hillary is destroying the Democratic party at all cost.  She claims to be a Democrat, but everythings she does helps the Republicans....We are not mean - sprirted...just compasionate about our party and we are realist ..we know Hillary is not the right person for the job and that Barack Obama is absolutely the right person....DON"T BE CONFUSED.

HEY GUYS WE PICKED UP 3 MORE FOR OBAMA!!! CHECK IT OUT!

http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/05/obama_picks_up_3_more_illinois.html
And according to Mark Halperin of Time and Lynn Sweet:

"Obama to pick up three prominent Illinois supers — Mayor Daley, House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie and Cook County Board President Todd Stroger — as the state finishes filling out its delegate slate.

_____________

Mayor Daley and Todd Stroger you say? Those two just got done putting the largest tax ever on the good people of Chicago and Cook Country. Sales tax is over 10% now, on top all the other taxes that are paid.

What Daley and Stroger did to Chicago is what Obama will do for the country.

Actually, I'm more disappointed in Dan Abrams than in Joe. 'Verdict' has become a one-man show, with Dan pushing his opinions on everyone. I looked forward to Verdict as much as Countdown. Come back, Dan. I miss you.
First Read:

Since you are "aware" of the three potential supers for Obama, are you ALSO aware there's a huge lawsuit called Paul vs Clinton????????? Where's the 24/7 coverage on THAT? Give us a break!
First the Clintons said the super delegates should act independently regardless of pledged delegates, now they say...............They have ever changing goal post!
How can anyone say that Obama supporters are the ones who are negative, when it was Clinton and her supporters mocking and laughing at him for actually believing in things like hope and compromise?  That was enough to turn any good-spirited Democrat to shame. Once that part of the campaign launched, I lost all respect for Clinton.
So much for understanding the working class. Clinton can't even get coffee from a coffee machine (she's the real elite).  Caught in tape: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/01/clinton-vs-the-coffee-mac_n_99609.html
HRC is not in the White House and she already has a foreign policy blunder.  She wanted to appear tough, but now she appears to have egg in her face.  That's what happens when you talk or act without considering all the consequences.  Bad judgement!
MSNBC, report what the others are reporting not just Wright.

In return, Iran is probably going to increase its support of terrorists in Iraq.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/01/clinton.iran/index.html
To the superdelegates:
"The National Republican Congressional Committee this week began using Obama's image to attack Democratic special election candidates in Mississippi and Louisiana, where polls show district residents view the Illinois Senator unfavorably by about a two-to-one margin. In response, one of those candidates, Travis Childers in Mississippi, has sought to distance himself from Obama."
ahhhhh, what i meant to say is that i love obama. hillary has testicular fortitude, but obama baracks my world.
pat huntington, ny (Sent Thursday, May 01, 2008 10:48 AM)

----------
Yeah, go back to kindergarten who ever posted this.
Look at the polls. Obama was up by 25 in NC last week and now down by 2 in some polls, and uip by 5 in others. He's down nationally against John McCain, and down big in the swing states.

Clinton is ahead by 8,9, and 5 in Indiana. It looks like were in for an upset on May 6th.

Go Hillary 08
For Pat Huntington.
I thought from your last post that you conceeded Hillary will not win nomination... Suddenly you changed your mind and apparantely believe she will get this nomination.
PAT, whatever you think, THERE WILL BE NO HILLARY/MCCAIN DEBATES and we will not learn who is the better debater. Watch out May 6: she will be out if not that date  couple weeks later. Don't cheat yourself, SHE WILL NOT BE NOMINEE, I can guarantee you that.
Just wait for the general election when Hillary kicks McCain's butt at the debates and then at the polls....Hillary can beat McCain...Obama can't...sorry Obamapods...No he can't!

pat huntington ny

Pat,

Have you seen McCain debate? Both Hillary and Obama would win a debate against McCain, but if winning a debate was as important as you apparently believe Bush never would have been re-elected.

Unfortunately Hillary can't beat McCain, not that she shouldn't, but because Hillary would motivate the base, and far too many independents that can't stand her. There is only one state that Hillary would pick up that Gore didn't, and that's Arkansas, However she would get crushed in Iowa, a state Gore won. Iowa has more electoral votes than Arkansas so even if all other states went the same as they did in 2000, Hillary would lose. Last weekend at the State conventions Obama continued to increase his delegate lead over Clinton. Despite all the Rev. Wright coverage, the "bitter" comments coverage, the PA victory for Hillary, Clinton was unable to cut into Obama's lead. Obama received 16 delegates (55%) to Clinton's 9, and 4 delegates are still remaining with Edwards.

Obama would win Iowa, and is likely to win many  states that W carried in 2000. When Joe Andrews leaves Clinton the writing is on the wall!
I STILL don't understand why Obama's supporters are so mean-spirited and angry.
??????????????????????????
Dom...did you subtract Andrews from clinton as well as adding him to obama?
Go to HillaryClinton.com and read for yourself the thoughtful policies that Senator Clinton espouses under "Issues". You will not get this from the media because they are only interested in the 'horse race'.
I agree Kyla. Cafferty/Maddow '08! The only time I watch CNN is when the Cafferty File is on and Rachel Maddow makes more sense than anyone on TV.
Bill and Hill are a disgrace to America
Obama picks up 3 more Illinois superdelegates: Daley, Currie and Stroger. http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/05/obama_picks_up_3_more_illinois.html

WASHINGTON--When the Democratic Party of Illinois meet next week to finish filling out the delegate slate, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will pick up three more superdelegates, according to Steve Brown, a spokesman for state party chair Michael Madigan, who is also the speaker of the Illinois House.

That's because the three appointments are all pledged to Obama: Mayor Daley --he shares strategist David Axelrod with Obama and brother Bill, the former Commerce Secetary is on the Obama team; Illinois House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie (D-Chicago), a Hyde Parker who lives near the Obamas'; and Cook County Board President Todd Stroger.
I would just like to comment on the statement of Clair McCaskell a senator for just 2 years who now believes she talks for the democratic party and all democrats, how ridiculous, but true.  She stated that she knows that all the superdelgates know who they are voting for and almost all of them are for Obama.  Poor Clair, it is obvious to me and most women that this lady has a serious crush on Obama.  New Hair do more make up and maybe even some botox, come on ladies we know that old trick, we go from frump trying to get the hunk.  My advise for the senator is simple, if he didn't sleep with Ophra he sure as heck isnt going to sleep with you.  Maybe she can settle for that occasional hug she sneeks in when they are on the bus together but remember Clair the only thing Obama really likes to use buses for is to throw most of his associates under it.

Good Luck Clair we are all routing for you.  What A Joke!

Joe Scarborough is childish to say the least. He truly believes Barack Obama's supporters are STUPID.
Well guys, return the favor. Don't watch him.

I'm down to just Countdown with Keith Olbermann w/guests such as Rachel Maddow, Eugene Robinson, Howard Fineman, Richard Wolffe, Jonathan Alter, John Dean and Jonathan Alter at this point myself.

Oh and Chuck Todd. He reminds of Sargent Friday - just the facts.

Mute button ON for everyone else, especially Matthews, Gregory, Buchanan, Andrea Mitchell and anyone connected to Bush or McCain.

I realize now why they talk about Rev. Wright so much - it's conversation, it's easy work and in return, they all get a big fat paycheck and don't have to do anything to earn it. What a life.
The daily percentage of superdelegate pickups is not favoring Clinton.  She is in huge trouble.
I think Obama is a decent, intelligent human being whose loyalty to a lunatic has been his undoing. Wright has destroyed Obama's chance for the nomination. Obama is now unelectable; I'm surprised SDs are still drifting toward him.

I have come to dislike Hillary during this campaign process. Despite her experience, she lacks integrity, she's an opportunist and a liar. I wish the DNC had vetted its candidates earlier--surely there were better pickings than these two.

(P.S. I want to join the chorus of those in this thread who love Rachel Maddow and would like to see much less of Joe Scarborough--the man is rude and condescending to the women on his show--he cuts them off mid-sentence and denigrates their opinions. I don't know how Mika tolerates him; because of Joe, I thought she was a dumb blond until I saw her anchor some morning shows; she can hold her own. And I was PROUD of Rachel Maddow for calling Joe on his dismissiveness of her views a couple of weeks back on Race for the White House. If this neverending campaign has taught us anything, I hope it is to include more than just white male anchors on news shows--Joe should be the first anchor to be replaced--I stopped watching him in the morning.)

Comment by Sick of the Insults, the Rancor and the Rhetoric

You do a stand up routine right?  You have to be a comedian! Either that, or you deliberately don't read a great many of the blogs put forth by Hillary supporters!  I believe there is a saying that all three candidates and their supporters should live by "if you can't say anything nice about someone then don't say anything at all!"  Also, the Bible says "Ye who are without sin cast the first stone!"

I'm sure none of us would qualify!!
Obama refers to his book which he admitted he made up parts of to make it more intresting.  He admits he lied for personal and political gain.

Still Obama is heralded as a second coming of christ by some.  I will never vote for Obama but I will vote.  As much as some dems try to serve us this kool-aid. You will lose because you insisted on foisting Obama upon us.
The headline is misleading.  Clinton hasn't picked up any ground.  Joe Andrew from Indiana switched to Obama.  I hope Obama will get on the air to let folks in Indiana know about this.

GO OBAMA!
The switch by Joe Andrew is significant.

Finally the "Party Leaders" are starting to understand that continuing this process greatly increases the chances of four more years of Bush (Ver 2.0)

The is too much at stake and to little time to justify the cost of Clinton's very slim chance.
Thanks, Shauna-

I have been trying to point out the same thing. How can Nbc/MSNBC still allow Pat Buchanan to come on shows? NBC/MSNBC why is Pat Buchanan still being allow on?

Please check out his ramblings for yourself....

http://buchanan.org/blog/?p=969
Obama nomination countdown in mybarackobama result center...134 delegates for the majority and 285 total delegates for the nomination. I think Tuesday May 6 is in the air, it feels superdelegate electric, and Obama is taking what has been earned.
Prominent Clinton loyalists going for Obama and union bosses going for the Clintons, need I say more.
Clinon is smarter. Clinton is more honest. (Yes I know..... and I know about Obama's lies too)

Clinton is right on health care.
Clinton has a plan to bring back manufacturing to America through personal fabrication technology.

She has an investment plan that will revitilize America.

In short Obama sells dreams and Clinton delivers solutions.

Kyla - I agree with you, they should replace Joe with Rachel Maddow.  She doesn't give a one sided opinion.  And she sees through the BS either side tries to throw.
Obama cannot win the GE. He thinks just like his pastor. His wife said it was painfull for Obama to have to denounce his pastor, but he had to for political reasons. A real lying politician.
Hillar is not winning the unions she is winning the bosses (elitest) of the unions.  Big difference!!!!
Um!  Obama hasn't done ANYTHING in Illinois.  At least I know she has a history of ACTION and not words.  Hillary 08!!!  Indiana and North Caroline will turn the tide!  Had the media vetted Obama earlier in the race instead of letting their hatred for the Clintons inspire a love affair for Obama then he wouldn't have gotten this far in the process.  Obama is just another phony politican.  He says one thing and does whatever to get elected.  He signed a statement saying he would accept public financing but went back on that.  He said he could not more disown Wright than he could his white Grandmother.  Bye bye Grandma!  Is that Wright's leg I see under the bus?  His only argument for running for President is that he showed good judgement on Iraq but his judgement didn't have consequences because he wasn't a Senator and has later voted in lock step with Hillary on every Iraq vote so I don't see that being a strong argument for the guy.  I've watched his speaches and listened to every debate and  I can only explain his appeal through hate not hope because the people supporting him are obviously such HATERS of Hillary.  Obama makes them feel good so he's the ultimate panderer.  He has no real PLANS but only promises which he never delivered upon to his supposed "home" state which he makes it seem like he's from but only lived here two years before becoming a professional politican.
The lead is slowly drip, drip, dripping!

I don't know not add the remaining add ons..
they already belong to Senator Obama.

It is now 268-251, less than 18 to put Senator Obama in the overall lead of total delegates, pledeged and SD...

Obama/Bloomberg 08
